What this topic teaches

Los adverbios del HSK 4 cumplen cinco funciones: medir (about the same差不多chà bu duō, almost差点chà diǎn, just now刚gāng, enough (sufficient)够gòu), juzgar y percibir (apparently看来kàn lái, original原来yuán lái, original本来běn lái, outcome结果jié guǒ, fear恐怕kǒng pà, unexpectedly竟然jìng rán), intensificar (used in 可汗可kě…(completed / change)了le, even甚至shèn zhì, again又yòu + not不bù/not / haven't没méi, ten million千万qiān wàn, then / just就jiù + sujeto), insistir en una pregunta (finally到底dào dǐ, to go to the bottom of a…究竟jiū jìng, don't tell me ...难道nán dào), y aconsejar u obligar (to have no other option but…只好zhǐ hǎo, have no choice or option…不得不bù dé bù, best最好zuì hǎo, or / still还是hái shì…(suggestion)吧ba). Dos patrones más manejan la secuencia y el alcance: early先xiān…again / then再zài… y one / a一yī + clasificador + one / a一yī + clasificador, además de always从来cóng láiall / both都dōu, also也yěall / both都dōu y just (in time)正好zhèng hǎo.

El examen evalúa la posición y la combinación, no el vocabulario: si all / both都dōu aparece, dónde va not不bù, qué adverbio corresponde a qué sentimiento. Repita cada ejemplo en voz alta.

Medición: about the same差不多chà bu duō, almost差点chà diǎn, just now刚gāng, enough (sufficient)够gòu

about the same差不多chà bu duō se descifra por sí mismo: used in 参差差chà (diferencia) + not不bù (no) + many多duō (mucho) = "casi nada" — "más o menos lo mismo". Funciona solo como predicado, une dos elementos (A with / and跟gēn B about the same差不多chà bu duō), o precede a una cantidad (about the same差不多chà bu duō十点shí diǎn "alrededor de las diez").

Shanghai municipality…上海shàng hǎiand / with和héNew York纽约niǔ yuēabout the same差不多chà bu duō。 (Shànghǎi hé Niǔyuē chàbuduō.) — Shanghái y Nueva York son muy similares.

Para varios elementos, añada all / both都dōu: this这zhèa few几个jǐ gèall / both都dōuabout the same差不多chà bu duō (zhè jǐ ge dōu chàbuduō) — estos todos están más o menos igual.

almost差点chà diǎn significa "por poco" — algo casi ocurrió, generalmente algo malo, y no ocurrió.

war chariot (archaic)车chēalmost差点chà diǎnto knock against撞zhuàngto / arrive到dàoI / me我wǒ。

La particularidad famosa: almost差点chà diǎnnot / haven't没méito fall down摔倒shuāi dǎo (chàdiǎn méi shuāidǎo) todavía significa "casi caigo" — el not / haven't没méi adds feeling, not logic.

just now刚gāng marks an action a short time ago, glued to the verb. With a duration it needs no "ago" word: he / him他tājust now刚gāngto come来láiChina中国zhōng guó两个liǎng gèmoon月yuè。 (Tā gāng lái Zhōngguó liǎng ge yuè.) — He came to China just two months ago. Don't confuse it with the noun just now (variant of 刚才)刚才gāng cái, which marks a point in the recent past.

enough (sufficient)够gòu means "enough", and position flips the mood: before a verb or adjective it is "enough to"; after certain verbs it is "fed up". we / us我们wǒ mento buy买mǎi(modifier / structural particle)的devegetable菜cài够吃gòu chī(completed / change)了le。 (Wǒmen mǎi de cài gòu chī le.) — We bought enough food. I / me我wǒ受够了shòu gòu le! (Wǒ shòugòu le!) — I've had enough! And 吃够chī gòu(completed / change)了le means "sick of eating it", not "ate enough".

Try it. You nearly missed the bus this morning but caught it: I / me我wǒtoday今天jīn tiānalmost差点chà diǎnnot / haven't没méito keep up with赶上gǎn shàngpublic公共gōng gòngsteam汽qì war chariot (archaic)车chē。(Wǒ jīntiān chàdiǎn méi gǎnshàng gōnggòngqìchē.) — I only just caught the bus.

