    全 + Substantivo — "todo, inteiro"

    English

全 in front of a noun scoops up "the whole, entire" thing in one sweep. It bonds to a small set of "whole-able" nouns — 身 (body), 家 (family), 国 (country), 世界 (world), 校 (school), 年 (year) — and calls for a 都 in the predicate. The one rule to burn in: 全 takes no 的.

    Structure: 全 + Noun + 都 + Predicate

our我们wǒ menwhole family全家quán jiāall都dōuhave been to去过qù guoBeijing北京Běi jīng。

Our whole family has been to Beijing.

    this这个zhè geplace地方dì fangall year全年quán nián都dōuvery很hěnhot热rè。

This place is hot all year round.

Remember: 全 = the whole thing in one sweep — and never 的 (全家 ✓, 全的家 ✗). It almost always sends a 都 downstream to echo the "all."

    Watch out

    • It attaches only to "whole" nouns (身, 家, 国, 校, 年…).
    • Advanced flip: 全都不去 = "none go at all"; 不全都去 = "not all go" — where 不 sits changes everything.
    Português

全 na frente de um substantivo engole "the whole, entire" de uma vez. Ele se liga a um pequeno conjunto de substantivos "totalizáveis" — 身 (corpo), 家 (família), 国 (país), 世界 (mundo), 校 (escola), 年 (ano) — e exige um 都 no predicado. A regra única a gravar: 全 não leva 的.

    Estrutura: 全 + Noun + 都 + Predicate

our我们wǒ menwhole family全家quán jiāall都dōuhave been to去过qù guoBeijing北京Běi jīng。

Nossa família inteira já esteve em Pequim.

    this这个zhè geplace地方dì fangall year全年quán nián都dōuvery很hěnhot热rè。

Este lugar é quente o ano todo.

    Lembre-se: 全 = tudo de uma vez — e nunca 的 (全家 ✓, 全的家 ✗). Quase sempre envia um 都 a jusante para ecoar o "all".

    Cuidado

    • Liga-se apenas a substantivos "totais" (身, 家, 国, 校, 年…).
    • Flip avançado: 全都不去 = "nenhum vai de jeito nenhum"; 不全都去 = "nem todos vão" — onde 不 se senta muda tudo.
    1.2

    Adjetivo + 死了 — "… até a morte, extremamente"

    English

死了 after an adjective cranks it to the limit — "… to death, extremely." It's the exact match of English "scared to death," "bored to death": vivid, casual, and slanted toward unpleasant feelings. The subject is optional.

Structure: (Subject +) Adjective + 死了

    I'm我wǒhungry饿èto death死了sǐ le!

    I'm starving!

    today今天jīn tiāntired累lèito death死了sǐ le!

    I'm exhausted today!

    this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fuugly丑chǒuto death死了sǐ le。

    This outfit is hideous.

Remember: 死了 = English "…to death" (累死了 = "dead tired"). It's the drama-queen cousin of 极了 — louder, more informal, mostly for misery (累, 饿, 热, 丑) — and it attaches bare, no 得.

    Watch out

    • Reach for it when the feeling is bad and you want to exaggerate; for neutral praise, 极了 or 得很 fit better.
    Português

死了 após um adjetivo eleva-o ao limite — "… até a morte, extremamente." É a correspondência exata do inglês "assustado até a morte," "entediado até a morte": vívido, casual e inclinado para sentimentos desagradáveis. O sujeito é opcional.

Estrutura: (Subject +) Adjective + 死了

    I'm我wǒhungry饿èto death死了sǐ le!

    Estou morrendo de fome!

    today今天jīn tiāntired累lèito death死了sǐ le!

    Estou exausto hoje!

    this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fuugly丑chǒuto death死了sǐ le。

    Esta roupa é horrível.

    Lembre-se: 死了 = Inglês "…até a morte" (累死了 = "cansado até a morte"). É o primo dramático de 极了 — mais alto, mais informal, principalmente para miséria (累, 饿, 热, 丑) — e se anexa nu, sem 得.

    Cuidado

    • Recorra a ele quando o sentimento for ruim e você quiser exagerar; para elogios neutros, 极了 ou 得很 se encaixam melhor.

差不多 — "mais ou menos, aproximadamente"

    English

Read 差不多 literally and it explains itself: 差 (difference) + 不 (not) + 多 (much) = "not much difference." Hence "about the same, more or less, almost." It can stand alone as a predicate, link two things (A 跟 B 差不多), or work as an adverb before a quantity.

    Structure: Subject + 差不多 · A + 跟 / 和 + B + 差不多

these这zhètwo两个liǎng gewords词cí的demeanings意思yì siabout the same差不多chà bu duō。

These two words mean about the same thing.

Shanghai上海Shàng hǎiand和héNew York纽约Niǔ yuēmuch the same差不多chà bu duō。

Shanghai and New York are much the same.

Remember: 差(difference) 不(not) 多(much) — "not much off." Decode the three characters and the meaning ("about the same / almost there") falls out for free.

    Watch out

    • As an adverb it also means "almost (there)": 差不多了 ("that's about enough"), 差不多十点 ("around ten").
    • For several items, add 都: 这几个都差不多.
    Português

Leia 差不多 literalmente e ele se explica: 差 (diferença) + 不 (não) + 多 (muito) = "pouca diferença." Daí "mais ou menos, quase." Pode funcionar sozinho como predicado, ligar duas coisas (A 跟 B 差不多) ou atuar como advérbio antes de uma quantidade.

    Estrutura: Subject + 差不多 · A + 跟 / 和 + B + 差不多

these这zhètwo两个liǎng gewords词cí的demeanings意思yì siabout the same差不多chà bu duō。

Estas duas palavras significam aproximadamente a mesma coisa.

Shanghai上海Shàng hǎiand和héNew York纽约Niǔ yuēmuch the same差不多chà bu duō。

Xangai e Nova York são muito semelhantes.

Lembre-se: 差(diferença) 不(não) 多(muito) — "não está longe." Decodifique os três caracteres e o significado ("mais ou menos / quase lá") surge naturalmente.

    Cuidado

    • Como advérbio, também significa "quase (lá)": 差不多了 ("isso já basta"), 差不多十点 ("por volta das dez").
    • Para vários itens, adicione 都: 这几个都差不多.
    2.2

    看来 — "parece, aparentemente"

    English

看来 offers up the speaker's read of a situation — "it seems, apparently." Use 在 + person + 看来 for "in someone's view." The pitfall is confusing it with 看起来 ("it looks like" from physical appearance): 看来 is a judgement in your head, 看起来 is what your eyes report.

    Structure: 看来 + Judgement · 在 + Person + 看来

    it seems看来kàn láihe他tānot不bùcoming来lái了le。

    It seems he's not coming.

    in在zàimy我wǒview看来kàn láithis,这个zhè geplan计划jì huàwon't work行不通xíng bu tōng。

In my view, this plan won't work.

Remember: 看来 = "drawing it together, I reckon…" (a conclusion); 看起来 = "it appears to the eye." 来 is the "arriving at a verdict" part — you've weighed things and landed on a view.

    Watch out

    • 在我看来 is "in my opinion" — a personal verdict, not a fact.
    Português

看来 oferece a leitura do orador sobre uma situação — "parece, aparentemente." Use 在 + pessoa + 看来 para "na visão de alguém." A armadilha é confundi-lo com 看起来 ("parece que" por aparência física): 看来 é um julgamento na sua cabeça, 看起来 é o que seus olhos relatam.

    Estrutura: 看来 + Judgement · 在 + Person + 看来

    it seems看来kàn láihe他tānot不bùcoming来lái了le。

Parece que ele não vai vir.

    in在zàimy我wǒview看来kàn láithis,这个zhè geplan计划jì huàwon't work行不通xíng bu tōng。

Na minha opinião, este plano não funcionará.

Lembre-se: 看来 = "tirando as conclusões, eu acho…" (uma conclusão); 看起来 = "parece aos olhos." 来 é a parte de "chegar a um veredito" — você pesou as coisas e chegou a uma opinião.

    Cuidado

    • 在我看来 é "na minha opinião" — um veredito pessoal, não um fato.
    2.3

正好 — "exatamente no ponto, por acaso"

    English

正好 is a happy bullseye — 正 (exactly) + 好 (right) — "just right" (in size, time, or amount) or "as it happens, happen to." It plays both adjective and adverb.

Structure: Subject + 正好 + Verb Phrase · … 正好 (adjective)

you你nǐcame来lái了leI!我wǒwas just about to正好zhèng hǎo要yàolook for找zhǎoyou你nǐ。

You're here! I was just about to look for you.

this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fu的desize大小dà xiǎojust right正好zhèng hǎo。

This outfit is just the right size.

Remember: 正(exactly) 好(right) = a lucky bullseye — the right size, the right moment, the right amount, all landing at once.

    Watch out

    • Adverb (正好要走 "just about to leave") and adjective (大小正好 "just the right size") — same word, two roles.
    Português

正好 é um acerto feliz — 正 (exatamente) + 好 (certo) — "justo no tamanho, tempo ou quantidade" ou "por acaso, acontecer por coincidência." Atua tanto como adjetivo quanto como advérbio.

Estrutura: Subject + 正好 + Verb Phrase · … 正好 (adjetivo)

you你nǐcame来lái了leI!我wǒwas just about to正好zhèng hǎo要yàolook for找zhǎoyou你nǐ。

Você está aqui! Eu estava prestes a procurar você.

this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fu的desize大小dà xiǎojust right正好zhèng hǎo。

Esta roupa é exatamente do tamanho certo.

Lembre-se: 正(exatamente) 好(certo) = um acerto feliz — o tamanho certo, o momento certo, a quantidade certa, tudo acontecendo ao mesmo tempo.

    Cuidado

    • Advérbio (正好要走 "prestes a sair") e adjetivo (大小正好 "tamanho justo") — mesma palavra, dois papéis.
    2.4

只好 — "não ter escolha senão"

    English

只好 is the only option left — 只 (only) + 好 (good/workable) — "the only workable choice, so I'll take it (reluctantly)." English: "have no choice but to, can only, had to."

Structure: (Situation,) (Subject +) 只好 + Verb Phrase

the restaurants餐厅cān tīngall都dōuclosed关门guān mén了lewe,我们wǒ menhad no choice but to只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùeat吃chīfast food快餐kuài cān。

The restaurants were all closed, so we had no choice but to get fast food.

I我wǒforgot忘wàng了leto book预约yù yuēso had to,只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùqueue排队pái duì。

I forgot to book, so I had to queue.

Remember: 只好 = "the ONLY good option left" — you do it, but you'd rather not. For a stronger, more forced "have to," step up to 不得不.

    Watch out

    • It always carries a whiff of reluctance — the choice isn't a happy one.
    Português

只好 é a única opção restante — 只 (apenas) + 好 (bom/funcional) — "a única opção viável, então vou levá-la (relutantemente)." Inglês: "não ter escolha senão, só posso, tive que."

Estrutura: (Situation,) (Subject +) 只好 + Verb Phrase

the restaurants餐厅cān tīngall都dōuclosed关门guān mén了lewe,我们wǒ menhad no choice but to只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùeat吃chīfast food快餐kuài cān。

Os restaurantes estavam todos fechados, então não tivemos escolha senão pedir comida rápida.

I我wǒforgot忘wàng了leto book预约yù yuēso had to,只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùqueue排队pái duì。

Esqueci de reservar, então tive que fazer fila.

Lembre-se: 只好 = "A ÚNICA opção boa restante" — você faz, mas preferia não fazer. Para um "ter que" mais forte e forçado, avance para 不得不.

    Cuidado

    • Ele sempre carrega um cheiro de relutância — a escolha não é feliz.
    2.5

    又 + 不 / 没 — negação enfática

    English

This 又 has nothing to do with "again." In front of 不 / 没 it adds a defensive, argumentative kick — "(but) it's not even / it's not as if …." You'll hear it constantly with 干吗 / 干嘛 ("why on earth").

