Look at this room.
Almost all of it is dark.
One small light is hidden behind the boy in the middle, and it is the only light in the picture.
Yet you can still read every face and every hand.
Nothing here is outlined: the picture is built from light shapes against dark ones.
A drawing can do the same with almost nothing.
Brown ink, a pen, and a few washes of that same brown.
One colour, one brush, and the room still turns from light into deep shadow.
So how do you learn to see like that?
You start with a scale.
This is Topic Two: value, light, and form.
How light falls on things, how you copy that with a pencil, and why it decides your portfolio score.
Value means lightness and darkness. Nothing else.
A value scale runs from white, through the greys, down to black, and drawing a smooth nine-step scale is the classic control exercise.
Now watch the two shapes.
Both are circles.
The left one has a single value, so it stays a flat disc.
The right one is given four values, and it becomes a ball.
Four words you must use exactly.
The value scale is the ladder itself: white at the top, black at the bottom, nine steps between.
A high-key drawing lives near the light end and feels airy; a low-key drawing lives near the dark end and feels heavy.
Local value is the object's own lightness — a black mug stays dark even in bright light.
And squint at your subject: squinting throws away detail and shows the big value shapes.
Now the mistake that costs marks.
Most beginners draw everything in the middle of the scale — timid greys, nothing truly dark, nothing truly bright.
From across the room that drawing looks flat, and scorers see it constantly.
So push your darks.
Put a real black near a real white in every piece.
A confident full value range is a score signal — what separates a strong portfolio from a weak one.
One light source makes the same pattern on every object.
Learn the pattern once and you can draw anything.
The highlight is where the light hits square on.
Next comes the mid-tone, the surface's true value.
Then the core shadow: the darkest band on the form, where the surface turns fully away.
Below it, reflected light bounces up from the table.
And on the ground lies the cast shadow.
Now the mistake almost everyone makes.
Beginners put the darkest tone right at the outside edge, like an outline, and the ball goes flat.
Here is what really happens.
The darkest band sits just inside the edge — that band is the core shadow.
The rim itself is lighter again, because light bounces off the table.
And here is the rule scorers look for: reflected light is never lighter than a lit halftone.
One line to remember first: reflected light is always darker than any lit halftone.
Now the cast shadow.
It is darkest and sharpest where it touches the object, then softer and lighter as it stretches away — draw it that way and the object sits on the table.
And the edges tell you the shape: a hard edge means a sharp turn, a soft edge means a slow turn.
Rendering means building believable volume, and three habits do most of the work.
Simplify: every complex subject reduces to basic forms — spheres, cylinders, cubes and cones, so render those first.
Work in one direction, dark to light — jumping around destroys the value structure.
And blend on purpose with a blending stump: marks you keep often read stronger than a surface you have rubbed smooth.
Above all, keep the lit side and the shadow side apart.
Look at how the old masters actually built their values.
Dürer's hands are made of fine parallel lines, and where the lines crowd together and cross, the tone deepens.
Michelangelo's study is the same: almost no blending, just marks laid at the right density.
Value and mark-making are one skill.
Chiaroscuro means light-dark: one strong light against deep shadow, so the subject steps forward out of the page.
Seurat drew this man with a conté crayon on rough paper, and there is almost no outline in it.
The hat is a solid dark mass.
The profile appears only where a light edge meets that dark.
The coat sinks away below.
Push this further, until one small area blazes in darkness, and it has a name: tenebrism.
Before any of that, plan.
Thumbnail sketches let you test value plans in minutes.
Notan is the design of the light and dark shapes: a drawing works or fails at thumbnail size, before any detail exists.
Squint, and reduce your scene to two or three flat values.
On the left the darks are connected into one linked shape, and it reads instantly.
On the right the same dark is scattered into spots, and it reads as noise.
So group your values, and put your darkest dark against your lightest light at the focal point.
Here is a different way to start.
Cover the whole sheet with an even grey tone — a toned ground.
Now you can draw in two directions.
Press darker with the charcoal to build the shadows.
Then lift the lights back out with an eraser: a kneaded eraser dabs soft lights, a hard eraser cuts crisp ones.
That is subtractive drawing: the eraser has become a drawing tool.
This process is visible experimentation with materials.
And because you begin in the middle of the scale, nothing can hide behind white paper.
Include one white-object study in your practice images.
Let's plan one all the way through.
Three white eggs and a folded white cloth, with one lamp from the upper left.
Step one: squint, and find the three big shapes — the lit cloth, the shadow side of the eggs, and the cast shadows they throw.
Step two: draw a thumbnail, five centimetres wide, and connect those cast shadows into one linked dark shape.
Step three: fix the values before you touch the big sheet.
The lit cloth is a two.
The shadow side of the eggs is a six.
The cast shadows are an eight — your darkest dark, sitting right beside your lightest light, so that junction becomes the focal point.
Step four: render dark to light, and never let a halftone creep into the shadow side.
And why does this study score?
The objects are white, so every value on the page came from light alone.
Three things scorers notice.
One: the full value range.
Weak portfolios are grey on grey, so put a real black and a real white in every piece.
Two: reflected light.
If it glows brighter than your lit halftones, the form collapses.
Three: photograph dark drawings carefully.
Charcoal blacks crush to a flat mush in bad light, so check the range on screen before you submit.
