Advanced all / both都dōu (already / even)

The group is still working at midnight

  • A teammate looks at the clock: all / both都dōu十二点shí èr diǎn(completed / change)了le,tomorrow明天míng tiānagain / then再zàito make做zuò(suggestion)吧ba! – “It is already twelve; let us continue tomorrow!” all / both都dōu presents the time as later than the speaker expected or wanted.
  • Compare we / us我们wǒ menall / both都dōuto come来lái(completed / change)了le – “We have all arrived.” The same character can express a reached point, “even,” or “all”; read what it applies to.

Emphasise a point already reached

  • all / both都dōu + time or reached state + (completed / change)了le often adds surprise, urgency or another evaluation: all / both都dōu十二点shí èr diǎn(completed / change)了le / cooked rice饭fànall / both都dōuto let sth cool down凉liáng(completed / change)了le。
  • already已经yǐ jīng十二点shí èr diǎn(completed / change)了le also reports that it is already twelve. all / both都dōu often adds emphasis, but the exact attitude depends on the context and voice.

already都dōutwelve十二点shí èr diǎn了le!

Three uses of 都 have different meanings: all people, a point already reached, and even a low-threshold task

Put an unexpected item in focus

  • he / him他tāurgent急jí(degree marker)得decooked rice饭fànall / both都dōunot feel like eating吃不下chī bù xià。 – “He is so anxious that he cannot even eat.” Eating is presented as something you would normally expect him to manage.
  • so much这么zhè mesimple简单jiǎn dān(modifier / structural particle)的detopic题tíall / both都dōuimprobable不会bú huìto make做zuò。 – “Cannot even solve such an easy question.” This use is not a clock-time statement and does not mean all questions.

he他tāso anxious that急得jí defood饭fàneven都dōucannot eat吃不下chī bu xià。

Check the item before all / both都dōu

  • we / us我们wǒ menall / both都dōuto come来lái(completed / change)了le refers to every member of the relevant “we” group. 连小李lián xiǎo lǐall / both都dōuto come来lái(completed / change)了le singles out Xiao Li as an unexpected participant: “Even Xiao Li came.”
  • all / both都dōu does not always begin the sentence. cooked rice饭fànall / both都dōuto let sth cool down凉liáng(completed / change)了le and we / us我们wǒ menall / both都dōuto come来lái(completed / change)了le put the topic or subject before it; do not copy one time expression into every sentence pattern.

Contrast a reached point with an ongoing state

  • all / both都dōu十二点shí èr diǎn(completed / change)了le can remind a friend that it is already late. he / him他tāstill / also还háiat / in在zàito work工作gōng zuò(and …? / softener)呢ne says he is still working; the state continues.
  • Both can appear in one exchange: all / both都dōu十二点shí èr diǎn(completed / change)了le,he / him他tāstill / also还háiat / in在zàito work工作gōng zuò(and …? / softener)呢ne。 – “It is already twelve, and he is still working.” The words contribute different information.

Choose the meaning from the whole sentence

  • Identify the relevant group, reached point or unexpected item. Then translate the relation instead of replacing every all / both都dōu with “all.”
  • To express a complaint or surprise accurately, keep the context. The character alone does not prove that the speaker is angry.

we / us我们wǒ menall / both都dōuto come来lái(completed / change)了le: all of us. all / both都dōu十二点shí èr diǎn(completed / change)了le: already twelve, with emphasis. so much这么zhè mesimple简单jiǎn dān(modifier / structural particle)的detopic题tíall / both都dōuimprobable不会bú huìto make做zuò: cannot even solve this easy question. Read the scope and context.

Practise this pattern step by step.

Advanced still / also还hái … (and …? / softener)呢ne

Someone is sleeping next door

  • A friend speaks loudly. You say 小声点xiǎo shēng diǎn,he / him他tāstill / also还háiat / in在zàito go to bed睡觉shuì jiào(and …? / softener)呢ne。 – “Keep your voice down; he is still sleeping.” The continuing state is a reason for the reminder.
  • still / also还hái…(and …? / softener)呢ne can draw attention to a state, but another spoken pattern can evaluate a claimed role ironically. These are related-looking forms with different uses.

Remind the listener that a state continues

  • Use subject + still / also还hái + predicate + (and …? / softener)呢ne: he / him他tāstill / also还háiat / in在zàito go to bed睡觉shuì jiào(and …? / softener)呢ne / (concept of) time时间shí jiānstill / also还háiearly早zǎo(and …? / softener)呢ne。 (and …? / softener)呢ne draws attention to the point in this exchange; it is not a past-tense marker.
  • (concept of) time时间shí jiānstill / also还háiearly早zǎo(and …? / softener)呢ne can reassure someone who is rushing: “It is still early.” The state meaning comes from the sentence, while context and voice shape the tone.

time时间shíjiānstill还háiearly早zǎo呢ne。

A continuing state and an ironic role evaluation require different interpretations

Recognise an ironic evaluation

  • In a critical exchange, still / also还háiexpert专家zhuān jiā(and …? / softener)呢ne,to link连liánthis这个zhè geall / both都dōunot不bùto understand懂dǒng。 means roughly “An expert, supposedly – yet you do not even understand this.” It challenges the performance expected of that role.
  • Do not read this as “still an expert” in the same way as “still sleeping.” It can be sharp criticism, not automatically friendly teasing.

