One racing heart, different interpretations
- A student notices a racing heart before a performance and during a dark walk. The observation alone does not identify one certain emotion
- Emotion can involve bodily changes, expression and subjective feeling. Context and appraisal can help explain the reported feeling.
Which are the three components of an emotion? Choose all that apply.
These are introductory components of emotion. Theoretical accounts propose different relations among arousal, appraisal and feeling.
Compare proposed mechanisms
- One account links feeling to interpreting bodily changes; another proposes bodily change and feeling together. A cognitive interpretation account considers bodily arousal in its situation.
- These are theoretical accounts, not an instruction that every emotion follows one simple sequence. Match the requested account to its proposed mechanism.
Describe tendencies without fixing behaviour
- Personality 人格 concerns relatively lasting patterns. Trait theories 特质理论 describe dimensions, while learning approaches 学习取向 examine experience and consequences.
- A sociable person can be quiet at a funeral. One observation neither establishes nor disproves a broad tendency; behaviour also depends on the situation.
The same racing heart feels like fear in a dark corridor and excitement at a concert. Which account explains that best?
This contrast illustrates an interpretation account. An everyday example does not prove that the complete physiological states are identical.
Explain rather than rename
- “Aggressive because he has an aggressive personality” supplies a label without a mechanism. Describe a proposed experience or process and what evidence would support it.
- An earlier unpleasant conversation might contribute to later avoidance. This is a possible learning account, not a diagnosis from one behaviour.
A sociable person being quiet at a funeral disproves that they are sociable.
A trait is a tendency across many situations, not a prediction about any single one.
In one sentence, explain how a learning approach would account for a person's shyness.
Example: "Earlier attempts to join conversations went badly, so the behaviour that avoided them was reinforced."
A student is quiet during one difficult group meeting. What does this establish?
The observation supports a situation-specific description. A lasting trait needs evidence across relevant situations and time.
Check the limit of the example
- Similar heart rates do not prove that all bodily activity is identical. An everyday contrast can illustrate an appraisal account without experimentally proving it.
- Keep observation, proposed explanation and evidence separate. Do not infer a permanent personality from a single feeling.
Keep observation, proposed explanation and evidence separate. Do not infer a permanent personality from a single feeling.
Why is "he is aggressive because he has an aggressive personality" a weak answer?
Restating a behavioural label supplies no mechanism or independent causal evidence.
