Adjektiva + 极了 — "…to the max" (sangat sekali)

    English

When something is off the charts — the best, the worst, the most you've ever seen — tack 极了 (jíle) onto the adjective. 极 means "the furthest point, the extreme" (it's the 极 of 北极, the North Pole), so 好极了 reads literally as "good — all the way to the pole." It works for praise and complaints alike, and it lives in casual, spoken Chinese.

Unusually for a degree phrase, 极了 clamps straight onto the adjective with no 得 — and the 了 is welded on: drop it and the sentence is simply wrong.

Structure: Subject + Adjective + 极了 Literally: "[subject is] adjective — to the extreme."

    this这个zhè geidea主意zhǔ yigood好hǎoextremely极了jí le。

    This idea is perfect.

the college exam高考gāo kǎothat day那天nà tiānI,我wǒnervous紧张jǐn zhāngextremely极了jí le。

I was incredibly nervous on the day of the gaokao.

    that那个nà geboy男孩nán háiannoying讨厌tǎo yànextremely极了jí le!

    That boy is unbelievably annoying!

Remember: 极 = pole, the furthest point (北极 = North Pole). 好极了 pushes "good" all the way to the pole — and 极 never travels without its 了.

    Watch out

    • The 了 is non-negotiable: 好极了 ✓, never 好极.
    • No 得 — it attaches bare (好极了), unlike most degree complements (好得很).
    • 极了 already carries the emphasis, so don't pile on 很 or 非常: 好极了, never 很好极了.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Ketika sesuatu itu off the charts — yang terbaik, terburuk, paling yang pernah Anda lihat — tambahkan 极了 (jíle) setelah adjektiva.

Struktur: Subject + Adjective + 极了 Secara harfiah: "[subjek adalah] adjektiva — hingga ke ekstrem."

    this这个zhè geidea主意zhǔ yigood好hǎoextremely极了jí le。

    Ide ini sempurna.

the college exam高考gāo kǎothat day那天nà tiānI,我wǒnervous紧张jǐn zhāngextremely极了jí le。

Saya sangat gugup pada hari ujian gaokao.

    that那个nà geboy男孩nán háiannoying讨厌tǎo yànextremely极了jí le!

    Anak laki-laki itu benar-benar menggemari!

Ingatlah: 极 = kutub, titik terjauh (北极 = North Pole). 好极了 mendorong "baik" seluruh jalan menuju kutub — dan 极 tidak pernah bepergian tanpa 了-nya.

    Hati-hati

    • 了 adalah mutlak: 好极了 ✓, tidak pernah 好极.
    • Tanpa 得 — ia melekat telanjang (好极了), berbeda dengan pelengkap derajat lainnya (好得很).
    • 极了 sudah membawa penekanan, jadi jangan tumpuk dengan 很 atau 非常: 好极了, tidak pernah 很好极了.
    1.2

Pengulangan Adjektiva — menggandakan adjektiva untuk kehangatan (AA / AABB)

    English

Repeat an adjective and it turns soft, warm, and vivid — less a cold fact, more a fond little picture. This doubling runs all through friendly, natural Chinese, especially for physical descriptions: colours, sizes, shapes.

A one-syllable adjective doubles as AA, usually with 的 before the noun — 大 ("big") → 大大的 ("nice and big, big and round"):

    Structure: A + A + 的 (+ Noun)

the baby宝宝bǎo bao的deeyes眼睛yǎn jīngbig and round大大的dà dà de。

The baby has big, round eyes.

tonight今晚jīn wǎn的demoon月亮yuè liàngnice and round圆圆的yuán yuán de。

The moon is lovely and round tonight.

A two-syllable adjective doubles as AABB — repeat each character, not the whole word: 高兴 → 高高兴兴, 干净 → 干干净净, 舒服 → 舒舒服服. Used as an adverb, the AABB form takes 地 before the verb:

I我wǒwant to想xiǎngcomfortably舒舒服服shū shū fú fú地delie躺tǎngon在zàithe sofa沙发上shā fā shàng。

I just want to lie comfortably on the sofa.

Remember: doubling softens and warms — 大大的眼睛 isn't a flat "big eyes," it's the affectionate "lovely big eyes" a parent would coo. AA + 的 paints a noun; AABB + 地 colours a verb.

    Watch out

    • Not every adjective doubles — 好吃, 便宜, 麻烦 are never said as 好好吃吃 / 便便宜宜. Stick to common physical descriptors until you've heard a form used for real.
    • A doubled adjective is already emphatic — never put 很 in front (很慢慢 is wrong).
    Bahasa Indonesia

Ulangi sebuah adjektiva dan ia berubah menjadi lembut, hangat, dan hidup — kurang fakta dingin, lebih seperti gambar kecil penuh kasih sayang. Pengulangan ini berjalan di seluruh bahasa Mandarin yang ramah dan alami, terutama untuk deskripsi fisik: warna, ukuran, bentuk.

Adjektiva satu suku kata digandakan menjadi AA, biasanya dengan 的 sebelum noun — 大 ("besar") → 大大的 ("besarnya pas, besar dan bulat"):

    Struktur: A + A + 的 (+ Noun)

the baby宝宝bǎo bao的deeyes眼睛yǎn jīngbig and round大大的dà dà de。

Bayi itu memiliki mata yang besar dan bulat.

tonight今晚jīn wǎn的demoon月亮yuè liàngnice and round圆圆的yuán yuán de。

Bulan itu cantik dan bulat malam ini.

Adjektiva dua suku kata digandakan menjadi AABB — ulangi setiap karakter, bukan seluruh kata: 高兴 → 高高兴兴, 干净 → 干干净净, 舒服 → 舒舒服服. Digunakan sebagai adverb, bentuk AABB mengambil 地 sebelum kata kerja:

I我wǒwant to想xiǎngcomfortably舒舒服服shū shū fú fú地delie躺tǎngon在zàithe sofa沙发上shā fā shàng。

Saya hanya ingin berbaring dengan nyaman di sofa.

Ingat: penggandaan memperhalus dan menghangatkan — 大大的眼睛 isn't a flat "big eyes," it's the affectionate "lovely big eyes" a parent would coo. AA + 的 paints a noun; AABB + 地 colours a verb.

    Hati-hati

    • Tidak setiap kata sifat diduplikasi — 好吃, 便宜, 麻烦 are never said as 好好吃吃 / 便便宜宜. Stick to common physical descriptors until you've heard a form used for real.
    • Kata sifat yang diduplikasi sudah bersifat penekanan — jangan pernah meletakkan 很 di depannya (很慢慢 is wrong).
    1.3

    形容词 + 地 + 动词 — mengubah kata sifat menjadi "-ly" (地)

    English

To say how an action is done, park the particle 地 (de) after an adjective — it is Chinese's "-ly." 高兴 ("happy") → 高兴地 ("happily"); 认真 ("careful") → 认真地 ("carefully"). The adverb always sits in front of the verb.

    Structure: Adjective + 地 + Verb Literally: "happy-ly — smiled."

    he他tāhappy高兴gāo xìng地desmiled笑xiào了le。

    He smiled happily.

the teacher老师lǎo shīcareful认真rèn zhēn地deread看kàn了lemy我的wǒ deessay作文zuò wén。

The teacher read my essay carefully.

Remember: 地 = "-ly". Three de's sound identical but split the work: 的 owns a noun (我的书), 地 drives a verb (慢慢地走), 得 rates the result (跑得快). The 地 here even carries 土 "earth" on its left — picture an adverb grounding how the verb is done.

    Watch out

    • This 地 is read de, not dì — same sound as 的 and 得, different job.
    • The adverb phrase comes before the verb, never after it.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Untuk mengatakan bagaimana suatu tindakan dilakukan, letakkan partikel 地 (de) setelah kata sifat — ini adalah "-ly" dari bahasa Mandarin. 高兴 ("happy") → 高兴地 ("happily"); 认真 ("careful") → 认真地 ("carefully"). Adverbia selalu berada di depan kata kerja.

    Struktur: Adjective + 地 + Verb Secara harfiah: "happy-ly — tersenyum."

    he他tāhappy高兴gāo xìng地desmiled笑xiào了le。

    Ia tersenyum dengan gembira.

the teacher老师lǎo shīcareful认真rèn zhēn地deread看kàn了lemy我的wǒ deessay作文zuò wén。

Guru membaca esai saya dengan saksama.

Ingat: 地 = "-ly". Tiga de's terdengar identik tetapi membagi tugas: 的 memilikisubstantif (我的书), 地 menggerakkan kata kerja (慢慢地走), 得 menilai hasil (跑得快). The 地 here even carries 土 "earth" on its left — picture an adverb grounding how the verb is done.

    Hati-hati

    • This 地 is read de, not dì — same sound as 的 and 得, different job.
    • Frasa adverbia datang sebelum kata kerja, tidak pernah sesudahnya.

    又 + 动词 + 了 — "(melakukannya) lagi" (di masa lalu)

    English

Something already happened one more time? Reach for 又 (yòu) — "again, once more." It looks backward at a repeat that's done, and it often carries a flick of annoyance, like English "again?!" (For "again" in the future, you want 再 instead — see the contrast below.)

    Structure: (Subject +) 又 + Verb + 了 Literally: "again — [verb] — (and it's happened)."

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    You're late again.

    again又yòurain下雨xià yǔ了le!

    It's raining again!

    today今天jīn tiānagain又yòuhave to要yàowork overtime加班jiā bān了le!

We've got to work overtime again today!

Remember: 又 looks back, 再 looks forward. 又来了 = "here we go again" (it happened); 再来一次 = "do it once more" (it will). Future 再 takes no 了; past 又 needs it.

    Watch out

    • 又 also works with negatives: 他又没来 ("he didn't come again").
    • For something about to repeat, pair it with 要: 又要…了 ("here it comes again").
    Bahasa Indonesia

Sesuatu sudah terjadi sekali lagi? Gunakan 又 (yòu) — "lagi, sekali lagi." It looks backward at a repeat that's done, and it often carries a flick of annoyance, like English "again?!" (For "again" in the future, you want 再 instead — see the contrast below.)

Struktur: (Subject +) 又 + Verb + 了 Secara harfiah: "lagi — [kata kerja] — (dan itu telah terjadi)."

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    Kamu terlambat lagi.

    again又yòurain下雨xià yǔ了le!

    Hujan turun lagi!

    today今天jīn tiānagain又yòuhave to要yàowork overtime加班jiā bān了le!

Hari ini kita harus lembur lagi!

Ingat: 又 melihat ke belakang, 再 melihat ke depan. 又来了 = "here we go again" (it happened); 再来一次 = "do it once more" (it will). Future 再 takes no 了; past 又 needs it.

    Hati-hati

    • 又 juga bekerja dengan negatif: 他又没来 ("he didn't come again").
    • Untuk sesuatu yang akan berulang, padankan dengan 要: 又要…了 ("here it comes again").
    2.2

    一直 — "selama ini, terus-menerus"

    English

一直 is literally "one straight (line)" — picture a single, unbroken line drawn through time. It describes an action or state that runs non-stop over a stretch — "continuously, the whole time, all along." English often lands it as "always."

Structure: Subject + 一直 + Predicate Literally: "in one straight line, [predicate]."

    I我wǒall along一直yì zhívery很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanyou你nǐ。

    I've liked you all along.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnalways一直yì zhívery很hěnbusy忙máng。

    The boss is always busy.

eighteen十八岁shí bā suìafter以后yǐ hòuhe,他tāhas … ever since一直yì zhíalone一个人yí ge rénlived住zhù。

Since he was eighteen, he's lived alone the whole time.

Remember: 一直 = one straight line through time — no breaks. It's unbroken duration; for a repeating habit ("always does X"), switch to 总是.

    Watch out

    • It often pairs with 在 (一直在学习) or 都 (一直都不抽烟).
    • 一直走 also means "go straight ahead" — the same "straight line" idea, in space.
    Bahasa Indonesia

一直 secara harfiah adalah "satu garis lurus" — bayangkan satu garis tunggal yang tak terputus melalui waktu. It describes an action or state that runs non-stop over a stretch — "continuously, the whole time, all along." English often lands it as "always."

Struktur: Subject + 一直 + Predicate Secara harfiah: "dalam satu garis lurus, [predikat]."

    I我wǒall along一直yì zhívery很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanyou你nǐ。

    Saya menyukaimu selama ini.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnalways一直yì zhívery很hěnbusy忙máng。

    Bos selalu sibuk.

eighteen十八岁shí bā suìafter以后yǐ hòuhe,他tāhas … ever since一直yì zhíalone一个人yí ge rénlived住zhù。

Sejak berusia delapan belas tahun, ia telah tinggal sendirian sepanjang waktu.

Ingat: 一直 = satu garis lurus melalui waktu — tanpa jeda. It's unbroken duration; for a repeating habit ("always does X"), switch to 总是.

    Hati-hati

    • It often pairs with 在 (一直在学习) or 都 (一直都不抽烟).
    • 一直走 also means "go straight ahead" — the same "straight line" idea, in space.
    2.3

    总是 — "selalu" (kebiasaan)

    English

总是 is "always" in the sense of a habit or consistent pattern — something that just keeps recurring. 总 means "all in all, in every case," so 总是 says "in every case, it's like this." It's neutral in tone and sits before the verb.

    Structure: Subject + 总是 + Verb · with an adjective: 总是 + 很 / 特别 + Adj

    he他tāalways总是zǒng shìlate迟到chí dào。

    He's always late.

    your你nǐhome家jiāalways总是zǒng shìvery很hěnclean干净gān jìng。

Your home is always so clean.

Remember: 总 = "in every case." 总是 is the neutral "always" (a pattern); its grumbling twin 老是 (below) adds the eye-roll.

    Watch out

    • Before an adjective you must add a degree word: 总是很累 ✓, not 总是累.
    • 总是 = a recurring habit; 一直 = one unbroken stretch. "He's always late" (each time) is 总是; "it rained the whole time" is 一直.
    Bahasa Indonesia

总是 adalah "selalu" dalam arti kebiasaan atau pola konsisten — sesuatu yang terus berulang. 总 berarti "semua secara keseluruhan, dalam setiap kasus," sehingga 总是 menyatakan "dalam setiap kasus, situasinya seperti ini." Its tone is neutral and sits before the verb.

    Struktur: Subject + 总是 + Verb · dengan kata sifat: 总是 + 很 / 特别 + Adj

    he他tāalways总是zǒng shìlate迟到chí dào。

    Ia selalu terlambat.

    your你nǐhome家jiāalways总是zǒng shìvery很hěnclean干净gān jìng。

    Rumahmu selalu sangat bersih.

Ingat: 总 = "dalam setiap kasus." 总是 adalah "selalu" yang netral (pola); kembar yang menggerutu 老是 (di bawah) menambahkan ekspresi mata tertunduk.

    Hati-hati

    • Sebelum kata sifat Anda harus menambahkan kata derajat: 总是很累 ✓, not 总是累.
    • 总是 = kebiasaan yang berulang; 一直 = satu rentang tak terputus. "He's always late" (setiap kali) adalah 总是; "it rained the whole time" adalah 一直.
    2.4

    终于 — "akhirnya, pada akhirnya"

    English

终于 marks something finally happening after a long wait — and it glows with relief or joy. 终 is "the end / finish line" (the 终 of 终点), so 终于 is "at the finish line, it came." Unlike English "finally," it can't stand alone, move to the front, or end a sentence — and it must team up with 了.

    Structure: Subject + 终于 + Predicate + 了

    you你nǐfinally终于zhōng yúarrived到dào了le!

    You're finally here!

    the homework作业zuò yèfinally终于zhōng yúdone做zuòfinished完wán了le!

    I've finally finished the homework!

Remember: 终 = the finish line you've been straining toward — 终于 is the sigh of relief as you cross it, always sealed with 了.

    Watch out

    • The 了 is obligatory — 终于…了; never 终于 bare like English "finally" on its own.
    • It implies a welcome outcome. For a flat, neutral "in the end," use 最后.
    Bahasa Indonesia

终于 menandai sesuatu akhirnya terjadi setelah menunggu lama — dan bersinar dengan rasa lega atau kegembiraan. 终 adalah "akhir / garis finis" (the 终 of 终点), so 终于 adalah "di garis finis, hal itu tiba." Unlike English "finally," it can't stand alone, move to the front, or end a sentence — and it must team up with 了.

    Struktur: Subject + 终于 + Predicate + 了

    you你nǐfinally终于zhōng yúarrived到dào了le!

    Akhirnya kamu sampai di sini!

    the homework作业zuò yèfinally终于zhōng yúdone做zuòfinished完wán了le!

    Aku akhirnya menyelesaikan PR!

Ingat: 终 = garis finis yang terus kamu kejar — 终于 adalah tarikan napas lega saat melintasinya, selalu ditutup dengan 了.

    Hati-hati

    • The 了 is obligatory — 终于…了; never 终于 bare like English "finally" on its own.
    • It implies a welcome outcome. For a flat, neutral "in the end," use 最后.
    2.5

    几乎 — "hampir, nyaris"

    English

几乎 means "nearly, almost" — it gets you right up to the line without quite crossing it. It loves company: it very often teams up with an "all" word (每, 所有, 全 … 都) or a "none" word (没有, 不).

    Structure: 几乎 + 每 / 所有 … 都 … · Subject + 几乎 + [不 / 没] + Predicate

almost几乎jī hūeveryone每个人měi ge rénall都dōuhas有yǒua phone手机shǒu jī。

    Almost everyone has a phone.

    almost几乎jī hūno没有méi yǒuone人rénbelieves相信xiāng xìnhim他tā。

    Almost no one believes him.

    my我wǒboss老板lǎo bǎnhardly几乎jī hūever不bùdrinks喝酒hē jiǔ。

    My boss hardly ever drinks.

Remember: think of 几乎 as a needle stopping just short of the mark. 几乎 + 都 → "almost all"; 几乎 + 没有 → "almost none"; 几乎不 / 几乎没 → "hardly ever."

