    1.1

形容词 + 极了 — "…to the max" (极了)

    English

When something is off the charts — the best, the worst, the most you've ever seen — tack 极了 (jíle) onto the adjective. 极 means "the furthest point, the extreme" (it's the 极 of 北极, the North Pole), so 好极了 reads literally as "good — all the way to the pole." It works for praise and complaints alike, and it lives in casual, spoken Chinese.

Unusually for a degree phrase, 极了 clamps straight onto the adjective with no 得 — and the 了 is welded on: drop it and the sentence is simply wrong.

Structure: Subject + Adjective + 极了 Literally: "[subject is] adjective — to the extreme."

    this这个zhè geidea主意zhǔ yigood好hǎoextremely极了jí le。

    This idea is perfect.

the college exam高考gāo kǎothat day那天nà tiānI,我wǒnervous紧张jǐn zhāngextremely极了jí le。

I was incredibly nervous on the day of the gaokao.

    that那个nà geboy男孩nán háiannoying讨厌tǎo yànextremely极了jí le!

    That boy is unbelievably annoying!

Remember: 极 = pole, the furthest point (北极 = North Pole). 好极了 pushes "good" all the way to the pole — and 极 never travels without its 了.

    Watch out

    • The 了 is non-negotiable: 好极了 ✓, never 好极.
    • No 得 — it attaches bare (好极了), unlike most degree complements (好得很).
    • 极了 already carries the emphasis, so don't pile on 很 or 非常: 好极了, never 很好极了.

Estructura: Subject + Adjective + 极了 Literalmente: "[sujeto es] adjetivo — hasta el extremo."

    this这个zhè geidea主意zhǔ yigood好hǎoextremely极了jí le。

    Esta idea es perfecta.

the college exam高考gāo kǎothat day那天nà tiānI,我wǒnervous紧张jǐn zhāngextremely极了jí le。

Estaba increíblemente nervioso el día del examen de ingreso a la universidad.

    that那个nà geboy男孩nán háiannoying讨厌tǎo yànextremely极了jí le!

    ¡Ese chico es insoportablemente molesto!

Recuerda: 极 = polo, el punto más lejano (北极 = Polo Norte). 好极了 empuja "bueno" hasta el polo — y 极 nunca viaja sin su 了.

    Precaución

    • El 了 es obligatorio: 好极了 ✓, nunca 好极.
    • Sin 得 — se une desnudo (好极了), a diferencia de la mayoría de los complementos de grado (好得很).
    • 极了 ya lleva la énfasis inherente, así que no apiles 很 o 非常: 好极了, nunca 很好极了.
    1.2

形容词重叠 — duplicar adjetivos para dar calidez (AA / AABB)

    English

Repeat an adjective and it turns soft, warm, and vivid — less a cold fact, more a fond little picture. This doubling runs all through friendly, natural Chinese, especially for physical descriptions: colours, sizes, shapes.

A one-syllable adjective doubles as AA, usually with 的 before the noun — 大 ("big") → 大大的 ("nice and big, big and round"):

    Structure: A + A + 的 (+ Noun)

the baby宝宝bǎo bao的deeyes眼睛yǎn jīngbig and round大大的dà dà de。

The baby has big, round eyes.

tonight今晚jīn wǎn的demoon月亮yuè liàngnice and round圆圆的yuán yuán de。

The moon is lovely and round tonight.

A two-syllable adjective doubles as AABB — repeat each character, not the whole word: 高兴 → 高高兴兴, 干净 → 干干净净, 舒服 → 舒舒服服. Used as an adverb, the AABB form takes 地 before the verb:

I我wǒwant to想xiǎngcomfortably舒舒服服shū shū fú fú地delie躺tǎngon在zàithe sofa沙发上shā fā shàng。

I just want to lie comfortably on the sofa.

Remember: doubling softens and warms — 大大的眼睛 isn't a flat "big eyes," it's the affectionate "lovely big eyes" a parent would coo. AA + 的 paints a noun; AABB + 地 colours a verb.

    Watch out

    • Not every adjective doubles — 好吃, 便宜, 麻烦 are never said as 好好吃吃 / 便便宜宜. Stick to common physical descriptors until you've heard a form used for real.
    • A doubled adjective is already emphatic — never put 很 in front (很慢慢 is wrong).
    Español

Repite un adjetivo y este se vuelve suave, cálido y vívido — menos un dato frío, más una pequeña imagen cariñosa. Esta duplicación es común en el chino amable y natural, especialmente para descripciones físicas: colores, tamaños, formas.

Un adjetivo de un solo sílabo se duplica como AA, generalmente con 的 antes del sustantivo — 大 ("grande") → 大大的 ("muy grande, grande y redondeado"):

    Estructura: A + A + 的 (+ Noun)

the baby宝宝bǎo bao的deeyes眼睛yǎn jīngbig and round大大的dà dà de。

El bebé tiene ojos grandes y redondos.

tonight今晚jīn wǎn的demoon月亮yuè liàngnice and round圆圆的yuán yuán de。

La luna está preciosa y redonda esta noche.

Un adjetivo de dos sílabas se duplica como AABB — repite cada carácter, no toda la palabra: 高兴 → 高高兴兴, 干净 → 干干净净, 舒服 → 舒舒服服. Usado como adverbio, la forma AABB lleva 地 antes del verbo:

I我wǒwant to想xiǎngcomfortably舒舒服服shū shū fú fú地delie躺tǎngon在zàithe sofa沙发上shā fā shàng。

    English

To say how an action is done, park the particle 地 (de) after an adjective — it is Chinese's "-ly." 高兴 ("happy") → 高兴地 ("happily"); 认真 ("careful") → 认真地 ("carefully"). The adverb always sits in front of the verb.

    Structure: Adjective + 地 + Verb Literally: "happy-ly — smiled."

    he他tāhappy高兴gāo xìng地desmiled笑xiào了le。

    He smiled happily.

the teacher老师lǎo shīcareful认真rèn zhēn地deread看kàn了lemy我的wǒ deessay作文zuò wén。

The teacher read my essay carefully.

Remember: 地 = "-ly". Three de's sound identical but split the work: 的 owns a noun (我的书), 地 drives a verb (慢慢地走), 得 rates the result (跑得快). The 地 here even carries 土 "earth" on its left — picture an adverb grounding how the verb is done.

    Watch out

    • This 地 is read de, not dì — same sound as 的 and 得, different job.
    • The adverb phrase comes before the verb, never after it.
    Español

Para decir cómo se realiza una acción, coloca la partícula 地 (de) después de un adjetivo — es el equivalente chino al "-ly". 高兴 ("feliz") → 高兴地 ("felizmente"); 认真 ("cuidadoso") → 认真地 ("cuidadosamente"). El adverbio siempre va delante del verbo.

    Estructura: Adjective + 地 + Verb Literalmente: "feliz-mente — sonreír."

    he他tāhappy高兴gāo xìng地desmiled笑xiào了le。

    Él sonrió felizmente.

the teacher老师lǎo shīcareful认真rèn zhēn地deread看kàn了lemy我的wǒ deessay作文zuò wén。

El profesor leyó mi ensayo cuidadosamente.

Recuerda: 地 = "-ly". Los tres de suenan igual pero dividen las tareas: 的 pertenece a un sustantivo (我的书), 地 modifica un verbo (慢慢地走), 得 califica el resultado (跑得快). Incluso este 地 lleva 土 ("tierra") en su lado izquierdo — imagina un adverbio asentando cómo se realiza la acción del verbo.

    Precaución

    • Este 地 se pronuncia de, no dì — mismo sonido que 的 y 得, diferente función.
    • La frase adverbial va antes del verbo, nunca después.

    2.1

    又 + 动词 + 了 — "(hizo) de nuevo" (en el pasado)

    English

Something already happened one more time? Reach for 又 (yòu) — "again, once more." It looks backward at a repeat that's done, and it often carries a flick of annoyance, like English "again?!" (For "again" in the future, you want 再 instead — see the contrast below.)

    Structure: (Subject +) 又 + Verb + 了 Literally: "again — [verb] — (and it's happened)."

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    You're late again.

    again又yòurain下雨xià yǔ了le!

    It's raining again!

    today今天jīn tiānagain又yòuhave to要yàowork overtime加班jiā bān了le!

We've got to work overtime again today!

Remember: 又 looks back, 再 looks forward. 又来了 = "here we go again" (it happened); 再来一次 = "do it once more" (it will). Future 再 takes no 了; past 又 needs it.

    Watch out

    • 又 also works with negatives: 他又没来 ("he didn't come again").
    • For something about to repeat, pair it with 要: 又要…了 ("here it comes again").
    Español

¿Algo ya pasó una vez más? Apúntate a 又 (yòu) — "de nuevo, otra vez". Su mirada es hacia atrás en una repetición que ya ocurrió, y a menudo lleva un toque de molestia, como en inglés "¡otra vez?!". Para "de nuevo" en el futuro, necesitas 再 en su lugar — consulta la comparación más abajo.

    Estructura: (Subject +) 又 + Verb + 了 Literalmente: "de nuevo — [verbo] — (y ha sucedido)."

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    Tienes retraso de nuevo.

    again又yòurain下雨xià yǔ了le!

    ¡Está lloviendo de nuevo!

    today今天jīn tiānagain又yòuhave to要yàowork overtime加班jiā bān了le!

¡Hoy tenemos que trabajar horas extra de nuevo!

Recuerda: 又 mira hacia atrás, 再 mira hacia adelante. 又来了 = "aquí viene de nuevo" (ya pasó); 再来一次 = "hazlo una vez más" (lo hará). El futuro 再 no lleva 了; el pasado 又 lo necesita.

    Precaución

    • 又 también funciona con negaciones: 他又没来 ("no vino de nuevo").
    • Para algo que está a punto de repetirse, úsalo con 要: 又要…了 ("aquí viene de nuevo").
    2.2

    一直 — "siempre, continuamente"

    English

一直 is literally "one straight (line)" — picture a single, unbroken line drawn through time. It describes an action or state that runs non-stop over a stretch — "continuously, the whole time, all along." English often lands it as "always."

Structure: Subject + 一直 + Predicate Literally: "in one straight line, [predicate]."

    I我wǒall along一直yì zhívery很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanyou你nǐ。

    I've liked you all along.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnalways一直yì zhívery很hěnbusy忙máng。

    The boss is always busy.

eighteen十八岁shí bā suìafter以后yǐ hòuhe,他tāhas … ever since一直yì zhíalone一个人yí ge rénlived住zhù。

Since he was eighteen, he's lived alone the whole time.

Remember: 一直 = one straight line through time — no breaks. It's unbroken duration; for a repeating habit ("always does X"), switch to 总是.

    Watch out

    • It often pairs with 在 (一直在学习) or 都 (一直都不抽烟).
    • 一直走 also means "go straight ahead" — the same "straight line" idea, in space.
    Español

一直 significa literalmente "una línea recta" — imagina una sola línea ininterrumpida dibujada a través del tiempo. Describe una acción o estado que transcurre sin pausa durante un periodo — "continuosamente, todo el tiempo, siempre". En inglés suele traducirse como "always".

Estructura: Subject + 一直 + Predicate Literalmente: "en una línea recta, [predicado]."

    I我wǒall along一直yì zhívery很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanyou你nǐ。

    Siempre te he gustado.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnalways一直yì zhívery很hěnbusy忙máng。

    El jefe siempre está ocupado.

eighteen十八岁shí bā suìafter以后yǐ hòuhe,他tāhas … ever since一直yì zhíalone一个人yí ge rénlived住zhù。

Desde los dieciocho años, ha vivido solo todo este tiempo.

Recuerda: 一直 = una línea recta a través del tiempo — sin interrupciones. Es una duración ininterrumpida; para un hábito repetitivo ("siempre hace X"), cambia a 总是.

    Precaución

    • A menudo se combina con 在 (一直在学习) o 都 (一直都不抽烟).
    • 一直走 también significa "seguir recto" — la misma idea de "línea recta", pero en espacio.
    2.3

    总是 — "siempre" (un hábito)

    English

总是 is "always" in the sense of a habit or consistent pattern — something that just keeps recurring. 总 means "all in all, in every case," so 总是 says "in every case, it's like this." It's neutral in tone and sits before the verb.

    Structure: Subject + 总是 + Verb · with an adjective: 总是 + 很 / 特别 + Adj

    he他tāalways总是zǒng shìlate迟到chí dào。

    He's always late.

    your你nǐhome家jiāalways总是zǒng shìvery很hěnclean干净gān jìng。

Your home is always so clean.

Remember: 总 = "in every case." 总是 is the neutral "always" (a pattern); its grumbling twin 老是 (below) adds the eye-roll.

    Watch out

    • Before an adjective you must add a degree word: 总是很累 ✓, not 总是累.
    • 总是 = a recurring habit; 一直 = one unbroken stretch. "He's always late" (each time) is 总是; "it rained the whole time" is 一直.
    Español

总是 es "siempre" en el sentido de un hábito o patrón consistente — algo que simplemente sigue repitiéndose. 总 significa "en general, en todos los casos", así que 总是 dice "en todos los casos, es así". Tiene un tono neutro y va antes del verbo.

    Estructura: Subject + 总是 + Verb · con adjetivo: 总是 + 很 / 特别 + Adj

    he他tāalways总是zǒng shìlate迟到chí dào。

    Siempre llega tarde.

    your你nǐhome家jiāalways总是zǒng shìvery很hěnclean干净gān jìng。

Tu casa siempre está tan limpia.

Recuerda: 总 = "en todos los casos". 总是 es el "siempre" neutro (un patrón); su gemelo quejumbroso 老是 (más abajo) añade el ceceo.

    Precaución

    • Antes de un adjetivo debes añadir una palabra de grado: 总是很累 ✓, no 总是累.
    • 总是 = un hábito recurrente; 一直 = un periodo ininterrumpido. "Siempre llega tarde" (cada vez) es 总是; "llovió todo el tiempo" es 一直.
    2.4

    终于 — "finalmente, por fin"

    English

终于 marks something finally happening after a long wait — and it glows with relief or joy. 终 is "the end / finish line" (the 终 of 终点), so 终于 is "at the finish line, it came." Unlike English "finally," it can't stand alone, move to the front, or end a sentence — and it must team up with 了.

    Structure: Subject + 终于 + Predicate + 了

    you你nǐfinally终于zhōng yúarrived到dào了le!

    You're finally here!

    the homework作业zuò yèfinally终于zhōng yúdone做zuòfinished完wán了le!

    I've finally finished the homework!

Remember: 终 = the finish line you've been straining toward — 终于 is the sigh of relief as you cross it, always sealed with 了.

    Watch out

    • The 了 is obligatory — 终于…了; never 终于 bare like English "finally" on its own.
    • It implies a welcome outcome. For a flat, neutral "in the end," use 最后.
    Español

终于 marca algo que por fin ocurre después de mucho esperar — y brilla con alivio o alegría. 终 significa "el final / la meta" (el 终 de 终点), así que 终于 es "en la meta, llegó". A diferencia del inglés "finally", no puede ir solo, moverse al principio ni terminar una oración — y debe acompañarse de 了.

    Estructura: Subject + 终于 + Predicate + 了

    you你nǐfinally终于zhōng yúarrived到dào了le!

    ¡Por fin llegas!

    the homework作业zuò yèfinally终于zhōng yúdone做zuòfinished完wán了le!

¡Por fin he terminado la tarea!

Recuerda: 终 = la meta a la que has estado esforzándote — 终于 es el suspiro de alivio al cruzarla, siempre sellado con 了.

    Precaución

    • El 了 es obligatorio — 终于…了; nunca uses 终于 desnudo como el inglés "finally" solo.
    • Implica un resultado bienvenido. Para un "al final" plano y neutro, usa 最后.
    2.5

    几乎 — "casi, casi"

    English

几乎 means "nearly, almost" — it gets you right up to the line without quite crossing it. It loves company: it very often teams up with an "all" word (每, 所有, 全 … 都) or a "none" word (没有, 不).

    Structure: 几乎 + 每 / 所有 … 都 … · Subject + 几乎 + [不 / 没] + Predicate

almost几乎jī hūeveryone每个人měi ge rénall都dōuhas有yǒua phone手机shǒu jī。

    Almost everyone has a phone.

    almost几乎jī hūno没有méi yǒuone人rénbelieves相信xiāng xìnhim他tā。

    Almost no one believes him.

    my我wǒboss老板lǎo bǎnhardly几乎jī hūever不bùdrinks喝酒hē jiǔ。

    My boss hardly ever drinks.

Remember: think of 几乎 as a needle stopping just short of the mark. 几乎 + 都 → "almost all"; 几乎 + 没有 → "almost none"; 几乎不 / 几乎没 → "hardly ever."

    Watch out

    • It points to one extreme (all or none) — pair it with a 都 / 没有 / 不 to land the meaning.
    Español

几乎 significa "casi, casi" — te acerca hasta la línea sin cruzarla. Le gusta la compañía: a menudo se une a una palabra de "todo" (每, 所有, 全 … 都) o una palabra de "ninguno" (没有, 不).

    Estructura: 几乎 + 每 / 所有 … 都 … · Subject + 几乎 + [不 / 没] + Predicate

almost几乎jī hūeveryone每个人měi ge rénall都dōuhas有yǒua phone手机shǒu jī。

Casi todo el mundo tiene teléfono.

    almost几乎jī hūno没有méi yǒuone人rénbelieves相信xiāng xìnhim他tā。

    Casi nadie le cree.

    my我wǒboss老板lǎo bǎnhardly几乎jī hūever不bùdrinks喝酒hē jiǔ。

    Mí jefe casi nunca bebe.

Recuerda: piensa en 几乎 como una aguja que se detiene justo antes de la diana. 几乎 + 都 → "casi todos"; 几乎 + 没有 → "casi nadie"; 几乎不 / 几乎没 → "casi nunca".

    Precaución

    • Señala un extremo (todo o nada) — combínalo con 都 / 没有 / 不 para precisar el significado.
    2.6

    只 — "solo"

    English

只 (zhǐ) is the everyday word for "only." It's an adverb, so it clings to the verb (or an auxiliary like 会 / 能) — never to the noun the way English "only" floats around.

    Structure: 只 + Verb · 只 + 会 / 能 + Verb

    I我wǒonly只zhǐhave有yǒuone一个yí geolder brother哥哥gē ge。

I only have one older brother.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐwant想xiǎngto be with跟gēnyou你nǐtogether在一起zài yì qǐ。

I only want to be with you.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐcan能néngsay说shuōtwo两liǎngsentences句jùChinese中文Zhōng wén。

I can only say a couple of sentences in Chinese.

