What this topic teaches

Los adverbios de tiempo y frecuencia: again又yòu para una repetición que ya ocurrió, all along一直yì zhí y always总是zǒng shì para dos tipos distintos de "siempre", finally终于zhōng yú para "finalmente", only只zhǐ para "solo", la tardanza only then / not until才cái, las tres palabras "después/luego", y las palabras temporales before以前yǐ qián y just now (variant of 刚才)刚才gāng cái.

¡Vuelve a llover! (Yòu xiàyǔ le!) — ¡Está lloviendo otra vez!

again又yòu + verbo + (completed / change)了le mira hacia atrás en una repetición completada, a menudo con un toque de fastidio. again又yòu retrocede; again / then再zài avanza (again / then再zàito come来láifirst一次yī cì — hazlo una vez más).

all along一直yì zhí vs always总是zǒng shì: dos "siempre"

all along一直yì zhí significa "una línea recta a través del tiempo" — duración ininterrumpida: siempre me has gustado (wǒ yìzhí hěn xǐhuan nǐ) — Me has gustado desde el principio.

finally终于zhōng yú y only只zhǐ

— He/She finally finished the homework! It glows with relief, must take (completed / change)了le, and implies a welcome outcome (a neutral "in the end" is final最后zuì hòu).

only只zhǐ se adhiere al verbo: I / me我wǒ只会zhǐ huìto have / there is有yǒu一个yí gèolder brother哥哥gē gē → I / me我wǒonly have ...只有zhǐ yǒu一个yí gèolder brother哥哥gē gē (wǒ zhǐ yǒu yíge gēge) — Solo tengo un hermano mayor. El inglés "only" vaga; el chino only只zhǐ se queda pegado al verbo.

only then / not until才cái: tarde y apenas

I / me我wǒyesterday昨天zuó tiān十一点shí yì diǎnonly then / not until才cáito / arrive到dàohome家jiā。 (Wǒ zuótiān shíyī diǎn cái dào jiā.) — No llegué a casa hasta las once.

Antes de una hora, only then / not until才cái retrasa las cosas ("no hasta"). Antes de un número, reduce la cantidad ("solo"): he / him他tāonly then / not until才cái二十岁èr shí suì — tiene solo veinte años. Ambos comparten "menos de lo esperado", y la retraso que toma only then / not until才cái no usa (completed / change)了le.

before以前yǐ qián y just now (variant of 刚才)刚才gāng cái

to have a meal吃饭chī fànbefore以前yǐ qián (chīfàn yǐqián) — antes de comer. Al inicio de una oración, before以前yǐ qián significa "en el pasado, solía": before以前yǐ qiánhe / him他tāto be / is是shìcook厨师chú shī — solía ser chef. just now (variant of 刚才)刚才gāng cái (gāngcái) es un sustantivo de tiempo — "justo ahora": you你nǐjust now (variant of 刚才)刚才gāng cáivariant of 说说shuōwhat什么shén me(completed / change)了le? just now刚gāng (el adverbio)

se adhiere al verbo; just now (variant of 刚才)刚才gāng cái (el sustantivo) puede funcionar solo. adhiérase al verbo; just now (variant of 刚才)刚才gāng cái (el sustantivo) puede funcionar solo.

Las tres palabras "después/entonces"

after以后yǐ hòu después de un evento = "después de X" (to finish class下课xià kèafter以后yǐ hòu — después de clase); al inicio = "desde ahora "no" (I won't drink anymore). Then = "and then", suitable for future sequences. Later = a past "and then" — both events already happened: I initially didn't approve, later they agreed — at first my parents disapproved; later they came round.

Precaución

  • Later never introduces a plan or future sequence — that is the role of then.
  • Before stamps after the event: before eating, not before eating.

Repaso

  1. Which looks back, again or once more?
  2. "He's always late (each time)" — always; continuously?
  3. What must finally never lose?
  4. He's only twenty years old — which function of only is this?
  5. Which "and then" can introduce a future plan?
  6. Order: how does Chinese say "before eating"?

(Answers: 1. Again — the past repeat. 2. Always; Continuously indicates unbroken duration. 3. Its le. 4. The number function — "only twenty". 5. Then. 6. Before eating — event first, then before.)
