Adjetivo + 极了 — "…to the max" (Extremamente)

    English

When something is off the charts — the best, the worst, the most you've ever seen — tack 极了 (jíle) onto the adjective. 极 means "the furthest point, the extreme" (it's the 极 of 北极, the North Pole), so 好极了 reads literally as "good — all the way to the pole." It works for praise and complaints alike, and it lives in casual, spoken Chinese.

Unusually for a degree phrase, 极了 clamps straight onto the adjective with no 得 — and the 了 is welded on: drop it and the sentence is simply wrong.

Structure: Subject + Adjective + 极了 Literally: "[subject is] adjective — to the extreme."

    this这个zhè geidea主意zhǔ yigood好hǎoextremely极了jí le。

    This idea is perfect.

the college exam高考gāo kǎothat day那天nà tiānI,我wǒnervous紧张jǐn zhāngextremely极了jí le。

I was incredibly nervous on the day of the gaokao.

    that那个nà geboy男孩nán háiannoying讨厌tǎo yànextremely极了jí le!

    That boy is unbelievably annoying!

Remember: 极 = pole, the furthest point (北极 = North Pole). 好极了 pushes "good" all the way to the pole — and 极 never travels without its 了.

    Watch out

    • The 了 is non-negotiable: 好极了 ✓, never 好极.
    • No 得 — it attaches bare (好极了), unlike most degree complements (好得很).
    • 极了 already carries the emphasis, so don't pile on 很 or 非常: 好极了, never 很好极了.

Estrutura: Subject + Adjective + 极了 Literalmente: "[sujeito é] adjetivo — até o extremo."

    this这个zhè geidea主意zhǔ yigood好hǎoextremely极了jí le。

    Essa ideia é perfeita.

the college exam高考gāo kǎothat day那天nà tiānI,我wǒnervous紧张jǐn zhāngextremely极了jí le。

Eu estava incrivelmente nervoso no dia da gaokao.

    that那个nà geboy男孩nán háiannoying讨厌tǎo yànextremely极了jí le!

    Aquele menino é insuportavelmente irritante!

Lembre-se: 极 = polo, o ponto mais distante (北极 = Polo Norte). 好极了 empurra "bom" até o polo — e 极 nunca viaja sem seu 了.

    Cuidado

    • O 了 é obrigatório: 好极了 ✓, nunca 好极.
    • Sem 得 — ele se une nu (好极了), diferentemente da maioria dos complementos de grau (好得很).
    • 极了 já carrega ênfase, então não acumule 很 ou 非常: 好极了, nunca 很好极了.
    1.2

形容词重叠 — dobrar adjetivos para dar calor (AA / AABB)

    English

Repeat an adjective and it turns soft, warm, and vivid — less a cold fact, more a fond little picture. This doubling runs all through friendly, natural Chinese, especially for physical descriptions: colours, sizes, shapes.

A one-syllable adjective doubles as AA, usually with 的 before the noun — 大 ("big") → 大大的 ("nice and big, big and round"):

    Structure: A + A + 的 (+ Noun)

the baby宝宝bǎo bao的deeyes眼睛yǎn jīngbig and round大大的dà dà de。

The baby has big, round eyes.

tonight今晚jīn wǎn的demoon月亮yuè liàngnice and round圆圆的yuán yuán de。

The moon is lovely and round tonight.

A two-syllable adjective doubles as AABB — repeat each character, not the whole word: 高兴 → 高高兴兴, 干净 → 干干净净, 舒服 → 舒舒服服. Used as an adverb, the AABB form takes 地 before the verb:

I我wǒwant to想xiǎngcomfortably舒舒服服shū shū fú fú地delie躺tǎngon在zàithe sofa沙发上shā fā shàng。

I just want to lie comfortably on the sofa.

Remember: doubling softens and warms — 大大的眼睛 isn't a flat "big eyes," it's the affectionate "lovely big eyes" a parent would coo. AA + 的 paints a noun; AABB + 地 colours a verb.

    Watch out

    • Not every adjective doubles — 好吃, 便宜, 麻烦 are never said as 好好吃吃 / 便便宜宜. Stick to common physical descriptors until you've heard a form used for real.
    • A doubled adjective is already emphatic — never put 很 in front (很慢慢 is wrong).
    Português

Repita um adjetivo e ele fica macio, acolhedor e vívido — menos um fato frio, mais uma pequena imagem afetuosa. Essa duplicação percorre todo o chinês amigável e natural, especialmente para descrições físicas: cores, tamanhos, formas.

Um adjetivo de um sílaba dobra como AA, geralmente com 的 antes do substantivo — 大 ("grande") → 大大的 ("bem grande, grande e redondo"):

    Estrutura: A + A + 的 (+ Noun)

the baby宝宝bǎo bao的deeyes眼睛yǎn jīngbig and round大大的dà dà de。

O bebê tem olhos grandes e redondos.

tonight今晚jīn wǎn的demoon月亮yuè liàngnice and round圆圆的yuán yuán de。

A lua está lindamente redonda esta noite.

Um adjetivo de duas sílabas dobra como AABB — repita cada caractere, não a palavra toda: 高兴 → 高高兴兴, 干净 → 干干净净, 舒服 → 舒舒服服. Usado como advérbio, a forma AABB recebe 地 antes do verbo:

I我wǒwant to想xiǎngcomfortably舒舒服服shū shū fú fú地delie躺tǎngon在zàithe sofa沙发上shā fā shàng。

    English

To say how an action is done, park the particle 地 (de) after an adjective — it is Chinese's "-ly." 高兴 ("happy") → 高兴地 ("happily"); 认真 ("careful") → 认真地 ("carefully"). The adverb always sits in front of the verb.

    Structure: Adjective + 地 + Verb Literally: "happy-ly — smiled."

    he他tāhappy高兴gāo xìng地desmiled笑xiào了le。

    He smiled happily.

the teacher老师lǎo shīcareful认真rèn zhēn地deread看kàn了lemy我的wǒ deessay作文zuò wén。

The teacher read my essay carefully.

Remember: 地 = "-ly". Three de's sound identical but split the work: 的 owns a noun (我的书), 地 drives a verb (慢慢地走), 得 rates the result (跑得快). The 地 here even carries 土 "earth" on its left — picture an adverb grounding how the verb is done.

    Watch out

    • This 地 is read de, not dì — same sound as 的 and 得, different job.
    • The adverb phrase comes before the verb, never after it.
    Português

Para dizer como uma ação é feita, posicione a partícula 地 (de) após um adjetivo — é o "-ly" do chinês. 高兴 ("feliz") → 高兴地 ("alegremente"); 认真 ("atencioso") → 认真地 ("atentamente"). O advérbio sempre fica antes do verbo.

Estrutura: Adjective + 地 + Verb Literalmente: "alegremente — sorriu."

    he他tāhappy高兴gāo xìng地desmiled笑xiào了le。

    Ele sorriu alegremente.

the teacher老师lǎo shīcareful认真rèn zhēn地deread看kàn了lemy我的wǒ deessay作文zuò wén。

O professor leu meu ensaio atentamente.

Lembre-se: 地 = "-ly". Três de's soam idênticos, mas dividem tarefas: 的 pertence a um substantivo (我的书), 地 guia um verbo (慢慢地走), 得 avalia um resultado (跑得快). O 地 aqui até carrega 土 "terra" à esquerda — imagine um advérbio assentando como a ação é realizada.

    Cuidado

    • Este 地 pronuncia-se de, não dì — mesmo som que 的 e 得, função diferente.
    • A frase advérbia vem antes do verbo, nunca depois dele.

    2.1

    又 + 动词 + 了 — "(fez) de novo" (no passado)

    English

Something already happened one more time? Reach for 又 (yòu) — "again, once more." It looks backward at a repeat that's done, and it often carries a flick of annoyance, like English "again?!" (For "again" in the future, you want 再 instead — see the contrast below.)

    Structure: (Subject +) 又 + Verb + 了 Literally: "again — [verb] — (and it's happened)."

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    You're late again.

    again又yòurain下雨xià yǔ了le!

    It's raining again!

    today今天jīn tiānagain又yòuhave to要yàowork overtime加班jiā bān了le!

We've got to work overtime again today!

Remember: 又 looks back, 再 looks forward. 又来了 = "here we go again" (it happened); 再来一次 = "do it once more" (it will). Future 再 takes no 了; past 又 needs it.

    Watch out

    • 又 also works with negatives: 他又没来 ("he didn't come again").
    • For something about to repeat, pair it with 要: 又要…了 ("here it comes again").
    Português

Algo já aconteceu mais uma vez? Aponte para 又 (yòu) — "novamente, outra vez". Ele olha para trás em uma repetição concluída e muitas vezes carrega um toque de irritação, como o inglês "again?!" (Para "novamente" no futuro, use 再 — veja o contraste abaixo).

    Estrutura: (Subject +) 又 + Verb + 了 Literalmente: "de novo — [verbo] — (e aconteceu)."

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    Você está atrasado de novo.

    again又yòurain下雨xià yǔ了le!

    Está chovendo de novo!

    today今天jīn tiānagain又yòuhave to要yàowork overtime加班jiā bān了le!

Temos que trabalhar horas extras de novo hoje!

Lembre-se: 又 olha para trás, 再 olha para frente. 又来了 = "lá vem ela de novo" (aconteceu); 再来一次 = "faça de novo" (irá acontecer). 再 futuro não leva 了; 又 passado precisa dele.

    Cuidado

    • 又 também funciona com negativos: 他又没来 ("ele não veio de novo").
    • Para algo prestes a repetir, combine com 要: 又要…了 ("lá vem ela de novo").
    2.2

一直 — "o tempo todo, continuamente"

    English

一直 is literally "one straight (line)" — picture a single, unbroken line drawn through time. It describes an action or state that runs non-stop over a stretch — "continuously, the whole time, all along." English often lands it as "always."

Structure: Subject + 一直 + Predicate Literally: "in one straight line, [predicate]."

    I我wǒall along一直yì zhívery很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanyou你nǐ。

    I've liked you all along.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnalways一直yì zhívery很hěnbusy忙máng。

    The boss is always busy.

eighteen十八岁shí bā suìafter以后yǐ hòuhe,他tāhas … ever since一直yì zhíalone一个人yí ge rénlived住zhù。

Since he was eighteen, he's lived alone the whole time.

Remember: 一直 = one straight line through time — no breaks. It's unbroken duration; for a repeating habit ("always does X"), switch to 总是.

    Watch out

    • It often pairs with 在 (一直在学习) or 都 (一直都不抽烟).
    • 一直走 also means "go straight ahead" — the same "straight line" idea, in space.
    Português

一直 é literalmente "uma linha reta" — imagine uma única linha ininterrupta desenhada através do tempo. Descreve uma ação ou estado que corre sem parar por um período — "continuamente, o tempo todo, durante todo o tempo." O inglês frequentemente traduz como "always."

Estrutura: Subject + 一直 + Predicate Literalmente: "em uma linha reta, [predicado]."

    I我wǒall along一直yì zhívery很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanyou你nǐ。

    Sempre gostei de você.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnalways一直yì zhívery很hěnbusy忙máng。

    O chefe está sempre ocupado.

eighteen十八岁shí bā suìafter以后yǐ hòuhe,他tāhas … ever since一直yì zhíalone一个人yí ge rénlived住zhù。

Desde que tinha dezoito anos, ele vive sozinho o tempo todo.

Lembre-se: 一直 = uma linha reta através do tempo — sem pausas. É duração ininterrupta; para um hábito repetitivo ("sempre faz X"), mude para 总是.

    Cuidado

    • Frequentemente combina com 在 (一直在学习) ou 都 (一直都不抽烟).
    • 一直走 também significa "ir reto" — a mesma ideia de "linha reta", mas no espaço.
    2.3

    总是 — "sempre" (um hábito)

    English

总是 is "always" in the sense of a habit or consistent pattern — something that just keeps recurring. 总 means "all in all, in every case," so 总是 says "in every case, it's like this." It's neutral in tone and sits before the verb.

    Structure: Subject + 总是 + Verb · with an adjective: 总是 + 很 / 特别 + Adj

    he他tāalways总是zǒng shìlate迟到chí dào。

    He's always late.

    your你nǐhome家jiāalways总是zǒng shìvery很hěnclean干净gān jìng。

Your home is always so clean.

Remember: 总 = "in every case." 总是 is the neutral "always" (a pattern); its grumbling twin 老是 (below) adds the eye-roll.

    Watch out

    • Before an adjective you must add a degree word: 总是很累 ✓, not 总是累.
    • 总是 = a recurring habit; 一直 = one unbroken stretch. "He's always late" (each time) is 总是; "it rained the whole time" is 一直.
    Português

总是 é "sempre" no sentido de um hábito ou padrão consistente — algo que continua se repetindo. 总 significa "no geral, em todos os casos", então 总是 diz "em todos os casos, é assim." Tem tom neutro e fica antes do verbo.

    Estrutura: Subject + 总是 + Verb · com um adjetivo: 总是 + 很 / 特别 + Adj

    he他tāalways总是zǒng shìlate迟到chí dào。

    Ele está sempre atrasado.

    your你nǐhome家jiāalways总是zǒng shìvery很hěnclean干净gān jìng。

Sua casa está sempre tão limpa.

Lembre-se: 总 = "em todos os casos." 总是 é o "sempre" neutro (um padrão); seu gêmeo resmungador 老是 (abaixo) adiciona a reviravolta nos olhos.

    Cuidado

    • Antes de um adjetivo você deve adicionar uma palavra de grau: 总是很累 ✓, não 总是累.
    • 总是 = um hábito recorrente; 一直 = uma duração ininterrupta. "Ele está sempre atrasado" (cada vez) é 总是; "choveu o tempo todo" é 一直.
    2.4

    终于 — "finalmente, por fim"

    English

终于 marks something finally happening after a long wait — and it glows with relief or joy. 终 is "the end / finish line" (the 终 of 终点), so 终于 is "at the finish line, it came." Unlike English "finally," it can't stand alone, move to the front, or end a sentence — and it must team up with 了.

    Structure: Subject + 终于 + Predicate + 了

    you你nǐfinally终于zhōng yúarrived到dào了le!

    You're finally here!

    the homework作业zuò yèfinally终于zhōng yúdone做zuòfinished完wán了le!

    I've finally finished the homework!

Remember: 终 = the finish line you've been straining toward — 终于 is the sigh of relief as you cross it, always sealed with 了.

    Watch out

    • The 了 is obligatory — 终于…了; never 终于 bare like English "finally" on its own.
    • It implies a welcome outcome. For a flat, neutral "in the end," use 最后.
    Português

终于 marca algo acontecendo finalmente após longa espera — e brilha com alívio ou alegria. 终 é "o fim / linha de chegada" (o 终 de 终点), então 终于 é "na linha de chegada, chegou." Diferente do inglês "finally", não pode ficar sozinho, ir para o início ou encerrar uma frase — e deve vir acompanhado de 了.

    Estrutura: Subject + 终于 + Predicate + 了

    you你nǐfinally终于zhōng yúarrived到dào了le!

    Finalmente você chegou!

    the homework作业zuò yèfinally终于zhōng yúdone做zuòfinished完wán了le!

Finalmente terminei o dever de casa!

Lembre-se: 终 = a linha de chegada para a qual você lutou — 终于 é o suspiro de alívio ao cruzá-la, sempre selado com 了.

    Cuidado

    • O 了 é obrigatório — 终于…了; nunca 终于 nu como o inglês "finally" sozinho.
    • Implica um resultado agradável. Para um "no final" plano e neutro, use 最后.
    2.5

    几乎 — "quase, praticamente"

    English

几乎 means "nearly, almost" — it gets you right up to the line without quite crossing it. It loves company: it very often teams up with an "all" word (每, 所有, 全 … 都) or a "none" word (没有, 不).

    Structure: 几乎 + 每 / 所有 … 都 … · Subject + 几乎 + [不 / 没] + Predicate

almost几乎jī hūeveryone每个人měi ge rénall都dōuhas有yǒua phone手机shǒu jī。

    Almost everyone has a phone.

    almost几乎jī hūno没有méi yǒuone人rénbelieves相信xiāng xìnhim他tā。

    Almost no one believes him.

    my我wǒboss老板lǎo bǎnhardly几乎jī hūever不bùdrinks喝酒hē jiǔ。

    My boss hardly ever drinks.

Remember: think of 几乎 as a needle stopping just short of the mark. 几乎 + 都 → "almost all"; 几乎 + 没有 → "almost none"; 几乎不 / 几乎没 → "hardly ever."

    Watch out

    • It points to one extreme (all or none) — pair it with a 都 / 没有 / 不 to land the meaning.
    Português

几乎 significa "quase, praticamente" — te leva bem perto da linha sem cruzá-la. Adora companhia: frequentemente combina com uma palavra de "todo" (每, 所有, 全 … 都) ou uma palavra de "nenhum" (没有, 不).

    Estrutura: 几乎 + 每 / 所有 … 都 … · Subject + 几乎 + [不 / 没] + Predicate

almost几乎jī hūeveryone每个人měi ge rénall都dōuhas有yǒua phone手机shǒu jī。

    Quase todo mundo tem celular.

    almost几乎jī hūno没有méi yǒuone人rénbelieves相信xiāng xìnhim他tā。

    Quase ninguém acredita nele.

    my我wǒboss老板lǎo bǎnhardly几乎jī hūever不bùdrinks喝酒hē jiǔ。

    Meu chefe quase nunca bebe.

