Eleven verb-phrase patterns in one lesson. Joining actions with bing and bingqie. Giving advice with shao and duo before the verb. Assigning responsibility with you, and pinning blame with hai de. The two nevers, conglai bu for habits and conglai mei guo for lifetime experience. Worth doing with zhide, until with verb dao time, the separable lihe words, and the creeping surprise of V zhe V zhe jiu. The traps throughout are order, pairing, and the object slot that is already taken.
Bing between two verb phrases links them as and, and also. Wo tongyi bing zhichi ni de jueding, I agree with and support your decision. It is picky: it joins verbs or clauses, never nouns, because nouns are he's job, and cha bing kaofei is wrong on its face. Bingqie is the escalation: plain, it means and, and with ye or hai it means moreover, on top of that. Wo tongzhi le suoyou ren, bingqie hai zhunbei le cailiao, I told everyone, and moreover prepared the materials. And the boundary: the bingqie escalation with ye or hai cannot shrink back to a bare bing.
Shao before a verb means do less of it, and duo means do more, and the whole trick is position: the amount-word leads. English says drink less water, amount after; Chinese says shao he shui, less drink water, amount first. The worked advice: qing shao fang dian yan, use a bit less salt please. The gentle scolding: yeye, ni yao duo chuqu zouzou, grandpa, you should go out for walks more. And the error to never make: he shao shui, which puts the amount behind the verb. The pair is the staple of advice, shao aoye, stop staying up late, and duo he shui, drink more water.
You plus a person plus a verb spotlights who is responsible. Zhe jian shi you wo fuze, this matter is handled by me, I'm responsible for it. It lives in formal and business contexts, and it assigns responsibility rather than suffering, so it is not the passive bei. Hai de pins the blame on something for a bad outcome. Xiawu he le liang bei kafei, hai de wo wanshang shui bu zhao, I had two coffees, which kept me from sleeping at night. The cause comes first, the complaint follows, and the boundary is strict: hai de is only for bad results, because hai means harm; for a neutral or good outcome, use rang or shi.
Conglai with a negative means never, and the choice of negative does the deciding. Conglai bu states a rule or habit: ta conglai bu hejiu, she never drinks, as a standing fact about her. Conglai mei with a verb and guo states lifetime experience: ta conglai mei jian guo ta mama, she has never met her mother, not once in her life. In speech both shorten, cong bu and cong mei. And the watch-out writes itself into exam items: the experiential guo is not optional, so conglai mei jian on its own is wrong, and conglai mei jian guo is right.
Zhide plus a verb says an action is worth doing: zhège xiangfa zhide kaolü, this idea is worth considering, and zhide yikan, worth a read. Keep it apart from money, because zhide is about whether doing something pays off, while plain zhi carries the price, zhège zhi yibai kuai. Dao after a verb plus a time works like until, often with yizhi to stress the unbroken stretch: women zai jiuba yizhi liao dao banye, we chatted at the bar until midnight. And the structural catch that trips everyone: when the verb has an object, you repeat the verb, ta xie zuoye xie dao shier dian ban, she did homework until twelve thirty, one xie for the object, one xie for the dao half.
A surprising number of verbs are secretly verb plus object pairs: jian mian, see a face, to meet; shui jiao, sleep a sleep; bang mang, do a favour; jie hun, tie a marriage. Other words slot between the halves: wo men jian guo mian, we have met, with the guo inside; ta bang le wo yige mang, he did me a favour, with the beneficiary and the count inside. And the rule that makes this the classic error of the level: you cannot bolt a new object onto the end, because the object slot is already taken by the second half. Wo xiang jian mian ni is wrong; wo xiang gen ni jian mian is right, with the other person introduced by gen in front.
Double up verb plus zhe to keep an action rolling, and jiu plus le springs the event that sneaked up during it. Zou zhe zou zhe, jiu dao jia le, walking along, before we knew it we were home. Ta shuo zhe shuo zhe, jiu ku le, as she talked, she suddenly started crying. Both zhe verbs are the same ongoing action, and jiu introduces the new thing that emerged from it, which is why the pattern carries that before-you-knew-it feeling the English translation keeps reaching for. Say both examples aloud, and let the rhythm of the doubled verb do the work.
Pause and check both. First, shao he shui, with the amount-word leading the verb, never he shao shui. Second, the sentence needs the verb repeated: xie zuoye xie dao shier dian, one xie for the object, one for the dao half, because the repeated verb is what carries the until. The remaining review items: he joins nouns while bing joins verbs; conglai bu is the habit never and conglai mei guo the experience never; wo xiang gen ni jian mian is the corrected separable; and hai de stays with bad outcomes, never with the gift that made you happy.