Compare the two complete exchanges

  • 小声点xiǎo shēng diǎn,he / him他tāstill / also还háiat / in在zàito go to bed睡觉shuì jiào(and …? / softener)呢ne draws attention to an ongoing activity. still / also还háiexpert专家zhuān jiā(and …? / softener)呢ne,to link连liánthis这个zhè geall / both都dōunot不bùto understand懂dǒng contrasts a claimed role with disappointing performance.
  • still / also还háivariant of 说说shuō(and …? / softener)呢ne is also a context-dependent spoken response, often like “Do not even mention it.” Do not build a universal translation from that short phrase alone.

Keep word order and context separate

  • For the ongoing-state pattern, place still / also还hái before the predicate and (and …? / softener)呢ne at the end: he / him他tāstill / also还háiat / in在zàito go to bed睡觉shuì jiào(and …? / softener)呢ne。 Keep the activity or state that the listener needs to notice.
  • A different ending can make a different sentence rather than a broken one. he / him他tāstill / also还háiat / in在zàito go to bed睡觉shuì jiào(yes/no ?)吗ma? is a question about whether he is still sleeping; it is not the same reminder.

Interpret before imitating the tone

  • Identify whether the speaker points to a continuing state or evaluates a claim. Use the words around the pattern to justify your choice.
  • When giving a considerate reminder, state the situation clearly. Do not use an ironic role comment when your goal is simply to explain why someone should be quiet.

Still sleeping: ongoing state. “An expert, supposedly”: ironic evaluation in the stated context. (and …? / softener)呢ne is not a tense marker, and the pattern does not guarantee a friendly tone.

Practise this pattern step by step.

general总zǒng (always / keep on)

The same teammate keeps arriving late

  • After several late arrivals, you say he / him他tāgeneral总zǒngto arrive late迟到chí dào。 – “He is always late.” You describe a repeated pattern, possibly with frustration.
  • Compare he / him他tāyesterday昨天zuó tiānto arrive late迟到chí dào(completed / change)了lefirst一次yī cì – “He was late once yesterday.” One reported event is different from a habit.

Describe a recurring pattern

  • In this use, subject + general总zǒng + predicate often works like always总是zǒng shì: he / him他tāgeneral总zǒngto arrive late迟到chí dào / he / him他tāalways总是zǒng shìto arrive late迟到chí dào。
  • Give a suitable time or situation boundary: weekend周末zhōu mòhe / him他tāgeneral总zǒngto sleep睡shuìto / arrive到dàonoon中午zhōng wǔ。 – “At weekends he keeps sleeping until noon.” It is not a claim about every day of his life.

he他tāalways总zǒngbe late迟到chídào。

A repeated pattern contrasts with one event and an eventual-outcome expectation

Notice the speaker’s evaluation

  • you你nǐhow / why怎么zěn me总玩zǒng wáncell phone手机shǒu jī? can sound like a complaint: “Why are you always on your phone?” general总zǒng helps present the behaviour as recurring.
  • Recurrence is not always negative: she / her她tāgeneral总zǒngassistance帮助bāng zhùother people别人bié rén。 – “She is always helping others.” Do not assign a complaining tone to every sentence containing general总zǒng.

Recognise an eventual expectation

  • 总会zǒng huìgood好hǎo(modifier / structural particle)的de。 expresses reassurance that things will become better eventually. It is not a report that things have repeatedly improved in the past.
  • Do not replace every general总zǒng with always总是zǒng shì mechanically. always总是zǒng shìcan / will会huìgood好hǎo(modifier / structural particle)的de tends toward a recurring generalization; 总会zǒng huìgood好hǎo(modifier / structural particle)的de in this reassuring exchange focuses on an eventual outcome.

Match the evidence to the statement

  • A diary entry saying “late once yesterday” supports one event. Several records over a term may support a recurring pattern within that term.
  • Everyday “always” can be an exaggeration. If exact counts matter, report them rather than treating general总zǒng as a mathematical claim about every possible occasion.

Choose the intended time meaning

  • For a recurring habit: he / him他tāgeneral总zǒngto arrive late迟到chí dào。 For one event: he / him他tāyesterday昨天zuó tiānto arrive late迟到chí dào(completed / change)了lefirst一次yī cì。 For reassurance about the future: 总会zǒng huìgood好hǎo(modifier / structural particle)的de。
  • Read the situation and predicate before translating. A habit, a single event and an eventual expectation are different meanings to practise.

general总zǒng can describe recurrence, as in general总zǒngto arrive late迟到chí dào, or an eventual expectation, as in 总会zǒng huìgood好hǎo(modifier / structural particle)的de. general总zǒng and always总是zǒng shì overlap in the habit use; they are not interchangeable in every sentence.

