Evaluate college fit and prepare an interview answer ·
A famous name cannot answer every fit question
- Lina has two fictional offers to investigate: Northbridge College and Riverstone College. A friend recommends Northbridge because it is better known. Lina still needs to check course content, entry conditions, total cost, support and the learning environment.
- This original GAC032-aligned practice uses invented institutions and figures. It is not advice to apply to a real college. For real decisions, check current official course and admissions information; an attractive comparison table can contain outdated assumptions.
Why is reputation alone insufficient for Lina’s comparison?
Reputation is only one piece of information and does not answer the learner’s specific conditions and needs. ·
Check conditions before ranking preferences
- Record required subjects, language evidence, application documents and deadlines from the institution's current sources. Mark each as confirmed, not met or unknown. An unknown requirement cannot honestly be treated as met simply because the course appeals to you.
- Then compare preferences such as teaching approach, class size, location and activities. Use questions that connect to your profile. “Does this course provide supervised practical work?” is clearer than “Is this college good?”
An unknown entry condition should be recorded as met if a learner likes the course. ·
Unknown and met are different statuses. Check the authoritative requirement before deciding eligibility. ·
Compare the whole scenario
- Lina estimates an annual total using tuition, accommodation and other necessary living costs. The fictional Northbridge estimate is 70,000 + 30,000 + 20,000 = 120,000 RMB. Riverstone is 65,000 + 35,000 + 25,000 = 125,000 RMB. Lower tuition does not mean a lower total here.
- Keep the assumptions visible. These examples exclude travel and unexpected costs and are not real prices. A possible scholarship is separate from a confirmed award. Compare both an unfunded scenario and any funded scenario actually documented.
| Fictional option | Tuition | Accommodation | Other living costs | Annual subtotal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northbridge | 70,000 | 30,000 | 20,000 | 120,000 |
| Riverstone | 65,000 | 35,000 | 25,000 | 125,000 |
Do not subtract an advertised maximum scholarship from every applicant's budget. Eligibility, competition and confirmation matter. An unconfirmed award is not money already available.
How many RMB higher is Riverstone’s fictional annual subtotal? · Riverstone
125,000 − 120,000 = 5,000 RMB. The subtotals exclude travel and unexpected costs. · 125,000 − 120,000 = 5,000 RMB。
Ask a question that resolves an unknown
- Lina has read that a course includes group projects but cannot find how feedback is provided. She asks, “For first-year group work, is feedback given on an individual contribution as well as the group product?” Keep the reply and its date rather than relying on a remembered conversation.
- Check whether the person answering has the right role. Student experience can illustrate everyday life, while the admissions office confirms formal requirements. If sources disagree, record the conflict and seek clarification; do not average incompatible rules.
Which TWO steps help resolve conflicting requirement information? ·
Preserve the conflict and ask the responsible institution. Inventing an average does not create a valid requirement. ·
Connect an interview answer with evidence
- An answer to “Why this course?” should connect a real course feature, your experience and a question you want to develop. Avoid repeating the whole prospectus or claiming the course guarantees a particular job. You should be able to explain every example in your own words.
- Practise a 60-second answer and a follow-up question. A partner checks whether the feature is specific, the personal example is truthful and the connection is explained. Clear evidence matters more than sounding like a memorised advertisement.
“Your course description includes supervised design projects. In our library-sign task, reader feedback changed my first layout. I want to practise that process more systematically and learn how to justify decisions. Could you explain how first-year students receive feedback during a project?”
Which interview answer is strongest? ·
The answer connects a specific course feature with truthful experience and a learning purpose, without guarantees. ·
Make a provisional shortlist you can defend
- Compare two options using conditions, preferences and a realistic cost scenario. Name one reason each could fit and one unresolved issue. A shortlist should show why an option deserves further investigation, not announce certainty from incomplete data.
- Save source links and review dates. Then practise one interview answer and identify one statement that still needs checking. Remove or qualify it before using the answer in a real application.
Fit means a match between your profile and verified course conditions, learning opportunities and practical circumstances. Reputation alone cannot establish that match.