Lembre-se: pense em 几乎 como uma agulha parando pouco antes do alvo. 几乎 + 都 → "quase todos"; 几乎 + 没有 → "quase nenhum"; 几乎不 / 几乎没 → "quase nunca."*

    Cuidado

    • Aponta para um extremo (todo ou nenhum) — combine-o com 都 / 没有 / 不 para fixar o significado.
    2.6

    只 — "apenas"

    English

只 (zhǐ) is the everyday word for "only." It's an adverb, so it clings to the verb (or an auxiliary like 会 / 能) — never to the noun the way English "only" floats around.

    Structure: 只 + Verb · 只 + 会 / 能 + Verb

    I我wǒonly只zhǐhave有yǒuone一个yí geolder brother哥哥gē ge。

I only have one older brother.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐwant想xiǎngto be with跟gēnyou你nǐtogether在一起zài yì qǐ。

I only want to be with you.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐcan能néngsay说shuōtwo两liǎngsentences句jùChinese中文Zhōng wén。

I can only say a couple of sentences in Chinese.

Remember: 只 sits on the verb: 我只有一个 ("I only have one"), never 我有只一个. English "only" wanders; Chinese 只 stays glued to the verb.

    Watch out

    • 只 (zhǐ, "only") is written the same as 只 (zhī), the measure word for animals (一只猫) — same character, two readings and jobs.
    Português

只 (zhǐ) é a palavra cotidiana para "apenas." É um advérbio, então se agarra ao verbo (ou auxiliar como 会 / 能) — nunca ao substantivo, como o inglês "only" flutua.

    Estrutura: 只 + Verb · 只 + 会 / 能 + Verb

    I我wǒonly只zhǐhave有yǒuone一个yí geolder brother哥哥gē ge。

Tenho apenas um irmão mais velho.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐwant想xiǎngto be with跟gēnyou你nǐtogether在一起zài yì qǐ。

    Quero estar apenas com você.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐcan能néngsay说shuōtwo两liǎngsentences句jùChinese中文Zhōng wén。

Consigo dizer apenas algumas frases em chinês.

Lembre-se: 只 fica sobre o verbo: 我只有一个 ("Eu tenho apenas um"), nunca 我有只一个. O inglês "only" vagueia; o chinês 只 cola no verbo.

    Cuidado

    • 只 (zhǐ, "apenas") é escrito igual a 只 (zhī), a classe gramatical para animais (一只猫) — mesmo caractere, duas leituras e funções.
    2.7

    Duração + 没 + 动词 + 了 — quanto tempo você *não fez* algo

    English

Here's a word order that trips up English speakers. To say how long you have NOT done something, the duration jumps in front of the verb: time + 没 + verb + 了. Compare the normal "did it for ten years" (verb first), and you'll see the mirror image.

    Structure: Subject + (已经 +) Duration + 没 + Verb + 了

    we我们wǒ menalready已经yǐ jīngten years十年shí niánhaven't没méimet见jiàn了le。

We haven't seen each other for ten years now.

he他tāa week一个星期yí ge xīng qīhasn't没méishowered洗澡xǐ zǎo了le。

He hasn't showered in a week.

    you你nǐhow long多久duō jiǔhaven't没méibeen home回家huí jiā了le?

How long has it been since you went home?

Remember: "have done" puts time after the verb; "haven't done" puts time before it. 看了十年 = "watched for ten years"; 十年没看了 = "haven't watched in ten years." The 了 here means "and counting."

    Watch out

    • Chinese avoids "since [a time point]." Say a duration instead (三年没…了), or 上次…是… ("the last time was…").
    Português

Aqui está uma ordem que confunde falantes de inglês. Para dizer quanto tempo você NÃO fez algo, a duração salta antes do verbo: time + 没 + verb + 了. Compare com o normal "fez por dez anos" (verbo primeiro), e verá a imagem espelhada.

    Estrutura: Subject + (已经 +) Duration + 没 + Verb + 了

    we我们wǒ menalready已经yǐ jīngten years十年shí niánhaven't没méimet见jiàn了le。

Não nos vemos há dez anos agora.

he他tāa week一个星期yí ge xīng qīhasn't没méishowered洗澡xǐ zǎo了le。

Ele não toma banho há uma semana.

    you你nǐhow long多久duō jiǔhaven't没méibeen home回家huí jiā了le?

Há quanto tempo você não foi para casa?

Lembre-se: "fez" coloca o tempo depois do verbo; "não fez" coloca o tempo antes. 看了十年 = "assistiu por dez anos"; 十年没看了 = "não assistiu há dez anos." O 了 aqui significa "e contando."

    Cuidado

    • O chinês evita "desde [ponto de tempo]". Diga uma duração em vez disso (三年没…了), ou 上次…是… ("a última vez foi…").
    2.8

    Tempo + 才 + 动词 — "somente quando" (atraso)

    English

才 (cái) drags an action later than expected — "not until, as late as." If 就 says "already, sooner than you'd think," 才 is its grumpy opposite: "only then, finally, took its time."

    Structure: Subject + Time + 才 + Verb

I我wǒyesterday昨天zuó tiāneleven o'clock十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáigot home到家dào jiā。

I didn't get home until eleven last night.

he他tātwenty-five二十五岁èr shí wǔ suìnot until才cáistarted上shànguniversity大学dà xué。

He didn't start university until he was twenty-five.

Remember: 才 = late / barely (就 = early / already). And 才 takes no 了 — the lateness is the point, not a completed result: 四十岁才结婚 ✓, never 才结婚了.

    Watch out

    • Same character does double duty: before a time it means "late" (this point); before a number it means "only a little" (point 2.12 below).
    Português

才 (cái) arrasta uma ação mais tarde do que o esperado — "somente quando, tão tarde quanto." Se 就 diz "já, mais cedo do que pensava", 才 é seu oposto resmungão: "só então, finalmente, demorou."*

    Estrutura: Subject + Time + 才 + Verb

I我wǒyesterday昨天zuó tiāneleven o'clock十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáigot home到家dào jiā。

Cheguei em casa apenas às onze da noite passada.

he他tātwenty-five二十五岁èr shí wǔ suìnot until才cáistarted上shànguniversity大学dà xué。

Ele só entrou na universidade aos vinte e cinco anos.

    Lembre-se: 才 = tarde / mal (就 = cedo / já). E 才 não leva 了 — o atraso é o ponto, não um resultado concluído: 四十岁才结婚 ✓, nunca 才结婚了.

    Cuidado

    • O mesmo caractere faz dupla função: antes de um tempo significa "tarde" (este ponto); antes de um número significa "apenas um pouco" (ponto 2.12 abaixo).
    2.9

    先 … ,再 … — "primeiro …, depois …"

    English

To line events up in order, frame them with 先 … 再 … — "first …, (and) then …." The trap: here 再 means "then / next," not its usual "again."

    Structure: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃chī。

Wash your hands first, then eat.

Do your homework first, then watch TV.

Remember: in 先…再…, 再 is the "and then" of a sequence, not "again." Picture two stepping stones: step on 先 first, then 再.

    Watch out

    • 先…再说 means "do X first, then we'll see" — a "deal with it later" feeling: 先吃饭再说.
    • Chain longer sequences with 然后 ("and then") and 接着 ("next").
    Português

Para alinhar eventos em ordem, enquadre-os com 先 … 再 … — "primeiro …, (e) depois …." A armadilha: aqui 再 significa "depois / em seguida," não seu significado usual de "novamente."

一边 … 一边 … — fazendo duas coisas ao mesmo tempo

    English

Two deliberate actions happening at the same time? Frame both with 一边 … 一边 … — "(do X) while (doing Y)." 边 means "side," so it's literally "on one side … on the other side …" — two tracks running together.

    Structure: Subject + 一边 + Verb 1 (,) 一边 + Verb 2

I我wǒoften常常cháng chángwhile一边yì biānshowering洗澡xǐ zǎo,一边yì biānsing唱歌chàng gē。

I often sing in the shower.

    don't别biéwhile一边yì biāndriving开车kāi chē,一边yì biānmake calls打电话dǎ diàn huà。

    Don't make calls while driving.

Remember: 边 = "side" — one action on each side, at once. Casually it shrinks to 边…边… (边走边聊, "chatting as we walk").

    Watch out

    • Both actions must be intentional; for "while X was going on," use …的时候.
    • The main action is usually the second one in Chinese (English often flips the order).
    Português

Duas ações intencionais acontecendo ao mesmo tempo? Enquadre ambas com 一边 … 一边 … — "(faça X) enquanto (faz Y)." 边 significa "lado", então é literalmente "num lado … no outro lado …" — dois trilhos correndo juntos.

    Estrutura: Subject + 一边 + Verb 1 (,) 一边 + Verb 2

I我wǒoften常常cháng chángwhile一边yì biānshowering洗澡xǐ zǎo,一边yì biānsing唱歌chàng gē。

    Eu canto muito no chuveiro.

    don't别biéwhile一边yì biāndriving开车kāi chē,一边yì biānmake calls打电话dǎ diàn huà。

    Não faça ligações enquanto dirige.

Lembre-se: 边 = "lado" — uma ação de cada lado, ao mesmo tempo. casualmente ele se encurta para 边…边… (边走边聊, "conversando enquanto caminhamos").

    Cuidado

    • Ambas as ações devem ser intencionais; para "enquanto X estava acontecendo", use …的时候.
    • A ação principal geralmente é a segunda em chinês (em inglês a ordem muitas vezes é invertida).

    老是 — "sempre" (uma reclamação)

    English

老是 (or just 老) also means "always" — but it's the grumbling version, loaded with frustration, like "you're always on your phone." Swap it in for 总是 anywhere you want to add an eye-roll.

    Structure: Subject + 老(是) + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy怎么zěn mealways老是lǎo shìlate迟到chí dào?

    Why are you always late?

    this这个zhè gemachine机器jī qìalways老是lǎo shìhaving出chūtrouble问题wèn tí。

This machine is always breaking down.

Remember: 总是 is neutral; 老是 complains. If you could add "ugh" to the English, use 老是.

    Watch out

    • It's a complaint — don't use it for something good (use 总是 there).
    • Before an adjective, add 不 / 很 / 这么: 老是不高兴.
    Português

老是 (ou apenas 老) também significa "sempre" — mas é a versão queixosa, carregada de frustração, como "você está sempre no celular." Troque-o por 总是 sempre que quiser adicionar um suspiro de desânimo.

    Estrutura: Subject + 老(是) + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy怎么zěn mealways老是lǎo shìlate迟到chí dào?

Por que você está sempre atrasado?

    this这个zhè gemachine机器jī qìalways老是lǎo shìhaving出chūtrouble问题wèn tí。

    Esta máquina está sempre quebrando.

Lembre-se: 总是 é neutro; 老是 reclama. Se pudesse adicionar "ah" ao inglês, use 老是.

    • Antes de um adjetivo, adicione 不 / 很 / 这么: 老是不高兴.

    才 + número — "apenas" (pouca quantidade)

    English

A second job for 才 (cái): drop it before a number and it stresses the amount is smaller than you'd expect — "only, just, a mere." Where the "lateness" 才 says "late," this one says "barely that much."

    Structure: 才 + Number + Measure Word + Noun · 才 + Verb + Number + MW + Noun

    you你nǐonly才cáitwenty二十岁èr shí suì?

    You're only twenty?

Remember: one 才, two jobs — before a time it drags things late (2.8); before a number it shrinks the amount to only that much. Both share the feeling "less than expected."

    Watch out

    • After 才 + verb, the 了 is optional: 才来了两个月 ≈ 才来两个月.
    Português

Uma segunda função do 才 (cái): coloque-o antes de um número e ele enfatiza que a quantidade é menor do que esperado — "apenas, só, mero." Onde o "atraso" 才 diz "tarde", este diz "apenas essa quantia."

    Estrutura: 才 + Number + Measure Word + Noun · 才 + Verb + Number + MW + Noun

    you你nǐonly才cáitwenty二十岁èr shí suì?

Lembre-se: um 才, duas funções — antes de um tempo ele arrasta as coisas para o tarde (2.8); antes de um número ele diminui a quantidade para apenas isso. Ambos compartilham a sensação de "menos do que esperado."

    这么 / 那么 + adjetivo — "tão …, este / aquele …"

    English

Put 这么 or 那么 in front of an adjective to dial its degree up — English "so, this much, that much." The split mirrors English this vs that: 这么 points to something near or happening right now ("this cold"); 那么 points to something further off or already mentioned ("that clever").

Structure: Subject + 这么 / 那么 + Adjective

    today今天jīn tiānhow come怎么zěn meso这么zhè mecold冷lěng?

Why is it so cold today?

you你nǐso那么nà meclever聪明cōng mingsurely,一定yí dìngcan能néngguess it猜到cāi dào。

You're so clever — you'll definitely guess it.

Remember: 这 = here / now, 那 = there / then; the 么 turns "this/that" into "this much / that much." Same split as English this/that.

    Watch out

    • Both translate as "so," but keep the near/far feel: 这么 for what's in front of you, 那么 for what's removed.
    • Very common after 怎么 for a surprised "how come it's so …?": 怎么这么贵.
    Português

Coloque 这么 ou 那么 na frente de um adjetivo para aumentar seu grau — inglês "so, esta quantidade, aquela quantidade." A divisão espelha o inglês this vs that: 这么 aponta para algo perto ou acontecendo agora ("este frio"); 那么 aponta para algo mais distante ou já mencionado ("aquele inteligente").

Estrutura: Subject + 这么 / 那么 + Adjective

Você é tão esperto — vai adivinhar com certeza.

    Lembre-se: 这 = aqui / agora, 那 = ali / então; o 么 transforma "este/aquele" em "esta quantidade / aquela quantidade." Mesma divisão que this/that em inglês.

    Cuidado

    • Ambos traduzem como "tão", mas mantenha a sensação perto/longe: 这么 para o que está à sua frente, 那么 para o que está afastado.
    • Muito comum após 怎么 para um surpreso "como assim está tão …?": 怎么这么贵.
    3.2

    A + 跟 / 和 + B + 一样 — "igual a, tão … quanto"

    English

To say two things are alike, link them with 跟 (or 和) and 一样 — literally "one same (shape)." Add an adjective on the end and you get "equally …, as … as."

    Structure: Noun 1 + 跟 / 和 + Noun 2 + 一样 (+ Adjective)

your home你家nǐ jiāas跟gēnmy home我家wǒ jiāthe same一样yí yàngbig大dà。

Your place is just as big as mine.

Beijing北京Běi jīng的deweather天气tiān qìand和héShanghai上海Shàng hǎinot不bùthe same一样yí yàng。

    Beijing's weather isn't the same as Shanghai's.

Remember: 一样 = "one-same" — cut from the same cloth. The adjective rides after 一样 (一样大 = "equally big"), and 不 to negate goes before it (不一样).

    Watch out

    • Word order traps English speakers: it's …一样大, never 大一样.
    • 跟 and 和 are interchangeable here; 跟 is more spoken, 和 a touch more neutral.
    Português

Para dizer que duas coisas são semelhantes, conecte-as com 跟 (ou 和) e 一样 — literalmente "um mesmo (formato)." Adicione um adjetivo no final e você obtém "igualmente …, tão … quanto."

    Estrutura: Noun 1 + 跟 / 和 + Noun 2 + 一样 (+ Adjective)

your home你家nǐ jiāas跟gēnmy home我家wǒ jiāthe same一样yí yàngbig大dà。

Seu lugar é exatamente do mesmo tamanho que o meu.

Beijing北京Běi jīng的deweather天气tiān qìand和héShanghai上海Shàng hǎinot不bùthe same一样yí yàng。

O clima de Pequim não é igual ao de Xangai.

Lembre-se: 一样 = "um-mesmo" — cortados do mesmo pano. O adjetivo fica depois de 一样 (一样大 = "igualmente grande"), e 不 para negar vai antes dele (不一样).

    Cuidado

    • Armadilhas de ordem de palavras para falantes de inglês: é …一样大, nunca 大一样.
    • 跟 e 和 são intercambiáveis aqui; 跟 é mais coloquial, 和 um pouco mais neutro.

    又 … 又 … — "tanto … quanto …"

    English

The frame 又 … 又 … stacks two qualities that hold at the same time — "both … and …." The one rule: the two adjectives must share the same feeling — both positive, or both negative. Mixing a plus and a minus jars the Chinese ear.

    Structure: Subject + 又 + Adjective 1 + 又 + Adjective 2

    this这个zhè gehouse房子fáng ziboth又yòubig大dàand又yòubright亮liàng。

This house is both big and bright.

    here这里zhè lǐ的decoffee咖啡kā fēiboth又yòuexpensive贵guìand又yòubad-tasting难喝nán hē。

The coffee here is both pricey and nasty.

Remember: both 又's must point the same way — 又便宜又好 (both plus ✓), 又贵又难喝 (both minus ✓), but not 又贵又好 (mixed ✗).

    Watch out

    • For two simultaneous actions rather than qualities, use 一边…一边… instead.
    Português

A estrutura 又 … 又 … empilha duas qualidades que valem ao mesmo tempo — "tanto … quanto …". A única regra: os dois adjetivos devem compartilhar o mesmo sentimento — ambos positivos, ou ambos negativos. Misturar um mais e um menos soa estranho ao ouvido chinês.

    Estrutura: Subject + 又 + Adjective 1 + 又 + Adjective 2

    this这个zhè gehouse房子fáng ziboth又yòubig大dàand又yòubright亮liàng。

Esta casa é tanto grande quanto iluminada.

