형용사 + 极了 — "…to the max" (극도로)

    English

When something is off the charts — the best, the worst, the most you've ever seen — tack 极了 (jíle) onto the adjective. 极 means "the furthest point, the extreme" (it's the 极 of 北极, the North Pole), so 好极了 reads literally as "good — all the way to the pole." It works for praise and complaints alike, and it lives in casual, spoken Chinese.

Unusually for a degree phrase, 极了 clamps straight onto the adjective with no 得 — and the 了 is welded on: drop it and the sentence is simply wrong.

Structure: Subject + Adjective + 极了 Literally: "[subject is] adjective — to the extreme."

    this这个zhè geidea主意zhǔ yigood好hǎoextremely极了jí le。

    This idea is perfect.

the college exam高考gāo kǎothat day那天nà tiānI,我wǒnervous紧张jǐn zhāngextremely极了jí le。

I was incredibly nervous on the day of the gaokao.

    that那个nà geboy男孩nán háiannoying讨厌tǎo yànextremely极了jí le!

    That boy is unbelievably annoying!

Remember: 极 = pole, the furthest point (北极 = North Pole). 好极了 pushes "good" all the way to the pole — and 极 never travels without its 了.

    Watch out

    • The 了 is non-negotiable: 好极了 ✓, never 好极.
    • No 得 — it attaches bare (好极了), unlike most degree complements (好得很).
    • 极了 already carries the emphasis, so don't pile on 很 or 非常: 好极了, never 很好极了.

形容词重叠 — doubling adjectives for warmth (AA / AABB)

    English

Repeat an adjective and it turns soft, warm, and vivid — less a cold fact, more a fond little picture. This doubling runs all through friendly, natural Chinese, especially for physical descriptions: colours, sizes, shapes.

A one-syllable adjective doubles as AA, usually with 的 before the noun — 大 ("big") → 大大的 ("nice and big, big and round"):

    Structure: A + A + 的 (+ Noun)

the baby宝宝bǎo bao的deeyes眼睛yǎn jīngbig and round大大的dà dà de。

The baby has big, round eyes.

tonight今晚jīn wǎn的demoon月亮yuè liàngnice and round圆圆的yuán yuán de。

The moon is lovely and round tonight.

A two-syllable adjective doubles as AABB — repeat each character, not the whole word: 高兴 → 高高兴兴, 干净 → 干干净净, 舒服 → 舒舒服服. Used as an adverb, the AABB form takes 地 before the verb:

I我wǒwant to想xiǎngcomfortably舒舒服服shū shū fú fú地delie躺tǎngon在zàithe sofa沙发上shā fā shàng。

I just want to lie comfortably on the sofa.

Remember: doubling softens and warms — 大大的眼睛 isn't a flat "big eyes," it's the affectionate "lovely big eyes" a parent would coo. AA + 的 paints a noun; AABB + 地 colours a verb.

    Watch out

    • Not every adjective doubles — 好吃, 便宜, 麻烦 are never said as 好好吃吃 / 便便宜宜. Stick to common physical descriptors until you've heard a form used for real.
    • A doubled adjective is already emphatic — never put 很 in front (很慢慢 is wrong).

    소파에 편하게 누워 있을 뿐이에요.

기억하세요: 중의법에서 형용사를 중복하면 부드러워지고 따뜻한 느낌이 생깁니다. 大大的眼睛은 단순한 '큰 눈'이 아니라, 부모가 애정을 담아 부를 때 쓰는 '귀여운 큰 눈'이라는 뉘앙스입니다. AA + 的은 명사를 수식하고, AABB + 地는 동사를 수식합니다.

    Watch out

    English

To say how an action is done, park the particle 地 (de) after an adjective — it is Chinese's "-ly." 高兴 ("happy") → 高兴地 ("happily"); 认真 ("careful") → 认真地 ("carefully"). The adverb always sits in front of the verb.

    Structure: Adjective + 地 + Verb Literally: "happy-ly — smiled."

    he他tāhappy高兴gāo xìng地desmiled笑xiào了le。

    He smiled happily.

the teacher老师lǎo shīcareful认真rèn zhēn地deread看kàn了lemy我的wǒ deessay作文zuò wén。

The teacher read my essay carefully.

Remember: 地 = "-ly". Three de's sound identical but split the work: 的 owns a noun (我的书), 地 drives a verb (慢慢地走), 得 rates the result (跑得快). The 地 here even carries 土 "earth" on its left — picture an adverb grounding how the verb is done.

    Watch out

    • This 地 is read de, not dì — same sound as 的 and 得, different job.
    • The adverb phrase comes before the verb, never after it.
    한국어

행동이 어떻게 이루어지는지를 표현할 때는 입체음(助词) 地 (de)를 형용사 뒤에 배치합니다. 이는 중국어의 "-ly" 부사화 마커입니다. 高兴("행복한") → 高兴地("행복하게"); 认真("신중하게") → 认真地("신중하게"). 이 부사 구절은 항상 동사 앞에 위치합니다.

    Structure: Adjective + 地 + Verb *문자 그대로: "행복-하게 — 미소 짓다."

    he他tāhappy高兴gāo xìng地desmiled笑xiào了le。

    Watch out

    • 이 地는 dì가 아닌 de로 읽습니다. — 的과 得과 같은 소리지만, 역할이 다릅니다.
    • 부사 구절은 동사 앞에 오며, 뒤에 올 수 없습니다.

    又 + 동사 + 了 — "(그것을) 다시 했다" (과거형)

    English

Something already happened one more time? Reach for 又 (yòu) — "again, once more." It looks backward at a repeat that's done, and it often carries a flick of annoyance, like English "again?!" (For "again" in the future, you want 再 instead — see the contrast below.)

    Structure: (Subject +) 又 + Verb + 了 Literally: "again — [verb] — (and it's happened)."

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    You're late again.

    again又yòurain下雨xià yǔ了le!

    It's raining again!

    today今天jīn tiānagain又yòuhave to要yàowork overtime加班jiā bān了le!

We've got to work overtime again today!

Remember: 又 looks back, 再 looks forward. 又来了 = "here we go again" (it happened); 再来一次 = "do it once more" (it will). Future 再 takes no 了; past 又 needs it.

    Watch out

    • 又 also works with negatives: 他又没来 ("he didn't come again").
    • For something about to repeat, pair it with 要: 又要…了 ("here it comes again").

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    너ared 늦었어 again.

    again又yòurain下雨xià yǔ了le!

    비가ared falling again!

    today今天jīn tiānagain又yòuhave to要yàowork overtime加班jiā bān了le!

    오늘도加班 again要做啊!

기억하세요: 又는 뒤를 look, 再는 ahead를 look. 又来了 = "여기가 다시 시작이다" (일어남); 再来一次 = "한 번 더 해라" (미래). 미래의 再는 了를 쓰지 않으며, 과거의 又는 了가 필요합니다.

    Watch out

    • 又은 부정문에도 사용됩니다: 他又没来 ("그가ared come again didn't").
    • 곧重复될 것이라면 要와 함께 쓰세요: 又要…了 ("이제ared comes again").
    2.2

    一直 — "오래전부터, continuously"

    English

一直 is literally "one straight (line)" — picture a single, unbroken line drawn through time. It describes an action or state that runs non-stop over a stretch — "continuously, the whole time, all along." English often lands it as "always."

Structure: Subject + 一直 + Predicate Literally: "in one straight line, [predicate]."

    I我wǒall along一直yì zhívery很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanyou你nǐ。

    I've liked you all along.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnalways一直yì zhívery很hěnbusy忙máng。

    The boss is always busy.

eighteen十八岁shí bā suìafter以后yǐ hòuhe,他tāhas … ever since一直yì zhíalone一个人yí ge rénlived住zhù。

Since he was eighteen, he's lived alone the whole time.

Remember: 一直 = one straight line through time — no breaks. It's unbroken duration; for a repeating habit ("always does X"), switch to 总是.

    Watch out

    • It often pairs with 在 (一直在学习) or 都 (一直都不抽烟).
    • 一直走 also means "go straight ahead" — the same "straight line" idea, in space.
    한국어

一直은 문자 그대로 "한 직선" — 시간 속을 끊김 없이 그은 single, unbroken line을 상상해 보십시오.它会描述一个动作或状态,run non-stop over a stretch — "continuously, the whole time, all along." 영어에서는 주로 "always"로 번역됩니다.

Structure: Subject + 一直 + Predicate *문자 그대로: "한 직선으로, [서술어]."

    I我wǒall along一直yì zhívery很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanyou你nǐ。

    나는 너를 오래전부터 좋아했다.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnalways一直yì zhívery很hěnbusy忙máng。

    사장님은 항상 바쁘시다.

eighteen十八岁shí bā suìafter以后yǐ hòuhe,他tāhas … ever since一直yì zhíalone一个人yí ge rénlived住zhù。

    그가 18살 때부터 혼자 산 지 오래다.

기억하세요: 一直 = 시간 속의 한 직선 —中断没有.它是unbroken duration; for a repeating habit ("always does X"), switch to 总是.

    Watch out

    • 在 (一直在学习) 또는 都 (一直都不抽烟)와 자주 짝을 이룹니다.
    • 一直走는 "직진하다"라는 뜻도 가집니다 — 공간에서의 same "straight line" 개념입니다.
    2.3

    总是 — "항상" (habit)

    English

总是 is "always" in the sense of a habit or consistent pattern — something that just keeps recurring. 总 means "all in all, in every case," so 总是 says "in every case, it's like this." It's neutral in tone and sits before the verb.

    Structure: Subject + 总是 + Verb · with an adjective: 总是 + 很 / 特别 + Adj

    he他tāalways总是zǒng shìlate迟到chí dào。

    He's always late.

    your你nǐhome家jiāalways总是zǒng shìvery很hěnclean干净gān jìng。

Your home is always so clean.

Remember: 总 = "in every case." 总是 is the neutral "always" (a pattern); its grumbling twin 老是 (below) adds the eye-roll.

    Watch out

    • Before an adjective you must add a degree word: 总是很累 ✓, not 总是累.
    • 总是 = a recurring habit; 一直 = one unbroken stretch. "He's always late" (each time) is 总是; "it rained the whole time" is 一直.
    한국어

总是는 habit나 consistent pattern으로서의 "항상"입니다 — repeatedly recurring하는 것을 의미합니다. 总은 "전반적으로, 모든 경우"를 뜻하므로, 总是는 *"모든 경우에서 이렇다"*고 말합니다. 어조는 neutral이며, 동사 앞에 위치합니다.

    구조: Subject + 总是 + Verb · 형용사와 함께: 总是 + 很 / 特别 + Adj

    he他tāalways总是zǒng shìlate迟到chí dào。

    그는 항상 늦는다.

    your你nǐhome家jiāalways总是zǒng shìvery很hěnclean干净gān jìng。

    네 집은 항상 정말 깨끗하다.

기억하세요: 总 = "모든 경우에서". 总是는 neutral "항상" (pattern)입니다. its grumbling twin 老是 (아래)는 eye-roll를 더합니다.

    Watch out

    • 형용사 앞에는 degree word를 반드시 추가해야 합니다: 总是很累 ✓, not 总是累.
    • 总是 = recurring habit; 一直 = one unbroken stretch. "He's always late" (매번)은 总是; "it rained the whole time"은 一直.
    2.4

    终于 — "마침내, 드디어"

    English

终于 marks something finally happening after a long wait — and it glows with relief or joy. 终 is "the end / finish line" (the 终 of 终点), so 终于 is "at the finish line, it came." Unlike English "finally," it can't stand alone, move to the front, or end a sentence — and it must team up with 了.

    Structure: Subject + 终于 + Predicate + 了

    you你nǐfinally终于zhōng yúarrived到dào了le!

    You're finally here!

    the homework作业zuò yèfinally终于zhōng yúdone做zuòfinished完wán了le!

    I've finally finished the homework!

Remember: 终 = the finish line you've been straining toward — 终于 is the sigh of relief as you cross it, always sealed with 了.

