What Makes an Argument Sophisticated · Qué hace que un argumento sea sofisticado
The CED names three routes, and only three
- More sophisticated literary arguments may explain the significance or relevance of an interpretation within a broader context, discuss alternative interpretations of a text, or use relevant analogies to help an audience better understand an interpretation.
- That is the whole list, and every item is a thing you do, not a quality you have.
- So sophistication is a move, and it can be planned.
Sophistication is not a fancy hat for a thin essay; the argument needs a head beneath it.
Select all · todos the sophistication routes the CED names.
All three are things a writer does · hace; vocabulary is not one of them.
Significance within a broader context
- Ask why this reading matters beyond the pages it comes from.
- Not "this is still true today" — but what the interpretation shows about how texts, or people, work.
- One sentence at the end of a paragraph is enough, and it must follow from what you proved.
The safest of the three moves is...
The text itself supplies the material for it.
Discuss alternative interpretations
- The safest of the three, because the text supplies the material.
- Name a reading the evidence also permits, then say why yours accounts for more of it.
- This is the literary version of concede-then-turn, and it earns credibility the same way.
Discutir interpretaciones alternativas
An analogy that needs explaining still counts as sophistication.
The CED's word is relevant — if it needs explaining, it cost more than it gave.
Sophistication is a move, not a register. The CED lists three things a writer does — broader significance, alternative interpretations, relevant analogies. Longer sentences and bigger words are none of them, and an essay that reaches for tone instead of one of these three has spent effort for nothing.
Which sophistication move is this — or none?
Sort each sentence by the CED's three routes.
The alternative-interpretation move belongs ____, once your reading is established.
Conceding before your reading is established reads as uncertainty, not judgement.
Use a relevant analogy
- The CED's word is relevant, and it is the risky one of the three.
- An analogy must clarify the interpretation for a reader, not decorate it.
- If the analogy needs explaining, it has cost more than it gave.
Match each move to what makes it work.
Each has a condition; failing the condition makes the move a liability.
Planning the sophistication move
- Decide before you write which of the three you will use, and where.
- The alternative-interpretation move belongs late, once your reading is established.
- The broader-significance move belongs in the last paragraph, and it must follow from your evidence.
Alternative interpretation, done in two sentences: The same silences can be read as the narrator's tact rather than his evasion, and the funeral scene supports that reading. But tact would not require him to change the subject when nobody has raised it — which the evasion reading explains and the tact reading does not.
Sophistication is one of three named moves: explain the interpretation's significance in a broader context, discuss alternative interpretations, or use a relevant analogy. All three are things you do, so plan which and where. The alternative-interpretation move is the safest, because the text supplies the material.