Lembre-se: ambos os 又 devem apontar na mesma direção — 又便宜又好 (ambos mais ✓), 又贵又难喝 (ambos menos ✓), mas não 又贵又好 (misto ✗).

    Cuidado

    • Para duas ações simultâneas em vez de qualidades, use 一边…一边… em vez disso.

比较 + adjetivo — "bastante, razoavelmente, relativamente"

    English

比较 literally means "to compare," and as an adverb it means "fairly, rather, comparatively." It's a gentle hedge — softer and less absolute than 很 or 非常 — and it quietly implies "more so than the rest," even when nothing else is named.

Structure: Subject + 比较 + Adjective (also 比较 + feeling-verb)

    this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tífairly比较bǐ jiàosimple简单jiǎn dān。

Remember: 比较 has "compare" (比) baked in — it always whispers "relatively, compared to the alternatives." Use it to sound measured, not gushing.

    Watch out

    • Works with feeling-verbs too: 比较喜欢, 比较讨厌.
    Português

比较 significa literalmente "comparar", e como advérbio significa "bastante, razoavelmente, comparativamente." É uma moderação suave — mais leve e menos absoluta do que 很 ou 非常 — e implica quietamente "mais do que o restante", mesmo quando nada mais é nomeado.

Estrutura: Subject + 比较 + Adjective (também 比较 + feeling-verb)

    this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tífairly比较bǐ jiàosimple简单jiǎn dān。

Lembre-se: 比较 tem "comparar" (比) embutido — ele sempre sussurra "relativamente, comparado às alternativas." Use-o para soar medido, não exaltado.

    Cuidado

    • Funciona com verbos de sentimento também: 比较喜欢, 比较讨厌.

    多 + adjetivo — "como …!" (exclamação)

    English

In an exclamation, 多 (or 多么) before an adjective means "how …!, so …!" — a quick, emotional burst of admiration or complaint. It usually closes with 啊.

    Structure: Subject + 多 + Adjective + 啊!

    your你nǐdaughter女儿nǚ érhow多duōclever聪明cōng ming啊a!

    How clever your daughter is!

    on your own一个人yí ge rénhow多duōnice好hǎo!

Remember: the same 多 that asks about degree — 你多大?("how old?") — also exclaims it: 多大啊!("how big!"). The 啊 and the "!" are the tell.

    Watch out

    • It's an exclamation — pair it with 啊 and a "!".
    Português

    adjetivo + 的 + substantivo — descrevendo um substantivo

    English

To stick an adjective in front of a noun, glue them together with 的 — Chinese's all-purpose "of / 's" link. English just lines the words up ("a beautiful girl"); Chinese threads 的 between them.

    Structure: Adjective + 的 + Noun

    beautiful漂亮piào liang的degirl女孩儿nǚ háir

    a beautiful girl

    you你nǐwant要yàocold冷lěng的deor还是hái shìhot热rè的de?

Do you want a cold one or a hot one?

Remember: 的 clips an adjective onto a noun. A two-syllable adjective almost always needs it (漂亮的女孩); a tight one-syllable pairing can drop it (好朋友, "good friend").

    Watch out

    • Adj + 的 can stand alone for "the … one(s)": 我要甜的 ("I'll have the sweet one").
    Português

Para colocar um adjetivo na frente de um substantivo, junte-os com 的 — o elo universal do chinês "de / 's". O inglês apenas alinha as palavras ("uma garota bonita"); o chinês interpõe 的 entre elas.

    Estrutura: Adjective + 的 + Noun

    uma garota bonita

    you你nǐwant要yàocold冷lěng的deor还是hái shìhot热rè的de?

Você quer um gelado ou um quente?

Lembre-se: de acopla um adjetivo a um substantivo. Um adjetivo de dois sílabas quase sempre precisa dele (漂亮的女孩); um par apertado de uma sílaba pode omiti-lo (好朋友, "bom amigo").

    Cuidado

    或者 — "ou" (em afirmações)

    English

Use 或者 to lay out alternatives in a statement — "either … or." It tells, it doesn't ask: "coffee or tea, both fine." The moment you want the listener to choose, you must switch to 还是 (the last point in this topic) — this is the single most-tested "or" trap in Chinese.

    Structure: Possibility 1 + 或者 + Possibility 2

    I我wǒdrink喝hēcoffee咖啡kā fēior或者huò zhětea茶cháeither,都dōuis fine行xíng。

Remember: 或者 = "or" when you tell; 还是 = "or" when you ask. A statement ("either is fine") takes 或者; a question ("which one?") takes 还是.

    Watch out

    • It often closes with 都行 / 都可以 ("either one is fine").
    Português

Use 或者 para apresentar alternativas em uma afirmação — "ora … ora …". Ele informa, não pergunta: "café ou chá, ambos bem." No momento em que você quer que o ouvinte escolha, deve trocar para 还是 (o último ponto deste tópico) — esta é a única armadilha mais testada de "ou" no chinês.

    Estrutura: Possibility 1 + 或者 + Possibility 2

    I我wǒdrink喝hēcoffee咖啡kā fēior或者huò zhětea茶cháeither,都dōuis fine行xíng。

Saturday星期六xīng qī liùor或者huò zhěSunday星期天xīng qī tiānboth,都dōuwork可以kě yǐ。

    Sábado ou domingo funcionam.

Lembre-se: 或者 = "ou" quando você afirma; 还是 = "ou" quando você pergunta. Uma afirmação ("qualquer um serve") usa 或者; uma pergunta ("qual deles?") usa 还是.

    Cuidado

    • Frequentemente fecha com 都行 / 都可以 ("qualquer um está bem").

    那 / 那么 — "então, nesse caso"

    English

    Português

那 (ou o mais completo 那么) retoma o que foi dito e tira uma sugestão ou conclusão dele — "então, pois, nesse caso." Ele abre sua resposta, reagindo ao comentário da outra pessoa. (É o mesmo 那 de "aquele" — literalmente "sendo isso assim, …").

    Estrutura: Situation ,那(么) + Suggestion / Decision

    he他tāwon't不bùlisten听tīngthen,那nàI我wǒshould应该yīng gāido what怎么办zěn me bàn?

    跟 … (一起) + verbo — "com (alguém)"

    English

Before the verb, 跟 marks the person you do something with — "(together) with." It frequently teams up with 一起 ("together"). 跟 also means "to follow / heel," which is why it leans toward doing things alongside someone.

    Structure: Subject + 跟 + Person + (一起) + Verb

Remember: 跟 literally "to follow" — so 跟我读 is "read after me." The "with" phrase always sits before the verb: 跟你见面 ✓, never 见面你.

    Watch out

    • 跟 ≈ 和 for plain "with," but only 跟 carries the "follow" sense (跟我来, "come with / after me").
    Português

Antes do verbo, 跟 marca a pessoa com quem você faz algo com — "(juntamente) com." Frequentemente se associa com 一起 ("juntos"). 跟 também significa "seguir / calcanhar", razão pela qual tende a fazer coisas ao lado de alguém.

    Estrutura: Subject + 跟 + Person + (一起) + Verb

    you你nǐwant to要yàowith跟gēnme我wǒtogether一起yì qǐgo去qù吗ma?

    Quer vir comigo?

Friday星期五xīng qī wǔbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐneed to要yàofinish做完zuò wánthis这些zhè xiēwork工作gōng zuò。

You need to finish this work before Friday.

Remember: Chinese stamps the time-word after the event: 吃饭以前 = "eating-before." Flip the English order and tack 以前 on the end.

    Watch out

    • "Verb + 以前" means "before [doing] the action" (做作业以前 = "before doing homework").
    Português

Coloque 以前 (yǐqián) depois de um tempo ou uma ação para significar "antes" dela. A armadilha para falantes de inglês é a ordem: o ponto de referência vem primeiro, depois 以前 — o inverso exato de "before eating", que o chinês diz como "eating-before."

Estrutura: Time / Verb Phrase + 以前 ,……

    eating吃饭chī fànbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐwash hands洗手xǐ shǒu了le吗ma?

Você lavou as mãos antes de comer?

Friday星期五xīng qī wǔbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐneed to要yàofinish做完zuò wánthis这些zhè xiēwork工作gōng zuò。

Você precisa terminar este trabalho antes de sexta-feira.

Lembre-se: O chinês carimba a palavra de tempo depois do evento: 吃饭以前 = "antes-de-comer." Inverte a ordem do inglês e adicione 以前 no final.

    Cuidado

    • "Verb + 以前" significa "antes de [fazer] a ação" (做作业以前 = "antes de fazer lição de casa").

以前,…… — "no passado, antes" (geral)

    English

Drop 以前 at the front of a sentence and it means "in the past, back then" — a general earlier time, no specific event attached. It can also slip in right after the subject.

    Structure: 以前 + Subject + Verb · Subject + 以前 + Verb

in the past以前yǐ qiánI,我wǒcouldn't不会bú huìspeak说shuōChinese中文Zhōng wén。

    I couldn't speak Chinese before.

    he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shī。

He used to be a chef.

Remember: one 以前, two spots — after an event it's "before X" (吃饭以前); at the front it's "in the past, used to." It usually contrasts the past with now (often with a 了 marking the change).

    Watch out

    • Front position or after-the-subject — both are correct.
    Português

Remova 以前 no início de uma frase e ela significa "no passado, naquela época" — um tempo geral anterior, sem evento específico ligado. Ela também pode aparecer logo após o sujeito.

    Estrutura: 以前 + Subject + Verb · Subject + 以前 + Verb

in the past以前yǐ qiánI,我wǒcouldn't不会bú huìspeak说shuōChinese中文Zhōng wén。

Eu não conseguia falar chinês antes.

    he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shī。

    Ele era cozinheiro antigamente.

Lembre-se: um 以前, dois lugares — depois de um evento é "antes de X" (吃饭以前); no início é "no passado, costumava." Geralmente contrasta o passado com o agora (muitas vezes com um 了 marcando a mudança).

    Cuidado

    • Posição inicial ou após o sujeito — ambas estão corretas.
    5.3

刚才 — "acabei de / há pouco"

    English

刚才 (gāngcái) is a time word for the very recent past — "just now, a moment ago." Don't confuse it with the adverb 刚: 刚才 is a noun (a moment that just passed) and can stand alone, while 刚 ("just") clings to the verb.

Structure: (Subject +) 刚才 + Verb

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    What did you just say?

    just now刚才gāng cáiwho谁shéicame来lái了le?

    Who came just now?

Remember: 刚才 = a noun (a moment in the past, can sit anywhere); 刚 = an adverb (glued to the verb). 我刚到 ("I just arrived") vs 刚才谁来了?("who came a moment ago?").

    Watch out

    • 刚才 can take a 了 / 的 on the verb (刚才到的); 刚 + verb usually doesn't.
    Português

刚才 (gāngcái) é uma palavra de tempo para o passado muito recente — "acabei de, há pouco." Não confunda com o advérbio 刚: 刚才 é um substantivo (um momento que acabou de passar) e pode ficar sozinho, enquanto 刚 ("acabei") se fixa ao verbo.

Estrutura: (Subject +) 刚才 + Verb

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

O que você disse há pouco?

    just now刚才gāng cáiwho谁shéicame来lái了le?

    Quem chegou há pouco?

Lembre-se: 刚才 = um substantivo (um momento no passado, pode ficar em qualquer lugar); 刚 = um advérbio (colado ao verbo). 我刚到 ("Acabei de chegar") vs 刚才谁来了?("Quem chegou há pouco?").

    Cuidado

    • 刚才 pode receber um 了 / 的 no verbo (刚才到的); 刚 + verbo geralmente não recebe.

Tempo / Evento + 时 — "quando, na hora de"

    English

时 is a compact, formal stand-in for 的时候 — "when, at the time of" — placed after a time or event. The thing to remember: it drops the 的.

    Structure: Time / Event + 时 ,……

    exam考试kǎo shìduring时shídon't不要bú yàotalk说话shuō huà。

    Don't talk during the exam.

    I我wǒinterviews面试miàn shìduring时shíoften经常jīng chángask问wènthis这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tí。

I often ask this question during interviews.

Remember: 时 is 的时候 in its Sunday best — same meaning, formal register, and no 的: 考试时 ✓, never 考试的时. In speech you'd just say 考试的时候.

    Watch out

    • Reserve it for writing or set phrases; everyday speech uses 的时候.
    Português

时 é uma abreviação compacta e formal para 的时候 — "quando, na hora de" — colocada depois de um tempo ou evento. O que lembrar: ele elimina o 的.

    Estrutura: Time / Event + 时 ,……

    I我wǒinterviews面试miàn shìduring时shíoften经常jīng chángask问wènthis这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tí。

Muitas vezes faço essa pergunta durante entrevistas.

Lembre-se: 时 é 的时候 vestido a gala — mesmo significado, registro formal e sem 的: 考试时 ✓, nunca 考试的时. Na fala diríamos apenas 考试的时候.

    Cuidado

    • Reserve-o para escrita ou expressões fixas; a fala cotidiana usa 的时候.
    5.5

以后,…… — "no futuro, de agora em diante"

    English

At the start of a sentence, 以后 means "in the future, from now on, later." It mirrors 以前 exactly: it can sit at the front ("from now on"), after the subject, or after an event ("after …").

    Structure: 以后 + Subject + Verb · Event + 以后 ,……

    I我wǒfrom now on以后yǐ hòuwon't不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ了le。

I won't drink from now on.

class ends下课xià kèafter以后yǐ hòuwe,我们wǒ mengo去qùeat吃饭chī fàn。

    After class, let's go eat.

Remember: 以后 is the perfect mirror of 以前 — after an event = "after X" (下课以后 / 下课以前); at the front = "from now on" / "in the past." But it points to an indefinite future, not "in a moment" (that's 一会儿).

    Watch out

    • Don't let "later" mislead you into using it for "shortly" — 以后 is the open-ended future.
    Português

No início de uma frase, 以后 significa "no futuro, de agora em diante, mais tarde." Ele espelha 以前 exatamente: pode ficar no início ("de agora em diante"), após o sujeito ou após um evento ("depois de …").

    Estrutura: 以后 + Subject + Verb · Event + 以后 ,……

    I我wǒfrom now on以后yǐ hòuwon't不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ了le。

Não beberei de agora em diante.

class ends下课xià kèafter以后yǐ hòuwe,我们wǒ mengo去qùeat吃饭chī fàn。

    Depois da aula, vamos comer.

Lembre-se: 以后 é o perfeito espelho de 以前 — depois de um evento = "depois de X" (下课以后 / 下课以前); no início = "de agora em diante" / "no passado." Mas aponta para um futuro indeterminado, não "num instante" (isso é 一会儿).

    Cuidado

    • Não deixe "mais tarde" te enganar ao usá-lo para "logo em breve" — 以后 é o futuro aberto.
    5.6

…… ,后来 …… — "depois, mais tarde" (apenas passado)

    English

后来 (hòulái) sequences past events — "afterwards, later on." The hard limit: both events must have already happened. 后(after) + 来(came) — it has, by definition, already come.

Structure: [Past Event 1] ,后来 [Past Event 2]

    at first开始kāi shǐmy我wǒparents父母fù mǔdidn't不bùagree同意tóng yìlater,后来hòu láiagreed同意tóng yì了le。

At first my parents disapproved; later they came round.

he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shīlater,后来hòu láibecame当dāng了lethe boss老板lǎo bǎn。

He used to be a chef; later he became the boss.

Remember: 后来 = a PAST "and then" (both events done and dusted). For a future "and then," switch to 然后. The 来 ("came") tells you it has already arrived.

    Watch out

    • Never use 后来 for a plan or future sequence — that's 然后.
    Português

后来 (hòulái) sequencia eventos passados — "depois, mais tarde." O limite rígido: ambos os eventos já devem ter acontecido. 后 (depois) + 来 (veio) — ele tem, por definição, já veio.

Estrutura: [Past Event 1] ,后来 [Past Event 2]

    at first开始kāi shǐmy我wǒparents父母fù mǔdidn't不bùagree同意tóng yìlater,后来hòu láiagreed同意tóng yì了le。

Primeiro meus pais desaprovaram; depois eles mudaram de ideia.

he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shīlater,后来hòu láibecame当dāng了lethe boss老板lǎo bǎn。

Ele era cozinheiro; depois virou chefe.

Lembre-se: 后来 = um "e então" PASSADO (ambos os eventos concluídos). Para um "e então" futuro, alterne para 然后. O 来 ("veio") diz que ele já chegou.

    Cuidado

    • Nunca use 后来 para um plano ou sequência futura — isso é 然后.

Número + Número — aproximando com dois números seguidos

    English

Say two consecutive numbers back to back and you get "about, a few" — exactly like English "three or four" or "a day or two." It's the quickest way to be vague about a quantity.

Structure: Number + (next Number) + Measure Word + Noun

I我wǒwaited等děng了lefor you你nǐthree or four三四个sān sì gehours小时xiǎo shí。

I waited three or four hours for you.

this这个zhè geword词cíwe我们wǒ menhave studied学过xué guotwo or three times两三次liǎng sān cì了le。

We've studied this word two or three times now.

Remember: for the productive "N or N+1" approximation the two numbers are next-door neighbours — 三四, 七八, 两三. (A few skip-pairs survive only as fixed idioms — e.g. 三五 in 三五成群 / 三五天 "a few" — so learn those as set phrases, not as a pattern to build.) For "ten-odd / a dozen-ish," use 十几.

    Watch out

    • 一两 ("one or two") is the common small one: 一两天 ("a day or two").
    Português

Diga dois números consecutivos juntos e você obterá "cerca de, uns" — exatamente como em inglês "three or four" ou "a day or two." É a forma mais rápida de ser vago sobre uma quantidade.