    Watch out

    • The 了 is obligatory — 终于…了; never 终于 bare like English "finally" on its own.
    • It implies a welcome outcome. For a flat, neutral "in the end," use 最后.
    한국어

终于는 긴 기다림 끝에 무언가가 마침내 일어나는 것을 표시하며, 안도감이나 기쁨이 빛납니다. 终은 "끝 / 피니시 라인" (终点中的终)이므로, 终于는 *"피니시 라인에서 왔다"*는 뜻입니다. 영어의 "finally"와 달리,单独 standing不能用于句首或句尾 — 了와 반드시 짝을 이뤄야 합니다.

    Structure: Subject + 终于 + Predicate + 了

    you你nǐfinally终于zhōng yúarrived到dào了le!

    드디어 왔구나!

    the homework作业zuò yèfinally终于zhōng yúdone做zuòfinished完wán了le!

    드디어 숙제를 다 했어!

기억하세요: 终 = straining toward한 finish line — 终于는 it crossing时 sigh of relief, always sealed with 了.

    Watch out

    • 了是mandatory — 终于…了; never 终于 bare like English "finally" on its own.
    • It implies a welcome outcome. For a flat, neutral "in the end," use 最后.
    2.5

    几乎 — "거의, 거의"

    English

几乎 means "nearly, almost" — it gets you right up to the line without quite crossing it. It loves company: it very often teams up with an "all" word (每, 所有, 全 … 都) or a "none" word (没有, 不).

    Structure: 几乎 + 每 / 所有 … 都 … · Subject + 几乎 + [不 / 没] + Predicate

almost几乎jī hūeveryone每个人měi ge rénall都dōuhas有yǒua phone手机shǒu jī。

    Almost everyone has a phone.

    almost几乎jī hūno没有méi yǒuone人rénbelieves相信xiāng xìnhim他tā。

    Almost no one believes him.

    my我wǒboss老板lǎo bǎnhardly几乎jī hūever不bùdrinks喝酒hē jiǔ。

    My boss hardly ever drinks.

Remember: think of 几乎 as a needle stopping just short of the mark. 几乎 + 都 → "almost all"; 几乎 + 没有 → "almost none"; 几乎不 / 几乎没 → "hardly ever."

    Watch out

    • It points to one extreme (all or none) — pair it with a 都 / 没有 / 不 to land the meaning.
    한국어

几乎는 "거의, almost"를 뜻합니다 — mark에 exactly reaching but not quite crossing it. It loves company: it very often teams up with an "all" word (每, 所有, 全 … 都) or a "none" word (没有, 不).

    구조: 几乎 + 每 / 所有 … 都 … · Subject + 几乎 + [不 / 没] + Predicate

almost几乎jī hūeveryone每个人měi ge rénall都dōuhas有yǒua phone手机shǒu jī。

    거의everyone have a phone.

    거의no one believes him.

    my我wǒboss老板lǎo bǎnhardly几乎jī hūever不bùdrinks喝酒hē jiǔ。

    내 사장님drinks hardly ever.

기억하세요: 几乎를 needle that stops just short of the mark로 생각하세요. 几乎 + 都 → "almost all"; 几乎 + 没有 → "almost none"; 几乎不 / 几乎没 → "hardly ever."

    Watch out

    • It points to one extreme (all or none) — pair it with a 都 / 没有 / 不 to land the meaning.
    2.6

    只 — "오직"

    English

只 (zhǐ) is the everyday word for "only." It's an adverb, so it clings to the verb (or an auxiliary like 会 / 能) — never to the noun the way English "only" floats around.

    Structure: 只 + Verb · 只 + 会 / 能 + Verb

    I我wǒonly只zhǐhave有yǒuone一个yí geolder brother哥哥gē ge。

I only have one older brother.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐwant想xiǎngto be with跟gēnyou你nǐtogether在一起zài yì qǐ。

I only want to be with you.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐcan能néngsay说shuōtwo两liǎngsentences句jùChinese中文Zhōng wén。

I can only say a couple of sentences in Chinese.

Remember: 只 sits on the verb: 我只有一个 ("I only have one"), never 我有只一个. English "only" wanders; Chinese 只 stays glued to the verb.

    Watch out

    • 只 (zhǐ, "only") is written the same as 只 (zhī), the measure word for animals (一只猫) — same character, two readings and jobs.
    한국어

只 (zhǐ)는 "only"에 해당하는 일상적인 단어입니다. 부사이므로 동사(또는 会 / 能과 같은 보조어)에 붙어 - noun(명사)에는 붙지 않습니다. 이는 영어의 "only"가 명사 주변을 떠다닐 수 있는 것과 다릅니다.

    구조: 只 + Verb · 只 + 会 / 能 + Verb

    I我wǒonly只zhǐhave有yǒuone一个yí geolder brother哥哥gē ge。

I only have one older brother.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐwant想xiǎngto be with跟gēnyou你nǐtogether在一起zài yì qǐ。

I only want to be with you.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐcan能néngsay说shuōtwo两liǎngsentences句jùChinese中文Zhōng wén。

I can only say a couple of sentences in Chinese.

Remember: 只는 동사 위에 위치합니다: 我只有一个 ("I only have one")은 맞지만, 我有只一个은 틀립니다. 영어의 "only"는 이리저리 이동하지만, 중국어의 只는 동사에 단단히 고정됩니다.

    Watch out

    • 只 (zhǐ, "only")는 只 (zhī), 즉 동물 개수법인 '한 마리의'와 동일한 글자로 쓰입니다 — 같은 문자지만 두 가지 발음과 역할이 있습니다.
    2.7

    Duration + 没 + 动词 + 了 — 무언가를 하지 않은 기간

    English

Here's a word order that trips up English speakers. To say how long you have NOT done something, the duration jumps in front of the verb: time + 没 + verb + 了. Compare the normal "did it for ten years" (verb first), and you'll see the mirror image.

    Structure: Subject + (已经 +) Duration + 没 + Verb + 了

    we我们wǒ menalready已经yǐ jīngten years十年shí niánhaven't没méimet见jiàn了le。

We haven't seen each other for ten years now.

he他tāa week一个星期yí ge xīng qīhasn't没méishowered洗澡xǐ zǎo了le。

He hasn't showered in a week.

    you你nǐhow long多久duō jiǔhaven't没méibeen home回家huí jiā了le?

How long has it been since you went home?

Remember: "have done" puts time after the verb; "haven't done" puts time before it. 看了十年 = "watched for ten years"; 十年没看了 = "haven't watched in ten years." The 了 here means "and counting."

    Watch out

    • Chinese avoids "since [a time point]." Say a duration instead (三年没…了), or 上次…是… ("the last time was…").
    한국어

여기에는 영어 화자를 혼란스럽게 만드는 어순이 있습니다. 무언가를 하지 않은 기간을 표현하려면, 기간이 동사 앞에 배치됩니다: time + 没 + verb + 了. 정상적인 "10년 동안 했다"(동사 먼저)와 비교해 보세요. 거울 속 이미지의 역배치임을 알 수 있습니다.

    Structure: Subject + (已经 +) Duration + 没 + Verb + 了

    we我们wǒ menalready已经yǐ jīngten years十年shí niánhaven't没méimet见jiàn了le。

We haven't seen each other for ten years now.

he他tāa week一个星期yí ge xīng qīhasn't没méishowered洗澡xǐ zǎo了le。

He hasn't showered in a week.

    you你nǐhow long多久duō jiǔhaven't没méibeen home回家huí jiā了le?

How long has it been since you went home?

Remember: "have done"는 시간을 동사 뒤에 배치하고; "haven't done"는 시간을 동사 앞에 배치합니다. 看了十年 = "watched for ten years"; 十年没看了 = "haven't watched in ten years." 여기서 了는 "아직도 계속되고 있다"를 의미합니다.

    Watch out

    • 중국어는 "since [시간점]"이라는 표현을 피합니다. 대신 기간을 사용하세요 (三年没…了), 또는 上次…是… ("마지막으로…이었을 때는…").
    2.8

    Time + 才 + 动词 — "not until" (지체됨)

    English

才 (cái) drags an action later than expected — "not until, as late as." If 就 says "already, sooner than you'd think," 才 is its grumpy opposite: "only then, finally, took its time."

    Structure: Subject + Time + 才 + Verb

I我wǒyesterday昨天zuó tiāneleven o'clock十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáigot home到家dào jiā。

I didn't get home until eleven last night.

he他tātwenty-five二十五岁èr shí wǔ suìnot until才cáistarted上shànguniversity大学dà xué。

He didn't start university until he was twenty-five.

Remember: 才 = late / barely (就 = early / already). And 才 takes no 了 — the lateness is the point, not a completed result: 四十岁才结婚 ✓, never 才结婚了.

    Watch out

    • Same character does double duty: before a time it means "late" (this point); before a number it means "only a little" (point 2.12 below).
    한국어

才 (cái)는 기대보다 늦게 행동을拖延시킵니다 — "until finally, as late as." 就가 "already, 예상보다 빨리"라면, 才是 그 반대의 불만스러운 말투: "just then, finally, slow down."

    Structure: Subject + Time + 才 + Verb

I我wǒyesterday昨天zuó tiāneleven o'clock十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáigot home到家dào jiā。

I didn't get home until eleven last night.

he他tātwenty-five二十五岁èr shí wǔ suìnot until才cáistarted上shànguniversity大学dà xué。

He didn't start university until he was twenty-five.

Remember: 才 = late / barely (就 = early / already). 그리고 才는 了를 취하지 않습니다 — 지체됨 자체가 핵심이며, 완성된 결과물이 아닙니다: 四十岁才结婚 ✓, 절대 才结婚了는 안 됩니다.

    Watch out

    • 같은 글자가 두 가지 역할을 합니다: 시간 앞에서는 "晚了"(this point), 숫자 앞에서는 "only a little"(아래 2.12 참조).

    先 … ,再 … — "first …, then …"

    English

To line events up in order, frame them with 先 … 再 … — "first …, (and) then …." The trap: here 再 means "then / next," not its usual "again."

    Structure: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃chī。

Wash your hands first, then eat.

    you你nǐshould要yàofirst先xiāndo做zuòhomework作业zuò yèthen,再zàiwatch看kànTV电视diàn shì。

Do your homework first, then watch TV.

Remember: in 先…再…, 再 is the "and then" of a sequence, not "again." Picture two stepping stones: step on 先 first, then 再.

    Watch out

    • 先…再说 means "do X first, then we'll see" — a "deal with it later" feeling: 先吃饭再说.
    • Chain longer sequences with 然后 ("and then") and 接着 ("next").
    한국어

    이벤트를 순서대로 나열하려면 **先 … 再 …**로 감싸세요 — "first …, (and) then …." 함정: 여기서 再는通常の "again"이 아니라 **"then / next"**를 의미합니다.

    Structure: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃chī。

Wash your hands first, then eat.

    you你nǐshould要yàofirst先xiāndo做zuòhomework作业zuò yèthen,再zàiwatch看kànTV电视diàn shì。

Do your homework first, then watch TV.

Remember: 先…再…에서 再는 Sequence의 **"and then"**이며 "again"이 아닙니다. 두 개의 돌다리 위를 걷는 상상을 해보세요: 먼저 先를 밟고, 다음에 再를 밟습니다.

    Watch out

    • 先…再说는 "X를 먼저 하고, 그때 보자"는 뜻입니다 — "나중에 처리하자"는 느낌: 先吃饭再说.
    • 더 긴 순서를 이어붙일 때는 然后("and then")와 接着("next")를 사용하세요.

    一边 … 一边 … — 두 가지 일을 동시에 함

    English

Two deliberate actions happening at the same time? Frame both with 一边 … 一边 … — "(do X) while (doing Y)." 边 means "side," so it's literally "on one side … on the other side …" — two tracks running together.

    Structure: Subject + 一边 + Verb 1 (,) 一边 + Verb 2

I我wǒoften常常cháng chángwhile一边yì biānshowering洗澡xǐ zǎo,一边yì biānsing唱歌chàng gē。

I often sing in the shower.

    Don't make calls while driving.

Remember: 边 = "side" — one action on each side, at once. Casually it shrinks to 边…边… (边走边聊, "chatting as we walk").

