or / still还是 vs or或者 (or: question vs statement)
Asking or offering?

or / still还是 asks, or或者 states
- or / still还是 = "or" in a question that asks someone to choose: you你to drink tea喝茶or / still还是coffee (loanword)咖啡?

Hidden questions
- After not不to know知道, want / think / miss想to know知道 or to decide (to do something)决定, use or / still还是: I / me我not不to know知道he / him他to go去or / still还是不去。 — "I don't know whether he's going or not."
- I / me我still / also还not / haven't没to decide (to do something)决定to go去Beijing, capital of the…北京or / still还是to go去Shanghai municipality…上海。 — "I haven't decided whether to go to Beijing or Shanghai."
I我still还haven't没decided决定go to去Beijing北京or还是go to去Shanghai上海。
The quick test
- Is someone being asked to choose (even indirectly)? Use or / still还是. Is a possibility being offered? Use or或者.
- Never add (yes/no ?)吗 to a or / still还是 question: you你to go去or / still还是不去?, not you你to go去or / still还是不去(yes/no ?)吗?
or / still还是 = had better
- or / still还是 also means "had better", with no choice involved: 太晚(completed / change)了,we / us我们or / still还是回家吧。 — "It's late; we'd better go home."
- Read the context: two options to choose from, or a recommendation?
too太late晚了,we我们had better还是go home回家吧。

Check meaning and form:
- My response conveys a message that fits the opening situation.
- I can explain the meaning of the pattern, rather than only naming it.
- I tried a second response with a name, time, place, or description changed.
This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.