Estrutura: Number + (next Number) + Measure Word + Noun

I我wǒwaited等děng了lefor you你nǐthree or four三四个sān sì gehours小时xiǎo shí。

Esperei três ou quatro horas por você.

this这个zhè geword词cíwe我们wǒ menhave studied学过xué guotwo or three times两三次liǎng sān cì了le。

Já estudamos esta palavra duas ou três vezes.

Lembre-se: para a aproximação produtiva "N ou N+1", os dois números são vizinhos — 三四, 七八, 两三. (Pares pulados sobrevivem apenas como idiomáticos fixos — ex.: 三五 em 三五成群 / 三五天 "uns" — então aprenda esses como frases feitas, não como padrão para construir.) Para "dez-somente-algo / uma dezena-ish", use 十几.

    Cuidado

    • 一两 ("um ou dois") é o comum pequeno: 一两天 ("um dia ou dois").

    万 / 亿 — números grandes

    English

Here's where Chinese numbers feel alien: the language counts big in 万 (ten thousand) and 亿 (hundred million), not in thousands and millions. So you have to group digits in fours, not threes — and that mental regrouping is the whole skill.

    Structure: Number + 万 · Number + 亿

    one million一百万yì bǎi wàn

    1,000,000 — literally "a hundred 万 (ten-thousands)."

    1.4 billion十四亿shí sì yì

    1.4 billion — roughly China's population.

    Remember: mentally shift the comma one digit left: 12,000 → "1|2000" → 一万两千. Lock in 万 = 10⁴ and 亿 = 10⁸, then regroup in fours: 52,152 = 五万两千一百五十二.

    Watch out

    • English "million" = 一百万 (a hundred 万); English "billion" = 十亿 (ten 亿). The mismatch is what trips people up.
    Português

Aqui é onde os números chineses parecem estranhos: a língua conta grandes quantidades em 万 (dez mil) e 亿 (cento milhões), não em milhares e milhões. Então você precisa agrupar dígitos em quartetos, não em trios — e esse reagrupamento mental é toda a habilidade.

    Estrutura: Number + 万 · Number + 亿

    one million一百万yì bǎi wàn

    1,000,000 — literalmente "cem 万 (dez mils)."

    1.4 billion十四亿shí sì yì

1.4 bilhões — aproximadamente a população da China.

    Lembre-se: mentalmente desloque a vírgula um dígito para a esquerda: 12,000 → "1|2000" → 一万两千. Fixe 万 = 10⁴ e 亿 = 10⁸, depois agrupe em quartetos: 52,152 = 五万两千一百五十二.

    Cuidado

    • Inglês "million" = 一百万 (cem 万); Inglês "billion" = 十亿 (dez 亿). A discrepância é o que causa problemas.

    x 点 y 分 / 刻 / 差 — dizendo a hora (preciso)

    English

Once you can say whole hours, add the detail: 分 for minutes, 刻 for quarter-hours, and 差 for the minutes short of the hour. One quirk: a single-digit minute needs a 零 ("oh") to fill the gap.

    Structure: x 点 (零) y 分 · x 点 y 刻 · 差 y 分 x 点

    two o'clock两点liǎng diǎnoh零língnine minutes九分jiǔ fēn

    2:09 (零 fills the single-digit minute).

    to差chàfive minutes五分wǔ fēnthree o'clock三点sān diǎn

    Five to three.

Remember: 刻 = a quarter (一刻 = :15, 三刻 = :45); 差 = "short of," so 差五分三点 is "five to three"; and any minute under 10 takes a 零 (两点零九分).

    Watch out

    • 差 comes first, before the minutes and hour: 差五分八点 = "7:55."
    Português

Depois de saber dizer as horas inteiras, adicione o detalhe: 分 para minutos, 刻 para quartos de hora, e 差 para os minutos faltando para a hora. Um detalhe: um minuto de dígito único precisa de um 零 ("zero") para preencher a lacuna.

    Estrutura: x 点 (零) y 分 · x 点 y 刻 · 差 y 分 x 点

    two o'clock两点liǎng diǎnoh零língnine minutes九分jiǔ fēn

2:09 (零 preenche o minuto de dígito único).

    to差chàfive minutes五分wǔ fēnthree o'clock三点sān diǎn

    Cinco menos três.

    Lembre-se: 刻 = um quarto (一刻 = :15, 三刻 = :45); 差 = "faltando", então 差五分三点 é "cinco menos três"; e qualquer minuto abaixo de 10 pede um 零 (两点零九分).

    Cuidado

    • 差 vem primeiro, antes dos minutos e da hora: 差五分八点 = "7:55."
    6.4

    Número + 点(钟) — dizendo a hora (básico)

    English

The whole hour is a number + 点 ("o'clock"), with 半 for half past. A full time-stamp is built big-to-small: day → part of day → clock time — the opposite of casual English.

    Structure: (上午 / 下午 +) Number + 点 (+ 半)

now现在xiàn zàiafternoon下午xià wǔhalf past two两点半liǎng diǎn bàn。

    It's 2:30 pm now.

Sunday星期天xīng qī tiānmorning上午shàng wǔhalf past ten十点半shí diǎn bàn

    Sunday at 10:30 am.

Remember: there's no "am/pm" word — put 上午 (morning) or 下午 (afternoon) before the time, and build everything big-to-small (date → part of day → 点). The 钟 in 点钟 is optional and usually dropped.

    Watch out

    • "2 o'clock" is 两点, not 二点 — use 两 for the hour count.
    Português

A hora inteira é número + 点 ("em ponto"), com 半 para meia-hora. Uma marcação completa de tempo é construída do maior para o menor: dia → parte do dia → hora no relógio — o oposto do inglês casual.

    Estrutura: (上午 / 下午 +) Number + 点 (+ 半)

now现在xiàn zàiafternoon下午xià wǔhalf past two两点半liǎng diǎn bàn。

    São 2:30 da tarde agora.

Sunday星期天xīng qī tiānmorning上午shàng wǔhalf past ten十点半shí diǎn bàn

    Domingo às 10:30 da manhã.

Lembre-se: não há palavra "am/pm" — coloque 上午 (manhã) ou 下午 (tarde) antes da hora, e construa tudo do maior para o menor (data → parte do dia → 点). O 钟 em 点钟 é opcional e geralmente omitido.

    Verbo + 着 — um estado contínuo

    English

着 (zhe) after a verb freezes the action into a lingering state — the door is (standing) open, you are holding it. Think of 着 as a clip that keeps the verb "switched on." A second, very common use is Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2: V1着 sets the posture or manner, and V2 is the real action done in that state.

    Structure: Verb + 着 · Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2

you all你们nǐ mensit坐zuò着zheI,我wǒright away马上mǎ shàngcome back回来huí lái。

Stay seated — I'll be right back.

    she她tālikes to喜欢xǐ huanstand站zhàn着zheeat吃饭chī fàn。

She likes to eat standing up.

    he他tāsmiling笑xiào着zhesaid说shuōsorry对不起duì bu qǐ。

    Smiling, he said sorry.

Remember: 着 = the verb held on, lingering (门开着 = "the door stays open"); for an action actively in progress, use 在 (他在吃饭). In V1着V2, V1 is the backdrop, V2 the real action — 站着吃 = "eat while standing."

    Watch out

    • 着 is a state, not a play-by-play — pair it with 在/正在 only when you really mean "is currently …".
    Português

着 (zhe) depois de um verbo congela a ação em um estado perdurante — a porta está (ficando) aberta, você segura ela. Pense em 着 como um clipe que mantém o verbo "ligado". Um segundo uso muito comum é Verbo 1 + 着 + Verbo 2: V1着 define a postura ou modo, e V2 é a ação real feita nesse estado.

    Estrutura: Verb + 着 · Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2

you all你们nǐ mensit坐zuò着zheI,我wǒright away马上mǎ shàngcome back回来huí lái。

    Fiquem sentados — volto logo.

    she她tālikes to喜欢xǐ huanstand站zhàn着zheeat吃饭chī fàn。

Ela gosta de comer em pé.

    he他tāsmiling笑xiào着zhesaid说shuōsorry对不起duì bu qǐ。

    Sorrindo, ele pediu desculpas.

Lembre-se: 着 = o verbo preso, perdurando (门开着 = "a porta continua aberta"); para uma ação ativamente em andamento, use 在 (他在吃饭). Em V1着V2, V1 é o cenário, V2 a ação real — 站着吃 = "comer enquanto está em pé."

    Cuidado

    • 着 é um estado, não um play-by-play — combine-o com 在/正在 apenas quando realmente quiser dizer "está atualmente …".
    7.2

    …… 了 — uma mudança de estado

    English

Sentence-final 了 can announce a new situation — something has become the case that wasn't before. This "change" 了 (often called 了₂) is a different beast from the 了 that marks a completed action; here it means "now."

    Structure: Subject + Adjective + 了 · Subject + Verb + 了

    I我wǒhungry饿è了le。

    I'm hungry (now).

    raining下雨xià yǔ了le。

    It's raining (it wasn't before).

    the baby宝宝bǎo baocan会huìtalk说话shuō huà了le。

    The baby can talk now.

Remember: this 了 = "now, a new state" (饿了 = "hungry now"), not "did and finished." Whenever you'd add "now" in English, this is the 了 you want: 他当经理了 ("he's a manager now").

    Watch out

    • Same character, two jobs: change-of-state 了 (新情况) vs completed-action 了 (做完了). Context and position tell them apart.
    Português

了 final de frase pode anunciar uma nova situação — algo se tornou o caso que não era antes. Essa "mudança" 了 (muitas vezes chamada de 了₂) é diferente do 了 que marca uma ação concluída; aqui significa "agora".

    Estrutura: Subject + Adjective + 了 · Subject + Verb + 了

    I我wǒhungry饿è了le。

    Estou com fome (agora).

    raining下雨xià yǔ了le。

    Está chovendo (não estava antes).

    the baby宝宝bǎo baocan会huìtalk说话shuō huà了le。

    O bebê agora consegue falar.

Lembre-se: este 了 = "agora, um novo estado" (饿了 = "com fome agora"), não "fez e terminou." Sempre que você adicionaria "agora" em inglês, este é o 了 que você quer: 他当经理了 ("ele agora é gerente").

    Cuidado

    • Mesmo caractere, dois trabalhos: 了 de mudança de estado (nova situação) vs 了 de ação concluída (feito). Contexto e posição os distinguem.
    7.3

    …… 呢? — "e você? / e tal de …?"

    English

呢 at the end lobs a question back without you having to repeat it — "and …? what about …?" A neat extra: a bare noun + 呢 (with no prior question) asks "where is …?"

    Structure: Topic + 呢?

    I我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎoyou,你nǐ呢ne?

    I'm well — and you?

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jī呢ne?

    Where's my phone?

Remember: 呢 = "…and X?" — it bounces the last question back (你呢? "and you?"). With nothing asked before, noun + 呢 means "where is X?" (钱呢? "where's the money?").

    Watch out

    • It rides on context — without a prior question or a "where is" sense, a bare 呢 has nothing to bounce off.
    Português

呢 no final lança uma pergunta de volta sem precisar repeti-la — "e …? e tal de …?" Um extra interessante: um substantivo nu + 呢 (sem pergunta prévia) pergunta "onde está …?"

    Estrutura: Topic + 呢?

    I我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎoyou,你nǐ呢ne?

    Estou bem — e você?

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jī呢ne?

    Onde está meu celular?

Lembre-se: 呢 = "…e X?" — ele devolve a última pergunta (你呢? "e você?"). Com nada perguntado antes, substantivo + 呢 significa "onde está X?" (钱呢? "onde está o dinheiro?").

    Cuidado

    • Ele depende do contexto — sem uma pergunta prévia ou um sentido de "onde está", um 呢 nu não tem nada contra o que rebater.

    Watch out

    • A true adverb (不, 也, 都) needs no 地 — only an adjective used adverbially does (认真地, but just 都, never 都地).

    关于 — "sobre, referente a, quanto a"

    English

关于 (guānyú) flags the topic a sentence is about — "about, regarding, as for." Used this way it opens the sentence, setting the subject up before you say anything about it: "As for X, …".

    Structure: 关于 + Topic ,……

as for关于guān yúChinese中国Zhōng guóhistory历史lì shǐI,我wǒknow知道zhī dào的denot much不多bù duō。

As for Chinese history, I don't know much.

as for关于guān yúyour你nǐ的desuggestion建议jiàn yìthe boss,老板lǎo bǎnstill还hái在zàiconsidering it考虑kǎo lǜ。

As for your suggestion, the boss is still thinking it over.

Remember: 关于 + topic = a headline at the front of the sentence ("Regarding X, …"). It can't sit mid-sentence like English "about."

    Watch out

    • Many English "about"s are baked into the Chinese verb — say 聊你的工作 ("talk about your job"), not 聊关于….
    Português

关于 (guānyú) marca o tópico do qual a frase trata — "sobre, referente a, quanto a." Usado assim, abre a frase, preparando o assunto antes de dizer algo sobre ele: "Quanto a X, …"

    Estrutura: 关于 + Topic ,……

as for关于guān yúChinese中国Zhōng guóhistory历史lì shǐI,我wǒknow知道zhī dào的denot much不多bù duō。

Quanto à história da China, não sei muito.

as for关于guān yúyour你nǐ的desuggestion建议jiàn yìthe boss,老板lǎo bǎnstill还hái在zàiconsidering it考虑kǎo lǜ。

Quanto à sua sugestão, o chefe ainda está pensando.

Lembre-se: 关于 + tópico = um título no início da frase ("Referente a X, …"). Ele não pode ficar no meio da frase como o inglês "about".

    Cuidado

    • Muitos "about"s em inglês estão incorporados no verbo chinês — diga 聊你的工作 ("converse sobre seu trabalho"), não 聊关于….
    8.2

    直到 … 才 … — "não até que"

    English

直到 (zhídào) means "all the way until (a point)." Pair it with 才 and you get the emphatic "not until X did Y happen" — the 才 is what stamps on the "and that's surprisingly late."

    Structure: 直到 + Time / Event ,Subject + 才 + Verb

not until直到zhí dàohalf past twelve十二点半shí èr diǎn bànI,我wǒonly then才cáifinished做完zuò wánthe homework作业zuò yè。

I didn't finish my homework until half past twelve.

he他tānot until直到zhí dàothe doctor医生yī shēngcame来lái了leonly then,才cáirelaxed放心fàng xīn。

He didn't relax until the doctor came.

Remember: 直到 sets the deadline, 才 delivers the "finally / only then." Drop the 才 and you lose the "annoyingly late" punch.

    Watch out

    • The subject may also go before 直到: 我直到十二点半才….
    Português

直到 (zhídào) significa "até (um ponto)." Combine-o com 才 e você obtém o enfático "não foi até que X Y aconteceu" — é o 才 que enfatiza "e isso foi surpreendentemente tarde."

    Estrutura: 直到 + Time / Event ,Subject + 才 + Verb

not until直到zhí dàohalf past twelve十二点半shí èr diǎn bànI,我wǒonly then才cáifinished做完zuò wánthe homework作业zuò yè。

Eu não terminei minha lição de casa até as doze e meia.

he他tānot until直到zhí dàothe doctor医生yī shēngcame来lái了leonly then,才cáirelaxed放心fàng xīn。

Ele não relaxou até o médico chegar.

Lembre-se: 直到 estabelece o prazo, 才 entrega o "finalmente / só então." Remova o 才 e você perde a pontada de "infelizmente tarde."

    Cuidado

    • O sujeito também pode ir antes de 直到: 我直到十二点半才….

向 — "para, em direção a (e às vezes de)",

    English

向 (xiàng) aims an action towards a person or direction — no actual movement required (向他笑, "smile at him"). The twist English speakers must memorise: a few verbs that take "from" in English use 向 ("toward") in Chinese — 向…借钱 ("borrow from"), 向…学习 ("learn from").

    Structure: 向 + Direction / Person + Verb

    向xiàngforward前qiánlook看kàn。

    Look ahead.

    you你nǐmust必须bì xūto向xiànghim他tāapologise道歉dào qiàn!

    You must apologise to him!

    I我wǒdon't不bùlike喜欢xǐ huanfrom向xiàngfriends朋友péng youborrowing money借钱jiè qián。

I don't like borrowing money from friends.

Remember: 向 = an arrow pointing at someone. Even "learn / borrow from" is framed as aiming toward the source in Chinese: 向老师学习 ("learn toward the teacher").

    Watch out

    • Use it with verbs of facing or directing: 向前走 ("walk forward"), 向我求助 ("turn to me for help").
    Português

向 (xiàng) direciona uma ação em direção a uma pessoa ou direção — nenhum movimento real necessário (向他笑, "sorrir para ele"). A nuance que falantes de inglês devem memorizar: alguns verbos que levam "de" em inglês usam 向 ("em direção") no chinês — 向…借钱 ("pedir emprestado de"), 向…学习 ("aprender com/de").

    Estrutura: 向 + Direction / Person + Verb

    向xiàngforward前qiánlook看kàn。

    Olhe para frente.

    you你nǐmust必须bì xūto向xiànghim他tāapologise道歉dào qiàn!

Você deve pedir desculpas a ele!

    I我wǒdon't不bùlike喜欢xǐ huanfrom向xiàngfriends朋友péng youborrowing money借钱jiè qián。

Não gosto de pedir dinheiro emprestado aos amigos.