    Watch out

    • Both actions must be intentional; for "while X was going on," use …的时候.
    • The main action is usually the second one in Chinese (English often flips the order).
    한국어

두 의도적인 행동이 동시에 일어나는가? **一边 … 一边 …**으로 감싸세요 — "(do X) while (doing Y)." 边은 "side"이므로, Literal로는 "한 쪽에서 … 다른 쪽에서 …" — 두 레일이 함께 달리는 것입니다.

    Structure: Subject + 一边 + Verb 1 (,) 一边 + Verb 2

Remember: 边 = "side" — 한쪽엔 하나의 행동, 다른 쪽엔 하나의 행동, 동시에. 구어에서는 边…边…로 줄어듭니다 (边走边聊, "边走며 대화하다").

    Watch out

    • 두 행동 모두 의도적이어야 합니다. "while X was going on"일 때는 …的时候를 사용하세요.
    • 주요 행동은 보통 중국어에서 두 번째에 옵니다 (영어는 종종 순서를 바니다).

    老是 — "always" (불만 표출)

    English

老是 (or just 老) also means "always" — but it's the grumbling version, loaded with frustration, like "you're always on your phone." Swap it in for 总是 anywhere you want to add an eye-roll.

    Structure: Subject + 老(是) + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy怎么zěn mealways老是lǎo shìlate迟到chí dào?

    Why are you always late?

    this这个zhè gemachine机器jī qìalways老是lǎo shìhaving出chūtrouble问题wèn tí。

This machine is always breaking down.

Remember: 总是 is neutral; 老是 complains. If you could add "ugh" to the English, use 老是.

    Watch out

    • It's a complaint — don't use it for something good (use 总是 there).
    • Before an adjective, add 不 / 很 / 这么: 老是不高兴.
    한국어

老是(또는 단순히 老) 또한 "always"를 의미하지만, 이는 불만을 담고 있는 버전입니다. frustration이 가득 차 있으며, "you're always on your phone"와 같습니다. 눈치를 볼 때 总是 대신 老是를 사용할 수 있습니다.

Remember: 总是는 중립적입니다. 老是는 불만을 표현합니다. 영어에 "ugh"를 덧붙일 수 있다면 老是를 사용하세요.

    Watch out

    • 이것은 불만입니다 — 좋은 일에는 사용하지 마세요 (그럴 땐 总是를 사용하세요).
    • 형용사 앞에는 不 / 很 /这么를 더합니다: 老是不高兴.

    才 + 数字 — "only" (작은 숫자)

    English

A second job for 才 (cái): drop it before a number and it stresses the amount is smaller than you'd expect — "only, just, a mere." Where the "lateness" 才 says "late," this one says "barely that much."

    Structure: 才 + Number + Measure Word + Noun · 才 + Verb + Number + MW + Noun

    you你nǐonly才cáitwenty二十岁èr shí suì?

    You're only twenty?

They've only known each other three months!

Remember: one 才, two jobs — before a time it drags things late (2.8); before a number it shrinks the amount to only that much. Both share the feeling "less than expected."

    Watch out

    • After 才 + verb, the 了 is optional: 才来了两个月 ≈ 才来两个月.
    한국어

才 (cái)의 두 번째 역할: 숫자 앞에 두면 양이 예상보다 작음을 강조합니다 — "only, just, a mere." "晚了"를 말하는 才가 "晚了"라면, 이 才는 "just that much"라고 말합니다.

    구조: 才 + Number + Measure Word + Noun · 才 + Verb + Number + MW + Noun

    you你nǐonly才cáitwenty二十岁èr shí suì?

Remember: 하나의 才, 두 가지 역할 — 시간 앞에서는 것을 晚了(2.8); 숫자 앞에서는 양을 just that much로 줄입니다. 둘 다 "expected less than"라는 느낌을 공유합니다.

    这么 / 那么 + 形容词 — "so …, this / that …"

    English

Put 这么 or 那么 in front of an adjective to dial its degree up — English "so, this much, that much." The split mirrors English this vs that: 这么 points to something near or happening right now ("this cold"); 那么 points to something further off or already mentioned ("that clever").

Structure: Subject + 这么 / 那么 + Adjective

    today今天jīn tiānhow come怎么zěn meso这么zhè mecold冷lěng?

Why is it so cold today?

you你nǐso那么nà meclever聪明cōng mingsurely,一定yí dìngcan能néngguess it猜到cāi dào。

You're so clever — you'll definitely guess it.

Remember: 这 = here / now, 那 = there / then; the 么 turns "this/that" into "this much / that much." Same split as English this/that.

    Watch out

    • Both translate as "so," but keep the near/far feel: 这么 for what's in front of you, 那么 for what's removed.
    • Very common after 怎么 for a surprised "how come it's so …?": 怎么这么贵.
    한국어

这么 또는 那么를 형용사 앞에 두어 그 정도를 높이는 데 사용합니다 — 영어의 "so, this much, that much." 이 구분은 영어의 this vs that과 mirrored됩니다: 这么는 가까운 것 또는 지금 happening하는 것을 가리킵니다 ("this cold"); 那么는 더 먼 것 또는 이미 언급된 것을 가리킵니다 ("that clever").

Structure: Subject + 这么 / 那么 + Adjective

    today今天jīn tiānhow come怎么zěn meso这么zhè mecold冷lěng?

Why is it so cold today?

you你nǐso那么nà meclever聪明cōng mingsurely,一定yí dìngcan能néngguess it猜到cāi dào。

You're so clever — you'll definitely guess it.

    Remember: 这 = here / now, 那 = there / then; 么는 "this/that"를 "this much / that much"로 변환합니다. 영어의 this/that과 동일한 구분입니다.

    Watch out

    • 둘 다 "so"로 번역되지만, near/far의 느낌을 유지하세요: 这么는面前 있는 것에, 那么는 away 있는 것에 사용합니다.
    • 怎么后面 매우 흔하게 사용하여 놀란 "how come it's so …?": 怎么这么贵.
    3.2

    A + 跟 / 和 + B + 一样 — "the same as, as … as"

    English

To say two things are alike, link them with 跟 (or 和) and 一样 — literally "one same (shape)." Add an adjective on the end and you get "equally …, as … as."

    Structure: Noun 1 + 跟 / 和 + Noun 2 + 一样 (+ Adjective)

your home你家nǐ jiāas跟gēnmy home我家wǒ jiāthe same一样yí yàngbig大dà。

Your place is just as big as mine.

Beijing北京Běi jīng的deweather天气tiān qìand和héShanghai上海Shàng hǎinot不bùthe same一样yí yàng。

    Beijing's weather isn't the same as Shanghai's.

Remember: 一样 = "one-same" — cut from the same cloth. The adjective rides after 一样 (一样大 = "equally big"), and 不 to negate goes before it (不一样).

    Watch out

    • Word order traps English speakers: it's …一样大, never 大一样.
    • 跟 and 和 are interchangeable here; 跟 is more spoken, 和 a touch more neutral.
    한국어

    두 것이 ** alike**임을 나타낼 때는 跟(또는 和)과 一样을 연결합니다 — 직역하면 "하나 같은(모양)"입니다. 끝 на adjective를 더하면 "동일하게 …, …처럼 …"이 됩니다.

    Structure: Noun 1 + 跟 / 和 + Noun 2 + 一样 (+ Adjective)

your home你家nǐ jiāas跟gēnmy home我家wǒ jiāthe same一样yí yàngbig大dà。

내 집은 당신의 집과 정확히 같습니다.

Beijing北京Běi jīng的deweather天气tiān qìand和héShanghai上海Shàng hǎinot不bùthe same一样yí yàng。

    베이징의 날씨는 상하이의 것과 같습니다.

    기억하세요: 一样 = **

    Watch out

    • 어순 함정: 영어 화자를 위한 것입니다. …一样大, 절대 大一样이 아닙니다.
    • 跟과 和는 여기서 서로 교체 가능합니다; 跟은 구어체이며, 和는 다소 중립적입니다.

    又 … 又 … — "…도 있고 …도 있다"

    English

The frame 又 … 又 … stacks two qualities that hold at the same time — "both … and …." The one rule: the two adjectives must share the same feeling — both positive, or both negative. Mixing a plus and a minus jars the Chinese ear.

    Structure: Subject + 又 + Adjective 1 + 又 + Adjective 2

    this这个zhè gehouse房子fáng ziboth又yòubig大dàand又yòubright亮liàng。

This house is both big and bright.

    here这里zhè lǐ的decoffee咖啡kā fēiboth又yòuexpensive贵guìand又yòubad-tasting难喝nán hē。

The coffee here is both pricey and nasty.

Remember: both 又's must point the same way — 又便宜又好 (both plus ✓), 又贵又难喝 (both minus ✓), but not 又贵又好 (mixed ✗).

    Watch out

    • For two simultaneous actions rather than qualities, use 一边…一边… instead.
    한국어

프레임 又 … 又 … 은 두 가지 특성이 동시에 성립함을 쌓아 올립니다 — "…도 있고 …도 있다." 유일한 규칙: 두 adjective가 같은 느낌을 공유해야 합니다 — 모두 긍정이거나 모두 부정이어야 합니다. 플러스와 마이너스를 섞으면 중국어 귀에 거슬립니다.

    Structure: Subject + 又 + Adjective 1 + 又 + Adjective 2

    this这个zhè gehouse房子fáng ziboth又yòubig大dàand又yòubright亮liàng。

    이 집은 크고 밝습니다.

기억하세요: 두 又가 모두 같은 방향을 향해야 합니다 — 又便宜又好 (모두 플러스 ✓), 又贵又难喝 (모두 마이너스 ✓), 하지만 又贵又好 (혼합 ✗).

    Watch out

    • 두 가지 동시 행동이 아닌 특성인 경우, 一边…一边…을 사용하십시오.

    比较 +形容词 — "상당히, 꽤, 상대적으로"

    English

比较 literally means "to compare," and as an adverb it means "fairly, rather, comparatively." It's a gentle hedge — softer and less absolute than 很 or 非常 — and it quietly implies "more so than the rest," even when nothing else is named.

Structure: Subject + 比较 + Adjective (also 比较 + feeling-verb)

    this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tífairly比较bǐ jiàosimple简单jiǎn dān。

    This question is fairly simple.

    I我wǒrather比较bǐ jiàoprefer喜欢xǐ huantaking坐zuòthe subway地铁dì tiě。

I rather prefer taking the subway.

Remember: 比较 has "compare" (比) baked in — it always whispers "relatively, compared to the alternatives." Use it to sound measured, not gushing.

    Watch out

    • Works with feeling-verbs too: 比较喜欢, 比较讨厌.
    한국어

比较는 직역하면 "비교하다"이며, 부사로 쓰이면 "상당히, 꽤, 비교적으로"를 의미합니다. 이는 부드러운 방언 — 很 또는 非常보다 부드럽고 절대적이지 않으며, 다른 것이 명시되지 않더라도 조용히 "나머지보다 더 그렇다"는 것을 암시합니다.

Structure: Subject + 比较 + Adjective (also 比较 + feeling-verb)

    this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tífairly比较bǐ jiàosimple简单jiǎn dān。

기억하세요: 比较에는 "비교" (比)가 내장되어 있습니다 — 항상 속삭입니다 "상대적으로, 대안과 비교했을 때." 과감하지 않고 단정적인 느낌을 주려면 이 단어를 사용하십시오.

    Watch out

    多 +形容词 — "…이라다!" (감탄사)

    English

In an exclamation, 多 (or 多么) before an adjective means "how …!, so …!" — a quick, emotional burst of admiration or complaint. It usually closes with 啊.

    Structure: Subject + 多 + Adjective + 啊!

    How clever your daughter is!

    on your own一个人yí ge rénhow多duōnice好hǎo!

Remember: the same 多 that asks about degree — 你多大?("how old?") — also exclaims it: 多大啊!("how big!"). The 啊 and the "!" are the tell.

    Watch out

    • It's an exclamation — pair it with 啊 and a "!".
    한국어

감탄사에서 多(또는 多么)가 adjective 앞에 오면 "…이라다!, …만큼이다!" — 감탄이나 불만을 표현하는 빠르고 감정적인 폭발입니다. 보통 啊로 끝납니다.

    Structure: Subject + 多 + Adjective + 啊!

