Qualifying Your Own Claims ·
Qualify to what your evidence covers, and no less
- Qualification is not softening — it is measuring.
- You narrow the claim until it matches the ground your evidence actually holds.
- Narrow it further than that and you have given away an argument you could have won.
Qualifying a claim is tailoring it to the evidence; do not cut off the sleeves just to be safe.
Four working qualifiers
- Scope: for students who begin below the threshold.
- Condition: where funding depends on the measure.
- Degree: to the extent that the figures are comparable.
- Exception: unless the alternative is available.
Qualify a claim until you can hold it · 把主张限定到你守得住为止
Each step towards an absolute is stronger and easier to refute; each step away is safer and worth less. ·
Select all · 所有 the kinds of qualifier this lesson names.
Exception completes the list; volume is not a kind of qualifier. ·
Qualification and the sophistication point
- A student who states a position, shows they know its limits, and defends it anyway has demonstrated control.
- That is exactly what the sophistication point rewards.
- It is also the most reliably available route to it in a timed essay.
Narrowing a claim further than your evidence requires... ·
The target is the claim that exactly matches what you can defend. ·
Match each move to what it earns. ·
Only the first is precision; the other two are opposite failures. ·
Do not over-qualify. Narrowing further than your evidence requires gives away ground you could have held. The target is the claim that exactly matches what you can defend — not the smallest claim you can be sure of.
"Possibly, in some cases" is a qualifier.
It is a hedge — it states no condition a reader could test. ·
Qualification versus hedging
- A qualifier states a condition; a hedge avoids stating anything.
- Where the measure is tied to funding is a qualifier. Possibly, in some cases is a hedge.
- A reader can test a qualifier against evidence. A hedge offers nothing to test.
To qualify a claim, first name the ____-example that would defeat it as written. ·
Then add the qualifier that excludes exactly that counter-example. ·
A qualification check
- For each claim, name the counter-example that would defeat it as written.
- Then add the qualifier that excludes that counter-example, and only that one.
- If you cannot name a counter-example, the claim may already be safe — or too vague to attack.
Claim: "The measure misleads." Counter-example: a school where it tracks the aim well. Qualifier that excludes exactly that: "Where funding is tied to the measure, it misleads." Nothing more was given away, and the counter-example no longer applies.
Qualify to what your evidence covers, and no less. Use scope, condition, degree and exception qualifiers. A qualifier states a condition a reader can test; a hedge states nothing. Qualification is the most reliable route to the sophistication point.