    Structure: 又 + 不 / 没 + Predicate

    ask问wènme我wǒwhy干吗gàn máI?我wǒit's not as if又yòudon't不bùknow知道zhī dào。

Why ask me? It's not as if I'd know.

these这些zhè xiēdishes菜càiit's not as if又yòuhaven't没méigone off坏huàiwhy,为什么wèi shén me要yàothrow out扔rēng?

The food hasn't even gone off — why throw it out?

Remember: 又 + 不/没 = the "it's-not-as-if" shrug (又不是, 又没…) — a verbal eye-roll defending yourself. It is not the "again" 又, even though it's the same character.

    Watch out

    • It needs that defensive context — without an implied "so why…?", it reads as plain "again."
    Português

Este 又 não tem nada a ver com "de novo." Na frente de 不 / 没, ele adiciona um toque defensivo, argumentativo — "(mas) nem é que / não é como se …." Você o ouvirá constantemente com 干吗 / 干嘛 ("por que diabos").

    Estrutura: 又 + 不 / 没 + Predicate

    ask问wènme我wǒwhy干吗gàn máI?我wǒit's not as if又yòudon't不bùknow知道zhī dào。

Por que me perguntar? Não é como se eu soubesse.

these这些zhè xiēdishes菜càiit's not as if又yòuhaven't没méigone off坏huàiwhy,为什么wèi shén me要yàothrow out扔rēng?

A comida nem estragou — por que jogar fora?

    Lembre-se: 又 + 不/没 = o shrug "não é como se" (又不是, 又没…) — um revirar de olhos verbal se defendendo. Não é o "de novo" 又, embora seja o mesmo caractere.

    Cuidado

    • Precisa desse contexto defensivo — sem um "então por que…" implícito, lê-se como "de novo" simples.
    2.6

    可 + Adjetivo + 了 — enfático "realmente, tão"

    English

The adverb 可 slams an adjective home — "really, so" — usually against what you'd expect. It's informal and northern-flavoured, and it almost always closes with 了.

    Structure: 可 + Adjective + 了

    this这只zhè zhīpuppy小狗xiǎo gǒuso可kěnaughty淘气táo qì了le!

    This puppy is so naughty!

    he他tāreally可kěimpressive优秀yōu xiù了le!

    He's really impressive!

Remember: 可…了 wraps an adjective in a "wow, really!" (可好了, 可漂亮了, 可大了). It nearly always bookends with 了, and has a chatty, northern ring. (Note 可爱/可贵 are not examples of this pattern — there 可- is a word-building prefix meaning "-able / worthy of," not the emphatic 可.)

    Watch out

    • 可 also means "but," can stress a verb (我可没说), or mean "finally" — context picks the sense.
    Português

O advérbio 可 martela o adjetivo — "realmente, tão" — geralmente contra o que se esperaria. É informal e tem sabor do norte, e quase sempre termina com 了.

    Estrutura: 可 + Adjective + 了

    this这只zhè zhīpuppy小狗xiǎo gǒuso可kěnaughty淘气táo qì了le!

    Este filhote é tão travesso!

    he他tāreally可kěimpressive优秀yōu xiù了le!

    2.7

原来 — "originalmente; então é assim que foi"

    English

原来 wears two hats: "original(ly), former" (原来的 + noun), and "so it turns out / all along" — that lightbulb moment when you suddenly grasp something you'd missed.

    Structure: 原来 + 的 + Noun · Subject + 原来 + Predicate

    so原来yuán láiyou你nǐare是shìa teacher老师lǎo shī啊a!

    Oh, so you're a teacher!

    we我们wǒ menoriginally原来yuán láilived住zhùin在zàiPudong浦东Pǔ dōng。

    We originally lived in Pudong.

Remember: both senses share "the way things really were all along." Realisation: 原来如此 ("ah, so that's it!"). "Former": 原来的价格 ("the original price"). Contrast 本来 ("originally, but it changed") at the end of this level.

    Watch out

    • The "aha!" sense is the one that surprises learners — 原来 ≠ "originally" there, it's "it turns out."
    Português

原来 veste dois chapéus: "original(mente), anterior" (原来的 + substantivo), e "então é assim que foi / a longo prazo" — aquele momento de lâmpada acesa quando você finalmente entende algo que havia perdido.

    Estrutura: 原来 + 的 + Noun · Subject + 原来 + Predicate

    so原来yuán láiyou你nǐare是shìa teacher老师lǎo shī啊a!

    Ah, então você é professor!

    we我们wǒ menoriginally原来yuán láilived住zhùin在zàiPudong浦东Pǔ dōng。

    Morávamos originalmente em Pudong.

Lembre-se: ambos os sentidos compartilham "a maneira como as coisas realmente foram o tempo todo." Realização: 原来如此 ("ah, é isso!"). "Anterior": 原来的价格 ("o preço original"). Contrastar com 本来 ("originalmente, mas mudou") no final deste nível.

    Cuidado

    • O sentido "aha!" é aquele que surpreende os aprendizes — 原来 ≠ "originalmente" lá, é "descobre-se que".
    2.8

    差点(儿) — "quase (e não aconteceu)"

    English

差点 = "off by a hair" — something nearly happened, usually something bad, and the feeling is relief that it didn't. The iron rule: whatever follows 差点 did not actually happen.

    Structure: Subject + 差点 (+ 就) + Predicate (+ 了)

    the car车chēalmost差点chà diǎnhit撞到zhuàng dàome我wǒ。

The car almost hit me (it didn't).

    I我wǒtoday今天jīn tiānalmost差点chà diǎnwas late迟到chí dào了le。

    I was almost late today.

Remember: 差点 = "missed it by THAT much" → the thing did not happen (and good thing too). The famous quirk: 差点没摔倒 still means "almost fell" — the 没 adds feeling, not logic.

    Watch out

    • For a wanted outcome, 差点没 flips to relief it did happen: 差点没赶上 ("only just caught it").
    Português

差点 = "falhou por pouco" — algo quase aconteceu, geralmente algo ruim, e a sensação é de alívio por não ter acontecido. A regra de ferro: o que segue 差点 não aconteceu de fato.

    Estrutura: Subject + 差点 (+ 就) + Predicate (+ 了)

    the car车chēalmost差点chà diǎnhit撞到zhuàng dàome我wǒ。

O carro quase me atropelou (não me atropelou).

    I我wǒtoday今天jīn tiānalmost差点chà diǎnwas late迟到chí dào了le。

    Eu quase me atrasei hoje.

Lembre-se: 差点 = "perdeu por AQULELA distância" → a coisa não aconteceu (e bem que foi). A peculiaridade famosa: 差点没摔倒 ainda significa "quase caiu" — o 没 adiciona sentimento, não lógica.

    Cuidado

    • Para um resultado desejado, 差点没 inverte para alívio de que aconteceu: 差点没赶上 ("peguei por pouco").
    2.9

    从来 + 都 — "sempre, o tempo todo"

    English

从来 ("from the very start") with 都(是) means "always, have always." But you'll meet it far more often in the negative — 从来不 / 从来没 = "never (not once)."

    Structure: Subject + 从来 + 都(是) + Predicate

    he他tāalways从来cóng láihas都dōubeen like this这样zhè yàng。

    He's always been like this.

    I我wǒnever从来cóng lái不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ。

    I never drink.

Remember: 从来 = "from the beginning until now." Positive form needs 都 (从来都…); negative is the everyday one — 从来不 / 从来没 = "never, not a single time."

    Watch out

    • Don't drop the 都 in the positive: 从来都很努力 ✓, not 从来很努力.
    Português

从来 ("desde o início") com 都(é) significa "sempre, tenho sempre." Mas você o encontrará muito mais frequentemente na forma negativa — 从来不 / 从来没 = "nunca (nem uma vez)."

    Estrutura: Subject + 从来 + 都(是) + Predicate

    he他tāalways从来cóng láihas都dōubeen like this这样zhè yàng。

    Ele sempre foi assim.

    I我wǒnever从来cóng lái不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ。

    Eu nunca bebo.

Lembre-se: 从来 = "do início até agora." A forma positiva precisa de 都 (从来都…); a negativa é a do dia a dia — 从来不 / 从来没 = "nunca, nem uma única vez.",

    Cuidado

    • Não omita o 都 na forma afirmativa: 从来都很努力 ✓, e não 从来很努力.
    2.10

Resultado — "as a result, in the end"

    English

As a connector, 结果 ("result") means "as a result, and in the end" — and it usually drags in an unexpected or unwelcome outcome. It opens the second clause with a twist.

Structure: Reason / Situation ,结果 + Result

    she她tādressed穿chuān得devery很hěnlightly少shǎoas a result,结果jié guǒcaught a cold感冒gǎn mào了le。

She dressed too lightly and ended up catching a cold.

    he他tādrove开kāi得detoo太tàifast快kuàias a result,结果jié guǒhit撞到zhuàng dào了lesomeone人rén。

He drove too fast and ended up hitting someone.

Remember: 结果 = "the (often nasty) upshot." It sets up a payoff that's usually bad or surprising — "…and as a result, of course, X."

    Watch out

    • It's also a plain noun ("result"): 考试结果 ("the exam results").
    Português

Como conector, 结果 ("result") significa "como resultado, e no final" — e geralmente implica um resultado inesperado ou indesejado. Ele inicia a segunda oração com uma reviravolta.

Estrutura: Reason / Situation ,结果 + Result

    she她tādressed穿chuān得devery很hěnlightly少shǎoas a result,结果jié guǒcaught a cold感冒gǎn mào了le。

Ela se vestiu de forma muito leve e acabou pegando um resfriado.

    he他tādrove开kāi得detoo太tàifast快kuàias a result,结果jié guǒhit撞到zhuàng dào了lesomeone人rén。

*Ele dirigiu rápido demais e acabou atingindo alguém.

Lembre-se: resultado = "a consequência (geralmente desagradável)." Ele estabelece um desfecho que geralmente é ruim ou surpreendente — "…e como resultado, é claro, X."

    Cuidado

    • Também é um substantivo simples ("result"): 考试结果 ("os resultados do exame").
    2.11

    够 — "suficiente"

    English

够 means "enough, sufficient." Its trick is that position flips the mood: before a verb/adjective it's "enough to …" (够吃, 够大); after certain verbs it's "fed up" (受够了). It often takes 了.

    Structure: 够 + Verb / Adjective (+ 了) · Verb + 够 + 了

    we我们wǒ menbought买mǎi的defood菜càienough够gòuto eat吃chī了le。

    We bought enough food.

    I我wǒput up with it受shòuenough够gòu了le!

    I've had enough!

Remember: 够 before = "enough to" (够高); 受够了 / V够了 after = "had enough OF it." Same word, opposite feeling, decided by which side of the verb it sits.

    Watch out

    • 吃够了 = "sick of eating it" (fed up), not "ate enough" — mind that "fed-up" tilt.
    Português

够 significa "suficiente, bastante." Seu truque é que a posição inverte o sentido: antes de um verbo/adjetivo é "suficiente para …" (够吃, 够大); depois de certos verbos é "comer até ficar farto" (受够了). Frequentemente acompanha-se com 了.

    Estrutura: 够 + Verb / Adjective (+ 了) · Verb + 够 + 了

    we我们wǒ menbought买mǎi的defood菜càienough够gòuto eat吃chī了le。

    Compramos comida suficiente.

    I我wǒput up with it受shòuenough够gòu了le!

    *Estou cansado! *

Lembre-se: 够 antes = "suficiente para" (够高); 受够了 / V够了 depois = "cansado DE." Mesma palavra, sentimento oposto, determinado pelo lado do verbo em que está posicionada.

    Cuidado

    • 吃够了 = "sick of eating it" (cansado), não "ate enough" — preste atenção à nuance de "estar cansado/fed up".
    2.12

甚至 — "até, ao ponto de"

    English

甚至 hauls in the most extreme or surprising case — "even, so much that." It frequently links arms with 连 … 都 / 也 for extra punch.

