    全 + 名词 — "seluruh, seluruhnya"

    English

全 in front of a noun scoops up "the whole, entire" thing in one sweep. It bonds to a small set of "whole-able" nouns — 身 (body), 家 (family), 国 (country), 世界 (world), 校 (school), 年 (year) — and calls for a 都 in the predicate. The one rule to burn in: 全 takes no 的.

    Structure: 全 + Noun + 都 + Predicate

our我们wǒ menwhole family全家quán jiāall都dōuhave been to去过qù guoBeijing北京Běi jīng。

Our whole family has been to Beijing.

    this这个zhè geplace地方dì fangall year全年quán nián都dōuvery很hěnhot热rè。

This place is hot all year round.

Remember: 全 = the whole thing in one sweep — and never 的 (全家 ✓, 全的家 ✗). It almost always sends a 都 downstream to echo the "all."

    Watch out

    • It attaches only to "whole" nouns (身, 家, 国, 校, 年…).
    • Advanced flip: 全都不去 = "none go at all"; 不全都去 = "not all go" — where 不 sits changes everything.
    Bahasa Indonesia

全 di depan kata benda menyapu seluruh "seluruh, keseluruhan" dalam satu goyangan. Ia terikat pada sekumpulan kecil kata benda "yang bisa dipenuh" — 身 (tubuh), 家 (keluarga), 国 (negara), 世界 (dunia), 校 (sekolah), 年 (tahun) — dan memerlukan 都 dalam predikat. Satu aturan yang harus diingat: 全 tidak mengambil 的.

    Struktur: 全 + Noun + 都 + Predicate

our我们wǒ menwhole family全家quán jiāall都dōuhave been to去过qù guoBeijing北京Běi jīng。

Seluruh keluarga kami telah ke Beijing.

    this这个zhè geplace地方dì fangall year全年quán nián都dōuvery很hěnhot热rè。

    Tempat ini panas sepanjang tahun.

Ingat: 全 = seluruhnya dalam satu golean — dan jangan pernah pakai 的 (全家 ✓, 全的家 ✗). Hampir selalu memunculkan 都 di belakang untuk menegaskan "semua."

    Hati-hati

    • Hanya melekat pada kata benda "keseluruhan" (身, 家, 国, 校, 年…).
    • Trik lanjutan: 全都不去 = "tidak ada yang pergi sama sekali"; 不全都去 = "tidak semua pergi" — posisi 不 mengubah makna sepenuhnya.
    1.2

    Adjektiva + 死了 — "sangat-sangat, sampai mati"

    English

死了 after an adjective cranks it to the limit — "… to death, extremely." It's the exact match of English "scared to death," "bored to death": vivid, casual, and slanted toward unpleasant feelings. The subject is optional.

Structure: (Subject +) Adjective + 死了

    I'm我wǒhungry饿èto death死了sǐ le!

    I'm starving!

    today今天jīn tiāntired累lèito death死了sǐ le!

    I'm exhausted today!

    this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fuugly丑chǒuto death死了sǐ le。

    This outfit is hideous.

Remember: 死了 = English "…to death" (累死了 = "dead tired"). It's the drama-queen cousin of 极了 — louder, more informal, mostly for misery (累, 饿, 热, 丑) — and it attaches bare, no 得.

    Watch out

    • Reach for it when the feeling is bad and you want to exaggerate; for neutral praise, 极了 or 得很 fit better.
    Bahasa Indonesia

死了 setelah adjektiva memperkuat intensitasnya menjadi batas maksimal — "sangat-sangat, sampai mati." Ini padanan pas dengan bahasa Inggris "scared to death," "bored to death": hidup, kasual, dan cenderung untuk perasaan tidak menyenangkan. Subjeknya opsional.

Struktur: (Subject +) Adjective + 死了

    I'm我wǒhungry饿èto death死了sǐ le!

    Aku kelaparan banget!

    today今天jīn tiāntired累lèito death死了sǐ le!

    Hari ini aku sangat lelah!

    this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fuugly丑chǒuto death死了sǐ le。

    Pakaian ini jelek banget.

Ingat: 死了 = bahasa Inggris "...to death" (累死了 = "sangat lelah"). Ini adalah versi dramatis dari 极了 — lebih keras, lebih tidak formal, sebagian besar untuk rasa sakit/menderita (累, 饿, 热, 丑) — dan melekat secara langsung, tanpa 得.

    Hati-hati

    • Gunakan ketika perasaannya buruk dan ingin melebih-lebihkan; untuk pujian netral, 极了 atau 得很 lebih cocok.

    2.1

差不多 — "kira-kira sama, kurang lebih"

    English

Read 差不多 literally and it explains itself: 差 (difference) + 不 (not) + 多 (much) = "not much difference." Hence "about the same, more or less, almost." It can stand alone as a predicate, link two things (A 跟 B 差不多), or work as an adverb before a quantity.

    Structure: Subject + 差不多 · A + 跟 / 和 + B + 差不多

these这zhètwo两个liǎng gewords词cí的demeanings意思yì siabout the same差不多chà bu duō。

These two words mean about the same thing.

Shanghai上海Shàng hǎiand和héNew York纽约Niǔ yuēmuch the same差不多chà bu duō。

Shanghai and New York are much the same.

Remember: 差(difference) 不(not) 多(much) — "not much off." Decode the three characters and the meaning ("about the same / almost there") falls out for free.

    Watch out

    • As an adverb it also means "almost (there)": 差不多了 ("that's about enough"), 差不多十点 ("around ten").
    • For several items, add 都: 这几个都差不多.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Baca 差不多 secara harfiah akan menjelaskan maknanya: 差 (perbedaan) + 不 (tidak) + 多 (banyak) = "tidak banyak bedanya." Oleh karena itu artinya "kira-kira sama, kurang lebih, hampir." Bisa berdiri sendiri sebagai predikat, menghubungkan dua hal (A 跟 B 差不多), atau berfungsi sebagai adverb sebelum kuantitas.

    Struktur: Subject + 差不多 · A + 跟 / 和 + B + 差不多

these这zhètwo两个liǎng gewords词cí的demeanings意思yì siabout the same差不多chà bu duō。

Dua kata ini berarti kira-kira sama.

Shanghai上海Shàng hǎiand和héNew York纽约Niǔ yuēmuch the same差不多chà bu duō。

Shanghai dan New York cukup mirip.

Ingat: 差(perbedaan) 不(tidak) 多(banyak) — "tidak jauh berbeda." Bedah ketiga karakter tersebut dan maknanya ("kira-kira sama / hampir benar") akan muncul dengan sendirinya.

    Hati-hati

    • Sebagai adverb juga berarti "hampir (selesai)": 差不多了 ("cukuplah itu"), 差不多十点 ("sekitar jam sepuluh").
    • Untuk beberapa item, tambahkan 都: 这几个都差不多.
    2.2

    看来 — "tampaknya, apparently"

    English

看来 offers up the speaker's read of a situation — "it seems, apparently." Use 在 + person + 看来 for "in someone's view." The pitfall is confusing it with 看起来 ("it looks like" from physical appearance): 看来 is a judgement in your head, 看起来 is what your eyes report.

    Structure: 看来 + Judgement · 在 + Person + 看来

    it seems看来kàn láihe他tānot不bùcoming来lái了le。

    It seems he's not coming.

    in在zàimy我wǒview看来kàn láithis,这个zhè geplan计划jì huàwon't work行不通xíng bu tōng。

In my view, this plan won't work.

Remember: 看来 = "drawing it together, I reckon…" (a conclusion); 看起来 = "it appears to the eye." 来 is the "arriving at a verdict" part — you've weighed things and landed on a view.

    Watch out

    • 在我看来 is "in my opinion" — a personal verdict, not a fact.
    Bahasa Indonesia

看来 menyajikan pandangan pembicara terhadap situasi — "tampaknya, apparently." Gunakan 在 + orang + 看来 untuk "menurut pandangan seseorang." Kesalahpahaman umum adalah mencampurnya dengan 看起来 ("terlihat seperti" dari penampilan fisik): 看来 adalah penilaian di pikiranmu, 看起来 adalah apa yang dilaporkan mata.

    Struktur: 看来 + Judgement · 在 + Person + 看来

    it seems看来kàn láihe他tānot不bùcoming来lái了le。

    Tampaknya dia tidak akan datang.

    in在zàimy我wǒview看来kàn láithis,这个zhè geplan计划jì huàwon't work行不通xíng bu tōng。

Menurut pandanganku, rencana ini tidak akan berhasil.

Ingat: 看来 = "merangkumnya, kayaknya…" (kesimpulan); 看起来 = "tampak di mata." 来 adalah bagian "sampai pada putusan" — kamu telah menimbang-timbang dan menemukan sebuah pandangan.

    Hati-hati

    • 在我看来 adalah "menurut pendapatku" — sebuah penilaian pribadi, bukan fakta.
    2.3

    正好 — "pas, kebetulan"

    English

正好 is a happy bullseye — 正 (exactly) + 好 (right) — "just right" (in size, time, or amount) or "as it happens, happen to." It plays both adjective and adverb.

Structure: Subject + 正好 + Verb Phrase · … 正好 (adjective)

you你nǐcame来lái了leI!我wǒwas just about to正好zhèng hǎo要yàolook for找zhǎoyou你nǐ。

You're here! I was just about to look for you.

this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fu的desize大小dà xiǎojust right正好zhèng hǎo。

This outfit is just the right size.

Remember: 正(exactly) 好(right) = a lucky bullseye — the right size, the right moment, the right amount, all landing at once.

    Watch out

    • Adverb (正好要走 "just about to leave") and adjective (大小正好 "just the right size") — same word, two roles.
    Bahasa Indonesia

正好 adalah target tepat yang menyenangkan — 正 (tepat) + 好 (pas) — "pas" (dalam ukuran, waktu, atau jumlah) atau "kebetulan, kebetulan saja." Berfungsi sebagai adjektiva maupun adverb.

Struktur: Subject + 正好 + Verb Phrase · … 正好 (adjektiva)

you你nǐcame来lái了leI!我wǒwas just about to正好zhèng hǎo要yàolook for找zhǎoyou你nǐ。

Kamu datang! Aku baru mau mencari kamu.

this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fu的desize大小dà xiǎojust right正好zhèng hǎo。

    Pakaian ini pas banget ukurannya.

Ingat: 正(tepat) 好(pas) = target tepat yang beruntung — ukuran pas, momen pas, jumlah pas, semuanya terpenuhi sekaligus.

    Hati-hati

    • Adverb (正好要走 "baru mau pergi") dan adjektiva (大小正好 "pas banget ukurannya") — kata yang sama, dua peran.
    2.4

只好 — "tak punya pilihan lain tapi"

    English

只好 is the only option left — 只 (only) + 好 (good/workable) — "the only workable choice, so I'll take it (reluctantly)." English: "have no choice but to, can only, had to."

Structure: (Situation,) (Subject +) 只好 + Verb Phrase

the restaurants餐厅cān tīngall都dōuclosed关门guān mén了lewe,我们wǒ menhad no choice but to只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùeat吃chīfast food快餐kuài cān。

The restaurants were all closed, so we had no choice but to get fast food.

I我wǒforgot忘wàng了leto book预约yù yuēso had to,只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùqueue排队pái duì。

I forgot to book, so I had to queue.

Remember: 只好 = "the ONLY good option left" — you do it, but you'd rather not. For a stronger, more forced "have to," step up to 不得不.

    Watch out

    • It always carries a whiff of reluctance — the choice isn't a happy one.
    Bahasa Indonesia

只好 adalah satu-satunya opsi tersisa — 只 (hanya) + 好 (bagus/bisa dipakai) — "satu-satunya pilihan yang bisa dipakai, jadi aku ambil (dengan enggan)." Bahasa Inggris: "have no choice but to, can only, had to."

Struktur: (Situation,) (Subject +) 只好 + Verb Phrase

the restaurants餐厅cān tīngall都dōuclosed关门guān mén了lewe,我们wǒ menhad no choice but to只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùeat吃chīfast food快餐kuài cān。

Restorannya semua tutup, jadi kami tak punya pilihan lain tapi makan makanan cepat saji.

I我wǒforgot忘wàng了leto book预约yù yuēso had to,只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùqueue排队pái duì。

Aku lupa pesan, jadi harus antre.

Ingat: 只好 = "opsi baik TERAKHIR yang tersisa" — kamu melakukannya, tapi sebenarnya tidak ingin. Untuk "harus" yang lebih kuat dan dipaksa, naikkan ke 不得不.

    Hati-hati

    • Selalu membawa nuansa keengganan — pilihannya bukan pilihan yang bahagia.
    2.5

    又 + 不 / 没 — penyangkalan penekanan

    English

This 又 has nothing to do with "again." In front of 不 / 没 it adds a defensive, argumentative kick — "(but) it's not even / it's not as if …." You'll hear it constantly with 干吗 / 干嘛 ("why on earth").

    Structure: 又 + 不 / 没 + Predicate

    ask问wènme我wǒwhy干吗gàn máI?我wǒit's not as if又yòudon't不bùknow知道zhī dào。

Why ask me? It's not as if I'd know.

these这些zhè xiēdishes菜càiit's not as if又yòuhaven't没méigone off坏huàiwhy,为什么wèi shén me要yàothrow out扔rēng?

