What Pacing Does to a Reader · Qué hace el ritmo en un lector
Pacing can produce feeling
- Narrative pacing may evoke an emotional reaction in readers.
- The CED then names exactly three sources of that reaction, and they are all structural.
- So an emotional response is analysable here — you can show where it was manufactured.
A rushed ending can make a reader feel as though they missed a stair on the way down.
Select all · todos the sources of pacing's emotional effect the CED names.
All three are structural, which is why the reaction is analysable.
The order in which information is revealed
- Same facts, different order, different feeling.
- A death told before its cause reads as grief; told after, it reads as inevitability.
- So order is the first source, and it is always quotable — you can point at both positions.
The force of a late revelation depends mainly on...
A tiny fact that reorganises everything hits harder than a dramatic one that touches nothing.
Relationships between information and when it is given
- The second source is the relationships between the information, when it is provided, and other parts of the narrative.
- So a fact given early sits beside everything that follows; the same fact given late sits beside almost nothing.
- Placement changes what a piece of information is allowed to touch.
Which source of emotional reaction is this? · ¿Cuál es esta fuente de reacción emocional?
Sort each observation by the CED's three sources.
Telling a death before its cause produces the same effect as telling it after.
One reads as grief and the other as inevitability — same facts, different order.
The force of a revelation depends on its reach, not its size. The CED's third source is the significance of the revealed information to other parts of the narrative — so a small fact that reorganises everything before it hits harder than a dramatic one that touches nothing.
And how much the information matters
- The third source is the significance of the revealed information to other parts of the narrative.
- A small fact revealed late can reorganise a whole story; a large one revealed late may change nothing.
- So the emotional force depends on reach, not on size.
Test a revelation by asking what would change if it came ten pages ____.
The difference between the two versions is the pacing effect.
Put the revelation pass in order. · Ordene el pasaje de la revelación.
Naming the source is what turns a feeling into an analysis.
A revelation pass
- Find one important piece of information and note exactly where it is revealed.
- Ask what would change if it came ten pages earlier.
- Then name the reaction the actual placement produces, and which of the three sources produced it.
On the last page we learn the letter was never posted. The fact is tiny. But it reaches back through every scene where she waited for a reply, and each of those scenes now means something else — which is why the ending is devastating rather than merely sad.