    形容词 +的 +名词 — 명사를 묘사하기 위해

    English

To stick an adjective in front of a noun, glue them together with 的 — Chinese's all-purpose "of / 's" link. English just lines the words up ("a beautiful girl"); Chinese threads 的 between them.

    Structure: Adjective + 的 + Noun

    beautiful漂亮piào liang的degirl女孩儿nǚ háir

    a beautiful girl

    you你nǐwant要yàocold冷lěng的deor还是hái shìhot热rè的de?

Do you want a cold one or a hot one?

Remember: 的 clips an adjective onto a noun. A two-syllable adjective almost always needs it (漂亮的女孩); a tight one-syllable pairing can drop it (好朋友, "good friend").

    Watch out

    • Adj + 的 can stand alone for "the … one(s)": 我要甜的 ("I'll have the sweet one").
    한국어

adjective를 명사 앞에 붙이려면 的으로它們结合起来 — 중국어의 만능 "of / 's" 연결자입니다. 영어는 단순히 단어를 나열할 뿐입니다 ("a beautiful girl"); 중국어는 그 사이에 的을 끼워 넣습니다.

    Structure: Adjective + 的 + Noun

    you你nǐwant要yàocold冷lěng的deor还是hái shìhot热rè的de?

기억하세요: 的는 adjective를 명사에 고정시킵니다. 이음절 adjective는 거의 항상 이를 필요로 합니다 (漂亮的女孩); 조밀한 일음절 조합은 생략할 수 있습니다 (好朋友, "좋은 친구").

    或者 — "or" (문장에서)

    English

Use 或者 to lay out alternatives in a statement — "either … or." It tells, it doesn't ask: "coffee or tea, both fine." The moment you want the listener to choose, you must switch to 还是 (the last point in this topic) — this is the single most-tested "or" trap in Chinese.

    Structure: Possibility 1 + 或者 + Possibility 2

    I我wǒdrink喝hēcoffee咖啡kā fēior或者huò zhětea茶cháeither,都dōuis fine行xíng。

Coffee or tea — either's fine for me.

    Saturday or Sunday both work.

Remember: 或者 = "or" when you tell; 还是 = "or" when you ask. A statement ("either is fine") takes 或者; a question ("which one?") takes 还是.

    Watch out

    • It often closes with 都行 / 都可以 ("either one is fine").
    한국어

或者를 사용하여 문장에서 대안을 제시할 때 — "either … or." 말하고 묻지는 않습니다: "커피든 차든 다 좋습니다." 듣는 사람이 선택하기를 원하는 순간, 还是(이 주제 마지막 항목)로 전환해야 합니다 — 이것이 중국어에서 가장 많이 출제되는 "or" 함정입니다.

    Structure: Possibility 1 + 或者 + Possibility 2

    I我wǒdrink喝hēcoffee咖啡kā fēior或者huò zhětea茶cháeither,都dōuis fine行xíng。

    那 /那么 — "then, in that case"

    English

那 (or the fuller 那么) picks up what was just said and draws a suggestion or conclusion from it — "then, so, in that case." It opens your reply, reacting to the other person's remark. (It's the same 那 as "that" — literally "that being so, …".)

    Structure: Situation ,那(么) + Suggestion / Decision

Remember: 那(么) = "that being so…" — it reacts and suggests in conversation. It is not 所以 ("therefore"), which states a cause→effect inside one thought.

    Watch out

    • A bare 那 is the most natural in speech; 那么 sounds a touch more formal.
    한국어

那(또는 전체형인 那么)는 방금 한 말을 이어받아 제언이나 결론을 도출합니다 — "then, so, in that case." 답변을 시작하여 상대방의 발언에 반응합니다. ("that"이라는 동일한 那입니다 — 직역하면 "*that being so, …".)

    Structure: Situation ,那(么) + Suggestion / Decision

    跟 … (一起) +动词 — "with (someone)"

    English

Before the verb, 跟 marks the person you do something with — "(together) with." It frequently teams up with 一起 ("together"). 跟 also means "to follow / heel," which is why it leans toward doing things alongside someone.

    Structure: Subject + 跟 + Person + (一起) + Verb

    you你nǐwant to要yàowith跟gēnme我wǒtogether一起yì qǐgo去qù吗ma?

Do you want to come with me?

    Read after me.

Remember: 跟 literally "to follow" — so 跟我读 is "read after me." The "with" phrase always sits before the verb: 跟你见面 ✓, never 见面你.

    Watch out

    • 跟 ≈ 和 for plain "with," but only 跟 carries the "follow" sense (跟我来, "come with / after me").
    한국어

동사 앞에 跟은 무언가를 하는 사람 with를 표시합니다 — "(together) with." 종종 一起("together")와 함께 사용됩니다. 跟은 "follow / heel"이라는 뜻이기도 하므로, 누군가와 함께 하는 것에 경향성을 가집니다.

    you你nǐwant to要yàowith跟gēnme我wǒtogether一起yì qǐgo去qù吗ma?

    나와 같이 오시겠습니까?

    after跟gēnme我wǒread读dú。

    내 뒤를 따라 읽으세요.

기억하세요: 跟은 직역하면 "follow" — 따라서 跟我读는 "read after me"입니다. "with" 구文总是 sits before the verb: 跟你见面 ✓, never 见面你.

    Watch out

    • 跟 ≈ 和 for plain "with", but only 跟 carries the "follow" sense (跟我来, "come with / after me").

    A +还是+ B? — "or" (in questions)

    English

When you ask someone to choose between options, use 还是 — never 或者. 还是 turns the sentence into an either/or question, and the asker is waiting for you to pick one.

    Structure: (Subject + Verb +) A + 还是 + B + ?

    you你nǐwant要yàodrink喝hētea茶cháor还是hái shìcoffee咖啡kā fēi?

Do you want tea or coffee?

he他tāis是shìAmerican美国人Měi guó rénor还是hái shìBritish英国人Yīng guó rén?

Time / 동사 + 이전 — "before (특정 시점)"

    English

Place 以前 (yǐqián) after a time or an action to mean "before" it. The trap for English speakers is the order: the reference point comes first, then 以前 — the exact reverse of "before eating," which Chinese says as "eating-before."

Structure: Time / Verb Phrase + 以前 ,……

    eating吃饭chī fànbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐwash hands洗手xǐ shǒu了le吗ma?

Did you wash your hands before eating?

Friday星期五xīng qī wǔbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐneed to要yàofinish做完zuò wánthis这些zhè xiēwork工作gōng zuò。

You need to finish this work before Friday.

Remember: Chinese stamps the time-word after the event: 吃饭以前 = "eating-before." Flip the English order and tack 以前 on the end.

    Watch out

    • "Verb + 以前" means "before [doing] the action" (做作业以前 = "before doing homework").
    한국어

以前 (yǐqián)는 시간이나 행동 뒤에 붙어 "~하기 전"을 의미합니다. 영어 화자가 주의해야 할 함정은 **语序(어순)**입니다: 기준점이 먼저 오고 그 뒤에 以前이 붙습니다 — 이는 "먹기 전(eating-before)"이라고 하는 중국어와 정확히 반대되는 어순입니다.

Structure: Time / Verb Phrase + 以前 ,……

    eating吃饭chī fànbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐwash hands洗手xǐ shǒu了le吗ma?

    먹기 전에 손을 씻었어요?

Friday星期五xīng qī wǔbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐneed to要yàofinish做完zuò wánthis这些zhè xiēwork工作gōng zuò。

금요일 전에 이 일을 끝내야 해요.

주의: 중국어는 시간 어휘를 행동 뒤에 붙입니다: 吃饭以前 = "먹기 전." 영어의 어순을 뒤집고 以前을 문장末尾(마지막)에 붙이세요.

    Watch out

    • "동사 + 以前"은 "[동작을] 하기 전"을 뜻합니다 (做作业以前 = "숙제를 하기 전").
    5.2

    以前,…… — "과거, ~하기 전" (일반적)

    English

Drop 以前 at the front of a sentence and it means "in the past, back then" — a general earlier time, no specific event attached. It can also slip in right after the subject.

    Structure: 以前 + Subject + Verb · Subject + 以前 + Verb

in the past以前yǐ qiánI,我wǒcouldn't不会bú huìspeak说shuōChinese中文Zhōng wén。

    I couldn't speak Chinese before.

    he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shī。

He used to be a chef.

Remember: one 以前, two spots — after an event it's "before X" (吃饭以前); at the front it's "in the past, used to." It usually contrasts the past with now (often with a 了 marking the change).

    Watch out

    • Front position or after-the-subject — both are correct.
    한국어

**文首(문두)**에 있는 以前를 빼면 "과거, 그때"라는 뜻이 됩니다 — 특정 행동을 포함하지 않은 일반적인 과거 시간을 나타냅니다. 또한 주어 바로 뒤에 들어올 수도 있습니다.

    구조: 以前 + Subject + Verb · Subject + 以前 + Verb

in the past以前yǐ qiánI,我wǒcouldn't不会bú huìspeak说shuōChinese中文Zhōng wén。

    과거에는 중국어를 할 수 없었어요.

    he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shī。

    그는 예전에 요리사였어요.

주의: 以前 하나만 있으면 두 가지 위치가 가능합니다: 행동 뒤에서는 "~하기 전" (吃饭以前), 문두에서는 "과거, 예전에"를 뜻합니다. 보통 과거와 현재를 대조하며, 변화가 있음을 나타내는 了가 자주 함께 쓰입니다.

    Watch out

    • 문두 위치 또는 주어 뒤 위치 — 둘 다 문법적으로 맞습니다.
    5.3

    刚才 — "방금, 한참 전"

    English

刚才 (gāngcái) is a time word for the very recent past — "just now, a moment ago." Don't confuse it with the adverb 刚: 刚才 is a noun (a moment that just passed) and can stand alone, while 刚 ("just") clings to the verb.

Structure: (Subject +) 刚才 + Verb

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    What did you just say?

    just now刚才gāng cáiwho谁shéicame来lái了le?

    Who came just now?

Remember: 刚才 = a noun (a moment in the past, can sit anywhere); 刚 = an adverb (glued to the verb). 我刚到 ("I just arrived") vs 刚才谁来了?("who came a moment ago?").

    Watch out

    • 刚才 can take a 了 / 的 on the verb (刚才到的); 刚 + verb usually doesn't.
    한국어

刚才 (gāngcái)는 매우 최근의 과거를 나타내는 시간 부사명사로, "방금, 한참 전"이라는 뜻입니다. 부사 刚과 혼동하지 마십시오: 刚才는 명사 (지나간 한 순간)로서 단독으로 사용할 수 있지만, 刚("방금")은 동사에 붙어서 사용됩니다.

Structure: (Subject +) 刚才 + Verb

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    방금 뭐라고 하셨어요?

    just now刚才gāng cáiwho谁shéicame来lái了le?

    누가 방금 왔어요?

주의: 刚才 = 명사 (과거의 한 순간, 어디든 배치 가능); 刚 = 부사 (동사에 밀착). 我刚到 ("방금 도착했어요") vs 刚才谁来了?("방금 누가 왔어요?").

    Watch out

    • 刚才는 동사에 了/的를 취할 수 있음 (刚才到的); 刚 + 동사 형태는 일반적으로 그렇지 않음.
    5.4

    시간 / 행동 + 时 — "~할 때, ~하는 시점"

    English

时 is a compact, formal stand-in for 的时候 — "when, at the time of" — placed after a time or event. The thing to remember: it drops the 的.

    Structure: Time / Event + 时 ,……

    I我wǒinterviews面试miàn shìduring时shíoften经常jīng chángask问wènthis这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tí。

Remember: 时 is 的时候 in its Sunday best — same meaning, formal register, and no 的: 考试时 ✓, never 考试的时. In speech you'd just say 考试的时候.

    Watch out

    • Reserve it for writing or set phrases; everyday speech uses 的时候.
    한국어

时는 的时候를 간결하고 격식 있게 대체하는 말로, "~할 때, ~하는 시점"을 뜻하며 시간이나 행동 뒤에 배치됩니다. 기억할 점은 的을 생략한다는 것입니다.

    Structure: Time / Event + 时 ,……

이 질문은 면접 시 자주 묻습니다.

