The two famous constructions, demystified. Ba is take it and do something to it, and the hand radical in ba is the whole idea, a hand reaching out to grab the object. Bei is got done to, the focus flipping to the receiver. Both constructions grab their object and forbid the bare verb, and both carry rules about where the negation goes.
Ba literally means take or grab, carrying the hand radical, so a ba sentence is just take this specific thing and do something to it. Qing ba men guanshang, please close the door. Ta ba wo de shouji fang zai bao li le, she put my phone in her bag. The trap for English speakers is the object jumping in front of the verb, and the verb never standing bare: ba shu fang zai zhuozi shang is right, ba shu fang lands on a Chinese ear like put the book, and then trailing off. The object must be specific and known, the negation goes before ba, bie ba ta reng le, and feeling verbs like xihuan and xiang cannot take ba, because there is no result to a feeling.
Bei flips the focus to the receiver: receiver, plus bei, plus the doer, plus verb, plus le or a result. Wo de shouji bei tou le, my phone got stolen. Ta bei jingcha zhua le, he was caught by the police. The doer is optional, wo bei pian le, I was tricked, doer unknown or unimportant, the verb cannot be bare, and these sentences lean toward unfortunate events, things done to you. The pairing: ba leads with the doer, bei leads with the victim, xiaotou ba shouji tou le versus shouji bei xiaotou tou le, one event, two spotlights.
Youde picks out part of a group you already have, and it shines in pairs: youde ren zai hejiu, youde ren zai tiaowu, some are drinking, some are dancing. Zhexie pingguo youde tian, youde suan, some of these apples are sweet, some sour. It can sit before the noun or right after the subject, and the noun often drops once context is clear. For some as a vague amount you want or buy, switch to yixie, mai yixie shuiguo.
Two rising frames, one split. Yue dot dot dot yue links two things that rise together, two dials geared to the same shaft: yue kan yue xihuan, the more I look, the more I like it, and the clauses can even have different subjects, ni yue shuo, ta yue bu ting, the more you talk the less he listens. Yuelaiyue tracks one thing across time, more and more: tianqi yuelaiyue leng le, the weather is getting colder and colder, the le marking the change in motion. Time takes yuelaiyue; pairing takes yue yue.
Echo a question word on both sides of jiu and you get do whatever you like. Xiang chi shenme jiu chi shenme, eat whatever you want. Xiang qu nar jiu qu nar, go wherever you like. The same question word appears twice, once setting the choice and once cashing it in, shei dot dot dot jiu dot dot dot shei, and the word must match on both sides, because mixing shenme with nar breaks it. It is the language of total freedom, whatever you pick, that is what you get.
The watch-out is placement: negation goes before ba and before bei, mei ba zuoye zuo wan, didn't finish the homework, mei bei faxian, wasn't discovered, never inside the frame. And the shared verb rule: a bare verb is illegal in both constructions, because both of them exist to report what happened to the object.
Pause and check both. First, bei leads with the victim, the phone got stolen. Second, the negation goes before ba, mei ba zuoye zuo wan. The remaining review items: the ba verb needs its result, ba shu fang zai zhuozi shang, and yuelaiyue tracks one thing over time while yue yue links two. Grab it and report it, or lead with the victim, and the two famous constructions are just two spotlights.