    Structure: ……,甚至 (连) + Extreme Case + 都 / 也 …

    he他tātoo太tàibusy忙máng了leeven,甚至shèn zhìto eat吃chīlunch午饭wǔ fàn的detime时间shí jiān都dōuhasn't没有méi yǒu。

He's so busy he doesn't even have time for lunch.

this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tívery很hěnsimple简单jiǎn dāneven,甚至shèn zhì连liána child孩子hái zi都dōuknows知道zhī dào。

It's so simple even a child knows the answer.

Remember: 甚至 = "…even THIS!" — it reaches for the most extreme example to drive a point home, often hand-in-hand with 连…都.

    Watch out

    • It escalates — the thing after 甚至 should be the most surprising item, not just another one.
    Português

Shènzhì (甚至) indica o caso mais extremo ou surpreendente — "até mesmo, tanto que". Frequentemente se combina com 连 … 都 / 也 para dar mais ênfase.

    Estrutura: ……,甚至 (连) + Extreme Case + 都 / 也 …

    he他tātoo太tàibusy忙máng了leeven,甚至shèn zhìto eat吃chīlunch午饭wǔ fàn的detime时间shí jiān都dōuhasn't没有méi yǒu。

Ele está tão ocupado que nem tempo para o almoço tem.

this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tívery很hěnsimple简单jiǎn dāneven,甚至shèn zhì连liána child孩子hái zi都dōuknows知道zhī dào。

É tão simples que até uma criança sabe a resposta.

Lembre-se: 甚至 = "…até ISTO!" — ele busca o exemplo mais extremo para reforçar um ponto, frequentemente em conjunto com 连…都.

    Cuidado

    • Ele se intensifica — o que vem depois de 甚至 deve ser o item mais surpreendente, não apenas mais um.
    2.13

还是 + Verbo +吧 — "seria melhor, afinal"

    English

Beyond "or," 还是 before a verb settles on the choice you prefer after weighing things up — "had better, I'd rather (after all)." It loves to close with 吧.

    Structure: Subject + 还是 + Verb Phrase + 吧

    after all还是hái shìtomorrow明天míng tiāngo去qù吧ba。

    Let's go tomorrow after all.

    you你nǐhad better还是hái shìnot别biégo去qù了le。

    You'd better not go.

Remember: 还是…吧 = "on reflection, better to…" — a verdict reached after mulling it over. Distinct from 还是 = "or" (in questions) or "still."

    Watch out

    • The 吧 softens it into a gentle suggestion — dropping it makes the decision sound firmer.
    Português

Além de "ou", 还是 antes de um verbo se fixa na escolha que você prefere após considerar as coisas — "seria melhor, eu preferiria (de qualquer maneira)". Adora terminar com 吧.

    Estrutura: Subject + 还是 + Verb Phrase + 吧

    after all还是hái shìtomorrow明天míng tiāngo去qù吧ba。

    Vamos amanhã afinal de contas.

    you你nǐhad better还是hái shìnot别biégo去qù了le。

    Você deveria evitar ir.

Lembre-se: 还是…吧 = "após refletir, é melhor…" — uma conclusão alcançada após ponderar. Distinto de 还是 = "ou" (em perguntas) ou "ainda."

    Cuidado

    • O 吧 suaviza a frase, transformando-a em uma sugestão delicada — sua omissão torna a decisão mais enfática.
    2.14

Melhor — "had better, best to"

    English

最好 ("best") moonlights as an adverb to give gentle advice — "had better, it would be best to."

Structure: Subject + 最好 + Predicate

you你nǐhad better最好zuì hǎofirst先xiānrest休息xiū xia bit一下yí xià。

You'd better rest a bit first.

    outside外面wài miàncold冷lěngbest to,最好zuì hǎomore多duōwear穿chuān点diǎn。

It's cold out — best wear a bit more.

Remember: 最好 = "the best thing would be…" — advice with a soft touch, gentler than 应该 or 得. Negative: 最好别 ("had best not").

    Watch out

    • It's a suggestion, not a rule — for an obligation use 得 / 必须 instead.
    Português

最好 ("best") funciona como advérbio para dar conselhos suaves — "had better, seria melhor."

Estrutura: Subject + 最好 + Predicate

you你nǐhad better最好zuì hǎofirst先xiānrest休息xiū xia bit一下yí xià。

Você deveria descansar um pouco primeiro.

    outside外面wài miàncold冷lěngbest to,最好zuì hǎomore多duōwear穿chuān点diǎn。

*Está frio lá fora — é melhor usar mais uma roupa.

Lembre-se: 最好 = "a melhor coisa seria…" — conselho com um toque suave, mais delicado do que 应该 ou 得. Negativo: 最好别 ("seria melhor não").

    Cuidado

    • É uma sugestão, não uma regra — para uma obrigação, use 得 / 必须 em vez disso.
    2.15

不得不 — "ter que, não poder deixar de"

    English

不得不 stacks a double negative — "not (不) able to not (得不) do" — into a reluctant, unavoidable "have to." It's more forced and grudging than 必须.

Structure: Subject + 不得不 + Verb

the lift电梯diàn tīagain又yòubroke坏huài了lewe,我们wǒ menhad to不得不bù dé bùclimb爬páthe stairs楼梯lóu tī。

The lift broke again, so we had to take the stairs.

you你nǐtoo太tàigood厉害lì hai了leI,我wǒhave to不得不bù dé bùadmit it承认chéng rèn。

You're so good — I have to admit it.

Remember: 不得不 = "can't NOT do it" (two negatives cancelling to a grudging yes). It shouts no way out; 必须 is the calmer, neutral "must / it's required."

    Watch out

    • Don't miscount the negatives — 不得不去 means "have to go," not "can't go."
    Português

不得不 emprega uma dupla negação — "não (不) ser capaz de não (得不) fazer" — em um sentido relutante e inevitável de "ter que". É mais forçado e resmungão do que 必须.

Estrutura: Subject + 不得不 + Verb

the lift电梯diàn tīagain又yòubroke坏huài了lewe,我们wǒ menhad to不得不bù dé bùclimb爬páthe stairs楼梯lóu tī。

O elevador quebrou novamente, então tivemos que pegar as escadas.

you你nǐtoo太tàigood厉害lì hai了leI,我wǒhave to不得不bù dé bùadmit it承认chéng rèn。

Você é tão bom — tenho que admitir.

Lembre-se: 不得不 = "não pode NÃO fazer isso" (duas negações que se anulam, resultando em um sim relutante). Expressa sem saída; 必须 é mais calmo e neutro, significando "deve / é obrigatório."

    Cuidado

    • Não confunda os negativos — 不得不去 significa "ter que ir", não "não poder ir".
    2.16

到底 — "on earth / after all / finally"

    English

到底 = "all the way to the bottom" — and it digs for the real answer. Three jobs: pressing in a question ("on earth, exactly"), "after all / in the end," and "finally" (like 终于).

    Structure: …… 到底 …… · 到底 + Verb + 了

    you你nǐon earth到底dào dǐwant想xiǎngto say说shuōwhat什么shén me?

What on earth are you trying to say?

the weather天气tiān qìfinally到底dào dǐwarmed up暖和nuǎn huo了le。

The weather has finally warmed up.

Remember: 到底 = "get to the BOTTOM of it." In a question → "on earth / exactly" (你到底去不去?); in a statement → "after all / finally."

    Watch out

    • In a yes-no question, use the V-not-V form: 你到底去不去? ("are you going or not?").
    Português

到底 = "até o fundo" — e ele cava para encontrar a resposta real. Três funções: enfatizar uma pergunta ("no mundo, exatamente"), "de qualquer maneira / no fim", e "finalmente" (como 终于).

    Estrutura: …… 到底 …… · 到底 + Verb + 了

    you你nǐon earth到底dào dǐwant想xiǎngto say说shuōwhat什么shén me?

*O que diabos você está tentando dizer?

the weather天气tiān qìfinally到底dào dǐwarmed up暖和nuǎn huo了le。

    O clima finalmente esquentou.

Lembre-se: 到底 = "chegar ao FUNDO da questão." Em uma pergunta → "na terra / exatamente" (你到底去不去?); em uma afirmação → "finalmente / no fim das contas."

    Cuidado

    • Em perguntas de sim ou não, use a forma V-não-V: 你到底去不去? ("você vai ou não?").
    2.17

究竟 — "exatamente, no mundo" (formal)

    English

究竟 is the more formal twin of 到底 — it sharpens a question hunting for a specific fact (a name, a time, a reason): "exactly, on earth."

Structure: 究竟 + Question Word …

    this这个zhè geperson人rénon earth究竟jiū jìngis是shìwho谁shéi?

Who on earth is this person?

we我们wǒ menexactly究竟jiū jìngstill还háihave to要yàowait等děnghow long多久duō jiǔ?

Exactly how much longer do we have to wait?

Remember: 究竟 = 到底 in a suit. Same "on earth / exactly" in questions, just a more written, formal register.

    Watch out

    • Both press a question; 究竟 simply sounds more bookish than the everyday 到底.
    Português

究竟 é a variante mais formal de 到底 — ele intensifica uma pergunta que busca um fato específico (um nome, um horário, um motivo): "exatamente, no mundo".

Estrutura: 究竟 + Question Word …

    this这个zhè geperson人rénon earth究竟jiū jìngis是shìwho谁shéi?

    *Quem diabos é essa pessoa?

we我们wǒ menexactly究竟jiū jìngstill还háihave to要yàowait等děnghow long多久duō jiǔ?

Exatamente quanto tempo ainda temos que esperar?

Lembre-se: 究竟 = 到底 em um terno. Mesmo "no fundo / exatamente" em perguntas, apenas um registro mais escrito e formal.

    Cuidado

    • Ambos pressionam uma questão; 究竟 simplesmente soa mais formal do que o cotidiano 到底.
    2.18

刚 — "apenas (há pouco tempo)"

    English

The adverb 刚 (or 刚刚) marks an action that happened a short time ago — "just." It sits right before the verb, and with a duration it needs no "ago" word.

    Structure: Subject + 刚 + Verb

    we我们wǒ menjust刚gāngfound out知道zhī dào。

    We just found out.

    he他tājust刚gāngcame to来láiChina中国Zhōng guótwo两个liǎng gemonths ago月yuè。

He came to China just two months ago.

Remember: 刚 = adverb "just," glued to the verb (刚到) — and "two months ago" needs no extra word: 刚来两个月. Don't mix it up with the noun 刚才 ("a moment ago") — see the comparison file later.

    Watch out

    • 刚 + duration measures time from now; 刚才 marks a point in the recent past.
    Português

O advérbio 刚 (ou 刚刚) indica uma ação que ocorreu há pouco tempo — "acabar de". Ele vem imediatamente antes do verbo e, com uma expressão de duração, não precisa da palavra "atrás".

    Estrutura: Subject + 刚 + Verb

    we我们wǒ menjust刚gāngfound out知道zhī dào。

    *Acabamos de descobrir.

    he他tājust刚gāngcame to来láiChina中国Zhōng guótwo两个liǎng gemonths ago月yuè。

*Ele veio para a China há apenas dois meses.

Lembre-se: 刚 = advérbio "apenas", colado ao verbo (刚到) — e "dois meses atrás" não precisa de palavra extra: 刚来两个月. Não o confunda com o substantivo 刚才 ("um momento atrás") — veja o arquivo de comparação mais tarde.

    Cuidado

    • 刚 + medidas de duração conta o tempo a partir do agora; 刚才 marca um ponto no passado recente.
    2.19

    一 + classificador + 一 + classificador — "um por um"

    English

Double up 一 + measure word and you get something happening one unit at a time — "one by one, step by step." 个 is the default measure word, but slot in whichever fits the noun.