주의: 时는 的时候의 격식 있는 표현입니다 — 의미는 같고, 격식체이며, 的가 없습니다: 考试时 ✓, 절대 考试的时로 쓰지 않습니다. 구어에서는 考试的时候이라고만 말합니다.

    Watch out

    • 글쓰기나 고정구에서 사용하세요; 일상 회화에서는 的时候을 씁니다.
    5.5

    以后,…… — "미래에, 이제부터"

    English

At the start of a sentence, 以后 means "in the future, from now on, later." It mirrors 以前 exactly: it can sit at the front ("from now on"), after the subject, or after an event ("after …").

    Structure: 以后 + Subject + Verb · Event + 以后 ,……

    I我wǒfrom now on以后yǐ hòuwon't不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ了le。

I won't drink from now on.

class ends下课xià kèafter以后yǐ hòuwe,我们wǒ mengo去qùeat吃饭chī fàn。

    After class, let's go eat.

Remember: 以后 is the perfect mirror of 以前 — after an event = "after X" (下课以后 / 下课以前); at the front = "from now on" / "in the past." But it points to an indefinite future, not "in a moment" (that's 一会儿).

    Watch out

    • Don't let "later" mislead you into using it for "shortly" — 以后 is the open-ended future.
    한국어

문장 시작에 以后는 "미래에, 이제부터, 나중"을 뜻합니다. 以前과 정확히 대칭됩니다: 문장 앞("이제부터")이나 주어 뒤, 혹은 사건 뒤("… 이후")에 올 수 있습니다.

    구조: 以后 + Subject + Verb · Event + 以后 ,……

    I我wǒfrom now on以后yǐ hòuwon't不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ了le。

    Watch out

    • "나중"이라는 단어에 속아 "조금 뒤"에 쓸mayın — 以后는 열려 있는 미래입니다.
    5.6

…… ,后来 …… — "이후, 나중에" (과거 전용)

    English

后来 (hòulái) sequences past events — "afterwards, later on." The hard limit: both events must have already happened. 后(after) + 来(came) — it has, by definition, already come.

Structure: [Past Event 1] ,后来 [Past Event 2]

    at first开始kāi shǐmy我wǒparents父母fù mǔdidn't不bùagree同意tóng yìlater,后来hòu láiagreed同意tóng yì了le。

He used to be a chef; later he became the boss.

Remember: 后来 = a PAST "and then" (both events done and dusted). For a future "and then," switch to 然后. The 来 ("came") tells you it has already arrived.

    Watch out

    • Never use 后来 for a plan or future sequence — that's 然后.
    한국어

后来 (hòulái)는 과거의 사건들을 서술합니다 — "이후, 나중에." 엄격한 조건: 두 사건 모두 이미 happen했어야 합니다. 后(뒤) + 来(오다) — 정의상 이미 와버렸습니다.

Structure: [Past Event 1] ,后来 [Past Event 2]

    at first开始kāi shǐmy我wǒparents父母fù mǔdidn't不bùagree同意tóng yìlater,后来hòu láiagreed同意tóng yì了le。

    처음엔 부모님이 반대하셨지만, 나중에는 받아들이셨어요.

he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shīlater,后来hòu láibecame当dāng了lethe boss老板lǎo bǎn。

그는 예전에 요리사였는데, 나중에는 사장이 되었어요.

주의: 后来 = 과거의 "그리고 나서" (두 사건 모두 완료됨). 미래의 "그리고 나서"라면 然后로 바꾸세요. 来("왔다")는 이미 도착했다는 것을 알려줍니다.

    Watch out

    • 계획이나 미래의 순서에는 后来를 절대 쓰지 마세요 — 그것은 然后입니다.

    동사 + 着 — 지속되는 상태

    English

着 (zhe) after a verb freezes the action into a lingering state — the door is (standing) open, you are holding it. Think of 着 as a clip that keeps the verb "switched on." A second, very common use is Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2: V1着 sets the posture or manner, and V2 is the real action done in that state.

    Structure: Verb + 着 · Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2

you all你们nǐ mensit坐zuò着zheI,我wǒright away马上mǎ shàngcome back回来huí lái。

Stay seated — I'll be right back.

    she她tālikes to喜欢xǐ huanstand站zhàn着zheeat吃饭chī fàn。

She likes to eat standing up.

    he他tāsmiling笑xiào着zhesaid说shuōsorry对不起duì bu qǐ。

    Smiling, he said sorry.

Remember: 着 = the verb held on, lingering (门开着 = "the door stays open"); for an action actively in progress, use 在 (他在吃饭). In V1着V2, V1 is the backdrop, V2 the real action — 站着吃 = "eat while standing."

    Watch out

    • 着 is a state, not a play-by-play — pair it with 在/正在 only when you really mean "is currently …".

you all你们nǐ mensit坐zuò着zheI,我wǒright away马上mǎ shàngcome back回来huí lái。

    앉아 계세요 — 바로 돌아오겠습니다.

    she她tālikes to喜欢xǐ huanstand站zhàn着zheeat吃饭chī fàn。

    그녀는 서서 먹는 것을 좋아합니다.

    he他tāsmiling笑xiào着zhesaid说shuōsorry对不起duì bu qǐ。

    미소 지으며 사과했습니다.

기억하세요: 着 = 동사가 유지되고 지속됨 (门开着 = "문이 열려 있음"); actively 진행 중인 행동에는 在를 사용하십시오(他在吃饭). V1着V2 구조에서 V1는 배경이고, V2는 실제 행동—站着吃 = "서서 먹다."

    Watch out

    • 着은 상태이지 진행 상황을 나열하는 것이 아닙니다. 실제로 "지금 …하고 있다"라는 의미를 담고 있을 때만 在/正在와 함께 사용합니다.

    …… 了 — 상태의 변화

    English

Sentence-final 了 can announce a new situation — something has become the case that wasn't before. This "change" 了 (often called 了₂) is a different beast from the 了 that marks a completed action; here it means "now."

    Structure: Subject + Adjective + 了 · Subject + Verb + 了

    I我wǒhungry饿è了le。

    I'm hungry (now).

    raining下雨xià yǔ了le。

    It's raining (it wasn't before).

    the baby宝宝bǎo baocan会huìtalk说话shuō huà了le。

    The baby can talk now.

Remember: this 了 = "now, a new state" (饿了 = "hungry now"), not "did and finished." Whenever you'd add "now" in English, this is the 了 you want: 他当经理了 ("he's a manager now").

    Watch out

    • Same character, two jobs: change-of-state 了 (新情况) vs completed-action 了 (做完了). Context and position tell them apart.
    한국어

문장 말미의 了는 새로운 상황을 알릴 수 있습니다—이전에 없었던 것이 -now的情况가 된 것입니다. 이 "변화"를 나타내는 了(보통 了₂라고 함)는 완료된 행동을 표시하는 了와는 다른 개념입니다. 여기서는 "지금"을 의미합니다.

    구조: Subject + Adjective + 了 · Subject + Verb + 了

    I我wǒhungry饿è了le。

    지금 배가 고파요.

    raining下雨xià yǔ了le。

    …… 呢? — "너는 어때? / ~에 대해 어때?"

    English

呢 at the end lobs a question back without you having to repeat it — "and …? what about …?" A neat extra: a bare noun + 呢 (with no prior question) asks "where is …?"

    Structure: Topic + 呢?

    I我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎoyou,你nǐ呢ne?

    I'm well — and you?

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jī呢ne?

    Where's my phone?

Remember: 呢 = "…and X?" — it bounces the last question back (你呢? "and you?"). With nothing asked before, noun + 呢 means "where is X?" (钱呢? "where's the money?").

    Watch out

    • It rides on context — without a prior question or a "where is" sense, a bare 呢 has nothing to bounce off.
    한국어

呢이 문장 끝에 오면 반복하지 않고 질문을 다시 던집니다. "~도 어때?", "~에 대해서는 어때?"라는 뜻입니다. 재미있는 추가 기능으로, 앞선 질문 없이 단순 명사 + 呢(예: 钱呢?)는 "...은/는 어디 있어?"를 묻습니다.

    Structure: Topic + 呢?

    I我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎoyou,你nǐ呢ne?

    나는 잘 있어요 — 너는요?

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jī呢ne?

    내 전화는 어디 있니?

기억하세요: 呢 = "~하고 X는 어때?" — 직전의 질문을 다시 거슬러 올립니다 (你呢? "너는요?"). 앞서 아무런 질문이 없다면 명사 + 呢은 "X는 어디 있어?"를 의미합니다 (钱呢? "돈은 어디 있어?").

    Watch out

    • 이는 맥락에 의존합니다. 앞선 질문이나 "어디 있어"라는 의미가 없으면 단순한 呢만으로 거슬러 올릴 대상이 없습니다.

    的 / 得 / 地 — 세 가지 구조적 "de"

Three different characters, all pronounced de, each with exactly one job. Keeping them straight is the single most common slip in written Chinese — so sort them by what comes next.

    Structure: 的 + Noun · Verb + 得 + Complement · Adjective + 地 + Verb

    Watch out

    • A true adverb (不, 也, 都) needs no 地 — only an adjective used adverbially does (认真地, but just 都, never 都地).

    Watch out

Remember: no "for" word — the slot does it. Duration goes after the verb (学了一年, "studied for a year"), and an object hangs off a 的 (看了一天的电视, "watched TV all day").

    Watch out

    • Contrast 一年没学了 ("haven't studied in a year"), where the same duration flips to before the verb.

    Structure: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了 · (with object) Subj + Verb + Obj + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了

Remember: one 了 = a finished stretch; two 了 = still going. That trailing 了 means "…and counting." With an object, double the verb: 学中文学了一年了.

    Watch out

    • Without the final 了, 住了两年 reads as "lived there two years (then left)" — the second 了 is the whole "still ongoing" difference.

    English

A small club of feeling / mental verbs (喜欢, 想, 爱, 希望, 了解, 讨厌 …) act like adjectives and take 很 — which is exactly why beginners end up saying "very like!"

    Structure: Subject + 很 + [feeling verb]

    Watch out

    • As with adjectives, this 很 is often just the plain positive form, not a strong "very."

    动词 + 来 / 去 — 방향 보충어

    English

Tag 来 ("towards me") or 去 ("away from me") onto a verb to show which way the action moves relative to you, the speaker. These build into handy compounds — 进来 ("come in"), 出去 ("go out"), 起来 ("up"), 过来 ("over here").

    Structure: Verb + 来 / 去 · Verb + compound (上来 / 出去 …)

    I'm我wǒ在zàiupstairs楼上lóu shàngyou,你nǐcome up上来shàng lái。

    I'm upstairs — come up.

    please请qǐngstand站zhànup起来qǐ lái。

    Please stand up.

Remember: 来 = toward me, 去 = away from me — anchored to wherever the speaker stands. 进来 ("come in," I'm inside) vs 进去 ("go in," I'm outside).

    Watch out

    • With a place object, the place sits between the verb and 来 / 去: 回美国去 / 回美国 — never 回去美国.
    한국어

    동사에 来("내 쪽으로") 또는 去("내 쪽에서")를 붙여 행동이 어떤 방향으로 움직이는지 **화자(너)**와의 관계를 나타냅니다. 进来("들어와"), 出去("나와"), 起来("일어나"), 过来("여기 와") 등 실용적인 합성어로 발전합니다.

    구조: Verb + 来 / 去 · Verb + compound (上来 / 出去 …)

    I'm我wǒ在zàiupstairs楼上lóu shàngyou,你nǐcome up上来shàng lái。

    위층에 있어요 — 위로 올라와요.

    please请qǐngstand站zhànup起来qǐ lái。

    일어서 주세요.

    기억하세요: 来 = 내 쪽으로, 去 = 내 쪽에서 — 화자가 서 있는 곳에 따라 결정됩니다. 进来("들어와," 내가 안에 있을 때) vs 进去("들어가," 내가 밖에 있을 때).

    Watch out

    • 장소 목적어가 있을 때는 장소가 동사와 来 / 去 사이에 옵니다: 回美国去 / 回美国 — 回去美国은 절대 안 됩니다.
    12.2

    动词 + 得 / 不 + 结果 — 가능성 보충어

    English

Slot 得 ("can") or 不 ("can't") between a verb and its result to ask whether that result is achievable — 看得懂 ("can understand") vs 看不懂 ("can't"). They're built straight from result complements (懂, 完, 到, 见…).