The food hasn't even gone off — why throw it out?

Remember: 又 + 不/没 = the "it's-not-as-if" shrug (又不是, 又没…) — a verbal eye-roll defending yourself. It is not the "again" 又, even though it's the same character.

    Watch out

    • It needs that defensive context — without an implied "so why…?", it reads as plain "again."
    Bahasa Indonesia

又 ini tidak ada hubungannya dengan "lagi." Di depan 不 / 没 ia menambahkan sentuhan pertahanan, argumen — "(tapi) bahkan tidak / seolah-olah …." Akan sering didengar bersama 干吗 / 干嘛 ("kenapa sih").

    Struktur: 又 + 不 / 没 + Predicate

    ask问wènme我wǒwhy干吗gàn máI?我wǒit's not as if又yòudon't不bùknow知道zhī dào。

Kenapa tanya aku? Seolah-olah aku tahu kok.

these这些zhè xiēdishes菜càiit's not as if又yòuhaven't没méigone off坏huàiwhy,为什么wèi shén me要yàothrow out扔rēng?

Makanan belum busuk — kenapa buang?

Ingat: 又 + 不/没 = cempreng "seolah-olah bukan" (又不是, 又没…) — menggelengkan kepala secara verbal untuk membela diri. Ini bukan 又 yang berarti "lagi", meskipun menggunakan karakter yang sama.

    Hati-hati

    • Membutuhkan konteks pertahanan itu — tanpa implikasi "lalu kenapa…?", akan terbaca sebagai "lagi" biasa.
    2.6

    可 + Adjektiva + 了 — penekanan "benar-benar, sangat"

    English

The adverb 可 slams an adjective home — "really, so" — usually against what you'd expect. It's informal and northern-flavoured, and it almost always closes with 了.

    Structure: 可 + Adjective + 了

    this这只zhè zhīpuppy小狗xiǎo gǒuso可kěnaughty淘气táo qì了le!

    This puppy is so naughty!

    he他tāreally可kěimpressive优秀yōu xiù了le!

    He's really impressive!

Remember: 可…了 wraps an adjective in a "wow, really!" (可好了, 可漂亮了, 可大了). It nearly always bookends with 了, and has a chatty, northern ring. (Note 可爱/可贵 are not examples of this pattern — there 可- is a word-building prefix meaning "-able / worthy of," not the emphatic 可.)

    Watch out

    • 可 also means "but," can stress a verb (我可没说), or mean "finally" — context picks the sense.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Adverb 可 menancapkan adjektiva dengan kuat — "benar-benar, sangat" — biasanya melawan apa yang diharapkan. Kasual dan bernuansa utara, hampir selalu diakhiri dengan 了.

    Struktur: 可 + Adjective + 了

    this这只zhè zhīpuppy小狗xiǎo gǒuso可kěnaughty淘气táo qì了le!

    Anak anjing ini nakal banget!

    he他tāreally可kěimpressive优秀yōu xiù了le!

    Dia benar-benar mengesankan!

Ingat: 可…了 membungkus adjektiva dengan "wow, beneran!" (可好了, 可漂亮了, 可大了). Hampir selalu diapit oleh 了, dan memiliki nada obrolan khas utara. (Catatan 可爱/可贵 bukan contoh pola ini — di sana 可- adalah awalan pembentukan kata yang berarti "-able / layak," bukan 可 penekanan.).

    Hati-hati

    • 可 juga berarti "tapi", bisa menekankan kata kerja (我可没说), atau berarti "akhirnya" — konteks menentukan maknanya.
    2.7

    原来 — "sebenarnya; ternyata"

    English

原来 wears two hats: "original(ly), former" (原来的 + noun), and "so it turns out / all along" — that lightbulb moment when you suddenly grasp something you'd missed.

    Structure: 原来 + 的 + Noun · Subject + 原来 + Predicate

    so原来yuán láiyou你nǐare是shìa teacher老师lǎo shī啊a!

    Oh, so you're a teacher!

    we我们wǒ menoriginally原来yuán láilived住zhùin在zàiPudong浦东Pǔ dōng。

    We originally lived in Pudong.

Remember: both senses share "the way things really were all along." Realisation: 原来如此 ("ah, so that's it!"). "Former": 原来的价格 ("the original price"). Contrast 本来 ("originally, but it changed") at the end of this level.

    Watch out

    • The "aha!" sense is the one that surprises learners — 原来 ≠ "originally" there, it's "it turns out."
    Bahasa Indonesia

原来 mengenakan dua topi: "asal, mantan" (原来的 + kata benda), dan "ternyata / sejak dulu" — momen lampu menyala ketika Anda tiba-tiba memahami sesuatu yang terlewatkan.

    Struktur: 原来 + 的 + Noun · Subject + 原来 + Predicate

    so原来yuán láiyou你nǐare是shìa teacher老师lǎo shī啊a!

    Oh, ternyata kamu guru!

    we我们wǒ menoriginally原来yuán láilived住zhùin在zàiPudong浦东Pǔ dōng。

    Asalnya kami tinggal di Pudong.

Ingat: kedua makna berbagi "bagaimana sebenarnya hal itu sejak dulu." Realisasi: 原来如此 ("ah, itu dia!!"). "Former": 原来的价格 ("harga aslinya"). Kontras 本来 ("sebenarnya, tapi berubah") di akhir level ini.

    Hati-hati

    • Makna "aha!" adalah yang mengejutkan peserta belajar — 原来 ≠ "sebelumnya" di sana, itu berarti "ternyata."
    2.8

差点(儿) — "hampir (dan tidak terjadi)"

    English

差点 = "off by a hair" — something nearly happened, usually something bad, and the feeling is relief that it didn't. The iron rule: whatever follows 差点 did not actually happen.

    Structure: Subject + 差点 (+ 就) + Predicate (+ 了)

    the car车chēalmost差点chà diǎnhit撞到zhuàng dàome我wǒ。

The car almost hit me (it didn't).

    I我wǒtoday今天jīn tiānalmost差点chà diǎnwas late迟到chí dào了le。

    I was almost late today.

Remember: 差点 = "missed it by THAT much" → the thing did not happen (and good thing too). The famous quirk: 差点没摔倒 still means "almost fell" — the 没 adds feeling, not logic.

    Watch out

    • For a wanted outcome, 差点没 flips to relief it did happen: 差点没赶上 ("only just caught it").
    Bahasa Indonesia

差点 = "meleset selipar" — sesuatu hampir terjadi, biasanya sesuatu buruk, dan perasaannya lega karena tidak terjadi. Aturan besi: apa pun yang mengikuti 差点 tidak benar-benar terjadi.

    Struktur: Subject + 差点 (+ 就) + Predicate (+ 了)

    the car车chēalmost差点chà diǎnhit撞到zhuàng dàome我wǒ。

Mobil hampir menabrak saya (tidak menabrak).

    I我wǒtoday今天jīn tiānalmost差点chà diǎnwas late迟到chí dào了le。

    Saya hampir terlambat hari ini.

Ingat: 差点 = "meleset dengan SEBEGITU BANYAK-nya" → hal tersebut tidak terjadi (dan alangkah baiknya). Aneksa terkenal: 差点没摔倒 tetap berarti "hampir jatuh" — 没 menambah nuansa, bukan logika.

    Hati-hati

    • Untuk hasil yang diinginkan, 差点没 berbalik menjadi rasa lega bahwa hal itu terjadi: 差点没赶上 ("hampir saja terlewat / baru saja sempat menangkapnya").
    2.9

    从来 + 都 — "selalu, sepanjang masa"

    English

从来 ("from the very start") with 都(是) means "always, have always." But you'll meet it far more often in the negative — 从来不 / 从来没 = "never (not once)."

    Structure: Subject + 从来 + 都(是) + Predicate

    he他tāalways从来cóng láihas都dōubeen like this这样zhè yàng。

    He's always been like this.

    I我wǒnever从来cóng lái不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ。

    I never drink.

Remember: 从来 = "from the beginning until now." Positive form needs 都 (从来都…); negative is the everyday one — 从来不 / 从来没 = "never, not a single time."

    Watch out

    • Don't drop the 都 in the positive: 从来都很努力 ✓, not 从来很努力.
    Bahasa Indonesia

从来 ("dari awal sekali") dengan 都(是) berarti "selalu, selalu." Namun Anda akan lebih sering menemukannya dalam bentuk negatif — 从来不 / 从来没 = "tidak pernah (sama sekali)."

    Struktur: Subject + 从来 + 都(是) + Predicate

    he他tāalways从来cóng láihas都dōubeen like this这样zhè yàng。

    Dia selalu seperti ini.

    I我wǒnever从来cóng lái不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ。

    Saya tidak pernah minum.

Ingat: 从来 = "dari awal hingga sekarang." Bentuk positif memerlukan 都 (从来都…); negatif adalah bentuk sehari-hari — 从来不 / 从来没 = "tidak pernah, sama sekali tidak.",

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan hilangkan 都 dalam bentuk positif: 从来都很努力 ✓, bukan 从来很努力.
    2.10

结果 — "sebagai akibatnya, pada akhirnya"

    English

As a connector, 结果 ("result") means "as a result, and in the end" — and it usually drags in an unexpected or unwelcome outcome. It opens the second clause with a twist.

Structure: Reason / Situation ,结果 + Result

    she她tādressed穿chuān得devery很hěnlightly少shǎoas a result,结果jié guǒcaught a cold感冒gǎn mào了le。

She dressed too lightly and ended up catching a cold.

    he他tādrove开kāi得detoo太tàifast快kuàias a result,结果jié guǒhit撞到zhuàng dào了lesomeone人rén。

He drove too fast and ended up hitting someone.

Remember: 结果 = "the (often nasty) upshot." It sets up a payoff that's usually bad or surprising — "…and as a result, of course, X."

    Watch out

    • It's also a plain noun ("result"): 考试结果 ("the exam results").
    Bahasa Indonesia

Sebagai penghubung, 结果 ("hasil") berarti "sebagai akibatnya, dan pada akhirnya" — dan biasanya menarik keluar hasil yang tak terduga atau tidak diinginkan. Ini membuka klausa kedua dengan kejutan.

Struktur: Reason / Situation ,结果 + Result

    she她tādressed穿chuān得devery很hěnlightly少shǎoas a result,结果jié guǒcaught a cold感冒gǎn mào了le。

Dia berpakaian terlalu tipis dan berakhir terkena flu.

    he他tādrove开kāi得detoo太tàifast快kuàias a result,结果jié guǒhit撞到zhuàng dào了lesomeone人rén。

Dia berkendara terlalu cepat dan berakhir menabrak seseorang.

Ingat: 结果 = "akibatnya (yang seringkali pahit)." Ini menyiapkan konsekuensi yang biasanya buruk atau mengejutkan — "…dan sebagai akibatnya, tentu saja, X.",

    Hati-hati

    • Ini juga kata benda biasa ("hasil"): 考试结果 ("nilai ujian").
    2.11

    够 — "cukup"

    English

够 means "enough, sufficient." Its trick is that position flips the mood: before a verb/adjective it's "enough to …" (够吃, 够大); after certain verbs it's "fed up" (受够了). It often takes 了.

    Structure: 够 + Verb / Adjective (+ 了) · Verb + 够 + 了

    we我们wǒ menbought买mǎi的defood菜càienough够gòuto eat吃chī了le。

    We bought enough food.

    I我wǒput up with it受shòuenough够gòu了le!

    I've had enough!

Remember: 够 before = "enough to" (够高); 受够了 / V够了 after = "had enough OF it." Same word, opposite feeling, decided by which side of the verb it sits.

    Watch out

    • 吃够了 = "sick of eating it" (fed up), not "ate enough" — mind that "fed-up" tilt.
    Bahasa Indonesia

够 berarti "cukup, memadai." Triknya adalah posisi membalikkan nuansa: sebelum kata kerja/sifat ia berarti "cukup untuk …" (够吃, 够大); setelah kata kerja tertentu ia berarti "sudah cukup / jemu" (受够了). Sering mengambil 了.

    Struktur: 够 + Verb / Adjective (+ 了) · Verb + 够 + 了

    we我们wǒ menbought买mǎi的defood菜càienough够gòuto eat吃chī了le。

    Kami membeli makanan yang cukup.

    I我wǒput up with it受shòuenough够gòu了le!

    Saya sudah cukup!

Ingat: 够 di depan = "cukup untuk" (够高); 受够了 / V够了 di belakang = "sudah JEMU dengannya." Kata yang sama, perasaan berlawanan, ditentukan oleh sisi mana dari kata kerja tempat ia berada.

    Hati-hati

    • 吃够了 = "jemu makan itu" (sudah jemu), bukan "makan secukupnya" — perhatikan kemiringan "jemu" itu.
    2.12

    甚至 — "bahkan, sampai-sampai"

    English

甚至 hauls in the most extreme or surprising case — "even, so much that." It frequently links arms with 连 … 都 / 也 for extra punch.