    Watch out

    • It points to one extreme (all or none) — pair it with a 都 / 没有 / 不 to land the meaning.
    Bahasa Indonesia

几乎 berarti "hampir, nyaris" — membawa Anda tepat hingga garis tanpa benar-benar melewatinya. It loves company: it very often teams up with an "all" word (每, 所有, 全 … 都) or a "none" word (没有, 不).

    Struktur: 几乎 + 每 / 所有 … 都 … · Subject + 几乎 + [不 / 没] + Predicate

almost几乎jī hūeveryone每个人měi ge rénall都dōuhas有yǒua phone手机shǒu jī。

    Hampir semua orang punya telepon.

    almost几乎jī hūno没有méi yǒuone人rénbelieves相信xiāng xìnhim他tā。

Hampir tidak ada yang percaya dia.

    my我wǒboss老板lǎo bǎnhardly几乎jī hūever不bùdrinks喝酒hē jiǔ。

Bos saya hampir tidak pernah minum.

Ingat: think of 几乎 as a needle stopping just short of the mark. 几乎 + 都 → "almost all"; 几乎 + 没有 → "almost none"; 几乎不 / 几乎没 → "hardly ever."

    Hati-hati

    • It points to one extreme (all or none) — pair it with a 都 / 没有 / 不 to land the meaning.
    2.6

    只 — "hanya"

    English

只 (zhǐ) is the everyday word for "only." It's an adverb, so it clings to the verb (or an auxiliary like 会 / 能) — never to the noun the way English "only" floats around.

    Structure: 只 + Verb · 只 + 会 / 能 + Verb

    I我wǒonly只zhǐhave有yǒuone一个yí geolder brother哥哥gē ge。

I only have one older brother.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐwant想xiǎngto be with跟gēnyou你nǐtogether在一起zài yì qǐ。

I only want to be with you.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐcan能néngsay说shuōtwo两liǎngsentences句jùChinese中文Zhōng wén。

I can only say a couple of sentences in Chinese.

Remember: 只 sits on the verb: 我只有一个 ("I only have one"), never 我有只一个. English "only" wanders; Chinese 只 stays glued to the verb.

    Watch out

    • 只 (zhǐ, "only") is written the same as 只 (zhī), the measure word for animals (一只猫) — same character, two readings and jobs.
    Bahasa Indonesia

只 (zhǐ) adalah kata sehari-hari untuk "hanya." Ini adalah kata keterangan, sehingga menempel pada kata kerja (atau kata bantu seperti 会 / 能) — tidak pernah pada kata benda seperti cara "only" dalam bahasa Inggris yang bergerak bebas.

    Struktur: 只 + Verb · 只 + 会 / 能 + Verb

    I我wǒonly只zhǐhave有yǒuone一个yí geolder brother哥哥gē ge。

Saya hanya memiliki satu kakak laki-laki.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐwant想xiǎngto be with跟gēnyou你nǐtogether在一起zài yì qǐ。

    Saya hanya ingin bersama kamu.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐcan能néngsay说shuōtwo两liǎngsentences句jùChinese中文Zhōng wén。

    2.7

Durasi + 没 + Kata Kerja + 了 — berapa lama Anda *tidak* melakukan sesuatu

    English

Here's a word order that trips up English speakers. To say how long you have NOT done something, the duration jumps in front of the verb: time + 没 + verb + 了. Compare the normal "did it for ten years" (verb first), and you'll see the mirror image.

    Structure: Subject + (已经 +) Duration + 没 + Verb + 了

    we我们wǒ menalready已经yǐ jīngten years十年shí niánhaven't没méimet见jiàn了le。

We haven't seen each other for ten years now.

he他tāa week一个星期yí ge xīng qīhasn't没méishowered洗澡xǐ zǎo了le。

He hasn't showered in a week.

    you你nǐhow long多久duō jiǔhaven't没méibeen home回家huí jiā了le?

How long has it been since you went home?

Remember: "have done" puts time after the verb; "haven't done" puts time before it. 看了十年 = "watched for ten years"; 十年没看了 = "haven't watched in ten years." The 了 here means "and counting."

    Watch out

    • Chinese avoids "since [a time point]." Say a duration instead (三年没…了), or 上次…是… ("the last time was…").
    Bahasa Indonesia

Berikut adalah susunan kata yang sering membingungkan penutur bahasa Inggris. Untuk mengatakan berapa lama Anda TIDAK melakukan sesuatu, durasi melompat ke depan kata kerja: time + 没 + verb + 了. Bandingkan dengan "melakukannya selama sepuluh tahun" normal (kata kerja di depan), dan Anda akan melihat cerminnya.

    Struktur: Subject + (已经 +) Duration + 没 + Verb + 了

    we我们wǒ menalready已经yǐ jīngten years十年shí niánhaven't没méimet见jiàn了le。

Kami belum bertemu selama sepuluh tahun sekarang.

he他tāa week一个星期yí ge xīng qīhasn't没méishowered洗澡xǐ zǎo了le。

    Dia belum mandi selama seminggu.

    you你nǐhow long多久duō jiǔhaven't没méibeen home回家huí jiā了le?

Berapa lama sejak kamu pulang ke rumah?

Ingat: "telah dilakukan" menempatkan waktu setelah kata kerja; "belum dilakukan" menempatkan waktu di depannya. 看了十年 = "menonton selama sepuluh tahun"; 十年没看了 = "belum menonton selama sepuluh tahun." 了 di sini berarti "dan terus berlanjut.""

    Hati-hati

    • Bahasa Tionghoa menghindari "sejak [titik waktu]". Sebutkan durasi sebagai gantinya (三年没…了), atau 上次…是… ("kali terakhir adalah …").
    2.8

    Waktu + 才 + Kata Kerja — "baru" (keterlambatan)

    English

才 (cái) drags an action later than expected — "not until, as late as." If 就 says "already, sooner than you'd think," 才 is its grumpy opposite: "only then, finally, took its time."

    Structure: Subject + Time + 才 + Verb

I我wǒyesterday昨天zuó tiāneleven o'clock十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáigot home到家dào jiā。

I didn't get home until eleven last night.

he他tātwenty-five二十五岁èr shí wǔ suìnot until才cáistarted上shànguniversity大学dà xué。

He didn't start university until he was twenty-five.

Remember: 才 = late / barely (就 = early / already). And 才 takes no 了 — the lateness is the point, not a completed result: 四十岁才结婚 ✓, never 才结婚了.

    Watch out

    • Same character does double duty: before a time it means "late" (this point); before a number it means "only a little" (point 2.12 below).
    Bahasa Indonesia

才 (cái) menunda suatu tindakan lebih lambat dari yang diharapkan — "baru, bahkan terlambat." Jika 就 berarti "sudah, lebih cepat dari yang Anda kira," 才 adalah kebalikannya yang kesal: "baru saja, akhirnya, butuh waktu lama.",

    Struktur: Subject + Time + 才 + Verb

I我wǒyesterday昨天zuó tiāneleven o'clock十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáigot home到家dào jiā。

Saya baru sampai rumah jam sebelas malam kemarin.

he他tātwenty-five二十五岁èr shí wǔ suìnot until才cáistarted上shànguniversity大学dà xué。

Dia baru mulai kuliah saat berusia dua puluh lima tahun.

Ingat: 才 = terlambat / hampir (就 = awal / sudah). Dan 才 mengambil tanpa 了 — keterlambatan adalah poin utamanya, bukan hasil yang selesai: 四十岁才结婚 ✓, bukan 才结婚了.

    Hati-hati

    • Karakter yang sama memiliki fungsi ganda: sebelum waktu berarti "terlambat" (titik ini); sebelum angka berarti "hanya sedikit" (poin 2.12 di bawah).
    2.9

    先 … ,再 … — "pertama …, lalu …"

    English

To line events up in order, frame them with 先 … 再 … — "first …, (and) then …." The trap: here 再 means "then / next," not its usual "again."

    Structure: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃chī。

Wash your hands first, then eat.

Do your homework first, then watch TV.

Remember: in 先…再…, 再 is the "and then" of a sequence, not "again." Picture two stepping stones: step on 先 first, then 再.

    Watch out

    • 先…再说 means "do X first, then we'll see" — a "deal with it later" feeling: 先吃饭再说.
    • Chain longer sequences with 然后 ("and then") and 接着 ("next").
    Bahasa Indonesia

Untuk menyusun peristiwa secara berurutan, bingkai dengan 先 … 再 … — "pertama …, (dan) kemudian …." Jebakan: di sini 再 berarti "lalu / selanjutnya," bukan "lagi."

一边 … 一边 … — melakukan dua hal sekaligus

    English

Two deliberate actions happening at the same time? Frame both with 一边 … 一边 … — "(do X) while (doing Y)." 边 means "side," so it's literally "on one side … on the other side …" — two tracks running together.

    Structure: Subject + 一边 + Verb 1 (,) 一边 + Verb 2

I我wǒoften常常cháng chángwhile一边yì biānshowering洗澡xǐ zǎo,一边yì biānsing唱歌chàng gē。

I often sing in the shower.

    don't别biéwhile一边yì biāndriving开车kāi chē,一边yì biānmake calls打电话dǎ diàn huà。

    Don't make calls while driving.

Remember: 边 = "side" — one action on each side, at once. Casually it shrinks to 边…边… (边走边聊, "chatting as we walk").

    Watch out

    • Both actions must be intentional; for "while X was going on," use …的时候.
    • The main action is usually the second one in Chinese (English often flips the order).
    Bahasa Indonesia

Dua tindakan disengaja terjadi pada waktu yang sama? Bingkai keduanya dengan 一边 … 一边 … — "(lakukan X) sambil (melakukan Y)." 边 berarti "sisi", jadi secara harfiah "di satu sisi … di sisi lain …" — dua jalur berjalan bersamaan.

    Struktur: Subject + 一边 + Verb 1 (,) 一边 + Verb 2

I我wǒoften常常cháng chángwhile一边yì biānshowering洗澡xǐ zǎo,一边yì biānsing唱歌chàng gē。

Saya sering bernyanyi di kamar mandi.

    don't别biéwhile一边yì biāndriving开车kāi chē,一边yì biānmake calls打电话dǎ diàn huà。

    Jangan menelepon saat sedang berkendara.

Ingat: 边 = "sisi" — satu tindakan di setiap sisi, sekaligus. Secara kasual menyingkat menjadi 边…边… (边走边聊, "mengobrol sambil berjalan").

    Hati-hati

    • Kedua tindakan harus disengaji; untuk "sambil X sedang berlangsung," gunakan …的时候.
    • Tindakan utama biasanya adalah yang kedua dalam bahasa Tionghoa (bahasa Inggris sering membalik urutannya).
    2.11

    老是 — "selalu" (keluhan)

    English

老是 (or just 老) also means "always" — but it's the grumbling version, loaded with frustration, like "you're always on your phone." Swap it in for 总是 anywhere you want to add an eye-roll.

    Structure: Subject + 老(是) + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy怎么zěn mealways老是lǎo shìlate迟到chí dào?

    Why are you always late?

    this这个zhè gemachine机器jī qìalways老是lǎo shìhaving出chūtrouble问题wèn tí。

This machine is always breaking down.

Remember: 总是 is neutral; 老是 complains. If you could add "ugh" to the English, use 老是.

    Watch out

    • It's a complaint — don't use it for something good (use 总是 there).
    • Before an adjective, add 不 / 很 / 这么: 老是不高兴.
    Bahasa Indonesia

老是 (atau sekadar 老) juga berarti "selalu" — tetapi ini versi mengeluh, penuh frustrasi, seperti "kamu selalu main HP." Ganti dengan 总是 di mana pun Anda ingin menambahkan mata terbelalak.

    Struktur: Subject + 老(是) + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy怎么zěn mealways老是lǎo shìlate迟到chí dào?

    Kenapa kamu selalu terlambat?

    this这个zhè gemachine机器jī qìalways老是lǎo shìhaving出chūtrouble问题wèn tí。

    Mesin ini selalu rusak.

Ingat: 总是 netral; 老是 mengeluh. Jika Anda bisa menambahkan "ugh" ke dalam bahasa Inggris, gunakan 老是.

    Hati-hati

    • Ini adalah keluhan — jangan gunakan untuk sesuatu yang baik (gunakan 总是 di sana).
    • Sebelum kata sifat, tambahkan 不 / 很 / 这么: 老是不高兴.

    才 + Angka — "hanya" (jumlah kecil)

    English

A second job for 才 (cái): drop it before a number and it stresses the amount is smaller than you'd expect — "only, just, a mere." Where the "lateness" 才 says "late," this one says "barely that much."

    Structure: 才 + Number + Measure Word + Noun · 才 + Verb + Number + MW + Noun

    you你nǐonly才cáitwenty二十岁èr shí suì?

    You're only twenty?

this这家zhè jiāshop店diànonly才cáibeen open开业kāi yèone一个yí geweek星期xīng qī。

This shop has only been open a week.

they他们tā menonly才cáiknown each other认识rèn shithree months三个月sān ge yuè!

They've only known each other three months!

Remember: one 才, two jobs — before a time it drags things late (2.8); before a number it shrinks the amount to only that much. Both share the feeling "less than expected."

    Watch out

    • After 才 + verb, the 了 is optional: 才来了两个月 ≈ 才来两个月.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Tugas kedua untuk 才 (cái): letakkan sebelum angka dan ia menekankan jumlah tersebut lebih kecil dari yang Anda perkiraikan — "hanya, sekadar, semata." Di mana "keterlambatan" 才 mengatakan "terlambat," yang ini mengatakan "hanya sejumlah itu.""

    Struktur: 才 + Number + Measure Word + Noun · 才 + Verb + Number + MW + Noun

    you你nǐonly才cáitwenty二十岁èr shí suì?

    Kamu hanya berusia dua puluh?

Mereka hanya saling kenal tiga bulan!

Ingat: satu 才, dua tugas — sebelum waktu menunda hal-hal terlambat (2.8); sebelum angka mengecilkan jumlah menjadi hanya sejumlah itu. Keduanya berbagi perasaan "kurang dari yang diharapkan.""

    Hati-hati

    • Setelah 才 + kata kerja, 了 opsional: 才来了两个月 ≈ 才来两个月.
  • 3 Adverbs with Adjectives · ⁨Kata keterangan dengan Kata sifat⁩
    3.1

    这么 / 那么 + Kata Sifat — "begitu …, ini / itu …"

    English

Put 这么 or 那么 in front of an adjective to dial its degree up — English "so, this much, that much." The split mirrors English this vs that: 这么 points to something near or happening right now ("this cold"); 那么 points to something further off or already mentioned ("that clever").

Structure: Subject + 这么 / 那么 + Adjective

    today今天jīn tiānhow come怎么zěn meso这么zhè mecold冷lěng?

Why is it so cold today?

you你nǐso那么nà meclever聪明cōng mingsurely,一定yí dìngcan能néngguess it猜到cāi dào。

You're so clever — you'll definitely guess it.

Remember: 这 = here / now, 那 = there / then; the 么 turns "this/that" into "this much / that much." Same split as English this/that.

    Watch out

    • Both translate as "so," but keep the near/far feel: 这么 for what's in front of you, 那么 for what's removed.
    • Very common after 怎么 for a surprised "how come it's so …?": 怎么这么贵.
    Bahasa Indonesia

    today今天jīn tiānhow come怎么zěn meso这么zhè mecold冷lěng?

    Kenapa hari ini begitu dingin?

you你nǐso那么nà meclever聪明cōng mingsurely,一定yí dìngcan能néngguess it猜到cāi dào。

Kamu begitu cerdas — kamu pasti bisa menebaknya.

Ingat: 这 = sini / sekarang, 那 = situ / lalu; 么 mengubah "ini/itu" menjadi "begitu banyak / begitu banyak." Pemisahan yang sama seperti bahasa Inggris this/that.

    Hati-hati

    • Keduanya diterjemahkan sebagai "begitu," tetapi pertahankan nuansa dekat/jauh: 这么 untuk apa yang ada di depan Anda, 那么 untuk apa yang jauh.
    • Sangat umum setelah 怎么 untuk kaget "kenapa begitu …?": 怎么这么贵.
    3.2

    A + 跟 / 和 + B + 一样 — "sama dengan, seseperti …"

    English

To say two things are alike, link them with 跟 (or 和) and 一样 — literally "one same (shape)." Add an adjective on the end and you get "equally …, as … as."

    Structure: Noun 1 + 跟 / 和 + Noun 2 + 一样 (+ Adjective)

your home你家nǐ jiāas跟gēnmy home我家wǒ jiāthe same一样yí yàngbig大dà。

Your place is just as big as mine.

Beijing北京Běi jīng的deweather天气tiān qìand和héShanghai上海Shàng hǎinot不bùthe same一样yí yàng。

    Beijing's weather isn't the same as Shanghai's.

Remember: 一样 = "one-same" — cut from the same cloth. The adjective rides after 一样 (一样大 = "equally big"), and 不 to negate goes before it (不一样).

    Watch out

    • Word order traps English speakers: it's …一样大, never 大一样.
    • 跟 and 和 are interchangeable here; 跟 is more spoken, 和 a touch more neutral.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Untuk mengatakan dua hal sama, hubungkan dengan 跟 (atau 和) dan 一样 — secara harfiah "satu bentuk yang sama." Tambahkan kata sifat di akhir untuk mendapatkan "setara …, sama … dengan."

    Struktur: Noun 1 + 跟 / 和 + Noun 2 + 一样 (+ Adjective)

your home你家nǐ jiāas跟gēnmy home我家wǒ jiāthe same一样yí yàngbig大dà。

    Tempatmu sama besarnya dengan tempatku.

Beijing北京Běi jīng的deweather天气tiān qìand和héShanghai上海Shàng hǎinot不bùthe same一样yí yàng。

Cuaca Beijing tidak sama dengan Shanghai.