Lembre-se: 向 = uma seta apontando para alguém. Mesmo "aprender / pedir emprestado de" é enquadrado como visar em direção à fonte no chinês: 向老师学习 ("aprender em direção ao professor").

    Cuidado

    • Use-o com verbos de enfrentar ou direcionar: 向前走 ("andar para frente"), 向我求助 ("recorrer a mim para ajuda").

看起来 — "parece, parece estar, aparenta",

    English

看起来 (kànqǐlái) reports a snap impression from what you can see — "(it) looks / seems / appears" — and comes right before the description. Best of all, the whole sense-family works the same way: swap in 听 ("sounds"), 吃 ("tastes"), 用 ("feels to use") and you've got a free set of patterns.

Structure: Subject + 看起来 + Adjective

the cake蛋糕dàn gāolooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntasty好吃hǎo chī。

    The cake looks delicious.

    he他tālooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntired累lèi。

    He looks tired.

Remember: sense verb + 起来 = "comes across as …". 看起来 (looks), 听起来 (sounds), 吃起来 (tastes), 用起来 (handles) — learn the frame once, reuse it everywhere.

    Watch out

    • For an inferred "it seems" (a conclusion, not a look), reach for 好像 or 似乎 instead.
    Português

看起来 (kànqǐlái) relata uma impressão instantânea do que se pode ver — "(isso) parece / aparenta" — e vem imediatamente antes da descrição. O melhor de tudo: toda a família semântica funciona da mesma forma: troque por 听 ("soa"), 吃 ("tem sabor"), 用 ("tem sensação ao usar") e você terá um conjunto livre de padrões.

Estrutura: Subject + 看起来 + Adjective

the cake蛋糕dàn gāolooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntasty好吃hǎo chī。

    O bolo parece delicioso.

    he他tālooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntired累lèi。

    Ele parece cansado.

Lembre-se: verbo sensorial + 起来 = "transmite …". 看起来 (parece), 听起来 (soa), 吃起来 (tem sabor), 用起来 (manuseia) — aprenda a estrutura uma vez, reutilize-a em tudo.

    Cuidado

    • Para um "parece" inferido (uma conclusão, não uma visão), recorra a 好像 ou 似乎 em vez disso.
    9.2

    没(有) — "não tão … quanto" (comparação)

    English

没(有) is the flip side of 比: "A 没有 B + Adjective" means "A is not as [Adjective] as B." Yes — it's the very same 没有 as "not have," moonlighting as a comparison word.

    Structure: Noun 1 + 没(有) + Noun 2 + Adjective

Xiao Zhang小张Xiǎo Zhāngnot as没有méi yǒuXiao Li小李Xiǎo Lǐtall高gāo。

Xiao Zhang isn't as tall as Xiao Li.

    today今天jīn tiānnot as没有méi yǒuyesterday昨天zuó tiāncold冷lěng。

Today isn't as cold as yesterday.

Remember: 比 = "more than"; 没有 = "not as much as." 你比我高 ("you're taller than me") flips to 我没有你高 ("I'm not as tall as you"). Add 那么 for force: 没有他那么忙.

    Watch out

    • The adjective is bare — no 很: 没有你高 ✓, not 没有你很高.
    Português

没(有) é o lado oposto de 比: "A 没有 B + Adjetivo" significa "A não é tão [Adjetivo] quanto B." Sim — é o mesmo 没有 de "não ter", fazendo dupla função como palavra de comparação.

    Estrutura: Noun 1 + 没(有) + Noun 2 + Adjective

Xiao Zhang小张Xiǎo Zhāngnot as没有méi yǒuXiao Li小李Xiǎo Lǐtall高gāo。

Xiao Zhang não é tão alto quanto Xiao Li.

    today今天jīn tiānnot as没有méi yǒuyesterday昨天zuó tiāncold冷lěng。

Hoje não está tão frio quanto ontem.

Lembre-se: 比 = "mais que"; 没有 = "menos que". 你比我高 ("você é mais alto que eu") inverte-se para 我没有你高 ("eu não sou tão alto quanto você"). Adicione 那么 para ênfase: 没有他那么忙.

    Cuidado

    • O adjetivo fica赤裸裸 — sem 很: 没有你高 ✓, não 没有你很高.
    9.3

    让 / 叫 / 请 / 使 — fazer alguém fazer algo

    English

These causative verbs slot a person between the verb and what they end up doing — "make / let / ask / cause someone to …." Pick by tone: 让 is the everyday "make / let," 叫 a colloquial "tell," 请 a polite "ask / invite," and 使 a formal, written "cause."

    Structure: Subject + 让 / 叫 / 请 / 使 + Person + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy为什么wèi shén menot不bùlet让ràngme我wǒgo去qù?

Why won't you let me go?

    I我wǒwant想xiǎngto ask请qǐngyou你nǐdo帮bāngme我wǒa一个yí gefavour忙máng。

I'd like to ask you a favour.

Remember: all four mean "get someone to do something," sorted by politeness: 使 (formal) → 让 (neutral, "make/let") → 叫 (casual, "tell") → 请 (polite, "ask/invite"). 让 is your safe default in speech.

    Watch out

    • 让 covers both "make" and "let" — context decides which.
    Português

Estes verbos causativos inserem uma pessoa entre o verbo e o que ela acaba fazendo — "fazer / deixar / pedir / causar alguém a …". Escolha pelo tom: 让 é o cotidiano "fazer / deixar", 叫 é um "dizer" coloquial, 请 é um "pedir / convidar" educado, e 使 é um "causar" formal e literário.

    Estrutura: Subject + 让 / 叫 / 请 / 使 + Person + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy为什么wèi shén menot不bùlet让ràngme我wǒgo去qù?

Por que você não me deixa ir?

    I我wǒwant想xiǎngto ask请qǐngyou你nǐdo帮bāngme我wǒa一个yí gefavour忙máng。

Gostaria de te pedir um favor.

Lembre-se: os quatro significam "fazer alguém fazer algo", classificados por polidez: 使 (formal) → 让 (neutro, "fazer/deixar") → 叫 (informal, "dizer") → 请 (educado, "pedir/convidar"). 让 é sua escolha segura na fala.

    Cuidado

    • 让 cobre tanto "fazer" quanto "deixar" — o contexto decide qual.
    9.4

经过 — "passar por / depois de passar por"

    English

经过 (jīngguò) wears two hats. As a verb it means "pass by / through (a place)"; as a preposition it sets up "after going through (a process or time), …" before you state the result.

Structure: 经过 + Place (verb) · 经过 + Process / Time ,Result

I我wǒevery day每天měi tiānto work上班shàng bān都dōupass by经过jīng guòhere这里zhè lǐ。

I pass by here every day on my way to work.

after经过jīng guòhard work努力nǔ lìshe,她tāgot into考上kǎo shàng了leuniversity大学dà xué。

Through hard work, she got into university.

Remember: 经过 always means "go through" — through a place (the verb) or through a process (the preposition). Compare 通过 ("by means of, via"): 经过 rides a journey/process, 通过 rides a method/agent.

    Watch out

    • As a preposition it opens the sentence: 经过 + process, then the result.
    Português

经过 (jīngguò) usa dois chapéus. Como verbo, significa "passar por / através (de um lugar)"; como preposição, estabelece "depois de passar por (um processo ou tempo), …" antes de declarar o resultado.

Estrutura: 经过 + Place (verbo) · 经过 + Process / Time ,Result

I我wǒevery day每天měi tiānto work上班shàng bān都dōupass by经过jīng guòhere这里zhè lǐ。

Paso por aqui todo dia no caminho para o trabalho.

after经过jīng guòhard work努力nǔ lìshe,她tāgot into考上kǎo shàng了leuniversity大学dà xué。

Através de muito trabalho duro, ela entrou na universidade.

Lembre-se: 经过 sempre significa "passar por" — através de um lugar (o verbo) ou através de um processo (a preposição). Compare 通过 ("por meio de, via"): 经过 percorre uma jornada/processo, 通过 percorre um método/agente.

    Cuidado

    • Como preposição, abre a frase: 经过 + processo, então o resultado.

    应该 / 该 — "dever, ought to"

    English

应该 (yīnggāi, often clipped to 该) is the everyday "should, ought to" — what's right, advisable, or expected. It's an auxiliary verb, so it leans on the main verb that follows. A handy second meaning: it also covers "ought to be the case / probably" (an expectation, not a duty).

Structure: Subject + 应该 + Verb (+ Object)

    you你nǐshould应该yīng gāimore多duōrest休息xiū xi。

    You should rest more.

    I我wǒshould应该yīng gāigive给gěiyou你nǐhow much多少duō shaomoney钱qián?

    in在zàiChina中国Zhōng guóyou,你nǐshould应该yīng gāitry试试shì shibaijiu白酒bái jiǔ。

In China, you ought to try baijiu.

Remember: 应该 has two flavours — "should" (advice: 你应该休息) and "should be / probably" (expectation: 他应该到了, "he should be there by now"). Same word, told apart by context.

    Watch out

    • Negate with 不应该 ("shouldn't"): 你不应该这样做.
    • The clipped 该 is the casual spoken form: 你该走了 ("you'd better get going").
    Português

应该 (yīnggāi, frequentemente abreviado para 该) é o cotidiano "dever, ought to" — o que é correto, aconselhável ou esperado. É um verbo auxiliar, então depende do verbo principal que o segue. Um segundo significado útil: também cobre "dever ser / provavelmente" (uma expectativa, não um dever).

Estrutura: Subject + 应该 + Verb (+ Object)

    you你nǐshould应该yīng gāimore多duōrest休息xiū xi。

    Você deveria descansar mais.

    I我wǒshould应该yīng gāigive给gěiyou你nǐhow much多少duō shaomoney钱qián?

    in在zàiChina中国Zhōng guóyou,你nǐshould应该yīng gāitry试试shì shibaijiu白酒bái jiǔ。

Lembre-se: 应该 tem dois sabores — "dever" (conselho: 你应该休息) e "dever ser / provavelmente" (expectativa: 他应该到了, "ele já deve ter chegado"). Mesma palavra, diferenciada pelo contexto.

    Cuidado

    • Negue com 不应该 ("não deveria"): 你不应该这样做.

    难 + 动词 — "difícil de …"

    English

Stick 难 ("difficult") in front of a verb and you get "hard to …" — 难学 ("hard to learn"), 难找 ("hard to find"). Its mirror image is 好 ("easy to": 好学 "easy to learn"). With sense verbs, 难 fuses into fixed adjectives: 难吃 ("bad-tasting"), 难听 ("unpleasant to hear").

    Structure: Subject + (很) 难 + Verb

    Chinese汉语Hàn yǔvery很hěnhard to难nánlearn学xué。

    Chinese is hard to learn.

    here这里zhè lǐ的decoffee咖啡kā fēivery很hěnbad-tasting难喝nán hē。

    The coffee here tastes bad.

Remember: 难 = "hard to," 好 = "easy to." Bolt either onto a verb: 难懂 / 好懂 ("hard / easy to understand"), 难看 ("ugly," lit. "hard to look at"), 好看 ("good-looking").

    Watch out

    • With sense verbs it forms set adjectives: 难吃, 难听, 难闻 ("smells bad"), 难看 ("ugly").
    Português

Coloque 难 ("difícil") na frente de um verbo e você obtém "difícil de …" — 难学 ("difícil de aprender"), 难找 ("difícil de encontrar"). Sua imagem espelhada é 好 ("fácil de": 好学 "fácil de aprender"). Com verbos sensoriais, 难 funde-se em adjetivos fixos: 难吃 ("comer mal"), 难听 ("desagradável de ouvir").

    Estrutura: Subject + (很) 难 + Verb

    Chinese汉语Hàn yǔvery很hěnhard to难nánlearn学xué。

    Chinês é difícil de aprender.

    here这里zhè lǐ的decoffee咖啡kā fēivery很hěnbad-tasting难喝nán hē。

Lembre-se: 难 = "difícil de," 好 = "fácil de." Prenda qualquer um a um verbo: 难懂 / 好懂 ("difícil / fácil de entender"), 难看 ("feio", lit. "difícil de olhar"), 好看 ("bonito").

    Cuidado

    • Com verbos sensoriais forma adjetivos fixos: 难吃, 难听, 难闻 ("cheiro ruim"), 难看 ("feio").
    11.2

动词 + 了 + 时长 — "fez … por (um período de tempo)",

    English

To say how long a finished action lasted, drop the duration after the verb — Chinese has no "for" preposition, so the word order does the carrying. If there's an object too, slip 的 in front of it.

    Structure: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration (+ 的 + Object)

    he他tāstudied学xué了lea year一年yì niánChinese中文Zhōng wén。

He studied Chinese for a year.

we我们wǒ mentook坐zuò了lefifteen十五个shí wǔ gehours小时xiǎo shí的deflight飞机fēi jī。

    We took a fifteen-hour flight.

Remember: no "for" word — the slot does it. Duration goes after the verb (学了一年, "studied for a year"), and an object hangs off a 的 (看了一天的电视, "watched TV all day").

    Watch out

    • Contrast 一年没学了 ("haven't studied in a year"), where the same duration flips to before the verb.
    Português

Para dizer quanto tempo uma ação concluída durou, coloque a duração após o verbo — o chinês não tem preposição "for", então a ordem das palavras faz o carregamento. Se houver um objeto também, insira 的 diante dele.

    Estrutura: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration (+ 的 + Object)

    he他tāstudied学xué了lea year一年yì niánChinese中文Zhōng wén。

Ele estudou chinês por um ano.

we我们wǒ mentook坐zuò了lefifteen十五个shí wǔ gehours小时xiǎo shí的deflight飞机fēi jī。

Nós fizemos um voo de quinze horas.

Lembre-se: sem palavra "for" — o espaço faz isso. Duração vai depois do verbo (学了一年, "estudou por um ano"), e um objeto pendura-se num 的 (看了一天的电视, "assistiu TV o dia todo").

    Cuidado

    • Contraste 一年没学了 ("não estudei há um ano"), onde a mesma duração inverte-se para antes do verbo.
    11.3

    动词 + 了 + 时长 + 了 — "vem fazendo … (e ainda continua)",

    English

Tag a second 了 onto the very end and the action stretches up to now and keeps going — "have been …ing for X (and still am)." When the verb has an object, you repeat the verb.

    Structure: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了 · (with object) Subj + Verb + Obj + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了

    he他tāin在zàiBeijing北京Běi jīnghas lived住zhù了letwo years两年liǎng nián了le。

He's been living in Beijing for two years (and still is).

    I我wǒlearning学xuéChinese中文Zhōng wénhave learned学xué了lea year一年yì nián了le。

I've been learning Chinese for a year now.

Remember: one 了 = a finished stretch; two 了 = still going. That trailing 了 means "…and counting." With an object, double the verb: 学中文学了一年了.

    Watch out

    • Without the final 了, 住了两年 reads as "lived there two years (then left)" — the second 了 is the whole "still ongoing" difference.
    Português

Acrescente um segundo 了 bem no final e a ação se estende até agora e continua — "venir fazendo … por X (e ainda estou fazendo)." Quando o verbo tem um objeto, você repete o verbo.

    Estrutura: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了 · (com objeto) Subj + Verb + Obj + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了

    he他tāin在zàiBeijing北京Běi jīnghas lived住zhù了letwo years两年liǎng nián了le。

Ele vem morando em Pequim há dois anos (e ainda mora).

    I我wǒlearning学xuéChinese中文Zhōng wénhave learned学xué了lea year一年yì nián了le。

Vem estudando chinês há um ano agora.

Lembre-se: um 了 = um trecho concluído; dois 了 = ainda continuando. Aquela 了 final significa "…e contando." Com objeto, dobre o verbo: 学中文学了一年了.

    Cuidado

    • Sem a 了 final, 住了两年 lê-se como "morou lá dois anos (e depois saiu)" — a segunda 了 é toda a diferença de "ainda em andamento".
    11.4

没办法 + 动词 — "não há como, não dá",

    English

没办法 is "there's no way." Standing alone it's a shrug — "it can't be helped, what can you do." In front of a verb it means "have no way to …, can't possibly …."

Structure: Subject + 没办法 + Verb

Remember: 办法 = "a way / method," so 没办法 = "no way (to)" and 有办法 = "have a way." Alone, 没办法 is the all-purpose "what can you do."

    Watch out

    • It's stronger and more resigned than 不能 — it says the door is simply shut.
    Português

没办法 é "não há como." Sozinho, é um encolher de ombros — "não há solução, o que se pode fazer." Na frente de um verbo, significa "não ter como …, impossível …".

Lembre-se: 办法 = "um jeito / método", então 没办法 = "não há como (de)" e 有办法 = "ter um jeito." Sozinho, 没办法 é o "o que se pode fazer" universal.

    Cuidado

    • É mais forte e resignado que 不能 — diz que a porta está simplesmente trancada.

动词 + 动词 — suavização por reduplicação

    English

Double a verb and the action turns brief, light, "give-it-a-go" — "have a quick look," "talk it over." It warms the tone, perfect for soft suggestions and polite requests.

    Structure: Verb + Verb (one-syllable, AA) · ABAB (two-syllable)

I我wǒwant to想xiǎnggo out出去chū qùfor a little walk走走zǒu zou。

Remember: doubling a verb adds a "just a little / give it a try" softness. One-syllable doubles AA (看看), two-syllable doubles ABAB (商量商量) — not the adjective's AABB. 看一看 and past 看了看 are common variants.