Remember: 只 sits on the verb: 我只有一个 ("I only have one"), never 我有只一个. English "only" wanders; Chinese 只 stays glued to the verb.

    Watch out

    • 只 (zhǐ, "only") is written the same as 只 (zhī), the measure word for animals (一只猫) — same character, two readings and jobs.
    Español

只 (zhǐ) es la palabra cotidiana para "solo". Es un adverbio, así que se pega al verbo (o a un auxiliar como 会 / 能) — nunca al sustantivo como el inglés "only" que flota por todas partes.

    Estructura: 只 + Verb · 只 + 会 / 能 + Verb

    I我wǒonly只zhǐhave有yǒuone一个yí geolder brother哥哥gē ge。

    Solo tengo un hermano mayor.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐwant想xiǎngto be with跟gēnyou你nǐtogether在一起zài yì qǐ。

    Solo quiero estar contigo.

    I我wǒonly只zhǐcan能néngsay说shuōtwo两liǎngsentences句jùChinese中文Zhōng wén。

Solo puedo decir unas cuantas frases en chino.

Recuerda: 只 se coloca sobre el verbo: 我只有一个 ("solo tengo uno"), nunca 我有只 uno. El inglés "only" vagabundea; el chino 只 se queda pegado al verbo.

    Precaución

    • 只 (zhǐ, "solo") se escribe igual que 只 (zhī), la clasificador de animales (一只猫) — mismo carácter, dos lecturas y funciones.
    2.7

    Duración + 没 + 动词 + 了 — cuánto tiempo *no* has hecho algo

    English

Here's a word order that trips up English speakers. To say how long you have NOT done something, the duration jumps in front of the verb: time + 没 + verb + 了. Compare the normal "did it for ten years" (verb first), and you'll see the mirror image.

    Structure: Subject + (已经 +) Duration + 没 + Verb + 了

    we我们wǒ menalready已经yǐ jīngten years十年shí niánhaven't没méimet见jiàn了le。

We haven't seen each other for ten years now.

he他tāa week一个星期yí ge xīng qīhasn't没méishowered洗澡xǐ zǎo了le。

He hasn't showered in a week.

    you你nǐhow long多久duō jiǔhaven't没méibeen home回家huí jiā了le?

How long has it been since you went home?

Remember: "have done" puts time after the verb; "haven't done" puts time before it. 看了十年 = "watched for ten years"; 十年没看了 = "haven't watched in ten years." The 了 here means "and counting."

    Watch out

    • Chinese avoids "since [a time point]." Say a duration instead (三年没…了), or 上次…是… ("the last time was…").
    Español

Aquí hay un orden que confunde a los hablantes de inglés. Para decir cuánto tiempo NO has hecho algo, la duración salta antes del verbo: time + 没 + verb + 了. Compara el normal "lo hizo durante diez años" (verbo primero), y verás la imagen especular.

    Estructura: Subject + (已经 +) Duration + 没 + Verb + 了

    we我们wǒ menalready已经yǐ jīngten years十年shí niánhaven't没méimet见jiàn了le。

Ya no nos vemos desde hace diez años.

he他tāa week一个星期yí ge xīng qīhasn't没méishowered洗澡xǐ zǎo了le。

No se ha bañado en una semana.

    you你nǐhow long多久duō jiǔhaven't没méibeen home回家huí jiā了le?

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que no vas a casa?

Recuerda: "haber hecho" pone el tiempo después del verbo; "no haber hecho" lo pone antes. 看了十年 = "vi durante diez años"; 十年没看了 = "no vi en diez años". El 了 aquí significa "y cuenta".

    Precaución

    • El chino evita "desde [punto temporal]". Di una duración en su lugar (三年没…了), o 上次…是… ("la última vez fue…").
    2.8

    Tiempo + 才 + 动词 — "hasta que" (tarde)

    English

才 (cái) drags an action later than expected — "not until, as late as." If 就 says "already, sooner than you'd think," 才 is its grumpy opposite: "only then, finally, took its time."

    Structure: Subject + Time + 才 + Verb

I我wǒyesterday昨天zuó tiāneleven o'clock十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáigot home到家dào jiā。

I didn't get home until eleven last night.

he他tātwenty-five二十五岁èr shí wǔ suìnot until才cáistarted上shànguniversity大学dà xué。

He didn't start university until he was twenty-five.

Remember: 才 = late / barely (就 = early / already). And 才 takes no 了 — the lateness is the point, not a completed result: 四十岁才结婚 ✓, never 才结婚了.

    Watch out

    • Same character does double duty: before a time it means "late" (this point); before a number it means "only a little" (point 2.12 below).
    Español

才 (cái) arrastra una acción más tarde de lo esperado — "hasta que, tan tarde como". Si 就 dice "ya, antes de lo que pensabas", 才 es su opuesto quejumbroso: "solo entonces, por fin, tardó".

    Estructura: Subject + Time + 才 + Verb

I我wǒyesterday昨天zuó tiāneleven o'clock十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáigot home到家dào jiā。

No llegué a casa hasta las once anoche.

he他tātwenty-five二十五岁èr shí wǔ suìnot until才cáistarted上shànguniversity大学dà xué。

No entró en la universidad hasta tener veinticinco años.

Recuerda: 才 = tarde / apenas (就 = temprano / ya). Y 才 no lleva 了 — la tardanza es el punto, no un resultado completado: 四十岁才结婚 ✓, nunca 才结婚了.

    Precaución

    • Mismo carácter con doble función: antes de un tiempo significa "tarde" (este punto); antes de un número significa "solo un poco" (punto 2.12 más abajo).
    2.9

    先 … ,再 … — "primero …, luego …"

    English

To line events up in order, frame them with 先 … 再 … — "first …, (and) then …." The trap: here 再 means "then / next," not its usual "again."

    Structure: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃chī。

Wash your hands first, then eat.

    you你nǐshould要yàofirst先xiāndo做zuòhomework作业zuò yèthen,再zàiwatch看kànTV电视diàn shì。

Do your homework first, then watch TV.

Remember: in 先…再…, 再 is the "and then" of a sequence, not "again." Picture two stepping stones: step on 先 first, then 再.

    Watch out

    • 先…再说 means "do X first, then we'll see" — a "deal with it later" feeling: 先吃饭再说.
    • Chain longer sequences with 然后 ("and then") and 接着 ("next").
    Español

Para ordenar eventos en secuencia, encuadra ambos con 先 … 再 … — "primero …, (y) luego …". La trampa: aquí 再 significa "luego / después", no su habitual "de nuevo".

    Estructura: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃chī。

Lávate las manos primero, luego come.

    you你nǐshould要yàofirst先xiāndo做zuòhomework作业zuò yèthen,再zàiwatch看kànTV电视diàn shì。

Haz la tarea primero, luego mira la tele.

Recuerda: en 先…再…, 再 es el "y luego" de una secuencia, no "de nuevo". Imagina dos piedras de paso: pisa 先 primero, luego 再.

    Precaución

    • 先…再说 significa "haz X primero, luego vemos" — sensación de "lo manejamos después": 先吃饭再说.
    • Encadena secuencias más largas con 然后 ("y luego") y 接着 ("después").

一边 … 一边 … — hacer dos cosas a la vez

    English

Two deliberate actions happening at the same time? Frame both with 一边 … 一边 … — "(do X) while (doing Y)." 边 means "side," so it's literally "on one side … on the other side …" — two tracks running together.

    Structure: Subject + 一边 + Verb 1 (,) 一边 + Verb 2

I我wǒoften常常cháng chángwhile一边yì biānshowering洗澡xǐ zǎo,一边yì biānsing唱歌chàng gē。

I often sing in the shower.

    don't别biéwhile一边yì biāndriving开车kāi chē,一边yì biānmake calls打电话dǎ diàn huà。

    Don't make calls while driving.

Remember: 边 = "side" — one action on each side, at once. Casually it shrinks to 边…边… (边走边聊, "chatting as we walk").

    Watch out

    • Both actions must be intentional; for "while X was going on," use …的时候.
    • The main action is usually the second one in Chinese (English often flips the order).
    Español

¿Dos acciones deliberadas ocurriendo al mismo tiempo? Encuadra ambas con 一边 … 一边 … — "(haz X) mientras (haces Y)". 边 significa "lado", así que literalmente es "en un lado … en el otro lado …" — dos carriles corriendo juntos.

    Estructura: Subject + 一边 + Verb 1 (,) 一边 + Verb 2

I我wǒoften常常cháng chángwhile一边yì biānshowering洗澡xǐ zǎo,一边yì biānsing唱歌chàng gē。

A menudo canto en la ducha.

    don't别biéwhile一边yì biāndriving开车kāi chē,一边yì biānmake calls打电话dǎ diàn huà。

    No llames mientras conduces.

Recuerda: 边 = "lado" — una acción en cada lado, a la vez. Informalmente se acorta a 边…边… (边走边聊, "charlando mientras caminamos").

    Precaución

    • Ambas acciones deben ser intencionales; para "mientras X estaba sucediendo", usa …的时候.
    • La acción principal suele ser la segunda en chino (inglés a menudo invierte el orden).
    2.11

    老是 — "siempre" (una queja)

    English

老是 (or just 老) also means "always" — but it's the grumbling version, loaded with frustration, like "you're always on your phone." Swap it in for 总是 anywhere you want to add an eye-roll.

    Structure: Subject + 老(是) + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy怎么zěn mealways老是lǎo shìlate迟到chí dào?

    Why are you always late?

    this这个zhè gemachine机器jī qìalways老是lǎo shìhaving出chūtrouble问题wèn tí。

This machine is always breaking down.

Remember: 总是 is neutral; 老是 complains. If you could add "ugh" to the English, use 老是.

    Watch out

    • It's a complaint — don't use it for something good (use 总是 there).
    • Before an adjective, add 不 / 很 / 这么: 老是不高兴.
    Español

老是 (o simplemente 老) también significa "siempre" — pero es la versión quejumbrosa, cargada de frustración, como "estás siempre en tu teléfono". Intercámbialo por 总是 donde quieras añadir un ceceo.

    Estructura: Subject + 老(是) + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy怎么zěn mealways老是lǎo shìlate迟到chí dào?

    ¿Por qué estás siempre atrasado?

    this这个zhè gemachine机器jī qìalways老是lǎo shìhaving出chūtrouble问题wèn tí。

    Esta máquina siempre da problemas.

Recuerda: 总是 es neutro; 老是 se queja. Si pudieras añadir "ay" al inglés, usa 老是.

    Precaución

    • Es una queja — no la uses para algo bueno (usa 总是 ahí).
    • Antes de un adjetivo, añade 不 / 很 / 这么: 老是不高兴.

才 + 数字 — "solo" (un número pequeño)

    English

A second job for 才 (cái): drop it before a number and it stresses the amount is smaller than you'd expect — "only, just, a mere." Where the "lateness" 才 says "late," this one says "barely that much."

    Structure: 才 + Number + Measure Word + Noun · 才 + Verb + Number + MW + Noun

    you你nǐonly才cáitwenty二十岁èr shí suì?

    You're only twenty?

this这家zhè jiāshop店diànonly才cáibeen open开业kāi yèone一个yí geweek星期xīng qī。

they他们tā menonly才cáiknown each other认识rèn shithree months三个月sān ge yuè!

They've only known each other three months!

Remember: one 才, two jobs — before a time it drags things late (2.8); before a number it shrinks the amount to only that much. Both share the feeling "less than expected."

    Watch out

    • After 才 + verb, the 了 is optional: 才来了两个月 ≈ 才来两个月.
    Español

Un segundo trabajo para 才 (cái): ponlo antes de un número y enfatiza que la cantidad es menor de lo esperado — "solo, apenas, mero". Donde el "tarde" 才 dice "tarde", este dice "tan poca cosa".

    Estructura: 才 + Number + Measure Word + Noun · 才 + Verb + Number + MW + Noun

    you你nǐonly才cáitwenty二十岁èr shí suì?

    ¿Solo tienes veinte años?

this这家zhè jiāshop店diànonly才cáibeen open开业kāi yèone一个yí geweek星期xīng qī。

they他们tā menonly才cáiknown each other认识rèn shithree months三个月sān ge yuè!

    ¡Solo se conocen tres meses!

Recuerda: un 才, dos trabajos — antes de un tiempo arrastra las cosas tarde (2.8); antes de un número reduce la cantidad a solo eso. Ambos comparten la sensación "menos de lo esperado".

    Precaución

    • Después de 才 + verbo, el 了 es opcional: 才来了两个月 ≈ 才来两个月.

    这么 / 那么 + adjetivo — "tan… así, tan… aquel…"

    English

Put 这么 or 那么 in front of an adjective to dial its degree up — English "so, this much, that much." The split mirrors English this vs that: 这么 points to something near or happening right now ("this cold"); 那么 points to something further off or already mentioned ("that clever").

Structure: Subject + 这么 / 那么 + Adjective

    today今天jīn tiānhow come怎么zěn meso这么zhè mecold冷lěng?

Why is it so cold today?

you你nǐso那么nà meclever聪明cōng mingsurely,一定yí dìngcan能néngguess it猜到cāi dào。

You're so clever — you'll definitely guess it.

Remember: 这 = here / now, 那 = there / then; the 么 turns "this/that" into "this much / that much." Same split as English this/that.

    Watch out

    • Both translate as "so," but keep the near/far feel: 这么 for what's in front of you, 那么 for what's removed.
    • Very common after 怎么 for a surprised "how come it's so …?": 怎么这么贵.
    Español

Coloca 这么 o 那么 delante de un adjetivo para aumentar su grado — en inglés: "so, this much, that much". La distinción refleja el contraste entre this y that en inglés: 这么 señala algo que está cerca o que ocurre ahora mismo ("este frío"); 那么 señala algo más lejos o ya mencionado ("ese ingenio").

Estructura: Subject + 这么 / 那么 + Adjective

    today今天jīn tiānhow come怎么zěn meso这么zhè mecold冷lěng?

¿Por qué hace tanto frío hoy?

you你nǐso那么nà meclever聪明cōng mingsurely,一定yí dìngcan能néngguess it猜到cāi dào。

Eres tan inteligente — seguro que adivinarás la respuesta.

Recuerda: 这 = aquí / ahora, 那 = allí / entonces; la partícula 么 convierte "this/that" en "tan… así / tan… aquel". La misma distinción que en inglés.

    Precaución

    • Ambos se traducen como "tan", pero mantén la sensación de cerca/lejos: usa 这么 para lo que tienes enfrente, 那么 para lo que está alejado.
    • Es muy común después de 怎么 para expresar una sorpresa tipo "¿por qué es tan…?": 怎么这么贵 (¿Por qué es tan caro?).
    3.2

    A + 跟 / 和 + B + 一样 — "igual que, tan… como"

    English

To say two things are alike, link them with 跟 (or 和) and 一样 — literally "one same (shape)." Add an adjective on the end and you get "equally …, as … as."

    Structure: Noun 1 + 跟 / 和 + Noun 2 + 一样 (+ Adjective)

your home你家nǐ jiāas跟gēnmy home我家wǒ jiāthe same一样yí yàngbig大dà。

Your place is just as big as mine.

Beijing北京Běi jīng的deweather天气tiān qìand和héShanghai上海Shàng hǎinot不bùthe same一样yí yàng。

    Beijing's weather isn't the same as Shanghai's.

Remember: 一样 = "one-same" — cut from the same cloth. The adjective rides after 一样 (一样大 = "equally big"), and 不 to negate goes before it (不一样).

    Watch out

    • Word order traps English speakers: it's …一样大, never 大一样.
    • 跟 and 和 are interchangeable here; 跟 is more spoken, 和 a touch more neutral.
    Español

Para decir que dos cosas son similares, únelas con 跟 (o 和) y 一样 — literalmente "uno igual (forma)". Si añades un adjetivo al final, obtendrás "igualmente…, tan… como".

    Estructura: Noun 1 + 跟 / 和 + Noun 2 + 一样 (+ Adjective)

your home你家nǐ jiāas跟gēnmy home我家wǒ jiāthe same一样yí yàngbig大dà。

Tu casa es tan grande como la mía.

Beijing北京Běi jīng的deweather天气tiān qìand和héShanghai上海Shàng hǎinot不bùthe same一样yí yàng。

El tiempo en Beijing no es igual que en Shanghái.

Recuerda: 一样 = "uno-igual" — sacada del mismo molde. El adjetivo va después de 一样 (一样大 = "tan grande"), y 不 para negar va antes (不一样).

    Precaución

    • El orden de palabras atrapa a los hablantes de inglés: debe ser …一样大, nunca 大一样.
    • 跟 y 和 son intercambiables aquí; 跟 es más coloquial, 和 ligeramente más neutral.
    3.3

    又 … 又 … — "tanto… como…"

    English

The frame 又 … 又 … stacks two qualities that hold at the same time — "both … and …." The one rule: the two adjectives must share the same feeling — both positive, or both negative. Mixing a plus and a minus jars the Chinese ear.

    Structure: Subject + 又 + Adjective 1 + 又 + Adjective 2

    this这个zhè gehouse房子fáng ziboth又yòubig大dàand又yòubright亮liàng。

This house is both big and bright.

    here这里zhè lǐ的decoffee咖啡kā fēiboth又yòuexpensive贵guìand又yòubad-tasting难喝nán hē。

The coffee here is both pricey and nasty.

Remember: both 又's must point the same way — 又便宜又好 (both plus ✓), 又贵又难喝 (both minus ✓), but not 又贵又好 (mixed ✗).

    Watch out

    • For two simultaneous actions rather than qualities, use 一边…一边… instead.
    Español

La estructura 又 … 又 … agrupa dos cualidades que se mantienen al mismo tiempo — "tanto… como…". La única regla: los dos adjetivos deben compartir el mismo tono — ambos positivos o ambos negativos. Mezclar uno positivo con uno negativo resulta antinatural para el oído chino.

    Estructura: Subject + 又 + Adjective 1 + 又 + Adjective 2

    this这个zhè gehouse房子fáng ziboth又yòubig大dàand又yòubright亮liàng。

Esta casa es tan grande como luminosa.

    here这里zhè lǐ的decoffee咖啡kā fēiboth又yòuexpensive贵guìand又yòubad-tasting难喝nán hē。

El café aquí es tan caro como desagradable.

Recuerda: ambos 又 deben apuntar en la misma dirección — 又便宜又好 (ambos positivos ✓), 又贵又难喝 (ambos negativos ✓), pero no 又贵又好 (mezclado ✗).

    Precaución

    • Para dos acciones simultáneas en lugar de cualidades, usa 一边…一边… en su lugar.
    3.4

比较 + adjetivo — "bastante, bastante, relativamente"

    English

比较 literally means "to compare," and as an adverb it means "fairly, rather, comparatively." It's a gentle hedge — softer and less absolute than 很 or 非常 — and it quietly implies "more so than the rest," even when nothing else is named.

