    跟 … 比(起来) — "compared with": A와 비교할 때

To lead with a comparison, open with with / and跟gēn A than / compared to比bǐ((after a verb) indicating…起来qǐ lái), then comment on B — "compared with A, B is …." It sets the yardstick first, then makes the point. (with / and跟gēn ≈ and / with和hé here; with / and跟gēn is slightly more common.) B can also start the sentence: 비교를 문장 앞부분에서 시작하려면 **with / and跟gēn A than / compared to比bǐ((after a verb) indicating…起来qǐ lái)**로 열고 B에 대해 설명합니다. "A와 비교했을 때, B는…"이라는 의미입니다. 먼저 기준을 제시하고 결론을 내립니다. (여기서 with / and跟gēn ≈ and / with和hé; with / and跟gēn이 다소 더 흔함.) B가 문장 맨 앞에 올 수도 있습니다.

    Structure: 跟 + A + 比(起来) ,B + Comment

    compared with跟gēnShanghai上海Shàng hǎi比bǐmy,我wǒhometown老家lǎo jiā的deprices物价wù jiàvery很hěnlow低dī。

Compared with Shanghai, prices in my hometown are very low.: 상하이와 비교했을 때, 고향의 물가는 매우 낮습니다.

the younger sister妹妹mèi meicompared with跟gēnthe elder姐姐jiě jie比起来bǐ qǐ láia bit有点yǒu diǎnshy害羞hài xiū。

Compared with her elder sister, the younger one is a bit shy.: 누나와 비교했을 때, 여동생은 조금 수줍습니다.

Remember: with / and跟gēn A than / compared to比bǐ = "holding it up against A…" — the benchmark first, the verdict second. Note that unlike a bare than / compared to比bǐ sentence, this framing allows degree / adjective linker很hěn ((commodity) prices物价wù jiàdegree / adjective linker很hěnlow低dī), because it's a comment, not a direct A-than / compared to比bǐ-B: 기억하세요: with / and跟gēn A than / compared to比bǐ = "A와 대조해 보았을 때…" — 기준을 먼저 제시하고 결론을 나옵니다. 단순한 than / compared to比bǐ 문장과 달리 이 구조에서는 degree / adjective linker很hěn((commodity) prices物价wù jiàdegree / adjective linker很hěnlow低dī)를 사용할 수 있는데, 이는 직접적인 A-than / compared to比bǐ-B 비교가 아니라 서술이기 때문입니다.

    Watch out

    • For a plain "A is more X than B," the basic than / compared to比bǐ is enough: Athan / compared to比bǐBhigh高gāo: 단순히 "A가 B보다 X가 많다"라면 기본 than / compared to比bǐ만으로 충분합니다: A가 B보다 높다.

    比 … 更 / 还 — "even more": A보다 더/아직도

In a than / compared to比bǐ comparison, drop more更gèng or still / also还hái before the adjective to mean the first thing is even more so — often with a sly hint that "(B is already very …, and A beats it)": than / compared to比bǐ 비교문에서 형용사 앞에 more更gèng 또는 still / also还hái을 넣으면 첫 번째 대상이 더욱/아직도 그렇다는 의미를 줍니다. 종종 "(B가 이미 매우 ~한데, A가 그보다 더 다)"라는 함축적 뉘앙스를 담습니다.

    Structure: Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + 更 / 还 + Adjective

    Shanghai上海Shàng hǎithan比bǐNew York纽约Niǔ yuēpopulation人口rén kǒueven更gèngbigger多duō。

Shanghai's population is even bigger than New York's.: 상하이의 인구는 뉴욕보다 훨씬 많습니다.

    he他tāthan比bǐYao Ming姚明Yáo Míngeven还háitaller高gāo。

He's even taller than Yao Ming.: 그는 야오밍보다 더 키가 큽니다.

Remember: more更gèng / still / also还hái = "even more." still / also还hái especially smuggles in "(and the other is already sky-high)" — than / compared to比bǐYao Ming (1980-), retired…姚明yáo míngstill / also还háihigh高gāo quietly admits Yao Ming is already a giant. Crucial rule: a than / compared to比bǐ sentence never takes degree / adjective linker很hěn / very非常fēi cháng — degree comes from more更gèng / still / also还hái / many多duō(completed / change)了le: 기억하세요: more更gèng / still / also还hái = "even more". 특히 still / also还hái에는 "(다른 쪽이 이미 하늘처럼 높는데)"라는 뉘앙스가 실립니다. than / compared to比bǐYao Ming (1980-), retired…姚明yáo míngstill / also还háihigh高gāo는 야오밍이 이미 거인임을 암시합니다. 중요한 규칙: than / compared to比bǐ 문장에서는 절대 degree / adjective linker很hěn / very非常fēi cháng을 쓰지 않습니다. 정도는 more更gèng / still / also还hái / many多duō(completed / change)了le에서 표현합니다.

    Watch out

    • than / compared to比bǐ + degree / adjective linker很hěn is a classic mistake: say than / compared to比bǐhe / him他tāhigh高gāo or than / compared to比bǐhe / him他tāmore更gènghigh高gāo, never than / compared to比bǐhe / him他tādegree / adjective linker很hěnhigh高gāo: than / compared to比bǐ + degree / adjective linker很hěn 조합은 고전적인 실수입니다. than / compared to比bǐhe / him他tāhigh高gāo 또는 than / compared to比bǐhe / him他tāmore更gènghigh高gāo이라고 말해야 하며, 절대 than / compared to比bǐhe / him他tādegree / adjective linker很hěnhigh高gāo(modifier / structural particle)的de라고 해서는 안 됩니다.