    Watch out

    • It only fits actions you can do "a bit of" — you wouldn't reduplicate a one-off like 死 or 完成.
    Português

Duplique um verbo e a ação torna-se breve, leve, "dar uma olhada/dá uma tentada" — "dar uma olhadinha", "conversar sobre isso". Suaviza o tom, perfeito para sugestões suaves e pedidos educados.

I我wǒwant to想xiǎnggo out出去chū qùfor a little walk走走zǒu zou。

Gostaria de sair para caminhar um pouquinho.

    this这件zhè jiànmatter事shìwe我们wǒ mendiscuss商量shāng liang商量shāng liang。

    Vamos conversar sobre isso.

Lembre-se: duplicar um verbo adiciona uma suavidade de "só um pouco / dá uma tentada". Monossilábicos duplicam AA (看看), bisssilábicos duplicam ABAB (商量商量) — não o AABB dos adjetivos. 看一看 e passado 看了看 são variantes comuns.

    Cuidado

    • Só funciona com ações que você pode fazer "um pouquinho" — você não duplicaria algo único como 死 ou 完成.

    很 + 动词 — sentimentos levam 很

    English

A small club of feeling / mental verbs (喜欢, 想, 爱, 希望, 了解, 讨厌 …) act like adjectives and take 很 — which is exactly why beginners end up saying "very like!"

    Structure: Subject + 很 + [feeling verb]

    I我wǒreally很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanthis这部zhè bùfilm电影diàn yǐng。

    I really like this film.

    he他tāwell很hěnunderstands了解liǎo jiěChinese中国Zhōng guóculture文化wén huà。

    He understands Chinese culture well.

Remember: feelings behave like adjectives, so they take 很 (很喜欢, 很想). Action verbs don't — there's no 很吃 or 很走. If it's an emotion or a state of mind, 很 is welcome.

    Watch out

    • As with adjectives, this 很 is often just the plain positive form, not a strong "very."
    Português

Um pequeno clube de verbos de sentimento / mentais (喜欢, 想, 爱, 希望, 了解, 讨厌 …) agem como adjetivos e levam 很 — que é exatamente por que iniciantes acabam dizendo "muito like!"

    Estrutura: Subject + 很 + [feeling verb]

    I我wǒreally很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanthis这部zhè bùfilm电影diàn yǐng。

    Gosto muito deste filme.

    he他tāwell很hěnunderstands了解liǎo jiěChinese中国Zhōng guóculture文化wén huà。

Ele entende bem a cultura chinesa.

Lembre-se: sentimentos se comportam como adjetivos, então levam 很 (很喜欢, 很想). Verbos de ação não — não existe 很吃 ou 很走. Se for emoção ou estado mental, 很 é bem-vindo.

    Cuidado

    • Assim como com adjetivos, este 很 é muitas vezes apenas a forma positiva simples, não um "muito" forte.

    动词 + 来 / 去 — complementos de direção

    English

Tag 来 ("towards me") or 去 ("away from me") onto a verb to show which way the action moves relative to you, the speaker. These build into handy compounds — 进来 ("come in"), 出去 ("go out"), 起来 ("up"), 过来 ("over here").

    Structure: Verb + 来 / 去 · Verb + compound (上来 / 出去 …)

    I'm我wǒ在zàiupstairs楼上lóu shàngyou,你nǐcome up上来shàng lái。

    I'm upstairs — come up.

    please请qǐngstand站zhànup起来qǐ lái。

    Please stand up.

Remember: 来 = toward me, 去 = away from me — anchored to wherever the speaker stands. 进来 ("come in," I'm inside) vs 进去 ("go in," I'm outside).

    Watch out

    • With a place object, the place sits between the verb and 来 / 去: 回美国去 / 回美国 — never 回去美国.
    Português

Acrescente 来 ("em minha direção") ou 去 ("longe de mim") a um verbo para mostrar qual caminho a ação se move em relação a você, o falante. Estes formam compostos úteis — 进来 ("entrar"), 出去 ("sair"), 起来 ("levantar"), 过来 ("vir cá").

    Estrutura: Verb + 来 / 去 · Verb + compound (上来 / 出去 …)

    I'm我wǒ在zàiupstairs楼上lóu shàngyou,你nǐcome up上来shàng lái。

Estou no andar de cima — venha cá.

    please请qǐngstand站zhànup起来qǐ lái。

    Levante-se, por favor.

Lembre-se: 来 = em minha direção, 去 = longe de mim — ancorado onde quer que o falante esteja. 进来 ("entrem", estou dentro) vs 进去 ("entrem", estou fora).

    Cuidado

    • Com um objeto de lugar, o lugar fica entre o verbo e 来 / 去: 回美国去 / 回美国 — nunca 回去美国.
    12.2

    动词 + 得 / 不 + 结果 — complementos de potencial

    English

Slot 得 ("can") or 不 ("can't") between a verb and its result to ask whether that result is achievable — 看得懂 ("can understand") vs 看不懂 ("can't"). They're built straight from result complements (懂, 完, 到, 见…).

    Structure: Verb + 得 / 不 + Complement

    you你nǐhear听tīngcan得deunderstand懂dǒngShanghainese上海话Shàng hǎi huà吗ma?

    Can you understand Shanghainese?

this kind of这种zhè zhǒngphone手机shǒu jīnow现在xiàn zàibuy买mǎican't不bùget到dào了le。

You can't get this kind of phone any more.

Remember: 得 = can, 不 = can't, wedged right after the verb (做得好 / 做不好). It asks about reaching a result — subtly different from 能 ("be allowed / have the chance to").

    Watch out

    • The negative 不 form is far more common in speech than the 得 form — you'll hear 看不懂 constantly.
    Português

Slot 得 ("pode") ou 不 ("não pode") entre um verbo e seu complemento de resultado para perguntar se esse resultado é alcançável — 看得懂 ("pode entender") vs 看不懂 ("não pode"). Eles são construídos diretamente a partir de complementos de resultado (懂, 完, 到, 见…).

    Estrutura: Verb + 得 / 不 + Complement

    you你nǐhear听tīngcan得deunderstand懂dǒngShanghainese上海话Shàng hǎi huà吗ma?

    Você entende Shanghainês?

Lembre-se: 得 = pode, 不 = não pode, encaixados logo após o verbo (做得好 / 做不好). Pergunta sobre atingir um resultado — sutilmente diferente de 能 ("ter permissão / ter a oportunidade de").

    Cuidado

    • A forma negativa 不 é muito mais comum na fala do que a forma 得 — você ouvirá 看不懂 constantemente.
    12.3

    动词 + 下去 — "continuar …endo"

    English

The complement 下去 means carry on with something already under way — "keep …ing, go on …ing." Picture the action continuing downward and onward into the future.

Structure: Subject + Verb + 下去

    talk说shuōkeep on下去xià qù。

    Keep talking.

    you你nǐkeep再zàidrinking喝hēon下去xià qùthen就jiùdrunk醉zuì了le。

If you keep drinking, you'll get drunk.

Remember: 下去 = "carry on from here" with something already started. Its potential form 不下去 = "can't carry on": 我听不下去了 ("I can't bear to keep listening").

    Watch out

    • It's specifically about continuing — don't use it to start something.
    Português

O complemento 下去 significa continuar com algo já em andamento — "continue …endo, siga …endo." Imagine a ação continuando para baixo e para frente no futuro.

Estrutura: Subject + Verb + 下去

    talk说shuōkeep on下去xià qù。

    Continue falando.

    you你nǐkeep再zàidrinking喝hēon下去xià qùthen就jiùdrunk醉zuì了le。

Se você continuar bebendo, vai se embriagar.

Lembre-se: 下去 = "continuar daqui" com algo já iniciado. Sua forma potencial 不下去 = "não consigo continuar": 我听不下去了 ("Não consigo suportar continuar ouvindo").

    Cuidado

    • Refere-se especificamente a continuar — não use para iniciar algo.

    动词 + 好 / 完 / 错 — complementos de resultado

    English

A short word right after the verb tells you how it turned out — 完 ("finished"), 好 ("done well / ready"), 错 ("wrong"). It usually takes a 了, and the object is often pulled to the front as a topic.

    Structure: Verb + 好 / 完 / 错 (+ 了)

    this这个zhè gecharacter字zìwrote写xiěwrong错cuò了le。

    You wrote this character wrong.

    the room房间fáng jiāncleaned打扫dǎ sǎospotless干净gān jìng了le吗ma?

Is the room all cleaned up?

Remember: the verb is the action, the complement is the outcome. 写 = "write," but 写错 = "wrote wrong," 写完 = "wrote to the finish." Common ones: 完, 好, 错, 懂, 到, 见, 干净, 清楚.

    Watch out

    • Negate the whole thing with 没 (没写完, "didn't finish writing"), not 不.

as long as只要zhǐ yàoyou你nǐhard努力nǔ lìstudy学习xué xíthen,就jiùwill会huìmake有yǒuprogress进步jìn bù。

As long as you study hard, you'll make progress.

Whenever it rains, she's in a bad mood.

Remember: 只要 = "you only NEED…" (enough, maybe one of several ways); 只有 = "ONLY if…" (the sole way). 只要 pairs with 就; 只有 pairs with 才. The 一 vs the 才 is the tell — see 只有 below.

    Watch out

    • 只要 reaches for 就 ("then, immediately"); swapping in 才 quietly changes the meaning to "only if."
    Português

只要 … 就 … estabelece uma condição suficiente — "desde que A, (então) B." A por si só é suficiente para acionar B, mesmo que não seja a única rota para B. Leia 只要 como "você só precisa…" e 就 como "…então, imediatamente."

    Estrutura: 只要 + Condition ,就 + Result

as long as只要zhǐ yàoyou你nǐhard努力nǔ lìstudy学习xué xíthen,就jiùwill会huìmake有yǒuprogress进步jìn bù。

    …… ,才 …… — "somente então, apenas depois"

    English

才 between two clauses says the second happened only after / only because of the first — usually after real time, money, or effort was spent. English: "not until …, only after …."

    Structure: Condition ,才 + Result

that book那本书nà běn shūI我wǒread看kàn了letwice两遍liǎng biànonly then才cáiunderstood it看懂kàn dǒng。

She didn't go to bed until she'd finished her homework.

Remember: 才 spotlights "how much it took" before the result came — two readings, lots of effort, a late hour. The result clause usually ends in a result complement (看懂, 买到), reporting what was finally achieved.

    Watch out

    • This 才 takes no 了 on its verb — the effort, not a tidy completion, is the point.
    Português

才 entre duas orações diz que a segunda aconteceu somente depois / apenas devido à primeira — geralmente depois que tempo real, dinheiro ou esforço foi gasto. Inglês: "not until …, only after …."

    Estrutura: Condition ,才 + Result

that book那本书nà běn shūI我wǒread看kàn了letwice两遍liǎng biànonly then才cáiunderstood it看懂kàn dǒng。

Só entendi aquele livro depois de lê-lo duas vezes.

she她tāfinished做完zuò wán了lehomework功课gōng kèonly then才cáiwent to bed睡觉shuì jiào。

Ela não foi dormir até terminar a lição de casa.

Lembre-se: 才 destaca "o quanto foi necessário" antes do resultado chegar — duas leituras, muito esforço, uma hora tarde. A oração do resultado geralmente termina com um complemento de resultado (看懂, 买到), relatando o que foi finalmente alcançado.

    Cuidado

    • Este 才 não leva 了 em seu verbo — o esforço, não uma conclusão limpa, é o ponto.
    13.3

    Watch out

    • 才 here very often carries 能: 只有…才能….
    Português

    半 — "metade" (e onde fica)

    English

The word 半 means "half." The only thing to master is where it sits relative to the measure word, and it follows one clean rule: "half a [unit]" puts 半 first; "[X] and a half" puts 半 after the measure word — exactly where the fraction lands in the English too.

    Structure: 半 + Measure Word + Noun (half a …) · Number + Measure Word + 半 + Noun (X and a half)

    half a半个bàn gehour小时xiǎo shí

    half an hour

    half a bottle of半瓶bàn píngwine酒jiǔ

    half a bottle of wine

    three三个sān geand a half半bànhours小时xiǎo shí

    three and a half hours

Remember: 半 mirrors English word order. "Half an hour" → 半 first (半个小时); "three and a half hours" → 半 after the measure word (三个半小时). Say the English and 半 lands in the same spot.

    Watch out

    • 天 and 年 are themselves measure words — use no 个: 半天 ✓ (not 半个天), 半年 ✓.
    Português

A palavra 半 significa "metade." A única coisa a dominar é onde fica em relação ao classificador, e segue uma regra clara: "metade de [unidade]" coloca 半 primeiro; "[X] e meia" coloca 半 depois do classificador — exatamente onde a fração cai no inglês também.

    Estrutura: 半 + Measure Word + Noun (metade de …) · Number + Measure Word + 半 + Noun (X e meia)

    half a半个bàn gehour小时xiǎo shí

    meia hora

    half a bottle of半瓶bàn píngwine酒jiǔ

    meia garrafa de vinho

    three三个sān geand a half半bànhours小时xiǎo shí

Lembre-se: 半 espelha a ordem das palavras inglesa. "Half an hour" → 半 primeiro (半个小时); "three and a half hours" → 半 depois do classificador (三个半小时). Diga o inglês e 半 pousará no mesmo lugar.

    一 + 量词 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 … — "nem um só"

    English

To say not a single one, build a total, emphatic negative: 一 + measure word (+ noun) + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + verb. The 也 / 都 is the muscle here — it's what turns "one" into "not even one." The object can also be pulled to the front as a topic.

    Structure: (Topic +) 一 + MW + (Noun) + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Verb

    he他tāa single一句yí jùword话huàeven都dōudidn't没méisay说shuō。

He didn't say a single word.

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒeven once一次yí cìeven也yěhaven't没méimet见过jiàn guo。

I've never met this person, not even once.

Remember: the shape is "one … not even …" — 一 sets up the smallest possible amount, and 也 / 都 + negative knocks even that out. Drop the 也 / 都 and the "not even" force collapses.

    Watch out

    • 也 and 都 are interchangeable here; for an uncountable "not at all," use 一点也不.
    Português

    Para dizer nenhum único, construa uma negação total e enfática: 一 + classificador (+ substantivo) + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + verbo. O 也 / 这里是 o músculo aqui — é o que transforma "um" em "nem mesmo um." O objeto também pode ser movido para a frente como tópico.

    Estrutura: (Topic +) 一 + MW + (Noun) + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Verb

    he他tāa single一句yí jùword话huàeven都dōudidn't没méisay说shuō。

    Lembre-se: o formato é "um … nem mesmo …" — 一 estabelece a menor quantidade possível, e 也 / 都 + negativo derruba essa também. Remova o 也 / 都 e a força de "nem mesmo" colapsa.

    Cuidado

    • 也 e 都 são intercambiáveis aqui; para um "nem um pouco" incontável, use 一点也不.

    越 … 越 … — "quanto mais … mais …"

    English

越 A 越 B ties two things that rise together — "the more A, the more B." Picture two dials geared to the same shaft: turn one up and the other climbs with it. Both halves take 越, and the two clauses can even have different subjects.

    Structure: Subject + 越 + Verb + 越 + Adjective / Verb

The more you push the kid to study, the less he wants to.

Remember: two 越's, rising together. Don't confuse it with 越来越 ("more and more over time," next file): 越…越… links two things, 越来越 tracks one thing across time.

    Watch out

    • Both halves need 越; the second names what grows as the first does.
    • The two halves can have different subjects: 你越说,他越不听.
    Português

越 A 越 B liga duas coisas que subem juntas — "quanto mais A, mais B." Imagine dois botões engrenados no mesmo eixo: gire um para cima e o outro sobe junto. Ambas as metades levam 越, e as duas orações podem até ter sujeitos diferentes.

    Estrutura: Subject + 越 + Verb + 越 + Adjective / Verb

    I我wǒthe more越yuèlook看kànthe more越yuèlike it喜欢xǐ huan。

Quanto mais eu olho, mais eu gosto.

you你nǐthe more越yuèpush让ràngthe kid孩子hái zito study学xuéthe kid,孩子hái zithe less越yuèwants to不想bù xiǎngstudy学xué。

(a construção 把)

    English

Chinese grammar's famous hurdle — but the core idea is simple. 把 literally means "take / grab," so a 把 sentence is just "take [this specific thing] and [do something] to it." Reach for it when you want to spotlight what happens to an object — where it ends up, how it's changed, what's done with it.

The trap for English speakers: the object jumps in front of the verb, and the verb can never stand alone — it must be followed by the result (a complement, 了, a location…). "把书放" lands on a Chinese ear like "put the book…" and then trailing off.

    Structure: Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + (result) Literally: "I — take — the book — put — on the table." (我把书放在桌子上。)

    please请qǐng把bǎthe door门ménclose关上guān shàng。

    Please close the door.

    she她tā把bǎmy我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīput放fàngin在zàiher bag包里bāo lǐ了le。

She put my phone in her bag.

Remember: 把 carries the hand radical 扌 — picture a hand reaching out, grabbing the object, and dragging it in front of the verb. Grab it → then say what you did to it.

    Watch out

    • The object must be specific / known (the door, my phone), and the verb must report what happened to it — a bare verb won't do: 把书放在桌子上 ✓.
    • Negation goes before 把: 别把它扔了, 没把作业做完 — never inside the 把 phrase.
    • Feeling / perception verbs (喜欢, 想, 看见, 听) can't take 把 — there's no "result" to a feeling.
    • (把 is also a measure word for handled things — 一把伞 "an umbrella" — a different word entirely.)