Structure: Subject + 比较 + Adjective (also 比较 + feeling-verb)

    this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tífairly比较bǐ jiàosimple简单jiǎn dān。

    This question is fairly simple.

    I我wǒrather比较bǐ jiàoprefer喜欢xǐ huantaking坐zuòthe subway地铁dì tiě。

I rather prefer taking the subway.

Remember: 比较 has "compare" (比) baked in — it always whispers "relatively, compared to the alternatives." Use it to sound measured, not gushing.

    Watch out

    • Works with feeling-verbs too: 比较喜欢, 比较讨厌.
    Español

比较 significa literalmente "comparar", y como adverbio significa "bastante, bastante, comparativamente". Es un matiz suave — menos absoluto que 很 o 非常— e implica sutilmente "más que el resto", incluso cuando no se nombra nada más.

Estructura: Subject + 比较 + Adjective (también 比较 + feeling-verb)

    this这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tífairly比较bǐ jiàosimple简单jiǎn dān。

    Esta pregunta es bastante simple.

    I我wǒrather比较bǐ jiàoprefer喜欢xǐ huantaking坐zuòthe subway地铁dì tiě。

    Prefiero bastante tomar el metro.

Recuerda: 比较 tiene "comparar" (比) implícito — siempre susurra "relativamente, en comparación con las alternativas". Úsalo para sonar mesurado, no exaltado.

    Precaución

    • Funciona también con verbos de sentimiento: 比较喜欢, 比较讨厌.
    3.5

    多 + adjetivo — "¡qué…!" (exclamación)

    English

In an exclamation, 多 (or 多么) before an adjective means "how …!, so …!" — a quick, emotional burst of admiration or complaint. It usually closes with 啊.

    Structure: Subject + 多 + Adjective + 啊!

    your你nǐdaughter女儿nǚ érhow多duōclever聪明cōng ming啊a!

    How clever your daughter is!

    on your own一个人yí ge rénhow多duōnice好hǎo!

How nice it is to have the place to yourself!

Remember: the same 多 that asks about degree — 你多大?("how old?") — also exclaims it: 多大啊!("how big!"). The 啊 and the "!" are the tell.

    Watch out

    • It's an exclamation — pair it with 啊 and a "!".
    Español

En una exclamación, 多 (o 多么) antes de un adjetivo significa "¡qué…!, ¡tan…!" — un estallido rápido y emocional de admiración o queja. Generalmente termina con 啊.

    Estructura: Subject + 多 + Adjective + 啊!

    your你nǐdaughter女儿nǚ érhow多duōclever聪明cōng ming啊a!

    ¡Qué hija tan inteligente!

    on your own一个人yí ge rénhow多duōnice好hǎo!

    ¡Qué bien estar solo!

Recuerda: el mismo 多 que pregunta por el grado — 你多大?("¿cuántos años tienes?") — también exclama ese grado: 多大啊!("¡qué grande!"). El 啊 y el "!" son la clave.

    Precaución

    • Es una exclamación — acompáñala con 啊 y un "!".
    3.6

    Adjetivo + 的 + sustantivo — describir un sustantivo

    English

To stick an adjective in front of a noun, glue them together with 的 — Chinese's all-purpose "of / 's" link. English just lines the words up ("a beautiful girl"); Chinese threads 的 between them.

    Structure: Adjective + 的 + Noun

    beautiful漂亮piào liang的degirl女孩儿nǚ háir

    a beautiful girl

    you你nǐwant要yàocold冷lěng的deor还是hái shìhot热rè的de?

Do you want a cold one or a hot one?

Remember: 的 clips an adjective onto a noun. A two-syllable adjective almost always needs it (漂亮的女孩); a tight one-syllable pairing can drop it (好朋友, "good friend").

    Watch out

    • Adj + 的 can stand alone for "the … one(s)": 我要甜的 ("I'll have the sweet one").
    Español

Para colocar un adjetivo delante de un sustantivo, unelos con 的 — el nexo universal chino de "de / 's". En inglés simplemente alineamos las palabras ("a beautiful girl"); en chino intercalamos 的 entre ellas.

    Estructura: Adjective + 的 + Noun

    beautiful漂亮piào liang的degirl女孩儿nǚ háir

    una chica hermosa

    you你nǐwant要yàocold冷lěng的deor还是hái shìhot热rè的de?

¿Quieres algo frío o algo caliente?

Recuerda: une un adjetivo a un sustantivo. Un adjetivo de dos sílabas casi siempre lo necesita (漂亮的女孩); una combinación ajustada de una sola sílaba puede omitirlo (好朋友, "buen amigo").

    Precaución

    • Adj + 的 puede funcionar solo para referirse a "el/los …": 我要甜的 ("Quiero el dulce").
  • 4 Conjunctions · ⁨Conjunctiones⁩

    或者 — "or" (en afirmaciones)

    English

Use 或者 to lay out alternatives in a statement — "either … or." It tells, it doesn't ask: "coffee or tea, both fine." The moment you want the listener to choose, you must switch to 还是 (the last point in this topic) — this is the single most-tested "or" trap in Chinese.

    Structure: Possibility 1 + 或者 + Possibility 2

    I我wǒdrink喝hēcoffee咖啡kā fēior或者huò zhětea茶cháeither,都dōuis fine行xíng。

Coffee or tea — either's fine for me.

Saturday星期六xīng qī liùor或者huò zhěSunday星期天xīng qī tiānboth,都dōuwork可以kě yǐ。

    Saturday or Sunday both work.

Remember: 或者 = "or" when you tell; 还是 = "or" when you ask. A statement ("either is fine") takes 或者; a question ("which one?") takes 还是.

    Watch out

    • It often closes with 都行 / 都可以 ("either one is fine").
    Español

Utilice 或者 para presentar alternativas en una afirmación: "ya sea … o". Indica algo, no pregunta: "café o té, ambos bien". En el momento en que desea que el oyente elija, debe cambiar a 还是 (el último punto de este tema): esta es la única trampa de "or" más evaluada en chino.

    Estructura: Possibility 1 + 或者 + Possibility 2

    I我wǒdrink喝hēcoffee咖啡kā fēior或者huò zhětea茶cháeither,都dōuis fine行xíng。

Café o té — me da igual cualquiera.

Saturday星期六xīng qī liùor或者huò zhěSunday星期天xīng qī tiānboth,都dōuwork可以kě yǐ。

Tanto el sábado como el domingo funcionan.

Recuerde: 或者 = "or" cuando usted dice; 还是 = "or" cuando usted pregunta. Una afirmación ("cualquiera está bien") requiere 或者; una pregunta ("¿cuál?") requiere 还是.

    Precaución

    • A menudo termina con 都行 / 都可以 ("cualquiera está bien").
    4.2

那 / 那么 — "entonces, en ese caso"

    English

那 (or the fuller 那么) picks up what was just said and draws a suggestion or conclusion from it — "then, so, in that case." It opens your reply, reacting to the other person's remark. (It's the same 那 as "that" — literally "that being so, …".)

    Structure: Situation ,那(么) + Suggestion / Decision

    he他tāwon't不bùlisten听tīngthen,那nàI我wǒshould应该yīng gāido what怎么办zěn me bàn?

He won't listen — so what should I do?

You don't like this one — then let's swap it.

Remember: 那(么) = "that being so…" — it reacts and suggests in conversation. It is not 所以 ("therefore"), which states a cause→effect inside one thought.

    Watch out

    • A bare 那 is the most natural in speech; 那么 sounds a touch more formal.
    Español

那 (o la forma completa 那么) retoma lo que se acaba de decir y extrae de ello una sugerencia o conclusión: "entonces, pues, en ese caso". Abre su respuesta, reaccionando al comentario del otro. (Es el mismo 那 que significa "eso"; literalmente "eso siendo así, …".)

    Estructura: Situation ,那(么) + Suggestion / Decision

    he他tāwon't不bùlisten听tīngthen,那nàI我wǒshould应该yīng gāido what怎么办zěn me bàn?

Él no quiere escuchar — ¿qué debería hacer yo?

No te gusta este — entonces cambiémoslo por otro.

Recuerde: 那(么) = "siendo eso…": reacciona y sugiere en la conversación. No es 所以 ("por lo tanto"), ya que este último expresa causa→efecto dentro de un solo pensamiento.

    Precaución

    • Un 那 desnudo es lo más natural en el habla; 那么 suena ligeramente más formal.
    4.3

    跟 … (一起) + Verbo — "con (alguien)"

    English

Before the verb, 跟 marks the person you do something with — "(together) with." It frequently teams up with 一起 ("together"). 跟 also means "to follow / heel," which is why it leans toward doing things alongside someone.

    Structure: Subject + 跟 + Person + (一起) + Verb

    you你nǐwant to要yàowith跟gēnme我wǒtogether一起yì qǐgo去qù吗ma?

Do you want to come with me?

    after跟gēnme我wǒread读dú。

    Read after me.

Remember: 跟 literally "to follow" — so 跟我读 is "read after me." The "with" phrase always sits before the verb: 跟你见面 ✓, never 见面你.

    Watch out

    • 跟 ≈ 和 for plain "with," but only 跟 carries the "follow" sense (跟我来, "come with / after me").
    Español

Antes del verbo, 跟 marca a la persona con la que hace algo: "(juntamente) con". A menudo se combina con 一起 ("juntos"). 跟 también significa "seguir / ir tras", lo cual explica por qué tiende a usarse para hacer cosas junto a alguien.

    Estructura: Subject + 跟 + Person + (一起) + Verb

    you你nǐwant to要yàowith跟gēnme我wǒtogether一起yì qǐgo去qù吗ma?

    ¿Quieres venir conmigo?

    after跟gēnme我wǒread读dú。

    Lee detrás de mí.

Recuerde: 跟 literalmente significa "seguir" — por eso 跟我读 es "lee después de mí". La frase con "con" siempre va antes del verbo: 跟你见面 ✓, nunca 见面你.

    Precaución

    • 跟 ≈ 和 para un "con" simple, pero solo 跟 lleva el sentido de "seguir" (跟我来, "ven conmigo / detrás de mí").
    4.4

    English

Remember: Chinese stamps the time-word after the event: 吃饭以前 = "eating-before." Flip the English order and tack 以前 on the end.

    Watch out

    • "Verb + 以前" means "before [doing] the action" (做作业以前 = "before doing homework").
    Español

Coloca 以前 (yǐqián) después de un tiempo o una acción para significar "antes" de ella. La trampa para los hablantes de inglés es el orden: el punto de referencia viene primero, seguido de 以前 — lo contrario exacto de "before eating", que en chino se dice como "eating-before".

Estructura: Time / Verb Phrase + 以前 ,……

    eating吃饭chī fànbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐwash hands洗手xǐ shǒu了le吗ma?

¿Te lavaste las manos antes de comer?

Friday星期五xīng qī wǔbefore以前yǐ qiányou,你nǐneed to要yàofinish做完zuò wánthis这些zhè xiēwork工作gōng zuò。

Debes terminar este trabajo antes del viernes.

Recuerda: El chino coloca la palabra de tiempo después del evento: 吃饭以前 = "comer-antes". Invierte el orden del inglés y añade 以前 al final.

    Precaución

    • "Verbo + 以前" significa "antes de [hacer] la acción" (做作业以前 = "antes de hacer la tarea").
    5.2

以前,…… — "en el pasado, antes" (general)

    English

Drop 以前 at the front of a sentence and it means "in the past, back then" — a general earlier time, no specific event attached. It can also slip in right after the subject.

    Structure: 以前 + Subject + Verb · Subject + 以前 + Verb

in the past以前yǐ qiánI,我wǒcouldn't不会bú huìspeak说shuōChinese中文Zhōng wén。

    I couldn't speak Chinese before.

    he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shī。

He used to be a chef.

Remember: one 以前, two spots — after an event it's "before X" (吃饭以前); at the front it's "in the past, used to." It usually contrasts the past with now (often with a 了 marking the change).

    Watch out

    • Front position or after-the-subject — both are correct.
    Español

Coloca 以前 al inicio de una oración y significa "en el pasado, entonces" — un tiempo anterior general, sin un evento específico asociado. También puede colocarse justo después del sujeto.

    Estructura: 以前 + Subject + Verb · Subject + 以前 + Verb

in the past以前yǐ qiánI,我wǒcouldn't不会bú huìspeak说shuōChinese中文Zhōng wén。

    Antes no sabía hablar chino.

    he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shī。

    Él solía ser chef.

Recuerda: Una sola 以前, dos lugares: después de un evento significa "antes de X" (吃饭以前); al inicio significa "en el pasado, solía". Generalmente contrasta el pasado con el presente (a menudo con un 了 que marca el cambio).

    Precaución

    • Posición inicial o después del sujeto — ambas son correctas.
    5.3

刚才 — "hace un momento, hace poco"

    English

刚才 (gāngcái) is a time word for the very recent past — "just now, a moment ago." Don't confuse it with the adverb 刚: 刚才 is a noun (a moment that just passed) and can stand alone, while 刚 ("just") clings to the verb.

Structure: (Subject +) 刚才 + Verb

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    What did you just say?

    just now刚才gāng cáiwho谁shéicame来lái了le?

    Who came just now?

Remember: 刚才 = a noun (a moment in the past, can sit anywhere); 刚 = an adverb (glued to the verb). 我刚到 ("I just arrived") vs 刚才谁来了?("who came a moment ago?").

    Watch out

    • 刚才 can take a 了 / 的 on the verb (刚才到的); 刚 + verb usually doesn't.
    Español

刚才 (gāngcái) es una palabra de tiempo para el pasado muy reciente — "hace un momento, hace poco". No lo confundas con el adverbio 刚: 刚才 es un sustantivo (un momento que acaba de pasar) y puede funcionar solo, mientras que 刚 ("acabar de") se adhiere al verbo.

Estructura: (Subject +) 刚才 + Verb

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    ¿Qué acabas de decir?

    just now刚才gāng cáiwho谁shéicame来lái了le?

    ¿Quién vino hace un momento?

Recuerda: 刚才 = un sustantivo (un momento en el pasado, puede ir en cualquier lugar); 刚 = un adverbio (pegado al verbo). 我刚到 ("Acabo de llegar") vs 刚才谁来了?("¿Quién vino hace un momento?").

    Precaución

    • 刚才 puede llevar un 了 / 的 sobre el verbo (刚才到的); 刚 + verbo generalmente no.
    5.4

Tiempo / Evento + 时 — "cuando, en el momento de"

    English

时 is a compact, formal stand-in for 的时候 — "when, at the time of" — placed after a time or event. The thing to remember: it drops the 的.

    Structure: Time / Event + 时 ,……

    exam考试kǎo shìduring时shídon't不要bú yàotalk说话shuō huà。

    Don't talk during the exam.

    I我wǒinterviews面试miàn shìduring时shíoften经常jīng chángask问wènthis这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tí。

I often ask this question during interviews.

Remember: 时 is 的时候 in its Sunday best — same meaning, formal register, and no 的: 考试时 ✓, never 考试的时. In speech you'd just say 考试的时候.

    Watch out

    • Reserve it for writing or set phrases; everyday speech uses 的时候.
    Español

时 es una alternativa compacta y formal a 的时候 — "cuando, en el momento de" — que se coloca después de un tiempo o evento. Lo que hay que recordar: omite el 的.

    Estructura: Time / Event + 时 ,……

    exam考试kǎo shìduring时shídon't不要bú yàotalk说话shuō huà。

    No converses durante el examen.

    I我wǒinterviews面试miàn shìduring时shíoften经常jīng chángask问wènthis这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tí。

Frecuentemente hago esta pregunta durante las entrevistas.

Recuerda: 时 es 的时候 en su mejor atuendo — mismo significado, registro formal y sin 的: 考试时 ✓, nunca 考试的时. En el habla cotidiana dirías simplemente 考试的时候.

    Precaución

    • Resérvalo para la escritura o frases hechas; el habla cotidiana usa 的时候.
    5.5

以后,…… — "en el futuro, de ahora en adelante"

    English

At the start of a sentence, 以后 means "in the future, from now on, later." It mirrors 以前 exactly: it can sit at the front ("from now on"), after the subject, or after an event ("after …").

    Structure: 以后 + Subject + Verb · Event + 以后 ,……

    I我wǒfrom now on以后yǐ hòuwon't不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ了le。

I won't drink from now on.

class ends下课xià kèafter以后yǐ hòuwe,我们wǒ mengo去qùeat吃饭chī fàn。

    After class, let's go eat.

Remember: 以后 is the perfect mirror of 以前 — after an event = "after X" (下课以后 / 下课以前); at the front = "from now on" / "in the past." But it points to an indefinite future, not "in a moment" (that's 一会儿).

    Watch out

    • Don't let "later" mislead you into using it for "shortly" — 以后 is the open-ended future.
    Español

Al inicio de una oración, 以后 significa "en el futuro, de ahora en adelante, más tarde". Es el espejo exacto de 以前: puede estar al principio ("de ahora en adelante"), después del sujeto o después de un evento ("después de …").

    Estructura: 以后 + Subject + Verb · Event + 以后 ,……

    I我wǒfrom now on以后yǐ hòuwon't不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ了le。

De ahora en adelante no voy a beber alcohol.

class ends下课xià kèafter以后yǐ hòuwe,我们wǒ mengo去qùeat吃饭chī fàn。

Después de la clase, vamos a comer.

Recuerda: 以后 es el espejo perfecto de 以前 — después de un evento = "después de X" (下课以后 / 下课以前); al principio = "de ahora en adelante" / "en el pasado". Pero señala un futuro indeterminado, no "en un momento" (eso es 一会儿).

    Precaución

    • No dejes que "más tarde" te lleve a usarlo para "pronto/ dentro de poco" — 以后 es el futuro sin límites.
    5.6

…… ,后来 …… — "después, luego" (solo pasado)

    English

后来 (hòulái) sequences past events — "afterwards, later on." The hard limit: both events must have already happened. 后(after) + 来(came) — it has, by definition, already come.

Structure: [Past Event 1] ,后来 [Past Event 2]

    at first开始kāi shǐmy我wǒparents父母fù mǔdidn't不bùagree同意tóng yìlater,后来hòu láiagreed同意tóng yì了le。

At first my parents disapproved; later they came round.

he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shīlater,后来hòu láibecame当dāng了lethe boss老板lǎo bǎn。

He used to be a chef; later he became the boss.

Remember: 后来 = a PAST "and then" (both events done and dusted). For a future "and then," switch to 然后. The 来 ("came") tells you it has already arrived.