Ingatlah: 一样 = "satu-sama" — dipotong dari kain yang sama. Kata sifat berada setelah 一样 (一样大 = "sama besarnya"), dan 不 untuk menegasikan berada sebelumnya (不一样).

    Hati-hati

    • Perangkap urutan kata bagi penutur bahasa Inggris: urutannya adalah …一样大, bukan 大一样.
    • 跟 dan 和 dapat saling menggantikan di sini; 跟 lebih常用于 percakapan, sedangkan 和 sedikit lebih netral.
    3.3

    又 … 又 … — "keduanya … dan …"

    English

The frame 又 … 又 … stacks two qualities that hold at the same time — "both … and …." The one rule: the two adjectives must share the same feeling — both positive, or both negative. Mixing a plus and a minus jars the Chinese ear.

    Structure: Subject + 又 + Adjective 1 + 又 + Adjective 2

    this这个zhè gehouse房子fáng ziboth又yòubig大dàand又yòubright亮liàng。

This house is both big and bright.

    here这里zhè lǐ的decoffee咖啡kā fēiboth又yòuexpensive贵guìand又yòubad-tasting难喝nán hē。

The coffee here is both pricey and nasty.

Remember: both 又's must point the same way — 又便宜又好 (both plus ✓), 又贵又难喝 (both minus ✓), but not 又贵又好 (mixed ✗).

    Watch out

    • For two simultaneous actions rather than qualities, use 一边…一边… instead.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Pola 又 … 又 … menggabungkan dua kualitas yang berlaku secara bersamaan — "keduanya … dan …". Satu aturan utama: kedua kata sifat harus memiliki nuansa yang sama — keduanya positif, atau keduanya negatif. Mencampur satu plus dan satu minus akan terdengar janggal bagi telinga orang Tiongkok.

    Struktur: Subject + 又 + Adjective 1 + 又 + Adjective 2

    this这个zhè gehouse房子fáng ziboth又yòubig大dàand又yòubright亮liàng。

    Rumah ini besar sekaligus terang.

    here这里zhè lǐ的decoffee咖啡kā fēiboth又yòuexpensive贵guìand又yòubad-tasting难喝nán hē。

Kopi di sini mahal sekaligus pahit.

Ingatlah: kedua kata 又 harus menuju arah yang sama — 又便宜又好 (keduanya plus ✓), 又贵又难喝 (keduanya minus ✓), tetapi bukan 又贵又好 (campuran ✗).

    Hati-hati

    • Untuk dua tindakan yang terjadi bersamaan alih-alih kualitas, gunakan 一边…一边… sebagai gantinya.
    3.4

比较 + kata sifat — "cukup, cukup-kurang, relatif"

    English

比较 literally means "to compare," and as an adverb it means "fairly, rather, comparatively." It's a gentle hedge — softer and less absolute than 很 or 非常 — and it quietly implies "more so than the rest," even when nothing else is named.

Structure: Subject + 比较 + Adjective (also 比较 + feeling-verb)

    this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tífairly比较bǐ jiàosimple简单jiǎn dān。

    This question is fairly simple.

    I我wǒrather比较bǐ jiàoprefer喜欢xǐ huantaking坐zuòthe subway地铁dì tiě。

I rather prefer taking the subway.

Remember: 比较 has "compare" (比) baked in — it always whispers "relatively, compared to the alternatives." Use it to sound measured, not gushing.

    Watch out

    • Works with feeling-verbs too: 比较喜欢, 比较讨厌.
    Bahasa Indonesia

比较 secara harfiah berarti "membandingkan," dan sebagai kata keterangan artinya "cukup, cukup-kurang, komparatif." Ini adalah penyaring lembut — lebih halus dan kurang absolut daripada 很 atau 非常 — dan diam-diam menyiratkan "lebih banyak dibandingkan sisanya," bahkan ketika tidak ada yang lain disebutkan.

Struktur: Subject + 比较 + Adjective (juga 比较 + feeling-verb)

    this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tífairly比较bǐ jiàosimple简单jiǎn dān。

    Soal ini cukup sederhana.

    I我wǒrather比较bǐ jiàoprefer喜欢xǐ huantaking坐zuòthe subway地铁dì tiě。

Saya lebih memilih naik kereta bawah tanah.

Ingatlah: 比较 sudah mengandung "bandingkan" (比) di dalamnya — ia selalu berbisik "relatif, dibandingkan dengan alternatif lainnya." Gunakan agar terdengar terukur, bukan berlebihan.

    Hati-hati

    • Bekerja juga dengan kata kerja perasaan: 比较喜欢, 比较讨厌.
    3.5

    多 + kata sifat — "betapa …!" (seruan)

    English

In an exclamation, 多 (or 多么) before an adjective means "how …!, so …!" — a quick, emotional burst of admiration or complaint. It usually closes with 啊.

    Structure: Subject + 多 + Adjective + 啊!

    your你nǐdaughter女儿nǚ érhow多duōclever聪明cōng ming啊a!

    How clever your daughter is!

    on your own一个人yí ge rénhow多duōnice好hǎo!

How nice it is to have the place to yourself!

Remember: the same 多 that asks about degree — 你多大?("how old?") — also exclaims it: 多大啊!("how big!"). The 啊 and the "!" are the tell.

    Watch out

    • It's an exclamation — pair it with 啊 and a "!".
    Bahasa Indonesia

Dalam seruan, 多 (atau 多么) sebelum kata sifat berarti "betapa …!, sangat …!" — ledakan emosional cepat berupa pujian atau keluh kesah. Biasanya diakhiri dengan 啊.

    Struktur: Subject + 多 + Adjective + 啊!

    your你nǐdaughter女儿nǚ érhow多duōclever聪明cōng ming啊a!

    Betapa cerdik putrimu!

    on your own一个人yí ge rénhow多duōnice好hǎo!

Betapa indahnya memiliki tempat ini untuk diri sendiri!

Ingatlah: kata 多 yang sama yang bertanya tentang tingkat — 你多大?("berapa umurnya?") — juga menyerukannya: 多大啊!("betapa besarnya!"). Tanda pengenalnya adalah 啊 dan tanda "!".

    Hati-hati

    • Ini adalah seruan — pasangkan dengan 啊 dan tanda "!".
    3.6

kata sifat + 的 + kata benda — mendeskripsikan kata benda

    English

To stick an adjective in front of a noun, glue them together with 的 — Chinese's all-purpose "of / 's" link. English just lines the words up ("a beautiful girl"); Chinese threads 的 between them.

    Structure: Adjective + 的 + Noun

    beautiful漂亮piào liang的degirl女孩儿nǚ háir

    a beautiful girl

    you你nǐwant要yàocold冷lěng的deor还是hái shìhot热rè的de?

Do you want a cold one or a hot one?

Remember: 的 clips an adjective onto a noun. A two-syllable adjective almost always needs it (漂亮的女孩); a tight one-syllable pairing can drop it (好朋友, "good friend").

    Watch out

    • Adj + 的 can stand alone for "the … one(s)": 我要甜的 ("I'll have the sweet one").
    Bahasa Indonesia

Untuk menempelkan kata sifat di depan kata benda, rekatkan keduanya dengan 的 — penghubung "milik / 's" serbaguna bahasa Tiongkok. Bahasa Inggris hanya menyusun kata-kata berdampingan ("a beautiful girl"); bahasa Tiongkok menyelipkan 的 di antaranya.

    Struktur: Adjective + 的 + Noun

    beautiful漂亮piào liang的degirl女孩儿nǚ háir

    seorang gadis cantik

    you你nǐwant要yàocold冷lěng的deor还是hái shìhot热rè的de?

Apakah Anda ingin yang dingin atau yang panas?

Ingatlah: 的 menjepit kata sifat ke kata benda. Kata sifat dua-suku kata hampir selalu membutuhkannya (漂亮的女孩); pasangan satu-suku kata yang padat dapat melepaskannya (好朋友, "teman baik").

    Hati-hati

    • Adj + 的 dapat berdiri sendiri untuk "yang …": 我要甜的 ("Saya mau yang manis").
  • 4 Conjunctions · ⁨Konjungsi⁩

    或者 — "atau" (dalam pernyataan)

    English

Use 或者 to lay out alternatives in a statement — "either … or." It tells, it doesn't ask: "coffee or tea, both fine." The moment you want the listener to choose, you must switch to 还是 (the last point in this topic) — this is the single most-tested "or" trap in Chinese.

    Structure: Possibility 1 + 或者 + Possibility 2

    I我wǒdrink喝hēcoffee咖啡kā fēior或者huò zhětea茶cháeither,都dōuis fine行xíng。

Coffee or tea — either's fine for me.

Saturday星期六xīng qī liùor或者huò zhěSunday星期天xīng qī tiānboth,都dōuwork可以kě yǐ。

    Saturday or Sunday both work.

Remember: 或者 = "or" when you tell; 还是 = "or" when you ask. A statement ("either is fine") takes 或者; a question ("which one?") takes 还是.

    Watch out

    • It often closes with 都行 / 都可以 ("either one is fine").
    Bahasa Indonesia

Gunakan 或者 untuk menyajikan alternatif dalam sebuah pernyataan — "baik … atau …". Ini menyatakan, bukan bertanya: "kopi atau teh, keduanya boleh." Saat Anda ingin pendengar untuk memilih, Anda harus beralih ke 还是 (poin terakhir dalam topik ini) — ini adalah jebakan "atau" paling sering diuji dalam bahasa Tiongkok.

    Struktur: Possibility 1 + 或者 + Possibility 2

    I我wǒdrink喝hēcoffee咖啡kā fēior或者huò zhětea茶cháeither,都dōuis fine行xíng。

Kopi atau teh — mana pun boleh bagi saya.

Saturday星期六xīng qī liùor或者huò zhěSunday星期天xīng qī tiānboth,都dōuwork可以kě yǐ。

    Sabtu atau Minggu sama-sama bisa.

Ingatlah: 或者 = "atau" saat Anda menyatakan; 还是 = "atau" saat Anda bertanya. Pernyataan ("mana saja boleh") menggunakan 或者; pertanyaan ("mana yang?") menggunakan 还是.

    Hati-hati

    • Sering diakhiri dengan 都行 / 都可以 ("salah satu boleh").
    4.2

那 / 那么 — "lalu, dalam kasus itu"

    English

那 (or the fuller 那么) picks up what was just said and draws a suggestion or conclusion from it — "then, so, in that case." It opens your reply, reacting to the other person's remark. (It's the same 那 as "that" — literally "that being so, …".)

    Structure: Situation ,那(么) + Suggestion / Decision

    he他tāwon't不bùlisten听tīngthen,那nàI我wǒshould应该yīng gāido what怎么办zěn me bàn?

He won't listen — so what should I do?

Remember: 那(么) = "that being so…" — it reacts and suggests in conversation. It is not 所以 ("therefore"), which states a cause→effect inside one thought.

    Watch out

    • A bare 那 is the most natural in speech; 那么 sounds a touch more formal.
    Bahasa Indonesia

那 (atau yang lebih lengkap 那么) mengambil apa yang baru saja dikatakan dan menarik saran atau kesimpulan darinya — "lalu, jadi, dalam kasus itu." Ini membuka balasan Anda, bereaksi terhadap komentar lawan bicara. (Ini adalah 那 yang sama seperti "itu" — secara harfiah "itu begitu, …".)

    Struktur: Situation ,那(么) + Suggestion / Decision

    he他tāwon't不bùlisten听tīngthen,那nàI我wǒshould应该yīng gāido what怎么办zěn me bàn?

Dia tidak mau mendengarkan — lalu apa yang harus saya lakukan?

    you你nǐdon't不bùlike喜欢xǐ huanthis one这个zhè gethen,那nàwe我们wǒ menswap换huànfor another一个yí ge。

Anda tidak suka yang ini — lalu mari kita tukar.

Ingatlah: 那(么) = "melihat bahwa itu begitu…" — ia bereaksi dan menyarankan dalam percakapan. Ini bukan 所以 ("oleh karena itu"), yang menyatakan sebab→akibat dalam satu gagasan.

    Hati-hati

    • 那 tanpa awalan adalah yang paling alami dalam berbicara; 那么 terdengar sedikit lebih formal.
    4.3

    跟 … (一起) + kata kerja — "dengan (seseorang)"

    English

Before the verb, 跟 marks the person you do something with — "(together) with." It frequently teams up with 一起 ("together"). 跟 also means "to follow / heel," which is why it leans toward doing things alongside someone.

    Structure: Subject + 跟 + Person + (一起) + Verb

    you你nǐwant to要yàowith跟gēnme我wǒtogether一起yì qǐgo去qù吗ma?

Do you want to come with me?

    after跟gēnme我wǒread读dú。

    Read after me.

Remember: 跟 literally "to follow" — so 跟我读 is "read after me." The "with" phrase always sits before the verb: 跟你见面 ✓, never 见面你.

    Watch out

    • 跟 ≈ 和 for plain "with," but only 跟 carries the "follow" sense (跟我来, "come with / after me").
    Bahasa Indonesia

Sebelum kata kerja, 跟 menandai orang yang melakukan sesuatu bersamanya — "(bareng) dengan." Sering berpasangan dengan 一起 ("bareng"). 跟 juga berarti "mengikuti / heel", itulah sebabnya ia cenderung melakukan sesuatu di samping seseorang.

    Struktur: Subject + 跟 + Person + (一起) + Verb

    you你nǐwant to要yàowith跟gēnme我wǒtogether一起yì qǐgo去qù吗ma?

    Apakah Anda ingin ikut denganku?

    after跟gēnme我wǒread读dú。

    Ikuti bacaku.

Ingatlah: 跟 secara harfiah "untuk mengikuti" — sehingga 跟我读 adalah "baca sesudah aku." Frasa "dengan" selalu berada sebelum kata kerja: 跟你见面 ✓, bukan 见面你.

    Hati-hati

    • 跟 ≈ 和 untuk "dengan" biasa, tetapi hanya 跟 yang membawa makna "mengikuti" (跟我来, "ikut / setelah aku").
    4.4

    A + 还是 + B? — "atau" (dalam pertanyaan)

    English

When you ask someone to choose between options, use 还是 — never 或者. 还是 turns the sentence into an either/or question, and the asker is waiting for you to pick one.

    English

Place 以前 (yǐqián) after a time or an action to mean "before" it. The trap for English speakers is the order: the reference point comes first, then 以前 — the exact reverse of "before eating," which Chinese says as "eating-before."

Friday星期五xīng qī wǔbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐneed to要yàofinish做完zuò wánthis这些zhè xiēwork工作gōng zuò。

You need to finish this work before Friday.

Remember: Chinese stamps the time-word after the event: 吃饭以前 = "eating-before." Flip the English order and tack 以前 on the end.

    Watch out

    • "Verb + 以前" means "before [doing] the action" (做作业以前 = "before doing homework").
    Bahasa Indonesia

Tempatkan 以前 (yǐqián) setelah kata waktu atau tindakan untuk bermakna "sebelum"nya. Jebakan bagi penutur bahasa Inggris adalah urutan: titik rujukan diletakkan pertama, lalu 以前 — kebalikan persis dari "before eating," yang dalam bahasa Mandarin diucapkan sebagai "makan-sebelum."

Struktur: Time / Verb Phrase + 以前 ,……

    eating吃饭chī fànbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐwash hands洗手xǐ shǒu了le吗ma?

Apakah kamu mencuci tangan sebelum makan?

Friday星期五xīng qī wǔbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐneed to要yàofinish做完zuò wánthis这些zhè xiēwork工作gōng zuò。

Kamu harus menyelesaikan pekerjaan ini sebelum Jumat.

Ingat: Bahasa Mandarin menempelkan kata waktu setelah kejadian: 吃饭以前 = "makan-sebelum." Balik urutan bahasa Inggris dan tambahkan 以前 di bagian akhir.

    Hati-hati

    • "Kata Kerja + 以前" berarti "sebelum [melakukan] tindakan" (做作业以前 = "sebelum mengerjakan PR").
    5.2

以前,…… — "di masa lalu, sebelumnya" (umum)

    English

Drop 以前 at the front of a sentence and it means "in the past, back then" — a general earlier time, no specific event attached. It can also slip in right after the subject.

    Structure: 以前 + Subject + Verb · Subject + 以前 + Verb

in the past以前yǐ qiánI,我wǒcouldn't不会bú huìspeak说shuōChinese中文Zhōng wén。

    I couldn't speak Chinese before.

    he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shī。

He used to be a chef.

Remember: one 以前, two spots — after an event it's "before X" (吃饭以前); at the front it's "in the past, used to." It usually contrasts the past with now (often with a 了 marking the change).

    Watch out

    • Front position or after-the-subject — both are correct.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Lepaskan 以前 di awal kalimat dan artinya menjadi "di masa lalu, dulu" — waktu lampau yang umum, tanpa peristiwa spesifik yang melekat. Ini juga bisa muncul tepat setelah subjek.

    Struktur: 以前 + Subject + Verb · Subject + 以前 + Verb

in the past以前yǐ qiánI,我wǒcouldn't不会bú huìspeak说shuōChinese中文Zhōng wén。

*Dulu saya tidak bisa berbicara bahasa Mandarin."

    he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shī。

    *Dia dulunya adalah seorang koki."

Ingat: satu 以前, dua posisi — setelah sebuah peristiwa itu "sebelum X" (吃饭以前); di awal kalimat itu "di masa lalu, dulu." Biasanya membandingkan masa lalu dengan sekarang (sering dengan 了 menandai perubahan).

    Hati-hati

    • Posisi awal atau setelah-subjek — keduanya benar.
    5.3

刚才 — "baru saja, beberapa saat yang lalu"

    English

刚才 (gāngcái) is a time word for the very recent past — "just now, a moment ago." Don't confuse it with the adverb 刚: 刚才 is a noun (a moment that just passed) and can stand alone, while 刚 ("just") clings to the verb.

Structure: (Subject +) 刚才 + Verb

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    What did you just say?

    just now刚才gāng cáiwho谁shéicame来lái了le?

    Who came just now?