    Structure: 一 + MW + 一 + MW (+ Noun)

    don't别biéall shout吵chǎoone,一个yí geby one一个yí gespeak说shuō。

Don't all talk at once — one at a time.

the child孩子hái ziday一天yì tiānby day一天yì tiāngrows up长大zhǎng dà。

The child grows up day by day.

Remember: repeat the measure word → "one ___ at a time": 一个一个 (one by one), 一步一步 (step by step), 一天一天 (day by day), 一遍一遍 (over and over).

    Watch out

    • Match the measure word to the noun — 一步一步 for steps, 一个一个 for countable things.
    Português

Duplique 一 + classificador e você obtém algo acontecendo uma unidade de cada vez — "um por um, passo a passo." 个 é o classificador padrão, mas insira aquele que se encaixe no substantivo.

    Estrutura: 一 + MW + 一 + MW (+ Noun)

    don't别biéall shout吵chǎoone,一个yí geby one一个yí gespeak说shuō。

Não falem todos ao mesmo tempo — um de cada vez.

the child孩子hái ziday一天yì tiānby day一天yì tiāngrows up长大zhǎng dà。

A criança cresce dia após dia.

Lembre-se: repita o classificador → "um ___ de cada vez": 一个一个 (um por um), 一步一步 (passo a passo), 一天一天 (dia após dia), 一遍一遍 (repetidamente).

    Cuidado

    • Combine o classificador com o substantivo — 一步一步 para passos, 一个一个 para coisas contáveis.
    2.20

    本来 — "originalmente (mas mudou)"

    English

本来 means "originally, in the first place" — and it usually sets up that things later changed course. It often runs with 是 … 的 plus a 但是 / 可是 clause; with 就 it flips to "of course (it always was)."

    Structure: Subject + 本来 (+ 是) … 的 ,但是 … · 本来就 …

I我wǒoriginally本来běn láimeant要yàoto go去qù的debut,可是kě shìthen后来hòu láigot sick病bìng了le。

I'd meant to go, but then I got sick.

moving house搬家bān jiāto begin with本来běn lái就jiùvery很hěntroublesome麻烦má fan。

Moving house is a hassle to begin with.

Remember: 本来 sets up a U-turn — "originally X… but then Y." Contrast 原来 (a sudden realisation). And 本来就 = "of course / obviously — it always was."

    Watch out

    • If nothing changed and you mean "it turns out," you want 原来, not 本来.
    Português

本来 significa "originalmente, em primeiro lugar" — e geralmente estabelece que as coisas depois mudaram de rumo. Frequentemente aparece com 是 … 的 plus uma cláusula 但是 / 可是; com 就 inverte para "claro (sempre foi)."

    Estrutura: Subject + 本来 (+ 是) … 的 ,但是 … · 本来就 …

I我wǒoriginally本来běn láimeant要yàoto go去qù的debut,可是kě shìthen后来hòu láigot sick病bìng了le。

Eu pretendia ir, mas então adoeci.

moving house搬家bān jiāto begin with本来běn lái就jiùvery很hěntroublesome麻烦má fan。

Mudar de casa já é uma chateação por si só.

Lembre-se: 本来 prepara uma U-turn — "originalmente X… mas então Y." Contraste com 原来 (uma realização súbita). E 本来就 = "claro / obviamente — sempre foi assim."

    Cuidado

    • Se nada mudou e você quer dizer "acaba sendo", você quer 原来, não 本来.
    2.21

    就 + sujeito — "apenas (este)"

    English

Park 就 in front of the subject or quantity and it spotlights how little there is — "only, just (this one)." It often rides with 一个 / 一次.

    Structure: 就 + Subject + Predicate · 就 + Verb + Number + MW

everyone大家dà jiā都dōuleft work下班xià bān了leonly,就jiùthe boss老板lǎo bǎnstill还háihasn't没méileft走zǒu。

Everyone's left work; only the boss is still here.

    I我wǒonly就jiùbeen there去过qù guoonce一次yí cì。

    I've only been there once.

Remember: like 才 + number, this 就 shrinks things to "only / just" (就老板, 就一次), underlining smallness. It's a different 就 from the "right away / as early as" one.

    Watch out

    • Context tells the two 就's apart: a small quantity nearby → "only"; a time → "as early as / then."
    Português

Posicione 就 na frente do sujeito ou quantidade e ele destaca o quanto há de pouco — "apenas, só (este)." Frequentemente acompanha 一个 / 一次.

    Estrutura: 就 + Subject + Predicate · 就 + Verb + Number + MW

everyone大家dà jiā都dōuleft work下班xià bān了leonly,就jiùthe boss老板lǎo bǎnstill还háihasn't没méileft走zǒu。

Todos saíram do trabalho; apenas o chefe ainda está aqui.

    I我wǒonly就jiùbeen there去过qù guoonce一次yí cì。

    Só estive lá uma vez.

Lembre-se: como 才 + número, este 就 reduz coisas a "apenas / só" (就老板, 就一次), sublinhando a pequenez. É um 就 diferente daquele que significa "logo / tão cedo".

    Cuidado

    • O contexto distingue os dois 就's: uma pequena quantidade próxima → "apenas"; um tempo → "tão cedo / então."
    2.22

千万 — "tenha certeza, faça o que fizer"

    English

千万 (literally "thousand ten-thousand") is an urgent plea — "be sure to / whatever you do (don't) …." The huge numbers are the emphasis. It almost always heads a command, paired with 别 / 不要 / 要.

    Structure: 千万 + (别 / 不要 / 要) + Verb Phrase

whatever you do千万qiān wàndon't别biéforget忘wàng了leto bring带dàiyour passport护照hù zhào。

Whatever you do, don't forget your passport.

on the way路上lù shàngdo be sure to千万qiān wàn要yàobe careful小心xiǎo xīn。

Do be careful on the way.

Remember: big numbers = big urgency. 千万 piles "thousand" on "ten-thousand" to mean "I really, really mean it." The go-to shape is 千万别… ("whatever you do, DON'T…").

    Watch out

    • It belongs in pleas and warnings — not a neutral statement.
    Português

千万 (literalmente "mil dez mil") é um apelo urgente — "tenha certeza de / a qualquer custo (não) …..". Os números grandes são a ênfase. Quase sempre inicia um comando, acompanhado por 别 / 不要 / 要.

    Estrutura: 千万 + (别 / 不要 / 要) + Verb Phrase

whatever you do千万qiān wàndon't别biéforget忘wàng了leto bring带dàiyour passport护照hù zhào。

A qualquer custo, não esqueça seu passaporte.

on the way路上lù shàngdo be sure to千万qiān wàn要yàobe careful小心xiǎo xīn。

    Tenha muito cuidado no caminho.

Lembre-se: números grandes = urgência grande. 千万 empilha "mil" sobre "dez mil" para significar "quero dizer mesmo, mesmo que seja." O formato padrão é 千万别… ("a qualquer custo, NÃO…").

    Cuidado

    • Pertence a apelos e avisos — não a uma declaração neutra.
    2.23

    恐怕 — "temo que, provavelmente"

    English

恐怕 has 恐 ("fear") right in it, and that's the feel: a likely but unwelcome prediction softened with "I'm afraid that, I worry that." It opens the clause, ideally before the subject, often with 要 / 会.

Structure: (Reason,) 恐怕 + Subject + Predicate

today今天jīn tiānI'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàgoing to要yàorain下雨xià yǔ。

I'm afraid it's going to rain today.

    I'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàI我wǒtomorrow明天míng tiāncan't不能bù néngcome来lái。

    I'm afraid I can't come tomorrow.

Remember: 恐怕 hides 恐 (fear) — it's a worried "I'm afraid…" about something unwelcome, never a cheerful guess. Place it before the subject for the most natural ring.

    Watch out

    • For a neutral "probably" (no dread), use 可能 instead.
    Português

恐怕 tem 恐 ("medo") escrito nele, e esse é o sentimento: uma previsão provável mas indesejada suavizada com "temo que, tenho medo que." Abre a oração, idealmente antes do sujeito, muitas vezes com 要 / 会.

Estrutura: (Reason,) 恐怕 + Subject + Predicate

today今天jīn tiānI'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàgoing to要yàorain下雨xià yǔ。

    Temo que vá chover hoje.

    I'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàI我wǒtomorrow明天míng tiāncan't不能bù néngcome来lái。

Temo que não possa vir amanhã.

Lembre-se: 恐怕 esconde 恐 (medo) — é um "temo que..." preocupado sobre algo indesejado, nunca um palpite alegre. Coloque-o antes do sujeito para o som mais natural.

    Cuidado

    • Para um "probavelmente" neutro (sem dread), use 可能 em vez disso.
    2.24

    竟然 — "inesperadamente, na verdade"

    English

竟然 (or just 竟) flags something surprising or hard to believe — "unexpectedly, actually, of all things." It sits after the subject. It's a near-match for 居然, just a touch milder.

Structure: Subject + 竟然 + Predicate

    such a这么zhè mehard难nán的deproblem题tíhe,他tāactually竟然jìng rángot it做zuòright对duì了le。

Such a hard problem — and he actually got it right!

    he他tāunexpectedly竟然jìng rán把bǎthis这zhè件jiànmatter事shìforgot忘wàng了le。

He actually forgot all about it!

Remember: 竟然 = a jaw-drop — "…and yet, of all things, X!" Best rendered "actually / of all things." ≈ 居然 (slightly stronger), opposite of 果然 ("sure enough, as expected").

    Watch out

    • It needs genuine surprise — drop it into a humdrum statement and it sounds off.
    Português

竟然 (ou apenas 竟) marca algo surpreendente ou difícil de acreditar — "inesperadamente, na verdade, entre todas as coisas." Ele vem depois do sujeito. É quase igual a 居然, apenas um pouco mais suave.

Estrutura: Subject + 竟然 + Predicate

    such a这么zhè mehard难nán的deproblem题tíhe,他tāactually竟然jìng rángot it做zuòright对duì了le。

Um problema tão difícil — e ele na verdade acertou!

    he他tāunexpectedly竟然jìng rán把bǎthis这zhè件jiànmatter事shìforgot忘wàng了le。

Ele na verdade esqueceu tudo isso!

Lembre-se: 竟然 = uma boca caída — "...e ainda assim, entre todas as coisas, X!" Melhor traduzido como "na verdade / entre todas as coisas." ≈ 居然 (um pouco mais forte), oposto de 果然 ("como esperado, de fato").

    Cuidado

    • Precisa de surpresa genuína — coloque em uma declaração monótona e soará estranho.
    2.25

难道 — marcador de pergunta retórica

    English

难道 turns a sentence into a rhetorical question of disbelief — "don't tell me …?, surely you don't …?". It usually closes with 吗 and fishes for agreement, not an answer. English has no single word for it.

    Structure: 难道 + Rhetorical Question + 吗?

don't tell me难道nán dàoyou你nǐreally真的zhēn debelieve相信xiāng xìnhim他tā吗ma?

You don't actually believe him, do you?

    today今天jīn tiānis是shìmy我wǒ的debirthday生日shēng rìdon't tell me,难道nán dàoyou你nǐdon't不bùknow知道zhī dào吗ma?

It's my birthday — don't tell me you forgot?

Remember: 难道 = a built-in "surely not…?!" It marks the whole sentence as rhetorical — you're pressing for the listener to agree, not to inform you. Usually 难道…吗?.

    Watch out

    • Don't answer a 难道 question literally — it's making a point, not seeking facts.
    Português

难道 transforma uma frase em uma pergunta retórica de descrença — "não me diga ..., certamente você não ...?". Geralmente termina com 吗 e busca concordância, não uma resposta. O inglês não tem uma única palavra para isso.

    Estrutura: 难道 + Rhetorical Question + 吗?

don't tell me难道nán dàoyou你nǐreally真的zhēn debelieve相信xiāng xìnhim他tā吗ma?

