An African savanna.
A coral reef.
They look nothing alike, but they run on the same rule.
Every living thing here is joined to the others by feeding.
Energy arrives from the Sun and leaks away as heat.
Here is the plan.
Energy flow and food chains.
Food webs and feeding roles.
Pyramids, and why so little energy passes up.
The carbon and nitrogen cycles.
And populations.
The Sun is the main source of energy for almost all life.
Plants catch light energy and store it as chemical energy in food.
Feeding passes that chemical energy along the chain.
At every step some is lost to the environment as heat, from respiration.
So energy flows one way: in as light, out as heat, never recycled.
A food chain shows the transfer of energy from one organism to the next, always beginning with a producer.
Grass, eaten by a rabbit; the rabbit eaten by a fox.
Every arrow points from the organism that is eaten to the one that eats it; it shows which way energy flows.
Name each by position: producer, primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary consumers.
Five words, precisely.
A producer makes its own organic nutrients, using energy from sunlight, in photosynthesis.
A consumer gets its energy by feeding on other organisms.
A herbivore is an animal that eats plants.
A carnivore is an animal that eats other animals.
And a decomposer gets its energy from dead or waste material.
For the producer, you need both halves: organic nutrients, and energy from sunlight.
Join chains together and you get a food web: a network of interconnected food chains.
Grass feeds the rabbit and the insect.
Clover feeds the insect and the mouse.
The fox eats the rabbit and the mouse; the bird eats the insect and the mouse.
Start at a producer and follow one arrow at a time.
Notice the mouse: one species can sit in several chains.
Draw that chain as a stack: an ecological pyramid.
Each layer is a trophic level — the position of an organism in a food chain.
Producers at the wide base, then primary and secondary consumers, then a top carnivore.
The layers shrink as you climb, because only about ten percent of the energy passes up.
The orange arrows show the rest leaving as heat.
Watch the same idea in numbers.
The producers hold ten thousand units of energy.
Only a tenth reaches the primary consumers: one thousand.
A tenth again reaches the secondary consumers: one hundred.
The top consumers are left with ten.
About ninety percent is lost at every step, mostly as heat.
Three kinds of pyramid; the exam compares them.
A pyramid of numbers simply counts the organisms, so the shape can come out wrong: one oak tree feeds hundreds of insects.
A pyramid of biomass shows the total mass at each level, so organism size no longer matters.
Best of all is the pyramid of energy.
It shows the energy transfer accurately, it lets you compare different ecosystems, and it is not upset by different life spans.
Here is a classic exam question: why does a food chain rarely have more than four or five links?
Where does the other ninety percent go?
Most is lost as heat, from respiration.
Some leaves in faeces and urine.
And some parts are never eaten at all, such as bones and roots.
After a few links there is too little energy left to feed anything more, which is why food chains usually have fewer than five trophic levels.
That is also why eating crop plants beats eating animals fed on those crops.
A full exam question.
Producers in a field trap forty thousand kilojoules; the primary consumers receive four thousand.
First, find the percentage passed on.
Divide by the level below, then times one hundred.
Four thousand divided by forty thousand, times one hundred, gives ten percent.
Second, apply that ten percent again.
Ten percent of four thousand kilojoules is four hundred kilojoules — only one percent of what the plants trapped.
Use the ten percent at every step, never once for the whole chain.
Energy flows one way, but nutrients are recycled.
Carbon dioxide in the air is the shared pool.
Photosynthesis takes it out and locks the carbon into plants.
Feeding passes that carbon to animals.
Respiration sends it straight back.
When living things die, decomposition returns their carbon.
Over millions of years dead material becomes fossil fuels, and combustion — burning them — returns that carbon to the air.
Nitrogen next, supplement only.
Living things need nitrogen for proteins, but nitrogen gas in the air is useless until it is changed.
Microorganisms do most of the work.
Nitrogen fixation does that first step: lightning, and some bacteria.
Plants absorb nitrate ions to build amino acids and proteins; animals get theirs by feeding and digestion.
Decomposition breaks dead protein into ammonium ions, and deamination in the liver releases nitrogen compounds from excess amino acids.
Nitrification turns those back into nitrate ions.
Denitrification returns nitrogen gas to the air.
Three words that fit inside each other.
A population is a group of organisms of one species, living in the same area, at the same time.
All three parts are needed: one species, one area, one time.
A community is all the populations of the different species there.
And an ecosystem is that community plus its environment, all interacting.
In a new place with limited resources, a population follows this S-shaped curve.
Four phases.
The lag phase: slow growth, the numbers are still small.
The exponential phase: very fast growth, plenty of food and space.
The stationary phase: the curve flattens at the carrying capacity, births now equal deaths.
And the death phase: numbers fall, as food runs out, wastes build up, or disease spreads.
Four things control the growth rate.
Food supply, which runs short first.
Competition, for food and space.
Predation, being eaten.
And disease, which spreads fast in a crowd.
Now explain the curve.
While it rises, births beat deaths, because resources are plentiful.
At the top, births and deaths are equal, because a limiting factor holds it back.
In the exam, describe the shape, then give the reason.
Both halves earn marks.
Two ways humans damage a food web.
Overharvesting means taking too many of one species.
Overfishing is the classic case, and the numbers crash.
And introducing a foreign species: a new arrival with no predators here, so it spreads and crowds out the natives.
In a web question, trace the arrows outward through the web, and say which populations rise and which fall.
That is the answer they want.
Three marks students throw away.
First, arrow direction.
The arrow points from the eaten to the eater; it shows which way the energy flows.
Second, the ten percent rule.
Apply the ten percent at every step, not once for the whole chain.
Third, the population definition: it needs all three parts, one species, one area, one time.
Get those right, and this topic is yours.
