Here is the puzzle at the centre of this period.
An American farmer in 1890 grew more wheat than his father ever had, with better machines, on more land, shipped further. 1890
And he earned less for it.
That is not bad luck and it is not a mood.
It is three mechanisms, and naming them is what separates a scoring answer from a vague one.
Westward expansion after the Civil War is where this starts.
Start with what changed.
Improvements in mechanization raised agricultural production substantially, and railroads carried crops to national and world markets.
Both are genuine gains.
But consolidation in agricultural markets turned those same gains against the farmer: high freight rates on the only railroad serving his county, expensive credit, and falling crop prices as output rose everywhere at once.
Freight, credit, prices.
Meanwhile the West itself was being taken: federal policy moved from treaties to reservations and then to assimilation through the Dawes Act, which divided communal land into individual plots and handed the surplus to settlers.
The rise of industrial capitalism is the other half of the same economy.
The industrial side of the same economy.
Large-scale production with massive technological change produced enormous output and enormous firms.
Three things made that possible: new corporate structures, trusts and holding companies, which allowed consolidation and in some industries near-monopoly; new transportation and communication networks, above all the railroad, creating a genuinely national market; and a defence of the result.
Business leaders argued laissez-faire: competition promotes growth, so government should stay out.
The same period produced rising inequality and recurring financial panics, which is exactly why the economy became the central political question.
A variety of perspectives on the economy and labour developed.
Now the tip that saves the most marks.
One economy, read four different ways, each with its own remedy.
Laissez-faire says the outcome is efficient, so the remedy is nothing.
Social Darwinism uses evolutionary language to say the outcome is natural, so the remedy is again nothing, but for a different reason.
The Gospel of Wealth accepts the outcome and says the wealthy carry a moral obligation to spend their fortunes on the public good.
Labour and Populism reject the outcome and want organisation and government action.
Students lose marks by blurring the middle two.
Keep them distinct: one is an argument about nature, the other is an argument about duty.
Workers organised.
The Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor differed over who to admit and what to demand, and that difference is examinable: the AFL concentrated on skilled workers and on practical gains in wages and hours.
Strikes were frequent and often very large, and they were frequently broken by state or federal force.
Notice what that does to the argument.
Once soldiers are used to end a strike, the question is no longer only about wages. It is about what government is for.
Migration also produced organised hostility: nativist movements argued that new arrivals threatened wages, culture, or self-government.
International and internal migration swelled the cities.
Name the shift precisely: arrivals came increasingly from southern and eastern Europe, alongside Chinese migration to the West, which met the Chinese Exclusion Act, the first significant federal restriction on immigration by nationality.
In cities where access to power was unequally distributed, political machines traded jobs, housing help and services for votes.
Here is the complexity mark.
Machines were corrupt by later standards and, for many migrants, the only functioning source of support.
Say both.
Politics and the Populist challenge close the period.
Politics, finally.
The major parties appealed to lingering Civil War divisions and competed over patronage more than policy, which produced close elections and very little legislation.
So economic instability drove agrarian activists to build their own: the People's Party, the Populists, demanding regulation of railroads, currency reform, and a graduated income tax.
Judge it correctly.
Populism failed as a party.
It succeeded at putting on the national agenda the idea that government should intervene in the economy, which is the argument Period 7 takes up and wins.
Two more strands the exam asks for.
Corporations' need for managers and for clerical workers expanded a new middle class with new patterns of consumption and leisure.
And cultural and intellectual movements both buttressed and challenged the social order — many women sought greater equality through voluntary organizations, and arguments about citizenship and race ran through all of it.
The period's reasoning skill is continuity and change, and the prompts almost always ask for both.
What changed is easy: where people lived and what they did for a living.
What stayed the same is where marks are won, so name a specific continuity rather than gesturing at one.
Racial exclusion and unequal distribution of wealth are the two safest, because both are documented before 1865 and after 1898.
A real AP task.
The 2025 long essay asked you to evaluate the extent to which economic changes influenced United States society after 1865.
A strong thesis names who was affected differently: economic change created an urban industrial working class and a salaried middle class, but benefits were distributed so unevenly that farmers and industrial workers organised against it.
Naming who lets an essay argue about extent rather than just describe growth.
Westward settlement also meant the Dawes Act, which divided communal land into plots and transferred the surplus to settlers.
The AFL concentrated on skilled workers and wages, while nativist movements argued new arrivals threatened wages and self-government.
Five things to carry out.
First, explain farmers with mechanisms: freight rates, credit, falling prices.
Second, keep the four Gilded Age responses distinct.
Third, name the shift to southern and eastern Europe and the Chinese Exclusion Act.
Fourth, machines were corruption and provision at once.
Fifth, Populism matters for the agenda it set, not for the elections it lost.
