A deadline is not a complete pathway
- Lina writes “submit application on 1 December” in her plan. She also needs evidence of qualifications, a reference and an essay. If she begins all three on 30 November, a complete submission may be impossible even though she remembers the final date.
- This original GAC032-aligned practice uses a fictional application. A pathway connects actions, dependencies, review points and alternatives. Real requirements and deadlines must be checked with the institution; the example date is not an actual college deadline.

Work backwards through dependencies
- List the required items, then identify what must happen before each can be complete. A referee needs time and relevant information; an essay review needs a draft; proofreading needs a reasonably settled text. Tasks can overlap, but their dependencies do not disappear.
- Set internal dates earlier than the external deadline and leave room for problems. Lina asks for the reference on 1 November, drafts the essay by 8 November, receives feedback by 15 November and checks the complete application by 22 November.

Request a reference respectfully
- Explain the application, deadline, submission method and why you are asking that person. Provide a concise record of relevant work, not a fabricated description for them to sign. Ask whether they can support the request rather than assuming their agreement.
- Keep a status such as requested, agreed or submitted. A polite reminder can be appropriate before a confirmed deadline, but sending a request is not proof the reference has been received by the institution. Check the legitimate status channel.
Never write another person's endorsement and submit it as if they had approved it. Keep your own essay truthful, and follow the institution's rules on assistance and authorship.

Evaluate what the essay actually answers
- Start with the prompt, not with a list of impressive adjectives. If it asks about a challenge and learning, identify the challenge, your response, evidence and reflection. A story about winning a prize may be irrelevant unless it explains the requested point.
- Compare “I am a natural leader” with a specific account: “When our group missed a draft deadline, I helped divide the remaining work and recorded who would check each file. We submitted on time, but my earlier instructions had been unclear.” The second shows action and learning without pretending perfection.
Review questions: Does the draft answer the prompt? Is the contribution genuinely mine? Can I support the result? Have I explained what changed in my thinking? Does the wording remain my own after feedback?

Revise ideas before polishing sentences
- First fix an irrelevant example, an unsupported claim or a missing reflection. Then improve paragraph order and clarity; check grammar and length after the main content is sound. Correct spelling cannot make an invented experience acceptable.
- Ask a reviewer to identify a confusing point and explain why it is confusing. You decide how to revise within the application rules. Keep drafts so you can see the changes and discuss the experience honestly in an interview.

Review the pathway and keep an alternative
- Check whether tasks are complete, delayed or waiting on someone else. If a reference is unavailable, ask the institution about permitted alternatives rather than silently substituting an unauthorised person. A backup must satisfy the real requirements.
- Create your own six-action pathway with owners, dates, dependencies and a review. Then evaluate a short draft against its prompt. Record one change to the content and one remaining uncertainty; do not treat clicking submit as confirmation of acceptance.
A pathway is a sequence of verified actions. A strong application essay answers the actual prompt with truthful evidence and reflection in the applicant's own voice.