    Structure: Verb + 得 / 不 + Complement

    you你nǐhear听tīngcan得deunderstand懂dǒngShanghainese上海话Shàng hǎi huà吗ma?

    Can you understand Shanghainese?

this kind of这种zhè zhǒngphone手机shǒu jīnow现在xiàn zàibuy买mǎican't不bùget到dào了le。

You can't get this kind of phone any more.

Remember: 得 = can, 不 = can't, wedged right after the verb (做得好 / 做不好). It asks about reaching a result — subtly different from 能 ("be allowed / have the chance to").

    Watch out

    • The negative 不 form is far more common in speech than the 得 form — you'll hear 看不懂 constantly.
    한국어

    동사와 결과 사이에 得("할 수 있음") 또는 不("할 수 없음")를 넣어 그 결과가 달성 가능한지 묻습니다 — 看得懂("알 수 있음") vs 看不懂("알 수 없음"). 이들은 결과 보충어(懂, 完, 到, 见…)를 그대로 가져옵니다.

    Structure: Verb + 得 / 不 + Complement

    you你nǐhear听tīngcan得deunderstand懂dǒngShanghainese上海话Shàng hǎi huà吗ma?

    상하이 방언을 알 수 있나요?

this kind of这种zhè zhǒngphone手机shǒu jīnow现在xiàn zàibuy买mǎican't不bùget到dào了le。

이런 종류의 휴대폰은 더 이상 구할 수 없어요.

    기억하세요: 得 = 할 수 있음, 不 = 할 수 없음, 동사 바로 뒤에 위치합니다 (做得好 / 做不好). 결과를 달성하는지를 묻는 것이므로 能("허락받음 / 기회가 있음")과 미묘하게 다릅니다.

    Watch out

    • 구어에서는 得 형태보다 부정형 不 형태가 훨씬 흔합니다 — 看不懂를 자주 들으실 것입니다.
    12.3

    动词 + 下去 — "계속 …하다"

    English

The complement 下去 means carry on with something already under way — "keep …ing, go on …ing." Picture the action continuing downward and onward into the future.

Structure: Subject + Verb + 下去

    talk说shuōkeep on下去xià qù。

    Keep talking.

    you你nǐkeep再zàidrinking喝hēon下去xià qùthen就jiùdrunk醉zuì了le。

If you keep drinking, you'll get drunk.

Remember: 下去 = "carry on from here" with something already started. Its potential form 不下去 = "can't carry on": 我听不下去了 ("I can't bear to keep listening").

    Watch out

    • It's specifically about continuing — don't use it to start something.
    한국어

보충어 下去는 이미 시작된 것을 계속한다는 뜻입니다 — "…을 계속하다, …을 이어가다". 행동이 미래로 아래로 이어져 간다는 이미지를 줍니다.

Structure: Subject + Verb + 下去

    talk说shuōkeep on下去xià qù。

    계속 말하세요.

    you你nǐkeep再zàidrinking喝hēon下去xià qùthen就jiùdrunk醉zuì了le。

    계속 마시면 취하게 될 거예요.

기억하세요: 下去 = "여기부터 계속"하여 이미 시작된 것. 가능성 형태인 不下去 = "계속할 수 없음": 我听不下去了("더 이상 들어갈 수 없어").

    Watch out

    • 특정히 계속함에 대한 것이므로, 무언가를 시작할 때는 사용하지 마십시오.

    动词 + 好 / 完 / 错 — 결과 보충어

    English

A short word right after the verb tells you how it turned out — 完 ("finished"), 好 ("done well / ready"), 错 ("wrong"). It usually takes a 了, and the object is often pulled to the front as a topic.

    Structure: Verb + 好 / 完 / 错 (+ 了)

    this这个zhè gecharacter字zìwrote写xiěwrong错cuò了le。

    You wrote this character wrong.

    the room房间fáng jiāncleaned打扫dǎ sǎospotless干净gān jìng了le吗ma?

Is the room all cleaned up?

Remember: the verb is the action, the complement is the outcome. 写 = "write," but 写错 = "wrote wrong," 写完 = "wrote to the finish." Common ones: 完, 好, 错, 懂, 到, 见, 干净, 清楚.

    Watch out

    • Negate the whole thing with 没 (没写完, "didn't finish writing"), not 不.
    한국어

동사 바로 뒤에 오는 짧은 단어는 어떻게 끝났는지 알려줍니다 — 完("끝남"), 好("잘됨 / 준비됨"), 错("틀림"). 보통 了를 취하며, 목적어는 주제로 앞당겨지는 경우가 많습니다.

    Structure: Verb + 好 / 完 / 错 (+ 了)

    this这个zhè gecharacter字zìwrote写xiěwrong错cuò了le。

    이 한자를 틀리게 썼어요.

    the room房间fáng jiāncleaned打扫dǎ sǎospotless干净gān jìng了le吗ma?

    방이 다 청소되었나요?

    기억하세요: 동사는 행동, 보충어는 결과입니다. 写 = "쓰다"이지만, 写错 = "틀리게 썼다", 写完 = "끝까지 썼다". 흔한 것: 完, 好, 错, 懂, 到, 见, 干净, 清楚.

    Watch out

    • 没으로 전체를 부정합니다 (没写完, "쓴 걸 끝내지 못함"). 不로는 부정할 수 없습니다.
  • 13 Conditional Statements
    13.1

    只要 … 就 … — "~만 하면"

    English

只要 … 就 … sets out a sufficient condition — "as long as A, (then) B." A on its own is enough to trigger B, even if it isn't the only route to B. Read 只要 as "you only need…" and 就 as "…then, right away."

    Structure: 只要 + Condition ,就 + Result

as long as只要zhǐ yàoyou你nǐhard努力nǔ lìstudy学习xué xíthen,就jiùwill会huìmake有yǒuprogress进步jìn bù。

As long as you study hard, you'll make progress.

whenever只要zhǐ yàoit rains下雨xià yǔshe,她tāthen就jiùmood心情xīn qíngbad不好bù hǎo。

Whenever it rains, she's in a bad mood.

Remember: 只要 = "you only NEED…" (enough, maybe one of several ways); 只有 = "ONLY if…" (the sole way). 只要 pairs with 就; 只有 pairs with 才. The 一 vs the 才 is the tell — see 只有 below.

    Watch out

    • 只要 reaches for 就 ("then, immediately"); swapping in 才 quietly changes the meaning to "only if."
    한국어

**只要 … 就 …**은 충분 조건을 설정합니다 — "A만 하면, B가 된다." A만으로 B를 유발하기에 충분하지만, B로 가는 유일한 경로는 아닐 수 있습니다. 只要를 "~만 필요해…"로, 就를 "…그러면, 즉시"로 읽으세요.

    Structure: 只要 + Condition ,就 + Result

as long as只要zhǐ yàoyou你nǐhard努力nǔ lìstudy学习xué xíthen,就jiùwill会huìmake有yǒuprogress进步jìn bù。

    Watch out

    • 只要 reaches for 就 ("그러면, 즉시"); swapping in 才 quietly changes the meaning to "오직 ~할 때만."
    13.2

    …… ,才 …… — "그때서야, 오직 ~한 후에야"

    English

才 between two clauses says the second happened only after / only because of the first — usually after real time, money, or effort was spent. English: "not until …, only after …."

    Structure: Condition ,才 + Result

Remember: 才 spotlights "how much it took" before the result came — two readings, lots of effort, a late hour. The result clause usually ends in a result complement (看懂, 买到), reporting what was finally achieved.

    Watch out

    • This 才 takes no 了 on its verb — the effort, not a tidy completion, is the point.

Remember: 才 spotlights "how much it took" before the result came — two readings, lots of effort, a late hour. The result clause usually ends in a result complement (看懂, 买到), reporting what was finally achieved. 기억할 것: 才는 결과에 도달하기 전에 얼마나 많은 시간이나 노력이 들었는지를 강조한다—두 번 읽음, 많은 노력, 늦은 시간 등. 결과절은 보통 결과보어(看懂, 买到)로 끝나며, 마침내 달성된 것을 보고한다.

    Watch out

    • This 才 takes no 了 on its verb — the effort, not a tidy completion, is the point. 이 才가 붙은 동사에는 了를 붙이지 않는다—정돈된 완료 상태가 아니라 그 노力的努力 자체가 핵심이다.

  • 15 Numbers and Measure Words
    15.1

    半 — "반" ( 그리고 위치 )

    English

The word 半 means "half." The only thing to master is where it sits relative to the measure word, and it follows one clean rule: "half a [unit]" puts 半 first; "[X] and a half" puts 半 after the measure word — exactly where the fraction lands in the English too.

    Structure: 半 + Measure Word + Noun (half a …) · Number + Measure Word + 半 + Noun (X and a half)

    half a半个bàn gehour小时xiǎo shí

    half an hour

    half a bottle of半瓶bàn píngwine酒jiǔ

    half a bottle of wine

    three三个sān geand a half半bànhours小时xiǎo shí

    three and a half hours

Remember: 半 mirrors English word order. "Half an hour" → 半 first (半个小时); "three and a half hours" → 半 after the measure word (三个半小时). Say the English and 半 lands in the same spot.

    Watch out

    • 天 and 年 are themselves measure words — use no 个: 半天 ✓ (not 半个天), 半年 ✓.
    한국어

半이라는 단어의 뜻은 '반'입니다. 익혀야 할 유일한 점은 량사(계산어)에 대해 어디에 위치하는가이며, 이는 하나의 명확한 규칙을 따릅니다: "반 [단위]"일 때는 半이 먼저 오며, "[X] 와 반"일 때는 半이 양사 뒤에 옵니다. 이는 영어에서 분수가 배치되는 위치와 정확히 일치합니다.

    구조: 半 + Measure Word + Noun (half a …) · Number + Measure Word + 半 + Noun (X and a half)

    half a半个bàn gehour小时xiǎo shí

    half an hour → 半个小时

    half a bottle of半瓶bàn píngwine酒jiǔ

half a bottle of wine → 半个酒瓶

    three三个sān geand a half半bànhours小时xiǎo shí

three and a half hours → 三个半小时

Remember: 半 mirrors English word order. "Half an hour" → 半 first (半个小时); "three and a half hours" → 半 after the measure word (三个半小时). Say the English and 半 lands in the same spot. 기억할 것: 半은 영문 어순을 그대로 반영한다. "Half an hour" → 半이 앞 (半个小时); "three and a half hours" → 半이 수량어 뒤 (三个半小时). 영문을 말하고 半이 같은 자리에 놓인다.

    Watch out

    • 天 and 年 are themselves measure words — use no 个: 半天 ✓ (not 半个天), 半年 ✓. 天과 年 자체는 수량어이므로 个을 쓰지 않는다: 半天 ✓ (不是 半个天), 半年 ✓.

    English

To say not a single one, build a total, emphatic negative: 一 + measure word (+ noun) + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + verb. The 也 / 都 is the muscle here — it's what turns "one" into "not even one." The object can also be pulled to the front as a topic.

    把 — "把它拿去..." (把 構文)

    English

Chinese grammar's famous hurdle — but the core idea is simple. 把 literally means "take / grab," so a 把 sentence is just "take [this specific thing] and [do something] to it." Reach for it when you want to spotlight what happens to an object — where it ends up, how it's changed, what's done with it.

The trap for English speakers: the object jumps in front of the verb, and the verb can never stand alone — it must be followed by the result (a complement, 了, a location…). "把书放" lands on a Chinese ear like "put the book…" and then trailing off.

    Structure: Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + (result) Literally: "I — take — the book — put — on the table." (我把书放在桌子上。)

    please请qǐng把bǎthe door门ménclose关上guān shàng。

    Please close the door.

    she她tā把bǎmy我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīput放fàngin在zàiher bag包里bāo lǐ了le。

She put my phone in her bag.

Remember: 把 carries the hand radical 扌 — picture a hand reaching out, grabbing the object, and dragging it in front of the verb. Grab it → then say what you did to it.