Judging and realising: apparently看来kàn lái, original原来yuán lái, original本来běn lái, outcome结果jié guǒ, fear恐怕kǒng pà, unexpectedly竟然jìng rán

apparently看来kàn lái is your read of a situation — "it seems" — a judgement in your head. In someone's view: in my opinion在我看来zài wǒ kàn lái (zài w kànlái). Do not confuse it with seemingly看起来kàn qǐ lái, which reports what your eyes see.

apparently看来kàn láihe / him他tānot不bùto come来lái(completed / change)了le。 (Kànlái tā bù lái le.) — It seems he's not coming.

original原来yuán lái wears two hats: "original, former" (original原来yuán lái(modifier / structural particle)的de + noun) and the lightbulb "so it turns out": original原来yuán láiyou你nǐto be / is是shìteacher老师lǎo shī(exclamation)啊a! (Yuánlái nǐ shì lǎoshī a!) — Oh, so you're a teacher!

original本来běn lái is "originally — but it changed". It sets up a U-turn: I / me我wǒoriginal本来běn láiwant / will / need要yàoto go去qù (modifier / structural particle)的de,but可是kě shì afterwards后来hòu láiillness病bìng(completed / change)了le。 — I'd meant to go, but then I enfermar. Si nada cambió y te refieres a "resulta que", quieres original原来yuán lái, no original本来běn lái. Con then / just就jiù, original本来běn láithen / just就jiù significa "por supuesto, siempre fue así".

outcome结果jié guǒ abre la segunda cláusula con un desenlace a menudo indeseado: she / her她tāto wear穿chuān(degree marker)得detoo太tàiyoung少shǎo,outcome结果jié guǒto catch cold感冒gǎn mào (completed / change)了le。

unexpectedly竟然jìng rán es impactante — "inesperadamente, por algo": so much这么zhè medifficult / hard难nán(modifier / structural particle)的detopic题tí,he / him他tāunexpectedly竟然jìng ránto make做zuòto / towards / correct对duì(completed / change)了le。

Presionando e intensificando: used in 可汗可kě…(completed / change)了le, even甚至shèn zhì, again又yòu + not不bù/not / haven't没méi, ten million千万qiān wàn, then / just就jiù + sujeto

used in 可汗可kě + adjetivo + (completed / change)了le envuelve un adjetivo en un "¡vaya, de verdad!": this这zhèonly只zhǐpup小狗xiǎo gǒuused in 可汗可kěnaughty淘气táo qì(completed / change)了le!

even甚至shèn zhì apunta al caso más extremo — "incluso" — a menudo con to link连lián…all / both都dōu: 他太忙tā tài máng(completed / change)了le,what甚shèn to arrive至zhìvariant of 吃吃chīlunch午饭wǔ fàn(modifier / structural particle)的de(concept of) time时间shí jiānall / both都dōunot have / haven't没有méi yǒu。

— No importa qué hagas, no olvides tu pasaporte. Pertenece a ruegos y advertencias, no a enunciados neutrales.

then / just就jiù + sujeto resalta la escasez — "solo": everyone大家dà jiāall / both都dōuto finish work下班xià bān(completed / change)了le,then / just就jiùboss老板lǎo bǎnstill / also还háinot / haven't没méi to walk走zǒu。 Una pequeña cantidad cerca significa "solo"; un tiempo cerca significa el otro then / just就jiù.

Tres de los patrones anteriores encajan naturalmente — ten million千万qiān wànwant / will / need要yàoto be careful小心xiǎo xīn, fear恐怕kǒng pàcan / will会huìto rain下雨xià yǔ, or / still还是hái shìband带dài(把: marks the object)把bǎdamask silk伞sǎn(suggestion)吧ba. Di las tres.

Preguntando con firmeza: finally到底dào dǐ, to go to the bottom of a…究竟jiū jìng, don't tell me ...难道nán dào

finally到底dào dǐ indaga la respuesta real. En una pregunta presiona — "en el mundo": you你nǐfinally到底dào dǐwant / think / miss想xiǎngvariant of 说说shuō what什么shén me? (Nǐ dàodǐ xiǎng shuō shénme?) — ¿Qué demonios intentas decir? En un enunciado significa "al fin, finalmente": weather天气tiān qìfinally到底dào dǐwarm暖和nuǎn huo(completed / change)了le。

to go to the bottom of a…究竟jiū jìng es finally到底dào dǐ con traje — el mismo "exactamente, en el mundo", en un registro más escrito y formal: we / us我们wǒ mento go to the bottom of a…究竟jiū jìng还要hái yàoto wait for等děng(of time) how long?多久duō jiǔ? (Wǒmen jiūjìng hái yào děng duōjiǔ?) — Exactamente cuánto tiempo más tenemos que esperar?

don't tell me ... 吗ma: don't tell me ...难道nán dàoyou你nǐreally真的zhēn deto be convinced (that sth…相信xiāng xìnhe / him他tā(yes/no ?)吗ma?