Practise this pattern step by step.

after all毕竟bì jìng (after all)

A new teammate makes a mistake

  • A teammate is still learning. You say he / him他tāafter all毕竟bì jìngto be / is是shìnew hand新手xīn shǒu,to / for / give给gěihe / him他tāa bit一点yì diǎn(concept of) time时间shí jiān。 – “He is a beginner, after all; give him some time.”
  • after all毕竟bì jìng reminds the listener of a reason that matters to your judgment. The speaker treats it as relevant; the word does not prove the reason is true.

Put the reason inside a clause

  • Use subject + after all毕竟bì jìng + predicate, or put after all毕竟bì jìng at the beginning of the clause: he / him他tāafter all毕竟bì jìngto be / is是shìnew hand新手xīn shǒu / after all毕竟bì jìnghe / him他tāto be / is是shìnew hand新手xīn shǒu。
  • Keep after all毕竟bì jìng together. In the neutral written pattern practised here, put it before the predicate rather than attaching it after a complete sentence.

he他tāafter all毕竟bìjìngis是shìbeginner新手xīnshǒu。

Connect the reason to the judgment

  • 别太bié tàistrict严格yán gé,he / him他tāafter all毕竟bì jìngor / still还是hái shì(measure word)个gèchild孩子hái zi。 – “Do not be too strict; he is still a child, after all.” The second clause supports the first.
  • after all毕竟bì jìng does not always excuse a mistake. this这zhèafter all毕竟bì jìngto be / is是shìhe / him他tā(modifier / structural particle)的deto decide (to do something)决定jué dìng,we / us我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāito esteem尊重zūn zhòng。 – “It is his decision, after all; we should respect it.” Here the reason supports respect.
毕竟 presents a reason; 反正 sets aside alternatives when reaching a point

Contrast after all毕竟bì jìng with anyway反正fǎn zhèng

  • he / him他tāafter all毕竟bì jìngto be / is是shìnew hand新手xīn shǒu,to / for / give给gěihe / him他tāa bit一点yì diǎn(concept of) time时间shí jiān。 focuses on why giving time is reasonable. anyway反正fǎn zhèngtoday今天jīn tiānnot不bùto hand over交jiāo,tomorrow明天míng tiānagain / then再zàiinspection检查jiǎn chá。 focuses on a point the speaker uses regardless of other discussion.
  • Some contexts allow both words, with a different emphasis. Choose from the intended relationship between the clauses; do not translate every English “anyway” as after all毕竟bì jìng.

Check a reason without treating it as proof

  • A speaker can be mistaken or exaggerate. he / him他tāafter all毕竟bì jìngto have / there is有yǒuexperience经验jīng yàn does not independently prove that the person has experience or will succeed.
  • Read the surrounding exchange. Ask which judgment the reason supports and whether the speaker is reminding, explaining or defending it.

Recall the meaning, then transfer it

  • To explain patience with a beginner, connect the judgment to the relevant reason: to / for / give给gěihe / him他tāa bit一点yì diǎn(concept of) time时间shí jiān,he / him他tāafter all毕竟bì jìngto be / is是shìnew hand新手xīn shǒu。
  • To show the discussion will not change a point, consider anyway反正fǎn zhèng instead. Use the whole context to decide; word order alone does not settle meaning.

after all毕竟bì jìng highlights a reason relevant to the speaker’s judgment. It is a reminder or explanation, not a guarantee of truth and not an automatic synonym for anyway反正fǎn zhèng.

Practise this pattern step by step.

almost差点chà diǎnnot / haven't没méi: near misses and context

The bus doors close just after you board

  • You rush onto the bus and say I / me我wǒalmost差点chà diǎnnot / haven't没méito keep up with赶上gǎn shàngwar chariot (archaic)车chē,fortunately幸好xìng hǎochauffeur司机sī jīto wait for等děng(completed / change)了leI / me我wǒ。 – “I almost missed the bus; luckily the driver waited for me.” The context establishes that you caught it.
  • almost差点chà diǎnnot / haven't没méi can be difficult to interpret without context. Do not decide every outcome by counting negative words or applying one wanted/unwanted shortcut.

Read a nearly failed success

  • In this complete bus example, almost差点chà diǎnnot / haven't没méi + to keep up with赶上gǎn shàng describes nearly failing to catch the bus. fortunately幸好xìng hǎochauffeur司机sī jīto wait for等děng(completed / change)了leI / me我wǒ makes the successful outcome clear.
  • Compare I / me我wǒalmost差点chà diǎnto keep up with赶上gǎn shàngwar chariot (archaic)车chē,but可是kě shìwar chariot (archaic)车chēto go (of car, train etc)开走kāi zǒu(completed / change)了le。 – “I almost caught the bus, but it left.” Here the next clause establishes failure to catch it.

I我wǒalmost failed to差点没chàdiǎn méicatch赶上gǎnshàngbus车chē。

The following clause makes the actual bus outcome clear

Recognise a near accident

  • I / me我wǒalmost差点chà diǎnto fall down摔倒shuāi dǎo,fortunately幸好xìng hǎo扶住fú zhù(completed / change)了lerailing栏杆lán gān。 means “I almost fell; luckily I held the rail.” In this account, the fall did not happen.
  • Speakers can also say I / me我wǒalmost差点chà diǎnnot / haven't没méito fall down摔倒shuāi dǎo in such a near-accident context. The not / haven't没méi does not always work like an ordinary logical negation; uses and readings can vary.