Remember: 刚才 = a noun (a moment in the past, can sit anywhere); 刚 = an adverb (glued to the verb). 我刚到 ("I just arrived") vs 刚才谁来了?("who came a moment ago?").

    Watch out

    • 刚才 can take a 了 / 的 on the verb (刚才到的); 刚 + verb usually doesn't.
    Bahasa Indonesia

刚才 (gāngcái) adalah kata waktu untuk masa lalu yang sangat baru — "baru saja, beberapa saat yang lalu." Jangan tertukar dengan adverb 刚: 刚才 adalah kata benda (sesaat yang baru lewat) dan dapat berdiri sendiri, sementara 刚 ("baru") menempel pada kata kerja.

Struktur: (Subject +) 刚才 + Verb

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

Apa yang baru saja kamu katakan?

    just now刚才gāng cáiwho谁shéicame来lái了le?

    Siapa yang datang baru saja?

Ingat: 刚才 = kata benda (sesaat di masa lalu, bisa diletakkan di mana saja); 刚 = adverb (menempel pada kata kerja). 我刚到 ("Saya baru saja tiba") vs 刚才谁来了?("siapa yang datang beberapa saat yang lalu?").

    Hati-hati

    • 刚才 dapat mengambil 了 / 的 pada kata kerja (刚才到的); 刚 + kata kerja biasanya tidak.
    5.4

    Waktu / Peristiwa + 时 — "ketika, pada saat"

    English

时 is a compact, formal stand-in for 的时候 — "when, at the time of" — placed after a time or event. The thing to remember: it drops the 的.

    Structure: Time / Event + 时 ,……

    exam考试kǎo shìduring时shídon't不要bú yàotalk说话shuō huà。

    Don't talk during the exam.

    I我wǒinterviews面试miàn shìduring时shíoften经常jīng chángask问wènthis这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tí。

I often ask this question during interviews.

Remember: 时 is 的时候 in its Sunday best — same meaning, formal register, and no 的: 考试时 ✓, never 考试的时. In speech you'd just say 考试的时候.

    Watch out

    • Reserve it for writing or set phrases; everyday speech uses 的时候.
    Bahasa Indonesia

时 adalah pengganti ringkas, formal untuk 的时候 — "ketika, pada saat" — diletakkan setelah waktu atau peristiwa. Hal yang perlu diingat: ia menghilangkan 的.

    Struktur: Time / Event + 时 ,……

    exam考试kǎo shìduring时shídon't不要bú yàotalk说话shuō huà。

    *Jangan bicara selama ujian."

    I我wǒinterviews面试miàn shìduring时shíoften经常jīng chángask问wènthis这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tí。

*Saya sering bertanya pertanyaan ini selama wawancara."

Ingat: 时 adalah 的时候 dalam pakaian terbaiknya — makna sama, register formal, dan tanpa 的: 考试时 ✓, jangan pernah 考试的时. Dalam percakapan Anda hanya akan mengatakan 考试的时候.

    Hati-hati

    • Simpan untuk tulisan atau ungkapan tetap; percakapan sehari-hari menggunakan 的时候.
    5.5

以后,…… — "di masa depan, mulai sekarang"

    English

At the start of a sentence, 以后 means "in the future, from now on, later." It mirrors 以前 exactly: it can sit at the front ("from now on"), after the subject, or after an event ("after …").

    Structure: 以后 + Subject + Verb · Event + 以后 ,……

    I我wǒfrom now on以后yǐ hòuwon't不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ了le。

I won't drink from now on.

class ends下课xià kèafter以后yǐ hòuwe,我们wǒ mengo去qùeat吃饭chī fàn。

    After class, let's go eat.

Remember: 以后 is the perfect mirror of 以前 — after an event = "after X" (下课以后 / 下课以前); at the front = "from now on" / "in the past." But it points to an indefinite future, not "in a moment" (that's 一会儿).

    Watch out

    • Don't let "later" mislead you into using it for "shortly" — 以后 is the open-ended future.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Di awal kalimat, 以后 berarti "di masa depan, mulai sekarang, nanti." Ini memantulkan 以前 secara sempurna: bisa berada di awal ("mulai sekarang"), setelah subjek, atau setelah peristiwa ("setelah …").

    Struktur: 以后 + Subject + Verb · Event + 以后 ,……

    I我wǒfrom now on以后yǐ hòuwon't不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ了le。

*Saya tidak akan minum lagi mulai sekarang."

class ends下课xià kèafter以后yǐ hòuwe,我们wǒ mengo去qùeat吃饭chī fàn。

    *Setelah pelajaran, mari kita makan."

Ingat: 以后 adalah cermin sempurna dari 以前 — setelah peristiwa = "setelah X" (下课以后 / 下课以前); di awal = "mulai sekarang" / "di masa lalu." Namun ini merujuk pada masa depan yang tidak pasti, bukan "dalam sesaat" (itu adalah 一会儿).

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan biarkan "nanti" menyesatkan Anda untuk menggunakannya sebagai "segera" — 以后 adalah masa depan yang terbuka.
    5.6

…… ,后来 …… — "kemudian, kemudian" (hanya masa lalu)

    English

后来 (hòulái) sequences past events — "afterwards, later on." The hard limit: both events must have already happened. 后(after) + 来(came) — it has, by definition, already come.

Structure: [Past Event 1] ,后来 [Past Event 2]

    at first开始kāi shǐmy我wǒparents父母fù mǔdidn't不bùagree同意tóng yìlater,后来hòu láiagreed同意tóng yì了le。

At first my parents disapproved; later they came round.

he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shīlater,后来hòu láibecame当dāng了lethe boss老板lǎo bǎn。

He used to be a chef; later he became the boss.

Remember: 后来 = a PAST "and then" (both events done and dusted). For a future "and then," switch to 然后. The 来 ("came") tells you it has already arrived.

    Watch out

    • Never use 后来 for a plan or future sequence — that's 然后.
    Bahasa Indonesia

后来 (hòulái) mengurutkan peristiwa masa lalu — "kemudian, kemudian." Batas kerasnya: kedua peristiwa harus sudah terjadi. 后(enceph) + 来(kedatangannya) — menurut definisi, ia sudah datang.

Struktur: [Past Event 1] ,后来 [Past Event 2]

    at first开始kāi shǐmy我wǒparents父母fù mǔdidn't不bùagree同意tóng yìlater,后来hòu láiagreed同意tóng yì了le。

*Awalnya orang tua saya tidak menyetujui; kemudian mereka berubah pikiran."

he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shīlater,后来hòu láibecame当dāng了lethe boss老板lǎo bǎn。

*Dia dulunya adalah seorang koki; kemudian dia menjadi bos."

Ingat: 后来 = 'dan kemudian' MASA LALU (kedua peristiwa sudah selesai). Untuk 'dan kemudian' di masa depan, beralihlah ke 然后. 来 ("datang") memberi tahu Anda bahwa hal itu telah tiba.

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan gunakan 后来 untuk rencana atau urutan masa depan — itu adalah 然后.

    万 / 亿 — big numbers

    English

Here's where Chinese numbers feel alien: the language counts big in 万 (ten thousand) and 亿 (hundred million), not in thousands and millions. So you have to group digits in fours, not threes — and that mental regrouping is the whole skill.

    Structure: Number + 万 · Number + 亿

    one million一百万yì bǎi wàn

    1,000,000 — literally "a hundred 万 (ten-thousands)."

    1.4 billion十四亿shí sì yì

    1.4 billion — roughly China's population.

    Remember: mentally shift the comma one digit left: 12,000 → "1|2000" → 一万两千. Lock in 万 = 10⁴ and 亿 = 10⁸, then regroup in fours: 52,152 = 五万两千一百五十二.

    Watch out

    Kata kerja + 着 — keadaan berkelanjutan

    English

着 (zhe) after a verb freezes the action into a lingering state — the door is (standing) open, you are holding it. Think of 着 as a clip that keeps the verb "switched on." A second, very common use is Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2: V1着 sets the posture or manner, and V2 is the real action done in that state.

    Structure: Verb + 着 · Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2

you all你们nǐ mensit坐zuò着zheI,我wǒright away马上mǎ shàngcome back回来huí lái。

Stay seated — I'll be right back.

    she她tālikes to喜欢xǐ huanstand站zhàn着zheeat吃饭chī fàn。

She likes to eat standing up.

    he他tāsmiling笑xiào着zhesaid说shuōsorry对不起duì bu qǐ。

    Smiling, he said sorry.

Remember: 着 = the verb held on, lingering (门开着 = "the door stays open"); for an action actively in progress, use 在 (他在吃饭). In V1着V2, V1 is the backdrop, V2 the real action — 站着吃 = "eat while standing."

    Watch out

    • 着 is a state, not a play-by-play — pair it with 在/正在 only when you really mean "is currently …".
    Bahasa Indonesia

着 (zhe) setelah kata kerja membekukan aksi menjadi keadaan yang bertahan — pintu terbuka (berdiri terbuka), Anda memegangnya. Bayangkan 着 sebagai klip yang membuat kata kerja tetap "nyala." Penggunaan kedua yang sangat umum adalah Kata Kerja 1 + 着 + Kata Kerja 2: V1着 menetapkan postur atau cara, dan V2 adalah aksi nyata yang dilakukan dalam keadaan tersebut.

    Struktur: Verb + 着 · Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2

you all你们nǐ mensit坐zuò着zheI,我wǒright away马上mǎ shàngcome back回来huí lái。

Duduklah tetap — saya akan segera kembali.

    she她tālikes to喜欢xǐ huanstand站zhàn着zheeat吃饭chī fàn。

    Dia suka makan sambil berdiri.

    he他tāsmiling笑xiào着zhesaid说shuōsorry对不起duì bu qǐ。

    Tersenyum, dia minta maaf.

Ingat: 着 = kata kerja dipertahankan, bertahan (门开着 = "pintu tetap terbuka"); untuk aksi yang benar-benar sedang berlangsung, gunakan 在 (他在吃饭). Dalam V1着V2, V1 adalah latar belakang, V2 adalah aksi nyata — 站着吃 = "makan sambil berdiri."

    Hati-hati

    • 着 adalah keadaan, bukan laporan langkah demi langkah — padankan dengan 在/正在 hanya ketika Anda benar-benar bermaksud "sedang …".
    7.2

    …… 了 — perubahan keadaan

    English

Sentence-final 了 can announce a new situation — something has become the case that wasn't before. This "change" 了 (often called 了₂) is a different beast from the 了 that marks a completed action; here it means "now."

    Structure: Subject + Adjective + 了 · Subject + Verb + 了

    I我wǒhungry饿è了le。

    I'm hungry (now).

    raining下雨xià yǔ了le。

    It's raining (it wasn't before).

    the baby宝宝bǎo baocan会huìtalk说话shuō huà了le。

    The baby can talk now.

Remember: this 了 = "now, a new state" (饿了 = "hungry now"), not "did and finished." Whenever you'd add "now" in English, this is the 了 you want: 他当经理了 ("he's a manager now").

    Watch out

    • Same character, two jobs: change-of-state 了 (新情况) vs completed-action 了 (做完了). Context and position tell them apart.
    Bahasa Indonesia

了 di akhir kalimat dapat mengumumkan situasi baru — sesuatu telah menjadi hal yang sebelumnya belum terjadi. Perubahan 了 ini (sering disebut 了₂) berbeda dari 了 yang menandai tindakan selesai; di sini artinya "sekarang."

    Struktur: Subject + Adjective + 了 · Subject + Verb + 了

    I我wǒhungry饿è了le。

    Saya lapar (sekarang).

    raining下雨xià yǔ了le。

    Hujan turun (sebelumnya tidak).

    the baby宝宝bǎo baocan会huìtalk说话shuō huà了le。

    Bayi itu bisa bicara sekarang.

Ingat: 了 ini = "sekarang, keadaan baru" (饿了 = "lapar sekarang"), bukan "telah dan selesai." Whenever Anda akan menambahkan "sekarang" dalam bahasa Inggris, inilah 了 yang Anda inginkan: 他当经理了 ("dia sekarang manajer").

    Hati-hati

    • Karakter sama, dua tugas: 了 perubahan keadaan (kondisi baru) vs 了 tindakan selesai (telah selesai). Konteks dan posisi membedakan keduanya.
    7.3

    …… 呢? — "dan kamu? / bagaimana dengan …?"

    English

呢 at the end lobs a question back without you having to repeat it — "and …? what about …?" A neat extra: a bare noun + 呢 (with no prior question) asks "where is …?"

    Structure: Topic + 呢?

    I我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎoyou,你nǐ呢ne?

    I'm well — and you?

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jī呢ne?

    Where's my phone?

Remember: 呢 = "…and X?" — it bounces the last question back (你呢? "and you?"). With nothing asked before, noun + 呢 means "where is X?" (钱呢? "where's the money?").

    Watch out

    • It rides on context — without a prior question or a "where is" sense, a bare 呢 has nothing to bounce off.
    Bahasa Indonesia

呢 di akhir melemparkan pertanyaan kembali tanpa perlu mengulanginya — "dan …? bagaimana dengan …?" Tambahan menarik: kata benda telanjang + 呢 (tanpa pertanyaan sebelumnya) bertanya "di mana …?"

    Struktur: Topic + 呢?

    I我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎoyou,你nǐ呢ne?

    Saya baik — dan kamu?

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jī呢ne?

    Di mana ponselku?

Ingat: 呢 = "…dan X?" — memantulkan pertanyaan terakhir kembali (你呢? "dan kamu?"). Dengan tidak ada yang ditanyakan sebelumnya, kata benda + 呢 berarti "di mana X?" (钱呢? "di mana uangnya?").

    Hati-hati

    • Ini bergantung pada konteks — tanpa pertanyaan sebelumnya atau makna "di mana", 呢 telanjang tidak memiliki apa pun untuk dipantulkan.

    的 / 得 / 地 — tiga "de" struktural

    English

Three different characters, all pronounced de, each with exactly one job. Keeping them straight is the single most common slip in written Chinese — so sort them by what comes next.

    Structure: 的 + Noun · Verb + 得 + Complement · Adjective + 地 + Verb

    you你nǐdid做zuò得devery很hěnwell好hǎobecause,因为yīn wèiyou你nǐcarefully认真rèn zhēn地delistened听课tīng kè。

    Mom妈妈mā ma的denew新xīnphone手机shǒu jīruns跑pǎo得deespecially特别tè biéfast快kuài。

Mom's new phone runs especially fast.

Remember: sort them by what follows: 的 → a noun (漂亮的衣服); 地 → a verb, building an adverb (认真地听); 得 → sits after a verb, rating the result (做得很好). Tip: 地 has 土 "earth" (it grounds the verb); 得 leans on the verb to tell you how well.

    Watch out

    • A true adverb (不, 也, 都) needs no 地 — only an adjective used adverbially does (认真地, but just 都, never 都地).
    Bahasa Indonesia

Tiga karakter berbeda, semua dibaca de, masing-masing memiliki satu tugas. Menjaga mereka tetap terpisah adalah kesalahan paling umum dalam tulisan Chinese — jadi urutkan berdasarkan apa yang datang selanjutnya.

    Struktur: 的 + Noun · Verb + 得 + Complement · Adjective + 地 + Verb

    you你nǐdid做zuò得devery很hěnwell好hǎobecause,因为yīn wèiyou你nǐcarefully认真rèn zhēn地delistened听课tīng kè。

Kamu melakukan dengan baik, karena kamu mendengarkan dengan saksama di kelas.

    Mom妈妈mā ma的denew新xīnphone手机shǒu jīruns跑pǎo得deespecially特别tè biéfast快kuài。

Ponsel baru ibu berjalan sangat cepat.

Ingat: urutkan berdasarkan apa yang mengikuti: 的 → kata benda (漂亮的衣服); 地 → kata kerja, membangun kata keterangan (认真地听); 得 → duduk setelah kata kerja, menilai hasil (做得很好). Tips: 地 memiliki 土 "bumi" (ia membumikan kata kerja); 得 bersandar pada kata kerja untuk memberi tahu Anda seberapa baik.

    关于 — "tentang, mengenai, untuk"

    English

关于 (guānyú) flags the topic a sentence is about — "about, regarding, as for." Used this way it opens the sentence, setting the subject up before you say anything about it: "As for X, …".

    Structure: 关于 + Topic ,……

as for关于guān yúChinese中国Zhōng guóhistory历史lì shǐI,我wǒknow知道zhī dào的denot much不多bù duō。

As for Chinese history, I don't know much.

As for your suggestion, the boss is still thinking it over.

Remember: 关于 + topic = a headline at the front of the sentence ("Regarding X, …"). It can't sit mid-sentence like English "about."

    Watch out

    • Many English "about"s are baked into the Chinese verb — say 聊你的工作 ("talk about your job"), not 聊关于….
    Bahasa Indonesia

关于 (guānyú) menandai topik yang dibicarakan dalam sebuah kalimat — "tentang, mengenai, untuk." Digunakan demikian ini membuka kalimat, menyiapkan subjek sebelum Anda mengatakan apa pun tentangnya: "Untuk X, …".

    Struktur: 关于 + Topic ,……

as for关于guān yúChinese中国Zhōng guóhistory历史lì shǐI,我wǒknow知道zhī dào的denot much不多bù duō。

Untuk usulan Anda, bos masih mempertimbangkannya.

Ingat: 关于 + topik = judul di awal kalimat ("Mengenai X, …"). Tidak bisa berada di tengah kalimat seperti "about" dalam bahasa Inggris.

    Hati-hati

    • Banyak "about" dalam bahasa Inggris tertanam dalam kata kerja Mandarin — katakan 聊你的工作 ("bicara tentang pekerjaanmu"), bukan 聊关于….

    直到 … 才 … — "tidak sampai"

    English

直到 (zhídào) means "all the way until (a point)." Pair it with 才 and you get the emphatic "not until X did Y happen" — the 才 is what stamps on the "and that's surprisingly late."