Na verdade você acredita nele, não acredita?

    today今天jīn tiānis是shìmy我wǒ的debirthday生日shēng rìdon't tell me,难道nán dàoyou你nǐdon't不bùknow知道zhī dào吗ma?

É meu aniversário — não me diga que esqueceu?

Lembre-se: 难道 = um 'certamente não...?!' embutido Marca toda a frase como retórica — você está pressionando o ouvinte a concordar, não a informá-lo. Geralmente 难道…吗?.

    Cuidado

    • Não responda literalmente a uma pergunta 难道 — ela faz um ponto, não busca fatos.
    2.26

    先 … ,再 … — "primeiro … depois …"

    English

先 … 再 … lines two actions up in sequence — "first A, then B." As in HSK 3, the catch is that 再 here means "(and) then," not "again." Chain longer runs with 然后 / 接着.

    Structure: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃饭chī fàn。

Wash your hands first, then eat.

    you你nǐshould要yàofirst先xiāndo做zuòhomework作业zuò yèthen,再zàiwatch看kànTV电视diàn shì。

Do your homework first, then watch TV.

Remember: in 先…再…, 再 = "and then" (the next stepping stone), not "again." Extend the chain with 然后 / 接着 for three or more steps.

    Watch out

    • Out of this pairing, 再 does mean "again / more" — it's the 先…再… frame that fixes the "then" reading.
    Português

先 … 再 … alinha duas ações em sequência — "primeiro A, depois B." Assim como no HSK 3, a pegadinha é que 再 aqui significa "(e) depois", não "novamente". Encadeie séries maiores com 然后 / 接着.

    Estrutura: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃饭chī fàn。

Lave as mãos primeiro, depois coma.

    you你nǐshould要yàofirst先xiāndo做zuòhomework作业zuò yèthen,再zàiwatch看kànTV电视diàn shì。

Faça a lição de casa primeiro, depois assista à TV.

Lembre-se: em 先…再…, 再 = "e então" (o próximo degrau), não "novamente." Estenda a cadeia com 然后 / 接着 para três ou mais passos.

    Cuidado

    • Fora dessa combinação, 再 significa "novamente / mais" — é o quadro 先…再… que fixa a leitura "depois".
    2.27

    也都 — "todos … também"

    English

Stack 也 ("also") and 都 ("all") to sweep up a whole group as well — "all … too." The order is locked: 也 comes before 都.

Structure: Subject + 也都 + Predicate

    I'm我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎomy,我wǒ的defamily家人jiā rénall too也都yě dōuvery很hěnwell好hǎo。

    挺 + adjetivo + 的 — "bastante, meio"

    English

挺 … 的 is a laid-back "quite, pretty, rather" — a relaxed, conversational intensifier that almost always wraps up with 的. It's softer than 很 and pops up constantly in everyday chat.

    Structure: 挺 + Adjective + 的

    your你nǐboyfriend男朋友nán péng youpretty挺tǐnghandsome帅shuài的de。

    Your boyfriend is pretty handsome.

    lately最近zuì jìneveryone大家dà jiā都dōuquite挺tǐngbusy忙máng的de。

Remember: 挺 wants its 的 — 挺好的, never bare 挺好. Think of 挺…的 as a matched pair of bookends around the adjective. It's the casual, easygoing "pretty / quite," softer than 很 / 非常.

    Watch out

    • Leave off the 的 and it sounds unfinished to a native ear.
    Português

挺 … 的 é um "bastante, meio, um tanto" relaxado — um intensificador descontraído e conversacional que quase sempre termina com 的. É mais suave que 很 e aparece constantemente em conversas cotidianas.

    …… 什么的 — "e tal coisa, etc."

    English

什么的 rounds off an informal list with a casual wave of the hand — "and so on, and stuff like that." It can even trail a single item when it's obvious what else belongs in the group.

    Structure: Noun 1、Noun 2 (+ Noun 3) + 什么的

my我wǒgrandma奶奶nǎi naionly只zhǐeats吃chīvegetables蔬菜shū càitofu、豆腐dòu fuand so on什么的shén me de。

Maths, physics and so on — I'm not interested in any of it.

Remember: 什么的 = the chatty "…and stuff" — it waves at the rest without listing it. Its formal, neutral twin is 等 / 等等 (next).

    Watch out

    • It's casual — fine in speech, too loose for formal writing.
    Português

不过 — um 'mas' mais suave

    English

不过 means "but, however" — the gentlest of the "but" family, lighter and chattier than 但是 / 可是. It often just tacks a small qualification onto something otherwise positive.

    Structure: …… ,不过 ……

Remember: 不过 = the lightest "but" — 不(not) 过(get past), a small snag you can't quite step over. Softer than 但是 / 可是, and very conversational.

    Watch out

    • 不过 can also mean "only, merely" in other contexts (不过是个误会, "it's only a misunderstanding").
    Português

不过 significa "mas, todavia" — o mais leve da família "mas", mais leve e mais falado que 但是 / 可是. Muitas vezes apenas anexa uma pequena qualificação a algo positivo.

    Cuidado

    • 不过 também pode significar "apenas, meramente" em outros contextos (不过是个误会, "é apenas um mal-entendido").

于是 — "e assim, logo em seguida"

    English

于是 chains a cause to the action it triggers — "and so, thereupon." The second event follows straight from the first. It's a storytelling, past-tense word, usually with 了, and often with 就.

    Structure: …… ,于是 …… + 了

    Watch out

    • It belongs to narration of completed events — it pairs with 了 (and often 就), not with future plans.
    Português

Lembre-se: 于是 = 'e assim' no tempo passado — narra "X aconteceu, e então Y seguiu." Para uma causa→efeito atemporal e lógica ("porque X, portanto Y"), use 所以 / 因此 em vez disso.

    Cuidado

    • Pertence à narração de eventos concluídos — combina com 了 (e frequentemente 就), não com planos futuros.

还有 — "também, e outra coisa"

    English

还有 tacks on a further point as an afterthought — "also, plus, and another thing." It tends to open a fresh sentence after a comma or full stop, the spoken "oh, and…".

    Structure: ……。还有,……

Remember: 还有 = "oh, and also…" — the casual afterthought, literally "still have (more to say)." Order-a-coffee energy: one more thing, then one more.

    Watch out

    • It's informal — for a weightier "in addition," reach for 另外.
    Português

还有 anexa um ponto adicional como um pensamento tardio — "também, além disso, e outra coisa." Tendência a abrir uma nova frase após uma vírgula ou ponto final, o "ah, e…" falado.

    Estrutura: ……。还有,……

Remember: 另外 = a SEPARATE extra point (另 = "other / separate") — more formal than 还有, and it likes a 还 / 也 to echo it. It also means "another (separate) one": 另外一个人.

    Watch out

    • The added clause usually carries 还 / 也 — 另外,我也…, not a bare 另外,我….

    Cuidado

    • A oração adicionada geralmente carrega 还 / 也 — 另外,我也…, não um 另外,我… nu.
    5.5

再说 — "além disso, além do mais"

    English

再说 piles on an extra, often clinching reason to back a decision — "besides, what's more, anyway." It's the "and another thing…" that seals the argument.

    Structure: …… ,再说 ……

Don't buy it — anyway, you don't need it.

Remember: 再说 = "and what's MORE…" — it adds a reason that clinches what you just said. Don't confuse it with the 再说 in 先…再说 ("do X first, deal with it later").

    Watch out

    • It reinforces a decision — it adds backing, not just a neutral extra fact.
    Português

再说 acumula uma razão extra, muitas vezes definitiva, para apoiar uma decisão — "além disso, além do mais, enfim." É o "e mais uma coisa…" que fecha o argumento.

    Estrutura: …… ,再说 ……

Não compre — enfim, você não precisa.

Lembre-se: 再说 = 'e além do MAIS…' — adiciona uma razão que corrobora o que acabou de dizer. Não confunda com o 再说 em 先…再说 ("faça X primeiro, resolva depois").

    Cuidado

    • Reforça uma decisão — adiciona respaldo, não apenas um fato extra neutro.
    5.6

    可是 / 但是 — "mas"

    English

可是 and 但是 are the bread-and-butter words for "but." 但是 is a shade more formal and emphatic; 可是 a touch softer. Otherwise they swap freely, and both happily follow 虽然 ("although").

Structure: Statement ,可是 / 但是 + Contrary Statement

    I我wǒlike喜欢xǐ huanhim他tābut,可是kě shìhe他tādoesn't不bùlike喜欢xǐ huanme我wǒ。

Remember: 但是 = firmer/formal, 可是 = softer/casual — twins otherwise. Both pair with 虽然 (虽然…但是…), and Chinese happily keeps both halves, unlike English ("Although… but…" is fine in Chinese).

    Watch out

Remember: bottom first, top last — read 分之 as "out of": 四分之三 = "of four parts (四分), three (之三)" = ¾. Percent is just 百分之 ("out of 100") + the number: 百分之五十 = 50%.

    Watch out

    • ¾ is 四分之三, never 三分之四 — getting the order backwards flips the fraction.
    Português

O chinês constrói uma fração de trás para frente: denominador + 分之 + numerador — o número de baixo vem primeiro. Encaixa no hábito da língua do grande para o pequeno (inteiro primeiro, depois a fatia). Porcentagens são apenas frações "de cada 100": 百分之 + número.

知道 … 疑问词 … 吗? — embutir uma pergunta dentro de uma pergunta com 吗

    English

Here's a structure that looks like two questions but is really one. 吗 can close a clause that embeds a question word — "do you know who / what / where …?" The front carries a verb of knowing (知道, 了解, 认识), and the whole thing stays a plain yes/no question.

    Structure: Confirmation (知道 …) + embedded Question + 吗?

    you你nǐknow知道zhī dàohe他tāis是shìwho谁shéi吗ma?

Do you know who he is?

    she她tādid say说过shuō guoshe她tālives住zhù在zàiwhere哪儿nǎr吗ma?

Did she say where she lives?

Remember: the 吗 makes it yes/no; the 谁 / 哪儿 inside is just part of the embedded clause. "Do you know [who he is]?" — you're asking whether they know, not "who?". Answer 知道 / 不知道.

    Watch out

    • The lead verb is one of knowing/saying: 知道, 了解, 明白, 认识, 说过.
    Português

Aqui está uma estrutura que parece duas perguntas, mas é realmente uma. 吗 pode fechar uma cláusula que embute uma palavra interrogativa — "você sabe quem / o que / onde ...?" A parte frontal carrega um verbo de conhecimento (知道, 了解, 认识), e a coisa toda continua sendo uma simples pergunta de sim/não.

    Estrutura: Confirmation (知道 …) + embedded Question + 吗?

    you你nǐknow知道zhī dàohe他tāis是shìwho谁shéi吗ma?

    Você sabe quem ele é?

    she她tādid say说过shuō guoshe她tālives住zhù在zàiwhere哪儿nǎr吗ma?

    Ela disse onde mora?

Lembre-se: o 吗 torna é sim/não; o 谁 / 哪儿 dentro é apenas parte da cláusula embutida. "Você sabe [quem ele é]?" — você está perguntando se eles sabem, não "quem?". Responda 知道 / 不知道.

    Cuidado

    • O verbo inicial é um de saber/dizer: 知道, 了解, 明白, 认识, 说过.

    … 吧 ,…… ;… 吧 ,…… — ponderar duas opções

    English

Echo 吧 across two options and you lay out a dilemma — "if A …, but if B …." It has an indecisive, no-win ring, and the two options are usually both unappealing.

    Structure: Option 1 + 吧,…… ;Option 2 + 吧,……

    in winter冬天dōng tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàicold冷lěngin summer;夏天xià tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàihot热rè。

Go in winter and it's too cold; go in summer and it's too hot.

not不bùtell him说shuō吧bahe,他tāwill会huìget it wrong做错zuò cuòtell him;说shuō吧bahe,他tāwon't不bùbe happy高兴gāo xìng。

If I don't tell him he'll get it wrong; if I do, he'll be upset.

