Talent, Liberty and Common Sense ·
Two sources, pulling the same way
- Enlightenment ideas and philosophy inspired many American political thinkers to emphasise individual talent over hereditary privilege, while religion strengthened Americans' view of themselves as a people blessed with liberty.
- One sentence, two sources — a secular argument and a religious self-understanding — reinforcing each other.
- Individual talent over hereditary privilege is a claim about who should hold office, not only about equality in the abstract.
Select both · 两者 sources the CED puts in one sentence.
A secular argument and a religious self-understanding. ·
Two documents, and their reach
- The colonists' belief in the superiority of republican forms of government based on the natural rights of the people found expression in Thomas Paine's Common Sense and the Declaration of Independence.
- The ideas in these documents resonated throughout American history, shaping Americans' understanding of the ideals on which the nation was based.
- Throughout American history is the CED reaching past 1800 — these documents are treated as a permanent reference point.
'Individual talent over hereditary privilege' is a claim about...
Not only about equality in the abstract. ·
Why the two sources fit together
- A philosophy that grounds authority in natural rights and a faith that describes a people as blessed with liberty reach the same practical conclusion.
- Neither needs the other to be true; both make hereditary rule look like an accident rather than an order.
- The CED puts them in one sentence because in this period they were used together.

The Federalist Papers belong to 3.8.
The same practice acquired a new justification. Self-rule had been a local habit produced by distance and Britain's initially lax attention (2.3); the Revolution made it a principle grounded in the natural rights of the people — so "change" here is a change of justification, and saying so is more accurate than claiming self-government was new.
The CED says these documents' ideas resonated throughout American history. · CED
They are treated as a permanent reference point. ·
What 'changed' means here
- The objective is about attitudes changing in the years leading up to the Revolution, so a before-and-after is required.
- Before: authority derived from the crown and from inherited standing, with self-rule as a local habit.
- After: authority derived from the people's natural rights, with self-rule as a principle — the same practice, newly justified.
The change in attitudes is best described as a change of...
Self-rule was already a habit; it became a principle. ·
How and why attitudes changed
- How: from privilege toward talent, and from habit toward principle.
- Why: because Enlightenment philosophy supplied the argument and religion supplied the self-image, while 3.3's policies supplied the occasion.
- An answer with all three — argument, self-image, occasion — is complete.
A town has chosen its own officers for a hundred years because nobody in London bothered to stop it. Then someone writes down why it was entitled to all along. Nothing about the meeting changes, and everything about what it means does.