    Structure: 直到 + Time / Event ,Subject + 才 + Verb

not until直到zhí dàohalf past twelve十二点半shí èr diǎn bànI,我wǒonly then才cáifinished做完zuò wánthe homework作业zuò yè。

He didn't relax until the doctor came.

Remember: 直到 sets the deadline, 才 delivers the "finally / only then." Drop the 才 and you lose the "annoyingly late" punch.

    Watch out

    • The subject may also go before 直到: 我直到十二点半才….
    Bahasa Indonesia

直到 (zhídào) berarti "selama hingga (titik tertentu)." Padankan dengan 才 dan Anda mendapatkan penekanan "tidak sampai X terjadi Y" — 才-lah yang memberikan penekanan "dan itu sebenarnya terlambat."

    Struktur: 直到 + Time / Event ,Subject + 才 + Verb

not until直到zhí dàohalf past twelve十二点半shí èr diǎn bànI,我wǒonly then才cáifinished做完zuò wánthe homework作业zuò yè。

Ingat: 直到 menetapkan batas waktu, 才 menyampaikan "akhirnya / baru kemudian." Hilangkan 才 dan Anda kehilangan efek "terlambat sekali".

    Hati-hati

    • Subjek juga bisa diletakkan sebelum 直到: 我直到十二点半才….

向 — "menuju, ke (dan kadang dari)"

    English

向 (xiàng) aims an action towards a person or direction — no actual movement required (向他笑, "smile at him"). The twist English speakers must memorise: a few verbs that take "from" in English use 向 ("toward") in Chinese — 向…借钱 ("borrow from"), 向…学习 ("learn from").

    Structure: 向 + Direction / Person + Verb

    向xiàngforward前qiánlook看kàn。

    Look ahead.

    you你nǐmust必须bì xūto向xiànghim他tāapologise道歉dào qiàn!

    You must apologise to him!

    I我wǒdon't不bùlike喜欢xǐ huanfrom向xiàngfriends朋友péng youborrowing money借钱jiè qián。

I don't like borrowing money from friends.

Remember: 向 = an arrow pointing at someone. Even "learn / borrow from" is framed as aiming toward the source in Chinese: 向老师学习 ("learn toward the teacher").

    Watch out

    • Use it with verbs of facing or directing: 向前走 ("walk forward"), 向我求助 ("turn to me for help").
    Bahasa Indonesia

向 (xiàng) mengarahkan aksi menuju seseorang atau arah — tidak diperlukan gerakan aktual (向他笑, "tersenyum padanya"). Hal unik yang harus diingat penutur bahasa Inggris: beberapa kata kerja yang menggunakan "dari" dalam bahasa Inggris menggunakan 向 ("menuju") dalam Mandarin — 向…借钱 ("meminjam dari"), 向…学习 ("belajar dari").

    Struktur: 向 + Direction / Person + Verb

    向xiàngforward前qiánlook看kàn。

    Melihat ke depan.

    you你nǐmust必须bì xūto向xiànghim他tāapologise道歉dào qiàn!

    Kamu harus meminta maaf kepadanya!

    I我wǒdon't不bùlike喜欢xǐ huanfrom向xiàngfriends朋友péng youborrowing money借钱jiè qián。

Saya tidak suka meminjam uang dari teman-teman.

Ingatlah: 向 = panah yang menunjuk ke seseorang. Bahkan "belajar / meminjam dari" juga dirangkaikan sebagai menargetkan menuju sumber dalam bahasa Mandarin: 向老师学习 ("belajar menuju guru").

    看起来 — "terlihat, tampak, terlihat"

    English

看起来 (kànqǐlái) reports a snap impression from what you can see — "(it) looks / seems / appears" — and comes right before the description. Best of all, the whole sense-family works the same way: swap in 听 ("sounds"), 吃 ("tastes"), 用 ("feels to use") and you've got a free set of patterns.

Structure: Subject + 看起来 + Adjective

the cake蛋糕dàn gāolooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntasty好吃hǎo chī。

    The cake looks delicious.

    he他tālooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntired累lèi。

    He looks tired.

Remember: sense verb + 起来 = "comes across as …". 看起来 (looks), 听起来 (sounds), 吃起来 (tastes), 用起来 (handles) — learn the frame once, reuse it everywhere.

    Watch out

    • For an inferred "it seems" (a conclusion, not a look), reach for 好像 or 似乎 instead.
    Bahasa Indonesia

看起来 (kànqǐlái) menyampaikan kesan sesaat dari apa yang dapat Anda lihat — "(itu) terlihat / tampaknya / kelihatannya" — dan muncul tepat sebelum deskripsi. Yang terbaik, seluruh keluarga makna ini bekerja dengan cara yang sama: ganti dengan 听 ("terdengar"), 吃 ("terasa rasanya"), 用 ("terasa saat digunakan") dan Anda memiliki satu set pola gratis.

Struktur: Subject + 看起来 + Adjective

the cake蛋糕dàn gāolooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntasty好吃hǎo chī。

    Kue itu terlihat lezat.

    he他tālooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntired累lèi。

    Dia terlihat lelah.

Ingatlah: kata kerja indra + 起来 = "tampak seperti …". 看起来 (terlihat), 听起来 (terdengar), 吃起来 (terasa rasanya), 用起来 (terasa saat digunakan) — pelajari bingkainya sekali, gunakan di mana saja.

    Hati-hati

    • Untuk "tampaknya" yang bersifat inferensi (kesimpulan, bukan penglihatan), gunakan 好像 atau 似乎.

    没(有) — "tidak se- ... -as" (perbandingan)

    English

没(有) is the flip side of 比: "A 没有 B + Adjective" means "A is not as [Adjective] as B." Yes — it's the very same 没有 as "not have," moonlighting as a comparison word.

    Structure: Noun 1 + 没(有) + Noun 2 + Adjective

Xiao Zhang小张Xiǎo Zhāngnot as没有méi yǒuXiao Li小李Xiǎo Lǐtall高gāo。

Xiao Zhang isn't as tall as Xiao Li.

    today今天jīn tiānnot as没有méi yǒuyesterday昨天zuó tiāncold冷lěng。

Today isn't as cold as yesterday.

Remember: 比 = "more than"; 没有 = "not as much as." 你比我高 ("you're taller than me") flips to 我没有你高 ("I'm not as tall as you"). Add 那么 for force: 没有他那么忙.

    Watch out

    • The adjective is bare — no 很: 没有你高 ✓, not 没有你很高.
    Bahasa Indonesia

没(有) adalah sisi terbalik dari 比: "A 没有 B + Kata Sifat" berarti "A tidak se- [Kata Sifat] se- B." Ya — itu sama persis dengan 没有 "tidak punya", yang juga berfungsi sebagai kata perbandingan.

    Struktur: Noun 1 + 没(有) + Noun 2 + Adjective

Xiao Zhang小张Xiǎo Zhāngnot as没有méi yǒuXiao Li小李Xiǎo Lǐtall高gāo。

Xiao Zhang tidak setinggi Xiao Li.

    today今天jīn tiānnot as没有méi yǒuyesterday昨天zuó tiāncold冷lěng。

Ingatlah: 比 = "lebih dari"; 没有 = "tidak se-banyak". 你比我高 ("Anda lebih tinggi dariku") dibalik menjadi 我没有你高 ("Saya tidak setinggi Anda"). Tambahkan 那么 untuk penguatan: 没有他那么忙.

    Hati-hati

    • Kata sifatnya polos — tanpa 很: 没有你高 ✓, bukan 没有你很高.

    让 / 叫 / 请 / 使 — membuat seseorang melakukan sesuatu

    English

These causative verbs slot a person between the verb and what they end up doing — "make / let / ask / cause someone to …." Pick by tone: 让 is the everyday "make / let," 叫 a colloquial "tell," 请 a polite "ask / invite," and 使 a formal, written "cause."

    Structure: Subject + 让 / 叫 / 请 / 使 + Person + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy为什么wèi shén menot不bùlet让ràngme我wǒgo去qù?

Why won't you let me go?

    I我wǒwant想xiǎngto ask请qǐngyou你nǐdo帮bāngme我wǒa一个yí gefavour忙máng。

I'd like to ask you a favour.

Remember: all four mean "get someone to do something," sorted by politeness: 使 (formal) → 让 (neutral, "make/let") → 叫 (casual, "tell") → 请 (polite, "ask/invite"). 让 is your safe default in speech.

    Watch out

    • 让 covers both "make" and "let" — context decides which.
    Bahasa Indonesia

    you你nǐwhy为什么wèi shén menot不bùlet让ràngme我wǒgo去qù?

Mengapa kamu tidak mengizinkan aku pergi?

    I我wǒwant想xiǎngto ask请qǐngyou你nǐdo帮bāngme我wǒa一个yí gefavour忙máng。

Saya ingin meminta tolong kepada Anda.

Ingatlah: keempatnya berarti "menciptakan seseorang untuk melakukan sesuatu", diurutkan berdasarkan kesopanan: 使 (formal) → 让 (netral, "membuat/mengizinkan") → 叫 (kasual, "mengatakan") → 请 (sopan, "meminta/mengundang"). 让 adalah pilihan aman default dalam percakapan.

    Hati-hati

    • 让 mencakup baik "membuat" maupun "mengizinkan" — konteks yang menentukan mana yang dimaksud.

经过 — "melewati / setelah melalui"

    English

经过 (jīngguò) wears two hats. As a verb it means "pass by / through (a place)"; as a preposition it sets up "after going through (a process or time), …" before you state the result.

Structure: 经过 + Place (verb) · 经过 + Process / Time ,Result

I我wǒevery day每天měi tiānto work上班shàng bān都dōupass by经过jīng guòhere这里zhè lǐ。

I pass by here every day on my way to work.

after经过jīng guòhard work努力nǔ lìshe,她tāgot into考上kǎo shàng了leuniversity大学dà xué。

Through hard work, she got into university.

Remember: 经过 always means "go through" — through a place (the verb) or through a process (the preposition). Compare 通过 ("by means of, via"): 经过 rides a journey/process, 通过 rides a method/agent.

    Watch out

    • As a preposition it opens the sentence: 经过 + process, then the result.
    Bahasa Indonesia

经过 (jīngguò) memiliki dua fungsi. Sebagai kata kerja ia berarti "melewati / masuk ke (suatu tempat)"; sebagai kata depan ia menetapkan "setelah melalui (suatu proses atau waktu), …" sebelum Anda menyatakan hasilnya.

Struktur: 经过 + Place (kata kerja) · 经过 + Process / Time ,Result

I我wǒevery day每天měi tiānto work上班shàng bān都dōupass by经过jīng guòhere这里zhè lǐ。

Aku melewati sini setiap hari saat pergi bekerja.

after经过jīng guòhard work努力nǔ lìshe,她tāgot into考上kǎo shàng了leuniversity大学dà xué。

Melalui kerja keras, dia diterima di universitas.

Ingatlah: 经过 selalu berarti "melalui" — melalui tempat (kata kerja) atau melalui proses (kata depan). Bandingkan dengan 通过 ("dengan cara, lewat"): 经过 menempuh perjalanan/proses, 通过 menempuh metode/agen.

    Hati-hati

    • Sebagai kata depan, ia membuka kalimat: 经过 + proses, lalu hasilnya.

    应该 / 该 — "harus, seharusnya"

    English

应该 (yīnggāi, often clipped to 该) is the everyday "should, ought to" — what's right, advisable, or expected. It's an auxiliary verb, so it leans on the main verb that follows. A handy second meaning: it also covers "ought to be the case / probably" (an expectation, not a duty).

Structure: Subject + 应该 + Verb (+ Object)

    you你nǐshould应该yīng gāimore多duōrest休息xiū xi。

    You should rest more.

    I我wǒshould应该yīng gāigive给gěiyou你nǐhow much多少duō shaomoney钱qián?

    in在zàiChina中国Zhōng guóyou,你nǐshould应该yīng gāitry试试shì shibaijiu白酒bái jiǔ。

In China, you ought to try baijiu.

Remember: 应该 has two flavours — "should" (advice: 你应该休息) and "should be / probably" (expectation: 他应该到了, "he should be there by now"). Same word, told apart by context.

    Watch out

    • Negate with 不应该 ("shouldn't"): 你不应该这样做.
    • The clipped 该 is the casual spoken form: 你该走了 ("you'd better get going").
    Bahasa Indonesia

应该 (yīnggāi, sering dipendekkan menjadi 该) adalah "harus, seharusnya" sehari-hari — apa yang benar, disarankan, atau diharapkan. Ini adalah kata kerja bantu, sehingga bersandar pada kata kerja utama yang mengikuti. Makna kedua yang berguna: ia juga mencakup "seharusnya terjadi / kemungkinan besar" (ekspektasi, bukan kewajiban).

Struktur: Subject + 应该 + Verb (+ Object)

    you你nǐshould应该yīng gāimore多duōrest休息xiū xi。

    Anda harus lebih banyak beristirahat.

    I我wǒshould应该yīng gāigive给gěiyou你nǐhow much多少duō shaomoney钱qián?

    in在zàiChina中国Zhōng guóyou,你nǐshould应该yīng gāitry试试shì shibaijiu白酒bái jiǔ。

Di Tiongkok, Anda sebaiknya mencoba baijiu.

Ingatlah: 应该 memiliki dua rasa — "harus" (nasihat: 你应该休息) dan "seharusnya / kemungkinan" (ekspektasi: 他应该到了, "dia seharusnya sudah sampai sekarang"). Kata yang sama, dibedakan oleh konteks.

    Hati-hati

    • Negasikan dengan 不应该 ("seharusnya tidak"): 你不应该这样做.

    难 + kata kerja — "sulit untuk …"

    English

Stick 难 ("difficult") in front of a verb and you get "hard to …" — 难学 ("hard to learn"), 难找 ("hard to find"). Its mirror image is 好 ("easy to": 好学 "easy to learn"). With sense verbs, 难 fuses into fixed adjectives: 难吃 ("bad-tasting"), 难听 ("unpleasant to hear").

    Structure: Subject + (很) 难 + Verb

    Chinese is hard to learn.

    here这里zhè lǐ的decoffee咖啡kā fēivery很hěnbad-tasting难喝nán hē。

Remember: 难 = "hard to," 好 = "easy to." Bolt either onto a verb: 难懂 / 好懂 ("hard / easy to understand"), 难看 ("ugly," lit. "hard to look at"), 好看 ("good-looking").

    Watch out

    • With sense verbs it forms set adjectives: 难吃, 难听, 难闻 ("smells bad"), 难看 ("ugly").
    Bahasa Indonesia

Tempatkan 难 ("sulit") di depan kata kerja dan Anda mendapatkan "sulit untuk …" — 难学 ("sulit untuk dipelajari"), 难找 ("sulit untuk ditemukan"). Bayangan cerminnya adalah 好 ("mudah untuk": 好学 "mudah untuk dipelajari"). Dengan kata kerja indra, 难 menyatu menjadi kata sifat tetap: 难吃 ("rasa buruk"), 难听 ("tidak enak didengar").

    Struktur: Subject + (很) 难 + Verb

    Bahasa Mandarin sulit dipelajari.

Ingatlah: 难 = "sulit untuk," 好 = "mudah untuk." Pasang salah satu ke kata kerja: 难懂 / 好懂 ("sulit / mudah dipahami"), 难看 ("jelek", lit. "sulit untuk dilihat"), 好看 ("cantik").

    Hati-hati

    • Dengan kata kerja indra, ia membentuk kata sifat tetap: 难吃, 难听, 难闻 ("bau buruk"), 难看 ("jelek").

    kata kerja + 了 + durasi — "telah … selama (durasi tertentu)"

    English

To say how long a finished action lasted, drop the duration after the verb — Chinese has no "for" preposition, so the word order does the carrying. If there's an object too, slip 的 in front of it.

    Structure: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration (+ 的 + Object)

    he他tāstudied学xué了lea year一年yì niánChinese中文Zhōng wén。

He studied Chinese for a year.

we我们wǒ mentook坐zuò了lefifteen十五个shí wǔ gehours小时xiǎo shí的deflight飞机fēi jī。

    We took a fifteen-hour flight.

Remember: no "for" word — the slot does it. Duration goes after the verb (学了一年, "studied for a year"), and an object hangs off a 的 (看了一天的电视, "watched TV all day").

    Watch out

    • Contrast 一年没学了 ("haven't studied in a year"), where the same duration flips to before the verb.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Untuk mengatakan berapa lama tindakan selesai berlangsung, letakkan durasi setelah kata kerja — bahasa Mandarin tidak memiliki kata depan "for", sehingga susunan kata yang membawanya. Jika ada objek juga, sisipkan 的 di depannya.

    Struktur: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration (+ 的 + Object)

    he他tāstudied学xué了lea year一年yì niánChinese中文Zhōng wén。

Dia telah mempelajari bahasa Mandarin selama setahun.

we我们wǒ mentook坐zuò了lefifteen十五个shí wǔ gehours小时xiǎo shí的deflight飞机fēi jī。

Kami menjalani penerbangan selama fifteen jam.

Ingatlah: tanpa kata "for" — slot itu yang menjelaskannya. Durasi diletakkan setelah kata kerja (学了一年, "mempelajari selama setahun"), dan objek tergantung pada 的 (看了一天的电视, "menonton TV sepanjang hari").

    Hati-hati

    • Bandingkan dengan 一年没学了 ("belum belajar selama setahun"), di mana durasi yang sama berpindah ke sebelum kata kerja.
    11.3

    kata kerja + 了 + durasi + 了 — "sedang … (dan masih berlanjut)"

    English

Tag a second 了 onto the very end and the action stretches up to now and keeps going — "have been …ing for X (and still am)." When the verb has an object, you repeat the verb.

    Structure: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了 · (with object) Subj + Verb + Obj + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了

    he他tāin在zàiBeijing北京Běi jīnghas lived住zhù了letwo years两年liǎng nián了le。

    I我wǒlearning学xuéChinese中文Zhōng wénhave learned学xué了lea year一年yì nián了le。

I've been learning Chinese for a year now.

