Synthesize different sources into an academic paragraph · Sintetizar diferentes fuentes en un párrafo académico
Two summaries are not automatically synthesis
- One source discusses access to a digital museum guide; another discusses label wording. A draft describes each in a separate block without connecting them. The reader still needs to know how their ideas answer the same research question.
- This GAC008-aligned lesson practises synthesis: bringing relevant ideas together while preserving their differences. All three cards below are invented teaching material. They illustrate reasoning and must be replaced by verified real sources in research coursework.
Ask a question that the sources can answer
- Use the focused question: “What should a small museum consider when improving visitor information?” This allows both access and clarity to matter. “Does technology always improve learning?” is too broad for these cards and invites an unjustified universal answer.
- Read each card for its claim, evidence and limit. Card A concerns practical access to one guide; B concerns wording in a different trial; C describes staffing. They do not measure the same outcome or directly compare paper and digital learning.
Card A: In a fictional gallery pilot, twelve of twenty visitors opened the phone guide. Four of the eight who did not open it reported difficulty connecting to the network. Other non-users gave different reasons.
Card B: In a separate fictional label trial, visitors asked fewer clarification questions after shorter labels were introduced. The groups visited on different days, so the wording change was not the only possible difference.
Card C: An invented planning note says the small museum can update printed labels monthly, while its phone guide needs a staff member to check broken links each week.

Which question is answerable using these cards? · ¿Cuál pregunta puede responderse usando estas tarjetas?
The cards address access, clarity and maintenance in small-museum practice, not universal or international rankings.
How many guide non-users did NOT report network difficulty?
Eight did not open the guide; four reported network difficulty, leaving four with other reasons.
Build a theme matrix before writing
- Put sources into rows and themes into columns: access, clarity and maintenance. A blank cell means that source gives no information about that theme. Do not fill it with an attractive guess merely to make the table look complete.
- Connect A and B through the visitor's ability to use information, then add C's maintenance condition. Preserve their different evidence: phone access, clarification questions and a staffing note are not interchangeable learning scores.
| Source | Useful contribution | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| A | Some non-users reported a network barrier | Not every non-user reported that reason |
| B | Fewer questions followed shorter labels | Different-day groups; cause not isolated |
| C | Different update tasks need staff time | A planning note, not outcome evidence |
What should a blank theme-matrix cell mean?
Absence of relevant evidence is not a licence to invent or proof of contradiction.
Organise by an idea, not by source order
- Start with your bounded answer, then place related evidence around it. “Visitor information needs usable access, clear wording and a realistic maintenance plan” links the cards. It does not declare that one medium is always better.
- Attribute each borrowed idea and explain the relationship. Words such as similarly require a real similarity; in contrast requires a real difference. Here “while” can connect access and clarity as different considerations without pretending both trials measured the same thing.
The fictional cards suggest three considerations for visitor information. Card A identifies a network barrier for some guide non-users, while card B suggests shorter wording may help clarity, although its groups differed. Card C adds that keeping either format useful requires staff time. Together, the cards support reviewing access, wording and maintenance, rather than assuming that a digital format alone solves the problem.
Do not average twelve guide users with an unreported clarification count. Synthesis joins ideas; it does not combine incompatible quantities or hide the limits of individual sources.

Research with a traceable source trail
- For a real assignment, select a focused question, search useful terms, inspect the original sources and record author, title, date, locator and link. Verify that each source actually supports the claim you plan to use rather than trusting a search snippet.
- Make a real theme matrix with relevant sources and evidence limits. Prefer directly relevant evidence over a famous but unrelated author. If sources disagree, explain their methods or contexts before choosing a conclusion; do not silently remove the inconvenient one.
Draft, trace and revise
- Write a 120-word paragraph using the fictional cards and explicit card labels. Include one connecting claim, contributions from at least two cards, and a limitation. Follow it with one realistic recommendation, framed as something to check rather than a proven solution.
- Trace every borrowed statement back to its card. Ask whether you preserved scope and connected ideas rather than stacking summaries. For coursework, replace the fictional cards with real evidence and use the required references before submitting.
Synthesis answers one focused question by connecting relevant evidence, keeping source differences and limits visible, and tracing borrowed ideas accurately.
Borraje, rastree y revise
Which TWO features distinguish useful synthesis? · ¿CUÁLES DOS características distinguen una síntesis útil?
A connecting argument and traceability preserve meaning; hiding limits and mixing quantities undermine it.
