Colour, layered
- Colour enters drawing through dry colour media 干性彩色媒介 — fully allowed in the Drawing portfolio.
- Colored pencil 彩色铅笔 builds colour in transparent layers.
- Burnishing 压光 — a heavy final layer — fuses the layers glossy and solid.
A heavy final layer that fuses colored-pencil layers glossy and solid is called ____.
Burnishing fuses the layers.
Soft and oil pastel
- Soft pastel 软色粉 is almost pure pigment — paint-like colour with drawing gestures.
- Oil pastel 油画棒 is creamy and smudge-resistant; layered, it scratches through (sgraffito 刮画法).
- Toned paper unifies pastel work — let the ground breathe between strokes.
Colour-media move: smart or mistake?
Sort each move as sound colour practice or a common mistake.
The best way to darken a colour is to add black.
Layer the complement instead — black deadens the colour.
Select all dry colour media allowed in the Drawing portfolio.
Casting is not a dry drawing medium.
Value still rules
- Grey a colour by layering its complement 互补色, not by adding black — shadows stay alive.
- Get the values right and almost any hue works; get them wrong and no hue can save it.
- Colour is a drawing decision — say why you chose it in your written evidence.
Soft pastel is almost pure ____.
That is why it reads as painterly colour.
Match the medium to its trait.
Three dry colour media.
Reaching for black to darken a colour deadens it — the shadow turns grey and muddy. Darken with the colour's complement or a deeper related hue instead, and the colour keeps its life.
A red apple in colored pencil: layer red, then deepen the shadow with green (its complement) instead of black; burnish the highlight side smooth; leave the toned paper as the mid-value. The apple glows instead of going grey.
Dry colour media are portfolio-legal: colored pencil layers and burnishes; soft/oil pastel is pure pigment; darken with the complement not black — and value still rules over hue.
