New forms, alongside old variations

  • New forms of national culture developed in the United States alongside continued regional variations.
  • Alongside is the whole claim: the national and the regional are simultaneous, not sequential.
  • So the answer is never "a national culture replaced regional ones" — the CED says they coexisted.