Let the surrounding outcome settle the reading

  • Ask what almost happened and what actually happened. Phrases such as fortunately幸好xìng hǎoto keep up with赶上gǎn shàng(completed / change)了le or outcome结果jié guǒor / still还是hái shìnot / haven't没méito keep up with赶上gǎn shàng give direct outcome evidence.
  • A bare almost差点chà diǎnnot / haven't没méi sentence may be ambiguous or interpreted differently by speakers. Do not mark every unfamiliar context “grammatically broken” just because it conflicts with a simple shortcut.

Make your own account clear

  • If the outcome matters, add an explicit clause: I / me我wǒalmost差点chà diǎnnot / haven't没méito keep up with赶上gǎn shàng,fortunately幸好xìng hǎofinal最后zuì hòuto keep up with赶上gǎn shàng(completed / change)了le。 – “I nearly failed to catch it; luckily I caught it in the end.”
  • For a clear failure account, state failure directly: I / me我wǒnot / haven't没méito keep up with赶上gǎn shàngwar chariot (archaic)车chē,to have no other option but…只好zhǐ hǎoto wait for等děngdown下xià一班yī bān。 – “I missed the bus and had to wait for the next one.” Avoid making a listener infer an important outcome from an isolated near-miss phrase.

Separate the close call from the result

  • In the worked account, nearly missing is the close call and boarding is the actual result. In the rail account, nearly falling is the close call and staying upright is the result.
  • Use the whole account to answer an outcome question. If the outcome is not clear, ask what happened rather than inventing certainty from not / haven't没méi alone.

almost差点chà diǎnnot / haven't没méi is context-sensitive. Read the near event and the actual outcome separately. Wanted/unwanted tendencies can help, but they do not replace an explicit result in an ambiguous account.

Practise this pattern step by step.

anyway反正fǎn zhèng (anyway / in any case)

Two ways to travel, one fixed appointment

  • Your friend debates taking a bus or a taxi. You say to sit坐zuòwhat什么shén mewar chariot (archaic)车chēyou你nǐto decide (to do something)决定jué dìng(suggestion)吧ba,anyway反正fǎn zhèngI / me我wǒ八点bā diǎnto / arrive到dào。 – “You decide how to travel; in any case, I will arrive at eight.”
  • anyway反正fǎn zhèng presents a point the speaker treats as holding regardless of the alternatives under discussion. The tone can be practical, reassuring or dismissive.

Put anyway反正fǎn zhèng before the point

  • In the neutral written patterns here, use anyway反正fǎn zhèng + clause or subject + anyway反正fǎn zhèng + predicate: anyway反正fǎn zhèngI / me我wǒnot不bùto go去qù / I / me我wǒanyway反正fǎn zhèng不去bù qù。
  • Keep the two characters together. Colloquial afterthoughts can occur in speech; do not turn the classroom pattern into a claim that every other placement is impossible.

in any case反正fǎnzhèngI我wǒeight o'clock八点bā diǎnarrive到dào。

Identify which alternatives are set aside

  • not to be concerned不管bù guǎnyou你nǐ信不信xìn bù xìn,anyway反正fǎn zhèng我信wǒ xìn。 – “Whether you believe it or not, I believe it.” The speaker’s belief is presented as independent of yours.
  • anyway反正fǎn zhèng(concept of) time时间shí jiānstill / also还háiearly早zǎo,we / us我们wǒ menslowly慢慢màn mànto walk走zǒu。 – “There is still time anyway; let us walk slowly.” The point can be a practical circumstance, not only a stubborn refusal.
反正 keeps one point fixed while other choices remain open

Contrast a reason with a fixed point

  • he / him他tāafter all毕竟bì jìngto be / is是shìnew hand新手xīn shǒu,to / for / give给gěihe / him他tāa bit一点yì diǎn(concept of) time时间shí jiān。 uses after all毕竟bì jìng to support patience with a reason. not to be concerned不管bù guǎnother people别人bié rén去不去qù bù qù,anyway反正fǎn zhèngI / me我wǒto go去qù。 uses anyway反正fǎn zhèng to set aside other people’s choices.
  • Both words can introduce useful information. The distinction is the speaker’s intended connection, not a rule that one word always states a fact and the other never gives a reason.

Listen for the social effect

  • anyway反正fǎn zhèngI / me我wǒnot不bùto go去qù can sound firm or dismissive in an argument. A calm explanation may be more considerate when your decision affects someone else.
  • The word does not make an uncertain future certain. You can set aside a debate and still express uncertainty: anyway反正fǎn zhèngnow现在xiàn zàistill / also还háinot不bùto know知道zhī dào,to wait for等děngto notify通知tōng zhī(suggestion)吧ba。 – “We do not know yet anyway; wait for the notice.”

Recall the point and its boundary

  • In the travel example, the transport choice is open while the speaker commits to arriving at eight. Identify those two parts before translating.
  • In a new exchange, ask what the speaker sets aside and what remains relevant. Read tone and context instead of treating “mind made up” as the only possible meaning.

anyway反正fǎn zhèng presents a point regardless of the alternatives being discussed. It can introduce a decision, circumstance or admitted uncertainty; context controls the emphasis and tone.

