Light against dark
- Chiaroscuro 明暗对照法 ("light-dark") uses strong value contrast for drama.
- It is the language of Caravaggio and Rembrandt: one strong light, deep surrounding shadow.
- The lit subject leaps forward; the mood arrives with the darkness.
Chiaroscuro or not?
Sort each setup by whether it is chiaroscuro thinking.
Extreme chiaroscuro, where most of the image sinks into darkness, is called ____.
Tenebrism = extreme chiaroscuro.
Tenebrism and the focal point
- Tenebrism 暗色调主义 is extreme chiaroscuro: most of the image sinks into darkness, one area blazes.
- Reserve the strongest contrast for the focal point 视觉焦点 — contrast attracts the eye first.
- Everything else stays quieter on purpose.
The strongest value contrast should sit at the focal point.
Contrast attracts the eye first.
Match the artist or idea to its description.

Media that love the dark
- Charcoal and ink wash reach rich, deep darks quickly — natural chiaroscuro tools.
- Toned paper 有色纸 with black and white media makes the light logic explicit.
- High-contrast studies photograph impressively — strong Selected Works candidates.
Chiaroscuro literally means "____-dark".
Chiaro (light) + scuro (dark).
Select all tools that reach deep darks quickly.
Hard 4H graphite stays pale.
Chiaroscuro is not "make everything dark". Without a full value bridge — lights, halftones, controlled darks — high contrast collapses into a black blob with a white hole.
Set a lamp low beside a friend's face in a dark room. Half the face blazes, half disappears; the eye socket becomes a cave. Draw thirty minutes in compressed charcoal — instant Rembrandt lesson.
Chiaroscuro = drama through value contrast; tenebrism pushes it to extremes; give the focal point the strongest contrast, and use charcoal, wash, or toned paper to reach the darks fast.