Necesidad y consejo: to have no other option but…只好zhǐ hǎo, have no choice or option…不得不bù dé bù, best最好zuì hǎo, or / still还是hái shì…(suggestion)吧ba

to have no other option but…只好zhǐ hǎo es la única opción restante, tomada con reticencia: dining hall餐厅cān tīngall / both都dōuto close a door关门guān mén(completed / change)了le,we / us我们wǒ mento have no other option but…只好zhǐ hǎoto go去qù吃快餐chī kuài cān。

have no choice or option…不得不bù dé bù apila una doble negación en un "tener que" más fuerte y renuente: elevator电梯diàn tī又坏了yòu huài le, we / us我们wǒ menhave no choice or option… No cuentes mal los negativos: have no choice or option…不得不bù dé bùto go去qù significa "tener que ir", no "no poder ir". to have to必须bì xū es el "deber" más tranquilo y neutral. to go", not "can't go". to have to必须bì xū is the calmer, neutral "must".

best最好zuì hǎo ofrece un consejo suave — "sería mejor": outside (also pr. for this…外面wài miàncold冷lěng,best最好zuì hǎomany多duōto wear穿chuānpoint点diǎn。 Negativo: best最好zuì hǎodon't别bié. Para una obligación, usa (degree marker)得de / to have to必须bì xū en su lugar.

or / still还是hái shì + verb + (suggestion)吧ba decide por la elección preferida tras sopesar opciones — "más vale, al fin y al cabo": or / still还是hái shìtomorrow明天míng tiānto go去qù(suggestion)吧ba。 (Háishì míngtiān qù ba.) — Mejor vamos mañana al fin y al cabo. El (suggestion)吧ba lo suaviza en una sugerencia. after all. The (suggestion)吧ba softens it into a suggestion.

Secuencia y alcance: early先xiān…again / then再zài…, one / a一yī + classifier (in Chinese…量词liàng cí + one / a一yī + classifier (in Chinese…量词liàng cí, always从来cóng láiall / both都dōu, also也yěall / both都dōu, just (in time)正好zhèng hǎo

early先xiān … ,again / then再zài … ordena acciones en secuencia — "primero … luego …". En este marco again / then再zài significa "(and) then", not "again": First wash your hands, then eat. (Xiān xǐshǒu, zài chīfàn.) — Wash your no "otra vez": early先xiānto wash one's hands洗手xǐ shǒu,again / then再zàito have a meal吃饭chī fàn。 (Xiān xǐshǒu, zài chīfàn.) — Lávate las

manos primero, luego come. Cadenas más largas se amplían con then / after然后rán hòu / to catch and hold on接着jiē zhe. paso a paso, día tras día.

always从来cóng lái + all / both都dōu(to be / is是shì) significa "siempre, desde siempre", y la afirmativa necesita su all / both都dōu: always从来cóng láiall / both都dōudegree / adjective linker很hěn esfuerzo ✓, no always从来cóng láidegree / adjective linker很hěn esfuerzo ✗. I / me我wǒnever从来不cóng lái bùto drink (alcohol)喝酒hē jiǔ。 (Wǒ cónglái bù hējiǔ.) — Nunca bebo alcohol.

also也yěall / both都dōu abarca todo un grupo también — "todos … también" — en un orden fijo, nunca all / both都dōualso也yě: see 大夫大dàpeople人们rén mento like喜欢xǐ huanthis这个zhè gedining hall餐厅cān tīng,child孩子hái zi(plural)们menalso也yěall / both都dōuto like喜欢xǐ huan。

just (in time)正好zhèng hǎo es un blanco perfecto — "justo lo necesario, por casualidad" — actuando tanto como adverbio y adjetivo: you你nǐto come来lái(completed / change)了le!I / me我wǒjust (in time)正好zhèng hǎowant / will / need要yàoto try to find找zhǎoyou你nǐ。 (Nǐ lái le! Wǒ zhènghǎo yào zhǎo nǐ.) — ¡Ya estás aquí! Iba a buscar justo a ti. 这件zhè jiànclothes衣服yī fú(modifier / structural particle)的delarge and small大小dà xiǎojust (in time)正好zhèng hǎo。 (Zhè jiàn yīfu de dàxiǎo zhènghǎo.) — Este conjunto tiene exactamente el tamaño adecuado.