Practise this pattern step by step.

as much as possible尽量jǐn liàng + Verb (as much as possible)

You hope to arrive early, but the bus may be late

  • A friend asks for an early arrival. You say 我会wǒ huìas much as possible尽量jǐn liàngbreakfast早点zǎo diǎnto come来lái。 – “I will try to come as early as possible.” You express an effort within practical limits.
  • Compare I / me我wǒdefinitely一定yí dìng八点bā diǎnto / arrive到dào – “I will definitely arrive at eight.” as much as possible尽量jǐn liàng by itself does not guarantee the exact outcome.

Put the effort modifier before the action

  • Use subject + as much as possible尽量jǐn liàng + action or limit: you你nǐas much as possible尽量jǐn liàngbreakfast早点zǎo diǎnto come来lái / 我会wǒ huìas much as possible尽量jǐn liàngto help帮bāngyou你nǐ。 The speaker tries to do what is feasible.
  • as much as possible尽量jǐn liàng can also limit an unwanted action: as much as possible尽量jǐn liàngdon't别biéat / in在zàievening晚上wǎn shàng喝咖啡hē kā fēi。 – “Try not to drink coffee at night.” It does not always mean doing more of an activity.

you你nǐas much as possible尽量jǐnliàngearly早zǎoa bit点diǎncome来lái。

Distinguish effort from a guarantee

  • 我会wǒ huìas much as possible尽量jǐn liàngbreakfast早点zǎo diǎnto come来lái reports an intention to try. If the bus is late, the outcome may still be late even when the speaker made a real effort.
  • If a precise time is essential, state the deadline and discuss whether it is realistic. A hopeful modifier is not a substitute for the actual scheduling information.
An effort commitment differs from a guaranteed arrival claim

Contrast as much as possible尽量jǐn liàng with permission-giving despite尽管jǐn guǎn

  • as much as possible尽量jǐn liàngbreakfast早点zǎo diǎnto come来lái asks for an effort toward an earlier arrival. to have / there is有yǒuquestion问题wèn tídespite尽管jǐn guǎnto ask问wèn gives permission or encouragement to ask freely.
  • The similar first character does not make the expressions synonyms. Decide whether the speaker asks for feasible effort or removes hesitation about an action.

Read what is being increased or reduced

  • 上课时shàng kè shías much as possible尽量jǐn liàngto use / with用yòngChinese language汉语hàn yǔto exchange交流jiāo liú asks learners to use Chinese as much as feasible. 尽量少jǐn liàng shǎoto use / with用yòngcell phone手机shǒu jī asks them to reduce phone use as far as feasible.
  • Identify the whole modified phrase, including early早zǎo、young少shǎo or don't别bié. Translating only as much as possible尽量jǐn liàng as “more” can reverse the intended advice.

Make a realistic effort statement

  • To offer help without guaranteeing success, say 我会wǒ huìas much as possible尽量jǐn liàngto help帮bāngyou你nǐ。 Give the listener any important limits separately.
  • In a new example, identify the attempted action and whether its outcome is certain. as much as possible尽量jǐn liàng expresses feasible effort, not proof that the action succeeded.

as much as possible尽量jǐn liàng asks for or offers an effort within limits. It can increase a useful action or reduce an unwanted one; read the whole phrase and distinguish effort from certainty.

Practise this pattern step by step.

each other互相hù xiāng + Verb (each other)

Two partners check each other’s drafts

  • Mei checks Arun’s draft and Arun checks Mei’s. You can say they他们tā men互相帮助hù xiāng bāng zhù。 – “They help each other.” The relationship goes in both directions.
  • If only Mei helps Arun, say old variant of 梅梅méiassistance帮助bāng zhùAalen, town in Germany阿伦ā lún。 That one-way account does not establish mutual help.

Place each other互相hù xiāng before the reciprocal action

  • Use participants + each other互相hù xiāng + verb phrase: we / us我们wǒ men互相帮助hù xiāng bāng zhù / they他们tā meneach other互相hù xiāngto see看kàn(completed / change)了lea glance一眼yī yǎn。 State or recover the people involved from context.
  • I / me我wǒwith / and跟gēnhe / him他tā互相帮助hù xiāng bāng zhù includes both participants. The word I / me我wǒ does not make the sentence wrong when with / and跟gēnhe / him他tā supplies the other participant.

we我们wǒmenshould应该yīnggāieach other互相hùxiānghelp帮助bāngzhù。

Reciprocity does not mean equal amounts

  • In a group, 互相学习hù xiāng xué xí can mean people learn from one another. It need not describe exactly two people or every possible pair doing the same amount.
  • Mei may help with diagrams while Arun helps with language. The actions support one another even though the contributions differ.
Mutual help goes in both directions; one-way help does not

Distinguish each other互相hù xiāng from all / both都dōu

  • we / us我们wǒ menall / both都dōuassistance帮助bāng zhùteacher老师lǎo shī says every person in the relevant group helps the teacher. It does not say they help one another.
  • we / us我们wǒ men互相帮助hù xiāng bāng zhù makes the participants both helpers and recipients within the relationship. Read who acts on whom.

