Commentary from Memory · Comentário da Memória
The requirement does not soften
- A line of reasoning is the logical sequence of claims that work together to defend the thesis, communicated through commentary.
- None of that changes because the book is not on the desk.
- What changes is that your evidence is a described scene rather than a quotation — and it still needs the same two links.
Leaving the book at home does not exempt the argument from bringing a route map.
A vague reference to a scene is the memory equivalent of...
It could refer to several scenes and therefore proves none of them.
Describe a scene the way you would quote a line
- A vague reference — when he refuses her help — is the equivalent of a paraphrase.
- A precise one — he refuses at the funeral, in front of the solicitor, without looking at her — is the equivalent of a quotation.
- Detail is what makes a remembered scene function as evidence.
Select all · todos the links each paragraph still needs.
The second is the one open-question essays skip most often.
The two links still have to be written
- Evidence → claim: why does this scene support this claim rather than another?
- Claim → thesis: why does this claim advance the interpretation?
- Essays on the open question skip the second link more often than any other, because the argument feels obvious to the writer who knows the book.
Evidence, link, or vagueness? · Evidência, vínculo ou vaguidão?
Sort each sentence by its role in an open-question paragraph.
____ is what makes a remembered scene function as evidence.
The place, the witnesses, the gesture. · O lugar, as testemunhas, o gesto.
A vague reference is the memory equivalent of a paraphrase. When he refuses her help could be any of three scenes and proves none of them. Name the place, the witnesses, the gesture — the detail is what converts a memory into evidence a reader can weigh.
You should assume the reader has not read the work and summarise it for them.
Write as though they know the work but not your reading — one clause of context per scene.
The reader may not have read the book
- Write as though the reader knows the work but not your reading of it.
- That means naming who is who, briefly, without turning the essay into a summary.
- One clause of context per scene is usually enough — and it costs less than being incomprehensible.
Put the memory-commentary pass in order.
Context last, so it stays a clause rather than becoming a summary.
A memory-commentary pass
- For each scene: is it described precisely enough to work as evidence?
- Is there a sentence saying why it supports this claim?
- Is there a sentence saying why this claim advances the thesis?
Vague: he refuses her help. Precise: he refuses at the funeral, in front of the solicitor, without looking at her. Link to claim: the audience matters — the refusal is staged. Link to thesis: which is why being owed, and being seen to be owed, is the only position he can hold.
The requirement is unchanged: a line of reasoning communicated through commentary, with two links per paragraph. Describe a remembered scene as precisely as you would quote a line — vagueness is the memory equivalent of paraphrase — and never skip the claim → thesis link because the argument feels obvious to you.