    Structure: ……,甚至 (连) + Extreme Case + 都 / 也 …

    he他tātoo太tàibusy忙máng了leeven,甚至shèn zhìto eat吃chīlunch午饭wǔ fàn的detime时间shí jiān都dōuhasn't没有méi yǒu。

He's so busy he doesn't even have time for lunch.

this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tívery很hěnsimple简单jiǎn dāneven,甚至shèn zhì连liána child孩子hái zi都dōuknows知道zhī dào。

It's so simple even a child knows the answer.

Remember: 甚至 = "…even THIS!" — it reaches for the most extreme example to drive a point home, often hand-in-hand with 连…都.

    Watch out

    • It escalates — the thing after 甚至 should be the most surprising item, not just another one.
    Bahasa Indonesia

甚至 membawa masuk kasus yang paling ekstrem atau mengejutkan — "bahkan, sedemikian rupa sehingga." Sering bergandengan tangan dengan 连 … 都 / 也 untuk efek ekstra.

    Struktur: ……,甚至 (连) + Extreme Case + 都 / 也 …

    he他tātoo太tàibusy忙máng了leeven,甚至shèn zhìto eat吃chīlunch午饭wǔ fàn的detime时间shí jiān都dōuhasn't没有méi yǒu。

Dia sangat sibuk sehingga bahkan tidak punya waktu untuk makan siang.

this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tívery很hěnsimple简单jiǎn dāneven,甚至shèn zhì连liána child孩子hái zi都dōuknows知道zhī dào。

Ini sangat sederhana bahkan seorang anak kecil tahu jawabannya.

Ingat: 甚至 = "…bahkan INI!" — ia merujuk ke contoh paling ekstrem untuk menegaskan poin, sering berdampingan dengan 连…都.

    Hati-hati

    • Ini meningkatkan intensitas — hal setelah 甚至 harus merupakan item yang paling mengejutkan, bukan sekadar item lain.
    2.13

    还是 + 动词 + 吧 — "lebih baik, lagipula"

    English

Beyond "or," 还是 before a verb settles on the choice you prefer after weighing things up — "had better, I'd rather (after all)." It loves to close with 吧.

    Structure: Subject + 还是 + Verb Phrase + 吧

    after all还是hái shìtomorrow明天míng tiāngo去qù吧ba。

    Let's go tomorrow after all.

    you你nǐhad better还是hái shìnot别biégo去qù了le。

    You'd better not go.

Remember: 还是…吧 = "on reflection, better to…" — a verdict reached after mulling it over. Distinct from 还是 = "or" (in questions) or "still."

    Watch out

    • The 吧 softens it into a gentle suggestion — dropping it makes the decision sound firmer.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Selain "atau," 还是 sebelum kata kerja menetapkan pilihan yang Anda inginkan setelah mempertimbangkan segala hal — "lebih baik, saya lebih suka (lagipula)." Suka ditutup dengan 吧.

    Struktur: Subject + 还是 + Verb Phrase + 吧

    after all还是hái shìtomorrow明天míng tiāngo去qù吧ba。

    Layaknya, besoklah kita pergi.

    you你nǐhad better还是hái shìnot别biégo去qù了le。

    Kau sebaiknya tidak pergi.

Ingat: 还是…吧 = "setelah dipertimbangkan, lebih baik …" — vonis yang dicapai setelah merenungkan segalanya. Berbeda dengan 还是 = "atau" (dalam pertanyaan) atau "masih/terus.".

    Hati-hati

    • 吧 melunakkannya menjadi saran lembut — menghilangkannya membuat keputusan terdengar lebih tegas.
    2.14

    最好 — "lebih baik, sebaiknya"

    English

最好 ("best") moonlights as an adverb to give gentle advice — "had better, it would be best to."

Structure: Subject + 最好 + Predicate

you你nǐhad better最好zuì hǎofirst先xiānrest休息xiū xia bit一下yí xià。

You'd better rest a bit first.

    outside外面wài miàncold冷lěngbest to,最好zuì hǎomore多duōwear穿chuān点diǎn。

It's cold out — best wear a bit more.

Remember: 最好 = "the best thing would be…" — advice with a soft touch, gentler than 应该 or 得. Negative: 最好别 ("had best not").

    Watch out

    • It's a suggestion, not a rule — for an obligation use 得 / 必须 instead.
    Bahasa Indonesia

最好 ("terbaik") bertindak ganda sebagai keterangan untuk memberikan nasihat lembut — "lebih baik, sebaiknya.".

Struktur: Subject + 最好 + Predicate

you你nǐhad better最好zuì hǎofirst先xiānrest休息xiū xia bit一下yí xià。

Kau sebaiknya istirahat sedikit terlebih dahulu.

    outside外面wài miàncold冷lěngbest to,最好zuì hǎomore多duōwear穿chuān点diǎn。

Udara dingin di luar — sebaiknya pakai lebih banyak lagi.

Ingat: 最好 = "hal terbaik adalah …" — nasihat dengan sentuhan lembut, lebih halus daripada 应该 atau 得. Negatif: 最好别 ("sebaiknya jangan").

    Hati-hati

    • Ini adalah saran, bukan aturan — untuk kewajiban gunakan 得 / 必须.
    2.15

不得不 — "harus, tak bisa tidak"

    English

不得不 stacks a double negative — "not (不) able to not (得不) do" — into a reluctant, unavoidable "have to." It's more forced and grudging than 必须.

Structure: Subject + 不得不 + Verb

the lift电梯diàn tīagain又yòubroke坏huài了lewe,我们wǒ menhad to不得不bù dé bùclimb爬páthe stairs楼梯lóu tī。

The lift broke again, so we had to take the stairs.

you你nǐtoo太tàigood厉害lì hai了leI,我wǒhave to不得不bù dé bùadmit it承认chéng rèn。

You're so good — I have to admit it.

Remember: 不得不 = "can't NOT do it" (two negatives cancelling to a grudging yes). It shouts no way out; 必须 is the calmer, neutral "must / it's required."

    Watch out

    • Don't miscount the negatives — 不得不去 means "have to go," not "can't go."
    Bahasa Indonesia

不得不 menumpuk dua negasi — "tidak (不) mampu untuk tidak (得不) melakukan" — menjadi "harus" yang reluctant, tak terhindarkan. Ini lebih dipaksakan dan enggan daripada 必须.

Struktur: Subject + 不得不 + Verb

the lift电梯diàn tīagain又yòubroke坏huài了lewe,我们wǒ menhad to不得不bù dé bùclimb爬páthe stairs楼梯lóu tī。

Lift rusak lagi, jadi kami harus naik tangga.

you你nǐtoo太tàigood厉害lì hai了leI,我wǒhave to不得不bù dé bùadmit it承认chéng rèn。

Kau begitu hebat — aku harus mengakui itu.

Ingat: 不得不 = "tak bisa TIDAK melakukannya" (dua negasi saling meniadakan menjadi yes yang enggan). Ini berseru tak ada jalan keluar; 必须 adalah "harus / wajib" yang lebih tenang dan netral.

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan salah hitung negasinya — 不得不去 berarti "harus pergi," bukan "tidak bisa pergi.".
    2.16

到底 — "di dunia / lagipula / akhirnya"

    English

到底 = "all the way to the bottom" — and it digs for the real answer. Three jobs: pressing in a question ("on earth, exactly"), "after all / in the end," and "finally" (like 终于).

    Structure: …… 到底 …… · 到底 + Verb + 了

    you你nǐon earth到底dào dǐwant想xiǎngto say说shuōwhat什么shén me?

What on earth are you trying to say?

the weather天气tiān qìfinally到底dào dǐwarmed up暖和nuǎn huo了le。

The weather has finally warmed up.

Remember: 到底 = "get to the BOTTOM of it." In a question → "on earth / exactly" (你到底去不去?); in a statement → "after all / finally."

    Watch out

    • In a yes-no question, use the V-not-V form: 你到底去不去? ("are you going or not?").
    Bahasa Indonesia

到底 = "sampai ke dasar" — dan menggali jawaban yang sebenarnya. Tiga tugas: menekan dalam pertanyaan ("di dunia, persisnya"), "lagipula / pada akhirnya," dan "akhirnya" (seperti 终于).

    Struktur: …… 到底 …… · 到底 + Verb + 了

    you你nǐon earth到底dào dǐwant想xiǎngto say说shuōwhat什么shén me?

Di dunia apa kau sedang mencoba mengatakan?

the weather天气tiān qìfinally到底dào dǐwarmed up暖和nuǎn huo了le。

    Cuaca akhirnya mulai menghangat.

Ingat: 到底 = "mencapai BAGIAN BAWAH-nya." Dalam pertanyaan → "di dunia / persis" (你到底去不去?); dalam pernyataan → "lagipula / akhirnya.".

    Hati-hati

    • Dalam pertanyaan ya-tidak, gunakan bentuk V-not-V: 你到底去不去? ("kau pergi atau tidak?").
    2.17

究竟 — "persis, di dunia" (formal)

    English

究竟 is the more formal twin of 到底 — it sharpens a question hunting for a specific fact (a name, a time, a reason): "exactly, on earth."

Structure: 究竟 + Question Word …

    this这个zhè geperson人rénon earth究竟jiū jìngis是shìwho谁shéi?

Who on earth is this person?

we我们wǒ menexactly究竟jiū jìngstill还háihave to要yàowait等děnghow long多久duō jiǔ?

Exactly how much longer do we have to wait?

Remember: 究竟 = 到底 in a suit. Same "on earth / exactly" in questions, just a more written, formal register.

    Watch out

    • Both press a question; 究竟 simply sounds more bookish than the everyday 到底.
    Bahasa Indonesia

究竟 adalah kembar yang lebih formal dari 到底 — ia mempertajam pertanyaan yang mencari fakta spesifik (nama, waktu, alasan): "tepatnya, di dunia ini."

Struktur: 究竟 + Question Word …

    this这个zhè geperson人rénon earth究竟jiū jìngis是shìwho谁shéi?

    Siapa sih orang ini?

we我们wǒ menexactly究竟jiū jìngstill还háihave to要yàowait等děnghow long多久duō jiǔ?

Tepatnya berapa lama lagi kita harus menunggu?

Ingat: 究竟 = 到底 dalam jas. Sama artinya "di dunia ini / tepat" dalam pertanyaan, hanya saja gaya bahasanya lebih tertulis dan formal.

    Hati-hati

    • Keduanya menekan sebuah pertanyaan; 究竟 terdengar lebih akademis daripada 到底 yang sehari-hari.
    2.18

    刚 — "baru (semtara lalu)"

    English

The adverb 刚 (or 刚刚) marks an action that happened a short time ago — "just." It sits right before the verb, and with a duration it needs no "ago" word.

    Structure: Subject + 刚 + Verb

    we我们wǒ menjust刚gāngfound out知道zhī dào。

    We just found out.

    he他tājust刚gāngcame to来láiChina中国Zhōng guótwo两个liǎng gemonths ago月yuè。

He came to China just two months ago.

Remember: 刚 = adverb "just," glued to the verb (刚到) — and "two months ago" needs no extra word: 刚来两个月. Don't mix it up with the noun 刚才 ("a moment ago") — see the comparison file later.

    Watch out

    • 刚 + duration measures time from now; 刚才 marks a point in the recent past.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Kata keterangan 刚 (atau 刚刚) menandai aksi yang terjadi beberapa saat yang lalu — "baru." Ia diletakkan tepat sebelum kata kerja, dan jika disertai durasi tidak perlu kata "yang lalu."

    Struktur: Subject + 刚 + Verb

    we我们wǒ menjust刚gāngfound out知道zhī dào。

    Kami baru tahu.

    he他tājust刚gāngcame to来láiChina中国Zhōng guótwo两个liǎng gemonths ago月yuè。

Dia datang ke China baru dua bulan yang lalu.

Ingat: 刚 = kata keterangan "baru," melekat pada kata kerja (刚到) — dan "dua bulan yang lalu" tidak perlu kata tambahan: 刚来两个月. Jangan tertukar dengan kata benda 刚才 ("beberapa saat yang lalu") — lihat file perbandingan nanti.

    Hati-hati

    • 刚 + durasi mengukur waktu dari sekarang; 刚才 menandai titik di masa lalu yang dekat.
    2.19

    一 +量词+ 一 +量词 — "satu per satu"

    English

Double up 一 + measure word and you get something happening one unit at a time — "one by one, step by step." 个 is the default measure word, but slot in whichever fits the noun.

    Structure: 一 + MW + 一 + MW (+ Noun)

    don't别biéall shout吵chǎoone,一个yí geby one一个yí gespeak说shuō。

Don't all talk at once — one at a time.

the child孩子hái ziday一天yì tiānby day一天yì tiāngrows up长大zhǎng dà。

The child grows up day by day.

Remember: repeat the measure word → "one ___ at a time": 一个一个 (one by one), 一步一步 (step by step), 一天一天 (day by day), 一遍一遍 (over and over).

    Watch out

    • Match the measure word to the noun — 一步一步 for steps, 一个一个 for countable things.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Gandakan 一 + kata pengukur dan Anda mendapatkan sesuatu yang terjadi satu unit sekaligus — "satu per satu, selangkah demi selangkah." 个 adalah kata pengukur default, tetapi masukkan kata pengukur mana pun yang sesuai dengan kata benda.

