Empires fall and are replaced
- Empires collapsed in different regions of the world and in some areas were replaced by new imperial states, including the Mongol khanates.
- So the Mongols are, in the CED's framing, part of a pattern of collapse and replacement — not an interruption of history.
- The khanates 汗国 were the successor states into which the empire divided.
The CED's mechanism for how imperial expansion helped trade is that... · CED
A bigger network moves more, and one authority means fewer borders. ·
Conquest widened the network
- The expansion of empires — including the Mongols — facilitated Afro-Eurasian trade and communication as new people were drawn into their conquerors' economies and trade networks.
- The mechanism is in the sentence: conquest draws people in, and a bigger network moves more.
- One authority across a long route also means fewer borders, fewer tolls and fewer separate agreements.
Select all · 所有 the transfers the CED names for this period.
The potato belongs to the Columbian Exchange, unit 4. ·
Contact moved knowledge, not only goods
- Interregional contacts and conflicts between states and empires, including the Mongols, encouraged significant technological and cultural transfers.
- The CED's examples: Greco-Islamic medical knowledge reaching western Europe, numbering systems reaching Europe, and the adoption of Uyghur script
- Note and conflicts: transfer happened through war as well as through trade.
Continuity, change, or a transfer? ·
Sort each Mongol-era item. ·
Transfers happened only through peaceful trade. ·
The CED writes contacts and conflicts — war moved knowledge too. · CED
The CED's sentence includes conflicts, not only trade. Technological and cultural transfers came through contacts and conflicts — a besieging army, a captured city's craftsmen and a resettled scribe move knowledge as surely as a caravan does.
The successor states into which the Mongol Empire divided are called . ·
The CED places them in a pattern of collapse and replacement. · CED
Continuity and change at once
- The objective asks for the significance of the Mongol Empire in larger patterns of continuity and change.
- Change: new rulers, new khanates, routes joined under one authority, scripts and sciences moved.
- Continuity: the trade routes, the cities, the Confucian and Islamic institutions the Mongols largely governed through.
The strongest Mongol answers... ·
"Significance in larger patterns" asks for a mechanism, not a verdict.
Writing about the Mongols
- The strongest answers do not argue whether the Mongols were destructive or beneficial.
- They name a specific transfer, say what route or conquest carried it, and say what changed at the far end.
- That is what "significance in larger patterns" asks for — a mechanism, not a verdict.
Numbering systems reach Europe not because a European sought them out but because conquest and commerce put scholars, merchants and administrators from several regions into the same empire's service. The transfer is a by-product of one authority spanning a long route — which is the CED's stated mechanism.
