Significance within a broader context
- The first route: explain the significance or relevance of an interpretation within a broader context.
- The context must be one your reading actually touches — how texts work, how readers work, what a form can do.
- It must follow from what you proved, which is why it belongs at the end.
Test a closing significance by asking whether the same sentence could end a ____ essay.
If it could, it is a flourish and should be cut.
A relevant analogy
- The second route here: use relevant analogies to help an audience better understand an interpretation.
- The purpose is stated — to help the reader understand, not to impress.
- So the test is whether the analogy makes your point clearer in fewer words than explaining it would.

A closing sentence that would fit any poem is a flourish, not significance. The CED asks for the significance of an interpretation within a broader context — so it has to follow from the specific thing you proved, and the test is whether it could end somebody else's essay unchanged.

- Does my final sentence follow from evidence I actually presented?
- Could the same sentence end an essay about a different poem? If so, cut it.
- Does my analogy save words, or spend them?
Flourish: the poem reminds us of the enduring power of memory. Significance: because the ambiguity is never resolved, the poem shows that a life can be accurately described only in a word that means two opposite things — which is a claim about language, not about this speaker alone.
Commentary is the floor; sophistication sits on top. Significance within a broader context must follow from what you actually proved — test it by asking whether the sentence could end a different essay. A relevant analogy must help the reader understand; if it needs explaining, it cost more than it gave.