比 … 形容词 + 多了 — "much more": A보다 훨씬

    To stress a big gap, close a than / compared to比bǐ comparison with many多duō(completed / change)了le (or (degree marker)得demany多duō / 很多hěn duō) — "much more …." many多duō(completed / change)了le also works on its own: many好多hǎo duō(completed / change)了le ("much better"). 큰 격차를 강조하려면 than / compared to比bǐ 비교문을 many多duō(completed / change)了le(또는 (degree marker)得demany多duō / 很多hěn duō)로 끝냅니다. "훨씬 더~"라는 뜻입니다. many多duō(completed / change)了le는 단독으로도 사용 가능합니다: many好多hǎo duō(completed / change)了le("훨씬 낫다").

    Structure: Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + Adjective + 多了 / 得多 / 很多

    pinyin拼音pīn yīnthan比bǐcharacters汉字Hàn zìeasy容易róng yìmuch多了duō le。

Pinyin is much easier than characters.: 병음은 한자보다 훨씬 쉽습니다.

taking坐zuòthe bullet train高铁gāo tiěthan比bǐtaking坐zuòthe plane飞机fēi jīconvenient方便fāng biànmuch more得多de duō。

The bullet train is much more convenient than flying.: 신칸센은 비행기 타는 것보다 훨씬 편리합니다.

Remember: size the gap at the end: big gap → many多duō(completed / change)了le / (degree marker)得demany多duō / 很多hěn duō; small gap → a bit一点yì diǎn (easy容易róng yìa bit一点yì diǎn, "a little easier"). And, again, never degree / adjective linker很hěn / very非常fēi cháng inside a than / compared to比bǐ sentence: 기억하세요: 격차 크기는 문장 끝에서 결정합니다. 큰 격차 → many多duō(completed / change)了le / (degree marker)得demany多duō / 很多hěn duō; 작은 격차 → a bit一点yì diǎn (easy容易róng yìa bit一点yì diǎn, "약간 쉽다"). 또한 than / compared to比bǐ 문장 내부에서는 절대 degree / adjective linker很hěn / very非常fēi cháng을 쓰지 마십시오.

    Watch out

    • many多duō(completed / change)了le / (degree marker)得demany多duō / 很多hěn duō all sit after the adjective: 高多gāo duō(completed / change)了le, 高得gāo démany多duō — never many多duō(completed / change)了lehigh高gāo: many多duō(completed / change)了le / (degree marker)得demany多duō / 很多hěn duō는 모두 형용사 뒤에 위치합니다: 高多gāo duō(completed / change)了le, 高得gāo démany多duō — 절대 many多duō(completed / change)了lehigh高gāo(modifier / structural particle)的de라고 하지 않습니다.

    A + 有 + B + 形容词 + 吗? — "as … as?": A가 B만큼 ~한가?

to have / there is有yǒu는 "have"보다 더 많은 기능을 함 — 비교에서는 "as … as"를 의미함: "A to have / there is有yǒu B + Adj" = "A는 B만큼 [Adj]하다." 주로 의문문에 사용되며, B는 측정 기준이 되는 benchmarks로, 보통 so much这么zhè me / like that那么nà me과 함께 쓰임.

    Structure: A + 有 + B + (这么 / 那么) + Adjective + 吗?

    he他tāas有yǒume我wǒhandsome帅shuài吗ma?

Is he as handsome as me?: 그는 나만큼 예쁜가요?

    he他tāas有yǒuYao Ming姚明Yáo Míngthat那么nà metall高gāo吗ma?

Is he really as tall as Yao Ming?: 그가 정말 야오밍만큼 키가 큰가요?

Remember: to have / there is有yǒu = "reaches as far as" (as … as); not have / haven't没有méi yǒu = "falls short of" (not as … as). The question to have / there is有yǒu…(yes/no ?)吗ma? asks "does A measure up to B?"; the answer is to have / there is有yǒu / not have / haven't没有méi yǒu (not have / haven't没有méi yǒu你帅nǐ shuài, "not as handsome as you"): 기억하세요: to have / there is有yǒu = "reaches as far as" (as … as); not have / haven't没有méi yǒu = "falls short of" (not as … as). 질문문 to have / there is有yǒu…(yes/no ?)吗ma?는 "A가 B와 동등한가?"를 묻습니다. 답은 to have / there is有yǒu / not have / haven't没有méi yǒu입니다 (not have / haven't没有méi yǒu你帅nǐ shuài, "당신만큼 예쁘지 않다").

    Watch out

    • Used mainly in questions and negatives, not plain statements. For a plain statement use with / and跟gēn…same一样yī yàng ("the same as") or than / compared to比bǐ ("more than"): 주로 질문문과 부정문에서 쓰이며, 평서문으로는 사용하지 않습니다. 평서문에서는 with / and跟gēn…same一样yī yàng("see 胡同同tóng(bound form) up上shàng") 또는 than / compared to比bǐ("보다")를 사용하십시오.
