if it were not for要不是yào bú shì (if it weren't for)

A friend gets you to the right place

  • A friend guides you through unfamiliar streets, and you arrive without getting lost. You say if it were not for要不是yào bú shìyou你nǐ,I / me我wǒthen / just就jiùto lose the way迷路mí lù(completed / change)了le。 – If it had not been for you, I would have got lost.
  • Keep two versions apart: the help actually happened; getting lost is the imagined alternative without that help.

Remove the helpful condition in imagination

  • Use if it were not for要不是yào bú shì + person / situation, result. In this example, you你nǐ stands for the friend’s help; then / just就jiù introduces the imagined result.
  • if it were not for要不是yào bú shìyou你nǐto help帮忙bāng mángif (coming after a…的话de huà,I / me我wǒthen / just就jiùto lose the way迷路mí lù(completed / change)了le。 makes the help explicit. if (coming after a…的话de huà is optional here; it is not a separate actual event.

if not for要不是yào bù shìyou你nǐ,I我wǒthen就jiùget lost迷路mí lù了le。

Read the two versions side by side

  • Actual version: a friend guides you and you arrive safely. Imagined version: remove that help and picture getting lost.
  • I / me我wǒto lose the way迷路mí lù(completed / change)了le。 directly reports getting lost. The same words inside the if it were not for要不是yào bú shì…then / just就jiù… alternative do not become an actual report.
Actual help and an imagined alternative

Leave room for uncertainty

  • if it were not for要不是yào bú shìyou你nǐto remind提醒tí xǐng,I / me我wǒmaybe / possible可能kě néngthen / just就jiùto arrive late迟到chí dào(completed / change)了le。 – Without your reminder, I might have been late. maybe / possible可能kě néng makes the imagined result less certain.
  • The speaker credits the reminder. The sentence is not an experiment proving that it was the only possible way to arrive on time.

Compare an alternative with a thank-you

  • thanks to多亏duō kuīyou你nǐto remind提醒tí xǐng,I / me我wǒonly then / not until才cáinot / haven't没méito arrive late迟到chí dào。 credits the reminder for avoiding lateness. if it were not for要不是yào bú shìyou你nǐto remind提醒tí xǐng,I / me我wǒthen / just就jiùto arrive late迟到chí dào(completed / change)了le。 imagines lateness without it.
  • Both can express gratitude in this situation. Their result clauses look in different directions: the actual good result, or an unreal bad alternative.

Change the event before choosing the pattern

  • If you actually got lost and the friend never helped, I / me我wǒto lose the way迷路mí lù(completed / change)了le reports that event. Do not reuse the opening thank-you as its description.
  • For a new situation, identify what happened first, then what is only imagined without the named condition.

Practise this pattern step by step.

thanks to多亏duō kuī (thanks to / luckily)

A deliberate search finds the bag

  • A friend helps search the station, finds your missing bag, and brings it back. thanks to多亏duō kuī(completed / change)了leyou你nǐ,I / me我wǒonly then / not until才cáito find找到zhǎo dào。 – Thanks to you, I found it.
  • The speaker credits useful help. thanks to多亏duō kuī can describe deliberate effort; it does not require a random lucky accident.

Name the contribution and the result

  • Use thanks to多亏duō kuī((completed / change)了le) + helpful person / event, result. (completed / change)了le is optional in this pattern; only then / not until才cái often highlights how the help enabled the result.
  • In thanks to多亏duō kuī(completed / change)了leyou你nǐ,I / me我wǒonly then / not until才cáito find找到zhǎo dào, the understood object of to find找到zhǎo dào is the missing bag from the conversation. Do not invent a different object.