    Watch out

    • Never use 后来 for a plan or future sequence — that's 然后.
    Español

后来 (hòulái) secuencia eventos en el pasado — "después, luego". El límite estricto: ambos eventos deben haber ocurrido ya. 后 (después) + 来 (venir) — por definición, ya ha venido.

Estructura: [Past Event 1] ,后来 [Past Event 2]

    at first开始kāi shǐmy我wǒparents父母fù mǔdidn't不bùagree同意tóng yìlater,后来hòu láiagreed同意tóng yì了le。

Al principio mis padres no estaban de acuerdo; luego cambiaron de opinión.

he他tāused to以前yǐ qiánbe是shìa chef厨师chú shīlater,后来hòu láibecame当dāng了lethe boss老板lǎo bǎn。

Él solía ser chef; luego se convirtió en el jefe.

Recuerda: 后来 = un "y luego" PASADO (ambos eventos terminados y concluidos). Para un "y luego" en el futuro, cambia a 然后. El 来 ("venir") te indica que ya ha llegado.

    Precaución

    • Nunca uses 后来 para un plan o una secuencia futura — eso es 然后.

Números + Números — aproximación con dos números consecutivos

    English

Say two consecutive numbers back to back and you get "about, a few" — exactly like English "three or four" or "a day or two." It's the quickest way to be vague about a quantity.

Structure: Number + (next Number) + Measure Word + Noun

I我wǒwaited等děng了lefor you你nǐthree or four三四个sān sì gehours小时xiǎo shí。

I waited three or four hours for you.

this这个zhè geword词cíwe我们wǒ menhave studied学过xué guotwo or three times两三次liǎng sān cì了le。

We've studied this word two or three times now.

Remember: for the productive "N or N+1" approximation the two numbers are next-door neighbours — 三四, 七八, 两三. (A few skip-pairs survive only as fixed idioms — e.g. 三五 in 三五成群 / 三五天 "a few" — so learn those as set phrases, not as a pattern to build.) For "ten-odd / a dozen-ish," use 十几.

    Watch out

    • 一两 ("one or two") is the common small one: 一两天 ("a day or two").
    Español

Si dices dos números consecutivos juntos, obtienes "aproximadamente, unos cuantos" — exactamente como en inglés "three or four" o "a day or two". Es la forma más rápida de ser vago sobre una cantidad.

Estructura: Number + (next Number) + Measure Word + Noun

I我wǒwaited等děng了lefor you你nǐthree or four三四个sān sì gehours小时xiǎo shí。

Esperé tres o cuatro horas por ti.

this这个zhè geword词cíwe我们wǒ menhave studied学过xué guotwo or three times两三次liǎng sān cì了le。

Hemos estudiado esta palabra dos o tres veces ya.

Recuerda: para la aproximación productiva de "N o N+1", los dos números son vecinos directos — 三四, 七八, 两三. (Pocos pares saltados sobreviven solo como expresiones fijas — p. ej., 三五 en 三五成群 / 三五天 "unos cuantos" — así que aprende esas como frases hechas, no como un patrón para construir). Para "diez y algo / una docena más o menos", usa 十几.

    Precaución

    • 一两 ("uno o dos") es el común pequeño: 一两天 ("un día o dos").

    万 / 亿 — números grandes

    English

Here's where Chinese numbers feel alien: the language counts big in 万 (ten thousand) and 亿 (hundred million), not in thousands and millions. So you have to group digits in fours, not threes — and that mental regrouping is the whole skill.

    Structure: Number + 万 · Number + 亿

    one million一百万yì bǎi wàn

    1,000,000 — literally "a hundred 万 (ten-thousands)."

    1.4 billion十四亿shí sì yì

    1.4 billion — roughly China's population.

    Remember: mentally shift the comma one digit left: 12,000 → "1|2000" → 一万两千. Lock in 万 = 10⁴ and 亿 = 10⁸, then regroup in fours: 52,152 = 五万两千一百五十二.

    Watch out

    • English "million" = 一百万 (a hundred 万); English "billion" = 十亿 (ten 亿). The mismatch is what trips people up.
    Español

Aquí es donde los números chinos parecen extraños: el idioma cuenta grandes cantidades en 万 (diez mil) y 亿 (cien millones), no en miles y millones. Así que tienes que agrupar dígitos de a cuatro, no de a tres — y ese reagrupamiento mental es toda la habilidad.

    Estructura: Number + 万 · Number + 亿

    one million一百万yì bǎi wàn

1,000,000 — literalmente "un cien 万 (diez mil)."

    1.4 billion十四亿shí sì yì

1.4 billones — aproximadamente la población de China.

    Recuerda: mentalmente desplaza la coma un dígito a la izquierda: 12,000 → "1|2000" → 一万两千. Fija 万 = 10⁴ y 亿 = 10⁸, luego reagrupa de a cuatro: 52,152 = 五万两千一百五十二.

    Precaución

    • El inglés "million" = 一百万 (un ciento 万); el inglés "billion" = 十亿 (diez 亿). La discrepancia es lo que confunde a la gente.

    x 点 y 分 / 刻 / 差 — decir la hora (preciso)

    English

Once you can say whole hours, add the detail: 分 for minutes, 刻 for quarter-hours, and 差 for the minutes short of the hour. One quirk: a single-digit minute needs a 零 ("oh") to fill the gap.

    Structure: x 点 (零) y 分 · x 点 y 刻 · 差 y 分 x 点

    two o'clock两点liǎng diǎnoh零língnine minutes九分jiǔ fēn

    2:09 (零 fills the single-digit minute).

    to差chàfive minutes五分wǔ fēnthree o'clock三点sān diǎn

    Five to three.

Remember: 刻 = a quarter (一刻 = :15, 三刻 = :45); 差 = "short of," so 差五分三点 is "five to three"; and any minute under 10 takes a 零 (两点零九分).

    Watch out

    • 差 comes first, before the minutes and hour: 差五分八点 = "7:55."
    Español

Una vez que puedes decir horas enteras, añade los detalles: 分 para minutos, 刻 para cuartos de hora, y 差 para los minutos que faltan para la hora. Una peculiaridad: un minuto de un solo dígito necesita un 零 ("oh") para llenar el hueco.

    Estructura: x 点 (零) y 分 · x 点 y 刻 · 差 y 分 x 点

    two o'clock两点liǎng diǎnoh零língnine minutes九分jiǔ fēn

2:09 (el 零 llena el minuto de un solo dígito).

    to差chàfive minutes五分wǔ fēnthree o'clock三点sān diǎn

    Cinco para las tres.

Recuerda: 刻 = un cuarto (一刻 = :15, 三刻 = :45); 差 = "faltando", así que 差五分三点 es "cinco para las tres"; y cualquier minuto menor a 10 toma un 零 (两点零九分).

    Precaución

    • 差 aparece primero, antes de los minutos y la hora: 差五分八点 = "7:55."
    6.4

Números + 点(钟) — decir la hora (básico)

    English

The whole hour is a number + 点 ("o'clock"), with 半 for half past. A full time-stamp is built big-to-small: day → part of day → clock time — the opposite of casual English.

    Structure: (上午 / 下午 +) Number + 点 (+ 半)

now现在xiàn zàiafternoon下午xià wǔhalf past two两点半liǎng diǎn bàn。

    It's 2:30 pm now.

Sunday星期天xīng qī tiānmorning上午shàng wǔhalf past ten十点半shí diǎn bàn

    Sunday at 10:30 am.

Remember: there's no "am/pm" word — put 上午 (morning) or 下午 (afternoon) before the time, and build everything big-to-small (date → part of day → 点). The 钟 in 点钟 is optional and usually dropped.

    Watch out

    • "2 o'clock" is 两点, not 二点 — use 两 for the hour count.
    Español

La hora entera es un número + 点 ("en punto"), con 半 para media. Una marca temporal completa se construye de grande a pequeño: día → parte del día → hora en reloj — lo opuesto al inglés coloquial.

    Estructura: (上午 / 下午 +) Number + 点 (+ 半)

now现在xiàn zàiafternoon下午xià wǔhalf past two两点半liǎng diǎn bàn。

    Son las 2:30 pm ahora.

Sunday星期天xīng qī tiānmorning上午shàng wǔhalf past ten十点半shí diǎn bàn

    Domingo a las 10:30 am.

Recuerda: no hay palabra "am/pm" — pon 上午 (mañana) o 下午 (tarde) antes de la hora, y construye todo de grande a pequeño (fecha → parte del día → 点). El 钟 en 点钟 es opcional y generalmente se omite.

    Precaución

    Verbo + 着 — un estado continuo

    English

着 (zhe) after a verb freezes the action into a lingering state — the door is (standing) open, you are holding it. Think of 着 as a clip that keeps the verb "switched on." A second, very common use is Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2: V1着 sets the posture or manner, and V2 is the real action done in that state.

    Structure: Verb + 着 · Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2

you all你们nǐ mensit坐zuò着zheI,我wǒright away马上mǎ shàngcome back回来huí lái。

Stay seated — I'll be right back.

    she她tālikes to喜欢xǐ huanstand站zhàn着zheeat吃饭chī fàn。

She likes to eat standing up.

    he他tāsmiling笑xiào着zhesaid说shuōsorry对不起duì bu qǐ。

    Smiling, he said sorry.

Remember: 着 = the verb held on, lingering (门开着 = "the door stays open"); for an action actively in progress, use 在 (他在吃饭). In V1着V2, V1 is the backdrop, V2 the real action — 站着吃 = "eat while standing."

    Watch out

    • 着 is a state, not a play-by-play — pair it with 在/正在 only when you really mean "is currently …".
    Español

着 (zhe) después de un verbo congela la acción en un estado persistente — la puerta está abierta, tú la estás sosteniendo. Piensa en 着 como un clip que mantiene el verbo "encendido". Un segundo uso muy común es Verbo 1 + 着 + Verbo 2: V1着 establece la postura o la manera, y V2 es la acción real realizada en ese estado.

    Estructura: Verb + 着 · Verb 1 + 着 + Verb 2

you all你们nǐ mensit坐zuò着zheI,我wǒright away马上mǎ shàngcome back回来huí lái。

    Siéntense — vuelvo enseguida.

    she她tālikes to喜欢xǐ huanstand站zhàn着zheeat吃饭chī fàn。

A ella le gusta comer de pie.

    he他tāsmiling笑xiào着zhesaid说shuōsorry对不起duì bu qǐ。

Con una sonrisa, él pidió perdón.

Recuerda: 着 = el verbo mantenido, persistente (门开着 = "la puerta sigue abierta"); para una acción activamente en curso, usa 在 (他在吃饭). En V1着V2, V1 es el telón de fondo, V2 la acción real — 站着吃 = "comer mientras se está de pie."

    Precaución

    • 着 es un estado, no un juego paso a paso — úsalo con 在/正在 solo cuando realmente quieras decir "actualmente …".
    7.2

    …… 了 — un cambio de estado

    English

Sentence-final 了 can announce a new situation — something has become the case that wasn't before. This "change" 了 (often called 了₂) is a different beast from the 了 that marks a completed action; here it means "now."

    Structure: Subject + Adjective + 了 · Subject + Verb + 了

    I我wǒhungry饿è了le。

    I'm hungry (now).

    raining下雨xià yǔ了le。

    It's raining (it wasn't before).

    the baby宝宝bǎo baocan会huìtalk说话shuō huà了le。

    The baby can talk now.

Remember: this 了 = "now, a new state" (饿了 = "hungry now"), not "did and finished." Whenever you'd add "now" in English, this is the 了 you want: 他当经理了 ("he's a manager now").

    Watch out

    • Same character, two jobs: change-of-state 了 (新情况) vs completed-action 了 (做完了). Context and position tell them apart.
    Español

El 了 final puede anunciar una nueva situación — algo ha pasado a ser lo que antes no era. Este "cambio" 了 (a menudo llamado 了₂) es diferente al 了 que marca una acción completada; aquí significa "ahora".

    Estructura: Subject + Adjective + 了 · Subject + Verb + 了

    I我wǒhungry饿è了le。

    Tengo hambre (ahora).

    raining下雨xià yǔ了le。

    Está lloviendo (antes no llovía).

    the baby宝宝bǎo baocan会huìtalk说话shuō huà了le。

    El bebé ya sabe hablar.

Recuerda: este 了 = "ahora, un nuevo estado" (饿了 = "hambre ahora"), no "hizo y terminó". Siempre que agregarías "ahora" en inglés, ese es el 了 que necesitas: 他当经理了 ("él es gerente ahora").

    Precaución

    • Mismo carácter, dos funciones: 了 de cambio de estado (nueva situación) vs 了 de acción completada (terminado). El contexto y la posición los diferencian.
    7.3

    …… 呢? — "¿y tú? / ¿qué hay de …?"

    English

呢 at the end lobs a question back without you having to repeat it — "and …? what about …?" A neat extra: a bare noun + 呢 (with no prior question) asks "where is …?"

    Structure: Topic + 呢?

    I我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎoyou,你nǐ呢ne?

    I'm well — and you?

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jī呢ne?

    Where's my phone?

Remember: 呢 = "…and X?" — it bounces the last question back (你呢? "and you?"). With nothing asked before, noun + 呢 means "where is X?" (钱呢? "where's the money?").

    Watch out

    • It rides on context — without a prior question or a "where is" sense, a bare 呢 has nothing to bounce off.
    Español

呢 al final devuelve una pregunta sin tener que repetirla — "¿y …? ¿qué hay de …?". Un detalle adicional útil: un sustantivo desnudo + 呢 (sin una pregunta previa) pregunta "¿dónde está …?"

    Estructura: Topic + 呢?

    I我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎoyou,你nǐ呢ne?

    Estoy bien — ¿y tú?

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jī呢ne?

    ¿Dónde está mi móvil?

Recuerda: 呢 = "…y X?" — rebota la última pregunta (你呢? "¿y tú?"). Con nada preguntado antes, sustantivo + 呢 significa "¿dónde está X?" (钱呢? "¿dónde está el dinero?").

    Precaución

    • Depende del contexto — sin una pregunta previa o un sentido de "¿dónde está?", un 呢 desnudo no tiene de qué rebotar.

    的 / 得 / 地 — las tres "de" estructurales

    English

Three different characters, all pronounced de, each with exactly one job. Keeping them straight is the single most common slip in written Chinese — so sort them by what comes next.

    Structure: 的 + Noun · Verb + 得 + Complement · Adjective + 地 + Verb

    Watch out

    • A true adverb (不, 也, 都) needs no 地 — only an adjective used adverbially does (认真地, but just 都, never 都地).
    Español

Tres caracteres diferentes, todos pronunciados de, cada uno con exactamente una función. Mantenerlos separados es el error más común en chino escrito — así que ordénalos según lo que viene después.

    Estructura: 的 + Noun · Verb + 得 + Complement · Adjective + 地 + Verb

    you你nǐdid做zuò得devery很hěnwell好hǎobecause,因为yīn wèiyou你nǐcarefully认真rèn zhēn地delistened听课tīng kè。

Sobre — "about, regarding, as for"

    English

关于 (guānyú) flags the topic a sentence is about — "about, regarding, as for." Used this way it opens the sentence, setting the subject up before you say anything about it: "As for X, …".

    Structure: 关于 + Topic ,……

as for关于guān yúChinese中国Zhōng guóhistory历史lì shǐI,我wǒknow知道zhī dào的denot much不多bù duō。

As for Chinese history, I don't know much.

as for关于guān yúyour你nǐ的desuggestion建议jiàn yìthe boss,老板lǎo bǎnstill还hái在zàiconsidering it考虑kǎo lǜ。

As for your suggestion, the boss is still thinking it over.

Remember: 关于 + topic = a headline at the front of the sentence ("Regarding X, …"). It can't sit mid-sentence like English "about."

    Watch out

    • Many English "about"s are baked into the Chinese verb — say 聊你的工作 ("talk about your job"), not 聊关于….
    Español

关于 (guānyú) marca el tema del que trata una oración: "sobre, respecto a, en cuanto a". Se utiliza de esta manera para abrir la oración, presentando el sujeto antes de decir algo sobre él: "En cuanto a X, …".

    Estructura: 关于 + Topic ,……

as for关于guān yúChinese中国Zhōng guóhistory历史lì shǐI,我wǒknow知道zhī dào的denot much不多bù duō。

En cuanto a la historia china, no sé mucho.

as for关于guān yúyour你nǐ的desuggestion建议jiàn yìthe boss,老板lǎo bǎnstill还hái在zàiconsidering it考虑kǎo lǜ。

En cuanto a tu sugerencia, el jefe todavía está considerándola.

Recuerda: 关于 + tema = un encabezado al inicio de la oración ("Respecto a X, …"). No puede colocarse en medio de la oración como ocurre con el inglés "about".

    Cuidado

    • Muchos "about" en inglés están integrados en el verbo chino: di 聊你的工作 ("hablar sobre tu trabajo"), no 聊关于….
    8.2

    Hasta … entonces … — "not until"

    English

直到 (zhídào) means "all the way until (a point)." Pair it with 才 and you get the emphatic "not until X did Y happen" — the 才 is what stamps on the "and that's surprisingly late."

    Structure: 直到 + Time / Event ,Subject + 才 + Verb

not until直到zhí dàohalf past twelve十二点半shí èr diǎn bànI,我wǒonly then才cáifinished做完zuò wánthe homework作业zuò yè。

I didn't finish my homework until half past twelve.

he他tānot until直到zhí dàothe doctor医生yī shēngcame来lái了leonly then,才cáirelaxed放心fàng xīn。

He didn't relax until the doctor came.

Remember: 直到 sets the deadline, 才 delivers the "finally / only then." Drop the 才 and you lose the "annoyingly late" punch.

    Watch out

    • The subject may also go before 直到: 我直到十二点半才….
    Español

直到 (zhídào) significa "hasta (un punto)". Al combinarlo con 才, se obtiene el énfasis de "no hasta que X ocurrió Y": el 才 es lo que resalta que eso fue sorprendentemente tarde.

    Estructura: 直到 + Time / Event ,Subject + 才 + Verb

not until直到zhí dàohalf past twelve十二点半shí èr diǎn bànI,我wǒonly then才cáifinished做完zuò wánthe homework作业zuò yè。

No terminé mi tarea hasta las doce y media.

he他tānot until直到zhí dàothe doctor医生yī shēngcame来lái了leonly then,才cáirelaxed放心fàng xīn。

No se tranquilizó hasta que llegó el médico.

Recuerda: 直到 establece el plazo límite, mientras que 才 introduce el "finalmente / solo entonces". Si omites el 才, pierdes ese matiz de "demasiado tarde".

    Cuidado

    • El sujeto también puede ir antes de 直到: 我直到十二点半才….