    Estrutura: Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + (result) Literalmente: "Eu — peguei — o livro — coloquei — na mesa." (我把书放在桌子上。)

    please请qǐng把bǎthe door门ménclose关上guān shàng。

    Por favor, feche a porta.

    she她tā把bǎmy我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīput放fàngin在zàiher bag包里bāo lǐ了le。

Ela colocou meu telefone na bolsa dela.

Lembre-se: 把 carrega o radical da mão 扌 — imagine uma mão se estendendo, agarrando o objeto e arrastando-o para a frente do verbo. Agarre-o → depois diga o que fez com ele.

    Cuidado

    • O objeto deve ser específico / conhecido (a porta, meu telefone), e o verbo deve relatar o que aconteceu com ele — um verbo nu não serve: 把书放在桌子上 ✓.
    • A negação vai antes de 把: 别把它扔了, 没把作业做完 — nunca dentro da frase 把.
    • Verbos de sensação/percepção (喜欢, 想, 看见, 听) não podem levar 把 — não há "resultado" em uma sensação.
    • (把 também é um classificador para coisas com cabo — 一把伞 "um guarda-chuva" — uma palavra totalmente diferente.)
    16.4

    被 — "sofrer ação" (a voz passiva)

    English

A 被 sentence flips the focus to the receiver: "(it) got …ed (by …)." The thing acted upon becomes the subject, and the doer is optional. Like 把, the verb can't stand bare — it needs a result — and 被 sentences lean toward unfortunate events (things done to you).

    Structure: Receiver + 被 + (Doer) + Verb + (了 / result)

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīgot被bèistolen偷tōu了le。

    My phone got stolen.

    he他tāby被bèithe police警察jǐng chácaught抓zhuā了le。

He was caught by the police.

Remember: 把 leads with the doer, 被 leads with the victim. 小偷把手机偷了 ("the thief took the phone") ↔ 手机被小偷偷了 ("the phone got taken by the thief"). 被 even hides 衣 (a quilt/cover) — picture the action laid over the subject.

    Watch out

    • The verb can't be bare — it needs a 了 or result: 咖啡被我喝完了 ✓, not 咖啡被我喝.
    • The doer is optional: 我被骗了 ("I was tricked"), doer unknown or unimportant.
    • Negate before 被: 没被发现 ("wasn't discovered").
    • These sentences usually report something bad happening to the subject.
    Português

Uma frase 被 inverte o foco para o receptor: "(isso) foi …-ado (por …)." A coisa sobre a qual a ação recai torna-se o sujeito, e o agente é opcional. Assim como 把, o verbo não pode ficar nu — precisa de um resultado, e frases 被 tendem a eventos desfavoráveis (coisas feitas contra você).

    Estrutura: Receiver + 被 + (Doer) + Verb + (了 / result)

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīgot被bèistolen偷tōu了le。

    Meu telefone foi roubado.

    he他tāby被bèithe police警察jǐng chácaught抓zhuā了le。

    • Essas frases geralmente reportam algo ruim acontecendo com o sujeito.

    Lugar + Verbo + 着 + Substantivo — dizendo o que está onde

    English

To paint what is where, Chinese runs place — verb — 着 — thing: "(at the place) there sits / lies / hangs a …." The verb tells you how the thing is positioned (lying, standing, hanging). A close cousin is Place + 是 + thing, meaning "all there is at the place is …."

    Structure: Place + Verb + 着 + Noun Phrase

on the table桌子上zhuō zi shànglies放fàng着zhea一本yì běnbook书shū。

There's a book lying on the table.

in the hall大厅里dà tīng lǐare standing站zhàn着zhesome一些yì xiēpolice警察jǐng chá。

Some police are standing in the hall.

Remember: the place comes first (the camera pans to a spot), then the verb + 着 freezes how the thing sits there. English starts with "there's a …"; Chinese starts with the location.

    Watch out

    • The verb is stative (放, 站, 坐, 挂) — it describes a position, not an active action.
    • The 是 version says the place holds only that: 墙上都是照片 ("the wall is all photos").
    Português

    Para pintar o que está onde, o chinês usa lugar — verbo — 着 — coisa: "(no lugar) aí está / jaz / pendura um …". O verbo diz como a coisa está posicionada (deitada, em pé, pendurada). Um primo próximo é Place + 是 + thing, significando "tudo o que há no lugar é …"}

    Estrutura: Place + Verb + 着 + Noun Phrase

on the table桌子上zhuō zi shànglies放fàng着zhea一本yì běnbook书shū。

Há um livro deitado sobre a mesa.

in the hall大厅里dà tīng lǐare standing站zhàn着zhesome一些yì xiēpolice警察jǐng chá。

Alguns policiais estão em pé no saguão.

Lembre-se: o lugar vem primeiro (a câmera foca em um local), depois o verbo + 着 congela como a coisa se encontra ali. O inglês começa com "there's a …"; o chinês começa com a localização.

    Cuidado

    • O verbo é estativo (放, 站, 坐, 挂) — descreve uma posição, não uma ação ativa.
    • A versão 是 diz que o lugar contém apenas aquilo: 墙上都是照片 ("a parede está toda de fotos").

    想 + 疑问词 + 就 + 疑问词 — "faça o que quiser"

    English

Echo a question word on both sides of 就 and you get "(do) whatever / wherever / whenever you like." The same question word appears twice — once setting the choice, once cashing it in.

    Structure: 想 + Verb + QW + 就 + Verb + QW

    want想xiǎngeat吃chīwhat什么shén methen就jiùeat吃chīwhatever什么shén me。

    Eat whatever you want.

    want想xiǎnggo去qùwhere哪儿nǎrthen就jiùgo去qùwherever哪儿nǎr。

    Go wherever you like.

Remember: the same question word both times — 什么…就…什么, 谁…就…谁, 哪儿…就…哪儿. Read it as "whatever you pick, that's what you get." It's the language of total freedom.

    Watch out

    • Keep the question word identical on both sides — mixing 什么 with 哪儿 breaks it.
    Português

Repetir uma palavra interrogativa de ambos os lados de 就 resulta em "(faça) o que / onde / quando quiser." A mesma palavra interrogativa aparece duas vezes — uma definindo a escolha, outra concretizando-a.

    Estrutura: 想 + Verb + QW + 就 + Verb + QW

    want想xiǎngeat吃chīwhat什么shén methen就jiùeat吃chīwhatever什么shén me。

    Coma o que quiser.

    want想xiǎnggo去qùwhere哪儿nǎrthen就jiùgo去qùwherever哪儿nǎr。

    Vá para onde quiser.

Lembre-se: a mesma palavra interrogativa ambas as vezes — 什么…就…什么, 谁…就…谁, 哪儿…就…哪儿. Leia como "o que você escolher, isso será o que terá." É a linguagem da liberdade total.

    Cuidado

    • Mantenha a palavra interrogativa idêntica dos dois lados — misturar 什么 com 哪儿 quebra a estrutura.
    17.3

    疑问词 + 都 / 也 — "todo / qualquer"

    English

A question word + 都 (or 也) sweeps over all cases — "everyone, anything, anywhere." Add a 不 / 没 and it flips to the total negative: "none, nothing, nowhere."

    Structure: Question Word + 都 / 也 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéiall都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    Everyone loves good food.

    I我wǒanything什么shén meat all都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto eat吃chī。

I don't want to eat anything.

Remember: question word + 都 = "all / every"; add 不 / 没 = "none / nothing." 谁都喜欢 ("everyone likes") → 谁都不信 ("nobody believes"). 也 stands in for 都, especially in negatives (什么也没说, "said nothing").

    Watch out

    • The question word here is not asking anything — it's the indefinite "any," swept up by 都 / 也.
    Português

Uma palavra interrogativa + 都 (ou 也) abrange todos os casos — "todo mundo, qualquer coisa, qualquer lugar." Adicione 不 / 没 e ela inverte para o negativo total: "nenhum, nada, lugar nenhum."

    Estrutura: Question Word + 都 / 也 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéiall都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    Todo mundo ama boa comida.

    I我wǒanything什么shén meat all都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto eat吃chī。

    Não quero comer nenhuma coisa.

Lembre-se: palavra interrogativa + 都 = "todo / todo"; adicione 不 / 没 = "nenhum / nada." 谁都喜欢 ("todo mundo gosta") → 谁都不信 ("ninguém acredita"). 也 substitui 都, especialmente em negativas (什么也没说, "não disse nada").

    Cuidado

    • A palavra interrogativa aqui não está perguntando nada — é o indefinido "qualquer", engolido por 都 / 也.
    17.4

越来越 + 形容词 — "cada vez mais"

    English

越来越 before an adjective (or verb) means a quality keeps climbing as time passes — "more and more …." Literally "more-comes-more." It usually closes with 了 to mark the change in motion.

    Structure: Subject + 越来越 + Adjective + 了

the weather天气tiān qìmore and more越来越yuè lái yuècold冷lěng了le。

The weather is getting colder and colder.

I我wǒmore and more越来越yuè lái yuèdon't不bùtrust相信xiāng xìnhim他tā了le。

I trust him less and less.

Remember: 越来越 = "more-comes-more" — one thing changing over time. Its look-alike 越…越… (previous file) links two things ("the more A, the more B"). Time → 越来越; pairing → 越…越….

    Watch out

    • With a negative verb, English flips to "less and less": 越来越不懂 ("understand less and less").
    Português

越来越 antes de um adjetivo (ou verbo) significa que uma qualidade continua subindo à medida que o tempo passa — "cada vez mais ...." Literalmente "mais-vem-mais." Geralmente termina com 了 para marcar a mudança de movimento.

    Estrutura: Subject + 越来越 + Adjective + 了

the weather天气tiān qìmore and more越来越yuè lái yuècold冷lěng了le。

O clima está ficando cada vez mais frio.

I我wǒmore and more越来越yuè lái yuèdon't不bùtrust相信xiāng xìnhim他tā了le。

    Confio nele cada vez menos.

Lembre-se: 越来越 = "mais-vem-mais" — uma coisa mudando ao longo do tempo. Seu homônimo 越…越… (arquivo anterior) liga duas coisas ("quanto mais A, quanto mais B"). Tempo → 越来越; pareamento → 越…越….

    Cuidado

    • Com um verbo negativo, o inglês vira "cada vez menos": 越来越不懂 ("entendo cada vez menos").
    17.5

    疑问词 — "algum / certo"

    English

A bare question word can quietly mean a vague "some / a certain" — 哪儿 ("somewhere"), 谁 ("someone"), 什么 ("something"), 什么时候 ("sometime"). It isn't a question at all; tone and small cues (过, 点儿, 吧) flag the difference.

Structure: Question Word (used as "some")

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒ在zàisomewhere哪儿nǎrhave met见过jiàn guo。

I've met this person somewhere before.

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāido做zuòa bit of点儿diǎnrsomething什么shén me。

    We should do something.

Remember: a question word with no rising "question" tone = "some." 谁 ("who?") vs 谁 ("someone"); 什么 ("what?") vs 什么 ("something"). Cues like 过, 点儿, or 吧 confirm the "some" reading — 什么时候…吧 = "sometime," not "when?".

    Watch out

    • Context does the work — there's no extra word; only the falling tone and the cues distinguish "some" from a real question.
    Português

Uma palavra interrogativa nua pode significar discretamente um vago "algum / certo" — 哪儿 ("num lugar"), 谁 ("alguém"), 什么 ("algo"), 什么时候 ("num momento"). Não é uma pergunta; o tom e pequenos indícios (过, 点儿, 吧) marcam a diferença.

Estrutura: Question Word (used as "some")

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒ在zàisomewhere哪儿nǎrhave met见过jiàn guo。

Já conheci essa pessoa num lugar antes.

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāido做zuòa bit of点儿diǎnrsomething什么shén me。

    Devíamos fazer alguma coisa.

Lembre-se: palavra interrogativa sem tom ascendente de "pergunta" = "algum." 谁 ("quem?") vs 谁 ("alguém"); 什么 ("o quê?") vs 什么 ("algo"). Indícios como 过, 点儿 ou 吧 confirmam a leitura "algum" — 什么时候…吧 = "num momento", não "quando?".

    Cuidado

    • O contexto faz o trabalho — não há palavra extra; apenas o tom descendente e os indícios distinguem "algum" de uma pergunta real.
    17.6

    为了 — "para / a fim de"

    English

为了 spells out a purpose or beneficiary — "in order to, for the sake of." It usually opens the sentence ("In order to X, …"), or appears as "… 是为了 …" ("the reason is to …").

Structure: 为了 + Purpose ,Subject + Action · Action + 是为了 + Purpose

for the sake of为了wèi lemoney钱qiánhe,他tāanything什么shén meat all都dōuis willing愿意yuàn yìto do做zuò。

    For money, he'll do anything.

I我wǒ这么zhè medid this做zuò是shìin order to为了wèi lehelp帮bāngyou你nǐ。

I did all this in order to help you.

Remember: 为了 = the goal you're aiming AT (forward-looking); 因为 = the cause you're coming FROM (backward-looking). "为了 health, I exercise" (purpose) vs "因为 I'm ill, I rest" (reason). The 了 here is glued into the word — not the aspect particle.

    Watch out

    • The 为了 phrase usually sits at the front of the sentence.
    Português

为了 expressa um propósito ou beneficiário — "para, a fim de." Geralmente abre a frase ("A fim de X, …"), ou aparece como "… 是为了 …" ("o motivo é …").

Estrutura: 为了 + Purpose ,Subject + Action · Action + 是为了 + Purpose

for the sake of为了wèi lemoney钱qiánhe,他tāanything什么shén meat all都dōuis willing愿意yuàn yìto do做zuò。

Por dinheiro, ele faria qualquer coisa.

I我wǒ这么zhè medid this做zuò是shìin order to为了wèi lehelp帮bāngyou你nǐ。

Fiz tudo isso para te ajudar.

Lembre-se: 为了 = o objetivo que você mira (olhando para frente); 因为 = a causa de onde você parte (olhando para trás). "Para saúde, eu me exercito" (propósito) vs "porque estou doente, descanso" (motivo). O 了 aqui está colado na palavra — não é partícula de aspecto.

    Cuidado

    • A frase 为了 geralmente fica na parte frontal da oração.

    跟 … 比(起来) — "comparado com"

    English

To lead with a comparison, open with 跟 A 比(起来), then comment on B — "compared with A, B is …." It sets the yardstick first, then makes the point. (跟 ≈ 和 here; 跟 is slightly more common.) B can also start the sentence.

    Structure: 跟 + A + 比(起来) ,B + Comment

    compared with跟gēnShanghai上海Shàng hǎi比bǐmy,我wǒhometown老家lǎo jiā的deprices物价wù jiàvery很hěnlow低dī。

Compared with Shanghai, prices in my hometown are very low.

Compared with her elder sister, the younger one is a bit shy.

Remember: 跟 A 比 = "holding it up against A…" — the benchmark first, the verdict second. Note that unlike a bare 比 sentence, this framing allows 很 (物价很低), because it's a comment, not a direct A-比-B.

    Watch out

    • For a plain "A is more X than B," the basic 比 is enough: A比B高.
    Português

    Para começar com uma comparação, abra com 跟 A 比(起来), depois comente sobre B — "comparado com A, B é ...." Estabelece a régua primeiro, depois faz o ponto. (跟 ≈ 和 aqui; 跟 é ligeiramente mais comum.) B também pode começar a frase.

    Estrutura: 跟 + A + 比(起来) ,B + Comment

    compared with跟gēnShanghai上海Shàng hǎi比bǐmy,我wǒhometown老家lǎo jiā的deprices物价wù jiàvery很hěnlow低dī。

Comparada com sua irmã mais velha, a mais nova é um pouco tímida.

Lembre-se: 跟 A 比 = "segurando-o contra A…" — o marco de referência primeiro, o veredito segundo. Note que, diferentemente de uma oração 比 nua, este enquadramento permite 很 (物价很低), pois é um comentário, não um A-比-B direto.

    Cuidado

    • Para um simples "A é mais X que B", o 比 básico basta: A比B高.
    18.2

    比 … 更 / 还 — "ainda mais"

    English

In a 比 comparison, drop 更 or 还 before the adjective to mean the first thing is even more so — often with a sly hint that "(B is already very …, and A beats it)."

    Structure: Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + 更 / 还 + Adjective

Remember: 更 / 还 = "even more." 还 especially smuggles in "(and the other is already sky-high)" — 比姚明还高 quietly admits Yao Ming is already a giant. Crucial rule: a 比 sentence never takes 很 / 非常 — degree comes from 更 / 还 / 多了.

    Watch out

    • 比 + 很 is a classic mistake: say 比他高 or 比他更高, never 比他很高.
    Português

Em uma comparação 比, remova 更 ou 还 antes do adjetivo para significar que a primeira coisa é ainda mais assim — muitas vezes com uma sutil sugestão de que "(B já é muito …, e A supera)".

    Estrutura: Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + 更 / 还 + Adjective

    Lembre-se: 更 / 还 = "ainda mais." 还 especialmente insinua "(e o outro já está altíssimo)" — 比姚明还高 admite silenciosamente que Yao Ming já é um gigante. Regra crucial: uma oração 比 nunca leva 很 / 非常 — o grau vem de 更 / 还 / 多了.

Remember: size the gap at the end: big gap → 多了 / 得多 / 很多; small gap → 一点 (容易一点, "a little easier"). And, again, never 很 / 非常 inside a 比 sentence.

