A Thesis About What a Text Refuses

Handout

Absence can be the interpretation

  • A thesis expresses an interpretation and requires a defense through evidence and a line of reasoning.
  • An interpretation can be about something the text does not do: does not resolve, does not judge, does not explain.
  • The unusual part is the evidence — you have to prove an absence, which is harder than proving a presence.