    Watch out

    • The object must be specific / known (the door, my phone), and the verb must report what happened to it — a bare verb won't do: 把书放在桌子上 ✓.
    • Negation goes before 把: 别把它扔了, 没把作业做完 — never inside the 把 phrase.
    • Feeling / perception verbs (喜欢, 想, 看见, 听) can't take 把 — there's no "result" to a feeling.
    • (把 is also a measure word for handled things — 一把伞 "an umbrella" — a different word entirely.)
    한국어

중국어 문법의 유명한 장벽이지만 핵심 개념은 간단합니다. 把는 글자 그대로 **"들다 / 잡다"**를 의미하므로 把 문장은 단순히 "[이 특정 사물]을 [무엇인가를]它对它做."입니다. 객체에 무슨 일이 일어나는지 강조하고 싶을 때 사용하십시오—그것이 어디로 가는지, 어떻게 변했는지, 무엇을 했는지.

The trap for English speakers: the object jumps in front of the verb, and the verb can never stand alone — it must be followed by the result (a complement, 了, a location…). "把书放" lands on a Chinese ear like "put the book…" and then trailing off. 영어 화자의 함정: 목적어가 동사 앞으로 이동하고, 동사는 절대 단독으로 서 있을 수 없다—결과(보어, 了, 위치 등)가 이어져야 한다. "把书放"는 중국인의 귀에 "put the book…"라고 듣고 나면 계속되지 않는 듯한 느낌을 준다.

    Structure: Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + (result) Literally: "I — take — the book — put — on the table." (我把书放在桌子上。) → 문자 그대로: "나 — 잡다 — 책 — 올리다 —机子上." (我把书放在桌子上。)

    please请qǐng把bǎthe door门ménclose关上guān shàng。

Please close the door. → 문을 닫아 주세요. (注意: 这里通常用“把门关上”或直接用动词“关门”,但作为把字句练习示例应强调结构) 请把门关上。

    she她tā把bǎmy我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīput放fàngin在zàiher bag包里bāo lǐ了le。

She put my phone in her bag. → 그녀는 내 휴대폰을 가방에 넣었다. (把字句: 她把我的手机放进了她的包里。) 她把我的手机放进了她的包里。

Remember: 把 carries the hand radical 扌 — picture a hand reaching out, grabbing the object, and dragging it in front of the verb. Grab it → then say what you did to it. 기억할 것: 把는 손 편편 扌을 포함한다—손이 뻗어나와 목적체를 잡고 동사 앞으로 끌어온 모습을 상상해 보라. 잡다 → 그러면它对它做了什么来说明。

    Watch out

    16.4

被 — "got done to" (수동태)

    English

A 被 sentence flips the focus to the receiver: "(it) got …ed (by …)." The thing acted upon becomes the subject, and the doer is optional. Like 把, the verb can't stand bare — it needs a result — and 被 sentences lean toward unfortunate events (things done to you).

    Structure: Receiver + 被 + (Doer) + Verb + (了 / result)

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīgot被bèistolen偷tōu了le。

    My phone got stolen.

    he他tāby被bèithe police警察jǐng chácaught抓zhuā了le。

He was caught by the police.

Remember: 把 leads with the doer, 被 leads with the victim. 小偷把手机偷了 ("the thief took the phone") ↔ 手机被小偷偷了 ("the phone got taken by the thief"). 被 even hides 衣 (a quilt/cover) — picture the action laid over the subject.

    Watch out

    • The verb can't be bare — it needs a 了 or result: 咖啡被我喝完了 ✓, not 咖啡被我喝.
    • The doer is optional: 我被骗了 ("I was tricked"), doer unknown or unimportant.
    • Negate before 被: 没被发现 ("wasn't discovered").
    • These sentences usually report something bad happening to the subject.
    한국어

被문장은 초점을 행위의 thụ동자로 뒤집습니다: "(그것)이 …되었다(…에 의해)." 행동당한 것이 주어가 되고, 행위자는 선택 사항입니다. 把처럼 동사가 맨몸으로 서 있을 수 없으며 결과를 필요로 하며, 被문장은 보통 불운한 사건(당신에게 일어난 일)을 나타내는 경향이 있습니다.

    Structure: Receiver + 被 + (Doer) + Verb + (了 / result)

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīgot被bèistolen偷tōu了le。

    내 휴대폰이 도둑맞았다.

    he他tāby被bèithe police警察jǐng chácaught抓zhuā了le。

    그는 경찰에 체포당했다.

** 기억하세요: 把는 행위자를 앞세우고, 被는 피해자를 앞세운다. 小偷把手机偷了 ("도둑이 휴대폰을 훔쳤다") ↔ 手机被小偷偷了 ("휴대폰이 도둑에게 훔겨졌다"). 被甚至在隐藏衣(이불/덮개)까지 — 행위가 주체 위에 덮여진 것을 상상해 보십시오.

    Watch out

    English

To paint what is where, Chinese runs place — verb — 着 — thing: "(at the place) there sits / lies / hangs a …." The verb tells you how the thing is positioned (lying, standing, hanging). A close cousin is Place + 是 + thing, meaning "all there is at the place is …."

    Structure: Place + Verb + 着 + Noun Phrase

on the table桌子上zhuō zi shànglies放fàng着zhea一本yì běnbook书shū。

There's a book lying on the table.

in the hall大厅里dà tīng lǐare standing站zhàn着zhesome一些yì xiēpolice警察jǐng chá。

Some police are standing in the hall.

Remember: the place comes first (the camera pans to a spot), then the verb + 着 freezes how the thing sits there. English starts with "there's a …"; Chinese starts with the location.

    Watch out

    • The verb is stative (放, 站, 坐, 挂) — it describes a position, not an active action.
    • The 是 version says the place holds only that: 墙上都是照片 ("the wall is all photos").
    한국어

어디에 무엇이 있는지 표현할 때, 중국어는 장소 — 동사 — 着 — 사물의 순서를 따릅니다: "(그 장소에) …가 놓여/서/걸려 있다." 동사는 그 사물이 어떻게 배치되어 있는지를 나타냅니다(눕혀 있음, 서 있음, 걸려 있음). 근친 표현으로 Place + 是 + thing이 있는데, 이는 "그 장소에 있는 것은 오직 …뿐"이라는 의미입니다.

    Structure: Place + Verb + 着 + Noun Phrase

on the table桌子上zhuō zi shànglies放fàng着zhea一本yì běnbook书shū。

    책이 책상 위에 놓여 있습니다.

in the hall大厅里dà tīng lǐare standing站zhàn着zhesome一些yì xiēpolice警察jǐng chá。

    일부 경찰들이 로비에서 서 있습니다.

기억하세요: 장소가 먼저 나옵니다(카메라가 특정 지점을 비추듯), 이후 동사 + 着가 그 자리에 사물이 어떤 형태로 존재하는지를 고정시킵니다. 영어는 "there's a …"로 시작하지만, 중국어는 위치로 시작합니다.

    Watch out

    • 동사는 정적 상태(stative) 입니다(放, 站, 坐, 挂) — 위치를 묘사할 뿐 능동적인 행위가 아닙니다.
    • 是 버전은 해당 장소가 오직 그것을 담고 있음을 말하며: 墙上都是照片 ("벽 전체가 사진으로 뒤덮여 있다").
    17.2

    想 + 의문사 + 就 + 의문사 — "마음대로 하라"

    English

Echo a question word on both sides of 就 and you get "(do) whatever / wherever / whenever you like." The same question word appears twice — once setting the choice, once cashing it in.

    Structure: 想 + Verb + QW + 就 + Verb + QW

    want想xiǎngeat吃chīwhat什么shén methen就jiùeat吃chīwhatever什么shén me。

    Eat whatever you want.

    want想xiǎnggo去qùwhere哪儿nǎrthen就jiùgo去qùwherever哪儿nǎr。

    Go wherever you like.

Remember: the same question word both times — 什么…就…什么, 谁…就…谁, 哪儿…就…哪儿. Read it as "whatever you pick, that's what you get." It's the language of total freedom.

    Watch out

    • Keep the question word identical on both sides — mixing 什么 with 哪儿 breaks it.
    한국어

就 양쪽에 의문사를 반복하면 "(하길) 무엇이든 / 어디든 / 언제든"을 얻을 수 있습니다. 같은 의문사가 두 번 등장합니다—하나가 선택을 설정하고, 하나가 이를 실현합니다.

    Structure: 想 + Verb + QW + 就 + Verb + QW

    want想xiǎngeat吃chīwhat什么shén methen就jiùeat吃chīwhatever什么shén me。

    Watch out

    • 양쪽의 의문사를 동일하게 유지하십시오 — 什么와 哪儿를 섞으면 문장이 깨집니다.
    17.3

    의문사 + 都 / 也 — "모두 / 아무나"

    English

A question word + 都 (or 也) sweeps over all cases — "everyone, anything, anywhere." Add a 不 / 没 and it flips to the total negative: "none, nothing, nowhere."

    Structure: Question Word + 都 / 也 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéiall都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    Everyone loves good food.

    I我wǒanything什么shén meat all都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto eat吃chī。

I don't want to eat anything.

Remember: question word + 都 = "all / every"; add 不 / 没 = "none / nothing." 谁都喜欢 ("everyone likes") → 谁都不信 ("nobody believes"). 也 stands in for 都, especially in negatives (什么也没说, "said nothing").

    Watch out

    • The question word here is not asking anything — it's the indefinite "any," swept up by 都 / 也.
    한국어

의문사에 都(또는 也)를 붙이면 모든 경우를 포괄하여 "누구나, 무언가, 어디든"을 뜻합니다. 여기에 不 또는 没을 추가하면 전 부정으로 바뀝니다: "아무도, 아무것도, 어디에도 없음."

    Structure: Question Word + 都 / 也 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéiall都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    모두 좋은 음식을 좋아한다.

    I我wǒanything什么shén meat all都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto eat吃chī。

    나는 아무것도 먹고 싶지 않다.

기억하세요: 의문사 + 都 = "모두 / 하나씩"; 不 / 没 추가 = "아무도 / 아무것도 아님." 谁都喜欢 ("누구나 좋아한다") → 谁都不信 ("아무도 믿지 않는다"). 也是 都를 대신하며, 특히 부정문에서 많이 쓰입니다(什么也没说, "아무것도 하지 않고 말했다").

    Watch out

    • 이那里的 의문사는 질문하는 것이 아니라, 都 / 也에 의해 포괄되는 불특정 대명사 "아무"입니다.
    17.4

    越来越 + 형용사 — "점점 더 / 갈수록"

    English

越来越 before an adjective (or verb) means a quality keeps climbing as time passes — "more and more …." Literally "more-comes-more." It usually closes with 了 to mark the change in motion.

    Structure: Subject + 越来越 + Adjective + 了

the weather天气tiān qìmore and more越来越yuè lái yuècold冷lěng了le。

The weather is getting colder and colder.

I我wǒmore and more越来越yuè lái yuèdon't不bùtrust相信xiāng xìnhim他tā了le。

I trust him less and less.

Remember: 越来越 = "more-comes-more" — one thing changing over time. Its look-alike 越…越… (previous file) links two things ("the more A, the more B"). Time → 越来越; pairing → 越…越….

    Watch out

    • With a negative verb, English flips to "less and less": 越来越不懂 ("understand less and less").
    한국어

越来越는 형용사(또는 동사) 앞에 위치하여, 그 특성이 시간이 지날수록 계속 높아짐을 의미합니다. "more and more …"에 해당하며, 문자적으로는 "더-오다-더"라는 뜻입니다. 일반적으로 了를 붙여 변화가 발생했음을 나타냅니다.

    Structure: Subject + 越来越 + Adjective + 了

the weather天气tiān qìmore and more越来越yuè lái yuècold冷lěng了le。

    날씨가 점점 더 추워지고 있습니다.

I我wǒmore and more越来越yuè lái yuèdon't不bùtrust相信xiāng xìnhim他tā了le。

    그에게 대한 제 믿음이 줄어듭니다.

기억하세요: 越来越 = "더-오다-더" — 한 가지 것이 시간에 따라 변함. 이와 형태가 유사한 越…越… (이전 파일)은 두 가지 것을 연결함 ("A일수록 B도 더 많이"). 시간 → 越来越; 쌍 → 越…越….