    Struktur: 一 + MW + 一 + MW (+ Noun)

    don't别biéall shout吵chǎoone,一个yí geby one一个yí gespeak说shuō。

Jangan semua bicara sekaligus — satu per satu.

the child孩子hái ziday一天yì tiānby day一天yì tiāngrows up长大zhǎng dà。

Anak itu tumbuh besar hari demi hari.

Ingat: ulang kata pengukur → "satu ___ sekaligus": 一个一个 (satu per satu), 一步一步 (selangkah demi selangkah), 一天一天 (hari demi hari), 一遍一遍 (berkali-kali).

    Hati-hati

    • Sesuaikan kata pengukur dengan kata benda — 一步一步 untuk langkah, 一个一个 untuk benda yang dapat dihitung.
    2.20

    本来 — "awalnya (tetapi berubah)"

    English

本来 means "originally, in the first place" — and it usually sets up that things later changed course. It often runs with 是 … 的 plus a 但是 / 可是 clause; with 就 it flips to "of course (it always was)."

    Structure: Subject + 本来 (+ 是) … 的 ,但是 … · 本来就 …

I我wǒoriginally本来běn láimeant要yàoto go去qù的debut,可是kě shìthen后来hòu láigot sick病bìng了le。

I'd meant to go, but then I got sick.

moving house搬家bān jiāto begin with本来běn lái就jiùvery很hěntroublesome麻烦má fan。

Moving house is a hassle to begin with.

Remember: 本来 sets up a U-turn — "originally X… but then Y." Contrast 原来 (a sudden realisation). And 本来就 = "of course / obviously — it always was."

    Watch out

    • If nothing changed and you mean "it turns out," you want 原来, not 本来.
    Bahasa Indonesia

本来 berarti "awalnya, sejak awal" — dan biasanya menetapkan bahwa hal-hal kemudian berubah arah. Sering berjalan bersama 是 … 的 plus klausa 但是 / 可是; dengan 就 berbalik menjadi "tentu saja (selalu begitu)."

    Struktur: Subject + 本来 (+ 是) … 的 ,但是 … · 本来就 …

I我wǒoriginally本来běn láimeant要yàoto go去qù的debut,可是kě shìthen后来hòu láigot sick病bìng了le。

*Aku bermaksud pergi, tapi kemudian aku sakit."

moving house搬家bān jiāto begin with本来běn lái就jiùvery很hěntroublesome麻烦má fan。

*Pindah rumah memang ribet sejak awal."

Ingat: 本来 menetapkan belokan U — "awalnya X… tapi kemudian Y." Bandingkan dengan 原来 (kesadaran mendadak). Dan 本来就 = "tentu saja / jelas-jelas — selalu begitu."

    Hati-hati

    • Jika tidak ada perubahan dan Anda bermaksud "ternyata", Anda membutuhkan 原来, bukan 本来.
    2.21

    就 +主语 — "hanya (ini saja)"

    English

Park 就 in front of the subject or quantity and it spotlights how little there is — "only, just (this one)." It often rides with 一个 / 一次.

    Structure: 就 + Subject + Predicate · 就 + Verb + Number + MW

everyone大家dà jiā都dōuleft work下班xià bān了leonly,就jiùthe boss老板lǎo bǎnstill还háihasn't没méileft走zǒu。

Everyone's left work; only the boss is still here.

    I我wǒonly就jiùbeen there去过qù guoonce一次yí cì。

    I've only been there once.

Remember: like 才 + number, this 就 shrinks things to "only / just" (就老板, 就一次), underlining smallness. It's a different 就 from the "right away / as early as" one.

    Watch out

    • Context tells the two 就's apart: a small quantity nearby → "only"; a time → "as early as / then."
    Bahasa Indonesia

Tempatkan 就 di depan subjek atau kuantitas dan ia menyoroti betapa sedikitnya ada — "hanya, cuma (ini saja)." Sering berjalan bersama 一个 / 一次.

    Struktur: 就 + Subject + Predicate · 就 + Verb + Number + MW

everyone大家dà jiā都dōuleft work下班xià bān了leonly,就jiùthe boss老板lǎo bǎnstill还háihasn't没méileft走zǒu。

*Semua orang sudah pulang kerja; hanya bos yang masih di sini."

    I我wǒonly就jiùbeen there去过qù guoonce一次yí cì。

    *Aku baru sekali ke sana."

Ingat: seperti 才 + angka, 就 mengecilkan menjadi "hanya / cuma" (就老板, 就一次), menekankan kecilnya jumlah. Ini adalah 就 yang berbeda dari yang bermakna "langsung / sedini mungkin".

    Hati-hati

    • Konteks membedakan kedua 就 tersebut: kuantitas kecil di dekatnya → "hanya"; waktu → "sedini mungkin / lalu."
    2.22

千万 — "pastikan, apa pun yang kamu lakukan"

    English

千万 (literally "thousand ten-thousand") is an urgent plea — "be sure to / whatever you do (don't) …." The huge numbers are the emphasis. It almost always heads a command, paired with 别 / 不要 / 要.

    Structure: 千万 + (别 / 不要 / 要) + Verb Phrase

whatever you do千万qiān wàndon't别biéforget忘wàng了leto bring带dàiyour passport护照hù zhào。

Whatever you do, don't forget your passport.

on the way路上lù shàngdo be sure to千万qiān wàn要yàobe careful小心xiǎo xīn。

Do be careful on the way.

Remember: big numbers = big urgency. 千万 piles "thousand" on "ten-thousand" to mean "I really, really mean it." The go-to shape is 千万别… ("whatever you do, DON'T…").

    Watch out

    • It belongs in pleas and warnings — not a neutral statement.
    Bahasa Indonesia

千万 (harfiah "seribu sepuluh ribu") adalah seruan mendesak — "pastikan / apa pun yang kamu lakukan (jangan) …." Angka-angka besar adalah penekannya. Hampir selalu memulai perintah, dipasangkan dengan 别 / 不要 / 要.

    Struktur: 千万 + (别 / 不要 / 要) + Verb Phrase

whatever you do千万qiān wàndon't别biéforget忘wàng了leto bring带dàiyour passport护照hù zhào。

Apa pun yang kamu lakukan, jangan lupa pasportmu.

on the way路上lù shàngdo be sure to千万qiān wàn要yàobe careful小心xiǎo xīn。

    Hati-hatilah di jalan.

Ingat: angka besar = urgensi besar. 千万 menumpuk "seribu" pada "sepuluh ribu" untuk berarti "aku benar-benar, benar-benar bermaksud." Bentuk utamanya adalah 千万别… ("apa pun yang kamu lakukan, JANGAN …").

    Hati-hati

    • Ini cocok untuk seruan dan peringatan — bukan pernyataan netral.
    2.23

恐怕 — "aku takut (bahwa), kemungkinan"

    English

恐怕 has 恐 ("fear") right in it, and that's the feel: a likely but unwelcome prediction softened with "I'm afraid that, I worry that." It opens the clause, ideally before the subject, often with 要 / 会.

Structure: (Reason,) 恐怕 + Subject + Predicate

today今天jīn tiānI'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàgoing to要yàorain下雨xià yǔ。

I'm afraid it's going to rain today.

    I'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàI我wǒtomorrow明天míng tiāncan't不能bù néngcome来lái。

    I'm afraid I can't come tomorrow.

Remember: 恐怕 hides 恐 (fear) — it's a worried "I'm afraid…" about something unwelcome, never a cheerful guess. Place it before the subject for the most natural ring.

    Watch out

    • For a neutral "probably" (no dread), use 可能 instead.
    Bahasa Indonesia

恐怕 memiliki 恐 ("takut") di dalamnya, dan itulah nuansanya: prediksi mungkin namun tidak diinginkan yang dilunakkan dengan "aku takut bahwa, aku khawatir bahwa." Membuka klausa, idealnya sebelum subjek, sering dengan 要 / 会.

Struktur: (Reason,) 恐怕 + Subject + Predicate

today今天jīn tiānI'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàgoing to要yàorain下雨xià yǔ。

Saya takut akan hujan hari ini.

    I'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàI我wǒtomorrow明天míng tiāncan't不能bù néngcome来lái。

*Maaf, saya tidak bisa datang besok."

Ingat: 恐怕 menyembunyikan 恐 (ketakutan) — ini adalah "aku takut…” yang cemas tentang sesuatu tidak diinginkan, never tebak ceria. Letakkan sebelum subjek agar bunyinya paling alami.

    Hati-hati

    • Untuk "kemungkinan" netral (tanpa ketakutan), gunakan 可能.
    2.24

竟然 — "secara tak terduga, ternyata"

    English

竟然 (or just 竟) flags something surprising or hard to believe — "unexpectedly, actually, of all things." It sits after the subject. It's a near-match for 居然, just a touch milder.

Structure: Subject + 竟然 + Predicate

    such a这么zhè mehard难nán的deproblem题tíhe,他tāactually竟然jìng rángot it做zuòright对duì了le。

Such a hard problem — and he actually got it right!

    he他tāunexpectedly竟然jìng rán把bǎthis这zhè件jiànmatter事shìforgot忘wàng了le。

He actually forgot all about it!

Remember: 竟然 = a jaw-drop — "…and yet, of all things, X!" Best rendered "actually / of all things." ≈ 居然 (slightly stronger), opposite of 果然 ("sure enough, as expected").

    Watch out

    • It needs genuine surprise — drop it into a humdrum statement and it sounds off.
    Bahasa Indonesia

竟然 (atau sekadar 竟) menandai sesuatu yang menyesalkan atau sulit dipercaya — "secara tak terduga, ternyata, bahkan dari semua hal." Diletakkan setelah subjek. Ini hampir sama dengan 居然, hanya sedikit lebih lembut.

Struktur: Subject + 竟然 + Predicate

    such a这么zhè mehard难nán的deproblem题tíhe,他tāactually竟然jìng rángot it做zuòright对duì了le。

Masalah yang begitu sulit — dan dia ternyata benar!

    he他tāunexpectedly竟然jìng rán把bǎthis这zhè件jiànmatter事shìforgot忘wàng了le。

    Dia sampai lupa sepenuhnya!

Ingat: 竟然 = menjatuhkan rahang — "…dan yet, bahkan dari semua hal, X!" Paling baik diterjemahkan "ternyata / bahkan dari semua hal." ≈ 居然 (sedikit lebih kuat), lawan dari 果然 ("pas seperti yang diharapkan").

    Hati-hati

    • Memerlukan kejutan yang nyata — masukkan ke dalam pernyataan biasa dan akan terdengar janggal.
    2.25

    难道 — penanda pertanyaan retoris

    English

难道 turns a sentence into a rhetorical question of disbelief — "don't tell me …?, surely you don't …?". It usually closes with 吗 and fishes for agreement, not an answer. English has no single word for it.

    Structure: 难道 + Rhetorical Question + 吗?

don't tell me难道nán dàoyou你nǐreally真的zhēn debelieve相信xiāng xìnhim他tā吗ma?

You don't actually believe him, do you?

    today今天jīn tiānis是shìmy我wǒ的debirthday生日shēng rìdon't tell me,难道nán dàoyou你nǐdon't不bùknow知道zhī dào吗ma?

It's my birthday — don't tell me you forgot?

Remember: 难道 = a built-in "surely not…?!" It marks the whole sentence as rhetorical — you're pressing for the listener to agree, not to inform you. Usually 难道…吗?.

    Watch out

    • Don't answer a 难道 question literally — it's making a point, not seeking facts.
    Bahasa Indonesia

难道 mengubah kalimat menjadi pertanyaan retoris ketidakpercayaan — "jangan bilang …?, surely you don’t …?". Biasanya ditutup dengan 吗 dan mencari persetujuan, bukan jawaban. Bahasa Inggris tidak memiliki satu kata untuk ini.

    Struktur: 难道 + Rhetorical Question + 吗?

don't tell me难道nán dàoyou你nǐreally真的zhēn debelieve相信xiāng xìnhim他tā吗ma?

Kamu tidak sebenarnya percaya padanya, kan?

    today今天jīn tiānis是shìmy我wǒ的debirthday生日shēng rìdon't tell me,难道nán dàoyou你nǐdon't不bùknow知道zhī dào吗ma?

Hari ulang tahunku — jangan bilang kamu lupa?

Ingat: 难道 = "surely not…?!" bawaan. Menandai seluruh kalimat sebagai retoris — Anda sedang memaksa pendengar untuk setuju, bukan memberi informasi. Biasanya 难道…吗?.

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan jawab pertanyaan 难道 secara harfiah — ini sedang membuat poin, bukan mencari fakta.
    2.26

    先 … ,再 … — "pertama … lalu …"

    English

先 … 再 … lines two actions up in sequence — "first A, then B." As in HSK 3, the catch is that 再 here means "(and) then," not "again." Chain longer runs with 然后 / 接着.

    Structure: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃饭chī fàn。

Wash your hands first, then eat.

    you你nǐshould要yàofirst先xiāndo做zuòhomework作业zuò yèthen,再zàiwatch看kànTV电视diàn shì。

Do your homework first, then watch TV.

Remember: in 先…再…, 再 = "and then" (the next stepping stone), not "again." Extend the chain with 然后 / 接着 for three or more steps.

