Debates in the Early Republic

Handout

The parties kept arguing

  • In the early 1800s, national political parties continued to debate issues such as the tariff, powers of the federal government, and relations with European powers.
  • Continued connects directly to 3.10: these are the same issue areas that produced the parties in the 1790s.
  • So the early republic's politics is a continuation of an argument, not a new set of questions.
