Every pronoun points somewhere
- An antecedent 先行词 is a word, phrase or clause that precedes its referent.
- Referents may be pronouns, nouns, phrases or clauses — not only it and she.
- Tracking what points to what is the most basic close reading there is, and poems break it deliberately.
If “it” has three possible owners, the pronoun has lost its name tag.
Todo pronome aponta para algum lugar
- Um antecedente 先行词 é uma palavra, frase ou oração que precede seu referente.
- Referentes podem ser pronomes, substantivos, frases ou orações — não apenas it e she.
- Rastrear o que aponta para o quê é a leitura atenta mais básica que existe, e os poemas quebram isso deliberadamente.
Se “it” tem três possíveis donos, o pronome perdeu sua etiqueta.
An antecedent is... · Um antecedente é...
And referents may be pronouns, nouns, phrases or clauses — not only it and · e she. · E referentes podem ser pronomes, substantivos, frases ou orações — não apenas ele e ela.
Ambiguity is a technique
- Referents are ambiguous if they can refer to more than one antecedent, which affects interpretation.
- In prose that is usually an error; in a poem it is usually a choice.
- When it could mean two things, the poem is holding both — say so, rather than picking one.
Ambiguidade é uma técnica
- Referentes são ambíguos se puderem se referir a mais de um antecedente, o que afeta a interpretação.
- Em prosa isso geralmente é um erro; em um poema, geralmente é uma escolha.
- Quando it pode significar duas coisas, o poema está mantendo ambas — diga isso, em vez de escolher uma.
In a poem, an ambiguous referent should be resolved by choosing the likelier meaning. · Em um poema, um referente ambíguo deve ser resolvido escolhendo o significado mais provável.
Ambiguity affects interpretation; the poem is holding both, so say so. · A ambiguidade afeta a interpretação; o poema mantém ambos, então diga isso.
Repetition
- Words or phrases may be repeated to emphasize ideas or associations.
- The second use of a word is never identical to the first: it now carries where it has been.
- So analyse a repetition by saying what happened to the word in between.
Repetição
- Palavras ou frases podem ser repetidas para enfatizar ideias ou associações.
- O segundo uso de uma palavra nunca é idêntico ao primeiro: agora ela carrega onde esteve.
- Então analise uma repetição dizendo o que aconteceu com a palavra no meio.
Which word-level device is at work? · Qual dispositivo de nível de palavra está em funcionamento?
Sort each observation by the device the CED names. · Classifique cada observação pelo dispositivo que o CED nomeia.
Analyse a repetition by saying what happened to the word in ____. · Analise uma repetição dizendo o que aconteceu com a palavra em ____.
The second use is never identical to the first — it carries where it has been. · O segundo uso nunca é idêntico ao primeiro — ele carrega onde esteve.
Noticing alliteration is not analysing it. The CED says alliteration emphasizes those words and their associations — so the analysis names which words the sound binds together and what they now share. "There is alliteration in line 4" earns nothing.
Notar aliteração não é analisá-la. O CED diz que aliteração enfatiza essas palavras e suas associações — então a análise nomeia quais palavras o som une e o que elas agora compartilham. "Há aliteração na linha 4" não ganha nota alguma.
Select all · todos the parts of an alliteration analysis. · Selecione todos as partes de uma análise de aliteração.
Syllable-counting is metrics, not an account of what the alliteration emphasizes. · Contar sílabas é métrica, não uma descrição do que a aliteração enfatiza.
Alliteration
- Alliteration 头韵 is the repetition of the same letter sound at the beginning of adjacent or nearby words.
- Its stated purpose is to emphasize those words and their associations or representations.
- So an analysis must name the words it binds — not merely note that a sound recurs.
Aliteração
- Aliteração 头韵 é a repetição do mesmo som de letra no início de palavras adjacentes ou próximas.
- Seu propósito declarado é enfatizar essas palavras e suas associações ou representações.
- Então uma análise deve nomear as palavras que ela une — não apenas notar que um som se repete.
Match each device to the question that analyses it. · Associe cada dispositivo à pergunta que o analisa.
Each question forces the analysis past merely spotting the device. · Cada pergunta força a análise a ir além de apenas identificar o dispositivo.
A word-level pass
- Trace every pronoun to its antecedent, and mark any that has two.
- Circle every repeated word and say what changed between uses.
- For alliteration, name the words bound together and what they now share.
Uma verificação nível palavra
- Rastreie cada pronome até seu antecedente e marque qualquer um que tenha dois.
- Circule todas as palavras repetidas e diga o que mudou entre os usos.
- Para aliteração, nomeie as palavras unidas e o que elas agora compartilham.
"the still, shut, sunless room" binds three words by sound. Analysis: the alliteration makes still, shut and sunless read as one property rather than three descriptions, so the room is not merely dark — it is a single closed condition the speaker cannot separate into parts.
"the still, shut, sunless room" une três palavras pelo som. Análise: a aliteração faz still, shut e sunless serem lidos como uma propriedade única em vez de três descrições, então o quarto não é apenas escuro — é uma condição fechada única que o falante não consegue separar em partes.
An antecedent precedes its referent; referents may be pronouns, nouns, phrases or clauses, and ambiguous ones affect interpretation — in a poem, usually on purpose. Repetition emphasizes ideas or associations. Alliteration repeats an initial sound to emphasize those words and their associations — so name the words it binds.
