Literal and Figurative · Literal y figurado
The distinction is a starting point, not an answer
- The objective is to distinguish between the literal and figurative meanings of words and phrases.
- Distinguishing is the skill; deciding which one applies is often not the point.
- In poetry both frequently apply at once, and that is where the analysis lives.
In a poem, “cold” may report the weather and the welcome at the same time.
La distinción es un punto de partida, no una respuesta
- El objetivo es distinguir entre los significados literales y figurados de las palabras y frases.
- Distinguir es la habilidad; decidir cuál aplica a menudo no es el punto principal.
- En la poesía ambos suelen aplicarse simultáneamente, y ahí reside el análisis.
En un poema, “frío” puede reportar tanto el clima como la acogida al mismo tiempo.
Multiple meanings add complexity
- Words with multiple meanings or connotations add nuance or complexity that can contribute to interpretations of a text.
- So a word that could mean two things is not a problem to solve.
- It is a resource, and the poem usually put it there deliberately.
Múltiples significados añaden complejidad
- Las palabras con múltiples significados o connotaciones añaden matices o complejidad que pueden contribuir a las interpretaciones de un texto.
- Por lo tanto, una palabra que podría tener dos sentidos no es un problema para resolver.
- Es un recurso, y el poeta suele colocarla allí deliberadamente.

The poem usually put it there deliberately. · El poema lo suele colocar ahí deliberadamente.
Denotation and connotation
- A word's literal meaning is what it denotes; its connotations are what it brings with it.
- Slender and scrawny denote nearly the same thing and connote opposite judgements.
- The CED's phrase is meanings or connotations — both count as evidence.
Denotación y connotación
- El significado literal de una palabra es lo que denota; sus connotaciones son lo que trae consigo.
- Esbelto y delgaducho denotan casi lo mismo pero connotan juicios opuestos.
- La frase del CED es significados o connotaciones —ambos cuentan como evidencia.

Do not leap over the literal. A line often has a plain sense that is doing real work, and a symbolic reading that ignores it is usually weaker, not deeper. Establish what the words denote first; the figurative reading is strongest when it sits on top of the literal one.
No saltes por encima del sentido literal. Una línea suele tener un sentido plano que cumple una función real, y una lectura simbólica que lo ignora suele ser más débil, no más profunda. Establece primero lo que las palabras denotan; la lectura figurada es más fuerte cuando se asienta sobre la literal.
Before reading a phrase figuratively, say what it means ____. · Antes de leer una frase figurativamente, di qué significa ____.
The figurative reading is strongest built on top of the literal one. · La lectura figurada se construye más fuertemente sobre la literal.
Start literal, always
- Before reading a phrase figuratively, say what it means literally.
- Many wrong readings come from leaping to symbolism over a sentence that had a plain sense.
- The figurative reading is stronger when it is built on top of the literal one, not instead of it.
Comienza siempre por lo literal
- Antes de leer una frase figurativamente, di qué significa literalmente.
- Muchas lecturas erróneas surgen al saltar al simbolismo sobre una oración que tenía un sentido claro.
- La lectura figurada es más fuerte cuando se construye sobre la literal, en lugar de reemplazarla.

A two-meaning pass
- For each key word: what does it denote, and what does it connote?
- Could it be read literally here? Could it be read figuratively?
- If both, say so — that is the nuance the CED is pointing at.
Un paso de doble significado
- Para cada palabra clave: ¿qué denota y qué connota?
- ¿Podría leerse literalmente aquí? ¿Podría leerse figurativamente?
- Si ambas, dilo; ese es el matiz al que apunta el CED.
"She kept the house." Literally: she did the housework, or she retained ownership after a death. Figuratively: she maintained something the family had. The poem uses all three, and the ambiguity is the point — a reading that picks one has thrown away two-thirds of the evidence.
"Ella mantenía la casa." Literalmente: hacía las tareas del hogar, o conservaba la propiedad tras un fallecimiento. Figuradamente: mantuvo algo que la familia poseía. El poema utiliza las tres acepciones, y la ambigüedad es el punto central —una lectura que elige solo una ha descartado dos tercios de la evidencia.
Distinguish literal from figurative — but in poetry both often apply at once. Words with multiple meanings or connotations add nuance or complexity that contributes to interpretation. Establish the literal sense first; the figurative reading is strongest built on top of it.
