总 (always / keep on)
IntroducedThe same teammate keeps arriving late
- After several late arrivals, you say he他always总be late迟到。 — “He is always late.” You describe a repeated pattern, possibly with frustration.
- Compare he他yesterday昨天be late迟到(completed / change)了once一次 — “He was late once yesterday.” One reported event is different from a habit.
Describe a recurring pattern
- In this use, subject + always总 + predicate often works like always总是: he他always总be late迟到 / he他always总是be late迟到。
- Give a suitable time or situation boundary: weekend周末he他always总to sleep睡to / arrive到noon中午。 — “At weekends he keeps sleeping until noon.” It is not a claim about every day of his life.
he他always总be late迟到。
Use the recurring-pattern word taught here: 他____迟到。
总 works like 总是 in this habit use.
总 and 总是 overlap in the habit example 他总迟到 / 他总是迟到.
The overlap is stated for this use; it is not universal interchangeability.
周末他总睡到中午 describes a pattern within which boundary?
周末 limits the situation; do not erase it when translating.
Notice the speaker’s evaluation
- you你how / why怎么keep playing总玩cell phone手机? can sound like a complaint: “Why are you always on your phone?” always总 helps present the behaviour as recurring.
- Recurrence is not always negative: she / her她always总help帮助other people别人。 — “She is always helping others.” Do not assign a complaining tone to every sentence containing always总.
Every sentence with 总 expresses a complaint.
她总帮助别人 can present a positive recurring pattern.
Recognise an eventual expectation
- will eventually总会good / become better好(modifier / structural particle)的。 expresses reassurance that things will become better eventually. It is not a report that things have repeatedly improved in the past.
- Do not replace every always总 with always总是 mechanically. always总是can / will会good / become better好(modifier / structural particle)的 tends toward a recurring generalization; will eventually总会good / become better好(modifier / structural particle)的 in this reassuring exchange focuses on an eventual outcome.
Recurring pattern or eventual expectation?
Distinguish the meanings in complete contextual examples, not mechanically correct or reject isolated phrases.
In a reassuring exchange, 总会好的 most naturally means…
The focus here is an eventual positive outcome, not a past count.
Match each example to its time meaning.
A habit, a single event and reassurance about an outcome differ.
Match the evidence to the statement
- A diary entry saying “late once yesterday” supports one event. Several records over a term may support a recurring pattern within that term.
- Everyday “always” can be an exaggeration. If exact counts matter, report them rather than treating always总 as a mathematical claim about every possible occasion.
A record establishes only one late arrival yesterday. Which statement directly matches that evidence?
The record supports the stated single event; a broader pattern needs broader evidence.
Choose the intended time meaning
- For a recurring habit: he他always总be late迟到。 For one event: he他yesterday昨天be late迟到(completed / change)了once一次。 For reassurance about the future: will eventually总会good / become better好(modifier / structural particle)的。
- Read the situation and predicate before translating. A habit, a single event and an eventual expectation are different meanings to practise.
always总 can describe recurrence, as in always总be late迟到, or an eventual expectation, as in will eventually总会good / become better好(modifier / structural particle)的. always总 and always总是 overlap in the habit use; they are not interchangeable in every sentence.

Every 总 can be replaced with 总是 without changing the meaning.
The habit overlap does not make the reassuring eventual-outcome pattern mechanically interchangeable.
Recall the situation: The same teammate keeps arriving late. Decide what the speaker wanted to communicate. Close the examples. Say a Mandarin response, then write it in Chinese. Explain briefly in English what the lesson’s pattern adds. Compare with the model, then change one detail and try again.
This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.