    Watch out

    • Out of this pairing, 再 does mean "again / more" — it's the 先…再… frame that fixes the "then" reading.
    Bahasa Indonesia

先 … 再 … menghubungkan dua tindakan secara berurutan — "pertama A, kemudian B." Seperti pada HSK 3, perangkapnya adalah bahwa 再 di sini berarti "(dan) kemudian," bukan "lagi." Rangkai rangkaian yang lebih panjang dengan 然后 / 接着.

    Struktur: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃饭chī fàn。

    Cuci tanganmu dulu, lalu makan.

    you你nǐshould要yàofirst先xiāndo做zuòhomework作业zuò yèthen,再zàiwatch看kànTV电视diàn shì。

Kerjakan PR-mu dulu, lalu tonton TV.

Ingat: dalam 先…再…, 再 = "kemudian" (batu loncatan berikutnya), bukan "lagi.

    Hati-hati

    • Dari pasangan ini, 再 memang berarti "lagi / lebih" — itu adalah kerangka 先…再… yang menetapkan pembacaan "kemudian."
    2.27

    也都 — "semua … juga"

    English

Stack 也 ("also") and 都 ("all") to sweep up a whole group as well — "all … too." The order is locked: 也 comes before 都.

Structure: Subject + 也都 + Predicate

    I'm我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎomy,我wǒ的defamily家人jiā rénall too也都yě dōuvery很hěnwell好hǎo。

I'm well, and so is all my family.

adults大人dà rénlike喜欢xǐ huanthis这个zhè gerestaurant餐厅cān tīngthe kids,孩子们hái zi menall too也都yě dōulike it喜欢xǐ huan。

The adults like this restaurant, and the kids all do too.

    挺 + 形容词 + 的 — "cukup, lumayan"

    English

挺 … 的 is a laid-back "quite, pretty, rather" — a relaxed, conversational intensifier that almost always wraps up with 的. It's softer than 很 and pops up constantly in everyday chat.

    Structure: 挺 + Adjective + 的

    your你nǐboyfriend男朋友nán péng youpretty挺tǐnghandsome帅shuài的de。

    Your boyfriend is pretty handsome.

    lately最近zuì jìneveryone大家dà jiā都dōuquite挺tǐngbusy忙máng的de。

Remember: 挺 wants its 的 — 挺好的, never bare 挺好. Think of 挺…的 as a matched pair of bookends around the adjective. It's the casual, easygoing "pretty / quite," softer than 很 / 非常.

    Watch out

    • Leave off the 的 and it sounds unfinished to a native ear.
    Bahasa Indonesia

挺 … 的 adalah "cukup, lumayan, agak" yang santai — penguat percakapan yang rileks yang hampir selalu diakhiri dengan 的. Ini lebih lembut dari 很 dan muncul terus-menerus dalam obrolan sehari-hari.

…… 什么的 — "dan sebagainya, dan semacamnya"

    English

什么的 rounds off an informal list with a casual wave of the hand — "and so on, and stuff like that." It can even trail a single item when it's obvious what else belongs in the group.

    Structure: Noun 1、Noun 2 (+ Noun 3) + 什么的

my我wǒgrandma奶奶nǎi naionly只zhǐeats吃chīvegetables蔬菜shū càitofu、豆腐dòu fuand so on什么的shén me de。

Maths, physics and so on — I'm not interested in any of it.

Remember: 什么的 = the chatty "…and stuff" — it waves at the rest without listing it. Its formal, neutral twin is 等 / 等等 (next).

    Watch out

    • It's casual — fine in speech, too loose for formal writing.
    Bahasa Indonesia

什么的 mengakhiri daftar tidak resmi dengan isyarat tangan santai — "dan sebagainya, dan barang-barang semacam itu." Bahkan bisa mengikuti satu item ketika jelas apa lagi yang termasuk dalam kelompok tersebut.

    Struktur: Noun 1、Noun 2 (+ Noun 3) + 什么的

my我wǒgrandma奶奶nǎi naionly只zhǐeats吃chīvegetables蔬菜shū càitofu、豆腐dòu fuand so on什么的shén me de。

    English

不过 means "but, however" — the gentlest of the "but" family, lighter and chattier than 但是 / 可是. It often just tacks a small qualification onto something otherwise positive.

    Structure: …… ,不过 ……

    Watch out

    • 不过 can also mean "only, merely" in other contexts (不过是个误会, "it's only a misunderstanding").
    Bahasa Indonesia

于是 — "lalu, oleh karena itu"

    English

于是 chains a cause to the action it triggers — "and so, thereupon." The second event follows straight from the first. It's a storytelling, past-tense word, usually with 了, and often with 就.

    Structure: …… ,于是 …… + 了

    Watch out

    • It belongs to narration of completed events — it pairs with 了 (and often 就), not with future plans.
    Bahasa Indonesia

还有 — "juga, dan satu hal lagi"

    English

还有 tacks on a further point as an afterthought — "also, plus, and another thing." It tends to open a fresh sentence after a comma or full stop, the spoken "oh, and…".

    Structure: ……。还有,……

Remember: 还有 = "oh, and also…" — the casual afterthought, literally "still have (more to say)." Order-a-coffee energy: one more thing, then one more.

    Watch out

    • It's informal — for a weightier "in addition," reach for 另外.
    Bahasa Indonesia

还有 menambahkan poin lanjutan sebagai pemikiran tambahan — "juga, plus, dan satu hal lagi." Cenderung membuka kalimat baru setelah koma atau titik, "oh, dan…" lisan.

    Struktur: ……。还有,……

Remember: 另外 = a SEPARATE extra point (另 = "other / separate") — more formal than 还有, and it likes a 还 / 也 to echo it. It also means "another (separate) one": 另外一个人.

    Watch out

    • The added clause usually carries 还 / 也 — 另外,我也…, not a bare 另外,我….
    Bahasa Indonesia

另外 membawa masuk poin terpisah, tambahan — "selain itu, besides." Sedikit lebih formal daripada 还有 dan biasanya berpasangan dengan 还 / 也 dalam klausa yang ditambahkan. (Ini juga berarti "lain, terpisah.")

Ingat: 另外 = poin tambahan TERPISAH (另 = "lain / terpisah") — lebih formal daripada 还有, dan menyukai 还 / 也 untuk menggemainya. Ini juga berarti "yang lain (terpisah)": 另外一个人.

    Hati-hati

    • Klausa yang ditambahkan biasanya membawa 还 / 也 — 另外,我也…, bukan 另外,我… telanjang.

    再说 — "selain itu, apalagi"

    English

再说 piles on an extra, often clinching reason to back a decision — "besides, what's more, anyway." It's the "and another thing…" that seals the argument.

    Structure: …… ,再说 ……

Don't buy it — anyway, you don't need it.

Remember: 再说 = "and what's MORE…" — it adds a reason that clinches what you just said. Don't confuse it with the 再说 in 先…再说 ("do X first, deal with it later").

    Watch out

    • It reinforces a decision — it adds backing, not just a neutral extra fact.
    Bahasa Indonesia

再说 menambahkan alasan tambahan, seringkali menyudahi, untuk mendukung suatu keputusan — "selain itu, apalagi." Ini adalah "dan ada lagi…" yang mengunci argumen.

    Struktur: …… ,再说 ……

Jangan beli — anyway, kamu tidak membutuhkannya.

Ingat: 再说 = "dan apa LAGI…" — ini menambahkan alasan yang menyudahi apa yang baru saja Anda katakan. Jangan bingung dengan 再说 dalam 先…再说 ("lakukan X dulu, urus nanti").

    Hati-hati

    • Ini memperkuat keputusan — ia memberikan dukungan, bukan sekadar fakta tambahan netral.

    可是 / 但是 — "tetapi"

    English

可是 and 但是 are the bread-and-butter words for "but." 但是 is a shade more formal and emphatic; 可是 a touch softer. Otherwise they swap freely, and both happily follow 虽然 ("although").

Structure: Statement ,可是 / 但是 + Contrary Statement

    I我wǒlike喜欢xǐ huanhim他tābut,可是kě shìhe他tādoesn't不bùlike喜欢xǐ huanme我wǒ。

Remember: 但是 = firmer/formal, 可是 = softer/casual — twins otherwise. Both pair with 虽然 (虽然…但是…), and Chinese happily keeps both halves, unlike English ("Although… but…" is fine in Chinese).

    Watch out

    • Don't drop the 但是 after 虽然 — Chinese likes the matching pair where English uses only one.
    Bahasa Indonesia

可是 dan 但是 adalah kata dasar untuk "tetapi." 但是 sedikit lebih formal dan tegas; 可是 sedikit lebih lembut. Selain itu, keduanya dapat digunakan secara bebas, dan keduanya dengan senang hati mengikuti 虽然 ("meskipun").

Struktur: Statement ,可是 / 但是 + Contrary Statement

    Hati-hati

    知道 … 疑问词 … 吗? — menyelipkan pertanyaan di dalam pertanyaan 吗

    English

Here's a structure that looks like two questions but is really one. 吗 can close a clause that embeds a question word — "do you know who / what / where …?" The front carries a verb of knowing (知道, 了解, 认识), and the whole thing stays a plain yes/no question.

    Structure: Confirmation (知道 …) + embedded Question + 吗?

    you你nǐknow知道zhī dàohe他tāis是shìwho谁shéi吗ma?

Do you know who he is?

    she她tādid say说过shuō guoshe她tālives住zhù在zàiwhere哪儿nǎr吗ma?

Did she say where she lives?

Remember: the 吗 makes it yes/no; the 谁 / 哪儿 inside is just part of the embedded clause. "Do you know [who he is]?" — you're asking whether they know, not "who?". Answer 知道 / 不知道.

    Watch out

    • The lead verb is one of knowing/saying: 知道, 了解, 明白, 认识, 说过.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Berikut struktur yang terlihat seperti dua pertanyaan tetapi sebenarnya satu. 吗 dapat menutup klausa yang menyelipkan kata tanya — "apakah kamu tahu siapa / apa / di mana …?" Bagian depan membawa kata kerja mengetahui (知道, 了解, 认识), dan keseluruhan hal tetap berupa pertanyaan yes/no biasa.

    Struktur: Confirmation (知道 …) + embedded Question + 吗?

    you你nǐknow知道zhī dàohe他tāis是shìwho谁shéi吗ma?

    Apakah kamu tahu siapa dia?

    she她tādid say说过shuō guoshe她tālives住zhù在zàiwhere哪儿nǎr吗ma?

Apakah dia mengatakan di mana dia tinggal?

Ingat: 吗 menjadikannya yes/no; 谁 / 哪儿 di dalamnya hanyalah bagian dari klausa terselip. "Apakah kamu tahu [siapa dia]?" — Anda bertanya apakah mereka tahu, bukan "siapa?". Jawab 知道 / 不知道.

    Hati-hati

    • Kata kerja utama adalah salah satu dari mengetahui/mengatakan: 知道, 了解, 明白, 认识, 说过.

    … 吧 ,…… ;… 吧 ,…… — menimbang dua opsi

    English

Echo 吧 across two options and you lay out a dilemma — "if A …, but if B …." It has an indecisive, no-win ring, and the two options are usually both unappealing.

    Structure: Option 1 + 吧,…… ;Option 2 + 吧,……

    in winter冬天dōng tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàicold冷lěngin summer;夏天xià tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàihot热rè。

Go in winter and it's too cold; go in summer and it's too hot.

not不bùtell him说shuō吧bahe,他tāwill会huìget it wrong做错zuò cuòtell him;说shuō吧bahe,他tāwon't不bùbe happy高兴gāo xìng。

If I don't tell him he'll get it wrong; if I do, he'll be upset.

Remember: doubled 吧 = a no-win fork — "do A 吧, downside; do B 吧, downside." Picture a shrug at each branch: whichever you pick, it stings.

    Watch out

    • Both options should carry a drawback — that's what gives the pattern its trapped, can't-win feel.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Gema 吧 melintasi dua opsi dan Anda menggambarkan dilema — "jika A …, tetapi jika B …." Memiliki nada tidak pasti, tanpa menang, dan kedua opsi biasanya sama-sama tidak menarik.

    Struktur: Option 1 + 吧,…… ;Option 2 + 吧,……

    in winter冬天dōng tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàicold冷lěngin summer;夏天xià tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàihot热rè。

Pergi di musim dingin dan terlalu dingin; pergi di musim panas dan terlalu panas.

not不bùtell him说shuō吧bahe,他tāwill会huìget it wrong做错zuò cuòtell him;说shuō吧bahe,他tāwon't不bùbe happy高兴gāo xìng。

Jika saya tidak mengatakannya, dia akan salah; jika saya bilang, dia akan kesal.

Ingat: 双重复 吧 = percabangan tanpa menang — "lakukan A 吧, sisi buruk; lakukan B 吧, sisi buruk." Bayangkan mengacungkan bahu di setiap cabang: pilih yang mana pun, itu menyakitkan.

    Hati-hati

    • Kedua opsi harus membawa kerugian — itulah yang memberikan pola perasaian, rasa tak bisa menang.

    …… 的 — partikel modal 的

    English

A sentence-final 的 can add a tone of certainty or reassurance — "(it) definitely (is / will be)." It often rides with 会 or 一定会, sealing a promise or a confident prediction.