Remember: one 了 = a finished stretch; two 了 = still going. That trailing 了 means "…and counting." With an object, double the verb: 学中文学了一年了.

    Watch out

    • Without the final 了, 住了两年 reads as "lived there two years (then left)" — the second 了 is the whole "still ongoing" difference.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Pasang 一个 了 kedua di ujung paling belakang dan tindakan tersebut memanjang hingga sekarang dan terus berjalan — "telah …ing selama X (dan masih melakukannya)." Ketika kata kerja memiliki objek, Anda mengulang kata kerja tersebut.

    Struktur: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了 · (dengan objek) Subj + Verb + Obj + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了

    he他tāin在zàiBeijing北京Běi jīnghas lived住zhù了letwo years两年liǎng nián了le。

Dia telah tinggal di Beijing selama dua tahun (dan masih tetap tinggal).

    I我wǒlearning学xuéChinese中文Zhōng wénhave learned学xué了lea year一年yì nián了le。

Saya telah belajar bahasa Mandarin selama satu tahun sekarang.

Ingat: satu 了 = rentang selesai; dua 了 = masih berlangsung. 了 yang tersisa berarti "…dan masih berlanjut." Dengan objek, gandakan kata kerja: 学中文学了一年了.

    Hati-hati

    • Tanpa 了 terakhir, 住了两年 dibaca sebagai "tinggal di sana dua tahun (lalu pergi)" — 了 kedua adalah seluruh perbedaan "masih berlangsung".

没办法 + 动词 — "tidak ada cara, tidak bisa"

    English

Remember: 办法 = "a way / method," so 没办法 = "no way (to)" and 有办法 = "have a way." Alone, 没办法 is the all-purpose "what can you do."

    Watch out

    • It's stronger and more resigned than 不能 — it says the door is simply shut.
    Bahasa Indonesia

没办法 berarti "tidak ada cara." Berdiri sendiri itu seperti mengacungkan bahu — "tidak bisa apa-apa, bagaimana lagi." Di depan kata kerja, artinya "tidak punya cara untuk …, mustahil …."

Struktur: Subject + 没办法 + Verb

Remember: doubling a verb adds a "just a little / give it a try" softness. One-syllable doubles AA (看看), two-syllable doubles ABAB (商量商量) — not the adjective's AABB. 看一看 and past 看了看 are common variants.

    Watch out

    • It only fits actions you can do "a bit of" — you wouldn't reduplicate a one-off like 死 or 完成.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Menggandakan kata kerja membuat tindakan menjadi singkat, ringan, "coba sedikit" — "lihat sekilas," "bincangkan." Ini menghangatkan nada, sempurna untuk saran lembut dan permintaan sopan.

    Struktur: Verb + Verb (satu-suku, AA) · ABAB (dua-suku)

I我wǒwant to想xiǎnggo out出去chū qùfor a little walk走走zǒu zou。

    很 + 动词 — perasaan membutuhkan 很

    English

A small club of feeling / mental verbs (喜欢, 想, 爱, 希望, 了解, 讨厌 …) act like adjectives and take 很 — which is exactly why beginners end up saying "very like!"

    Structure: Subject + 很 + [feeling verb]

    I我wǒreally很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanthis这部zhè bùfilm电影diàn yǐng。

    I really like this film.

    he他tāwell很hěnunderstands了解liǎo jiěChinese中国Zhōng guóculture文化wén huà。

    He understands Chinese culture well.

Remember: feelings behave like adjectives, so they take 很 (很喜欢, 很想). Action verbs don't — there's no 很吃 or 很走. If it's an emotion or a state of mind, 很 is welcome.

    Watch out

    • As with adjectives, this 很 is often just the plain positive form, not a strong "very."
    Bahasa Indonesia

Kelompok kecil kata kerja perasaan / mental (喜欢, 想, 爱, 希望, 了解, 讨厌 …) bertindak seperti sifat dan mengambil 很 — itulah sebabnya pemula sering mengatakan "sangat suka!"

    Struktur: Subject + 很 + [feeling verb]

    I我wǒreally很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanthis这部zhè bùfilm电影diàn yǐng。

    Saya benar-benar suka film ini.

    he他tāwell很hěnunderstands了解liǎo jiěChinese中国Zhōng guóculture文化wén huà。

Dia memahami budaya Mandarin dengan baik.

Ingat: perasaan behaving seperti sifat, sehingga mereka mengambil 很 (很喜欢, 很想). Kata kerja tindakan tidak — tidak ada 很吃 atau 很走. Jika itu emosi atau keadaan pikiran, 很 disambut baik.

    Hati-hati

    • Sama seperti sifat, 很 ini sering kali hanya bentuk positif biasa, bukan "sangat" yang kuat.

    动词 + 来 / 去 — komplemen arah

    English

Tag 来 ("towards me") or 去 ("away from me") onto a verb to show which way the action moves relative to you, the speaker. These build into handy compounds — 进来 ("come in"), 出去 ("go out"), 起来 ("up"), 过来 ("over here").

    Structure: Verb + 来 / 去 · Verb + compound (上来 / 出去 …)

    I'm我wǒ在zàiupstairs楼上lóu shàngyou,你nǐcome up上来shàng lái。

    I'm upstairs — come up.

    please请qǐngstand站zhànup起来qǐ lái。

    Please stand up.

Remember: 来 = toward me, 去 = away from me — anchored to wherever the speaker stands. 进来 ("come in," I'm inside) vs 进去 ("go in," I'm outside).

    Watch out

    • With a place object, the place sits between the verb and 来 / 去: 回美国去 / 回美国 — never 回去美国.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Tag 来 ("mendekati saya") atau 去 ("menjauh dari saya") ke kata kerja untuk menunjukkan arah pergerakan tindakan relatif terhadap Anda, si penutur. Ini membentuk majemuk yang berguna — 进来 ("masuk"), 出去 ("keluar"), 起来 ("naik"), 过来 ("ke sini").

    Struktur: Verb + 来 / 去 · Verb + compound (上来 / 出去 …)

    I'm我wǒ在zàiupstairs楼上lóu shàngyou,你nǐcome up上来shàng lái。

Saya di lantai atas — naiklah.

    please请qǐngstand站zhànup起来qǐ lái。

    Tolong berdiri tegak.

Ingat: 来 = menuju saya, 去 = menjauh dari saya — berpijak pada posisi si penutur. 进来 ("masuk," saya di dalam) vs 进去 ("masuk," saya di luar).

    Hati-hati

    • Dengan objek tempat, tempat tersebut berada di antara kata kerja dan 来 / 去: 回美国去 / 回美国 — jangan pernah 回去美国.

    动词 + 得 / 不 + 结果 — komplemen potensi

    English

Slot 得 ("can") or 不 ("can't") between a verb and its result to ask whether that result is achievable — 看得懂 ("can understand") vs 看不懂 ("can't"). They're built straight from result complements (懂, 完, 到, 见…).

    Structure: Verb + 得 / 不 + Complement

    you你nǐhear听tīngcan得deunderstand懂dǒngShanghainese上海话Shàng hǎi huà吗ma?

    Can you understand Shanghainese?

this kind of这种zhè zhǒngphone手机shǒu jīnow现在xiàn zàibuy买mǎican't不bùget到dào了le。

You can't get this kind of phone any more.

Remember: 得 = can, 不 = can't, wedged right after the verb (做得好 / 做不好). It asks about reaching a result — subtly different from 能 ("be allowed / have the chance to").

    Watch out

    • The negative 不 form is far more common in speech than the 得 form — you'll hear 看不懂 constantly.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Slot 得 ("bisa") atau 不 ("tidak bisa") di antara kata kerja dan hasilnya untuk bertanya apakah hasil tersebut tercapai — 看得懂 ("bisa mengerti") vs 看不懂 ("tidak bisa"). Mereka dibangun langsung dari komplemen hasil (懂, 完, 到, 见…).

    Struktur: Verb + 得 / 不 + Complement

    you你nǐhear听tīngcan得deunderstand懂dǒngShanghainese上海话Shàng hǎi huà吗ma?

Apakah kamu bisa mengerti bahasa Shanghai?

Ingat: 得 = bisa, 不 = tidak bisa, diselipkan tepat setelah kata kerja (做得好 / 做不好). Ini menanyakan tentang mencapai hasil — sedikit berbeda dengan 能 ("diperbolehkan / memiliki kesempatan").

    Hati-hati

    • Bentuk negatif 不 jauh lebih umum dalam percakapan daripada bentuk 得 — Anda akan mendengar 看不懂 terus-menerus.
    12.3

    动词 + 下去 — "lanjut …ing"

    English

The complement 下去 means carry on with something already under way — "keep …ing, go on …ing." Picture the action continuing downward and onward into the future.

Structure: Subject + Verb + 下去

    talk说shuōkeep on下去xià qù。

    Keep talking.

    you你nǐkeep再zàidrinking喝hēon下去xià qùthen就jiùdrunk醉zuì了le。

If you keep drinking, you'll get drunk.

Remember: 下去 = "carry on from here" with something already started. Its potential form 不下去 = "can't carry on": 我听不下去了 ("I can't bear to keep listening").

    Watch out

    • It's specifically about continuing — don't use it to start something.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Komplemen 下去 berarti lanjut dengan sesuatu yang sudah berjalan — "lanjut …ing, teruskan …ing." Bayangkan tindakan berlanjut ke bawah dan maju ke masa depan.

Struktur: Subject + Verb + 下去

    talk说shuōkeep on下去xià qù。

    Lanjutkan bicara.

    you你nǐkeep再zàidrinking喝hēon下去xià qùthen就jiùdrunk醉zuì了le。

Jika kamu terus minum, kamu akan mabuk.

Ingat: 下去 = "lanjut dari sini" dengan sesuatu yang sudah dimulai. Bentuk potensinya 不下去 = "tidak bisa lanjut": 我听不下去了 ("Saya tidak sanggup mendengarkan lagi").

    Hati-hati

    • Ini khusus tentang melanjutkan — jangan menggunakannya untuk memulai sesuatu.

    English

A short word right after the verb tells you how it turned out — 完 ("finished"), 好 ("done well / ready"), 错 ("wrong"). It usually takes a 了, and the object is often pulled to the front as a topic.

    Structure: Verb + 好 / 完 / 错 (+ 了)

Remember: the verb is the action, the complement is the outcome. 写 = "write," but 写错 = "wrote wrong," 写完 = "wrote to the finish." Common ones: 完, 好, 错, 懂, 到, 见, 干净, 清楚.

    Watch out

    • Negate the whole thing with 没 (没写完, "didn't finish writing"), not 不.
    Bahasa Indonesia

    Watch out

    Bahasa Indonesia

半 — "setengah" (dan di mana posisinya)

    English

The word 半 means "half." The only thing to master is where it sits relative to the measure word, and it follows one clean rule: "half a [unit]" puts 半 first; "[X] and a half" puts 半 after the measure word — exactly where the fraction lands in the English too.

    Structure: 半 + Measure Word + Noun (half a …) · Number + Measure Word + 半 + Noun (X and a half)

    half a bottle of半瓶bàn píngwine酒jiǔ

    half a bottle of wine

    three三个sān geand a half半bànhours小时xiǎo shí

    three and a half hours

Remember: 半 mirrors English word order. "Half an hour" → 半 first (半个小时); "three and a half hours" → 半 after the measure word (三个半小时). Say the English and 半 lands in the same spot.

    Watch out

    • 天 and 年 are themselves measure words — use no 个: 半天 ✓ (not 半个天), 半年 ✓.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Kata 半 berarti "setengah." Satu-satunya hal yang harus dikuasai adalah di mana posisinya relatif terhadap kata pengukur, dan mengikuti satu aturan bersih: "setengah [satuan]" menempatkan 半 pertama; "[X] dan setengah" menempatkan 半 setelah kata pengukur — tepat di tempat pecahan mendarat dalam bahasa Inggris juga.

    Struktur: 半 + Measure Word + Noun (setengah …) · Number + Measure Word + 半 + Noun (X dan setengah)

    Watch out

    Bahasa Indonesia

Untuk mengatakan tidak satupun, bangunlah penyangkalan total dan tegas: 一 + kata pengukur (+ kata benda) + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + kata kerja. 也 / 都 adalah otot di sini — inilah yang mengubah "satu" menjadi "tidak bahkan satu". Objek juga bisa ditarik ke depan sebagai topik.

    把 — "ambil dan…" (konstruksi 把)

    English

Chinese grammar's famous hurdle — but the core idea is simple. 把 literally means "take / grab," so a 把 sentence is just "take [this specific thing] and [do something] to it." Reach for it when you want to spotlight what happens to an object — where it ends up, how it's changed, what's done with it.

The trap for English speakers: the object jumps in front of the verb, and the verb can never stand alone — it must be followed by the result (a complement, 了, a location…). "把书放" lands on a Chinese ear like "put the book…" and then trailing off.

    Structure: Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + (result) Literally: "I — take — the book — put — on the table." (我把书放在桌子上。)

    please请qǐng把bǎthe door门ménclose关上guān shàng。

    Please close the door.

    she她tā把bǎmy我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīput放fàngin在zàiher bag包里bāo lǐ了le。

She put my phone in her bag.

Remember: 把 carries the hand radical 扌 — picture a hand reaching out, grabbing the object, and dragging it in front of the verb. Grab it → then say what you did to it.

    Watch out

    • The object must be specific / known (the door, my phone), and the verb must report what happened to it — a bare verb won't do: 把书放在桌子上 ✓.
    • Negation goes before 把: 别把它扔了, 没把作业做完 — never inside the 把 phrase.
    • Feeling / perception verbs (喜欢, 想, 看见, 听) can't take 把 — there's no "result" to a feeling.
    • (把 is also a measure word for handled things — 一把伞 "an umbrella" — a different word entirely.)
    Bahasa Indonesia

Hambatan terkenal tata bahasa Mandarin — tetapi ide dasarnya sederhana.

"把书放" terdengar seperti "letakkan buku…" lalu terputus.

    Struktur: Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + (result) Harfiah: "Saya — ambil — buku — letakkan — di atas meja." (我把书放在桌子上。)

    please请qǐng把bǎthe door门ménclose关上guān shàng。

    Tolong tutup pintunya.

    she她tā把bǎmy我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīput放fàngin在zàiher bag包里bāo lǐ了le。

Dia memasukkan teleponku ke dalam tasnya.

Ingat: 把 membawa radikal tangan 扌 — bayangkan tangan menjulur, menggenggam objek, dan menyeretnya ke depan kata kerja. Genggam → lalu katakan apa yang Anda lakukan padanya.

    Hati-hati

    16.4

    被 — "terlaku pada" (pasif)

    English

A 被 sentence flips the focus to the receiver: "(it) got …ed (by …)." The thing acted upon becomes the subject, and the doer is optional. Like 把, the verb can't stand bare — it needs a result — and 被 sentences lean toward unfortunate events (things done to you).

    Structure: Receiver + 被 + (Doer) + Verb + (了 / result)

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīgot被bèistolen偷tōu了le。

    My phone got stolen.

    he他tāby被bèithe police警察jǐng chácaught抓zhuā了le。

He was caught by the police.

Remember: 把 leads with the doer, 被 leads with the victim. 小偷把手机偷了 ("the thief took the phone") ↔ 手机被小偷偷了 ("the phone got taken by the thief"). 被 even hides 衣 (a quilt/cover) — picture the action laid over the subject.

    Watch out

    • The verb can't be bare — it needs a 了 or result: 咖啡被我喝完了 ✓, not 咖啡被我喝.
    • The doer is optional: 我被骗了 ("I was tricked"), doer unknown or unimportant.
    • Negate before 被: 没被发现 ("wasn't discovered").
    • These sentences usually report something bad happening to the subject.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Kalimat 被 membalik fokus ke penerima: "(benda) …-nya (oleh …)." Benda yang dikenai tindakan menjadi subjek, dan pelaku bersifat opsional. Sama seperti 把, kata kerja tidak bisa berdiri sendiri — butuh hasil — dan kalimat 被 cenderung menuju peristiwa menyesakkan (sesuatu yang dilakukan kepada Anda).

    Struktur: Receiver + 被 + (Doer) + Verb + (了 / result)

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīgot被bèistolen偷tōu了le。

    Telepon saya dicuri.

    he他tāby被bèithe police警察jǐng chácaught抓zhuā了le。

    Dia ditangkap oleh polisi.

Ingat: 把 dimulai dengan pelaku, 被 dimulai dengan korban. 小偷把手机偷了 ("pencuri mengambil telepon") ↔ 手机被小偷偷了 ("telepon diambil oleh pencuri"). 被 bahkan menutupi 衣 (selimut/tutup) — bayangkan tindakan dilewatkan di atas subjek.

    Hati-hati

    • Kata kerja tidak boleh telanjang — butuh 了 atau hasil: 咖啡被我喝完了 ✓, bukan 咖啡被我喝.
    • Pelaku bersifat opsional: 我被骗了 ("saya tertipu"), pelaku tidak diketahui atau tidak penting.
    • Negasikan sebelum 被: 没被发现 ("tidak ditemukan").
    • Kalimat-kalimat ini biasanya melaporkan sesuatu yang buruk terjadi pada subjek.

Tempat + Kata Kerja + 着 + Nama Benda — mengatakan apa di mana

    English

To paint what is where, Chinese runs place — verb — 着 — thing: "(at the place) there sits / lies / hangs a …." The verb tells you how the thing is positioned (lying, standing, hanging). A close cousin is Place + 是 + thing, meaning "all there is at the place is …."

    Structure: Place + Verb + 着 + Noun Phrase

on the table桌子上zhuō zi shànglies放fàng着zhea一本yì běnbook书shū。

There's a book lying on the table.

in the hall大厅里dà tīng lǐare standing站zhàn着zhesome一些yì xiēpolice警察jǐng chá。

Some police are standing in the hall.