Check the action and the participants

  • A completed mutual glance is possible: they他们tā meneach other互相hù xiāngto see看kàn(completed / change)了lea glance一眼yī yǎn。 Reciprocity does not require a repeated habit or a long duration.
  • Do not add each other互相hù xiāng to an unrelated one-person activity without a reciprocal partner. Describe the actual relationship rather than using it as a general word for cooperation.

Trace the relationship before translating

  • For two partners, draw A → B and B → A to test mutual help. A → teacher and B → teacher instead represents both helping the same third person.
  • For a larger group, use the stated interaction evidence. each other互相hù xiāng signals reciprocity, not a guaranteed equal contribution from every person.

each other互相hù xiāng describes a reciprocal relationship. Participants can be expressed in several ways, including I / me我wǒwith / and跟gēnhe / him他tā; mutual actions need not be equal, repeated or limited to two people.

Practise this pattern step by step.

despite尽管jǐn guǎn + Verb (feel free to)

A learner hesitates to ask a question

  • A teacher says to have / there is有yǒuquestion问题wèn tídespite尽管jǐn guǎnto ask问wèn。 – “If you have questions, feel free to ask.” despite尽管jǐn guǎn encourages the learner not to hold back in this context.
  • Compare despite尽管jǐn guǎnto rain下雨xià yǔ,we / us我们wǒ menor / still还是hái shìto go去qù(completed / change)了le。 – “Although it rained, we still went.” The same written word has a different use.

Give permission or reassurance

  • Before an action, despite尽管jǐn guǎn + verb phrase can mean “go ahead” or “feel free”: to have / there is有yǒuquestion问题wèn tídespite尽管jǐn guǎnto ask问wèn / want / think / miss想xiǎngvariant of 吃吃chīwhat什么shén medespite尽管jǐn guǎnpoint点diǎn。
  • you你nǐdespite尽管jǐn guǎnto feel relieved放心fàng xīn,这件zhè jiànmatter事shìto give交给jiāo gěiI / me我wǒ。 means “Rest assured; leave this to me.” Read it as reassurance, not a statement that an action has already succeeded.

  • despite尽管jǐn guǎnto rain下雨xià yǔ,we / us我们wǒ menor / still还是hái shìto go去qù(completed / change)了le acknowledges rain while saying the expected obstacle did not prevent the trip.
  • This concessive use can also pair with but但是dàn shì or a similar contrast. A sentence with despite尽管jǐn guǎn is not automatically an invitation just because a verb follows somewhere later.
尽管 gives an invitation in one context and acknowledges an obstacle in another

Use the clauses to identify the function

  • In to have / there is有yǒuquestion问题wèn tídespite尽管jǐn guǎnto ask问wèn, the speaker encourages asking. In despite尽管jǐn guǎnto have / there is有yǒuquestion问题wèn tí,we / us我们wǒ menor / still还是hái shìto complete完成wán chéng(completed / change)了lemission任务rèn wù, the speaker acknowledges problems but reports completion.
  • Compare the relation between the clauses. Classifying the second example as broken would confuse a valid different use with a word-order error.

Respect the scope of the invitation

  • “Feel free to ask” concerns the stated activity in that exchange. It does not grant unlimited permission to unrelated actions.
  • A speaker may later qualify or withdraw an invitation. That can be confusing or inconsiderate, but it is a communication issue rather than proof that the original construction is ungrammatical.

Choose invitation or contrast from context

  • To encourage a hesitant learner, use to have / there is有yǒuquestion问题wèn tídespite尽管jǐn guǎnto ask问wèn。 To acknowledge an obstacle, use a complete contrast such as despite尽管jǐn guǎnto rain下雨xià yǔ,we / us我们wǒ menor / still还是hái shìto go去qù(completed / change)了le。
  • Identify the intended function before choosing the English wording. as much as possible尽量jǐn liàng expresses feasible effort; permission-giving despite尽管jǐn guǎn encourages an action without hesitation.

despite尽管jǐn guǎn can encourage an action or introduce a concession. Complete clauses show which use is intended; a different valid use is not a broken invitation.

candid干脆gān cuì (just / simply / might as well)

The group stops debating and changes the plan

  • Three attempts to repair a bag have failed. Someone says candid干脆gān cuìto exchange换huàn一个yí gè(suggestion)吧ba。 – “Let us just replace it, then.” The speaker proposes a direct way forward.
  • candid干脆gān cuì presents a decision as straightforward. It does not prove the choice is cheapest, best or impossible to reverse.