thanks to多亏duō kuī了leyou你nǐ,I我wǒonly then才cáifound找到zhǎo dào。

A negative event can be avoided successfully

  • thanks to多亏duō kuīyou你nǐto remind提醒tí xǐng,I / me我wǒonly then / not until才cáinot / haven't没méito arrive late迟到chí dào。 – Thanks to your reminder, I was not late. not / haven't没méito arrive late迟到chí dào is the beneficial result here.
  • thanks to多亏duō kuīyou你nǐto remind提醒tí xǐng,I / me我wǒband带dài(completed / change)了ledamask silk伞sǎn。 credits a reminder for bringing an umbrella. It works without only then / not until才cái, and does not claim that rain actually fell.
Credit the help and check the outcome

Keep credit separate from ordinary blame

  • In the bag example, thanks to多亏duō kuī(completed / change)了leyou你nǐ credits the friend for finding it. It does not blame them for losing it.
  • An ironic tone could change a speaker’s intention. With ordinary sincere thanks as our stated context, choose the beneficial contribution.

A contribution is not the whole story

  • The friend searched and a station worker returned the bag. You may thank the friend without claiming that nobody else helped.
  • If the bag is still missing, I / me我wǒonly then / not until才cáito find找到zhǎo dào does not describe the stated outcome. The useful effort and a successful search are different claims.

Thank someone for what the evidence supports

  • Name the help and its actual benefit: reminding someone to bring an umbrella, finding a bag, or preventing lateness.
  • Choose thanks to多亏duō kuī for the helpful contribution, then check the result clause. Do not add an outcome or an exclusive cause that the context never supplies.

Practise this pattern step by step.

… that's all而已ér yǐ (that's all / nothing more)

A joke still has a listener

  • After a comment, the speaker says I / me我wǒmerely只是zhǐ shìto play a joke开玩笑kāi wán xiàothat's all而已ér yǐ。 – I was only joking, that’s all. This presents the comment as nothing more than a joke.
  • The listener may still feel hurt. that's all而已ér yǐ gives the speaker’s limited account; it does not prove the effect on someone else.

Close the claim with that's all而已ér yǐ

  • Put that's all而已ér yǐ after the limited statement. merely只是zhǐ shì…that's all而已ér yǐ and but不过bú guò…that's all而已ér yǐ are common ways to stress “only this”.
  • I / me我wǒmerely只是zhǐ shìto play a joke开玩笑kāi wán xiàothat's all而已ér yǐ limits the claimed intention to joking. The sentence does not establish agreement or forgiveness.

I我wǒonly只是zhǐ shìjoke开玩笑kāi wán xiàothat's all而已ér yǐ。

Identify exactly what is limited

  • I / me我wǒonly只zhǐto see看kàn(completed / change)了le两页liǎng yèthat's all而已ér yǐ。 – I read only two pages. The limit concerns how much was read, not whether the reader understood them.
  • I / me我wǒmerely只是zhǐ shìto offer提供tí gōngto propose建议jiàn yìthat's all而已ér yǐ。 – I only offered advice. The speaker limits their role; this does not say who made the final decision.
A limited claim leaves other questions open

Small to the speaker may be large to you

  • 两千元liǎng qiān yuánthat's all而已ér yǐ。 – Only two thousand yuan. The speaker downplays the amount; it may still be expensive for the listener.
  • The amount is not made smaller by the particle. Check a price against your budget instead of treating “only” as evidence of affordability.

Test a changed amount

  • A report says I / me我wǒonly只zhǐto wait for等děng(completed / change)了le四分钟sì fēn zhōngthat's all而已ér yǐ。 – I waited only four minutes. A friend’s deadline was three minutes.
  • Four minutes is longer than that deadline even if the speaker downplays it. The stated number and the speaker’s attitude are different information.

Limit the claim, then check the facts

  • Find the limited action, amount or role before paraphrasing that's all而已ér yǐ. Two pages, four minutes and giving advice limit different things.
  • A speaker can minimise an event. The listener’s feelings, the importance of the event and the accuracy of the account still need their own evidence.

Practise this pattern step by step.

to desire将jiāng (a formal (把: marks the object)把bǎ)

A notice requests a closed door

  • A written notice says to ask请qǐng将门jiàng ménto close (a door)关上guān shàng。 – Please close the door. to desire将jiāng introduces gate门mén, the thing acted on, before to close (a door)关上guān shàng, the action and result.
  • This is a request to change the door’s state. Reading it does not establish that anyone has already closed the door.

