Character and Environment · Personaje y Entorno
A place is evidence about a person
- The environment a character inhabits provides information about that character.
- That is one sentence in the CED and an enormous amount of usable evidence.
- A room, a workplace, a route walked daily: each is characterisation that never mentions the character.
A spotless desk is not proof of a spotless mind, but it is a detail worth questioning.
Two directions, and the text picks one
- Either the character shaped the environment — what they chose, kept, arranged.
- Or the environment shaped the character — what they had no say in.
- Which direction the text supports changes the meaning completely, so decide before you write.
Before writing about a character and their environment, you must decide...
The same detail supports opposite readings depending on the direction.
What a character notices
- When the environment is described through a character's eyes, the description is doubly evidence.
- It tells you the place, and it tells you what that person looks at first.
- Two characters in one room produce two different rooms.
A description of a place seen through a character's eyes is evidence about the place only.
It is · Es doubly evidence — it also tells you what that person looks at first.
Decide the direction before you write. He keeps the room bare (he shaped it) and the room he was given is bare (it shaped him) use the same detail for opposite readings — and only one of them is supported by any given text.

Look for the one object in the room that nobody there would have chosen.
Mismatch is the strongest case
- A character who does not fit their environment gives you the sharpest evidence of all.
- The mismatch names what they are by naming what surrounds them and is wrong.
- Look for the one object in the room that nobody there would have chosen.

One clause decides the direction, and everything follows from it.
An environment pass
- List what is in the environment, and mark what the character chose.
- Decide the direction: did they shape it, or did it shape them?
- Find the mismatch — the thing that does not belong — and say what it tells you.
The room is bare except for a good chair, too fine for the house. If he chose it, the chair is a memory of a life he expected. If it came with the room, it is a reproach he cannot remove. The story settles it in one clause — "the chair had been his mother's" — and everything follows from that.
The environment a character inhabits provides information about that character. Decide the direction — did the character shape the place, or the place shape them? A description through a character's eyes is doubly evidence, and a mismatch between person and place is the sharpest evidence of all.
