Catharsis and Unresolved Endings

Resolution has a name
- The resolution of the anticipation, suspense or central conflicts of a plot may be referred to as the moment of catharsis 宣泄 or emotional release.
- So catharsis is not a feeling the reader happens to have — it is the moment the built tension is let go.
- It can therefore be located: it is a place in the text, and you can quote it.
At catharsis, the pressure cooker finally lets off steam; show where the heat came from.
Catharsis is best described as...
So it is locatable: a place in the text you can quote.
A conflict can come from what is never shown
- Sometimes things not actually shown in a narrative, such as an unseen character or a preceding action, may be in conflict with or result in conflict for a character.
- So the opponent may be someone who never appears, or something that happened before page one.
- That is not a gap in the book — the CED names it as a real source of conflict.
Select all the unshown things the CED says can cause conflict.
The CED names exactly those two.
Some endings do not resolve
- Although most plots end in resolution of the central conflicts, some have unresolved endings, and the lack of resolution may contribute to interpretations of the text.
- So an unresolved ending is a legitimate design, and its lack of resolution is evidence.
- Do not treat it as a question you are expected to answer on the book's behalf.
An unresolved ending is a gap the essay should fill in.
The lack of resolution contributes to interpretations — say what the absence does.
An unresolved ending is a design, not a question you must answer. The CED says the lack of resolution may contribute to interpretations of the text — so the analysis says what the absence does, rather than supplying the ending the book declined to write.
Read an ending for the kind of closure it chose
Only one of three outcomes is resolution, and a text that refuses one is making a claim.
Find where a cathartic moment was structurally ____ and ask whether it arrived.
If it was withheld, the withholding is the effect.
Catharsis and non-resolution are opposites you can compare
- If a text builds anticipation and then withholds the release, the withholding is the effect.
- So find where a cathartic moment was structurally due and ask whether it arrived.
- The answer is a claim about the whole text, and it can be defended from two pages.
Put the ending pass in order.
The second step is where most texts with unresolved endings are analysed.
An ending pass
- Find where the built tension is released, and quote that moment — or show that it is not released.
- Check whether any conflict comes from something never shown.
- If the ending is unresolved, say what the lack of resolution contributes to the interpretation.
The novel builds twenty chapters toward whether he will speak to his brother. The last scene puts them in the same room and ends before either says anything. The release is structurally due and withheld — and that withholding is what makes the reader carry the conflict out of the book.
Catharsis is the moment the anticipation, suspense or central conflict is released — a locatable place in the text. Conflict can come from what is never shown (an unseen character, a preceding action). Some endings are unresolved, and the lack of resolution is evidence — say what the absence does.