Remember: the place comes first (the camera pans to a spot), then the verb + 着 freezes how the thing sits there. English starts with "there's a …"; Chinese starts with the location.

    Watch out

    • The verb is stative (放, 站, 坐, 挂) — it describes a position, not an active action.
    • The 是 version says the place holds only that: 墙上都是照片 ("the wall is all photos").
    Bahasa Indonesia

Untuk melukis apa di mana, bahasa Mandarin berjalan tempat — kata kerja — 着 — benda: "(di tempat) ada duduk / tergeletak / tergantung ...." Kata kerja memberi tahu Anda bagaimana benda tersebut diposisikan (tergeletak, berdiri, tergantung). Kerabat dekatnya adalah Tempat + 是 + benda, yang berarti "yang ada di tempat hanyalah ...."

    Struktur: Place + Verb + 着 + Noun Phrase

on the table桌子上zhuō zi shànglies放fàng着zhea一本yì běnbook书shū。

    Ada buku tergeletak di meja.

in the hall大厅里dà tīng lǐare standing站zhàn着zhesome一些yì xiēpolice警察jǐng chá。

Beberapa polisi sedang berdiri di lobi.

Ingat: tempat datang lebih dulu (kamera menyorot ke suatu titik), lalu kata kerja + 着 membekukan bagaimana benda tersebut berada di sana. Bahasa Inggris dimulai dengan "ada ...."; bahasa Mandarin dimulai dengan lokasi.

    Hati-hati

    • Kata kerja bersifat statif (放, 站, 坐, 挂) — menggambarkan posisi, bukan aksi aktif.
    • Versi 是 menyatakan tempat tersebut hanya berisi itu saja: 墙上都是照片 ("dinding penuh foto-foto").

想 + Kata Tanya + 就 + Kata Tanya — "lakukan apa pun yang kamu mau"

    English

Echo a question word on both sides of 就 and you get "(do) whatever / wherever / whenever you like." The same question word appears twice — once setting the choice, once cashing it in.

    Structure: 想 + Verb + QW + 就 + Verb + QW

    want想xiǎngeat吃chīwhat什么shén methen就jiùeat吃chīwhatever什么shén me。

    Eat whatever you want.

    want想xiǎnggo去qùwhere哪儿nǎrthen就jiùgo去qùwherever哪儿nǎr。

    Go wherever you like.

Remember: the same question word both times — 什么…就…什么, 谁…就…谁, 哪儿…就…哪儿. Read it as "whatever you pick, that's what you get." It's the language of total freedom.

    Watch out

    • Keep the question word identical on both sides — mixing 什么 with 哪儿 breaks it.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Gema kata tanya di kedua sisi 就 dan Anda akan mendapatkan "(lakukan) apa pun / di mana pun / kapan pun yang Anda suka." Kata tanya yang sama muncul dua kali — sekali menetapkan pilihan, sekali mencairkannya.

    Struktur: 想 + Verb + QW + 就 + Verb + QW

    want想xiǎngeat吃chīwhat什么shén methen就jiùeat吃chīwhatever什么shén me。

Makan apa pun yang kamu inginkan.

    want想xiǎnggo去qùwhere哪儿nǎrthen就jiùgo去qùwherever哪儿nǎr。

Pergi ke mana pun kamu mau.

Ingat: kata tanya yang sama kedua kalinya — 什么…就…什么, 谁…就…谁, 哪儿…就…哪儿. Bacalah sebagai "apa pun yang kamu pilih, itulah yang kamu dapatkan." Ini adalah bahasa kebebasan total.

    Hati-hati

    • Jaga agar kata tanya identik di kedua sisi — mencampur 什么 dengan 哪儿 akan merusaknya.
    17.3

    Kata Tanya + 都 / 也 — "semua / apa pun"

    English

A question word + 都 (or 也) sweeps over all cases — "everyone, anything, anywhere." Add a 不 / 没 and it flips to the total negative: "none, nothing, nowhere."

    Structure: Question Word + 都 / 也 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéiall都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    Everyone loves good food.

    I我wǒanything什么shén meat all都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto eat吃chī。

I don't want to eat anything.

Remember: question word + 都 = "all / every"; add 不 / 没 = "none / nothing." 谁都喜欢 ("everyone likes") → 谁都不信 ("nobody believes"). 也 stands in for 都, especially in negatives (什么也没说, "said nothing").

    Watch out

    • The question word here is not asking anything — it's the indefinite "any," swept up by 都 / 也.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Kata tanya + 都 (atau 也) menyapu seluruh kasus — "semua orang, apa pun, di mana pun." Tambahkan 不 / 没 dan itu berbalik menjadi negatif total: "tidak satu pun, tidak ada, tidak di mana pun."

    Struktur: Question Word + 都 / 也 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéiall都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    Semua orang menyukai makanan enak.

    I我wǒanything什么shén meat all都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto eat吃chī。

Saya tidak ingin makan apa pun.

Ingat: kata tanya + 都 = "semua / setiap"; tambahkan 不 / 没 = "tidak satu pun / tidak ada." 谁都喜欢 ("semua orang suka") → 谁都不信 ("tidak ada yang percaya"). 也 menggantikan 都, terutama dalam negasi (什么也没说, "tidak berkata apa-apa").

    Hati-hati

    • Kata tanya di sini tidak sedang bertanya apa pun — itu adalah "apa pun" tak tentu, yang disapu oleh 都 / 也.
    17.4

    越来越 + Adjektiva — "semakin ..."

    English

越来越 before an adjective (or verb) means a quality keeps climbing as time passes — "more and more …." Literally "more-comes-more." It usually closes with 了 to mark the change in motion.

    Structure: Subject + 越来越 + Adjective + 了

the weather天气tiān qìmore and more越来越yuè lái yuècold冷lěng了le。

The weather is getting colder and colder.

I我wǒmore and more越来越yuè lái yuèdon't不bùtrust相信xiāng xìnhim他tā了le。

I trust him less and less.

Remember: 越来越 = "more-comes-more" — one thing changing over time. Its look-alike 越…越… (previous file) links two things ("the more A, the more B"). Time → 越来越; pairing → 越…越….

    Watch out

    • With a negative verb, English flips to "less and less": 越来越不懂 ("understand less and less").
    Bahasa Indonesia

越来越 sebelum adjektiva (atau kata kerja) berarti kualitas terus naik seiring berjalannya waktu — "semakin ...." Secara harfiah "lebih-baik-lebih." Biasanya ditutup dengan 了 untuk menandai perubahan pergerakan.

    Struktur: Subject + 越来越 + Adjective + 了

the weather天气tiān qìmore and more越来越yuè lái yuècold冷lěng了le。

    Cuacanya semakin dingin dan dingin.

I我wǒmore and more越来越yuè lái yuèdon't不bùtrust相信xiāng xìnhim他tā了le。

    Saya semakin kurang percaya padanya.

Ingat: 越来越 = "lebih-baik-lebih" — satu hal berubah sepanjang waktu. Kemiripannya 越…越… (file sebelumnya) menghubungkan dua hal ("semakin A, semakin B"). Waktu → 越来越; pasangan → 越…越….

    Hati-hati

    • Dengan kata kerja negatif, bahasa Inggris berbalik menjadi "semakin sedikit": 越来越不懂 ("memahami semakin sedikit").
    17.5

Kata Tanya — "beberapa / tertentu"

    English

A bare question word can quietly mean a vague "some / a certain" — 哪儿 ("somewhere"), 谁 ("someone"), 什么 ("something"), 什么时候 ("sometime"). It isn't a question at all; tone and small cues (过, 点儿, 吧) flag the difference.

Structure: Question Word (used as "some")

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒ在zàisomewhere哪儿nǎrhave met见过jiàn guo。

I've met this person somewhere before.

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāido做zuòa bit of点儿diǎnrsomething什么shén me。

    We should do something.

Remember: a question word with no rising "question" tone = "some." 谁 ("who?") vs 谁 ("someone"); 什么 ("what?") vs 什么 ("something"). Cues like 过, 点儿, or 吧 confirm the "some" reading — 什么时候…吧 = "sometime," not "when?".

    Watch out

    • Context does the work — there's no extra word; only the falling tone and the cues distinguish "some" from a real question.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Kata tanya telanjang dapat secara diam-diam berarti "beberapa / tertentu" yang samar — 哪儿 ("di suatu tempat"), 谁 ("seseorang"), 什么 ("sesuatu"), 什么时候 ("suatu saat"). Ini sama sekali bukan pertanyaan; nada dan petunjuk kecil (过, 点儿, 吧) membedakan perbedaannya.

Struktur: Question Word (used as "some")

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒ在zàisomewhere哪儿nǎrhave met见过jiàn guo。

Saya telah bertemu orang ini di suatu tempat sebelumnya.

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāido做zuòa bit of点儿diǎnrsomething什么shén me。

    Kita harus melakukan sesuatu.

Ingat: kata tanya tanpa nada "pertanyaan" naik = "beberapa." 谁 ("siapa?") vs 谁 ("seseorang"); 什么 ("apa?") vs 什么 ("sesuatu"). Petunjuk seperti 过, 点儿, atau 吧 mengonfirmasi pembacaan "beberapa" — 什么时候…吧 = "suatu saat," bukan "kapan?"

    Hati-hati

    • Konteks yang bekerja — tidak ada kata tambahan; hanya nada turun dan petunjuk yang membedakan "beberapa" dari pertanyaan sungguhan.
    17.6

    为了 — "untuk", " demi"

    English

为了 spells out a purpose or beneficiary — "in order to, for the sake of." It usually opens the sentence ("In order to X, …"), or appears as "… 是为了 …" ("the reason is to …").

Structure: 为了 + Purpose ,Subject + Action · Action + 是为了 + Purpose

for the sake of为了wèi lemoney钱qiánhe,他tāanything什么shén meat all都dōuis willing愿意yuàn yìto do做zuò。

    For money, he'll do anything.

I我wǒ这么zhè medid this做zuò是shìin order to为了wèi lehelp帮bāngyou你nǐ。

I did all this in order to help you.

Remember: 为了 = the goal you're aiming AT (forward-looking); 因为 = the cause you're coming FROM (backward-looking). "为了 health, I exercise" (purpose) vs "因为 I'm ill, I rest" (reason). The 了 here is glued into the word — not the aspect particle.

    Watch out

    • The 为了 phrase usually sits at the front of the sentence.
    Bahasa Indonesia

为了 menjelaskan tujuan atau penerima manfaat — "untuk", "demii." Biasanya membuka kalimat ("Untuk X, …"), atau muncul sebagai "… 是为了 …" ("alasannya adalah untuk …").

Struktur: 为了 + Purpose ,Subject + Action · Action + 是为了 + Purpose

for the sake of为了wèi lemoney钱qiánhe,他tāanything什么shén meat all都dōuis willing愿意yuàn yìto do做zuò。

    跟 … 比(起来) — "dibandingkan dengan"

    English

To lead with a comparison, open with 跟 A 比(起来), then comment on B — "compared with A, B is …." It sets the yardstick first, then makes the point. (跟 ≈ 和 here; 跟 is slightly more common.) B can also start the sentence.

    Structure: 跟 + A + 比(起来) ,B + Comment

    compared with跟gēnShanghai上海Shàng hǎi比bǐmy,我wǒhometown老家lǎo jiā的deprices物价wù jiàvery很hěnlow低dī。

Compared with Shanghai, prices in my hometown are very low.

the younger sister妹妹mèi meicompared with跟gēnthe elder姐姐jiě jie比起来bǐ qǐ láia bit有点yǒu diǎnshy害羞hài xiū。

Compared with her elder sister, the younger one is a bit shy.

Remember: 跟 A 比 = "holding it up against A…" — the benchmark first, the verdict second. Note that unlike a bare 比 sentence, this framing allows 很 (物价很低), because it's a comment, not a direct A-比-B.

    Watch out

    • For a plain "A is more X than B," the basic 比 is enough: A比B高.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Untuk membuka dengan perbandingan, buka dengan 跟 A 比(起来), lalu berikan komentar tentang B — "dibandingkan dengan A, B …." Ini menetapkan patokan terlebih dahulu, kemudian membuat poin. (跟 ≈ 和 di sini; 跟 sedikit lebih umum.) B juga bisa memulai kalimat.

    Struktur: 跟 + A + 比(起来) ,B + Comment

    compared with跟gēnShanghai上海Shàng hǎi比bǐmy,我wǒhometown老家lǎo jiā的deprices物价wù jiàvery很hěnlow低dī。

Dibandingkan dengan Shanghai, harga di kampung halaman saya sangat rendah.

Dibandingkan dengan kakak perempuannya, yang muda sedikit pemalu.

Ingat: 跟 A 比 = "membandingkannya dengan A…" — patokan terlebih dahulu, vonis kedua. Perhatikan bahwa berbeda dengan kalimat 比 telanjang, kerangka ini memungkinkan penggunaan 很 (物价很低), karena ini adalah komentar, bukan perbandingan langsung A-比-B.

    Hati-hati

    • Untuk "A lebih X dari B" biasa, cukup gunakan 比 dasar: A比B高.
    18.2

    比 … 更 / 还 — "bahkan lebih"

    English

In a 比 comparison, drop 更 or 还 before the adjective to mean the first thing is even more so — often with a sly hint that "(B is already very …, and A beats it)."

    Structure: Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + 更 / 还 + Adjective

    Shanghai上海Shàng hǎithan比bǐNew York纽约Niǔ yuēpopulation人口rén kǒueven更gèngbigger多duō。

Shanghai's population is even bigger than New York's.

He's even taller than Yao Ming.

Remember: 更 / 还 = "even more." 还 especially smuggles in "(and the other is already sky-high)" — 比姚明还高 quietly admits Yao Ming is already a giant. Crucial rule: a 比 sentence never takes 很 / 非常 — degree comes from 更 / 还 / 多了.

    Watch out

    • 比 + 很 is a classic mistake: say 比他高 or 比他更高, never 比他很高.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Dalam perbandingan 比, buang 更 atau 还 sebelum kata sifat untuk berarti hal pertama bahkan lebih begitu — sering kali dengan indikasi halus bahwa "(B sudah sangat …, dan A mengalahkannya)."

    Struktur: Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + 更 / 还 + Adjective

    Shanghai上海Shàng hǎithan比bǐNew York纽约Niǔ yuēpopulation人口rén kǒueven更gèngbigger多duō。

Populasi Shanghai bahkan lebih besar daripada New York.

    he他tāthan比bǐYao Ming姚明Yáo Míngeven还háitaller高gāo。

Dia bahkan lebih tinggi dari Yao Ming.

Ingat: 更 / 还 = "bahkan lebih." 还 terutama menyelipkan makna "(dan yang lain sudah sangat tinggi)" — 比姚明还高 secara diam-diam mengakui Yao Ming sudah merupakan raksasa. Aturan penting: kalimat 比 tidak pernah mengambil 很 / 非常 — tingkatannya berasal dari 更 / 还 / 多了.

    Hati-hati

    • 比 + 很 adalah kesalahan klasik: katakan 比他高 atau 比他更高, jangan pernah 比他很高.
    18.3

    比 … 形容词 + 多了 — "jauh lebih"

    English

To stress a big gap, close a 比 comparison with 多了 (or 得多 / 很多) — "much more …." 多了 also works on its own: 好多了 ("much better").

    Structure: Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + Adjective + 多了 / 得多 / 很多

Remember: size the gap at the end: big gap → 多了 / 得多 / 很多; small gap → 一点 (容易一点, "a little easier"). And, again, never 很 / 非常 inside a 比 sentence.

    Watch out

    • 多了 / 得多 / 很多 all sit after the adjective: 高多了, 高得多 — never 多了高.
    Bahasa Indonesia

    Hati-hati

    A + 有 + B + 形容词 + 吗? — "se-…-as?"

    English

有 can do more than "have" — in a comparison it means "as … as": "A 有 B + Adj" = "A is as [Adj] as B." It lives mostly in questions, where B is the benchmark you're measuring against, often with 这么 / 那么.

    Structure: A + 有 + B + (这么 / 那么) + Adjective + 吗?

    he他tāas有yǒume我wǒhandsome帅shuài吗ma?

Is he as handsome as me?

    he他tāas有yǒuYao Ming姚明Yáo Míngthat那么nà metall高gāo吗ma?

Is he really as tall as Yao Ming?

Remember: 有 = "reaches as far as" (as … as); 没有 = "falls short of" (not as … as). The question 有…吗? asks "does A measure up to B?"; the answer is 有 / 没有 (没有你帅, "not as handsome as you").

    Watch out

    • Used mainly in questions and negatives, not plain statements. For a plain statement use 跟…一样 ("the same as") or 比 ("more than").
    Bahasa Indonesia

有 dapat melakukan lebih dari sekadar "mempunyai" — dalam perbandingan, artinya "se-…-as": "A 有 B + Adj" = "A se-[Adj] as B." Ini hidup terutama dalam pertanyaan, di mana B adalah patokan yang kamu bandingkan, sering kali dengan 这么 / 那么.

    Struktur: A + 有 + B + (这么 / 那么) + Adjective + 吗?

    he他tāas有yǒume我wǒhandsome帅shuài吗ma?

    Apakah dia tampan sepertiku?

    he他tāas有yǒuYao Ming姚明Yáo Míngthat那么nà metall高gāo吗ma?

Apakah dia benar-benar setinggi Yao Ming?

Ingat: 有 = "mencapai sejauh" (se-…-as); 没有 = "gagal mencapai" (tidak se-…-as). Pertanyaan 有…吗? bertanya "apakah A setara dengan B?"; jawabannya adalah 有 / 没有 (没有你帅, "tidak se-tampan-mu").

除了 … (以外) — "kecuali" atau "selain"

    English

Here's a word that means two opposite things depending on its partner. 除了 X (以外) sets X aside; then the adverb in the second clause decides what happens to it. With 都, X is left out ("everyone except X"); with 还 / 也, X is kept and more is piled on ("besides X, also …"). The 以外 is optional.

