Giving a short talk · Dar una breve charla
An example keeps a short answer useful
- “I like the market” gives a point. “I like the market because I can try local food; last week I watched a cook make noodles” adds a reason and example.
- Develop ideas that answer the actual topic. More words do not help if the answer moves away from the question.
Plan a two-minute talk · Planificar una charla de dos minutos
Angle, three points, an example each, a frame — a talk plans itself in one minute. · Ángulo, tres puntos, un ejemplo cada uno, un marco: una charla se planifica en un minuto.
In a short talk, you should… · En una breve charla, debes…
Develop your points, don't just list them. · Desarrolla tus puntos, no solo los listes.
Use a few clear cues
- Choose a manageable point, reason and example. For a practice talk on a place, you might describe one activity and explain why it matters to you.
- Follow the exam or classroom instructions about preparation, time and notes. Do not assume notes are allowed because they help during practice.
Use a phrase like 'for ___' to give an example. · Usa una frase como 'por ___' para dar un ejemplo.
'For example' introduces an example. · 'Por ejemplo' introduce un ejemplo.
Write one full sentence describing your favourite food, with a reason. · Escribe una oración completa describiendo tu comida favorita, con una razón.
Example: 'My favourite food is noodles because they are warm and tasty.' · Ejemplo: 'Mi comida favorita son los fideos porque están calientes y sabrosos.'
Connect meaning rather than filling silence
- “For example” introduces an example; “that is why” links a conclusion to a reason. Use a phrase only when that relationship fits.
- A clear simple sentence can be better than a memorised phrase with no connection to the topic.
Speaking very fast is more important than speaking clearly. · Hablar muy rápido es más importante que hablar claramente.
No — clear is better than fast. · No: claro es mejor que rápido.
Keep communication moving
- Speak at a pace that lets the listener follow. Use pronunciation and intonation to make meaning clear; speed alone is not fluency.
- If a word is missing, describe it: “the place where people buy vegetables”. Then return to the point rather than stopping the whole talk.
Put the talk-planning steps in order. · Coloca los pasos de planificación de la charla en orden.
Choose a relevant angle, organise points and examples, then frame the practice talk. This does not set official preparation time or guarantee confidence.
You forget “stall” while describing a market. Which move best keeps the meaning clear?
A short description preserves the meaning and lets you continue the relevant point.
Review a practice attempt
- Record a permitted practice talk, then check whether each point has support and answers the topic. Notice unclear references or repeated phrases.
- Prepare ideas and practise flexible wording. A fixed script can become difficult to adapt when the question changes.