Remember: doubled 吧 = a no-win fork — "do A 吧, downside; do B 吧, downside." Picture a shrug at each branch: whichever you pick, it stings.

    Watch out

    • Both options should carry a drawback — that's what gives the pattern its trapped, can't-win feel.
    Português

Repetir 吧 entre duas opções estabelece uma dilema — "se A ..., mas se B ...." Tem um tom indeciso, sem saída, e as duas opções costumam ser ambas impopulares.

    Estrutura: Option 1 + 吧,…… ;Option 2 + 吧,……

    in winter冬天dōng tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàicold冷lěngin summer;夏天xià tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàihot热rè。

Vá no inverno e faz muito frio; vá no verão e faz muito calor.

not不bùtell him说shuō吧bahe,他tāwill会huìget it wrong做错zuò cuòtell him;说shuō吧bahe,他tāwon't不bùbe happy高兴gāo xìng。

Se eu não contar, ele vai errar; se contar, vai ficar chateado.

Lembre-se: duplicado 吧 = um beco sem saída — "faça A 吧, desvantagem; faça B 吧, desvantagem." Imagine um encolher de ombros em cada ramificação: qual escolher, dói.

    Cuidado

    • Ambas as opções devem carregar uma desvantagem — é isso que dá ao padrão sua sensação de preso, sem vitória possível.

    …… 的 — a partícula modal 的

    English

A sentence-final 的 can add a tone of certainty or reassurance — "(it) definitely (is / will be)." It often rides with 会 or 一定会, sealing a promise or a confident prediction.

    Structure: Statement (+ 会 …) + 的

Remember: this 的 = a spoken full stop of conviction — "trust me, it's so." It's not the possessive 的. It loves a 会 / 一定会 ahead of it: 会成功的 ("you will make it").

    Watch out

    • Don't read this 的 as "of / 's" — here it carries tone, not ownership.
    Português

Um 的 final de frase pode adicionar um tom de certeza ou tranquilidade — "(ela) definitivamente (é / será)." Frequentemente acompanha 会 ou 一定会, selando uma promessa ou uma previsão confiante.

Lembre-se: este 的 = um ponto final falado de convicção — "confie em mim, é assim mesmo." Não é o 的 possessivo. Adora um 会 / 一定会 antes dele: 会成功的 ("você vai conseguir").

    并 + 不 / 没 — negação enfática

并 in front of a negative pushes back against an expectation — "(it's) actually not, contrary to what you'd think." Because it counters an assumption, it's the go-to for disagreeing or correcting. It only pairs with 不 or 没.

    Watch out

    • 让 covers both "make" and "let" — context decides which.

Estrutura: 通过 + Place / Exam (verbo) · 通过 + Method / Agent ,…… (preposição)

    I我wǒpassed通过tōng guò了lethis这个zhè geexam考试kǎo shì。

    Aprovamos este exame.

    we我们wǒ menthrough通过tōng guòhis他tā的defriend朋友péng youfound找到zhǎo dào了lehim他tā。

O encontramos através de seu amigo.

Lembre-se: 通过 = "passar por" — através de um exame/lugar (verbo: 通过考试) ou através de um método/intermediário (preposição: 通过朋友 "via um amigo"). Compare com 经过, que se inclina mais para "após um processo.".

    Cuidado

    • Como preposição, ela introduz um meio antes da oração principal: 通过努力,他成功了.

    来自 — "vir de"

    English

来自 is one compact verb for a source or origin — "come / originate from." It's more formal than 从 … 来, perfect for introductions, and it stretches to abstract sources too.

Structure: Subject + 来自 + Place / Source

    I我wǒcome from来自lái zìChina中国Zhōng guó。

    I'm from China.

my我wǒ的dethis这个zhè geidea想法xiǎng fǎcomes from来自lái zìeveryday life生活shēng huó。

This idea of mine comes from everyday life.

Remember: 来自 = "comes from" in one tidy word (来 "come" + 自 "from"). Great for intros (我来自…) and abstract origins (灵感来自…, "inspiration comes from…"). Casual version: 从…来.

    Watch out

    • It takes its source directly, with no 从: 来自中国 ✓, not 从来自中国.
    Português

来自 é um verbo compacto para fonte ou origem — "vir / originar-se de." É mais formal que 从 … 来, perfeito para apresentações, e estende-se também a fontes abstratas.

Estrutura: Subject + 来自 + Place / Source

    I我wǒcome from来自lái zìChina中国Zhōng guó。

    Sou da China.

my我wǒ的dethis这个zhè geidea想法xiǎng fǎcomes from来自lái zìeveryday life生活shēng huó。

Essa minha ideia vem do cotidiano.

Lembre-se: 来自 = "vem de" em uma palavra só (来 "vir" + 自 "de"). Ótimo para intros (我来自…) e origens abstratas (灵感来自…, "inspiração vem de…"). Versão casual: 从…来.

    Cuidado

    • Ela recebe sua fonte diretamente, sem 从: 来自中国 ✓, não 从来自中国.

    来 — o verbo "fantasma"

    English

A bare 来 can stand in for a more specific verb — "(let me) do it, your turn, have a go" — when the real action is obvious from context. It's a short phrase ending in 来 (sometimes 吧), usually with 我 or 你.

    Structure: (让 +) Subject + 来 (+ 吧)

    I我wǒdo it来lái吧ba。

    Let me do it.

    you你nǐwrite写xiě得denicely好看hǎo kànyou,你nǐdo it来lái吧ba。

You write nicely — you do it.

Remember: this 来 does NOT mean "come" — it's a placeholder for the obvious verb, like English "I'll get this." 我来 ("I'll do it"), 你来 ("your turn"), 让他自己来 ("let him have a go").

    Watch out

    • Only use it when the real action is clear from context — otherwise name the verb.
    Português

Um 来 nu pode substituir um verbo mais específico — "(deixa eu) fazer isso, sua vez, tente" — quando a ação real é óbvia pelo contexto. É uma frase curta terminando em 来 (às vezes 吧), geralmente com 我 ou 你.

    Estrutura: (让 +) Subject + 来 (+ 吧)

    I我wǒdo it来lái吧ba。

    Deixa eu resolver isso.

    you你nǐwrite写xiě得denicely好看hǎo kànyou,你nǐdo it来lái吧ba。

Você escreve bem — faça isso.

Lembre-se: este 来 NÃO significa "vir" — é um placeholder para o verbo óbvio, como inglês "I'll get this.". 我来 ("Vou resolver"), 你来 ("Sua vez"), 让他自己来 ("Deixa ele tentar").

    Cuidado

    • Use apenas quando a ação real for clara pelo contexto — caso contrário, nomeie o verbo.

不用 — "não precisa, não há necessidade"

    English

不用 means "(there's) no need to, don't have to" — it lifts an obligation. The classic trap: the negative of 要 ("need to") is 不用, not 不要 (which means "don't / don't want").

Structure: Subject + 不用 + Verb Phrase

    no need to不用bú yòngworry担心dān xīn。

    No need to worry.

children孩子hái zidon't need to不用bú yòngbuy买mǎia ticket票piào。

Children don't need to buy a ticket.

Remember: 要 ("need to") → 不用 ("needn't"), NOT 不要. 不用 cancels a need; 不要 is a prohibition ("don't"); 不能 = "can't"; 不应该 = "shouldn't." Pick by which one you're denying.

    Watch out

    • 不用谢 ("you're welcome") is literally "no need to thank" — the same 不用.
    Português

不用 significa "(não há) necessidade de, não tem de" — elimina uma obrigação. A armadilha clássica: o negativo de 要 ("precisa") é 不用, não 不要 (que significa "não / não quer").

Estrutura: Subject + 不用 + Verb Phrase

    no need to不用bú yòngworry担心dān xīn。

    Não precisa se preocupar.

children孩子hái zidon't need to不用bú yòngbuy买mǎia ticket票piào。

    Crianças não precisam comprar ingresso.

Lembre-se: 要 ("precisa") → 不用 ("não precisa"), NÃO 不要. 不用 cancela uma necessidade; 不要 é uma proibição ("não faça"); 不能 = "não pode"; 不应该 = "não deveria." Escolha pela qual você está negando.

    Cuidado

    • 不用谢 ("de nada") é literalmente "não há necessidade de agradecer" — o mesmo 不用.
    13.2

    得 + Verbo — "ter que, dever"

    English

The auxiliary 得 — read děi here — is a blunt, spoken "have to, must," a practical necessity.

    Structure: Subject + 得 + Verb Phrase

    we我们wǒ menhave to得děigo走zǒu了le。

    We have to go now.

the time时间shí jiāngetting late不早bù zǎo了leI,我wǒhave to得děigo home回家huí jiā了le。

It's getting late — I have to head home.

Remember: 得 = děi = "gotta." Its negative borrows 不用 ("needn't"), not 不得. And mind the reading: this is děi ("must"), a world away from the de of complements (跑得快) or the particles 的 / 地.

    Watch out

    • One character, three readings: děi (must), de (complement marker), dé (得到 "obtain"). Context picks it.
    Português

O auxiliar 得 — lido děi aqui — é um "ter que, devo" coloquial e direto, uma necessidade prática.

    Estrutura: Subject + 得 + Verb Phrase

    we我们wǒ menhave to得děigo走zǒu了le。

    Temos que ir agora.

the time时间shí jiāngetting late不早bù zǎo了leI,我wǒhave to得děigo home回家huí jiā了le。

Está ficando tarde — tenho que ir para casa.

Lembre-se: 得 = děi = "gotta." Seu negativo empresta 不用 ("não precisa"), não 不得. E cuide na leitura: este é děi ("devo"), muito distante do de de complementos (跑得快) ou das partículas 的 / 地.

    Cuidado

    • Um caractere, três leituras: děi (dever), de (marcador de complemento), dé (得到 "obter"). O contexto decide.

    并 + Verbo — "e (também)"

    English

Between two verb phrases, 并 links them as "and, and also." It's picky: it joins verbs or clauses (never nouns — that's 和's job), usually two-syllable verbs, with a considered, written ring.

    Structure: Verb Phrase 1 + 并 + Verb Phrase 2

    I我wǒagree with同意tóng yìand并bìngsupport支持zhī chíyour你nǐ的dedecision决定jué dìng。

I agree with and support your decision.

the meeting会议huì yìdiscussed讨论tǎo lùnand并bìngapproved通过tōng guò了lethe plan计划jì huà。

The meeting discussed and approved the plan.

Remember: 并 joins verbs/clauses, 和 joins nouns. "Discussed 并 approved" (verbs) ✓; "tea 和 coffee" (nouns) ✓. 并 is the formal "and" for actions.

    Watch out

    • Don't use 并 between nouns — 茶并咖啡 ✗.
    Português

Entre duas frases verbais, 并 as liga como "e, e também." É exigente: une verbos ou orações (nunca substantivos — esse é o trabalho do 和), geralmente verbos de dois sílabas, com um tom considerado e escrito.

    Estrutura: Verb Phrase 1 + 并 + Verb Phrase 2

    I我wǒagree with同意tóng yìand并bìngsupport支持zhī chíyour你nǐ的dedecision决定jué dìng。

Concordo com e apoio sua decisão.

the meeting会议huì yìdiscussed讨论tǎo lùnand并bìngapproved通过tōng guò了lethe plan计划jì huà。

    A reunião discutiu e aprovou o plano.

    Lembre-se: 并 une verbos/orações, 和 une substantivos. "Discutiu 并 aprovou" (verbos) ✓; "chá 和 café" (substantivos) ✓. 并 é o "e" formal para ações.

    Cuidado

    • Não use 并 entre substantivos — 茶并咖啡 ✗.

    少 + Verbo — "fazer … menos"

    English

少 before a verb means do less of it — the staple of advice and gentle scolding. The bit that flips for English speakers: 少 comes before the verb, where English puts "less" after.