Name the object, then what happens to it

  • This pattern is subject + to desire将jiāng + object + verb phrase. In a request beginning to ask请qǐng, the person asked to act may be understood rather than named.
  • to ask请qǐng将门jiàng ménto close (a door)关上guān shàng has the same object-and-action structure as to ask请qǐngto stand as a goalkeeper把门bǎ ménto close (a door)关上guān shàng. to desire将jiāng is common in formal written instructions.

please请qǐng(把)将jiāngdoor门ménclose关上guān shàng。

Read the requested result

  • to ask请qǐngto desire将jiāngdocument文件wén jiàn放在fàng zài桌上zhuō shàng。 – Please put the document on the table. document文件wén jiàn is the object; 放在fàng zài桌上zhuō shàng tells where it should end up.
  • Changing 桌上zhuō shàng to to cover包bāoli, ancient measure of…里lǐ changes the requested destination. Naming the object alone does not give a complete instruction.
Read 将 in its sentence

The same character has another job

  • meeting会议huì yìto desire将jiāngto hold (a meeting…举行jǔ xíng。 – The meeting will be held. Here to desire将jiāng signals a future event, with no introduced object between to desire将jiāng and to hold (a meeting…举行jǔ xíng.
  • gate门mén(passive: by)被bèito close (a door)关上guān shàng(completed / change)了le。 reports that the door was closed. (passive: by)被bèi gives a passive report; it is not the instruction’s to desire将jiāng object marker.

Follow the object in a new instruction

  • to ask请qǐngto desire将jiāngold旧jiùdocument文件wén jiànto delete删除shān chú。 – Please delete the old file. old旧jiùdocument文件wén jiàn is the target; the instruction does not request deleting every file.
  • to ask请qǐngdon't不要bú yàoto desire将jiāngold旧jiùdocument文件wén jiànto delete删除shān chú。 – Please do not delete the old file. don't不要bú yào changes the request while to desire将jiāng still introduces its object.

Read the sentence around to desire将jiāng

  • In to ask请qǐng将门jiàng ménto close (a door)关上guān shàng, locate the object gate门mén and the requested result to close (a door)关上guān shàng. In meeting会议huì yìto desire将jiāngto hold (a meeting…举行jǔ xíng, read to desire将jiāng with the event that follows.
  • Decide the word’s role from its sentence. A future time mentioned elsewhere does not automatically turn every to desire将jiāng into a future marker.

Practise this pattern step by step.

to desire将jiāng (a formal (把: marks the object)把bǎ)

0904.1 Use this lesson’s formal object marker to desire将jiāng: to ask请qǐng ………… gate门ménto close (a door)关上guān shàng。

True or false? Explain or repair the statement.

0904.6 Match each sentence to the role highlighted in this lesson.

    1. to ask请qǐng将门jiàng ménto close (a door)关上guān shàng。
    1. meeting会议huì yìto desire将jiāngto hold (a meeting…举行jǔ xíng。

Write or say your own response before reading the key.

A fresh situation

R1. Interpret and repair. A learner reads if it were not for要不是yào bú shìyou你nǐto remind提醒tí xǐng,I / me我wǒthen / just就jiùto arrive late迟到chí dào(completed / change)了le as a report that the speaker was actually late. Repair it.

R2. Use it yourself. Credit a friend for helping find a bag, then limit your own role to giving a suggestion.

Write your responses before opening the key. Compare meaning as well as form; a different valid answer need not copy the model.