Put candid干脆gān cuì before the proposed action

  • Use subject + candid干脆gān cuì + verb phrase, or lead a suggestion with candid干脆gān cuì: he / him他tācandid干脆gān cuìmountain pass关guān(completed / change)了lecell phone手机shǒu jī / candid干脆gān cuì别去了bié qù le。
  • Keep candid干脆gān cuì together. In the neutral written pattern here, it comes before the action or decision it modifies.

just干脆gāncuìdo not别biégo去qù了le。

Distinguish the decision from its quality

  • variant of 修修xiū(completed / change)了lethird三次sān cì还坏hái huài,candid干脆gān cuìto exchange换huàn一个yí gè(suggestion)吧ba presents replacement as a direct response to failed repairs. The sentence does not contain enough information to calculate the best financial choice.
  • A reader can understand the proposed decision while disagreeing with it. A decisiveness word is not independent evidence that the action is sensible.
A direct choice is not a guarantee of the best outcome

A later reversal is still possible

  • he / him他tācandid干脆gān cuìmountain pass关guān(completed / change)了lecell phone手机shǒu jī,afterwards后来hòu láiagain又yòuto open打开dǎ kāi(completed / change)了le。 can describe a direct initial action followed by a later change.
  • The reversal does not automatically make the sentence ungrammatical. Explain the change in context rather than treating candid干脆gān cuì as a promise that the decision lasts forever.

Recognise the descriptive adjective

  • she / her她tāto reply回答huí dá(degree marker)得dedegree / adjective linker很hěncandid干脆gān cuì。 describes a clear, decisive manner of answering. Here candid干脆gān cuì is part of a description, not simply “might as well answer.”
  • Compare she / her她tācandid干脆gān cuìnot不bùto reply回答huí dá(completed / change)了le。 – “She simply stopped answering.” Word position and the rest of the sentence distinguish the uses.

Interpret a choice without adding a guarantee

  • For a direct suggestion, candid干脆gān cuìoneself自己zì jǐto make做zuò(suggestion)吧ba means “Let us just do it ourselves, then.” State what decision is proposed.
  • Keep separate questions separate: is it a direct choice, is it a good choice, and does the person later change it? The modifier answers only part of that account.

candid干脆gān cuì can modify a direct action or describe a decisive manner. It does not guarantee that the choice is objectively best or permanent.

(not) any more再也zài yě + not不bù / not / haven't没méi + … (completed / change)了le (never again)

Two friends have not met since graduation

  • graduation毕业bì yèback后hòuwe / us我们wǒ men(not) any more再也zài yěnot / haven't没méi见过面jiàn guò miàn。 – “After graduation, we have not met again.” This reports the absence of another meeting during the stated period.
  • Compare I / me我wǒ(not) any more再也zài yě不去bù qù那家店nà jiā diàn(completed / change)了le。 – “I will never go to that shop again.” That is a strong decision about future visits, not the same kind of past report.

Express a strong intention with not不bù

  • (not) any more再也zài yě + not不bù + verb phrase + (completed / change)了le can express “never again”: I / me我wǒ(not) any more再也zài yě不去bù qù(completed / change)了le / I / me我wǒ(not) any more再也zài yě不买bù mǎithis这个zhè ge(completed / change)了le。
  • The wording presents a firm stance. It does not make it logically impossible for a person to change their mind later.

I我wǒever again再也zài yěnot不bùgo去qù了le。

Report no repetition with not / haven't没méi

  • (not) any more再也zài yě + not / haven't没méi + verb phrase can report that something did not happen again: graduation毕业bì yèback后hòuwe / us我们wǒ men(not) any more再也zài yěnot / haven't没méi见过面jiàn guò miàn。
  • This example has (experienced)过guo and no final (completed / change)了le. Do not require every (not) any more再也zài yě sentence to end in (completed / change)了le or turn a report so far into proof about every future day.
A strong future decision differs from a report of no meeting since graduation

Compare absence, refusal and inability

  • (not) any more再也zài yěnot / haven't没méi见过面jiàn guò miàn reports no further meeting. (not) any more再也zài yě不去bù qù那家店nà jiā diàn(completed / change)了le presents an intention not to visit. (not) any more再也zài yěto try to find找zhǎonot to arrive不到bú dào那本书nà běn shū(completed / change)了le reports inability to find the book now.
  • All concern no recurrence or continuation in context, but their time and reason differ. Read the negative predicate and the stated boundary.

State the relevant time boundary

  • “After graduation” supplies a starting point for the no-meeting account. It does not by itself state that meeting again is impossible.
  • For an outcome question, distinguish what is reported from what is predicted. A sentence about past absence needs additional evidence before a permanent-future claim.

Translate the whole negative pattern

  • To state a firm decision, use a suitable not不bù pattern. To report no further experience, use a suitable not / haven't没méi pattern with the context.
  • Keep (not) any more再也zài yě with its negative expression in the patterns taught here. Explain the actual meaning rather than treating all examples as an angry refusal.

(not) any more再也zài yěnot不bù…(completed / change)了le can state a strong “never again” intention. (not) any more再也zài yěnot / haven't没méi… can report no repetition in a stated period. Read the negative predicate and the time boundary; final (completed / change)了le is not compulsory everywhere.

A classmate used to live in Shanghai

  • I / me我wǒonce曾经céng jīngto live住zhùat / in在zàiShanghai municipality…上海shàng hǎi。 – “I once lived in Shanghai.” The classmate points to an earlier part of their life.
  • Compare I / me我wǒnext year明年míng niánto go去qùShanghai municipality…上海shàng hǎi。 – “I will go to Shanghai next year.” A future plan is different from an earlier experience or state.

