Different readers, different readings
- Ambiguity 歧义 allows for different readings and understandings of a text by different readers.
- The CED's definition is about readers, not about vagueness in the text.
- So ambiguity is a property of what a phrase makes possible, not a failure to be clear.
Two readers may disagree about an ambiguous line and both bring evidence; the line is not the referee.
Diferentes lectores, diferentes lecturas
- Ambigüedad 歧义 permite distintas lecturas y comprensiones de un texto por parte de diferentes lectores.
- La definición del CED se refiere a los lectores, no a la imprecisión en el texto.
- Por lo tanto, la ambigüedad es una propiedad de lo que una frase posibilita, no de una falta de claridad.
Dos lectores pueden estar en desacuerdo sobre una línea ambigua y ambos aportan evidencia; la línea no actúa como árbitro.

Hold both readings
- When a phrase supports two readings, an essay that picks one has thrown away half the evidence.
- State both, show the text supports both, and then say what holding both does.
- That is a stronger answer than either reading alone, and it takes no more words.
Mantener ambas lecturas
- Cuando una frase admite dos interpretaciones, un ensayo que elige solo una descarta la mitad de la evidencia.
- Plantea ambas, demuestra que el texto las respalda y, a continuación, explica qué aporta mantenerlas simultáneamente.
- Esa es una respuesta más sólida que cualquiera de las lecturas por separado, y no requiere más palabras.
When a phrase supports two readings, choose the likelier one. · Cuando una frase soporta dos lecturas, elija la más probable.
Picking one throws away half the evidence; state both and say what holding both does. · Elegir una descarta la mitad de la evidencia; enuncie ambas y diga qué sostiene tener ambas.
Ambiguity is local, not general
- The poem is ambiguous is not a claim; it describes a feeling.
- Ambiguity lives in a specific word, phrase or line, and the analysis quotes it.
- One ambiguous phrase, fully worked, is worth more than a paragraph about the poem's mystery.
La ambigüedad es local, no general
- El poema es ambiguo no es una afirmación; describe una sensación.
- La ambigüedad reside en una palabra, frase o línea específica, y el análisis la cita.
- Una sola frase ambigua, debidamente analizada, vale más que un párrafo sobre el misterio del poema.

Ambiguity lives in a specific word, phrase or line — so the analysis ____ it. · La ambigüedad reside en una palabra, frase o verso específico — así el análisis ____ eso.
"The poem is ambiguous" describes a feeling, not the text. · "El poema es ambiguo" describe una sensación, no el texto.
"The poem is ambiguous" describes a feeling, not the text. Ambiguity lives in a specific word, phrase or line — quote it, state both readings it permits, and show the text supporting each. One phrase fully worked beats a paragraph about mystery.
"El poema es ambiguo" describe una sensación, no el texto. La ambigüedad vive en una palabra, frase o línea específica —cítala, expón las dos lecturas que permite y muestra cómo el texto respalda cada una—. Una frase plenamente trabajada supera a un párrafo sobre el misterio.
Match each reading of "she kept the house" to what it makes her. · Empareje cada lectura de "ella mantenía la casa" con lo que esto la convierte.
The refusal is what the essay is actually about. · La negativa es de lo que trata realmente el ensayo.
Different readers is a real claim
- Because the CED locates ambiguity in different readers, you may legitimately say who would read it each way.
- A reader who has been left and a reader who has left would take the same line in opposite senses.
- That is not speculation about people — it is a statement about what the line permits.
"Diferentes lectores" es una afirmación real
- Dado que el CED sitúa la ambigüedad en diferentes lectores, puedes indicar legítimamente quién la leería de cada manera.
- Un lector al que se ha dejado y un lector que se ha ido interpretarían esa misma línea en sentidos opuestos.
- No se trata de especular sobre personas —es una afirmación sobre lo que la línea posibilita.

An ambiguity pass
- Quote the specific word or phrase that carries two senses.
- State both readings and show the line supports each.
- Then say what the poem gains by not choosing.
Puntos clave sobre la ambigüedad
- Cita la palabra o frase específica que porta dos sentidos.
- Plantea ambas lecturas y demuestra que la línea las respalda.
- A continuación, explica qué gana el poema al no elegir.
She kept the house. One reader hears an achievement — she held on to it. Another hears an obligation — she was kept there by it. The poem gives both a preceding line, refuses to choose, and the refusal is what makes her position unbearable to describe in one word.
Ella mantenía la casa. Un lector percibe un logro —ella aguantó—. Otro percibe una obligación —ella fue retenida allí por ella—. El poema ofrece una línea anterior para cada interpretación, se niega a elegir, y esa negación es lo que hace insoportable describir su posición en una sola palabra.
Ambiguity allows different readings by different readers — it is a property of what a phrase makes possible, not vagueness. Hold both readings rather than picking one, keep the claim local to a quoted phrase, and say what the poem gains by not choosing.
La ambigüedad permite distintas lecturas por parte de diferentes lectores —es una propiedad de lo que una frase posibilita, no vaguedad—. Mantén ambas lecturas en lugar de elegir una, mantén la afirmación local a una frase citada, y explica qué gana el poema al no elegir.
