Lines That Do Not Stop

Handout

An idea can run past its line

  • Ideas and images in a poem may extend beyond a single line or stanza.
  • So the line is a unit of rhythm, not of meaning, and the two often disagree on purpose.
  • Reading a poem line by line, stopping at each end, produces a different poem from the one written.
