only if (..., or otherwise…除非chú fēi means "unless" — the one exception that changes the outcome. It has two frames pointing opposite ways: contrary逆nìdirection方向fāng xiàngをfinger指zhǐしている：

• only if (..., or otherwise…除非chú fēi … otherwise否则fǒu zé / otherwise要不然yào bù rán … — "unless X, otherwise (the bad result)": 不去bù qù，only if (..., or otherwise…除非chú fēiyou你nǐalso也yěto go去qù，otherwise否则fǒu zéI / me我wǒoneself自己zì jǐto be at home在家zài jiāto wait待dài(ongoing -ing)着zhe — I won't go unless you come; otherwise I'll stay home.
• only if (..., or otherwise…除非chú fēi … otherwise否则fǒu zé / otherwise要不然yào bù rán … — 「X でないto limit限xiànり、 otherwise（Japanese variant of 恶悪èいoutcome結果jié guǒ）」：OK / to walk行xíngかない、あなたがOK / to walk行xíngかないto limit限xiànりは。 Try it. Set a playful condition on a plan: only if (..., or otherwise…除非chú fēidown下xiàheavy rain大雨dà yǔ，we / us我们wǒ mentomorrow明天míng tiānall / both都dōuto go去qùto climb a mountain爬山pá shān。

(Chúfēi xià dàyǔ, wǒmen míngtiān dōu qù páshān.) — Unless it pours, we're hiking tomorrow. Say it with the only then / not until才cái-shrug in your voice: one condition, one exception.

1. Put otherwise否则fǒu zé into the frame: 不去bù qù，only if (..., or otherwise…除非chú fēiyou你nǐalso也yěto go去qù，…