Hacia — "towards, to (and sometimes from)"

    English

向 (xiàng) aims an action towards a person or direction — no actual movement required (向他笑, "smile at him"). The twist English speakers must memorise: a few verbs that take "from" in English use 向 ("toward") in Chinese — 向…借钱 ("borrow from"), 向…学习 ("learn from").

    Structure: 向 + Direction / Person + Verb

    向xiàngforward前qiánlook看kàn。

    Look ahead.

    you你nǐmust必须bì xūto向xiànghim他tāapologise道歉dào qiàn!

    You must apologise to him!

    I我wǒdon't不bùlike喜欢xǐ huanfrom向xiàngfriends朋友péng youborrowing money借钱jiè qián。

I don't like borrowing money from friends.

Remember: 向 = an arrow pointing at someone. Even "learn / borrow from" is framed as aiming toward the source in Chinese: 向老师学习 ("learn toward the teacher").

    Watch out

    • Use it with verbs of facing or directing: 向前走 ("walk forward"), 向我求助 ("turn to me for help").
    Español

向 (xiàng) dirige una acción hacia una persona o dirección; no requiere movimiento físico real (向他笑, "sonreírle a él"). La particularidad que los hablantes de inglés deben memorizar es que algunos verbos que usan "from" en inglés utilizan 向 ("toward") en chino: 向…借钱 ("pedir prestado a"), 向…学习 ("aprender de").

    Estructura: 向 + Direction / Person + Verb

    向xiàngforward前qiánlook看kàn。

    Mira hacia adelante.

    you你nǐmust必须bì xūto向xiànghim他tāapologise道歉dào qiàn!

    ¡Debes disculparte con él!

    I我wǒdon't不bùlike喜欢xǐ huanfrom向xiàngfriends朋友péng youborrowing money借钱jiè qián。

No me gusta pedir dinero prestado a los amigos.

Recuerda: 向 = una flecha apuntando a alguien. Incluso "aprender / pedir prestado de" se concibe en chino como dirigir la acción hacia la fuente: 向老师学习 ("aprender dirigiéndose al profesor").

    Cuidado

    • Úsalo con verbos de orientación o dirección: 向前走 ("caminar hacia adelante"), 向我求助 ("recurrir a mí para obtener ayuda").

    看起来 — "looks, seems, appears"

    English

看起来 (kànqǐlái) reports a snap impression from what you can see — "(it) looks / seems / appears" — and comes right before the description. Best of all, the whole sense-family works the same way: swap in 听 ("sounds"), 吃 ("tastes"), 用 ("feels to use") and you've got a free set of patterns.

Structure: Subject + 看起来 + Adjective

the cake蛋糕dàn gāolooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntasty好吃hǎo chī。

    The cake looks delicious.

    he他tālooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntired累lèi。

    He looks tired.

Remember: sense verb + 起来 = "comes across as …". 看起来 (looks), 听起来 (sounds), 吃起来 (tastes), 用起来 (handles) — learn the frame once, reuse it everywhere.

    Watch out

    • For an inferred "it seems" (a conclusion, not a look), reach for 好像 or 似乎 instead.
    Español

看起来 (kànqǐlái) expresa una impresión instantánea basada en lo que se ve — "(se) ve / parece / aparenta" — y va directamente antes de la descripción. Lo mejor de todo es que toda esta familia de palabras funciona igual: cambia por 听 ("suena"), 吃 ("sabe"), 用 ("parece al usarlo") y tendrás un conjunto completo de patrones gratuitos.

Estructura: Subject + 看起来 + Adjective

the cake蛋糕dàn gāolooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntasty好吃hǎo chī。

    El pastel parece delicioso.

    he他tālooks看起来kàn qǐ láivery很hěntired累lèi。

    Él parece cansado.

Recuerda: verbo sensorial + 起来 = "da la impresión de …". 看起来 (parece), 听起来 (suena), 吃起来 (sabe), 用起来 (manejable) — aprende el marco una vez, reutilízalo en todas partes.

    Precaución

    • Para un "parece" inferido (una conclusión, no una apariencia visual), utiliza 好像 o 似乎 en su lugar.
    9.2

    没(有) — "no tan … como" (comparación)

    English

没(有) is the flip side of 比: "A 没有 B + Adjective" means "A is not as [Adjective] as B." Yes — it's the very same 没有 as "not have," moonlighting as a comparison word.

    Structure: Noun 1 + 没(有) + Noun 2 + Adjective

Xiao Zhang小张Xiǎo Zhāngnot as没有méi yǒuXiao Li小李Xiǎo Lǐtall高gāo。

Xiao Zhang isn't as tall as Xiao Li.

    today今天jīn tiānnot as没有méi yǒuyesterday昨天zuó tiāncold冷lěng。

Today isn't as cold as yesterday.

Remember: 比 = "more than"; 没有 = "not as much as." 你比我高 ("you're taller than me") flips to 我没有你高 ("I'm not as tall as you"). Add 那么 for force: 没有他那么忙.

    Watch out

    • The adjective is bare — no 很: 没有你高 ✓, not 没有你很高.
    Español

没(有) es el lado opuesto de 比: "A 没有 B + Adjetivo" significa "A no es tan [Adjetivo] como B." Sí, es exactamente el mismo 没有 de "no tener", actuando ahora también como palabra comparativa.

    Estructura: Noun 1 + 没(有) + Noun 2 + Adjective

Xiao Zhang小张Xiǎo Zhāngnot as没有méi yǒuXiao Li小李Xiǎo Lǐtall高gāo。

Xiao Zhang no es tan alto como Xiao Li.

    today今天jīn tiānnot as没有méi yǒuyesterday昨天zuó tiāncold冷lěng。

    English

These causative verbs slot a person between the verb and what they end up doing — "make / let / ask / cause someone to …." Pick by tone: 让 is the everyday "make / let," 叫 a colloquial "tell," 请 a polite "ask / invite," and 使 a formal, written "cause."

    Structure: Subject + 让 / 叫 / 请 / 使 + Person + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy为什么wèi shén menot不bùlet让ràngme我wǒgo去qù?

Why won't you let me go?

    I我wǒwant想xiǎngto ask请qǐngyou你nǐdo帮bāngme我wǒa一个yí gefavour忙máng。

I'd like to ask you a favour.

Remember: all four mean "get someone to do something," sorted by politeness: 使 (formal) → 让 (neutral, "make/let") → 叫 (casual, "tell") → 请 (polite, "ask/invite"). 让 is your safe default in speech.

    Watch out

    • 让 covers both "make" and "let" — context decides which.
    Español

Estos verbos causativos insertan una persona entre el verbo y lo que termina haciendo — "hacer / dejar / pedir / causar que alguien …". Elige según el tono: 让 es el uso cotidiano de "hacer / dejar", 叫 es un "decir/mandar" coloquial, 请 es un "pedir/invitar" cortés, y 使 es un "causar" formal y escrito.

    Estructura: Subject + 让 / 叫 / 请 / 使 + Person + Predicate

    you你nǐwhy为什么wèi shén menot不bùlet让ràngme我wǒgo去qù?

¿Por qué no me dejas ir?

    I我wǒwant想xiǎngto ask请qǐngyou你nǐdo帮bāngme我wǒa一个yí gefavour忙máng。

    Me gustaría pedirte un favor.

Recuerda: los cuatro significan "conseguir que alguien haga algo", clasificados por cortesía: 使 (formal) → 让 (neutro, "hacer/dejar") → 叫 (informal, "decir/mandar") → 请 (cortés, "pedir/invitar"). 让 es tu opción segura por defecto en el habla cotidiana.

    Precaución

    • 让 cubre tanto "hacer" como "dejar" — el contexto decide cuál es el significado correcto.

经过 — "pasar por / después de atravesar"

    English

经过 (jīngguò) wears two hats. As a verb it means "pass by / through (a place)"; as a preposition it sets up "after going through (a process or time), …" before you state the result.

Structure: 经过 + Place (verb) · 经过 + Process / Time ,Result

I我wǒevery day每天měi tiānto work上班shàng bān都dōupass by经过jīng guòhere这里zhè lǐ。

I pass by here every day on my way to work.

after经过jīng guòhard work努力nǔ lìshe,她tāgot into考上kǎo shàng了leuniversity大学dà xué。

Through hard work, she got into university.

Remember: 经过 always means "go through" — through a place (the verb) or through a process (the preposition). Compare 通过 ("by means of, via"): 经过 rides a journey/process, 通过 rides a method/agent.

    Watch out

    • As a preposition it opens the sentence: 经过 + process, then the result.
    Español

经过 (jīngguò) cumple dos funciones. Como verbo significa "pasar por/a través de (un lugar)"; como preposición, establece "después de pasar por (un proceso o tiempo), …" antes de expresar el resultado.

Estructura: 经过 + Place (verbo) · 经过 + Process / Time ,Result

I我wǒevery day每天měi tiānto work上班shàng bān都dōupass by经过jīng guòhere这里zhè lǐ。

Paso por aquí cada día en camino al trabajo.

after经过jīng guòhard work努力nǔ lìshe,她tāgot into考上kǎo shàng了leuniversity大学dà xué。

Tras mucho esfuerzo, ella logró entrar a la universidad.

Recuerda: 经过 siempre significa "pasar por" — ya sea a través de un lugar (como verbo) o a través de un proceso (como preposición). Compara con 通过 ("por medio de, vía"): 经过 implica un viaje/proceso, mientras que 通过 implica un método/agente.

    Precaución

    • Como preposición, abre la oración: 经过 + proceso, seguido del resultado.

    应该 / 该 — "should, ought to"

    English

应该 (yīnggāi, often clipped to 该) is the everyday "should, ought to" — what's right, advisable, or expected. It's an auxiliary verb, so it leans on the main verb that follows. A handy second meaning: it also covers "ought to be the case / probably" (an expectation, not a duty).

Structure: Subject + 应该 + Verb (+ Object)

    you你nǐshould应该yīng gāimore多duōrest休息xiū xi。

    You should rest more.

    I我wǒshould应该yīng gāigive给gěiyou你nǐhow much多少duō shaomoney钱qián?

    in在zàiChina中国Zhōng guóyou,你nǐshould应该yīng gāitry试试shì shibaijiu白酒bái jiǔ。

In China, you ought to try baijiu.

Remember: 应该 has two flavours — "should" (advice: 你应该休息) and "should be / probably" (expectation: 他应该到了, "he should be there by now"). Same word, told apart by context.

    Watch out

    • Negate with 不应该 ("shouldn't"): 你不应该这样做.
    • The clipped 该 is the casual spoken form: 你该走了 ("you'd better get going").
    Español

应该 (yīnggāi, a menudo abreviado como 该) es el equivalente cotidiano de "debería, debería" — lo que es correcto, aconsejable o esperado. Es un verbo auxiliar, por lo que depende del verbo principal que le sigue. Un segundo significado útil: también cubre "debería ser el caso / probablemente" (una expectativa, no una obligación).

Estructura: Subject + 应该 + Verb (+ Object)

    you你nǐshould应该yīng gāimore多duōrest休息xiū xi。

    Deberías descansar más.

    I我wǒshould应该yīng gāigive给gěiyou你nǐhow much多少duō shaomoney钱qián?

    in在zàiChina中国Zhōng guóyou,你nǐshould应该yīng gāitry试试shì shibaijiu白酒bái jiǔ。

Recuerda: 应该 tiene dos matices — "debería" (consejo: 你应该休息) y "debería ser / probablemente" (expectativa: 他应该到了, "ya debería haber llegado"). Es la misma palabra, pero se distingue por el contexto.

    Precaución

    • Se niega con 不应该 ("no debería"): 你不应该这样做.
    • La forma abreviada 该 es la forma coloquial hablada: 你该走了 ("será mejor que te vayas").

    难 + 动词 — "difícil de …"

    English

Stick 难 ("difficult") in front of a verb and you get "hard to …" — 难学 ("hard to learn"), 难找 ("hard to find"). Its mirror image is 好 ("easy to": 好学 "easy to learn"). With sense verbs, 难 fuses into fixed adjectives: 难吃 ("bad-tasting"), 难听 ("unpleasant to hear").

    Structure: Subject + (很) 难 + Verb

    Chinese is hard to learn.

Remember: 难 = "hard to," 好 = "easy to." Bolt either onto a verb: 难懂 / 好懂 ("hard / easy to understand"), 难看 ("ugly," lit. "hard to look at"), 好看 ("good-looking").

    Watch out

    • With sense verbs it forms set adjectives: 难吃, 难听, 难闻 ("smells bad"), 难看 ("ugly").
    Español

Coloca 难 ("difícil") delante de un verbo y obtienes "difícil de …" — 难学 ("difícil de aprender"), 难找 ("difícil de encontrar"). Su imagen especular es 好 ("fácil de": 好学 "fácil de aprender"). Con verbos sensoriales, 难 se fusiona en adjetivos fijos: 难吃 ("que sabe mal"), 难听 ("que suena desagradable").

    Estructura: Subject + (很) 难 + Verb

    Chinese汉语Hàn yǔvery很hěnhard to难nánlearn学xué。

El chino es difícil de aprender.

    here这里zhè lǐ的decoffee咖啡kā fēivery很hěnbad-tasting难喝nán hē。

Recuerda: 难 = "difícil de," 好 = "fácil de." Pega cualquiera de los dos a un verbo: 难懂 / 好懂 ("difícil / fácil de entender"), 难看 ("feo," lit. "difícil de mirar"), 好看 ("bonito").

    Precaución

    • Con verbos sensoriales forma adjetivos fijos: 难吃, 难听, 难闻 ("huele mal"), 难看 ("feo").

动词 + 了 + 时长 — "hizo … durante (un período de tiempo)"

    English

To say how long a finished action lasted, drop the duration after the verb — Chinese has no "for" preposition, so the word order does the carrying. If there's an object too, slip 的 in front of it.

    Structure: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration (+ 的 + Object)

    he他tāstudied学xué了lea year一年yì niánChinese中文Zhōng wén。

He studied Chinese for a year.

we我们wǒ mentook坐zuò了lefifteen十五个shí wǔ gehours小时xiǎo shí的deflight飞机fēi jī。

    We took a fifteen-hour flight.

Remember: no "for" word — the slot does it. Duration goes after the verb (学了一年, "studied for a year"), and an object hangs off a 的 (看了一天的电视, "watched TV all day").

    Watch out

    • Contrast 一年没学了 ("haven't studied in a year"), where the same duration flips to before the verb.
    Español

Para decir cuánto tiempo duró una acción terminada, coloca la duración después del verbo — el chino no tiene la preposición "for", así que el orden de las palabras lo indica. Si hay también un objeto, coloca 的 antes de él.

    Estructura: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration (+ 的 + Object)

    he他tāstudied学xué了lea year一年yì niánChinese中文Zhōng wén。

Él estudió chino durante un año.

we我们wǒ mentook坐zuò了lefifteen十五个shí wǔ gehours小时xiǎo shí的deflight飞机fēi jī。

Tomamos un vuelo de quince horas.

Recuerda: no hay palabra "for" — ese espacio lo hace. La duración va después del verbo (学了一年, "estudió durante un año"), y un objeto se une con 的 (看了一天的电视, "vi la televisión todo el día").

    Precaución

    • Contrasta con 一年没学了 ("no estudio desde hace un año"), donde la misma duración pasa antes del verbo.
    11.3

    动词 + 了 + 时长 + 了 — "ha estado …ing (y todavía lo está haciendo)"

    English

Tag a second 了 onto the very end and the action stretches up to now and keeps going — "have been …ing for X (and still am)." When the verb has an object, you repeat the verb.

    Structure: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了 · (with object) Subj + Verb + Obj + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了

    he他tāin在zàiBeijing北京Běi jīnghas lived住zhù了letwo years两年liǎng nián了le。

    I我wǒlearning学xuéChinese中文Zhōng wénhave learned学xué了lea year一年yì nián了le。

I've been learning Chinese for a year now.

Remember: one 了 = a finished stretch; two 了 = still going. That trailing 了 means "…and counting." With an object, double the verb: 学中文学了一年了.

    Watch out

    • Without the final 了, 住了两年 reads as "lived there two years (then left)" — the second 了 is the whole "still ongoing" difference.
    Español

Añade un segundo 了 al final y la acción se extiende hasta ahora y continúa — "he estado …ing durante X (y todavía estoy)." Cuando el verbo tiene un objeto, debes repetir el verbo.

    Estructura: Subject + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了 · (con objeto) Subj + Verb + Obj + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了

    he他tāin在zàiBeijing北京Běi jīnghas lived住zhù了letwo years两年liǎng nián了le。

Él ha estado viviendo en Pekín durante dos años (y todavía lo está).

    I我wǒlearning学xuéChinese中文Zhōng wénhave learned学xué了lea year一年yì nián了le。

He estado aprendiendo chino durante un año ya.

Recuerda: un 了 = un periodo terminado; dos 了 = sigue avanzando. Ese ı最后的 了 significa "…y contando". Con un objeto, repite el verbo: 学中文学了一年了.

    Precaución

    • Sin el 最后 了, 住了两年 se lee como "vivió allí dos años (y luego se fue)" — el segundo 了 es toda la diferencia de "todavía en curso".
    11.4

没办法 + 动词 — "sin posibilidad de, no se puede"

    English

Structure: Subject + 没办法 + Verb

Remember: 办法 = "a way / method," so 没办法 = "no way (to)" and 有办法 = "have a way." Alone, 没办法 is the all-purpose "what can you do."

    Watch out

    • It's stronger and more resigned than 不能 — it says the door is simply shut.

    English

A small club of feeling / mental verbs (喜欢, 想, 爱, 希望, 了解, 讨厌 …) act like adjectives and take 很 — which is exactly why beginners end up saying "very like!"

    Structure: Subject + 很 + [feeling verb]

    I我wǒreally很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanthis这部zhè bùfilm电影diàn yǐng。

    I really like this film.

    he他tāwell很hěnunderstands了解liǎo jiěChinese中国Zhōng guóculture文化wén huà。

    He understands Chinese culture well.

Remember: feelings behave like adjectives, so they take 很 (很喜欢, 很想). Action verbs don't — there's no 很吃 or 很走. If it's an emotion or a state of mind, 很 is welcome.

    Watch out

    • As with adjectives, this 很 is often just the plain positive form, not a strong "very."
    Español

Un pequeño grupo de verbos de sentimiento / mentales (喜欢, 想, 爱, 希望, 了解, 讨厌 …) actúan como adjetivos y toman 很 — que es exactamente por qué los principiantes terminan diciendo "muy me gusta!".

