Report a health-science talk without overstating its claims · Informar sobre una charla de ciencias de la salud sin exagerar sus afirmaciones
“Associated with” is not “caused by”
- A fictional student seminar reports a survey about sleep diaries and a classroom concentration task. The speaker describes an association and then limits it. A summary that removes the limitation would communicate a different claim.
- This original GAC007-aligned language lesson uses invented research data to practise listening notes and cautious summaries. It is not health advice or evidence from a real clinical study. Printed-script checks and partner rehearsal do not replace reviewed recorded listening practice.
Listen for the claim and its qualification
- Before a partner reads, make three note headings: finding, method, limitation. Words such as in this group, however and does not show tell you the scope of a claim. Keep them attached to the finding instead of treating them as optional detail.
- Compare your notes with this script after the rehearsal. The numbers belong to a fictional teaching example. Do not quote them elsewhere as published health findings or infer an individual student's needs from a group result.
Our small survey involved thirty volunteers who kept a sleep diary and completed one concentration task. In this group, those reporting more regular sleep times tended to score higher. However, the survey did not assign sleep patterns or control all other differences. Students differed in workload and familiarity with the task. The diary was self-reported, so its accuracy could vary. We can describe an association in these records, but we cannot say regular sleep times alone caused the higher scores. We would need a more suitable design to investigate causes, and this single task is not a diagnosis of anyone's health.

How many volunteers are described in the fictional script?
The script states thirty volunteers. These are invented teaching data, not a real health finding.
Keep method separate from interpretation
- The method is a diary and one task with thirty volunteers. The reported pattern is higher scores among those reporting more regular times. The interpretation is limited because patterns were not assigned and other differences remained. Those are three different note categories.
- Self-reported means participants supplied the diary information themselves. It does not mean every entry was false; it means the account's accuracy is a consideration. Do not strengthen a cautious concern into an accusation against participants.
Notes: 30 volunteers → diary + 1 task; regular reported times ↔ higher scores in group; no assigned patterns; workload/familiarity differ; diary accuracy variable; association, not cause or diagnosis.
What does self-reported mean in the script? · ¿Qué significa «autoinformado» en el guion?
Self-report describes the source of the information. Accuracy may vary, but universal dishonesty is not established.
Summarise with the same level of certainty
- A fair two-sentence summary states the group pattern and a major limitation: “In a fictional survey of thirty volunteers, more regular reported sleep times were associated with higher scores on one task. Other differences and self-reporting prevent the survey from establishing a causal effect.”
- Avoid “regular sleep guarantees concentration” or “the diary is useless.” Neither follows from the script. A small study can describe a pattern under its conditions without establishing a universal rule or being dismissed completely.
When you hear a caveat after “however,” do not leave it out because the earlier claim is easier to remember. The caveat may determine what the evidence can support.
The survey proves that regular sleep times alone caused higher concentration scores.
Patterns were not assigned and workload and familiarity differed. The script permits association, not that causal claim.
Which TWO limits should a summary retain? · ¿Cuáles DOS límites debe retener un resumen?
The stated limits concern other differences and self-report accuracy. Diagnosis and universal representation are explicitly unsupported.
Ask a method question rather than demand certainty
- Ask, “How did you check the diary entries?” or “Did both groups have similar familiarity with the task?” These questions examine a stated limitation. “Which sleep schedule cures every problem?” assumes a result the survey never investigated.
- In a discussion, acknowledge the observation before qualifying it: “The pattern is interesting, but the workload difference could matter. Could a later comparison record that more carefully?” This encourages investigation without pretending the cause is known.
Which question best follows the talk’s stated limits?
The question examines information quality without assuming a cure or dishonesty.
Give a short evidence-respecting report
- Prepare a 45-second report with the finding, method, two limitations and one suitable question. A partner checks whether you used associated, in this group or equivalent cautious language. Do not attach clinical advice to an invented classroom example.
- Repeat the report using only five note phrases. If the listener hears a stronger claim than the speaker made, revise your wording. Accurate selection and qualification are part of communication, not signs that you lack confidence.
Retain the population, method and qualification when summarising a scientific talk. An association in a limited survey is not proof of a cause or a personal diagnosis.
Un compañero verifica si has utilizado associated, in this group o lenguaje equivalente cauteloso.