    Structure: Statement (+ 会 …) + 的

    I我wǒwon't不bù会huìlie to骗piànyou你nǐ的de。

I would never lie to you.

    you你们nǐ menwill会huìsucceed成功chéng gōng的de。

    You will succeed.

Remember: this 的 = a spoken full stop of conviction — "trust me, it's so." It's not the possessive 的. It loves a 会 / 一定会 ahead of it: 会成功的 ("you will make it").

    Watch out

    • Don't read this 的 as "of / 's" — here it carries tone, not ownership.
    Bahasa Indonesia

的 akhir kalimat dapat menambah nuansa keyakinan atau ketenangan — "(itu) pasti (adalah / akan)." Sering acompani 会 atau 一定会, mengunci janji atau prediksi yang percaya diri.

    Struktur: Statement (+ 会 …) + 的

Saya tidak akan pernah berbohong padamu.

    you你们nǐ menwill会huìsucceed成功chéng gōng的de。

    Kamu akan berhasil.

Ingat: 的 = tanda baca lisan yang penuh keyakinan — "percaya padaku, memang begitu." Ini bukan 的 kepemilikan. Ia menyukai 会 / 一定会 di depannya: 会成功的 ("kamu akan berhasil").

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan baca 的 ini sebagai "of / 's" — di sini ia membawa nada, bukan kepemilikan.

    并 + 不 / 没 — penyangkalan tegas

并 in front of a negative pushes back against an expectation — "(it's) actually not, contrary to what you'd think." Because it counters an assumption, it's the go-to for disagreeing or correcting. It only pairs with 不 or 没.

Remember: 并不 / 并没 = "actually NOT — despite what you assume." Use it whenever you're correcting a wrong impression: "you think it's easy? 并不." It's a firm, slightly defensive negative.

    Watch out

    • It only attaches to 不 or 没 (并不, 并没) — never to a bare verb on its own.
    Bahasa Indonesia

    Watch out

    • 让 covers both "make" and "let" — context decides which.

Kata kerja kausalatif ini menempatkan seseorang di antara kata kerja dan apa yang mereka akhirnya lakukan — "membuat / biarkan / minta / menyebabkan seseorang ...." Ingat: 通过 = "melewati" — melalui ujian/tempat (kata kerja: 通过考试) atau melalui metode/penengah (kata depan: 通过朋友 "lewat teman"). Bandingkan 经过, yang lebih menekankan "setelah proses.",

    Hati-hati

    • Sebagai kata depan ia menempatkan sarana sebelum klausa utama: 通过努力,他成功了.

    来自 — "berasal dari"

    English

来自 is one compact verb for a source or origin — "come / originate from." It's more formal than 从 … 来, perfect for introductions, and it stretches to abstract sources too.

Structure: Subject + 来自 + Place / Source

    I我wǒcome from来自lái zìChina中国Zhōng guó。

    I'm from China.

my我wǒ的dethis这个zhè geidea想法xiǎng fǎcomes from来自lái zìeveryday life生活shēng huó。

This idea of mine comes from everyday life.

Remember: 来自 = "comes from" in one tidy word (来 "come" + 自 "from"). Great for intros (我来自…) and abstract origins (灵感来自…, "inspiration comes from…"). Casual version: 从…来.

    Watch out

    • It takes its source directly, with no 从: 来自中国 ✓, not 从来自中国.
    Bahasa Indonesia

来自 adalah satu kata kerja padat untuk sumber atau asal-usul — "datang / berasal dari." Ini lebih formal daripada 从 … 来, sempurna untuk perkenalan, dan meluas ke sumber abstrak juga.

Struktur: Subject + 来自 + Place / Source

    I我wǒcome from来自lái zìChina中国Zhōng guó。

    Saya berasal dari Tiongkok.

my我wǒ的dethis这个zhè geidea想法xiǎng fǎcomes from来自lái zìeveryday life生活shēng huó。

Gagasan saya ini berasal dari kehidupan sehari-hari.

Ingat: 来自 = "berasal dari" dalam satu kata rapi (来 "datang" + 自 "dari"). Bagus untuk perkenalan (我来自…) dan asal-usul abstrak (灵感来自…, "inspirasi berasal dari…"). Versi kasual: 从…来.

    Hati-hati

    • Ia mengambil sumbernya langsung, tanpa 从: 来自中国 ✓, bukan 从来自中国.

    来 — kata kerja "palsu"

    English

A bare 来 can stand in for a more specific verb — "(let me) do it, your turn, have a go" — when the real action is obvious from context. It's a short phrase ending in 来 (sometimes 吧), usually with 我 or 你.

    Structure: (让 +) Subject + 来 (+ 吧)

    I我wǒdo it来lái吧ba。

    Let me do it.

    you你nǐwrite写xiě得denicely好看hǎo kànyou,你nǐdo it来lái吧ba。

You write nicely — you do it.

Remember: this 来 does NOT mean "come" — it's a placeholder for the obvious verb, like English "I'll get this." 我来 ("I'll do it"), 你来 ("your turn"), 让他自己来 ("let him have a go").

    Watch out

    • Only use it when the real action is clear from context — otherwise name the verb.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Kata 来 yang telanjang dapat menggantikan kata kerja yang lebih spesifik — "(biarkan saya) lakukan, giliranmu, coba" — ketika aksi sebenarnya jelas dari konteks. Ini adalah frasa pendek berakhiran 来 (kadang-kadang 吧), biasanya dengan 我 atau 你.

    Struktur: (让 +) Subject + 来 (+ 吧)

    I我wǒdo it来lái吧ba。

    Biarkan saya yang kerjakan.

    you你nǐwrite写xiě得denicely好看hǎo kànyou,你nǐdo it来lái吧ba。

Tulismu bagus — kamu yang kerjakan.

Ingat: 来 ini TIDAK BERARTI "datang" — ini adalah penampung untuk kata kerja yang sudah jelas, seperti bahasa Inggris "I'll get this." 我来 ("Saya yang kerjakan"), 你来 ("giliranmu"), 让他自己来 ("biarkan dia mencoba sendiri").

    Hati-hati

    • Gunakan hanya jika aksi sebenarnya jelas dari konteks — jika tidak, sebutkan kata kerjanya.

不用 — "tidak perlu, tak ada gunanya"

    English

不用 means "(there's) no need to, don't have to" — it lifts an obligation. The classic trap: the negative of 要 ("need to") is 不用, not 不要 (which means "don't / don't want").

Structure: Subject + 不用 + Verb Phrase

    no need to不用bú yòngworry担心dān xīn。

    No need to worry.

children孩子hái zidon't need to不用bú yòngbuy买mǎia ticket票piào。

Children don't need to buy a ticket.

Remember: 要 ("need to") → 不用 ("needn't"), NOT 不要. 不用 cancels a need; 不要 is a prohibition ("don't"); 不能 = "can't"; 不应该 = "shouldn't." Pick by which one you're denying.

    Watch out

    • 不用谢 ("you're welcome") is literally "no need to thank" — the same 不用.
    Bahasa Indonesia

不用 berarti "(tidak) perlu, tidak harus" — ia menghapus kewajiban. Perangkap klasik: negatif dari 要 ("perlu") adalah 不用, bukan 不要 (yang berarti "jangan / tidak mau").

Struktur: Subject + 不用 + Verb Phrase

    no need to不用bú yòngworry担心dān xīn。

    Tidak perlu khawatir.

children孩子hái zidon't need to不用bú yòngbuy买mǎia ticket票piào。

    Anak-anak tidak perlu membeli tiket.

Ingat: 要 ("perlu") → 不用 ("tak perlu"), BUKAN 不要. 不用 membatalkan kebutuhan; 不要 adalah larangan ("jangan"); 不能 = "tidak bisa"; 不应该 = "seharusnya tidak." Pilihlah berdasarkan mana yang kamu bantah.

    Hati-hati

    • 不用谢 ("terima kasih") secara harfiah berarti "tidak perlu berterima kasih" — menggunakan 不用 yang sama.
    13.2

    得 + 动词 — "harus, wajib"

    English

The auxiliary 得 — read děi here — is a blunt, spoken "have to, must," a practical necessity.

    Structure: Subject + 得 + Verb Phrase

    we我们wǒ menhave to得děigo走zǒu了le。

    We have to go now.

the time时间shí jiāngetting late不早bù zǎo了leI,我wǒhave to得děigo home回家huí jiā了le。

It's getting late — I have to head home.

Remember: 得 = děi = "gotta." Its negative borrows 不用 ("needn't"), not 不得. And mind the reading: this is děi ("must"), a world away from the de of complements (跑得快) or the particles 的 / 地.

    Watch out

    • One character, three readings: děi (must), de (complement marker), dé (得到 "obtain"). Context picks it.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Bantuan 得 — bacalah děi di sini — adalah "harus, wajib" yang tegas dan lisan, sebuah kebutuhan praktis.

    Struktur: Subject + 得 + Verb Phrase

    we我们wǒ menhave to得děigo走zǒu了le。

    Kita harus pergi sekarang.

the time时间shí jiāngetting late不早bù zǎo了leI,我wǒhave to得děigo home回家huí jiā了le。

Sudah mulai malam — saya harus pulang.

Ingat: 得 = děi = "harus." Negatifnya meminjam 不用 ("tak perlu"), bukan 不得. Dan perhatikan pengucapannya: ini adalah děi ("harus"), sangat berbeda dari de pada pelengkap (跑得快) atau partikel 的 / 地.

    Hati-hati

    • Satu karakter, tiga pengucapan: děi (harus), de (tanda pelengkap), dé (得到 "mendapatkan"). Konteks memilihnya.

    并 + 动词 — "dan (juga)"

    English

Between two verb phrases, 并 links them as "and, and also." It's picky: it joins verbs or clauses (never nouns — that's 和's job), usually two-syllable verbs, with a considered, written ring.

    Structure: Verb Phrase 1 + 并 + Verb Phrase 2

    I我wǒagree with同意tóng yìand并bìngsupport支持zhī chíyour你nǐ的dedecision决定jué dìng。

I agree with and support your decision.

the meeting会议huì yìdiscussed讨论tǎo lùnand并bìngapproved通过tōng guò了lethe plan计划jì huà。

The meeting discussed and approved the plan.

Remember: 并 joins verbs/clauses, 和 joins nouns. "Discussed 并 approved" (verbs) ✓; "tea 和 coffee" (nouns) ✓. 并 is the formal "and" for actions.

    Watch out

    • Don't use 并 between nouns — 茶并咖啡 ✗.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Antara dua frasa kata kerja, 并 menghubungkannya sebagai "dan, dan juga." Ia pilih-pilih: ia menggabungkan kata kerja atau klausa (selalu bukan kata benda — itu tugas 和), biasanya kata kerja dua suku kata, dengan nada yang dipikirkan dan tertulis.

    Struktur: Verb Phrase 1 + 并 + Verb Phrase 2

    I我wǒagree with同意tóng yìand并bìngsupport支持zhī chíyour你nǐ的dedecision决定jué dìng。

    Saya setuju dan mendukung keputusanmu.

the meeting会议huì yìdiscussed讨论tǎo lùnand并bìngapproved通过tōng guò了lethe plan计划jì huà。

Rapat mendiskusikan dan menyetujui rencana tersebut.

Ingat: 并 menghubungkan kata kerja/klausa, 和 menghubungkan kata benda. "Mendiskusikan 并 menyetujui" (kata kerja) ✓; "teh 和 kopi" (kata benda) ✓. 并 adalah "dan" formal untuk tindakan.

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan gunakan 并 antara kata benda — 茶并咖啡 .
    14.2

    少 + 动词 — "lakukan … lebih sedikit"

    English

少 before a verb means do less of it — the staple of advice and gentle scolding. The bit that flips for English speakers: 少 comes before the verb, where English puts "less" after.

    Structure: 少 + Verb (+ Object)

    please请qǐngless少shǎoadd放fànga bit of点diǎnsalt盐yán。

Use a bit less salt, please.

    less少shǎotalk说shuōnonsense废话fèi huà!

    Quit the babbling!

Remember: 少 / 多 go BEFORE the verb — 少喝水 ("drink less water"), the reverse of English order. It softens a blunt "don't": 少管闲事 ("mind your own business," lit. "meddle less").

    Watch out

    • Never 喝少水 — the amount-word leads: 少喝水, 多吃饭.
    Bahasa Indonesia

少 sebelum kata kerja berarti lakukan lebih sedikit darinya — merupakan nasihat dan teguran lembut yang umum. Bagian yang membingungkan bagi penutur bahasa Inggris: 少 datang sebelum kata kerja, di mana bahasa Inggris meletakkan "less" setelahnya.

    Struktur: 少 + Verb (+ Object)

    please请qǐngless少shǎoadd放fànga bit of点diǎnsalt盐yán。

    Gunakan sedikit garam, tolong.

    less少shǎotalk说shuōnonsense废话fèi huà!

    Berhenti omong kosong!

Ingat: 少 /多 datang SEBELUM kata kerja — 少喝水 ("minum air lebih sedikit"), kebalikan dari urutan bahasa Inggris. Ini melembutkan "jangan" yang tegas: 少管闲事 ("urus urusanku saja," harf. "campur tangan lebih sedikit").

