What the Revolution Changed at Home and Abroad
IntroducedAn expanded cultural role still had a boundary
- Compare two claims: women gained political importance through teaching republican values, and women gained equal access to public office.
- Republican motherhood supports the first claim, with its role centred within the family. It does not establish the second or mean all inequalities were abolished.
Awareness of inequality, and two demands
- During and after the American Revolution, an increased awareness of inequalities in society motivated some individuals and groups to call for the abolition of slavery and greater political democracy in the new state and national governments. Some individuals and groups — the CED does not claim a general movement, and the qualifier is deliberate.
- Two demands are named: abolition and greater political democracy, and they arise from the same awareness.
Select both demands that awareness of inequality produced.
From 'some individuals and groups' — a deliberate qualifier.
Republican motherhood
- In response to women's participation in the American Revolution, Enlightenment ideas, and women's appeals for expanded roles, an ideal of "republican motherhood" gained popularity. It called on women to teach republican values within the family and granted women a new importance in American political culture.
- Three causes and two effects — and the CED lists women's appeals among the causes, so this is not something simply granted.
Select all three causes of republican motherhood the CED names.
Women's appeals are listed among the causes.
An advance with a boundary inside it
- A new importance in American political culture is a real gain, and within the family is a real limit. The CED states both in one sentence and does not resolve the tension, so neither should an answer.
- A comparison should specify which participation, gain and restriction are similar, rather than assume an exact parallel.
A domestic demand, republican motherhood, or global reach?
Sort each effect of the Revolution.
The limit inside republican motherhood is that the role was...
A real gain and a real limit, in one sentence.
Republican motherhood was a gain with a boundary written into it. It granted women a new importance in American political culture and called on them to teach republican values within the family — the CED states both in one sentence and leaves the tension standing, so an answer should too.
Select all three places the CED says the ideals reverberated.
Plus 'inspiring future independence movements' beyond them.
And it travelled
- The American Revolution and the ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence reverberated in France, Haiti, and Latin America, inspiring future independence movements. Three destinations named, and inspiring future independence movements extends the effect beyond them.
- Reverberated describes an echo, not an export — the ideals arrived and were used locally, for local purposes.
'Reverberated' describes...
The authors do not control who picks the sentence up.
Two objectives, two scales
- 3.6 asks about the various ways the American Revolution affected society and the global impact of the American Revolution. Society: calls for abolition and democracy from some groups, and republican motherhood.
- Global: France, Haiti, Latin America, and future independence movements — and the CED's verb is describe for the second.
A revolution that says all men are created equal has handed a sentence to everyone who is not treated as equal. Its authors do not control who picks the sentence up, at home or three thousand miles away.
Carry the reasoning to a new case
- For a historical argument, identify an expansion and a surviving restriction.
- Connect the Revolution's ideals to demands by some groups without replacing some with everyone.
Match each statement to its role in the argument.
Separate demands, attained roles and unsupported consequences.