    Estructura: Subject + 很 + [feeling verb]

    I我wǒreally很hěnlike喜欢xǐ huanthis这部zhè bùfilm电影diàn yǐng。

    Realmente me gusta esta película.

    he他tāwell很hěnunderstands了解liǎo jiěChinese中国Zhōng guóculture文化wén huà。

Él entiende bien la cultura china.

Recuerda: los sentimientos se comportan como adjetivos, así que toman 很 (很喜欢, 很想). Los verbos de acción no — no existe 很吃 o 很走. Si es una emoción o un estado mental, 很 es bienvenido.

    Precaución

    • Al igual que con los adjetivos, este 很 suele ser simplemente la forma positiva simple, no un "muy" fuerte.

    Verbo + 来 / 去 — Complementos de dirección

    English

Tag 来 ("towards me") or 去 ("away from me") onto a verb to show which way the action moves relative to you, the speaker. These build into handy compounds — 进来 ("come in"), 出去 ("go out"), 起来 ("up"), 过来 ("over here").

    Structure: Verb + 来 / 去 · Verb + compound (上来 / 出去 …)

    I'm我wǒ在zàiupstairs楼上lóu shàngyou,你nǐcome up上来shàng lái。

    I'm upstairs — come up.

    please请qǐngstand站zhànup起来qǐ lái。

    Please stand up.

Remember: 来 = toward me, 去 = away from me — anchored to wherever the speaker stands. 进来 ("come in," I'm inside) vs 进去 ("go in," I'm outside).

    Watch out

    • With a place object, the place sits between the verb and 来 / 去: 回美国去 / 回美国 — never 回去美国.
    Español

Añada 来 ("hacia mí") o 去 ("lejos de mí") a un verbo para indicar la dirección en que se mueve la acción en relación con usted, el hablante. Estos forman compuestos útiles: 进来 ("entrar"), 出去 ("salir"), 起来 ("levantarse"), 过来 ("venir aquí").

    Estructura: Verb + 来 / 去 · Verb + compound (上来 / 出去 …)

    I'm我wǒ在zàiupstairs楼上lóu shàngyou,你nǐcome up上来shàng lái。

    Estoy arriba — sube.

    please请qǐngstand站zhànup起来qǐ lái。

    Por favor, levántese.

Recuerde: 来 = hacia mí, 去 = lejos de mí — anclado a dondequiera que esté parado el hablante. 进来 ("entra," estoy dentro) vs 进去 ("entra," estoy fuera).

    Precaución

    • Con un objeto de lugar, el lugar se sitúa entre el verbo y 来 / 去: 回美国去 / 回美国 — nunca 回去美国.
    12.2

    Verbo + 得 / 不 + Resultado — Complementos de potencialidad

    English

Slot 得 ("can") or 不 ("can't") between a verb and its result to ask whether that result is achievable — 看得懂 ("can understand") vs 看不懂 ("can't"). They're built straight from result complements (懂, 完, 到, 见…).

    Structure: Verb + 得 / 不 + Complement

    you你nǐhear听tīngcan得deunderstand懂dǒngShanghainese上海话Shàng hǎi huà吗ma?

    Can you understand Shanghainese?

this kind of这种zhè zhǒngphone手机shǒu jīnow现在xiàn zàibuy买mǎican't不bùget到dào了le。

You can't get this kind of phone any more.

Remember: 得 = can, 不 = can't, wedged right after the verb (做得好 / 做不好). It asks about reaching a result — subtly different from 能 ("be allowed / have the chance to").

    Watch out

    • The negative 不 form is far more common in speech than the 得 form — you'll hear 看不懂 constantly.
    Español

Inserte 得 ("poder") o 不 ("no poder") entre un verbo y su resultado para preguntar si ese resultado es alcanzable: 看得懂 ("puedo entender") vs 看不懂 ("no puedo entender"). Se construyen directamente a partir de complementos de resultado (懂, 完, 到, 见…).

    Estructura: Verb + 得 / 不 + Complement

    you你nǐhear听tīngcan得deunderstand懂dǒngShanghainese上海话Shàng hǎi huà吗ma?

¿Puedes entender el dialecto de Shanghái?

Recuerde: 得 = poder, 不 = no poder, colocados justo después del verbo (做得好 / 做不好). Preguntan sobre alcanzar un resultado — sutilmente diferente de 能 ("estar autorizado / tener la oportunidad de").

    Precaución

    • La forma negativa con 不 es mucho más común en el habla cotidiana que la forma con 得 — escuchará 看不懂 constantemente.
    12.3

    Verbo + 下去 — "seguir… doing"

    English

The complement 下去 means carry on with something already under way — "keep …ing, go on …ing." Picture the action continuing downward and onward into the future.

Structure: Subject + Verb + 下去

    talk说shuōkeep on下去xià qù。

    Keep talking.

    you你nǐkeep再zàidrinking喝hēon下去xià qùthen就jiùdrunk醉zuì了le。

If you keep drinking, you'll get drunk.

Remember: 下去 = "carry on from here" with something already started. Its potential form 不下去 = "can't carry on": 我听不下去了 ("I can't bear to keep listening").

    Watch out

    • It's specifically about continuing — don't use it to start something.
    Español

El complemento 下去 significa continuar con algo ya en curso — "seguir…, continuar…". Imagine la acción continuando hacia abajo y adelante en el futuro.

Estructura: Subject + Verb + 下去

    talk说shuōkeep on下去xià qù。

    Sigue hablando.

    you你nǐkeep再zàidrinking喝hēon下去xià qùthen就jiùdrunk醉zuì了le。

    Si sigues bebiendo, te emborcharás.

Recuerde: 下去 = "seguir desde aquí" con algo ya iniciado. Su forma potencial 不下去 = "no poder seguir": 我听不下去了 ("No soporto seguir escuchando").

    Precaución

    • Se refiere específicamente a continuar — no lo use para iniciar algo.

    Verbo + 好 / 完 / 错 — Complementos de resultado

    English

A short word right after the verb tells you how it turned out — 完 ("finished"), 好 ("done well / ready"), 错 ("wrong"). It usually takes a 了, and the object is often pulled to the front as a topic.

    Structure: Verb + 好 / 完 / 错 (+ 了)

    You wrote this character wrong.

Remember: the verb is the action, the complement is the outcome. 写 = "write," but 写错 = "wrote wrong," 写完 = "wrote to the finish." Common ones: 完, 好, 错, 懂, 到, 见, 干净, 清楚.

    Watch out

    • Negate the whole thing with 没 (没写完, "didn't finish writing"), not 不.
    Español

Una palabra corta justo después del verbo le indica cómo resultó: 完 ("terminado"), 好 ("bien hecho / listo"), 错 ("mal"). Suele llevar un 了, y el objeto suele moverse al principio como tema.

    Estructura: Verb + 好 / 完 / 错 (+ 了)

    this这个zhè gecharacter字zìwrote写xiěwrong错cuò了le。

    Escribí mal este carácter.

    the room房间fáng jiāncleaned打扫dǎ sǎospotless干净gān jìng了le吗ma?

Recuerde: El verbo es la acción, el complemento es el resultado. 写 = "escribir", pero 写错 = "escribir mal", 写完 = "escribir hasta terminar". Comunes: 完, 好, 错, 懂, 到, 见, 干净, 清楚.

    Precaución

    • Niegue la acción completa con 没 (没写完, "no terminó de escribir"), no con 不.

    只要 … 就 … — "as long as"

    English

只要 … 就 … sets out a sufficient condition — "as long as A, (then) B." A on its own is enough to trigger B, even if it isn't the only route to B. Read 只要 as "you only need…" and 就 as "…then, right away."

    Structure: 只要 + Condition ,就 + Result

as long as只要zhǐ yàoyou你nǐhard努力nǔ lìstudy学习xué xíthen,就jiùwill会huìmake有yǒuprogress进步jìn bù。

As long as you study hard, you'll make progress.

whenever只要zhǐ yàoit rains下雨xià yǔshe,她tāthen就jiùmood心情xīn qíngbad不好bù hǎo。

Whenever it rains, she's in a bad mood.

Remember: 只要 = "you only NEED…" (enough, maybe one of several ways); 只有 = "ONLY if…" (the sole way). 只要 pairs with 就; 只有 pairs with 才. The 一 vs the 才 is the tell — see 只有 below.

    Watch out

    • 只要 reaches for 就 ("then, immediately"); swapping in 才 quietly changes the meaning to "only if."
    Español

只要 … 就 … establece una condición suficiente — "siempre que A, (entonces) B." A por sí solo es suficiente para desencadenar B, incluso si no es la única vía hacia B. Lee 只要 como "solo necesitas…" y 就 como "…entonces, enseguida".

    Estructura: 只要 + Condition ,就 + Result

as long as只要zhǐ yàoyou你nǐhard努力nǔ lìstudy学习xué xíthen,就jiùwill会huìmake有yǒuprogress进步jìn bù。

Siempre que estudies duro, obtendrás progreso.

whenever只要zhǐ yàoit rains下雨xià yǔshe,她tāthen就jiùmood心情xīn qíngbad不好bù hǎo。

Siempre que llueve, ella se pone de mal humor.

Recuerda: 只要 = "solo NECESITAS…" (suficiente, quizás una de varias formas); 只有 = "SOLO SI…" (la única vía). 只要 se empareja con 就; 只有 se empareja con 才. La diferencia entre 一 y 才 es el indicador clave — consulta 只有 a continuación.

    Precaución

    • 只要 busca siempre 就 ("entonces, inmediatamente"); sustituirlo por 才 cambia sutilmente el significado a "solo si".
    13.2

    …… ,才 …… — "solo entonces, solo después de"

    English

才 between two clauses says the second happened only after / only because of the first — usually after real time, money, or effort was spent. English: "not until …, only after …."

    Structure: Condition ,才 + Result

that book那本书nà běn shūI我wǒread看kàn了letwice两遍liǎng biànonly then才cáiunderstood it看懂kàn dǒng。

I only understood that book after reading it twice.

She didn't go to bed until she'd finished her homework.

Remember: 才 spotlights "how much it took" before the result came — two readings, lots of effort, a late hour. The result clause usually ends in a result complement (看懂, 买到), reporting what was finally achieved.

    Watch out

    • This 才 takes no 了 on its verb — the effort, not a tidy completion, is the point.
    Español

才 entre dos cláusulas indica que la segunda ocurrió solo después / solo debido a la primera — generalmente tras haber invertido tiempo real, dinero o esfuerzo. Inglés: "no hasta…, solo después de…".

    Estructura: Condition ,才 + Result

that book那本书nà běn shūI我wǒread看kàn了letwice两遍liǎng biànonly then才cáiunderstood it看懂kàn dǒng。

Solo entendí ese libro después de leerlo dos veces.

she她tāfinished做完zuò wán了lehomework功课gōng kèonly then才cáiwent to bed睡觉shuì jiào。

Ella no se fue a dormir hasta terminar su tarea.

Recuerda: 才 resalta "cuánto tomó" antes de que llegara el resultado — dos lecturas, mucho esfuerzo, hora tardía. La cláusula del resultado suele terminar en un complemento de resultado (看懂, 买到), informando sobre lo que finalmente se logró.

    Precaución

    • Este 才 no lleva 了 en su verbo — el punto es el esfuerzo, no una terminación pulcra.
    13.3

    只有 … 才 … — "solo si"

    English

只有 … 才 … names the one essential condition — "only if A (can) B happen." No A, no B, full stop. The 才 is very often followed by 能.

    Structure: 只有 + Condition ,才(能) + Result

Remember: 只有 = the ONLY door (a necessary condition) → pairs with 才; 只要 = ANY door that works (a sufficient condition) → pairs with 就. Lock the pairs together: 只有…才…, 只要…就….

    Watch out

    • 才 here very often carries 能: 只有…才能….
    Español

只有 … 才 … nombra la única condición esencial — "solo si A (puede) ocurrir B." Sin A, sin B, punto final. El 才 suele ir seguido de 能.

    Estructura: 只有 + Condition ,才(能) + Result

    半 — "half" (y su posición)

    English

The word 半 means "half." The only thing to master is where it sits relative to the measure word, and it follows one clean rule: "half a [unit]" puts 半 first; "[X] and a half" puts 半 after the measure word — exactly where the fraction lands in the English too.

    Structure: 半 + Measure Word + Noun (half a …) · Number + Measure Word + 半 + Noun (X and a half)

    half a半个bàn gehour小时xiǎo shí

    half an hour

    half a bottle of半瓶bàn píngwine酒jiǔ

    half a bottle of wine

    three三个sān geand a half半bànhours小时xiǎo shí

    three and a half hours

Remember: 半 mirrors English word order. "Half an hour" → 半 first (半个小时); "three and a half hours" → 半 after the measure word (三个半小时). Say the English and 半 lands in the same spot.

    Watch out

    • 天 and 年 are themselves measure words — use no 个: 半天 ✓ (not 半个天), 半年 ✓.
    Español

La palabra 半 significa "mitad". Lo único que hay que dominar es dónde se sitúa en relación con el palabra cuantificadora, y sigue una regla clara: "half a [unidad]" coloca 半 al principio; "[X] and a half" coloca 半 después de la palabra cuantificadora — exactamente donde cae la fracción también en inglés.

    Estructura: 半 + Measure Word + Noun (half a …) · Number + Measure Word + 半 + Noun (X and a half)

    half a半个bàn gehour小时xiǎo shí

    half an hour

    half a bottle of半瓶bàn píngwine酒jiǔ

    half a bottle of wine

    three三个sān geand a half半bànhours小时xiǎo shí

    three and a half hours

Recuerda: 半 refleja el orden de palabras del inglés. "Half an hour" → 半 al principio (半个小时); "three and a half hours" → 半 después de la palabra cuantificadora (三个半小时). Di el inglés y 半 caerá en el mismo lugar.

    一 +量词+ 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 … — "ni siquiera uno"

    English

To say not a single one, build a total, emphatic negative: 一 + measure word (+ noun) + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + verb. The 也 / 都 is the muscle here — it's what turns "one" into "not even one." The object can also be pulled to the front as a topic.

    Structure: (Topic +) 一 + MW + (Noun) + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Verb

    he他tāa single一句yí jùword话huàeven都dōudidn't没méisay说shuō。

He didn't say a single word.

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒeven once一次yí cìeven也yěhaven't没méimet见过jiàn guo。

I've never met this person, not even once.

Remember: the shape is "one … not even …" — 一 sets up the smallest possible amount, and 也 / 都 + negative knocks even that out. Drop the 也 / 都 and the "not even" force collapses.

    Watch out

    • 也 and 都 are interchangeable here; for an uncountable "not at all," use 一点也不.
    Español

Para decir ni siquiera uno, se construye una negación total y enfática: 一 (uno) + medida (+ sustantivo) + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + verbo. El 也 / 都 es la clave aquí: es lo que convierte "uno" en "ni siquiera uno". El objeto también puede moverse al principio como tema.

    Estructura: (Topic +) 一 + MW + (Noun) + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Verb

    he他tāa single一句yí jùword话huàeven都dōudidn't没méisay说shuō。

Él no dijo ni una sola palabra.

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒeven once一次yí cìeven也yěhaven't没méimet见过jiàn guo。

Nunca he conocido a esta persona, ni siquiera una vez.

Recuerda: La estructura es "uno … ni siquiera …" — el 一 establece la cantidad más pequeña posible, y el 也 / 都 + negativo elimina incluso eso. Si omites el 也 / 都, se pierde la fuerza de "ni siquiera".

    Precaución

    • 也 y 都 son intercambiables aquí; para un "en absoluto" con incontables, usa 一点也不.
    16.2

    越 … 越 … — "cuanto más … más …"

    English

越 A 越 B ties two things that rise together — "the more A, the more B." Picture two dials geared to the same shaft: turn one up and the other climbs with it. Both halves take 越, and the two clauses can even have different subjects.

    Structure: Subject + 越 + Verb + 越 + Adjective / Verb

    I我wǒthe more越yuèlook看kànthe more越yuèlike it喜欢xǐ huan。

The more I look at it, the more I like it.

you你nǐthe more越yuèpush让ràngthe kid孩子hái zito study学xuéthe kid,孩子hái zithe less越yuèwants to不想bù xiǎngstudy学xué。

The more you push the kid to study, the less he wants to.

Remember: two 越's, rising together. Don't confuse it with 越来越 ("more and more over time," next file): 越…越… links two things, 越来越 tracks one thing across time.

    Watch out

    • Both halves need 越; the second names what grows as the first does.
    • The two halves can have different subjects: 你越说,他越不听.
    Español

越 A 越 B une dos cosas que aumentan juntas: "cuanto más A, más B". Imagina dos perillas engranadas al mismo eje: sube una y la otra sube con ella. Ambas mitades llevan 越, e incluso pueden tener sujetos diferentes.

    Estructura: Subject + 越 + Verb + 越 + Adjective / Verb

    I我wǒthe more越yuèlook看kànthe more越yuèlike it喜欢xǐ huan。

Cuanto más lo miro, más me gusta.

you你nǐthe more越yuèpush让ràngthe kid孩子hái zito study学xuéthe kid,孩子hái zithe less越yuèwants to不想bù xiǎngstudy学xué。

Cuanto más presionas al niño para que estudie, menos quiere hacerlo.

Recuerda: Dos 越, subiendo juntos. No lo confundas con 越来越 ("cada vez más con el tiempo", ver siguiente archivo): 越…越… une dos cosas, mientras que 越来越 rastrea una cosa a través del tiempo.

    Precaución

    • Ambas mitades necesitan 越; la segunda nombra qué crece a medida que crece la primera.
    • Las dos mitades pueden tener sujetos diferentes: 你越说,他越不听 (Cuanto más hablas, él menos escucha).
    16.3

    把 — "tómalo y…" (la construcción 把)

    English

Chinese grammar's famous hurdle — but the core idea is simple. 把 literally means "take / grab," so a 把 sentence is just "take [this specific thing] and [do something] to it." Reach for it when you want to spotlight what happens to an object — where it ends up, how it's changed, what's done with it.

The trap for English speakers: the object jumps in front of the verb, and the verb can never stand alone — it must be followed by the result (a complement, 了, a location…). "把书放" lands on a Chinese ear like "put the book…" and then trailing off.

    Structure: Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + (result) Literally: "I — take — the book — put — on the table." (我把书放在桌子上。)

    please请qǐng把bǎthe door门ménclose关上guān shàng。

    Please close the door.

    she她tā把bǎmy我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīput放fàngin在zàiher bag包里bāo lǐ了le。

She put my phone in her bag.

Remember: 把 carries the hand radical 扌 — picture a hand reaching out, grabbing the object, and dragging it in front of the verb. Grab it → then say what you did to it.

