Punctuation as Argument · 标点作为论证
A semicolon makes a claim
- A full stop says: two separate statements.
- A semicolon says: these belong together, and neither outranks the other.
- The facts are identical. The punctuation asserted a relationship between them.
A semicolon introduces two sentences as equals; it is not a decorative comma wearing a tie.
一个分号在作出主张
- 句号说的是:两个各自独立的陈述。
- 分号说的是:这两者属于一处,而且谁也不高于谁。
- 事实完全相同。是标点断言了两者之间的关系。
分号让两个分句平等见面;它可不是打了领带的逗号。
Why conventions matter
- Grammar and mechanics that follow established conventions enable clear communication.
- Conventions are shared, so a reader can rely on them without being told.
- Breaking one costs the reader attention they were spending on your argument.
惯例为何要紧
- 遵循既定惯例的语法与格式使清晰的表达成为可能。
- 惯例是共享的,因此读者无需被告知就能依赖它们。
- 打破一条惯例,会消耗读者本来花在你论证上的注意力。
Punctuation advances the argument
- Writers use punctuation strategically to demonstrate relationships among ideas in a sentence.
- The CED lists them: commas, colons, semicolons, dashes, hyphens, parentheses, quotation marks and end marks.
- Punctuation advances the argument — the CED's own phrase, and it is not decorative language.
标点推进论证
- 写作者策略性地使用标点,以显示句内观念之间的关系。
- CED 一一列出:逗号、冒号、分号、破折号、连字符、括号、引号与句末符号。
- 标点推进论证——这是 CED 自己的说法,而它不是修辞性的美化。
What does this mark assert? · 这个符号表达了什么主张?
Match each mark to the relationship it claims. · 将每个符号与其所主张的关系匹配。
The CED says punctuation advances the argument. · CED指出标点是推动论证的手段。
It is the CED's own phrase, and it means punctuation is analysable as argument. · 这是CED的原话,意指标点可被分析为一种论证手段。
Select all · 所有 the marks the CED names as advancing an argument. · 选择CED提及的所有能推动论证的符号。
Commas, hyphens, parentheses, quotation marks and end marks complete the list. · 逗号、连字符、括号、引号和句末符号构成了完整列表。
"The writer uses a semicolon" is not analysis. Every punctuation mark asserts a relationship — say which relationship, and what it lets the reader do or prevents them doing. The CED's phrase is that punctuation advances the argument.
"写作者使用了分号"不是分析。每个标点符号都断言一种关系——要说出是哪一种关系,以及它让读者能做什么或不能做什么。CED 的说法是:标点推进论证。
A colon promises the reader that what follows will... · 冒号向读者承诺后续内容将...
That promise is the relationship the mark asserts. · 这一承诺正是该符号所主张的关系。
Match each mark to what it asserts. · 将每个符号与其主张的内容匹配。
Naming the relationship is the analysis; naming the mark is not. · 命名关系才是分析;命名符号则不是。
What each mark asserts
- A colon promises that what follows explains what preceded.
- A semicolon asserts two independent statements belong together as equals.
- A dash interrupts — and the interruption is itself the emphasis.
- Parentheses rank material as secondary while keeping it on the page.
每个符号断言了什么
- 冒号承诺其后的内容将解释其前的内容。
- 分号断言两个独立陈述作为对等项属于一处。
- 破折号打断——而这一打断本身就是强调。
- 括号在把材料留在纸面上的同时,把它排为次要。
Italics and boldface are examples of design features that create ____. · 斜体和粗体是创造____的设计特征示例。
They do the same job as punctuation by other means. · 它们通过其他方式发挥与标点相同的作用。
Design features
- Some design features, such as italics or boldface, create emphasis.
- They are examinable alongside punctuation because they do the same job by other means.
- A writer who italicises one word in a paragraph has ranked it above every other.
版面手段
- 某些版面手段,如斜体或粗体,制造强调。
- 它们与标点一并可考,因为它们以别的方式做着同样的工作。
- 在一段中把某一个词标为斜体的写作者,已经把它排在了其余所有词之上。
"The programme was popular; it was also, by every measure the department itself proposed, ineffective." The semicolon refuses contrast and presents both as simultaneously true; the parenthetical then removes the department's escape route before the word ineffective arrives.
*"这个项目很受欢迎;按照该部门自己提出的每一项指标,它也是无效的。"*分号拒绝了对照,把两者呈现为同时为真;随后的插入成分则在"无效"一词到来之前,先切断了该部门的退路。
Conventions enable clear communication, and punctuation advances the argument by demonstrating relationships among ideas. A colon explains, a semicolon joins as equals, a dash interrupts, parentheses rank as secondary — and design features like italics create emphasis by other means.
惯例使清晰的表达成为可能,而标点通过显示观念之间的关系推进论证。冒号解释,分号以对等身份连接,破折号打断,括号把内容排为次要——而斜体等版面手段以别的方式制造强调。
