A Thesis About What a Text Refuses · Une thèse sur ce qu'un texte refuse
Absence can be the interpretation
- A thesis expresses an interpretation and requires a defense through evidence and a line of reasoning.
- An interpretation can be about something the text does not do: does not resolve, does not judge, does not explain.
- The unusual part is the evidence — you have to prove an absence, which is harder than proving a presence.
An unanswered question can be evidence; “the book forgot” is not yet an interpretation.
You prove an absence by quoting... · Vous prouvez une absence en citant...
You cannot quote something that is not there.
Prove an absence by showing the expectation
- You cannot quote something that is not there, so quote what created the expectation instead.
- Twenty chapters building toward a confrontation is the evidence that the missing confrontation is a choice.
- Absence is provable only against a pattern the text itself established.
A refusal thesis must say what the refusal ____, not just that it happens.
The clause after so that is the part you defend.
Name what the refusal accomplishes
- The novel does not resolve the conflict is an observation about the last chapter.
- The novel refuses to resolve the conflict so that the reader must decide what was owed is a thesis.
- The clause after so that is the part you defend, exactly as with an ambiguity thesis.
Is this a defensible refusal claim? · Est-ce une affirmation de refus défendable ?
Sort each claim by whether the text built the expectation.
Anything a text does not do can be called a refusal.
A refusal needs the text to have raised the expectation itself.
An absence is only a refusal if the text raised the expectation itself. A novel that never discusses a topic it never touched is not refusing anything — you would be describing what the book is not about. Quote the passages that built the expectation, or the thesis has no evidence at all.
Match each version to its verdict. · Reliez chaque version à son verdict.
Only the third has an expectation the text itself built.
Do not overclaim a refusal
- Some things a text does not do are simply outside its scope, not refusals.
- A refusal needs the text to have raised the expectation itself — otherwise you are describing what the book is not about.
- So the test is always: did this text make me expect that?

Fame is not evidence. · La célébrité n'est pas une preuve.
A refusal-thesis check
- Can I quote the passages that built the expectation?
- Does my thesis say what the refusal accomplishes, not just that it happens?
- Did the text itself raise this expectation, or did I bring it?
Thesis: the novel withholds the confrontation it spent twenty chapters preparing, so that the reader is left holding a grievance the characters never have to settle. Evidence: three passages that build toward the meeting, and the final scene that ends before either brother speaks.
An interpretation can be about what a text does not do — but an absence is provable only against an expectation the text itself built, so quote the passages that built it. Say what the refusal accomplishes, not just that it happens, and check the expectation was the text's and not yours.