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan pernah 喝少水 — kata jumlah mendahului: 少喝水, 多吃饭.
    14.3

    多 + 动词 — "lakukan … lebih banyak"

    English

多 before a verb means do more of it. Like its twin 少, it sits before the verb — exactly where English puts "more" after ("eat more" → 多吃).

    Structure: 多 + Verb (+ Object)

    more多duōeat吃chīa bit点diǎn。

    Eat a bit more.

grandpa爷爷yé yeyou,你nǐshould要yàomore多duōgo out出去chū qùfor walks走走zǒu zou。

Grandpa, you should go out for walks more.

Remember: "eat more" flips to "more-eat" (多吃). 多 and 少 both lead the verb — that front position is the whole trick, and it's the opposite of English.

    Watch out

    • It's the mirror of 少 — both are everyday advice words (多喝水, 少熬夜).
    Bahasa Indonesia

多 sebelum kata kerja berarti lakukan lebih banyak darinya. Seperti kembarannya 少, ia diletakkan sebelum kata kerja — tepat di mana bahasa Inggris meletakkan "more" setelahnya ("makan lebih banyak" → 多吃).

    Struktur: 多 + Verb (+ Object)

    more多duōeat吃chīa bit点diǎn。

    Makanlah sedikit lebih banyak.

grandpa爷爷yé yeyou,你nǐshould要yàomore多duōgo out出去chū qùfor walks走走zǒu zou。

Kakek, kamu seharusnya keluar jalan-jalan lebih sering.

Ingat: "makan lebih banyak" dibalik menjadi "lebih-banyak-makan" (多吃). 多 dan 少 keduanya mendahului kata kerja — posisi depan inilah seluruh triknya, dan ini kebalikan dari bahasa Inggris.

    Hati-hati

    • Ini adalah cermin dari 少 — keduanya adalah kata nasihat sehari-hari (多喝水, 少熬夜).

由 + Orang + Kata Kerja — menamai siapa yang melakukannya

    English

由 spotlights who is responsible for an action — "(it's) for X to do, handled by X." It's at home in formal and business contexts.

    Structure: Topic + 由 + Person + Verb

Remember: 由 X = "it's X's to handle." It assigns the doer or the responsibility — 这事由我负责 ("I'll take care of it"), 由你做主 ("it's your call"). Formal in tone.

    Watch out

    • Don't confuse it with the passive 被 — 由 assigns responsibility, not "suffered by."
    Bahasa Indonesia

由 menyoroti siapa yang bertanggung jawab atas suatu tindakan — "(ini) untuk X melakukan, ditangani oleh X." Cocok digunakan dalam konteks formal dan bisnis.

    Struktur: Topic + 由 + Person + Verb

Ingat: 由 X = "tangan X" / "X yang menangani." Ini menunjuk pada pelaku atau tanggung jawab — 这事由我负责 ("Saya akan mengurusnya"), 由你做主 ("tergantung keputusanmu"). Nada formal.

    English

并且 joins verb phrases or clauses — "and, moreover." Plain, it just means "and" (like 并); with 也 / 还 it means "moreover," pushing the first idea a step further.

    从来 + 不 / 没 — "tidak pernah"

    English

从来 with a negative means "never" — and the choice of negative matters. 从来 + 不 = "never (as a rule, by habit)"; 从来 + 没(有) + Verb + 过 = "have never (done it in my life)." In speech both shorten to 从.

    Structure: Subject + 从来 + 不 + VP · Subject + 从来 + 没(有) + Verb + 过

    Watch out

    • Don't drop the 过 in the experience version: 从来没见过 ✓, not 从来没见.
    Bahasa Indonesia

从来 dengan negatif berarti "tidak pernah" — dan pemilihan negatifnya penting. 从来 + 不 = "tidak pernah (sebagai aturan, kebiasaan)"; 从来 + 没(有) + Kata Kerja + 过 = "belum pernah (melakukannya seumur hidup)." Dalam percakapan keduanya dipersingkat menjadi 从.

    Struktur: Subject + 从来 + 不 + VP · Subject + 从来 + 没(有) + Verb + 过

    Watch out

    • Follow 值得 with a verb, not a price — for price, use 值.
    Bahasa Indonesia

值得 menyatakan bahwa suatu tindakan layak dilakukan — posisinya sebelum kata kerja. Jauhkan dari uang: 值得是关于 apakah melakukan sesuatu memberikan hasil; untuk nilai uang Anda butuh 值 polos.

    Kata Kerja + 到 + Waktu — "(lakukan) sampai"

    English

到 after a verb, plus a time or event, works like "until." It often takes 一直 to stress the unbroken stretch. The structural catch: when the verb has an object, you repeat the verb.

    Structure: (一直 +) Verb + 到 + Time / Event · Verb + Obj + Verb + 到 + Time

we我们wǒ menat在zàithe bar酒吧jiǔ bāright一直yì zhíchatted聊liáountil到dàomidnight半夜bàn yè。

Remember: with an object, repeat the verb: 写作业写到十二点 (do-homework, do-until-12). A bare 写作业到… is wrong. 一直…到 underlines that the action ran the whole way to that point.

    Watch out

    • The repeated-verb rule trips everyone — say the verb once for the object, once for the 到 + time.
    Bahasa Indonesia

到 setelah kata kerja, ditambah waktu atau peristiwa, berfungsi seperti "sampai." Sering menggunakan 一直 untuk menekankan rentang yang tak terputus. Penjebakan struktural: ketika kata kerja memiliki objek, Anda mengulang kata kerjanya.

    Struktur: (一直 +) Verb + 到 + Time / Event · Verb + Obj + Verb + 到 + Time

Ingat: dengan objek, ulangi kata kerja: 写作业写到十二点 (mengerjakan-PR, mengerjakan-sampai-pukul-12). 写作业到… polos adalah salah. 一直…到 menyoroti bahwa tindakan berjalan seluruh jalan ke titik tersebut.

    Hati-hati

害得 — "menyebabkan (masalah), membuat (buruk)"

    English

害得 (or just 害) pins the blame on something for a bad outcome — "(it) caused / led to (something bad) for me." There's always a note of complaint, and the cause comes before 害得.

Structure: Reason ,害(得) + Undesirable Situation

Remember: 害 = "harm," so 害得 always blames — "…which (annoyingly) made me…." Reserve it for bad results; the 得 can drop (害我迟到了).

    Watch out

    • Never use it for a good outcome — for a neutral "make/cause," use 让 / 使.
    Bahasa Indonesia

害得 (atau sekadar 害) menuding sesuatu sebagai penyebab hasil buruk — "(itu) menyebabkan / berujung pada (sesuatu yang buruk) bagiku." Selalu ada nada keluhan, dan penyebabnya datang sebelum 害得.

Ingat: 害 = "merugikan," jadi 害et selalu menuding — "…yang (secara menyebalkan) membuatku…." Gunakan untuk hasil buruk; 得 bisa dilepas (害我迟到了).

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan gunakan untuk hasil baik — untuk netral "membuat/menyebabkan," gunakan 让 / 使.

Kata Kerja Terpisah — kata kerja-objek yang dapat dipisahkan

    English

A surprising number of "verbs" are secretly verb + object pairs — 见面 ("meet" = see-face), 睡觉 ("sleep" = sleep-a-sleep), 帮忙 ("help" = do-a-favour), 结婚 ("marry" = tie-marriage). Other words slot between the two halves, and you can't add another object after the whole word.

Structure: Verb + (insert) + Object

    We've met before.

    he他tādid帮bāng了leme我wǒa一个yí gefavour忙máng。

Remember: a separable word is verb + its own object stuck together (见+面). Inserts (了 / 过 / a number-phrase) go between the halves — 睡了一觉, 结过婚 — and you can't bolt a new object on the end: 跟你见面 ✓, never 见面你.

    Watch out

    • This is the classic error: 我想见面你 ✗ → 我想跟你见面 ✓. The "object" slot is already taken by 面.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Jumlah kata "kata kerja" yang mengejutkan sebenarnya adalah pasangan kata kerja + objek — 见面 ("bertemu" = lihat-wajah), 睡觉 ("tidur" = tidur-tidur), 帮忙 ("membantu" = lakukan-bantuan), 结婚 ("menikah" = ikat-pernikahan). Kata lain masuk di antara kedua bagian, dan Anda tidak bisa menambahkan objek baru setelah kata utuh tersebut.

Struktur: Verb + (insert) + Object

    we我们wǒ menhave met见jiàn过guo面miàn。

    Kami sudah bertemu sebelumnya.

    he他tādid帮bāng了leme我wǒa一个yí gefavour忙máng。

Ingat: kata yang dapat dipisahkan adalah kata kerja + objeknya sendiri yang melekat (见+面). Sisipan (了 / 过 / frasa angka) masuk di antara kedua bagian — 睡了一觉, 结过婚 — dan Anda tidak bisa menempelkan objek baru di ujung: 跟你见面 ✓, jangan pernah 见面你.

    Hati-hati

    • Ini adalah kesalahan klasik: 我想见面你 ✗ → 我想跟你见面 ✓. Slot "objek" sudah ditempati oleh 面.

Dia makan apa saja — bahkan daging anjing.

Ingat: 连 X 都 = "bahkan X" — dan Anda PERLU KEDUA kata tersebut. Bahasa Inggris hanya menyimpan "even"; bahasa China membingkaikan sebagai 连 (item yang mengejutkan) … 都 (menyeluruhkannya). Item tersebut melompat ke depan: 连狗肉都吃, jangan 吃连狗肉.

    Hati-hati

    • Melepaskan 都 akan merusaknya — 连 selalu membutuhkan pasangan 都 / 也-nya.

    疑问词 + 都 — "semua / apapun"

    English

A question word + 都 sweeps over all cases — "everyone, anything, anywhere, whenever." Add 不 / 没 and it flips to the total negative: "none, nothing, nowhere."

    Structure: Question Word + 都 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéi都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    Everyone loves good food.

    I我wǒanywhere哪儿nǎr都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto go去qù。

I don't want to go anywhere.

Remember: question word + 都 = "all / every"; + 不 / 没 = "none / nothing." 谁都 (everyone), 什么都 (everything), 哪儿都 (everywhere), 怎么都 (no matter how) — then a 不 / 没 turns each into its negative (什么都不知道).

    Watch out

    • The question word here is the indefinite "any," not a real question — no question mark.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Kata tanya + 都 mencakup semua kasus — "semua orang, segala sesuatu, kemana-mana, kapanpun." Tambahkan 不 / 没 dan itu berubah menjadi negatif total: "tidak ada, tidak ada apa-apa, tidak ada di mana-mana."

    everyone谁shéi都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    Semua orang menyukai makanan enak.

Saya tidak ingin pergi ke mana-mana.

Ingat: kata tanya + 都 = "semua / setiap"; + 不 / 没 = "tidak ada / tidak apa-apa." 谁都 (semua orang), 什么都 (segala sesuatu), 哪儿都 (setempat), 怎么都 (sebagaimana pun) — lalu menambahkan 不 / 没 mengubahnya menjadi bentuk negatif (什么都不知道).

    Hati-hati

    • Kata tanya di sini adalah kata tak tentu "any", bukan pertanyaan sungguhan — tanpa tanda tanya.

    A + 是 + B + 的 + Number + 倍 — "N kali lipat"

    English

倍 counts multiples — "A 是 B 的 N 倍" = "A is N times B." Watch the maths: N倍 is the total, ×N — 三倍 is "three times (as much)," not "three times more."

    Structure: A + 是 + B + 的 + Number + 倍

his他tānow现在xiàn zài的desalary工资gōng zīis是shìtwo years ago两年前liǎng nián qián的dethree times三倍sān bèi。

Remember: N倍 = the TOTAL (×N), not "N times more." 三倍 = 3×, 两倍 = 2× (twice). The 是 … 的 frame brackets the two things compared.

    Watch out

    • 增加了三倍 ("increased threefold") is read ambiguously in real life — be careful with it in maths contexts.
    Bahasa Indonesia

倍 menghitung kelipatan — "A 是 B 的 N 倍" = "A adalah N kali lipat dari B." Perhatikan matematikanya: N倍 adalah total, ×N — 三倍 berarti "tiga kali lipat," bukan "tiga kali lebih banyak."

    Struktur: A + 是 + B + 的 + Number + 倍

    一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 … — "sama sekali tidak …"

    English

    一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 is the emphatic, absolute negative — "not (even) … at all, not one bit."

    Structure: Subject + 一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Adjective / Verb

    you你nǐat all一点yì diǎn也yěnot不bùfat胖pàng。

    You're not fat at all.

    I我wǒat all一点yì diǎn都dōudidn't没méiunderstand听懂tīng dǒng。

    I didn't understand a single bit.

Remember: it's the 也 / 都 sitting between 一点 and 不 / 没 that makes it absolute — "not even the smallest bit." A bare 一点不 / 一点没 (no 也/都) is noticeably weaker.

    Watch out

    • Keep all the pieces: 一点 + 也/都 + 不/没 — drop the 也/都 and the "at all" force fades.
    Bahasa Indonesia

    一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 adalah penyangkalan tegas dan mutlak — "tidak (bahkan) … sama sekali, tidak sedikit pun."

