Symbols and Attitude · Símbolos e Atitude
A symbol points back at whoever used it
- Symbols in a text and the way they are used may imply that a narrator, character or speaker has a particular attitude or perspective.
- So a symbol is not only about the idea it represents — it is evidence about the person who reached for it.
- This is the same double reading you learned for comparisons, applied to symbols.
A cracked cup may stand for loss; it may also tell us who keeps picking it up.

"The way they are used" is the operative phrase
- Two speakers can use the same symbol and imply opposite attitudes.
- One treats an inherited house as a duty; another treats it as proof of worth.
- So the attitude is in the handling, not in the object, and the handling is quotable.
"A maneira como são usados" é a frase-chave
- Dois falantes podem usar o mesmo símbolo e implicar atitudes opostas.
- Um trata uma casa herdada como um dever; outro a trata como prova de valor.
- Então a atitude está no manuseio, não no objeto, e o manuseio é citável.

Reading the handling
- Where is the symbol placed in the sentence — subject, object, an afterthought?
- Is it approached, avoided, described in detail, or mentioned and dropped?
- Each of those choices is evidence about the attitude, and each can be pointed at.
Lendo o manuseio
- Onde o símbolo está posicionado na frase — sujeito, objeto, um apêndice?
- É abordado, evitado, descrito em detalhe ou mencionado e descartado?
- Cada uma dessas escolhas é evidência sobre a atitude, e cada uma pode ser apontada.

Two speakers can use the same symbol and imply opposite attitudes. The CED's phrase is symbols and the way they are used, so the attitude lives in the handling — where the symbol sits, how much detail it gets, whether it is approached or avoided — not in the object itself.
Dois falantes podem usar o mesmo símbolo e implicar atitudes opostas. A frase do CED é símbolos e a maneira como são usados, então a atitude reside no manuseio — onde o símbolo está posicionado, quanto detalhe recebe, se é abordado ou evitado — não no objeto em si.

Compare two uses if the poem gives you two

- This is the strongest form the analysis can take, and it needs no outside claim at all.
Compare dois usos se o poema oferecer dois
- Um símbolo usado duas vezes pelo mesmo falante é uma comparação controlada.
- Qualquer coisa que tenha mudado entre os dois usos é uma mudança de atitude, evidenciada.

A symbol-attitude pass
- Name the symbol and the idea it represents.
- Describe how the speaker handles it: where it sits, how much detail, approached or avoided.
- Then name the attitude that handling implies — and if there are two uses, what changed.
Passagem para símbolo-atitude
- Nomeie o símbolo e a ideia que ele representa.
- Descreva como o falante o manipula: onde está posicionado, quanto detalhe, abordado ou evitado.

A casa aparece no primeiro verso como "a casa que minha mãe manteve" — um sujeito, dado em quatro linhas. No quinto verso, é "aquele lugar", um objeto, mencionado e descartado. Mesmo símbolo, e a mudança de nomear para não-nomear é toda a mudança na atitude do falante.
Symbols and the way they are used may imply that a speaker has a particular attitude or perspective. The attitude lives in the handling — placement, detail, approached or avoided — which is quotable. Two uses of one symbol form a controlled comparison: whatever changed is a change in attitude.