    Watch out

    • The object must be specific / known (the door, my phone), and the verb must report what happened to it — a bare verb won't do: 把书放在桌子上 ✓.
    • Negation goes before 把: 别把它扔了, 没把作业做完 — never inside the 把 phrase.
    • Feeling / perception verbs (喜欢, 想, 看见, 听) can't take 把 — there's no "result" to a feeling.
    • (把 is also a measure word for handled things — 一把伞 "an umbrella" — a different word entirely.)

    she她tā把bǎmy我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīput放fàngin在zàiher bag包里bāo lǐ了le。

    16.4

    被 — "le pasó a" (la pasiva)

    English

A 被 sentence flips the focus to the receiver: "(it) got …ed (by …)." The thing acted upon becomes the subject, and the doer is optional. Like 把, the verb can't stand bare — it needs a result — and 被 sentences lean toward unfortunate events (things done to you).

    Structure: Receiver + 被 + (Doer) + Verb + (了 / result)

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīgot被bèistolen偷tōu了le。

    My phone got stolen.

    he他tāby被bèithe police警察jǐng chácaught抓zhuā了le。

He was caught by the police.

Remember: 把 leads with the doer, 被 leads with the victim. 小偷把手机偷了 ("the thief took the phone") ↔ 手机被小偷偷了 ("the phone got taken by the thief"). 被 even hides 衣 (a quilt/cover) — picture the action laid over the subject.

    Watch out

    • The verb can't be bare — it needs a 了 or result: 咖啡被我喝完了 ✓, not 咖啡被我喝.
    • The doer is optional: 我被骗了 ("I was tricked"), doer unknown or unimportant.
    • Negate before 被: 没被发现 ("wasn't discovered").
    • These sentences usually report something bad happening to the subject.
    Español

Una oración con 被 voltea el enfoque hacia el receptor: "(algo) fue … por …". La cosa afectada se convierte en sujeto, y el agente es opcional. Al igual que 把, el verbo no puede ir desnudo; necesita un resultado, y las oraciones con 被 tienden a describir eventos desafortunados (cosas que te hacen).

    Estructura: Receiver + 被 + (Doer) + Verb + (了 / result)

    my我wǒ的dephone手机shǒu jīgot被bèistolen偷tōu了le。

    Me robaron el teléfono.

    he他tāby被bèithe police警察jǐng chácaught抓zhuā了le。

    English

To paint what is where, Chinese runs place — verb — 着 — thing: "(at the place) there sits / lies / hangs a …." The verb tells you how the thing is positioned (lying, standing, hanging). A close cousin is Place + 是 + thing, meaning "all there is at the place is …."

    Structure: Place + Verb + 着 + Noun Phrase

on the table桌子上zhuō zi shànglies放fàng着zhea一本yì běnbook书shū。

There's a book lying on the table.

in the hall大厅里dà tīng lǐare standing站zhàn着zhesome一些yì xiēpolice警察jǐng chá。

Some police are standing in the hall.

Remember: the place comes first (the camera pans to a spot), then the verb + 着 freezes how the thing sits there. English starts with "there's a …"; Chinese starts with the location.

    Watch out

    • The verb is stative (放, 站, 坐, 挂) — it describes a position, not an active action.
    • The 是 version says the place holds only that: 墙上都是照片 ("the wall is all photos").
    Español

Para expresar qué hay dónde, el chino sigue la estructura Lugar — Verbo — 着 — Cosa: "(en el lugar) hay sentado / tumbado / colgado un …". El verbo indica cómo está situada la cosa (tumbada, de pie, colgada). Un pariente cercano es Lugar + 是 + Cosa, que significa "lo único que hay en el lugar es …".

    Estructura: Place + Verb + 着 + Noun Phrase

on the table桌子上zhuō zi shànglies放fàng着zhea一本yì běnbook书shū。

Hay un libro sobre la mesa.

in the hall大厅里dà tīng lǐare standing站zhàn着zhesome一些yì xiēpolice警察jǐng chá。

Algunos policías están de pie en el vestíbulo.

Recuerda: el lugar va primero (la cámara se enfoca en un punto), luego el verbo + 着 congela cómo queda la cosa allí. En inglés se empieza con "there's a …"; en chino se empieza con la ubicación.

    Precaución

    • El verbo es estativo (放, 站, 坐, 挂) — describe una posición, no una acción activa.
    • La versión con 是 dice que el lugar contiene solo eso: 墙上都是照片 ("la pared está llena de fotos").
    17.2

Querer + Pronombre interrogativo + 就 + Pronombre interrogativo — "hacer lo que quieras"

    English

Echo a question word on both sides of 就 and you get "(do) whatever / wherever / whenever you like." The same question word appears twice — once setting the choice, once cashing it in.

    Structure: 想 + Verb + QW + 就 + Verb + QW

    want想xiǎngeat吃chīwhat什么shén methen就jiùeat吃chīwhatever什么shén me。

    Eat whatever you want.

    want想xiǎnggo去qùwhere哪儿nǎrthen就jiùgo去qùwherever哪儿nǎr。

    Go wherever you like.

Remember: the same question word both times — 什么…就…什么, 谁…就…谁, 哪儿…就…哪儿. Read it as "whatever you pick, that's what you get." It's the language of total freedom.

    Watch out

    • Keep the question word identical on both sides — mixing 什么 with 哪儿 breaks it.
    Español

Repite un pronombre interrogativo a ambos lados de 就 y obtienes "(hacer) lo que / donde / cuando quieras". Aparece el mismo pronombre dos veces — una vez estableciendo la elección, la otra concretándola.

    Estructura: 想 + Verb + QW + 就 + Verb + QW

    want想xiǎngeat吃chīwhat什么shén methen就jiùeat吃chīwhatever什么shén me。

    Come lo que quieras.

    want想xiǎnggo去qùwhere哪儿nǎrthen就jiùgo去qùwherever哪儿nǎr。

    Ve a donde quieras.

Recuerda: el mismo pronombre ambas veces — 什么…就…什么, 谁…就…谁, 哪儿…就…哪儿. Lérilo como "lo que elijas, eso es lo que obtendrás". Es el lenguaje de la libertad total.

    Precaución

    • Mantén el pronombre interrogativo idéntico en ambos lados — mezclar 什么 con 哪儿 rompe la regla.
    17.3

    Pronombre interrogativo + 都 / 也 — "todo / cualquier"

    English

A question word + 都 (or 也) sweeps over all cases — "everyone, anything, anywhere." Add a 不 / 没 and it flips to the total negative: "none, nothing, nowhere."

    Structure: Question Word + 都 / 也 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéiall都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

    Everyone loves good food.

    I我wǒanything什么shén meat all都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto eat吃chī。

I don't want to eat anything.

Remember: question word + 都 = "all / every"; add 不 / 没 = "none / nothing." 谁都喜欢 ("everyone likes") → 谁都不信 ("nobody believes"). 也 stands in for 都, especially in negatives (什么也没说, "said nothing").

    Watch out

    • The question word here is not asking anything — it's the indefinite "any," swept up by 都 / 也.
    Español

Un pronombre interrogativo + 都 (o 也) abarca todos los casos — "todo el mundo, cualquier cosa, cualquier lugar". Añade un 不 / 没 y se invierte al negativo total: "ninguno, nada, ningún lugar".

    Estructura: Question Word + 都 / 也 + Predicate

    everyone谁shéiall都dōulikes喜欢xǐ huangood food美食měi shí。

A todo el mundo le encanta la buena comida.

    I我wǒanything什么shén meat all都dōudon't不bùwant想xiǎngto eat吃chī。

    No quiero comer nada.

Recuerda: pronombre interrogativo + 都 = "todo / cada uno"; añadir 不 / 没 = "ninguno / nada". 谁都喜欢 ("a todo el mundo le gusta") → 谁都不信 ("nadie cree"). 也 sustituye a 都, especialmente en negaciones (什么也没说, "no dijo nada").

    Precaución

    • Aquí el pronombre interrogativo no está haciendo una pregunta; es el indefinido "cualquier", abarcado por 都 / 也.
    17.4

越来越 + Adjetivo — "cada vez más"

    English

越来越 before an adjective (or verb) means a quality keeps climbing as time passes — "more and more …." Literally "more-comes-more." It usually closes with 了 to mark the change in motion.

    Structure: Subject + 越来越 + Adjective + 了

the weather天气tiān qìmore and more越来越yuè lái yuècold冷lěng了le。

The weather is getting colder and colder.

I我wǒmore and more越来越yuè lái yuèdon't不bùtrust相信xiāng xìnhim他tā了le。

I trust him less and less.

Remember: 越来越 = "more-comes-more" — one thing changing over time. Its look-alike 越…越… (previous file) links two things ("the more A, the more B"). Time → 越来越; pairing → 越…越….

    Watch out

    • With a negative verb, English flips to "less and less": 越来越不懂 ("understand less and less").
    Español

越来越 antes de un adjetivo (o verbo) significa que una cualidad sigue subiendo con el paso del tiempo — "cada vez más …". Literalmente "más-viene-más". Suele cerrar con 了 para marcar el cambio de movimiento.

    Estructura: Subject + 越来越 + Adjective + 了

the weather天气tiān qìmore and more越来越yuè lái yuècold冷lěng了le。

El tiempo se está poniendo cada vez más frío.

I我wǒmore and more越来越yuè lái yuèdon't不bùtrust相信xiāng xìnhim他tā了le。

Cada vez confío menos en él.

Recuerda: 越来越 = "más-viene-más" — algo cambiando a lo largo del tiempo. Su homónimo 越…越… (archivo anterior) vincula dos cosas ("cuanto más A, más B"). Tiempo → 越来越; pareja → 越…越….

    Precaución

    • Con un verbo negativo, en inglés se invierte a "cada vez menos": 越来越不懂 ("entiendo cada vez menos").
    17.5

Pronombre interrogativo — "algún / cierto"

    English

A bare question word can quietly mean a vague "some / a certain" — 哪儿 ("somewhere"), 谁 ("someone"), 什么 ("something"), 什么时候 ("sometime"). It isn't a question at all; tone and small cues (过, 点儿, 吧) flag the difference.

Structure: Question Word (used as "some")

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒ在zàisomewhere哪儿nǎrhave met见过jiàn guo。

I've met this person somewhere before.

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāido做zuòa bit of点儿diǎnrsomething什么shén me。

    We should do something.

Remember: a question word with no rising "question" tone = "some." 谁 ("who?") vs 谁 ("someone"); 什么 ("what?") vs 什么 ("something"). Cues like 过, 点儿, or 吧 confirm the "some" reading — 什么时候…吧 = "sometime," not "when?".

    Watch out

    • Context does the work — there's no extra word; only the falling tone and the cues distinguish "some" from a real question.
    Español

Un pronombre interrogativo desnudo puede significar silenciosamente un vago "algún / cierto" — 哪儿 ("en algún lugar"), 谁 ("alguien"), 什么 ("algo"), 什么时候 ("en algún momento"). No es una pregunta en absoluto; el tono y pequeñas señales (过, 点儿, 吧) marcan la diferencia.

Estructura: Question Word (used as "some")

this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒ在zàisomewhere哪儿nǎrhave met见过jiàn guo。

He conocido a esta persona en algún lugar antes.

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāido做zuòa bit of点儿diǎnrsomething什么shén me。

    17.6

为了 — "con el fin de, para"

    English

为了 spells out a purpose or beneficiary — "in order to, for the sake of." It usually opens the sentence ("In order to X, …"), or appears as "… 是为了 …" ("the reason is to …").

Structure: 为了 + Purpose ,Subject + Action · Action + 是为了 + Purpose

for the sake of为了wèi lemoney钱qiánhe,他tāanything什么shén meat all都dōuis willing愿意yuàn yìto do做zuò。

    For money, he'll do anything.

I我wǒ这么zhè medid this做zuò是shìin order to为了wèi lehelp帮bāngyou你nǐ。

I did all this in order to help you.

Remember: 为了 = the goal you're aiming AT (forward-looking); 因为 = the cause you're coming FROM (backward-looking). "为了 health, I exercise" (purpose) vs "因为 I'm ill, I rest" (reason). The 了 here is glued into the word — not the aspect particle.

    Watch out

    • The 为了 phrase usually sits at the front of the sentence.
    Español

为了 expone un propósito o beneficiario — "con el fin de, para". Generalmente abre la oración ("Con el fin de X, …"), o aparece como "… 是为了 …" ("la razón es …").

Estructura: 为了 + Purpose ,Subject + Action · Action + 是为了 + Purpose

for the sake of为了wèi lemoney钱qiánhe,他tāanything什么shén meat all都dōuis willing愿意yuàn yìto do做zuò。

I我wǒ这么zhè medid this做zuò是shìin order to为了wèi lehelp帮bāngyou你nǐ。

Hice todo esto con el fin de ayudarte.

Recuerda: 为了 = la meta hacia la que apuntas (mirando hacia adelante); 因为 = la causa desde la que vienes (mirando hacia atrás). "为了 salud, hago ejercicio" (propósito) vs "因为 estoy enfermo, descanso" (razón). El 了 aquí forma parte inseparable de la palabra — no es la partícula de aspecto.

    Precaución

    • La frase 为了 generalmente ocupa la posición inicial de la oración.

    跟 … 比(起来) — "compared with"

    English

To lead with a comparison, open with 跟 A 比(起来), then comment on B — "compared with A, B is …." It sets the yardstick first, then makes the point. (跟 ≈ 和 here; 跟 is slightly more common.) B can also start the sentence.

    Structure: 跟 + A + 比(起来) ,B + Comment

    compared with跟gēnShanghai上海Shàng hǎi比bǐmy,我wǒhometown老家lǎo jiā的deprices物价wù jiàvery很hěnlow低dī。

Compared with Shanghai, prices in my hometown are very low.

the younger sister妹妹mèi meicompared with跟gēnthe elder姐姐jiě jie比起来bǐ qǐ láia bit有点yǒu diǎnshy害羞hài xiū。

Compared with her elder sister, the younger one is a bit shy.

Remember: 跟 A 比 = "holding it up against A…" — the benchmark first, the verdict second. Note that unlike a bare 比 sentence, this framing allows 很 (物价很低), because it's a comment, not a direct A-比-B.

    Watch out

    • For a plain "A is more X than B," the basic 比 is enough: A比B高.
    Español

Para comenzar con una comparación, abre con 跟 A 比(起来), luego comenta sobre B — "en comparación con A, B es…". Establece la referencia primero y luego formula el punto. (跟 ≈ 和 aquí; 跟 es ligeramente más común). B también puede iniciar la oración.

    Estructura: 跟 + A + 比(起来) ,B + Comment

    compared with跟gēnShanghai上海Shàng hǎi比bǐmy,我wǒhometown老家lǎo jiā的deprices物价wù jiàvery很hěnlow低dī。

En comparación con su hermana mayor, la menor es un poco tímida.

Recuerda: 跟 A 比 = "contrastándolo con A…" — primero la referencia, luego el veredicto. Ten en cuenta que, a diferencia de una oración simple con 比, este marco permite 很 (物价很低), porque se trata de un comentario y no de una comparación directa A-比-B.

    Precaución

    • Para una simple "A es más X que B", basta con el 比 básico: A比B高.
    18.2

    比 … 更 / 还 — "incluso más"

    English

In a 比 comparison, drop 更 or 还 before the adjective to mean the first thing is even more so — often with a sly hint that "(B is already very …, and A beats it)."

    Structure: Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + 更 / 还 + Adjective

    Shanghai上海Shàng hǎithan比bǐNew York纽约Niǔ yuēpopulation人口rén kǒueven更gèngbigger多duō。

Shanghai's population is even bigger than New York's.

He's even taller than Yao Ming.

Remember: 更 / 还 = "even more." 还 especially smuggles in "(and the other is already sky-high)" — 比姚明还高 quietly admits Yao Ming is already a giant. Crucial rule: a 比 sentence never takes 很 / 非常 — degree comes from 更 / 还 / 多了.

    Watch out

    • 比 + 很 is a classic mistake: say 比他高 or 比他更高, never 比他很高.
    Español

En una comparación con 比, coloca 更 o 还 antes del adjetivo para indicar que la primera cosa lo es incluso más — a menudo con una sutil sugerencia de que "(B ya es muy…, y A le gana)".

    Estructura: Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + 更 / 还 + Adjective

    Shanghai上海Shàng hǎithan比bǐNew York纽约Niǔ yuēpopulation人口rén kǒueven更gèngbigger多duō。

La población de Shanghái es incluso mayor que la de Nueva York.

    he他tāthan比bǐYao Ming姚明Yáo Míngeven还háitaller高gāo。

Él es incluso más alto que Yao Ming.

Recuerda: 更 / 还 = "incluso más." 还 introduce especialmente la idea de "(y el otro ya es altísimo)": 比姚明还高 admite tácitamente que Yao Ming ya es un gigante. Regla crucial: una oración con 比 nunca lleva 很 / 非常 — el grado proviene de 更 / 还 / 多了.

    Precaución

    • 比 + 很 es un error clásico: di 比他高 o 比他更高, nunca 比他很高.
    18.3

    比 … 形容词 + 多了 — "mucho más"

    English

To stress a big gap, close a 比 comparison with 多了 (or 得多 / 很多) — "much more …." 多了 also works on its own: 好多了 ("much better").

    Structure: Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + Adjective + 多了 / 得多 / 很多

Remember: size the gap at the end: big gap → 多了 / 得多 / 很多; small gap → 一点 (容易一点, "a little easier"). And, again, never 很 / 非常 inside a 比 sentence.

    Watch out

    • 多了 / 得多 / 很多 all sit after the adjective: 高多了, 高得多 — never 多了高.
    Español

Para enfatizar una gran diferencia, cierra una comparación con 比 usando 多了 (o 得多 / 很多) — "mucho más…". 多了 también funciona solo: 好多了 ("mucho mejor").

Recuerda: evalúa la magnitud al final: gran diferencia → 多了 / 得多 / 很多; pequeña diferencia → 一点 (容易一点, "un poco más fácil"). Y, nuevamente, nunca uses 很 / 非常 dentro de una oración con 比.

    Precaución

    • 多了 / 得多 / 很多 van siempre después del adjetivo: 高多了, 高得多 — nunca 多了高.

    A + 有 + B + 形容词 + 吗? — "¿tan…como?"

    English

有 can do more than "have" — in a comparison it means "as … as": "A 有 B + Adj" = "A is as [Adj] as B." It lives mostly in questions, where B is the benchmark you're measuring against, often with 这么 / 那么.

    Structure: A + 有 + B + (这么 / 那么) + Adjective + 吗?

    he他tāas有yǒume我wǒhandsome帅shuài吗ma?

Is he as handsome as me?

    he他tāas有yǒuYao Ming姚明Yáo Míngthat那么nà metall高gāo吗ma?