    Watch out

    如果 … 的话 — "jika"

    English

如果 … 的话 wraps a condition — "if …." Think of 的话 as a spoken bracket that closes the if-clause: 如果 opens it, 的话 shuts it. The 的话 is conversational and optional — and it can even appear with no 如果 at all.

    Structure: 如果 + Condition + 的话 ,(就) + Result

if如果rú guǒtomorrow明天míng tiānrains下雨xià yǔ的话de huàwe,我们wǒ menthen就jiùnot不bùgo去qù了le。

If you don't feel like going, then don't.

Remember: 如果 and 的话 are a pair of brackets around the condition — and Chinese lets you use either or both. You can even drop both and just imply the "if": 有事给我打电话 ("call me if anything comes up").

    Watch out

    • 的话 is conversational — fine to drop it and keep just 如果 … 就 ….
    Bahasa Indonesia

如果 … 的话 membungkus kondisi — "jikaadiator...." Anggap 的话 sebagai kurung bicara yang menutup klausa jika: 如果 membukanya, 的话 menutupnya. 的话 bersifat percakapan dan opsional — dan bahkan bisa muncul tanpa 如果 sama sekali.

    Struktur: 如果 + Condition + 的话 ,(就) + Result

if如果rú guǒtomorrow明天míng tiānrains下雨xià yǔ的话de huàwe,我们wǒ menthen就jiùnot不bùgo去qù了le。

Ingat: 如果 dan 的话 adalah pasangan kurung di sekitar kondisi — dan bahasa Mandarin memungkinkan Anda menggunakan salah satu atau keduanya. Anda bahkan bisa membuang keduanya dan hanya menyiratkan "jika": 有事给我打电话 ("telepon saya jika ada sesuatu").

    Hati-hati

    • 的话 bersifat percakapan — boleh membuangnya dan cukup gunakan 如果 … 就 ….
    19.3

    如果 … 就 … — "jika … maka …"

    English

The backbone conditional is 如果 … 就 … — "if A, then B." The key placement rule: 就 lives in the second clause, opening the result — not next to 如果.

    Structure: 如果 + Condition ,就 + Result

    if如果rú guǒhave有yǒudifficulty困难kùn nánthen,就jiù给gěime我wǒcall打电话dǎ diàn huà。

If you run into any trouble, then call me.

    if如果rú guǒhe他tāknew知道zhī dàothen,那nàhe他tāsurely一定yí dìngwould会huìtell告诉gào sume我wǒ。

If he knew, he'd surely tell me.

Remember: 如果 opens the "if," 就 opens the "then" — and 就 always rides with the result, hugging its verb. 那(么) can stand in for 就 with an "in that case" flavour.

    Watch out

    • Don't park 就 next to 如果 — it belongs in the second clause, before its verb.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Kondisional tulang punggung adalah 如果 … 就 … — "jika A, maka B." Aturan penempatan kunci: 就 berada di klausa kedua, membuka hasil — bukan berdampingan dengan 如果.

    Struktur: 如果 + Condition ,就 + Result

    if如果rú guǒhave有yǒudifficulty困难kùn nánthen,就jiù给gěime我wǒcall打电话dǎ diàn huà。

Jika kamu menemui masalah apa pun, maka telepon saya.

    if如果rú guǒhe他tāknew知道zhī dàothen,那nàhe他tāsurely一定yí dìngwould会huìtell告诉gào sume我wǒ。

Jika dia tahu, dia pasti akan memberi tahu saya.

Ingat: 如果 membuka "jika", 就 membuka "maka" — dan 就 selalu mengikuti hasil, merangkul kata kerja-nya. 那(么) dapat menggantikan 就 dengan nuansa "dalam kasus itu".

    Hati-hati

    • Jangan tempatkan 就 bersebelahan dengan 如果 — ia berada di klausa kedua, sebelum kata kerja-nya.

    不但 … 而且 … — "tidak hanya … tetapi juga …"

    English

不但 … 而且 … stacks a second, stronger point on the first — "not only A, but also B." The two halves share the same subject, and B should push further than A (more extreme, more surprising).

    Structure: Subject + 不但 + A ,而且 + B

this这个zhè gething东西dōng xinot only不但bú dànexpensive贵guìbut also,而且ér qiěhard难nánto buy买mǎi。

This thing is not only expensive, but also hard to get.

this这道zhè dàodish菜càinot only不但bú dànpretty好看hǎo kànalso,也yětasty好吃hǎo chī。

This dish isn't only pretty, it's tasty too.

    Remember: 不但 = "not only," 而且 = "but also," and B must out-do A (escalate, don't just repeat). 而且 swaps freely for 也 / 还: 不但…也…, 不但…还….

    Watch out

    • Keep one subject across both halves (他不但…,而且…); if the subject changes, 不但 moves in front of the subject (不但他来了,而且…).
    Bahasa Indonesia

不但 … 而且 … menumpuk poin kedua yang lebih kuat di atas yang pertama — "tidak hanya A, tetapi juga B." Kedua bagian berbagi subjek yang sama, dan B harus mendorong lebih jauh dari A (lebih ekstrem, lebih mengejutkan).

    Struktur: Subject + 不但 + A ,而且 + B

this这个zhè gething东西dōng xinot only不但bú dànexpensive贵guìbut also,而且ér qiěhard难nánto buy买mǎi。

Barang ini tidak hanya mahal, tetapi juga sulit didapat.

this这道zhè dàodish菜càinot only不但bú dànpretty好看hǎo kànalso,也yětasty好吃hǎo chī。

Hidangan ini tidak hanya cantik, rasanya juga enak.

Ingat: 不但 = "tidak hanya," 而且 = "tetapi juga," dan B harus lebih tinggi dari A (meningkat, jangan sekadar mengulang). 而且 dapat digantikan secara bebas oleh 也 / 还: 不但…也…, 不但…还….

    Hati-hati

    • Pertahankan satu subjek di kedua bagian (他不但…,而且…); jika subjek berubah, 不但 berpindah ke depan subjek (不但他来了,而且…).

    才 vs 就 — "terlambat / sulit" vs "awal / mudah"

    English

These two adverbs are a matched pair pulling in opposite directions. Both sit before the verb after a time or condition, but 才 says something happened later or with more effort than expected (often a touch impatient), while 就 says it happened sooner or more easily than expected.

the boss老板lǎo bǎneleven十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáiarrived到dào。

The boss didn't get in until eleven.

    he他tāsix六点liù diǎnalready就jiùarrived到dào了le。

He was already here by six.

Remember: 才 drags late (no 了); 就 jumps early (+ 了). A neat tell: the 了 lines up with 就 ("already happened, 就到了") and avoids 才 ("late, nothing tidily completed, 才到").

    Watch out

    • 才 = slower / later / harder than expected (sometimes annoyed); 就 = faster / earlier / easier.
    • The verb after 才 takes no 了; 就 in the "already" sense usually does.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Kedua kata keterangan ini adalah pasangan yang menarik ke arah yang berlawanan. Keduanya berada sebelum kata kerja setelah waktu atau kondisi, tetapi 才 menyatakan sesuatu terjadi lebih lambat atau dengan usaha lebih besar dari perkiraan (sering kali sedikit kesal), sementara 就 menyatakan hal itu terjadi lebih cepat atau lebih mudah dari perkiraan.

the boss老板lǎo bǎneleven十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáiarrived到dào。

Pembos tidak masuk sampai jam sebelas.

    he他tāsix六点liù diǎnalready就jiùarrived到dào了le。

Dia sudah ada di sini pada jam enam.

Ingat: 才 menunda keterlambatan (tanpa 了); 就 melompat awal (+ 了). Petunjuk yang jelas: 了 bersebelahan dengan 就 ("sudah terjadi, 就到了") dan menghindari 才 ("terlambat, tidak selesai dengan rapi, 才到").

    Hati-hati

    • 才 = lebih lambat / terlambat / lebih berat dari perkiraan (kadang kesal); 就 = lebih cepat / lebih awal / lebih mudah.
    • Kata kerja setelah 才 tidak mengambil 了; 就 dalam arti "sudah" biasanya mengambilnya.
    20.2

刚 vs 刚才 — kata keterangan vs kata waktu

    English

Same "just," two different word-classes. 刚 is an adverb ("just," sitting right before the verb); 刚才 is a time noun ("a moment ago," roughly the last 1–30 minutes) that can stand on its own and even modify a noun.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnjust刚gāngleft走zǒu。

    The boss just left.

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    What did you just say?

Remember: 刚 = adverb, glued to the verb (刚到); 刚才 = noun, free-standing (刚才的事, "the thing just now"). 刚 often skips 了 when the verb already carries a result; 刚才 is firmly past and pairs with 了.

    Watch out

    • Before an adjective, only 刚 / 刚刚 works: 天刚晴 ("the sky just cleared") — never 刚才晴.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Arti "baru saja" yang sama, dua kelas kata berbeda. 刚 adalah kata keterangan ("baru saja", menempel tepat sebelum kata kerja); 刚才 adalah kata benda waktu ("beberapa saat yang lalu", kurang lebih 1–30 menit terakhir) yang dapat berdiri sendiri dan bahkan memodifikasi kata benda.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnjust刚gāngleft走zǒu。

    Pembos baru saja pergi.

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

Apa yang baru saja kamu katakan?

Ingat: 刚 = kata keterangan, melekat pada kata kerja (刚到); 刚才 = kata benda, berdiri bebas (刚才的事, "hal beberapa saat yang lalu"). 刚 sering melewatkan 了 ketika kata kerja sudah membawa hasil; 刚才 pasti masa lalu dan berpasangan dengan 了.

    Hati-hati

    • Sebelum kata sifat, hanya 刚 / 刚刚 yang bisa digunakan: 天刚晴 ("langit baru saja cerah") — tidak pernah 刚才晴.

有点 vs 一点 — "sedikit sekali/terlalu" vs "sedikit (lagi)"

    English

Both translate as "a bit," but they sit on opposite sides of the adjective and carry opposite moods. 有点(儿) goes before an adjective with a hint of complaint ("a bit too …"); 一点(儿) goes after an adjective to mark a small amount or degree (in comparisons or requests).

    today今天jīn tiānI'm我wǒa bit有点yǒu diǎntired累lèi。

    I'm a bit tired today.

    please请qǐngspeak说shuōslowly慢màna little一点yì diǎn。

Please speak a little more slowly.

Remember: 有点 + Adj = a grumble before ("a bit too tired"); Adj + 一点 = a measured amount after ("a little slower"). Position tells you the mood: before = complaint, after = neutral nudge.

    Watch out

    • 一点 + Noun = "a little (of)": 一点水, 一点钱 — 有点 can't do this.
    • 一点也不 / 一点也没 = "not at all": 一点也不辣.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Keduanya diterjemahkan sebagai "sedikit", tetapi mereka berada di sisi yang berlawanan dari kata sifat dan membawa nuansa yang berlawanan. 有点(儿) diletakkan sebelum kata sifat dengan indikasi keluhan ("sedikit sekali …"); 一点(儿) diletakkan setelah kata sifat untuk menandai jumlah atau tingkat kecil (dalam perbandingan atau permintaan).

    today今天jīn tiānI'm我wǒa bit有点yǒu diǎntired累lèi。

    Saya sedikit lelah hari ini.

    please请qǐngspeak说shuōslowly慢màna little一点yì diǎn。

    Mohon bicara sedikit lebih lambat.

Ingat: 有点 + Adj = keluhan sebelum ("sedikit terlalu lelah"); Adj + 一点 = jumlah terukur setelah ("sedikit lebih lambat"). Posisi memberi tahu suasana hati: sebelum = keluhan, setelah = sentakan netral.

    Hati-hati

    • 一点 + Noun = "sedikit (dari)": 一点水, 一点钱 — 有点 tidak bisa melakukan ini.
    • 一点也不 / 一点也没 = "sama sekali tidak": 一点也不辣.

再 vs 又 — "lagi" masa depan vs masa lalu

    English

Both mean "again," but they split cleanly on time: 再 is "again" for something not yet done (a future or intended repeat); 又 is "again" for something that has already happened.

    welcome欢迎huān yíngagain再zàicome来lái!

    Come again!

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    You're late again.

Remember: 再 looks forward (plan/intend, no 了); 又 looks back (already repeated, usually + 了). 欢迎再来 (please come again) vs 你又来了 (here you are again). The 了 sides with 又.

    Watch out

    • 再 also means "another" (再来一个) and "(do A) then (B)" (先…再…); 又 also stacks qualities (又高又帅).
    Bahasa Indonesia

Keduanya berarti "lagi", tetapi terbagi tegas pada waktu: 再 adalah "lagi" untuk sesuatu yang belum dilakukan (pengulangan di masa depan atau yang direncanakan); 又 adalah "lagi" untuk sesuatu yang sudah terjadi.

    welcome欢迎huān yíngagain再zàicome来lái!

    Datang lagi!

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    Kamu terlambat lagi.

Ingat: 再 melihat ke depan (rencana/niat, tanpa 了); 又 melihat ke belakang (sudah berulang, biasanya + 了). 欢迎再来 (mohon datang lagi) vs 你又来了 (kamu datang lagi). 了 berpihak pada 又.

    Hati-hati

    • 再 juga berarti "lainnya" (再来一个) dan "(lakukan A) kemudian (B)" (先…再…); 又 juga menggabungkan kualitas (又高又帅).

还是 vs 或者 — "atau" dalam pertanyaan vs pernyataan

    English

This is the single most-tested "or" distinction in Chinese, so make it automatic. Both words mean "or" and present a choice, but they split by sentence type: 还是 offers the choice in a question (you're asking someone to pick); 或者 lists alternatives in a statement (you're just telling).

    you你nǐdrink喝hētea茶cháor还是hái shìcoffee咖啡kā fēi?

Do you want tea or coffee?

    tea茶cháor或者huò zhěcoffee咖啡kā fēieither都dōuis fine行xíng。

Tea or coffee — either's fine.

    I我wǒdon't不bùknow知道zhī dàohe他tāsupports支持zhī chíor还是hái shìopposes反对fǎn duì。

I don't know whether he's for or against.

Remember: ? → 还是, . → 或者. Asking someone to choose takes 还是; stating open options takes 或者. And a hidden question — "I don't know whether A or B" — still counts as a question inside, so it keeps 还是.

    Watch out

    • That embedded-question case (不知道…还是…) trips people up — there's no question mark, but the choice is still being asked, so 还是 stays.
    Bahasa Indonesia

Ini adalah perbedaan "atau" paling banyak diuji dalam bahasa Tionghoa, jadi jadikan otomatis. Kedua kata berarti "atau" dan menawarkan pilihan, tetapi terbagi berdasarkan jenis kalimat: 还是 menawarkan pilihan dalam pertanyaan (Anda meminta seseorang memilih); 或者 mencantumkan alternatif dalam pernyataan (Anda hanya memberi tahu).

    you你nǐdrink喝hētea茶cháor还是hái shìcoffee咖啡kā fēi?

Apakah Anda ingin teh atau kopi?

    tea茶cháor或者huò zhěcoffee咖啡kā fēieither都dōuis fine行xíng。

Teh atau kopi — keduanya boleh.

    I我wǒdon't不bùknow知道zhī dàohe他tāsupports支持zhī chíor还是hái shìopposes反对fǎn duì。

Saya tidak tahu apakah dia mendukung atau menentang.

Ingat: ? → 还是, . → 或者. Meminta seseorang memilih menggunakan 还是; menyatakan opsi terbuka menggunakan 或者. Dan pertanyaan tersembunyi — "Saya tidak tahu apakah A atau B" — masih dianggap sebagai pertanyaan di dalamnya, sehingga tetap menggunakan 还是.

    Hati-hati

    • Kasus pertanyaan tertanam (不知道…还是…) sering menjebak orang — tidak ada tanda tanya, tetapi pilihannya tetap sedang ditanyakan, sehingga 还是 tetap digunakan.

以后 vs 然后 vs 后来 — tiga jenis "setelah / kemudian"

    English

All three brush against "after / then," but each owns a different slot — so the trick is to match the situation to the word:

    • 以后 — "after / from now on," and it can point to the future: 以后想开公司 ("I want to start a company someday").
    • 然后 — "and then," joining the next step in a sequence (any time frame): 先吃饭,然后看电影.
    • 后来 — "later, afterwards," narrating the next thing that happened — in the past only.

I我wǒin future以后yǐ hòuwant to想xiǎngstart开kāia company公司gōng sī。

I want to start a company someday.

first先xiāneat吃饭chī fànand then,然后rán hòuwatch看kàna film电影diàn yǐng。

Eat first, and then watch a film.

    later后来hòu láihe他tāwent去qù了lethe US美国Měi guó。

Later he went to the US.

Remember: the quick test — future → 以后, next step → 然后, past story → 后来. Only 后来 is locked to the past; 以后 can reach into the future, and 然后 chains steps in any time frame.

    Watch out

    • 以后 and 后来 can both translate as "later," but 后来 only narrates what has already happened — never a future "then."
    Bahasa Indonesia

I我wǒin future以后yǐ hòuwant to想xiǎngstart开kāia company公司gōng sī。

Saya ingin membuka perusahaan suatu hari nanti.

first先xiāneat吃饭chī fànand then,然后rán hòuwatch看kàna film电影diàn yǐng。

Makanlah dulu, dan kemudian menonton film.

    later后来hòu láihe他tāwent去qù了lethe US美国Měi guó。

    Kemudian dia pergi ke AS.

Ingat: uji cepatnya — masa depan → 以后, langkah berikutnya → 然后, cerita masa lalu → 后来. Hanya 后来 yang terkunci pada masa lalu; 以后 dapat mencapai masa depan, dan 然后 merangkai langkah dalam rentang waktu apa pun.

    Hati-hati

    • 以后 dan 后来 keduanya dapat diterjemahkan sebagai "kemudian", tetapi 后来 hanya menceritakan apa yang telah terjadi — tidak pernah "kemudian" untuk masa depan.