    Watch out

    • 부정 동사와 함께 사용할 때, 영어로는 "less and less"로 바뀜: 越来越不懂 ("점점 덜 이해함").
    17.5

    의문사 — "some / a certain"

    English

A bare question word can quietly mean a vague "some / a certain" — 哪儿 ("somewhere"), 谁 ("someone"), 什么 ("something"), 什么时候 ("sometime"). It isn't a question at all; tone and small cues (过, 点儿, 吧) flag the difference.

Structure: Question Word (used as "some")

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒ在zàisomewhere哪儿nǎrhave met见过jiàn guo。

I've met this person somewhere before.

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāido做zuòa bit of点儿diǎnrsomething什么shén me。

    We should do something.

Remember: a question word with no rising "question" tone = "some." 谁 ("who?") vs 谁 ("someone"); 什么 ("what?") vs 什么 ("something"). Cues like 过, 点儿, or 吧 confirm the "some" reading — 什么时候…吧 = "sometime," not "when?".

    Watch out

    • Context does the work — there's no extra word; only the falling tone and the cues distinguish "some" from a real question.
    한국어

단순 의문사는 조용히 모호한 **"some / a certain"**의 의미를 내포할 수 있음 — 哪儿 ("어딘가"), 谁 ("누군가"), 什么 ("무언가"), 什么时候 ("어느 때" 또는 "어제/내일 등 특정 시기"). 전혀 의문이 아닌 문장이며, 어조 및 작은 단서(过, 点儿, 吧)로 이를 구분함.

Structure: Question Word (used as "some")

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒ在zàisomewhere哪儿nǎrhave met见过jiàn guo。

나는 이 사람을 어딘가에서 전에 본 적이 있다.

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāido做zuòa bit of点儿diǎnrsomething什么shén me。

    무언가를 해야 한다.

기억하세요: 상승하는 '의문' 어조 없는 의문사 = "some". 谁 ("누구?") vs 谁 ("누군가"); 什么 ("무엇?") vs 什么 ("무언가"). 过, 点儿, 또는 吧 같은 단서는 "some" 읽음을 확인함 — 什么时候…吧 = "어느 때", "when?"이 아님.

    Watch out

    • 맥락이 역할을 함 — 추가 단어가 없으며, 하강하는 어조와 단서만이 "some"과 실제 의문을 구분함.
    17.6

为了 — "in order to, for the sake of"

    English

为了 spells out a purpose or beneficiary — "in order to, for the sake of." It usually opens the sentence ("In order to X, …"), or appears as "… 是为了 …" ("the reason is to …").

Structure: 为了 + Purpose ,Subject + Action · Action + 是为了 + Purpose

    才 vs 就 — "늦다/어렵다" vs "일찍/쉬움"

    English

These two adverbs are a matched pair pulling in opposite directions. Both sit before the verb after a time or condition, but 才 says something happened later or with more effort than expected (often a touch impatient), while 就 says it happened sooner or more easily than expected.

He was already here by six.

Remember: 才 drags late (no 了); 就 jumps early (+ 了). A neat tell: the 了 lines up with 就 ("already happened, 就到了") and avoids 才 ("late, nothing tidily completed, 才到").

    Watch out

    • 才 = slower / later / harder than expected (sometimes annoyed); 就 = faster / earlier / easier.

同一个 "just(방금)"이라는 의미로, 두 가지 다른 품사에 속합니다. 刚은 부사로 "just(방금)"이며, 동사 바로 앞에 위치합니다. 刚才은 시간 명사로 "a moment ago(방금 전, 대략 최근 1~30분 내)"이며, 독립적으로 쓰이거나 명사를 수식할 수도 있습니다.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnjust刚gāngleft走zǒu。

    사장님이 방금 가셨습니다.

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    방금 뭐라고 하셨어요?

기억하세요: 刚 = 부사, 동사와 밀착 (刚到); 刚才 = 명사, 독립적 (刚才的事, "방금전의 일"). 刚은 동사가 이미 결과 어미를 가지고 있으면 了를 생략하는 경우가 많습니다. 刚才는 명확한 과거이며, 반드시 了와 함께 쓰입니다.

    Watch out

    • 형용사 앞에서는 오직 刚 / 刚刚만 가능합니다: 天刚晴 ("하늘이 방금 맑아졌음") — 절대 刚才晴은 불가능합니다.

有点 vs 一点 — "약간 너무" vs "조금(더)"

    English

Both translate as "a bit," but they sit on opposite sides of the adjective and carry opposite moods. 有点(儿) goes before an adjective with a hint of complaint ("a bit too …"); 一点(儿) goes after an adjective to mark a small amount or degree (in comparisons or requests).

    today今天jīn tiānI'm我wǒa bit有点yǒu diǎntired累lèi。

    I'm a bit tired today.

    please请qǐngspeak说shuōslowly慢màna little一点yì diǎn。

Please speak a little more slowly.

Remember: 有点 + Adj = a grumble before ("a bit too tired"); Adj + 一点 = a measured amount after ("a little slower"). Position tells you the mood: before = complaint, after = neutral nudge.

    Watch out

    • 一点 + Noun = "a little (of)": 一点水, 一点钱 — 有点 can't do this.
    • 一点也不 / 一点也没 = "not at all": 一点也不辣.

    please请qǐngspeak说shuōslowly慢màna little一点yì diǎn。

    조금 더 천천히 말해 주세요.

기억하세요: 有点 + Adj = 불만을前置 ("약간 too 피곤하다"); Adj + 一点 = 정량적 양을后置 ("조금 느리다"). 위치가 뉘앙스를 결정합니다: 앞 = 불만, 뒤 = 중립적인 제언.

    Watch out

    • 一点 + Noun = "a little (of)(조금의)": 一点水 (물 조금), 一点钱 (돈 조금) — 有点은 이 용법이 불가능합니다.
    • 一点也不 / 一点也没 = "not at all(아무것도 ~하지 않음)": 一点也不辣 (아무런 매운맛도 없음).

再 vs 又 — 미래 '다시' vs 과거 '다시'

    English

Both mean "again," but they split cleanly on time: 再 is "again" for something not yet done (a future or intended repeat); 又 is "again" for something that has already happened.

    welcome欢迎huān yíngagain再zàicome来lái!

    Come again!

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    You're late again.

Remember: 再 looks forward (plan/intend, no 了); 又 looks back (already repeated, usually + 了). 欢迎再来 (please come again) vs 你又来了 (here you are again). The 了 sides with 又.

    Watch out

    • 再 also means "another" (再来一个) and "(do A) then (B)" (先…再…); 又 also stacks qualities (又高又帅).
    한국어

둘 다 "again(다시)"를 의미하지만, 시간에 따라 명확히 나뉩니다. 再는 아직 하지 않은 일에 대한 "again(다시)"로, 미래 또는 의도된 반복을 나타냅니다. 又는 이미 발생한 일에 대한 "again(다시)"입니다.

    welcome欢迎huān yíngagain再zàicome来lái!

    다시 오세요!

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    너ared 늦었어 again.

기억하세요: 再는 미래를 향함 (계획/의도, 了 사용 금지); 又는 과거를 향함 (이미 반복됨, 보통 + 了). 欢迎再来 (다시 오세요) vs 你又来了 (여기 다시 왔네). 了는 又와 함께 옵니다.

    Watch out

    • 再는 또한 "another(또 하나)"를 의미합니다 (再来一个). 또한 "(A를 한 후) 그다음 (B를 하라)"를 나타냅니다 (先…再…). 又는 성질을 쌓아 "又高又帅 (키가 크고 예쁘다)"처럼 쓸 수 있습니다.

还是 vs 或者 — "or"의 질문과 서술문 구별

    English

This is the single most-tested "or" distinction in Chinese, so make it automatic. Both words mean "or" and present a choice, but they split by sentence type: 还是 offers the choice in a question (you're asking someone to pick); 或者 lists alternatives in a statement (you're just telling).

    you你nǐdrink喝hētea茶cháor还是hái shìcoffee咖啡kā fēi?

Do you want tea or coffee?

    tea茶cháor或者huò zhěcoffee咖啡kā fēieither都dōuis fine行xíng。

Tea or coffee — either's fine.

    I我wǒdon't不bùknow知道zhī dàohe他tāsupports支持zhī chíor还是hái shìopposes反对fǎn duì。

I don't know whether he's for or against.

Remember: ? → 还是, . → 或者. Asking someone to choose takes 还是; stating open options takes 或者. And a hidden question — "I don't know whether A or B" — still counts as a question inside, so it keeps 还是.

    Watch out

    • That embedded-question case (不知道…还是…) trips people up — there's no question mark, but the choice is still being asked, so 还是 stays.
    한국어

중국어에서 가장 많이 출제되는 "or(혹은)"의 차이점이므로 자동적으로使い分けて야 합니다. 둘 다 "or"이며 선택지를 제시하지만, 문장 유형에 따라 나뉩니다. 还是는 질문문에서 선택지를 제안합니다 (상대편에게 고르라고 묻는 경우). 或者는 서술문에서 대안들을 나열합니다 (단순히 알려주는 경우).

    you你nǐdrink喝hētea茶cháor还是hái shìcoffee咖啡kā fēi?

    차라 커피 중哪一个?

    tea茶cháor或者huò zhěcoffee咖啡kā fēieither都dōuis fine行xíng。

차든 커피든, 둘 중 뭐든 괜찮아요.

    I我wǒdon't不bùknow知道zhī dàohe他tāsupports支持zhī chíor还是hái shìopposes反对fǎn duì。

    그가 찬성인지 반대인지 모르겠어요.

기억하세요: ? → 还是, . → 或者. 상대방에게 선택을 묻을 때는 还是를, 열려 있는 option을 서술할 때는 或者를 사용합니다. 또한 숨겨진 질문 — "A인지 B인지 모른다" — 도 내부적으로 질문이므로 还是를 유지합니다.

    Watch out

    • 해당 종속문 상황 (不知道…还是…) 은 사람들이 혼동하기 쉽습니다. 물음표가 없지만 선택을 여전히 묻고 있는 것이므로 还是가 그대로 유지됩니다.

以后 vs 然后 vs 后来 — 세 종류의 "after / then"

    English

All three brush against "after / then," but each owns a different slot — so the trick is to match the situation to the word:

    • 以后 — "after / from now on," and it can point to the future: 以后想开公司 ("I want to start a company someday").
    • 然后 — "and then," joining the next step in a sequence (any time frame): 先吃饭,然后看电影.
    • 后来 — "later, afterwards," narrating the next thing that happened — in the past only.

I我wǒin future以后yǐ hòuwant to想xiǎngstart开kāia company公司gōng sī。

I want to start a company someday.

first先xiāneat吃饭chī fànand then,然后rán hòuwatch看kàna film电影diàn yǐng。

Eat first, and then watch a film.

    later后来hòu láihe他tāwent去qù了lethe US美国Měi guó。

Later he went to the US.

Remember: the quick test — future → 以后, next step → 然后, past story → 后来. Only 后来 is locked to the past; 以后 can reach into the future, and 然后 chains steps in any time frame.

    Watch out

    • 以后 and 后来 can both translate as "later," but 后来 only narrates what has already happened — never a future "then."
    한국어

    세 단어 모두 "after / then(후에/그리고)

I我wǒin future以后yǐ hòuwant to想xiǎngstart开kāia company公司gōng sī。

    나중에 회사를设立하고 싶어.

first先xiāneat吃饭chī fànand then,然后rán hòuwatch看kàna film电影diàn yǐng。

먼저 밥을 먹고, 그리고 영화를 보러 가.

    later后来hòu láihe他tāwent去qù了lethe US美国Měi guó。

    나중에 그는 미국으로 갔다.

기억하세요: 빠른 테스트 — 미래 → 以后, 다음 단계 → 然后, 과거 이야기 → 后来. 오직 后来만이 과거에 고정되어 있으며, 以后는 미래를 향해 가고, 然后는 모든 시간 범위에서 단계를 이어줍니다.

    Watch out

    • 以后와 后来는 모두 "later(나중에)"로 번역될 수 있지만, 后来는 이미 일어난 일만 서술하며, 절대 미래의 "then(그리고/그 후)"으로는 쓰이지 않습니다.