Place once曾经céng jīng before the past predicate

  • Use subject + once曾经céng jīng + predicate: I / me我wǒonce曾经céng jīngto live住zhùat / in在zàiShanghai municipality…上海shàng hǎi / she / her她tāonce曾经céng jīngdegree / adjective linker很hěnshy害羞hài xiū。 The predicate can describe a past activity or state.
  • once曾经céng jīng does not require (experienced)过guo after every predicate. she / her她tāonce曾经céng jīngdegree / adjective linker很hěnshy害羞hài xiū is a complete past-state example without it.

Distinguish an earlier state from an exact count

  • I / me我wǒonce曾经céng jīngat / in在zàiShanghai municipality…上海shàng hǎito work工作gōng zuò(experienced)过guo says the work belongs to an earlier experience. I / me我wǒonly只zhǐ去过qù guòfirst一次yī cì says the number of visits was one.
  • once曾经céng jīng alone supplies neither an exact date nor a count. Add those details when they are relevant instead of inferring them from the English word “once.”

  • Without a present clause, do not invent every detail of the person’s current life. The earlier-state framing does not establish their current address, job or exact feelings.

Choose a past example and keep its limits

  • For a former role, he / him他tāonce曾经céng jīngat or in the very same...当dāng(experienced)过guoteacher老师lǎo shī is suitable. For an earlier state, she / her她tāonce曾经céng jīngdegree / adjective linker很hěnshy害羞hài xiū is suitable without (experienced)过guo.
  • In a new account, identify the past predicate, whether an experience marker fits, and any explicit count or present contrast. Do not add those facts yourself.

A safety instruction is easy to miss

Meaning contrast for the complete examples

Compare an earnest action with a habit

  • over and over again再三zài sānto remind提醒tí xǐng highlights repeated attention to a particular point. he / him他tāgeneral总zǒngto arrive late迟到chí dào describes a recurring lateness pattern.

Contrast urgency with refusal

  • 再不去zài bù qù,then / just就jiùthere's not enough time (to…来不及lái bù jí(completed / change)了le warns about delaying a visit. I / me我wǒ(not) any more再也zài yě不去bù qù(completed / change)了le expresses a strong intention not to go again.

  • this这zhè封信fēng xìnI / me我wǒ看了又看kàn le yòu kàn。 The same action is repeated: the speaker looked at the letter again.
  • The expression highlights repetition. It does not state an exact count or prove that the speaker understood the letter.

Repeat the same verb around (completed / change)了leagain又yòu

  • Use 看了又看kàn le yòu kàn、想了又想xiǎng le yòu xiǎng or to ask问wèn(completed / change)了leagain又yòuto ask问wèn for the repeated-action pattern. again又yòu introduces another occurrence of the action.
  • The (completed / change)了le here is not a universal past-tense ending. The full sentence and time expression place the account in time.

he他tālook看kàn了leagain又yòulook看kàn。

Contrast repetition with different actions

  • I / me我wǒ看了又看kàn le yòu kàn repeats looking. I / me我wǒto see看kàn(completed / change)了lecharacter文字wén zì,again又yòuto listen to听tīng(completed / change)了leto record (sound)录音lù yīn sequences reading text and listening to audio.
  • The second account can be grammatical; it simply does not use the same-verb repetition pattern. A different construction is not automatically broken.
Meaning contrast for the complete examples

Repetition does not give an exact count

  • he / him他tāto ask问wèn(completed / change)了leagain又yòuto ask问wèn reports repeated asking. he / him他tāto ask问wèn(completed / change)了lethird三次sān cì explicitly counts three questions or asking occasions in the context.
  • Use the stated count when accuracy matters. Do not infer exactly two or exactly three from the repeated-verb pattern.

Read the following outcome

  • he / him他tā想了又想xiǎng le yòu xiǎng,or / still还是hái shìto refuse拒绝jù jué(completed / change)了le。 Repeated consideration ends in refusal in this account.
  • Repeated thought can lead to different decisions. The final clause supplies the decision rather than the repeated-action form itself.

Keep action, time and outcome separate

  • yesterday evening昨晚zuó wǎnI / me我wǒ看了又看kàn le yòu kàn,finally终于zhōng yúto notice发现fā xiàn(completed / change)了lemistaken错误cuò wù supplies a time, repeated action and eventual discovery. Each part contributes its own information.
  • In a new example, identify which verb repeats, what time is stated and what outcome follows. Avoid adding a count or successful result that is absent.

Fresh-situation answers

R1. 白跑bái pǎo says the trip failed to achieve its purpose; it need not mean that travel was free. Context distinguishes an action in vain from a benefit obtained without paying.

R2. One possible response. store商店shāng diànnot / haven't没méito open a door (lit. and…开门kāi mén,I / me我wǒ白跑bái pǎo(completed / change)了le一趟yī tàng。we / us我们wǒ menagain / then再zàinot不bùto set off出发chū fā,will就要jiù yàoto arrive late迟到chí dào(completed / change)了le。The first reports a failed purpose; the second predicts a consequence if delay continues. It does not report actual lateness yet.
