- A friend speaks loudly. You say more quietly小声点，he / him他still还(ongoing action)在sleep睡觉(attention / emphasis)呢。 — “Keep your voice down; he is still sleeping.” The continuing state is a reason for the reminder.
- still还…(attention / emphasis)呢 can draw attention to a state, but another spoken pattern can evaluate a claimed role ironically. These are related-looking forms with different uses.
Remind the listener that a state continues
- Use subject + still还 + predicate + (attention / emphasis)呢: he / him他still还(ongoing action)在sleep睡觉(attention / emphasis)呢 / time时间still还early早(attention / emphasis)呢。 (attention / emphasis)呢 draws attention to the point in this exchange; it is not a past-tense marker.
- time时间still还early早(attention / emphasis)呢 can reassure someone who is rushing: “It is still early.” The state meaning comes from the sentence, while context and voice shape the tone.
time时间still还early早呢。
Use the word taught here: 时间____早呢，别着急。
还早呢 points to the time still being early in this reassuring exchange.
In 他还在睡觉呢, 还 reports that sleeping is still continuing.
The state-reminder example retains the continuing-state reading.
呢 is a past-tense marker in 时间还早呢.
It draws attention to the point in the exchange; it does not mark past tense.
Recognise an ironic evaluation
- In a critical exchange, still还expert专家(attention / emphasis)呢，even连this这个even都not不to understand懂。 means roughly “An expert, supposedly — yet you do not even understand this.” It challenges the performance expected of that role.
- Do not read this as “still an expert” in the same way as “still sleeping.” It can be sharp criticism, not automatically friendly teasing.
In the critical exchange 还专家呢，连这个都不懂, which reading fits?
The second clause supplies the disappointing performance that motivates the role evaluation.
Compare the two complete exchanges
- more quietly小声点，he / him他still还(ongoing action)在sleep睡觉(attention / emphasis)呢 draws attention to an ongoing activity. still还expert专家(attention / emphasis)呢，even连this这个even都not不to understand懂 contrasts a claimed role with disappointing performance.
- still还say / mention说(attention / emphasis)呢 is also a context-dependent spoken response, often like “Do not even mention it.” Do not build a universal translation from that short phrase alone.

Distinguish the meanings in complete contextual examples, not mechanically correct or reject isolated phrases.
Match each complete example to its function.
The role evaluation is not simply the same as still sleeping.
Keep word order and context separate
- For the ongoing-state pattern, place still还 before the predicate and (attention / emphasis)呢 at the end: he / him他still还(ongoing action)在sleep睡觉(attention / emphasis)呢。 Keep the activity or state that the listener needs to notice.
- A different ending can make a different sentence rather than a broken one. he / him他still还(ongoing action)在sleep睡觉(yes/no ?)吗？ is a question about whether he is still sleeping; it is not the same reminder.

Changing the ending can make a question with a different function.
Interpret before imitating the tone
- Identify whether the speaker points to a continuing state or evaluates a claim. Use the words around the pattern to justify your choice.
- When giving a considerate reminder, state the situation clearly. Do not use an ironic role comment when your goal is simply to explain why someone should be quiet.
Still sleeping: ongoing state. “An expert, supposedly”: ironic evaluation in the stated context. (attention / emphasis)呢 is not a tense marker, and the pattern does not guarantee a friendly tone.

It can express sharp criticism. Context and voice shape its effect.
You want someone to be quiet because a person is sleeping. Which gives the clear reminder?
State the ongoing situation relevant to the requested action.
Recall the situation: Someone is sleeping next door. Decide what the speaker wanted to communicate. Close the examples. Say a Mandarin response, then write it in Chinese. Explain briefly in English what the lesson’s pattern adds. Compare with the model, then change one detail and try again.
This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.