    Structure: 少 + Verb (+ Object)

    please请qǐngless少shǎoadd放fànga bit of点diǎnsalt盐yán。

Use a bit less salt, please.

    less少shǎotalk说shuōnonsense废话fèi huà!

    Quit the babbling!

Remember: 少 / 多 go BEFORE the verb — 少喝水 ("drink less water"), the reverse of English order. It softens a blunt "don't": 少管闲事 ("mind your own business," lit. "meddle less").

    Watch out

    • Never 喝少水 — the amount-word leads: 少喝水, 多吃饭.
    Português

少 antes de um verbo significa fazer menos disso — o pilar de conselhos e repreensões suaves. A parte que inverte para falantes de inglês: 少 vem antes do verbo, onde o inglês coloca "less" depois.

    Estrutura: 少 + Verb (+ Object)

    please请qǐngless少shǎoadd放fànga bit of点diǎnsalt盐yán。

Use um pouco menos de sal, por favor.

    less少shǎotalk说shuōnonsense废话fèi huà!

    Pare de dar trela!

Lembre-se: 少 / 多 vêm ANTES do verbo — 少喝水 ("beba menos água"), o inverso da ordem inglesa. Suaviza um "não" blunter: 少管闲事 ("cuide da vida alheia", lit. "ingerir menos").

    Cuidado

    • Nunca 喝少水 — a palavra de quantidade lidera: 少喝水, 多吃饭.
    14.3

    多 + Verbo — "fazer … mais"

    English

多 before a verb means do more of it. Like its twin 少, it sits before the verb — exactly where English puts "more" after ("eat more" → 多吃).

    Structure: 多 + Verb (+ Object)

    more多duōeat吃chīa bit点diǎn。

    Eat a bit more.

grandpa爷爷yé yeyou,你nǐshould要yàomore多duōgo out出去chū qùfor walks走走zǒu zou。

Grandpa, you should go out for walks more.

Remember: "eat more" flips to "more-eat" (多吃). 多 and 少 both lead the verb — that front position is the whole trick, and it's the opposite of English.

    Watch out

    • It's the mirror of 少 — both are everyday advice words (多喝水, 少熬夜).
    Português

多 antes de um verbo significa fazer mais disso. Como seu par 少, fica antes do verbo — exatamente onde o inglês coloca "more" depois ("eat more" → 多吃).

    Estrutura: 多 + Verb (+ Object)

    more多duōeat吃chīa bit点diǎn。

    Coma um pouco mais.

grandpa爷爷yé yeyou,你nǐshould要yàomore多duōgo out出去chū qùfor walks走走zǒu zou。

Avô, você deve sair para passeios mais.

    Lembre-se: "comer mais" vira "mais-comer" (多吃). 多 e 少 ambos lideram o verbo — essa posição frontal é todo o truque, e é o oposto do inglês.

    Cuidado

    • É o espelho de 少 — ambas são palavras de aconselhamento cotidianas (多喝水, 少熬夜).

    English

到 after a verb, plus a time or event, works like "until." It often takes 一直 to stress the unbroken stretch. The structural catch: when the verb has an object, you repeat the verb.

    Structure: (一直 +) Verb + 到 + Time / Event · Verb + Obj + Verb + 到 + Time

    Palavras离合词 — separáveis (verbo+objeto)

    English

A surprising number of "verbs" are secretly verb + object pairs — 见面 ("meet" = see-face), 睡觉 ("sleep" = sleep-a-sleep), 帮忙 ("help" = do-a-favour), 结婚 ("marry" = tie-marriage). Other words slot between the two halves, and you can't add another object after the whole word.

Structure: Verb + (insert) + Object

    We've met before.

    he他tādid帮bāng了leme我wǒa一个yí gefavour忙máng。

    不管 … 都 / 也 … — "não importa" (falado)

    English

不管 … 都 / 也 … says the outcome holds whatever the case — "no matter (what / how) …, still …." The catch: the first clause must contain an open variable — a choice (A 还是 B / A-not-A) or a question word (谁, 什么, 怎么…). It's the conversational option.

    Structure: 不管 + (Question Word / choice) ,(Subject +) 都 / 也 + Result

no matter不管bù guǎnyou你nǐwear穿chuānwhat什么shén meall,都dōulook good好看hǎo kàn。

no matter不管bù guǎnwhat happens怎么样zěn me yàngwe,我们wǒ menall都dōumust要yàoproperly好好hǎo hǎoprepare准备zhǔn bèi。

No matter what, we must prepare properly.

Remember: 不管 needs something OPEN after it — a question word (谁/什么/怎么) or an "A还是B / A-not-A" choice — then 都 / 也 nails the result down regardless. 不管 = spoken; 无论 / 不论 = formal (next).

    Watch out

    • Without an open variable it's wrong: 不管你穿什么 ✓, but you can't say 不管这件衣服….
    Português

    不管 … 都 / 也 … afirma que o resultado se mantém qualquer seja o caso — "não importa (o que / como) …, ainda assim …." A pegadinha: a primeira cláusula deve conter uma variável aberta — uma escolha (A ou B / A-Não-A) ou uma palavra interrogativa (quem, o quê, como…). É a opção conversacional.

    Estrutura: 不管 + (Question Word / choice) ,(Subject +) 都 / 也 + Result

no matter不管bù guǎnyou你nǐwear穿chuānwhat什么shén meall,都dōulook good好看hǎo kàn。

Não importa o que você vista, fica bom em você.

no matter不管bù guǎnwhat happens怎么样zěn me yàngwe,我们wǒ menall都dōumust要yàoproperly好好hǎo hǎoprepare准备zhǔn bèi。

Não importa o que, devemos nos preparar adequadamente.

Lembre-se: 不管 precisa de algo ABERTO após ele — uma palavra interrogativa (quem/o quê/como) ou uma escolha "A ou B / A-Não-A" — então 都 / 也 fixa o resultado independentemente. 不管 = falado; 无论 / 不论 = formal (próximo).

    Cuidado

    • Sem uma variável aberta está errado: 不管你穿什么 ✓, mas você não pode dizer 不管这件衣服….
    18.2

    无论 / 不论 … 都 / 也 … — "não importa, independentemente"

    English

无论 (or 不论) is the more formal "no matter, regardless of" — grammatically identical to 不管. The clause after it likewise holds a question word (多么, 什么, 谁…) or a choice.

    Structure: 无论 / 不论 + (Question Word / choice) ,都 / 也 + Result

no matter无论wú lùnhow多么duō mesuccessful成功chéng gōnghe,他tāalways都dōufeels觉得jué dehimself自己zì jǐnot不够bú gòugood enough好hǎo。

No matter how hot it gets, we have to keep going.

Remember: 无论 / 不论 = the written 不管 — same grammar, same need for an open variable + 都 / 也. Speech → 不管; writing → 无论.

    Watch out

    • The same rule applies: the following clause needs a question word or a choice, never a flat statement.
    Português

无论 (ou 不论) é o "não importa, independente de" mais formal — gramaticalmente idêntico a 不管. A cláusula após ele também contém uma palavra interrogativa (quanto, o quê, quem…) ou uma escolha.

    Estrutura: 无论 / 不论 + (Question Word / choice) ,都 / 也 + Result

no matter无论wú lùnhow多么duō mesuccessful成功chéng gōnghe,他tāalways都dōufeels觉得jué dehimself自己zì jǐnot不够bú gòugood enough好hǎo。

    Lembre-se: 无论 / 不论 = o 不管 escrito — mesma gramática, mesma necessidade de variável aberta + 都 / 也. Fala → 不管; escrita → 无论.

Remember: 连 X 都 = "even X" — and you need BOTH words. English keeps only "even"; Chinese frames it as 连 (the surprising item) … 都 (sweeps it in). The item leaps to the front: 连狗肉都吃, never 吃连狗肉.

    Watch out

    • Dropping the 都 breaks it — 连 always needs its 都 / 也 partner.
    Português

连 … 都 (也) destaca um caso surpreendente — "até (mesmo)…." O detalhe que falantes de inglês perdem: você deve manter ambas as partes (inglês reduz a apenas "even"). O item destacado — até um objeto — salta para o início.

    Cuidado

    • Remover o 都 quebra a estrutura — 连 sempre precisa de seu parceiro 都 / 也.

    疑问词 + 都 — "todo / qualquer"

    English

A question word + 都 sweeps over all cases — "everyone, anything, anywhere, whenever." Add 不 / 没 and it flips to the total negative: "none, nothing, nowhere."

    Structure: Question Word + 都 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéi都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    Everyone loves good food.

    I我wǒanywhere哪儿nǎr都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto go去qù。

I don't want to go anywhere.

Remember: question word + 都 = "all / every"; + 不 / 没 = "none / nothing." 谁都 (everyone), 什么都 (everything), 哪儿都 (everywhere), 怎么都 (no matter how) — then a 不 / 没 turns each into its negative (什么都不知道).

    Watch out

    • The question word here is the indefinite "any," not a real question — no question mark.
    Português

Uma palavra interrogativa + 都 abrange todos os casos — "todo mundo, qualquer coisa, qualquer lugar, quando quer que seja." Adicione 不 / 没 e vira a negativa total: "nenhum, nada, lugar nenhum."

    Estrutura: Question Word + 都 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéi都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    Todo mundo ama boa comida.

    I我wǒanywhere哪儿nǎr都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto go去qù。

Não quero ir para lugar nenhum.

Lembre-se: palavra interrogativa + 都 = "todo / cada"; + 不 / 没 = "nenhum / nada." 谁都 (todo mundo), 什么都 (tudo), 哪儿都 (em qualquer lugar), 怎么都 (não importa como) — então um 不 / 没 transforma cada um em sua negativa (什么都不知道).

    Cuidado

    • A palavra interrogativa aqui é o "qualquer" indefinido, não uma pergunta real — sem ponto de interrogação.
    24.3

    A + 是 + B + 的 + Number + 倍 — "X vezes mais"

    English

倍 counts multiples — "A 是 B 的 N 倍" = "A is N times B." Watch the maths: N倍 is the total, ×N — 三倍 is "three times (as much)," not "three times more."

    Structure: A + 是 + B + 的 + Number + 倍

his他tānow现在xiàn zài的desalary工资gōng zīis是shìtwo years ago两年前liǎng nián qián的dethree times三倍sān bèi。

    一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 … — "não … de jeito nenhum"

    English

    一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 is the emphatic, absolute negative — "not (even) … at all, not one bit."

    Structure: Subject + 一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Adjective / Verb

    you你nǐat all一点yì diǎn也yěnot不bùfat胖pàng。

    You're not fat at all.

    I我wǒat all一点yì diǎn都dōudidn't没méiunderstand听懂tīng dǒng。

    I didn't understand a single bit.

Remember: it's the 也 / 都 sitting between 一点 and 不 / 没 that makes it absolute — "not even the smallest bit." A bare 一点不 / 一点没 (no 也/都) is noticeably weaker.

    Watch out

    • Keep all the pieces: 一点 + 也/都 + 不/没 — drop the 也/都 and the "at all" force fades.
    Português

    一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 é a negativa enfática e absoluta — "não (nem) … de jeito nenhum, nem um pouquinho."

    Estrutura: Subject + 一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Adjective / Verb

Você não é gordo de jeito nenhum.

    I我wǒat all一点yì diǎn都dōudidn't没méiunderstand听懂tīng dǒng。

    Não entendi absolutamente nada.

    Lembre-se: é o 也 / 都 sentado entre 一点 e 不 / 没 que o torna absoluto — "nem o menor pouquinho." Um 一点不 / 一点没 solto (sem 也/都) é notavelmente mais fraco.

    Cuidado

    • Mantenha todas as peças: 一点 + 也/都 + 不/没 — tire o 也/都 e a força de "de jeito nenhum" desaparece.

不知道 … 好 — "não tem certeza do que é melhor"

    English

End a clause with 好 after 不知道 and you get "(I) don't know what would be best" — that stuck, can't-decide feeling. It's often 才好.