Answers and explanations

Check after your attempt. For open tasks, compare the message and the stated criteria, then revise one detail.

if it were not for要不是yào bú shì (if it weren't for)

0901.1 {'en': 'if it were not for要不是yào bú shì', 'zh': 'if it were not for要不是yào bú shì'}

{'en': 'if it were not for要不是yào bú shì + X,then / just就jiù … = if not for X: if it were not for要不是yào bú shìyou你nǐ,I / me我wǒthen / just就jiùto lose the way迷路mí lù(completed / change)了le.', 'zh': 'if it were not for要不是yào bú shì + X,then / just就jiù…… = if it were not for要不是yào bú shì……:if it were not for要不是yào bú shìyou你nǐ,I / me我wǒthen / just就jiùto lose the way迷路mí lù(completed / change)了le。'}

0901.2 B. No guidance, with getting lost as the imagined result

The guidance actually occurred in this context. The result is imagined without it.

0901.3 True.

{'en': 'Yes – if it were not for要不是yào bú shì…,then / just就jiù…((completed / change)了le).', 'zh': 'to / towards / correct对duì –– if it were not for要不是yào bú shì……,then / just就jiù……((completed / change)了le)。'}

0901.4 A. The speaker imagines getting lost without the friend's help.

The speaker imagines getting lost without the friend's help. The context credits actual help using a counterfactual alternative. It does not report that the speaker actually got lost.

0901.5 False.

The friend helped and the speaker arrived safely. Getting lost belongs to the imagined alternative.

0901.6 1–B: Actual: the friend guided you = You arrived without getting lost; 2–A: Imagined: remove that guidance = You would get lost

Only the first version actually occurred in the opening situation.

0901.7 False.

maybe / possible可能kě néng means might. It weakens the certainty of the imagined result.

0901.8 A. I / me我wǒto lose the way迷路mí lù(completed / change)了le。

I / me我wǒto lose the way迷路mí lù(completed / change)了le directly reports getting lost. The other sentence imagines getting lost without helpful guidance.

0901.9 One possible response: if it were not for要不是yào bú shìyou你nǐ,I / me我wǒthen / just就jiùto lose the way迷路mí lù(completed / change)了le。

Check meaning and form:

  • My response conveys a message that fits the opening situation.
  • I can explain the meaning of the pattern, rather than only naming it.
  • I tried a second response with a name, time, place, or description changed.

This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.

thanks to多亏duō kuī (thanks to / luckily)

0902.1 {'en': 'thanks to多亏duō kuī', 'zh': 'thanks to多亏duō kuī'}

thanks to多亏duō kuī((completed / change)了le) introduces the helpful contribution: the friend’s help. It can be deliberate rather than accidental.

0902.2 B. Useful help leading to a good result

The friend helped find the bag. Deliberate help can be credited with thanks to多亏duō kuī.

0902.3 True.

{'en': 'Yes – thanks to多亏duō kuī(completed / change)了leyou你nǐ,I / me我wǒonly then / not until才cáito find找到zhǎo dào.', 'zh': 'to / towards / correct对duì –– thanks to多亏duō kuī(completed / change)了leyou你nǐ,I / me我wǒonly then / not until才cáito find找到zhǎo dào。'}

0902.4 B. The speaker credits the friend for the successful search.

The speaker credits the friend for the successful search. thanks to多亏duō kuī normally presents a beneficial contribution. only then / not until才cái highlights how the help enabled the result here; it is a common partner rather than compulsory in every sentence.

0902.5 False.

It credits the friend’s help in finding the bag.

0902.6 True.

only then / not until才cái is common, not compulsory. The stated benefit is bringing the umbrella, not proof of rain.

0902.7 C. Not arriving late

not / haven't没méito arrive late迟到chí dào means not being late; avoiding the bad event is the benefit.

0902.8 False.

Crediting the friend does not deny another person’s contribution.

0902.9 One possible response: thanks to多亏duō kuī(completed / change)了leyou你nǐ,I / me我wǒonly then / not until才cáito find找到zhǎo dào。

Check meaning and form:

  • My response conveys a message that fits the opening situation.
  • I can explain the meaning of the pattern, rather than only naming it.
  • I tried a second response with a name, time, place, or description changed.

  • I can explain the meaning of the pattern, rather than only naming it.
