A replay result cannot replace the first result
- In an original study log, a learner gets 3 of 5 correct on the first attempt, 5 of 5 after replay and transcript review, then 4 of 5 on a fresh clip. The three raw accuracies are 60%, 100% and 80%, with different conditions.
- The reviewed 100% shows success with familiar material and help; it does not turn the original attempt into 100%. The fresh 80% is another observation, not proof of a permanent gain or an official band. The replay is a tutor, not a time machine.
What is the right order when you practise a recording?
Use one play for the independent attempt, then replay to locate errors. Later success is evidence for review and learning, kept separate from first-attempt accuracy.

Diagnose a cue before choosing a drill
- A learner chooses Wednesday instead of Thursday. Replay might reveal a sound confusion, or “Wednesday—sorry, Thursday” might reveal an ignored correction. Compare audio, transcript and selected answer before deciding which error occurred.
- Practise the identified feature, then change the day or sentence in a fresh recording. Recalling Thursday from the same clip does not establish transfer. Keep notes on error types rather than only answer letters.
Listen-and-repeat and shadowing are different drills
- In listen-and-repeat, hear a sentence, let it finish, then say it back. In shadowing, follow the speaker closely while the recording continues. Reading a transcript aloud without attending to the audio is not the same listening demand.
- Either can be a practice tool, but neither guarantees improvement. For the test’s Listen and Repeat task, rehearse hearing first and responding afterwards under the actual instructions; use recordings to compare words, endings and intelligibility.
Which description distinguishes shadowing from listen-and-repeat?
Shadowing follows closely during playback. Listen-and-repeat is sequential: hear the sentence, then respond. They have different timing demands.
Choose a manageable cycle with a fresh check
- A short regular session can be practical: independent attempt → focused review → a fresh check. Fifteen focused minutes daily is one possible schedule, not a scientifically fixed optimum or a promise of faster learning.
- Pick one error to investigate and leave time for transfer. If attention has faded, a longer session is not automatically better. Match the cycle to your available time and the recordings you can actually use.
Which schedule offers a regular, manageable practice opportunity?
A short daily session can be easier to sustain. Its effectiveness depends on attention and the work you do; no fixed schedule guarantees faster learning.
Test the cost of your note system
- Practise a few familiar abbreviations before relying on them under time pressure. Compare whether “Thu / C / ID” keeps the required facts or whether writing makes you miss a correction in the next sentence.
- Keep or revise the method from that evidence. A full transcript may be distracting, but every learner and task need not use the same outline. Reading this example tests the decision about notes; it does not test concurrent listening and writing.
It is sensible to practise a note system before relying on it during timed listening.
Use familiar short notes and check on real audio whether writing distracts you from the next point. Improvement takes practice and varies between learners.