    Struktur: Subject + 一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Adjective / Verb

    you你nǐat all一点yì diǎn也yěnot不bùfat胖pàng。

    Kamu tidak gemuk sama sekali.

    I我wǒat all一点yì diǎn都dōudidn't没méiunderstand听懂tīng dǒng。

    Saya tidak mengerti sedikit pun.

Ingat: yang membuatnya mutlak adalah 也 / 都 yang berada di antara 一点 dan 不 / 没 — "tidak bahkan sedikit pun." 一点不 / 一点没 tanpa 也/都 terasa jauh lebih lemah.

    Hati-hati

    • Pertahankan semua bagian: 一点 + 也/都 + 不/没 — jika Anda menghilangkan 也/都, maka kekuatan "sama sekali" akan memudar.

不知道 … 好 — "tidak yakin mana yang terbaik"

    English

End a clause with 好 after 不知道 and you get "(I) don't know what would be best" — that stuck, can't-decide feeling. It's often 才好.

Not sure what gift would be best.

Remember: the trailing 好 = "…would be best" — 不知道怎么办才好 ("don't know what on earth to do for the best"). The 才 sharpens the dilemma.

    Watch out

    • The 好 sits at the very end, after the question phrase — it's "what's best," not "good."
    Bahasa Indonesia

Ingat: 好 yang menggantung di akhir = "…sebaiknya" — 不知道怎么办才好 ("tidak tahu harus berbuat apa untuk yang terbaik"). 才 mempertajam dilema tersebut.

    Hati-hati

    • 好 diletakkan di posisi paling akhir, setelah frasa tanya — artinya "mana yang terbaik," bukan "bagus."

    一 … 就 … — "segera setelah"

    English

一 A 就 B binds two events tight — "as soon as A, (then) B," with B following A at once or automatically. It doubles as "whenever A, B" for a habitual link.

    Structure: Subject + 一 + Event 1 ,就 + Event 2

    Watch out

    • Don't read this 一 as "one" — it's the "the instant…" trigger, paired with 就.
    Bahasa Indonesia

    Watch out

常常 vs 往往 — "often" dengan dua cara

    English

常常 is plain "often" — a frequency, and it can describe future plans. 往往 is "tend(s) to / as a rule" — a pattern or tendency under certain conditions, and it can't describe a future intention.

    he他tāoften常常cháng chángarrives late迟到chí dào。

    He often arrives late.

    Watch out

    • 常常 can shorten to 常 (常去); 往往 can't drop a 往.
    Bahasa Indonesia

常常 adalah "sering" murni — frekuensi, dan dapat menggambarkan rencana di masa depan. 往往 adalah "cenderung / secara umum" — pola atau kecenderungan dalam kondisi tertentu, dan tidak dapat menggambarkan niat di masa depan.

刚 vs 刚才 — kata keterangan vs kata waktu

Where did you go just now?

Remember: 刚 = adverb, glued to the verb (刚到, often no 了); 刚才 = noun, a point in the recent past (stands alone, takes 了, modifies nouns: 刚才的事). Before an adjective, only 刚 / 刚刚 works (天刚晴, "the sky just cleared").

    Watch out

    • 刚才 is a time word — 刚才的事 ("the thing just now") works, but 刚的事 doesn't.
    Bahasa Indonesia

刚 adalah kata keterangan ("baru saja," tepat sebelum kata kerja); 刚才 adalah kata benda waktu ("beberapa menit lalu," dalam beberapa menit terakhir) yang dapat berdiri sendiri dan bahkan memodifikasi kata benda.

    from从cóngtomorrow明天míng tiānon开始kāi shǐI,我wǒwon't不bùsmoke抽烟chōu yān了le。

Starting from tomorrow, I'm quitting smoking.

    my home我家wǒ jiāfrom离líthe office公司gōng sīvery很hěnclose近jìn。

My home is very close to the office.

Remember: 离 = the GAP ("how far apart," pairs with 远 / 近); 从 = the START ("where it begins"). 我家离公司很近 ("close to") vs 从明天开始 ("starting tomorrow"). Distance → 离; origin point → 从.

    Watch out

    • 离 needs two endpoints and a distance word (离…远/近); 从 needs a route or a start time (从…走, 从…开始).
    Bahasa Indonesia

离 mengukur celah antara dua titik — "jauh dari" (untuk jarak). 从 menandai titik awal dalam ruang atau waktu — "dari" (di mana gerakan atau waktu berawal).

    from从cóngtomorrow明天míng tiānon开始kāi shǐI,我wǒwon't不bùsmoke抽烟chōu yān了le。

Mulai dari besok, saya berhenti merokok.

    my home我家wǒ jiāfrom离líthe office公司gōng sīvery很hěnclose近jìn。

Rumah saya sangat dekat dengan kantor.

Ingat: 离 = CELAH ("seberapa jauh", berpasangan dengan 远 / 近); 从 = AWAL ("dimana dimulai"). 我家离公司很近 ("dekat") vs 从明天开始 ("mulai besok"). Jarak → 离; titik asal → 从.

    Hati-hati

    • 离 membutuhkan dua ujung dan kata jarak (离…远/近); 从 membutuhkan rute atau waktu mulai (从…走, 从…开始).

反而 vs 相反 — "malah" vs "kebalikannya"

    English

反而 is an adverb ("instead, on the contrary") that sits before the verb inside one sentence. 相反 is an adjective / conjunction meaning "(the) opposite" — it links or opens a sentence, or describes a thing as opposite.

eating吃chīfruit水果shuǐ guǒnot only不但bú dànno没méibenefit好处hǎo chuinstead,反而fǎn érhas有yǒuharm坏处huài chu

Eating fruit not only does no good — instead it does harm.

    my我wǒ的deidea想法xiǎng fǎ跟gēnhis他tāthe opposite相反xiāng fǎn。

My idea is the opposite of his.

Remember: 反而 = an ADVERB ("instead," before the verb), marking a contrary RESULT; 相反 = "the opposite" (跟…相反, or 相反,… "on the contrary,"). One does a job inside the clause; the other names or links an opposite.

    Watch out

    • You can't swap them: 反而有坏处 ✓ (adverb), 跟他相反 ✓ (adjective) — but not 跟他反而.
    Bahasa Indonesia

反而 adalah kata keterangan ("malah, sebaliknya") yang berada sebelum kata kerja dalam satu kalimat. 相反 adalah kata sifat / konjungsi yang berarti "(ke)balikan" — ia menghubungkan atau membuka kalimat, atau mendeskripsikan sesuatu sebagai kebalikan.

eating吃chīfruit水果shuǐ guǒnot only不但bú dànno没méibenefit好处hǎo chuinstead,反而fǎn érhas有yǒuharm坏处huài chu

Makan buah tidak hanya tidak bermanfaat — malah membahayakan.

    my我wǒ的deidea想法xiǎng fǎ跟gēnhis他tāthe opposite相反xiāng fǎn。

    Gagasan saya kebalikan dari dia.

Ingat: 反而 = KATA KETERANGAN ("malah," sebelum kata kerja), menandai HASIL yang bertentangan; 相反 = "kebalikan" (跟…相反, atau 相反,… "sebaliknya). Satu melakukan pekerjaan di dalam klausa; yang lain menyebut atau menghubungkan kebalikan.

    Hati-hati

    • Anda tidak bisa menukar mereka: 反而有坏处 ✓ (kata keterangan), 跟他相反 ✓ (kata sifat) — tetapi bukan 跟他反而.

肯定 vs 确定 vs 一定 — "pasti / tentu saja"

    English

Three "certainty" words, three jobs: 肯定 = "definitely / to affirm" (a confident assertion). 确定 = "be sure / confirm" — certainty you've checked. 一定 = "certainly / be sure to" — an expectation or insistence.

    you你nǐsure确定què dìnghe他tāwill会huìcome来lái吗ma?

    Are you sure he'll come?

    he他tādefinitely肯定kěn dìngwill会huìcome来lái。

    He'll definitely come.

Remember: 肯定 asserts a fact confidently; 确定 is certainty you've VERIFIED; 一定 is expectation/insistence. 一定会来 = "will surely come" (expectation); 一定要小心 = "be sure to be careful" (insistence); 你确定吗? = "are you sure (have you checked)?".

    Watch out

    • 确定 is about your own checked certainty; 肯定 asserts the fact itself.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Tiga kata "keyakinan", tiga tugas: 肯定 = "tentu / untuk mengonfirmasi" (pernyataan yang percaya diri). 确定 = "yakin / konfirmasi" — keyakinan yang telah ANDA cek. 一定 = "tentu / pasti" — sebuah ekspektasi atau penekanan.

    you你nǐsure确定què dìnghe他tāwill会huìcome来lái吗ma?

Apakah kamu yakin dia akan datang?

    he他tādefinitely肯定kěn dìngwill会huìcome来lái。

    Dia pasti akan datang.

Ingat: 肯定 menyatakan fakta dengan percaya diri; 确定 adalah keyakinan yang telah ANDA VERIFIKASI; 一定 adalah ekspektasi/penekanan. 一定会来 = "akan tentu datang" (ekspektasi); 一定要小心 = "pastilah hati-hati" (penekanan); 你确定吗? = "apakah kamu yakin (telah kamu cek)?"

    Hati-hati

    • 确定是关于 ketenanganmu sendiri yang telah dicek; 肯定 menyatakan faktanya itu sendiri.

适合 vs 合适 — "cocok" vs "sesuai"

    English

Same two characters, flipped — and the flip changes the grammar. 适合 is a verb ("to suit") and takes an object. 合适 is an adjective ("suitable") and behaves like other adjectives (很合适, 最合适的).

    this这个zhè gecolour颜色yán sèdoesn't不bùsuit适合shì héhim他tā。

    This colour doesn't suit him.

    black黑色hēi sèis才cái是shìthe most最zuìsuitable合适hé shì的de。

    Black is the most suitable.

Remember: 适合 = VERB + object (适合我, "suits me"); 合适 = ADJECTIVE (很合适, 最合适的, no object). The character order is the giveaway: 适合 takes an object, 合适 describes.

    Watch out

    • Don't give 合适 an object: 这个适合你 ✓ but 这个合适你 ✗ → 这个对你很合适 / 这个很合适.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Dua karakter yang sama, dibalik — dan pembalikan itu mengubah tata bahasa. 适合 adalah kata kerja ("cocok") dan mengambil objek. 合适 adalah kata sifat ("sesuai") dan berperilaku seperti kata sifat lainnya (很合适, 最合适的).

    this这个zhè gecolour颜色yán sèdoesn't不bùsuit适合shì héhim他tā。

    Warna ini tidak cocok dengannya.

    black黑色hēi sèis才cái是shìthe most最zuìsuitable合适hé shì的de。

    Hitam adalah yang paling sesuai.

Ingat: 适合 = KATA KERJA + objek (适合我, "cocok denganku"); 合适 = KATA SIFAT (很合适, 最合适的, tanpa objek). Urutan karakter adalah petunjuknya: 适合 mengambil objek, 合适 mendeskripsikan.

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan berikan 合适 objek: 这个适合你 ✓ tetapi 这个合适你 ✗ → 这个对你很合适 / 这个很合适.

以后 vs 的时候 — "after" vs "when / while"

    English

Both attach to a time or event, but they pin different moments. 以后 means "after (something)" — the action follows it. 的时候 means "when / while (something is happening)" — the action lands during it.

    playing打dǎbasketball篮球lán qiúwhile的时候de shí houwill会huìsweat出汗chū hàn。

    You sweat while playing basketball.

after finishing打完dǎ wánbasketball篮球lán qiúafter以后yǐ hòuneed to要yàoshower洗澡xǐ zǎo。

After finishing basketball, you need to shower.

Remember: 的时候 = DURING (when/while); 以后 = AFTER. The verb tells you which: an ongoing verb takes 的时候 (打篮球的时候), a completed one takes 以后 (打完以后) — note the result word 完 that signals "finished."

    Watch out

    • 吃饭的时候 ("while eating") vs 吃完饭以后 ("after eating") — the 完 is the tell that you've crossed into 以后 territory.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Keduanya menempel pada waktu atau peristiwa, tetapi menandai momen yang berbeda. 以后 berarti "setelah (sesuatu)" — tindakan mengikuti hal tersebut. 的时候 berarti "ketika / saat (sesuatu sedang terjadi)" — tindakan terjadi di tengah hal tersebut.

    playing打dǎbasketball篮球lán qiúwhile的时候de shí houwill会huìsweat出汗chū hàn。

    Anda berkeringat saat bermain basket.

after finishing打完dǎ wánbasketball篮球lán qiúafter以后yǐ hòuneed to要yàoshower洗澡xǐ zǎo。

Setelah selesai main basket, Anda perlu mandi.

Ingat: 的时候 = SELAMA (ketika/saat); 以后 = SETELAH. Kata kerja memberi tahu mana yang tepat: kata kerja yang sedang berlangsung menggunakan 的时候 (打篮球的时候), sedangkan yang telah selesai menggunakan 以后 (打完以后) — perhatikan kata hasil 完 yang menandakan "selesai."

    Hati-hati

    • 吃饭的时候 ("saat makan") vs 吃完饭以后 ("setelah makan") — kehadiran 完 adalah tanda bahwa Anda telah masuk ke ranah 以后.