    Watch out

    • 多了 / 得多 / 很多 all sit after the adjective: 高多了, 高得多 — never 多了高.
    Português

Para enfatizar uma grande diferença, feche uma comparação 比 com 多了 (ou 得多 / 很多) — "muito mais ...." 多了 também funciona sozinho: 好多了 ("muito melhor").

    A + 有 + B + 形容词 + 吗? — "tão … quanto?"

    English

有 can do more than "have" — in a comparison it means "as … as": "A 有 B + Adj" = "A is as [Adj] as B." It lives mostly in questions, where B is the benchmark you're measuring against, often with 这么 / 那么.

    Structure: A + 有 + B + (这么 / 那么) + Adjective + 吗?

    he他tāas有yǒume我wǒhandsome帅shuài吗ma?

Is he as handsome as me?

    he他tāas有yǒuYao Ming姚明Yáo Míngthat那么nà metall高gāo吗ma?

Remember: 有 = "reaches as far as" (as … as); 没有 = "falls short of" (not as … as). The question 有…吗? asks "does A measure up to B?"; the answer is 有 / 没有 (没有你帅, "not as handsome as you").

    Watch out

    • Used mainly in questions and negatives, not plain statements. For a plain statement use 跟…一样 ("the same as") or 比 ("more than").
    Português

有 pode fazer mais que "ter" — numa comparação significa "tão … quanto": "A 有 B + Adj" = "A é tão [Adj] quanto B." Aparece principalmente em perguntas, onde B é a referência contra a qual você mede, frequentemente com 这么 / 那么.

    Estrutura: A + 有 + B + (这么 / 那么) + Adjective + 吗?

    he他tāas有yǒume我wǒhandsome帅shuài吗ma?

Ele é tão bonito quanto eu?

    he他tāas有yǒuYao Ming姚明Yáo Míngthat那么nà metall高gāo吗ma?

if如果rú guǒtomorrow明天míng tiānrains下雨xià yǔ的话de huàwe,我们wǒ menthen就jiùnot不bùgo去qù了le。

If it rains tomorrow, we won't go.

    not不bùwant to想xiǎnggo去qùif的话de huàthen就jiùdon't别biégo去qù了le。

If you don't feel like going, then don't.

Remember: 如果 and 的话 are a pair of brackets around the condition — and Chinese lets you use either or both. You can even drop both and just imply the "if": 有事给我打电话 ("call me if anything comes up").

    Watch out

    • 的话 is conversational — fine to drop it and keep just 如果 … 就 ….
    Português

如果 … 的话 envolve uma condição — "se ...." Pense em 的话 como um parêntese falado que fecha a oração condicional se: 如果 a abre, 的话 a fecha. O 的话 é conversacional e opcional — e pode aparecer mesmo sem 如果.

    Estrutura: 如果 + Condition + 的话 ,(就) + Result

if如果rú guǒtomorrow明天míng tiānrains下雨xià yǔ的话de huàwe,我们wǒ menthen就jiùnot不bùgo去qù了le。

    Se chover amanhã, não iremos.

    not不bùwant to想xiǎnggo去qùif的话de huàthen就jiùdon't别biégo去qù了le。

Se não tiver vontade de ir, então não vá.

Lembre-se: 如果 e 的话 formam um par de parênteses ao redor da condição — e o chinês permite usar um ou ambos. Você pode até remover ambos e apenas implicar o "se": 有事给我打电话 ("me ligue se surgir algo").

    Cuidado

    • 的话 é conversacional — tudo bem removê-lo e manter apenas 如果 … 就 ….
    19.3

    如果 … 就 … — "se … então …"

    English

The backbone conditional is 如果 … 就 … — "if A, then B." The key placement rule: 就 lives in the second clause, opening the result — not next to 如果.

    Structure: 如果 + Condition ,就 + Result

    if如果rú guǒhave有yǒudifficulty困难kùn nánthen,就jiù给gěime我wǒcall打电话dǎ diàn huà。

If you run into any trouble, then call me.

    if如果rú guǒhe他tāknew知道zhī dàothen,那nàhe他tāsurely一定yí dìngwould会huìtell告诉gào sume我wǒ。

If he knew, he'd surely tell me.

Remember: 如果 opens the "if," 就 opens the "then" — and 就 always rides with the result, hugging its verb. 那(么) can stand in for 就 with an "in that case" flavour.

    Watch out

    • Don't park 就 next to 如果 — it belongs in the second clause, before its verb.
    Português

A estrutura condicional base é 如果 … 就 … — "se A, então B." A regra principal de posicionamento: 就 vive na segunda oração, abrindo o resultado — não ao lado de 如果.

    Estrutura: 如果 + Condition ,就 + Result

    if如果rú guǒhave有yǒudifficulty困难kùn nánthen,就jiù给gěime我wǒcall打电话dǎ diàn huà。

Se encontrar algum problema, então me ligue.

    if如果rú guǒhe他tāknew知道zhī dàothen,那nàhe他tāsurely一定yí dìngwould会huìtell告诉gào sume我wǒ。

Se ele soubesse, certamente me contaria.

Lembre-se: 如果 abre o "se," 就 abre o "então" — e 就 sempre acompanha o resultado, abraçando seu verbo. 那(么) pode substituir 就 com um sabor de "neste caso".

    Cuidado

    • Não estacione 就 ao lado de 如果 — ele pertence à segunda oração, antes de seu verbo.
    19.4

    不但 … 而且 … — "não só … mas também …"

    English

不但 … 而且 … stacks a second, stronger point on the first — "not only A, but also B." The two halves share the same subject, and B should push further than A (more extreme, more surprising).

    Structure: Subject + 不但 + A ,而且 + B

this这个zhè gething东西dōng xinot only不但bú dànexpensive贵guìbut also,而且ér qiěhard难nánto buy买mǎi。

This thing is not only expensive, but also hard to get.

this这道zhè dàodish菜càinot only不但bú dànpretty好看hǎo kànalso,也yětasty好吃hǎo chī。

This dish isn't only pretty, it's tasty too.

    Remember: 不但 = "not only," 而且 = "but also," and B must out-do A (escalate, don't just repeat). 而且 swaps freely for 也 / 还: 不但…也…, 不但…还….

    Watch out

    • Keep one subject across both halves (他不但…,而且…); if the subject changes, 不但 moves in front of the subject (不但他来了,而且…).
    Português

不但 … 而且 … empilha um segundo ponto, mais forte, sobre o primeiro — "não só A, mas também B." As duas metades compartilham o mesmo sujeito, e B deve ir mais longe que A (mais extremo, mais surpreendente).

    Estrutura: Subject + 不但 + A ,而且 + B

this这个zhè gething东西dōng xinot only不但bú dànexpensive贵guìbut also,而且ér qiěhard难nánto buy买mǎi。

Esta coisa não só é cara, como também difícil de conseguir.

Este prato não só é bonito, é bom também.

    Lembre-se: 不但 = "não só," 而且 = "mas também," e B deve superar A (escalar, não apenas repetir). 而且 troca livremente por 也 / 还: 不但…也…, 不但…还….

    Cuidado

    • Mantenha um único sujeito nas duas metades (他不但…,而且…); se o sujeito mudar, 不但 vai na frente do sujeito (不但他来了,而且…).

    才 vs 就 — "tarde / difícil" vs "cedo / fácil"

    English

These two adverbs are a matched pair pulling in opposite directions. Both sit before the verb after a time or condition, but 才 says something happened later or with more effort than expected (often a touch impatient), while 就 says it happened sooner or more easily than expected.

the boss老板lǎo bǎneleven十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáiarrived到dào。

The boss didn't get in until eleven.

    he他tāsix六点liù diǎnalready就jiùarrived到dào了le。

He was already here by six.

Remember: 才 drags late (no 了); 就 jumps early (+ 了). A neat tell: the 了 lines up with 就 ("already happened, 就到了") and avoids 才 ("late, nothing tidily completed, 才到").

    Watch out

    • 才 = slower / later / harder than expected (sometimes annoyed); 就 = faster / earlier / easier.
    • The verb after 才 takes no 了; 就 in the "already" sense usually does.
    Português

Estes dois advérbios formam um par oposto puxando em direções contrárias. Ambos aparecem antes do verbo após um tempo ou condição, mas 才 indica que algo aconteceu mais tarde ou com mais esforço do que o esperado (geralmente com leve impaciência), enquanto 就 indica que aconteceu mais cedo ou mais facilmente do que o esperado.

the boss老板lǎo bǎneleven十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáiarrived到dào。

O chefe só entrou às onze.

    he他tāsix六点liù diǎnalready就jiùarrived到dào了le。

Ele já estava aqui pelas seis.

Lembre-se: 才 atrasa (sem 了); 就 antecipa (+ 了). Uma dica clara: o 了 alinha-se com 就 ("já aconteceu, 就到了") e evita 才 ("tarde, nada concluído de forma limpa, 才到").

    Cuidado

    • 才 = mais lento / mais tarde / mais difícil do que o esperado (por vezes irritado); 就 = mais rápido / mais cedo / mais fácil.
    • O verbo após 才 não leva 了; 就 no sentido de "já" geralmente leva.
    20.2

刚 vs 刚才 — advérbio vs palavra temporal

    English

Same "just," two different word-classes. 刚 is an adverb ("just," sitting right before the verb); 刚才 is a time noun ("a moment ago," roughly the last 1–30 minutes) that can stand on its own and even modify a noun.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnjust刚gāngleft走zǒu。

    The boss just left.

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    What did you just say?

Remember: 刚 = adverb, glued to the verb (刚到); 刚才 = noun, free-standing (刚才的事, "the thing just now"). 刚 often skips 了 when the verb already carries a result; 刚才 is firmly past and pairs with 了.

    Watch out

    • Before an adjective, only 刚 / 刚刚 works: 天刚晴 ("the sky just cleared") — never 刚才晴.
    Português

Mesmo "just", duas classes de palavras diferentes. 刚 é um advérbio ("just", posicionado imediatamente antes do verbo); 刚才 é um substantivo temporal ("há um momento", aproximadamente os últimos 1–30 minutos) que pode funcionar sozinho e até modificar um substantivo.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnjust刚gāngleft走zǒu。

    O chefe acabou de sair.

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

O que você disse há pouco?

Lembre-se: 刚 = advérbio, colado ao verbo (刚到); 刚才 = substantivo, independente (刚才的事, "a coisa de agora há pouco"). 刚 frequentemente omite 了 quando o verbo já carrega um resultado; 坚决mente está no passado e combina com 了.

    Cuidado

    • Antes de um adjetivo, apenas 刚 / 刚刚 funciona: 天刚晴 ("o céu acabou de limpar") — nunca 刚才晴.
    20.3

有点 vs 一点 — "um pouco demais" vs "um pouco (mais)"

    English

Both translate as "a bit," but they sit on opposite sides of the adjective and carry opposite moods. 有点(儿) goes before an adjective with a hint of complaint ("a bit too …"); 一点(儿) goes after an adjective to mark a small amount or degree (in comparisons or requests).

    today今天jīn tiānI'm我wǒa bit有点yǒu diǎntired累lèi。

    I'm a bit tired today.

    please请qǐngspeak说shuōslowly慢màna little一点yì diǎn。

Please speak a little more slowly.

Remember: 有点 + Adj = a grumble before ("a bit too tired"); Adj + 一点 = a measured amount after ("a little slower"). Position tells you the mood: before = complaint, after = neutral nudge.

    Watch out

    • 一点 + Noun = "a little (of)": 一点水, 一点钱 — 有点 can't do this.
    • 一点也不 / 一点也没 = "not at all": 一点也不辣.
    Português

Ambos se traduzem como "um pouco", mas ocupam lados opostos do adjetivo e carregam humor oposto. 有点(儿) vai antes de um adjetivo com um toque de reclamação ("um pouco demais …"); 一点(儿) vai depois de um adjetivo para marcar uma pequena quantidade ou grau (em comparações ou pedidos).

    today今天jīn tiānI'm我wǒa bit有点yǒu diǎntired累lèi。

    Estou um pouco cansado hoje.

    please请qǐngspeak说shuōslowly慢màna little一点yì diǎn。

    English

Both mean "again," but they split cleanly on time: 再 is "again" for something not yet done (a future or intended repeat); 又 is "again" for something that has already happened.

    welcome欢迎huān yíngagain再zàicome来lái!

    Come again!

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    You're late again.

Remember: 再 looks forward (plan/intend, no 了); 又 looks back (already repeated, usually + 了). 欢迎再来 (please come again) vs 你又来了 (here you are again). The 了 sides with 又.

    Watch out

    • 再 also means "another" (再来一个) and "(do A) then (B)" (先…再…); 又 also stacks qualities (又高又帅).
    Português

Ambos significam "again", mas dividem-se claramente quanto ao tempo: 再 é "again" para algo ainda não feito (uma repetição futura ou pretendida); 又 é "again" para algo que já aconteceu.

    welcome欢迎huān yíngagain再zàicome来lái!

    *Volte novamente!"

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    Você está atrasado de novo.

Lembre-se: 再 olha para frente (plano/intenção, sem 了); 又 olha para trás (já repetido, geralmente + 了). 欢迎再来 (por favor, volte novamente) vs 你又来了 (aqui você está de novo). O 了 acompanha 又.

    Cuidado

    • 再 também significa "outro" (再来一个) e "(faça A) então (B)" (先…再…); 又 também acumula qualidades (又高又帅).

还是 vs 或者 — "ou" em perguntas vs afirmações

    English

This is the single most-tested "or" distinction in Chinese, so make it automatic. Both words mean "or" and present a choice, but they split by sentence type: 还是 offers the choice in a question (you're asking someone to pick); 或者 lists alternatives in a statement (you're just telling).

    you你nǐdrink喝hētea茶cháor还是hái shìcoffee咖啡kā fēi?

Do you want tea or coffee?

    tea茶cháor或者huò zhěcoffee咖啡kā fēieither都dōuis fine行xíng。

Tea or coffee — either's fine.

    I我wǒdon't不bùknow知道zhī dàohe他tāsupports支持zhī chíor还是hái shìopposes反对fǎn duì。

I don't know whether he's for or against.

Remember: ? → 还是, . → 或者. Asking someone to choose takes 还是; stating open options takes 或者. And a hidden question — "I don't know whether A or B" — still counts as a question inside, so it keeps 还是.

    Watch out

    • That embedded-question case (不知道…还是…) trips people up — there's no question mark, but the choice is still being asked, so 还是 stays.
    Português

Esta é a distinção de "ou" mais cobrada em chinês, então torne-a automática. Ambas as palavras significam "ou" e apresentam uma escolha, mas dividem-se pelo tipo de frase: 还是 oferece a escolha em uma pergunta (você está perguntando a alguém para escolher); 或者 lista alternativas em uma afirmação (você está apenas informando).

    you你nǐdrink喝hētea茶cháor还是hái shìcoffee咖啡kā fēi?

    Quer chá ou café?

    tea茶cháor或者huò zhěcoffee咖啡kā fēieither都dōuis fine行xíng。

Chá ou café — tanto faz.

    I我wǒdon't不bùknow知道zhī dàohe他tāsupports支持zhī chíor还是hái shìopposes反对fǎn duì。

Não sei se ele é a favor ou contra.

Lembre-se: ? → 还是, . → 或者. Perguntar a alguém para escolher usa 还是; declarar opções abertas usa 或者. E uma pergunta oculta — "Não sei se A ou B" — ainda conta como uma pergunta interna, então mantém 还是.

    Cuidado

    • Esse caso de pergunta embutida (不知道…还是…) confunde as pessoas — não há ponto de interrogação, mas a escolha ainda está sendo perguntada, então 还是 permanece.

以后 vs 然后 vs 后来 — três tipos de "depois / então"

    English

All three brush against "after / then," but each owns a different slot — so the trick is to match the situation to the word:

    • 以后 — "after / from now on," and it can point to the future: 以后想开公司 ("I want to start a company someday").
    • 然后 — "and then," joining the next step in a sequence (any time frame): 先吃饭,然后看电影.
    • 后来 — "later, afterwards," narrating the next thing that happened — in the past only.

I我wǒin future以后yǐ hòuwant to想xiǎngstart开kāia company公司gōng sī。

I want to start a company someday.

first先xiāneat吃饭chī fànand then,然后rán hòuwatch看kàna film电影diàn yǐng。

Eat first, and then watch a film.

    later后来hòu láihe他tāwent去qù了lethe US美国Měi guó。

Later he went to the US.

Remember: the quick test — future → 以后, next step → 然后, past story → 后来. Only 后来 is locked to the past; 以后 can reach into the future, and 然后 chains steps in any time frame.

    Watch out

    • 以后 and 后来 can both translate as "later," but 后来 only narrates what has already happened — never a future "then."

I我wǒin future以后yǐ hòuwant to想xiǎngstart开kāia company公司gōng sī。

Quero abrir uma empresa algum dia.

first先xiāneat吃饭chī fànand then,然后rán hòuwatch看kàna film电影diàn yǐng。

Coma primeiro, e então assista a um filme.

    later后来hòu láihe他tāwent去qù了lethe US美国Měi guó。

Mais tarde ele foi para os EUA.

Lembre-se: o teste rápido — futuro → 以后, próximo passo → 然后, história passada → 后来. Apenas 后来 está travado no passado; 以后 pode alcançar o futuro, e 然后 encadeia passos em qualquer quadro temporal.

    Cuidado

    • 以后 e 后来 podem ambos ser traduzidos como "later", mas 后来 narra apenas o que já aconteceu — nunca um "then" futuro.
