A Thesis That Previews Reasoning ·
Two sentences that both work
- "The policy fails." and "The policy fails because it measures effort rather than result."
- Both are defensible theses. The second also tells you the shape of what follows.
- The CED permits either — and warns against turning the second into a formula.
A thesis with a reason is a signpost with a route; a shorter thesis can still name the destination.
What the CED actually says
- A thesis statement may preview the line of reasoning of an argument.
- And then, immediately: this is not to say that a thesis statement must list the reasons.
- Both halves are examinable, and they guard against opposite errors.
The CED requires a thesis statement to list the reasons the essay will give. · CED
It says a thesis may preview the reasoning and is not required to list reasons. ·
Two opposite errors
- A thesis that previews nothing leaves the essay shapeless — the reader cannot tell where it is going.
- A thesis that mechanically lists three reasons often produces a rigid essay that cannot develop.
- The CED's phrasing exists to leave you free of both.
Does this thesis preview well?
Sort each thesis by what it does with the reasoning. ·
Select all · 所有 the errors the CED's double statement guards against.
A defensible thesis is the requirement, not an error. ·
The CED states both halves: a thesis may preview the reasoning, and it is not required to list reasons. Teaching yourself only the first half produces a formula; learning only the second produces a shapeless essay.
If a thesis promises three lines of reasoning and the text delivers one, that gap is itself worth . ·
A promise the text does not keep is a rhetorical choice like any other.
Match each thesis to what it gives the reader. ·
The middle one previews without listing, which is what the CED's phrasing permits.
Reading for a previewing thesis
- When a text's thesis previews its reasoning, the essay's structure is announced in advance.
- Check whether the text actually follows the shape it promised.
- A thesis that promises three lines of reasoning and delivers one is itself worth analysing.
You should preview your reasoning in the thesis when...
Preview when naming the shape helps a reader follow, not to fill a sentence. ·
Deciding for your own essay
- Preview when the shape of your reasoning is genuinely load-bearing — when the order matters to the argument.
- Do not preview when the reasons are simply three things you happen to know.
- Ask: would naming the shape here help a reader follow, or just fill a sentence?
"The scheme should be ended, not because it is expensive but because the expense buys the wrong thing" previews the reasoning without listing reasons: the reader now knows the essay will concede cost and attack purpose.
A thesis may preview the line of reasoning but is not required to list reasons. Previewing nothing leaves the essay shapeless; listing three reasons mechanically produces a rigid one. Preview when the shape of the reasoning is load-bearing.