Is he really as tall as Yao Ming?

Remember: 有 = "reaches as far as" (as … as); 没有 = "falls short of" (not as … as). The question 有…吗? asks "does A measure up to B?"; the answer is 有 / 没有 (没有你帅, "not as handsome as you").

    Watch out

    • Used mainly in questions and negatives, not plain statements. For a plain statement use 跟…一样 ("the same as") or 比 ("more than").
    Español

有 hace más que "tener": en una comparación significa "tan…como": "A 有 B + Adj" = "A es tan [Adj] como B." Se usa principalmente en preguntas, donde B es la referencia contra la cual mides, a menudo acompañada de 这么 / 那么.

    Estructura: A + 有 + B + (这么 / 那么) + Adjective + 吗?

    he他tāas有yǒume我wǒhandsome帅shuài吗ma?

¿Es él tan guapo como yo?

    he他tāas有yǒuYao Ming姚明Yáo Míngthat那么nà metall高gāo吗ma?

除了 … (以外) — "except" or "besides"

    English

Here's a word that means two opposite things depending on its partner. 除了 X (以外) sets X aside; then the adverb in the second clause decides what happens to it. With 都, X is left out ("everyone except X"); with 还 / 也, X is kept and more is piled on ("besides X, also …"). The 以外 is optional.

    Structure: 除了 + X (+ 以外) ,Subject + 都 / 也 / 还 …

Besides Chinese, he also speaks Japanese.

Remember: the second word flips the meaning. 除了…都 = "except" (X is thrown out); 除了…还 / 也 = "besides" (X stays, plus more). Read on to the 都 / 还 before you decide which "除了" it is.

    Watch out

    • 以外 (or 之外) is optional and changes nothing.
    Español

Aquí hay una palabra que significa dos cosas opuestas dependiendo de su compañero. 除了 X (以外) deja a X a un lado; entonces el adverbio en la segunda cláusula decide qué sucede con él. Con 都, X es excluido ("todos excepto X"); con 还 / 也, X se mantiene y se añade más ("además de X, también …"). El 以外 es opcional.

    如果 … 的话 — "if"

    English

如果 … 的话 wraps a condition — "if …." Think of 的话 as a spoken bracket that closes the if-clause: 如果 opens it, 的话 shuts it. The 的话 is conversational and optional — and it can even appear with no 如果 at all.

    Structure: 如果 + Condition + 的话 ,(就) + Result

Remember: 如果 and 的话 are a pair of brackets around the condition — and Chinese lets you use either or both. You can even drop both and just imply the "if": 有事给我打电话 ("call me if anything comes up").

    Watch out

    • 的话 is conversational — fine to drop it and keep just 如果 … 就 ….

如果 … 的话 encierra una condición — "si …." Piensa en 话 como un paréntesis hablado que cierra la cláusula condicional: 如果 la abre, 话 la cierra. El 话 es conversacional y opcional — e incluso puede aparecer sin 如果.

    Estructura: 如果 + Condition + 的话 ,(就) + Result

if如果rú guǒtomorrow明天míng tiānrains下雨xià yǔ的话de huàwe,我们wǒ menthen就jiùnot不bùgo去qù了le。

    Si llueve mañana, no iremos.

    not不bùwant to想xiǎnggo去qùif的话de huàthen就jiùdon't别biégo去qù了le。

If you don't feel like going, then don't.

Recuerda: 如果 y 话 son un par de corchetes alrededor de la condición — y el chino te permite usar uno u otro, o ambos. Incluso puedes omitirlos y simplemente implicar el "si": 有事给我打电话 ("llámame si surge algo").

    Precaución

    • 话 es conversacional — está bien omitirlo y dejar solo 如果 … 就 ….
    19.3

    如果 … 就 … — "if … then …"

    English

The backbone conditional is 如果 … 就 … — "if A, then B." The key placement rule: 就 lives in the second clause, opening the result — not next to 如果.

    Structure: 如果 + Condition ,就 + Result

    if如果rú guǒhave有yǒudifficulty困难kùn nánthen,就jiù给gěime我wǒcall打电话dǎ diàn huà。

If you run into any trouble, then call me.

    if如果rú guǒhe他tāknew知道zhī dàothen,那nàhe他tāsurely一定yí dìngwould会huìtell告诉gào sume我wǒ。

If he knew, he'd surely tell me.

Remember: 如果 opens the "if," 就 opens the "then" — and 就 always rides with the result, hugging its verb. 那(么) can stand in for 就 with an "in that case" flavour.

    Watch out

    • Don't park 就 next to 如果 — it belongs in the second clause, before its verb.
    Español

La estructura condicional básica es 如果 … 就 … — "si A, entonces B." La regla clave de posición: 就 vive en la segunda cláusula, abriendo el resultado — no junto a 如果.

    Estructura: 如果 + Condition ,就 + Result

    if如果rú guǒhave有yǒudifficulty困难kùn nánthen,就jiù给gěime我wǒcall打电话dǎ diàn huà。

Si tienes algún problema, entonces llámame.

    if如果rú guǒhe他tāknew知道zhī dàothen,那nàhe他tāsurely一定yí dìngwould会huìtell告诉gào sume我wǒ。

If he knew, he'd surely tell me.

Recuerda: 如果 abre el "si," 就 abre el "entonces" — y 就 siempre acompaña al resultado, pegado a su verbo. 那(么) puede sustituir a 就 con un matiz de "en ese caso".

    Precaución

    • No pongas 就 junto a 如果 — pertenece a la segunda cláusula, antes de su verbo.
    19.4

    不但 … 而且 … — "not only … but also …"

    English

不但 … 而且 … stacks a second, stronger point on the first — "not only A, but also B." The two halves share the same subject, and B should push further than A (more extreme, more surprising).

    Structure: Subject + 不但 + A ,而且 + B

this这个zhè gething东西dōng xinot only不但bú dànexpensive贵guìbut also,而且ér qiěhard难nánto buy买mǎi。

This thing is not only expensive, but also hard to get.

this这道zhè dàodish菜càinot only不但bú dànpretty好看hǎo kànalso,也yětasty好吃hǎo chī。

This dish isn't only pretty, it's tasty too.

    Remember: 不但 = "not only," 而且 = "but also," and B must out-do A (escalate, don't just repeat). 而且 swaps freely for 也 / 还: 不但…也…, 不但…还….

    Watch out

    • Keep one subject across both halves (他不但…,而且…); if the subject changes, 不但 moves in front of the subject (不但他来了,而且…).
    Español

不但 … 而且 … apila un segundo punto, más fuerte sobre el primero — "no solo A, sino también B." Las dos mitades comparten el mismo sujeto, y B debe ir más allá de A (más extremo, más sorprendente).

    Estructura: Subject + 不但 + A ,而且 + B

this这个zhè gething东西dōng xinot only不但bú dànexpensive贵guìbut also,而且ér qiěhard难nánto buy买mǎi。

Esta cosa no solo es cara, sino que además es difícil de conseguir.

this这道zhè dàodish菜càinot only不但bú dànpretty好看hǎo kànalso,也yětasty好吃hǎo chī。

Este plato no solo es bonito, sino que también está rico.

Recuerda: 不但 = "no solo," 而且 = "sino también," y B debe superar a A (escalar, no solo repetir). 而且 se intercambia libremente con 也 / 还: 不但…也…, 不但…还….

    Precaución

    • Mantén un solo sujeto en ambas mitades (他不但…,而且…); si el sujeto cambia, 不但 va delante del sujeto (不但他来了,而且…).

    才 vs 就 — "tarde / difícil" vs "temprano / fácil"

    English

These two adverbs are a matched pair pulling in opposite directions. Both sit before the verb after a time or condition, but 才 says something happened later or with more effort than expected (often a touch impatient), while 就 says it happened sooner or more easily than expected.

the boss老板lǎo bǎneleven十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáiarrived到dào。

The boss didn't get in until eleven.

    he他tāsix六点liù diǎnalready就jiùarrived到dào了le。

He was already here by six.

Remember: 才 drags late (no 了); 就 jumps early (+ 了). A neat tell: the 了 lines up with 就 ("already happened, 就到了") and avoids 才 ("late, nothing tidily completed, 才到").

    Watch out

    • 才 = slower / later / harder than expected (sometimes annoyed); 就 = faster / earlier / easier.
    • The verb after 才 takes no 了; 就 in the "already" sense usually does.
    Español

Estos dos adverbios son un par emparejado que tira en direcciones opuestas. Ambos se sitúan antes del verbo tras un tiempo o una condición, pero 才 indica que algo ocurrió más tarde o con más esfuerzo del esperado (a menudo con un toque de impaciencia), mientras que 就 indica que ocurrió más pronto o con más facilidad del esperado.

the boss老板lǎo bǎneleven十一点shí yī diǎnnot until才cáiarrived到dào。

El jefe no llegó hasta las once.

    he他tāsix六点liù diǎnalready就jiùarrived到dào了le。

Él ya estaba aquí a las seis.

Recuerda: 才 arrastra la tardanza (sin 了); 就 salta al anticipado (+ 了). Una pista clara: el 了 se alinea con 就 ("ya pasó, 就到了") y evita 才 ("tarde, nada completo de forma ordenada, 才到").

    Precaución

    • 才 = más lento / más tarde / más difícil de lo esperado (a veces molesto); 就 = más rápido / más temprano / más fácil.
    • El verbo después de 才 no lleva 了; 就 en el sentido de "ya" generalmente sí lo lleva.
    20.2

刚 vs 刚才 — adverbio vs palabra de tiempo

    English

Same "just," two different word-classes. 刚 is an adverb ("just," sitting right before the verb); 刚才 is a time noun ("a moment ago," roughly the last 1–30 minutes) that can stand on its own and even modify a noun.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnjust刚gāngleft走zǒu。

    The boss just left.

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    What did you just say?

Remember: 刚 = adverb, glued to the verb (刚到); 刚才 = noun, free-standing (刚才的事, "the thing just now"). 刚 often skips 了 when the verb already carries a result; 刚才 is firmly past and pairs with 了.

    Watch out

    • Before an adjective, only 刚 / 刚刚 works: 天刚晴 ("the sky just cleared") — never 刚才晴.
    Español

Mismo "acabar de", dos clases gramaticales distintas. 刚 es un adverbio ("acabar de", situándose justo antes del verbo); 刚才 es un sustantivo de tiempo ("hace un momento", aproximadamente los últimos 1–30 minutos) que puede funcionar por sí solo e incluso modificar un sustantivo.

    the boss老板lǎo bǎnjust刚gāngleft走zǒu。

El acaba de irse el jefe.

    you你nǐjust now刚才gāng cáisaid说shuōwhat什么shén me了le?

    ¿Qué acabas de decir?

Recuerda: 刚 = adverbio, pegado al verbo (刚到); 刚才 = sustantivo, independiente (刚才的事, "lo que fue hace un momento"). 刚 suele omitir 了 cuando el verbo ya lleva un resultado; 刚才 está firmemente en pasado y va acompañado de 了.

    Precaución

    • Antes de un adjetivo, solo funciona 刚 / 刚刚: 天刚晴 ("el cielo acababa de despejarse") — nunca 刚才晴.
    20.3

有点 vs 一点 — "un poco demasiado" vs "un poco (más)"

    English

Both translate as "a bit," but they sit on opposite sides of the adjective and carry opposite moods. 有点(儿) goes before an adjective with a hint of complaint ("a bit too …"); 一点(儿) goes after an adjective to mark a small amount or degree (in comparisons or requests).

    today今天jīn tiānI'm我wǒa bit有点yǒu diǎntired累lèi。

    I'm a bit tired today.

    please请qǐngspeak说shuōslowly慢màna little一点yì diǎn。

Please speak a little more slowly.

Remember: 有点 + Adj = a grumble before ("a bit too tired"); Adj + 一点 = a measured amount after ("a little slower"). Position tells you the mood: before = complaint, after = neutral nudge.

    Watch out

    • 一点 + Noun = "a little (of)": 一点水, 一点钱 — 有点 can't do this.
    • 一点也不 / 一点也没 = "not at all": 一点也不辣.
    Español

Ambos se traducen como "un poco", pero se sitúan en lados opuestos del adjetivo y cargan con moods opuestos. 有点(儿) va antes de un adjetivo con una ligera carga de queja ("un poco demasiado …"); 一点(儿) va después de un adjetivo para marcar una pequeña cantidad o grado (en comparaciones o peticiones).

    today今天jīn tiānI'm我wǒa bit有点yǒu diǎntired累lèi。

    Hoy estoy un poco cansado.

    please请qǐngspeak说shuōslowly慢màna little一点yì diǎn。

Por favor, habla un poco más despacio.

Recuerda: 有点 + Adj = una queja antes ("un poco demasiado cansado"); Adj + 一点 = una cantidad medida después ("un poco más lento"). La posición te dice el mood: antes = queja, después = sugerencia neutral.

    Precaución

    • 一点 + Sustantivo = "un poco (de)": 一点水, 一点钱 — 有点 no puede hacer esto.
    • 一点也不 / 一点也没 = "para nada": 一点也不辣.

再 vs 又 — futuro vs pasado "otra vez"

    English

Both mean "again," but they split cleanly on time: 再 is "again" for something not yet done (a future or intended repeat); 又 is "again" for something that has already happened.

    welcome欢迎huān yíngagain再zàicome来lái!

    Come again!

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    You're late again.

Remember: 再 looks forward (plan/intend, no 了); 又 looks back (already repeated, usually + 了). 欢迎再来 (please come again) vs 你又来了 (here you are again). The 了 sides with 又.

    Watch out

    • 再 also means "another" (再来一个) and "(do A) then (B)" (先…再…); 又 also stacks qualities (又高又帅).
    Español

Ambos significan "otra vez", pero se separan claramente según el tiempo: 再 es "otra vez" para algo que aún no ha sucedido (una repetición futura o intencionada); 又 es "otra vez" para algo que ya ha ocurrido.

    welcome欢迎huān yíngagain再zàicome来lái!

    ¡Vuelva usted!

    you你nǐagain又yòulate迟到chí dào了le。

    Tienes retraso de nuevo.

Recuerda: 再 mira hacia adelante (plan/intención, sin 了); 又 mira hacia atrás (ya repetido, generalmente + 了). 欢迎再来 (por favor vuelva) vs 你又来了 (aquí tienes de nuevo). El 了 se alinea con 又.

    Precaución

    • 再 también significa "otro/a" (再来一个) y "(hacer A) luego (B)" (先…再…); 又 también apila cualidades (又高又帅).

还是 vs 或者 — "or" en preguntas y afirmaciones

    English

This is the single most-tested "or" distinction in Chinese, so make it automatic. Both words mean "or" and present a choice, but they split by sentence type: 还是 offers the choice in a question (you're asking someone to pick); 或者 lists alternatives in a statement (you're just telling).

    you你nǐdrink喝hētea茶cháor还是hái shìcoffee咖啡kā fēi?

Do you want tea or coffee?

    tea茶cháor或者huò zhěcoffee咖啡kā fēieither都dōuis fine行xíng。

Tea or coffee — either's fine.

    I我wǒdon't不bùknow知道zhī dàohe他tāsupports支持zhī chíor还是hái shìopposes反对fǎn duì。

I don't know whether he's for or against.

Remember: ? → 还是, . → 或者. Asking someone to choose takes 还是; stating open options takes 或者. And a hidden question — "I don't know whether A or B" — still counts as a question inside, so it keeps 还是.

    Watch out

    • That embedded-question case (不知道…还是…) trips people up — there's no question mark, but the choice is still being asked, so 还是 stays.
    Español

Esta es la distinción de "or" más evaluada en chino, así que hazla automática. Ambas palabras significan "o" y presentan una elección, pero se dividen según el tipo de oración: 还是 ofrece la opción en una pregunta (le estás pidiendo a alguien que elija); 或者 enumera alternativas en una afirmación (simplemente estás informando).

    you你nǐdrink喝hētea茶cháor还是hái shìcoffee咖啡kā fēi?

    ¿Quieres té o café?

    tea茶cháor或者huò zhěcoffee咖啡kā fēieither都dōuis fine行xíng。

Té o café — cualquiera está bien.

    I我wǒdon't不bùknow知道zhī dàohe他tāsupports支持zhī chíor还是hái shìopposes反对fǎn duì。

No sé si apoya u opone.

Recuerda: ? → 还是, . → 或者. Pedirle a alguien que elija requiere 还是; expresar opciones abiertas como afirmación requiere 或者. Y una pregunta implícita — "No sé si A o B" — sigue siendo una pregunta interna, por lo que conserva 还是.

    Ten cuidado

    • El caso de la pregunta incrustada (不知道…还是…) suele confundir — no hay signo de interrogación, pero la elección sigue estando siendo preguntada, por lo que 还是 permanece.

以后 vs 然后 vs 后来 — tres tipos de "después / luego"

    English

All three brush against "after / then," but each owns a different slot — so the trick is to match the situation to the word:

    • 以后 — "after / from now on," and it can point to the future: 以后想开公司 ("I want to start a company someday").
    • 然后 — "and then," joining the next step in a sequence (any time frame): 先吃饭,然后看电影.
    • 后来 — "later, afterwards," narrating the next thing that happened — in the past only.

I我wǒin future以后yǐ hòuwant to想xiǎngstart开kāia company公司gōng sī。

I want to start a company someday.

first先xiāneat吃饭chī fànand then,然后rán hòuwatch看kàna film电影diàn yǐng。

Eat first, and then watch a film.

    later后来hòu láihe他tāwent去qù了lethe US美国Měi guó。

Later he went to the US.

Remember: the quick test — future → 以后, next step → 然后, past story → 后来. Only 后来 is locked to the past; 以后 can reach into the future, and 然后 chains steps in any time frame.

    Watch out

    • 以后 and 后来 can both translate as "later," but 后来 only narrates what has already happened — never a future "then."

I我wǒin future以后yǐ hòuwant to想xiǎngstart开kāia company公司gōng sī。

Quiero fundar una empresa algún día.

first先xiāneat吃饭chī fànand then,然后rán hòuwatch看kàna film电影diàn yǐng。

Come primero, y luego ve una película.

    later后来hòu láihe他tāwent去qù了lethe US美国Měi guó。

Más tarde él fue a EE.UU.

Recuerda: La prueba rápida es: futuro → 以后, siguiente paso → 然后, relato pasado → 后来. Solo 后来 está vinculado al pasado; 以后 puede abarcar el futuro, y 然后 encadena pasos en cualquier marco temporal.

    Precaución

    • 以后 y 后来 pueden traducirse ambos como "más tarde", pero 后来 solo narra lo que ya ha ocurrido — nunca un "luego" futuro.