    Structure: Subject + 不知道 + Question Phrase + (才) 好

Remember: the trailing 好 = "…would be best" — 不知道怎么办才好 ("don't know what on earth to do for the best"). The 才 sharpens the dilemma.

    Watch out

    • The 好 sits at the very end, after the question phrase — it's "what's best," not "good."
    Português

    Lembre-se: a partícula final 好 = "…would be best" — 不知道怎么办才好 ("não sei o que fazer para o melhor"). O 才 intensifica o dilema.

    Cuidado

    • O 好 fica no final, depois da frase interrogativa — significa "o que é melhor," não "bom."

The frame Adj 是 Adj,但是 … grudgingly concedes a quality before pulling back — "(it's) … alright, but …." It's a debater's move: admit the point, then keep your reservation.

    Structure: Adjective + 是 + (same) Adjective ,但是 / 就是 ……

    work工作gōng zuòbusy忙máng是shìbusy忙mángbut,但是dàn shìI'm我wǒvery很hěnhappy开心kāi xīn。

Remember: the doubled adjective concedes ("busy, sure…"), the 但是 / 就是 clause delivers the catch. 忙是忙,但是… = "busy it may be, but…". Note: 就是 here means "it's just (that)," not "is."

    Watch out

    • The adjective must repeat exactly around 是: 好看是好看, not 好看是漂亮.

    一 … 就 … — "logo que / assim que"

    English

一 A 就 B binds two events tight — "as soon as A, (then) B," with B following A at once or automatically. It doubles as "whenever A, B" for a habitual link.

    Structure: Subject + 一 + Event 1 ,就 + Event 2

    Watch out

    • Don't read this 一 as "one" — it's the "the instant…" trigger, paired with 就.

    Watch out

    English

    Watch out

    • 刚才 is a time word — 刚才的事 ("the thing just now") works, but 刚的事 doesn't.
    Português

Ambos apontam para uma pessoa ou coisa, mas de ângulos diferentes. 关于 introduz o tópico / assunto ("sobre, sobre o assunto de"). 对于 introduz o alvo de uma atitude ou ação ("para, no que diz respeito a") — geralmente com uma opinião ou conclusão anexada.

about关于guān yúthis这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tíeveryone,大家dà jiāhas有yǒuwhat什么shén meviews看法kàn fǎ?

Sobre esta questão, quais são os pensamentos de todos?

with对于duì yúour我们wǒ men的dework工作gōng zuòthe boss,老板lǎo bǎnvery很hěnsatisfied满意mǎn yì。

    English

离 measures the gap between two points — "away from" (for distance). 从 marks a starting point in space or time — "from" (where motion or time begins).

    from从cóngtomorrow明天míng tiānon开始kāi shǐI,我wǒwon't不bùsmoke抽烟chōu yān了le。

Starting from tomorrow, I'm quitting smoking.

    my home我家wǒ jiāfrom离líthe office公司gōng sīvery很hěnclose近jìn。

My home is very close to the office.

Remember: 离 = the GAP ("how far apart," pairs with 远 / 近); 从 = the START ("where it begins"). 我家离公司很近 ("close to") vs 从明天开始 ("starting tomorrow"). Distance → 离; origin point → 从.

    Watch out

    • 离 needs two endpoints and a distance word (离…远/近); 从 needs a route or a start time (从…走, 从…开始).
    Português

离 mede o espaço entre dois pontos — "longe de" (para distância). 从 marca um ponto de partida no espaço ou tempo — "a partir de" (onde o movimento ou o tempo começa).

    from从cóngtomorrow明天míng tiānon开始kāi shǐI,我wǒwon't不bùsmoke抽烟chōu yān了le。

A partir de amanhã, vou parar de fumar.

    my home我家wǒ jiāfrom离líthe office公司gōng sīvery很hěnclose近jìn。

Minha casa fica muito perto do escritório.

    Lembre-se: 离 = o ESPAÇO Vazio ("a quanta distância", combinado com 远 / 近); 从 = o INÍCIO ("onde começa"). 我家离公司很近 ("perto") vs 从明天开始 ("começando amanhã"). Distância → 离; ponto de origem → 从.

    Cuidado

    • 离 precisa de dois pontos extremos e uma palavra de distância (离…远/近); 从 precisa de uma rota ou hora de início (从…走, 从…开始).

反而 vs 相反 — "ao contrário" vs "o oposto"

    English

反而 is an adverb ("instead, on the contrary") that sits before the verb inside one sentence. 相反 is an adjective / conjunction meaning "(the) opposite" — it links or opens a sentence, or describes a thing as opposite.

eating吃chīfruit水果shuǐ guǒnot only不但bú dànno没méibenefit好处hǎo chuinstead,反而fǎn érhas有yǒuharm坏处huài chu

Eating fruit not only does no good — instead it does harm.

    my我wǒ的deidea想法xiǎng fǎ跟gēnhis他tāthe opposite相反xiāng fǎn。

My idea is the opposite of his.

Remember: 反而 = an ADVERB ("instead," before the verb), marking a contrary RESULT; 相反 = "the opposite" (跟…相反, or 相反,… "on the contrary,"). One does a job inside the clause; the other names or links an opposite.

    Watch out

    • You can't swap them: 反而有坏处 ✓ (adverb), 跟他相反 ✓ (adjective) — but not 跟他反而.
    Português

反而 é um advérbio ("ao contrário, pelo contrário") que fica antes do verbo dentro de uma oração. 相反 é um adjetivo / conjunção significando "(o) oposto" — ele liga ou abre uma oração, ou descreve uma coisa como oposta.

eating吃chīfruit水果shuǐ guǒnot only不但bú dànno没méibenefit好处hǎo chuinstead,反而fǎn érhas有yǒuharm坏处huài chu

Comer frutas não faz bem — ao contrário, faz mal.

    my我wǒ的deidea想法xiǎng fǎ跟gēnhis他tāthe opposite相反xiāng fǎn。

Minha ideia é o oposto da dele.

Lembre-se: 反而 = um ADVÉRBIO ("ao contrário," antes do verbo), marcando um RESULTADO contrário; 相反 = "o oposto" (跟…相反, ou 相反,… "ao contrário"). Um atua dentro da oração; o outro nomeia ou liga algo oposto.

    Cuidado

    • Você não pode trocá-los: 反而有坏处 ✓ (advérbio), 跟他相反 ✓ (adjetivo) — mas não 跟他反而.

    肯定 vs 确定 vs 一定 — "com certeza / com certeza" {⟨number⟩}

    English

Three "certainty" words, three jobs: 肯定 = "definitely / to affirm" (a confident assertion). 确定 = "be sure / confirm" — certainty you've checked. 一定 = "certainly / be sure to" — an expectation or insistence.

    you你nǐsure确定què dìnghe他tāwill会huìcome来lái吗ma?

    Are you sure he'll come?

    he他tādefinitely肯定kěn dìngwill会huìcome来lái。

    He'll definitely come.

Remember: 肯定 asserts a fact confidently; 确定 is certainty you've VERIFIED; 一定 is expectation/insistence. 一定会来 = "will surely come" (expectation); 一定要小心 = "be sure to be careful" (insistence); 你确定吗? = "are you sure (have you checked)?".

    Watch out

    • 确定 is about your own checked certainty; 肯定 asserts the fact itself.
    Português

Três palavras de "certeza", três funções: 肯定 = "definitivamente / afirmar" (uma afirmação confiante). 确定 = "ter certeza / confirmar" — certeza que você verificou. 一定 = "certamente / ter certeza de" — uma expectativa ou insistência.

    you你nǐsure确定què dìnghe他tāwill会huìcome来lái吗ma?

Você tem certeza de que ele virá?

    he他tādefinitely肯定kěn dìngwill会huìcome来lái。

    Ele certamente virá.

Lembre-se: 肯定 afirma um fato com confiança; 确定 é certeza VERIFICADA; 一定 é expectativa/insistência. 一定会来 = "virá certamente" (expectativa); 一定要小心 = "tenha certeza de cuidado" (insistência); 你确定吗? = "você tem certeza (verificou)?"

    Cuidado

    • 确定 trata da sua própria certeza verificada; 肯定 afirma o próprio fato.

适合 vs 合适 — "combinar / servir" vs "adequado / adequado"

    English

Same two characters, flipped — and the flip changes the grammar. 适合 is a verb ("to suit") and takes an object. 合适 is an adjective ("suitable") and behaves like other adjectives (很合适, 最合适的).

    this这个zhè gecolour颜色yán sèdoesn't不bùsuit适合shì héhim他tā。

    This colour doesn't suit him.

    black黑色hēi sèis才cái是shìthe most最zuìsuitable合适hé shì的de。

    Black is the most suitable.

Remember: 适合 = VERB + object (适合我, "suits me"); 合适 = ADJECTIVE (很合适, 最合适的, no object). The character order is the giveaway: 适合 takes an object, 合适 describes.

    Watch out

    • Don't give 合适 an object: 这个适合你 ✓ but 这个合适你 ✗ → 这个对你很合适 / 这个很合适.
    Português

Mesmos dois caracteres, invertidos — e a inversão muda a gramática. 适合 é um verbo ("servir / combinar") e leva objeto. 合适 é um adjetivo ("adequado") e se comporta como outros adjetivos (很合适, 最合适的).

    this这个zhè gecolour颜色yán sèdoesn't不bùsuit适合shì héhim他tā。

Esta cor não serve a ele.

    black黑色hēi sèis才cái是shìthe most最zuìsuitable合适hé shì的de。

    Preto é o mais adequado.

Lembre-se: 适合 = VERBO + objeto (适合我, "serve a mim"); 合适 = ADJETIVO (很合适, 最合适的, sem objeto). A ordem dos caracteres é a dica: 适合 leva objeto, 合适 descreve.

    Cuidado

    • Não dê objeto a 合适: 这个适合你 ✓ mas 这个合适你 ✗ → 这个对你很合适 / 这个很合适.

以后 vs 的时候 — "depois" vs "quando / enquanto"

    English

Both attach to a time or event, but they pin different moments. 以后 means "after (something)" — the action follows it. 的时候 means "when / while (something is happening)" — the action lands during it.

    playing打dǎbasketball篮球lán qiúwhile的时候de shí houwill会huìsweat出汗chū hàn。

    You sweat while playing basketball.

after finishing打完dǎ wánbasketball篮球lán qiúafter以后yǐ hòuneed to要yàoshower洗澡xǐ zǎo。

After finishing basketball, you need to shower.

Remember: 的时候 = DURING (when/while); 以后 = AFTER. The verb tells you which: an ongoing verb takes 的时候 (打篮球的时候), a completed one takes 以后 (打完以后) — note the result word 完 that signals "finished."

    Watch out

    • 吃饭的时候 ("while eating") vs 吃完饭以后 ("after eating") — the 完 is the tell that you've crossed into 以后 territory.
    Português

Ambos se ligam a um tempo ou evento, mas marcam momentos diferentes. 以后 significa "depois (de)" — a ação o segue. 的时候 significa "quando / enquanto" — a ação ocorre durante ele.

    playing打dǎbasketball篮球lán qiúwhile的时候de shí houwill会huìsweat出汗chū hàn。

after finishing打完dǎ wánbasketball篮球lán qiúafter以后yǐ hòuneed to要yàoshower洗澡xǐ zǎo。

Depois de terminar o basquete, você precisa tomar banho.

Lembre-se: 的时候 = DURANTE (quando/enquanto); 以后 = DEPOIS. O verbo indica qual: um verbo contínuo leva 的时候 (打篮球的时候), um completado leva 以后 (打完以后) — note a palavra de resultado 完 que sinaliza "terminado."

    Cuidado

    • 吃饭的时候 ("enquanto come") vs 吃完饭以后 ("depois de comer") — o 完 é o indício de que você cruzou para o território do 以后.
